[Q] calendar problem - can see my wifes calendar on desktop gmail but not on phone - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK - first of all, I have multiple calendars and they all work. The problem I have is very specific.
My wife has shared her gmail calendar with me. We both use gmail & share calendars. I can see it great on my desktop - turn on, off, color coded, perfect.
However - I CANNOT see her calendar on my phone. All of my calendars show up, but not hers.
Any ideas welcome.

I am going to ask the obvious ...
Did you click on Menu -> More -> Calendars and select it?
Scott

tried that
Attached are two photos / screenshots:
1. From phone, shows all my calendars. My wifes is not shown.
2. From PC, shows my wifes calendar (in green, circled in red).
??

Just for grins and giggles, click on "settings" under her calendar in your Gmail calendar and make sure the box is checked under "show in list". Seems like I had a very similar issue and that was the resolution.

checked on "settings" in my gmail calendar, and her calendar was/is/continues to be checked as "show in list".

The biggest clue is that her calendar is showing up under "other calendars" on your PC. You need to change the calendar permission in her Gmail account so that you are allowed to both "see events" AND "make changes". At present, I would guess you are only allowed to "see events". Once the permissions are correct, her calendar will show up under "My Calendars" in Gmail, and then should sync to your phone.

Yes - what he said. I have the identical set up on my calendar as well as my wife's. She needs to set you to "Manage changes" at least, maybe "AND Manage Sharing".
If this is a google apps set up, and you aren't on the same domain, there is a setting in the Google Apps Manage this Domain ...
Outside somedomain.com - set user ability
By default, calendars are not shared outside somedomain.com. Select the highest level of sharing that you want to allow for your users.
I have mine set to "Share all information, and outsiders can change calendars".
it was kind of finicky to set up!
Scott

I think that the issue is what Epicardium and spatton point out. I have an apps account, and my wife is outside my domain. Even with a little tweaking her calendar shows up as 'other calendars' right now.
Seems like I need to fiddle with the Google Apps Manage this Domain privileges to get her calendar onto 'My Calendars'. Once this is done, sounds like it might work.
I agree with spatton - managing the privileges for apps is a little unwieldy. I am sure it's great for larger businesses, but for small businesses it can be a little frustrating.
Thanks for the help guys - never would have figured this out myself. Will update when I can fix it

Being bored - stuck on a conference call - having a gmail, and several google apps accounts - I decided to tinker with this.
On *HER* gmail/google apps account, you have to set the sharing of the google calender to *YOUR* google apps account to "Manage events AND manage sharing". As soon as you do that, it will move to the top. You probably then have to do a sync and select that calendar.
Manage events wont do it ... goes to the bottom.

TEAM - WINS!
Thanks everyone. I checked my apps settings, which were correct. She set her calendar to 'Manage events AND manage sharing', and the calendar popped up into 'My calendars'. Then, on my phone, went in to calendar, hit 'Add Calendars', and hers was there.
Yay!! So - how many people does it take to screw in a google calendar?

You should try to get the calendars to sync on an iPad. It makes this seem perfect and simple!
Glad I could be of some assistance.

