[Q] Battery Life Changes? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone help me improve my battery life? I am currently using the MIUI ROM Made by "Ganii" and I want to save a little more battery life. Is there anything I can do to change the battery drainage? I am also using Multitasking Pro and it helps a lot but not enough. Screenshots below of my ROM info please leave comments!

I use set CPU. Some ppl argue it drains battery, but I believe if you have it set at a fast enough speed for your taste and just have a few other profiles it helps. The hugest bettery improvement for me came when I used the battery calibration app. Just drain your battery to 1% and use it. My battery life jumped from 12 hrs to 48 hrs! Also leaving Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, data and auto sync except when you need them helps.

I too have issues with the battery life of my desire z. With everything off and just sms and taking a few calls, battery only lasts up to 12 hours.
Tried several apps which didn't help either.I'm running on stock rom. Would changing roms help?
Will try set cpu and see what happens.

I don't know how to use SetCPU correctly. I always encounter errors. Please help fill out what i need to in the SetCPU.

Different people have different ideas about setcpu. Some believe that you shouldn't have any profiles. Others run many profiles. Personally, I believe that if you have setcpu set for userspace or on demand the phone is then constantly trying to figure out how much performance you need, causing a slight drain. I have mine set to 1113MHz performance. And for screen of the complete minimum. It never really gets to warm and is fast for everything I need. You said you where getting errors? What kind?

Root and flash a rom. I was at 12 hours before. Also get the app 'battery calibrator' after rooting. I can't argue with 48hours... can you?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

48 hours from the miscalibrated battery indicator (which is possible from the 1% trick) or did you actually use the phone for 48 hours?
Unless it's in airplane mode, it won't last 2 days with moderate use. In particular, any usage that includes 3G will drain the battery quick unless you have a strong signal.

flash cyanogenmod nightly, or 7.0 stable...
settings on cyanogenmod w stock battery:
cpu low 245mhz
cpu high 724mhz (or something)
scheduling: powersave
display: automagic or 50%
DO NOT USE APPLICATIONS FOR TASK KILLING, let android do it.
this works for 24 hours of occasional use, phone calls, sms, browsing.
and go order 2 of the red INCREDIBLE 1800mah batteries off ebay like i did (just arrived today) for $10 total, including shipping. i'm draining the batteries in 2 of my g2's right now with wifi, btooth, max settings, and youtube HD playing constantly. after they're drained to auto shutoff, i'll charge over night, then test like i normally use the phone tomorrow.
supposedly this battery is 1.4 x the capacity of the stock g2 battery. we'll see if it really is

Letting a li-ion battery fully drain is really bad. Li-ion batteries don't last forever and after a certain amount of charges it will eventually dither. Its a lot of charges to make that happen but you should never let a li-ion battery fully deplete. Oh and there is no such thing as battery calibration for li-ion batteries.
Also to the OP you shouldn't let the world know your imei number...just a thought
dont send me pm's crying about how i hurt your feelings in a thread

the phone shuts off, before harm is done. that's my understanding. at a grand whopping total of $10 total (shipped, for two ( 2 ) of these 1800mah things) i'm not really worried.
the os is smart enough to not fully deplete the battery, ei shutting itself off. i may toss the old ones in a fire (gasp!) at some point just for fun and to make the greenies cringe.

Getting GREAT battery life with new ROM (Lost just 20% in 16 hours)

See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361108
Lost just 20% in 16 hours. This is of course with JuiceDefender and airplane mode scheduled to run over night. But it's still impressive as we used to get battery drains even at times phone was supopsed to sleep and AirPlane mode on.
My baseband is UGKK7, but that's not what cured it, I had this baseband installed days earlier and battery drain was awful.
In my case it appears all battery problems are cured:

What's your standby current draw? In my HD2 android, I had about 4-9ma. But in Galaxy Nexus it's about 19-40ma which is pretty high. Judging from your screenshot, yours is 16ma in standby?
Possibly, I have no idea. Nexus is known from high default cpu voltage, maybe thats that or maybe it's my apps waking phone every now and then to check things, for example LED light notification app or Juice Defender.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy now, might tweak it some more when I have time, but it's now at the same level as my old SGS2, I'd say a bit better (I think I had 5% night drop on AirPlane mode on SGS2, but again it depends on apps).

That's not it, I know battery will go down when I actively use it. What I noticed is that I get great results when phone is idle. This didn't happen before, you would see battery drain even when idle at night in AirPlane mode. This means light use should also give better battery performance than before, I will be testing that.

I dont know what I did but while IDLe, I get about 1% drain per hour, thats on 3G, sync on (gmail, google+, etc), no juicedefender or airplane mode.
I only tested it overnight, when Im sleeping, notice the ZERO wake locks and crappy signal; unbelievable!
Disclaimer: this was while I was sleeping, NO usage. Battery obviously goes down much quicker once the screen is on, but for idle time, I am content!

It is not useless info. Previously, when putting in AirPlane mode and not using the phone at all we would see big battery drain. Now we don't. This is to proove that now the phone actually goes to sleep whenever I don't use it. This is proper testing before and after applying one change.

I will know next time I go to work. But since I never use it for all these 8-10 hours straight, I should have better battery, because whenever I will put the phone away, even for another 15mins, battery will stop dropping like it used to.
In other words, it will most likely still drop as usual while actively using the phone, but in overall I should get more battery because of much more efficient idle times.

[Q] Insane battery life, is this normal?

Is this normal, an hour of web-browsing with screen on auto-brightness and phone drops from 100% to 71% ? Wifi was off, bluetooth on but not connected to anything. I have Better Battery Stats too, shall I post up? On stock ICS.

He said the wifi was off, please read people.
not sure if "insane" means bad or good. But it looks about average. The average