Google Contacts sync

Hi all,
any of you ever tried to sync only one (or more) specific contacts group?
I remember of such a function in Android 1.6, and it would be great to have it back on 2.1 too (maybe it's there and it's just me who cannot find it).
I don't like to have ALL the Google contacts sync'ed.
Thnx
Can't be done. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=662949
Thanks Cleargrey,
would you tell me if you ever tried to sync Outlook with the phone did you manage to do so? It seems my HTC sync won't sync, telling me no errors but no contacts sync'ed as well
I also tried to sync Outlook with Goole, and found a good prog to do so (Go contacts sync) since I don't want ot go over with CSV import/export, but it states it syncs pictures too, and it doesn't...
Cleargrey, just a little info to better understand the following HTC answer:
A1. It is not possible to sync just 'My Contacts', it would always be 'Google Contacts, or 'All Contacts'.
what do they mean with "Google Contacts or All Contacts"? Is it just basically a different way of referring to the same "All Contacts" group?
I'm asking because I just checked on Google Accounts and I didn't see anything like "Google Contacts"
There does seem to be some confusion over the various contact lists/groups on the phone and on Google Contacts.
BTW, Google Contacts can be accessed through your Gmail account (left side menu -> Contacts) or directly at www.google.com/contacts.
Basically:
All [phone] = My Contacts [Google Contacts]
Favorites [phone] = Starred in Android [Google Contacts]
Co-workers [phone] = Collegues [Google Contacts]
Family, Friends [phone] = Family, Friends [Google Contacts] resp.
user created groups [phone] = user created groups [Google Contacts], and vice versa.
All Contacts [Google Contacts] is never sync'ed on the phone.
All the above get sync'ed together, you can't cherry pick.
Sorry to correct you JT, but if I access Google Contacts on my desktop I find "All Contact" contains 643 contacts.
Now, doing the same on my phone (Contacts -> Menu btn -> view) I see "Google (643)".
Hence my phone sync'ed All Contacts.
It would be great if it would have sync'ed "My contacts" only, cuz even if it's not a subgroup, it only contains contacts I want to carry on the phone
Two very quick questions I'd love some help with.
1. Whats the quickest way to type a new sms message? When I open the messages icon and choose "new message" it lists ALL of my contacts. Anyone I EVER emailed in my life. 1000s. I justwant to see my 100 or so SIM contacts as I want to write an SMS message. any way around this?
2. I clicked on new message (in the messages icon) and typed in an email address. The phone then sent the email as an attached MMS message via my phone service provider? I assumed it would use my gmail details to send it? Am I set up wrong?
Thanks, Got the desire yesterday. First time on android. bit lost really. not as intuitive as expected, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.
fastest way to send sms to a specific contact is to go to "Contacts", look for the person you wantto send the sms to, and then click not on the name but on the picture (or on the pic placeholder): some icons will show up so that you cna choose what you want to do. Click on message and you're good to go.
your problem is the same to me: I DO NOT want all my google contacts on my phone cuz everytime I have to do something with contcts (apart from phone, where I checked "show only contacts with tel number") it will fill my eyes with unwanted persons

Hmm, glad mine doesn't do that! Anyhow, go to your "All" contacts list on your phone, then MENU button -> View, un-check "Show auto Gmail contacts".
Seems I may have been wrong, Google Contacts' All Contacts do indeed seem to get sync'd in their entirety but this check box allows you to mask what you don't want to see.
checked that, and will test functionalities for some days, but going to "search contacts" still shows up all Google contacts.
This is something really pissing me off.
For real: I can't understand why 1.6 had the opportunity to select the groups and 2.1 does not!!!
The Contacts/People feature seems a bit confusing to me.
The best way I've found of managing contacts is to create a group called 'Phonebook' and just use the People widget to display that group on one of my home-screens.
I can then add or remove anyone I like in there and it's easy to pick someone to call/text. The widget looks pretty cool too with everyone's facebook pics.
Seems much easier than viewing all People and scrolling through loads of Facebook contacts I don't need or Google contacts with only an e-mail address.
I can manage it all online under my Google account as well so setting it up only took a couple of minutes.
See here for a workaround for syncing just my contacts:

Additional Google "Other Calendars" will not sync to phone

I'm having problems synching multiple Google calendars to my phone...
Under "My Calendars" in Google calendar (when viewing Calendar Settings via the desktop) I have my own named calendar. Under "Other Calendars" I have my wife's calendar, "Contacts' birthdays and Events", "UK Holidays" and I've just added a Google calendar called "England" which contains the upcomming World Cup Fixtures.
Everything in my original four calendars syncs fine - and if I use the "Create New Calendar" button to add another calendar under "My Calendars" that too appears on the phone, but try as I might I can do nothing to make the "England" calendar appear.
I actually had a similar problem just after getting the phone - but then it was with the "Contacts' birthdays and Events" calendar which I'd just added. It seems to me that whatever calendars are there when the phone first syncs will appear just fine, but if you add any extra "Other Calendars" they never show up.
I fixed the previous issue by doing a full system reset and starting over. That was fine then, because I'd had the phone less than a day, so hadn't set much up, but I don't want to keep doing this every time I want to add another calendar!
I found another discussion on the Google forums with a link to a solution that involved the following...
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
com.android.providers.calendar -> clear data
Forced a Calendar Sync and got all my Calendars
Trouble is, that was for a HTC hero, and there doesn't appear to be a com.android.providers.calendar app on the Desire!
I have tried...
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
Calendar storage -> Clear data
...That did clear everything and force a re-sync, but still the "England" calendar does not appear.
I've also checked it's not listed on the phone's calendar app under Calendars, and I've tried the "Add calendars" option there too, but that does nothing.
Has anyone got any ideas how I can resove this? I realise I could copy all the events from another calendar to my own one, but I'd rather be able to sync things automatically.
Thanks,
Matt
I've seen a few similar issues posted on various boards, without any concrete solutions, so I'm guessing it may well be affecting others too - although admittedly, it's probably not a major issue, as how often do people chop and change their calendars?
Would someone be prepared to try adding another calendar (via their Desktop) and seeing if they can see it on their Desire? (i.e. From Google Calendar, select Other Calendar's, Add, Browse Interesting Calendars, then pick one to try - you can always remove it later.)
I also tried...
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
Calendar -> Clear data
...but this didn't help either.
My only other thought was that perhaps I'd hit a limit on the number of calendars, but I'd be surprised if that was the case already?
If I go into the calendars option on the phone I see...
My Calendar
<My named calendar>
Contact's birthdays and events
UK Holidays
<Wife's calendar>
PC Sync
If this is an issue for other people too, then perhaps it could be added to the "Flaws & annoyances with the HTC Desire..." thread.
Any assistance appreciated.
Instead of clearing the calendars data, look for 'Calendar Storage' and clear the data for that, followed by a reboot.

Also, whats the difference between My Calendar, My Named Calendar and PC Sync?
Thanks Rusty, but I tried that the first time around with no luck.
Just to be sure, I just did so again and then immediately rebooted, but I still only get my original set of calendars back - no sign of the England world cup fixtures.

I think My Calendar is local to the phone (i.e. not synched to a Google account, so you won't see stuff in there if you look online), and <My Named Calendar> is the Google one.
PC Sync is presumably one used if your using HTC Sync or some other program to sync with a calendar stored locally on your own PC. (I don't use HTC Sync though, as I've no need for it.)
I've got 2 calendars showing on the phone, my one and the UK Holidays one I picked out from the interesting list a while ago.
Just tried adding Englands WC fixtures and it's not showing in the list, but working fine on the desktop. Forced it to sync up and it made no difference.
Thanks for trying this Rusty - it seems to confirm that this is an issue, and not just me...
As far as I can tell it seems to be a problem adding ANY additional calendars, as I also tried adding ones that had events today - just in case it was something to do with nothing being in the calendar for a few weeks ahead (as is the case with the World Cup Fixtures).
As mentioned in my original post, it looks like this problem may not be Desire specific, but it looks like we could do with a Desire specific solution/workaround, as the Hero one's not appropriate for us.
I may look into an alternative calendar app.
As far as I can see the built in one doesn't allow adding a new event and having it set to private?
It doesn't sync tasks either
I'm just worrying about having 3 different push connections (google for contacts, k-9 email for email and whatever calendar app for calendar) and its affect on battery life.
Had the same problem,it didnt sync right away, the next day it did though... weird.

I also read of possible delays syncing, and thought that may be the case here. I've had these extra calendar(s) on for several days now and despite reboots, clearing data and re-syncing, still nothing's appeared.
I'll keep an eye on mine for a couple of days and let you know it it appears.

Another issue I noticed was that events added before a certain date would not get synced. Simply opening an event on the pc and editing it, saving, then undoing the changes would get it synced. Luckily I only started using Google Calendar a couple months ago, so I didnt have that many events saved before this certain date and went through each one of them editing, saving then undoing the changes. Afterwards, all events synced ok.

I had a similar issue with some repeating events that began many months/years ago. In that case what I did was stop the repeating event then re-add them as new ones going forward. That wasn't such a pain as I only have about four of these for specific days, but at least there was an easy workaround!
A workaround for adding additional calendars that does not involve completely resetting everything on the phone would be nice.

Google Calendar not syncing entirely with HTC Evo (facebook, subscribed calendars)

Ok, here is my issue.
Both my google and HTC calendar on my Evo show my facebook contacts' birthdays. Wonderful.
However, when I look at google calendar on my laptop, the facebook contacts' birthdays are nowhere in site.
I can add events from my Evo's HTC and google calendar's and have them show up on my laptop's google calendar so it is not a fundamental syncing issue it appears.
Furthermore, when I subscribe to a calendar on my laptop's google calendar (lets say the chicago cubs), the Cubs schedule does not appear on my Evo.
Anyone got any clues to these issues with Google Calendar syncing with the Evo's calendars?
...And yes I have searched and found nothing suitable for my problem.
Thanks so much for reading this.
As far as I know the Facebook calendar should be independent of the Google sync, I think of it as an overlay of such if that makes sense. With the Cubs calendar are you selecting it on your phone? Ie with your calendar open push menu -> more -> calendars and make sure its checked there? I have personally had to remove calendars and go back and re add them to get them to show up when they are new, hope this helps you out.

Ok, that make sense (pun not intended) that the facebook calender + sense is an overlay. Wish there was a way around it. For consistency's sake, I would like my phone's calendar to be the same as google calendar's on my laptop.
With the Cubs Calendar, I was adding their schedule through my laptop's google calendars (do not think there is way to do this via the Evo directly...Google Calendar > settings > calendar settings > calendars > browse interesting calendars > subscribe
Via this method, my Evo's calendar would not update with the google calendar which includes the Cubs schedule.
Okay so I tried exactly what you did and I did not get it to work either
Here is a solution I found from androidforums
Goto MySportsCal.com and download the schedule and import into a new calendar, then sync and voila. Worked flawlessly on my phone using this method!
For the record, not all of the Google calendars you can choose on a PC are able to show on a mobile device. It says it somwhere on google, but it was hard to find when I was looking. (Had the same probelm trying to get the buckeyes' schedule lol)
And yes, Sense is putting facebook in, which is why you cant see it on a PC.
ju5tiiv and Bp3dots,
Thanks guys. I actually found the answer a few minutes after you posted that. funny coincidence....anyway worked for me too.
So I guess have both my questions solved. Good stuff guys, thanks.
You betcha, not a problem at all! oh and I gotta say this in good fun lol Go A's haha jk!

When creating a contact you may have to select it as a Google contact. Try recreating a contact that won't sync, select it as a Google contact, and see what happens.
Make sure that your phone is set to sync contacts in Accounts and Sync too.

Set as a Google contact, and selected the correct email address.
I even tried looking at an alternate email I had, thinking it might have synced to the wrong one - nope...
Just for example, I had created 2 or 3 contacts from my phone, the same way each time, as google contacts. When I synced the phone, only 1 of them synced to gmail...
I though "WTF? maybe I screwed up", so I rebooted the phone, logged out of gmail, deleted the contacts, and tried again.
NOPE !!!
POS "Hem--RRRROOOOIIIIDDDD"........
Anything I create "From" gmail syncs correctly, but only "some" created from the phone synce back to gmail..
And yes also I did double, tripple check that 'background services, auto sync, sync contacts, sync email, default email account, were all correct... I tried repeatedly clicking 'manually sync now' 'sync this' and so on...
NOPE ! Nothing.
"Hem-ROOOOOIIIIIDDDDDD"
Well just chiming in my Gmail contacts won't sync on NY one account but they will on any other maybe try a new account?

"google" contacts will sync
I would follow the patches advice. I found that I was looking at facebook phone numbers but they were not getting uploaded to my gmail account. I dont understand why there is not a "phone to contact" or "contact to phone" option like sooo many phones in the past. It would be GREAT if there was an android app built for that. I dont understand why they do not have a "Sync ALL" option that will allow you to save all information from facebook/gmail/phone/ect to a single location to use.
I also dont like the "gmail" vs "mail". That may have something to do with it too. I set up my initial gmail account but never got to see my mail because it was always in the "gmail" app and not in the mail.
Anyway, I think that is a separate issue all together.
Good luck

ANOTHER PROTIP: every once in awhile go check how many "phone" contacts you have by following the steps in my last post. i also found that i have a bunch of duplicate contacts, you can either link them, but i find it easier to edit via PC from the gmail contacts area. you can select multiple contacts, merge them, etc. when you email people gmail automatically creates a contact, but it's stored under "other contacts". you can move contacts in and out of the different groups, etc. get familiar with that and it's way easier than doing it from your phone.

Good learning, and sound advice for folk.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your input, I had the issue of my gmail contacts wont sync and throws up the error that it cant sync at this time, and it keeps trying and runs your battery dead trying to. this was all after I rooted my dinc s-off, I even deleted all my contacts and it would sync one time successfully then go right back to the same crap.
But I never tried making all my contacts into gmail contacts mainly because I wasnt having an issue until I rooted my device, but here is a bigger mystery, I run Cyanogen7 and dont have any issues syncing anything, only when I run the stock rom.
So I guess I need to be added to the DA list...LMAO
And one last tip if you have a bunch of "Phone" contacts and want to get them all transferred at once: you can export your phone-only contacts then import them all into google.
People > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD Card > Phone
This will export all of your contacts marked as "Phone".
People > Menu > Import/Export > Import from SD Card > Google
This will re-import everything into the gmail account you select.
This is some good information. My wife was asking me about this the other day. XDA FTW.

LG G4- How To Show Birthday Reminders?

Smart Notice
I'm trying to figure out how to get it to show me Birthday reminders (I have a Google calendar dedicated to birthdays, titled "Birthdays" just to make it obvious to the phone.). The option is ticked under settings, but nothing from the phone.
What am I doing wrong?
In Google Calendar, go to Menu>Settings>Birthdays (you will see a tab marked "Birthdays" a couple of lines above settings, but that just toggles birthdays on/off). There you will be able to choose which accounts and behaviors you want to use.
However, that just shows a notification the day of that person's birthday. I have not found a setting to show you a reminder say a week in advance without setting up a specific event.

Right. And my Birthday's calendar is toggled in, and I created the birthdays in 3 formats:
1. My 'default' Gmail calendar - created an event titled "Fake's Birthday"
2. 'Birthdays' calendar - created an event called "Fake"
3. 'Birthdays' calendar - created an event called "Fake's Birthday".
All 3 are all-day events.
All 3 lead to the same result: The phone won't even read the name of the 'person', and just shows that it's a friend's birthday.
(see attachment.)
http://imgur.com/ZtAwFs9
My girlfriend has a G4 as well, and hers will automatically notify her 6 days in advance that it's someone's birthday (with the correct name/ date/ time) and that you set time aside for celebrations. I tried her calendar settings too, and can't seem to figure it out.
We may have been looking at this from the wrong direction. If you go to Google Calendar settings on your computer, instead of your phone, there are more options available. One is to set a notification "X" number of days before an all-day event. I don't know if your girlfriend is doing it that way, but it would be a way to accomplish what you want.

I don't think it's that. I've created multiple events in different formats under different calendars, and the only one that seems to trigger the Smart Notice is if it's under the "xxx's birthday" format. Also, the event must be there 7 days prior (and Google Cal sync that far back) for SN to read it, irrespective of notifications under Google Calendar on the computer.
So anyway, I tried that - and here's what I got today.
Notice how SN reads that it's a birthday from a week before in Calendar, but still doesn't read the name properly again. (slightly different problem!)
http://imgur.com/djyO2UZ
So having a calendar dedicated to Birthdays is useless unless the format of the event is essentially "xxxx's birthday." Wonder if it works for Anniversaries as well.
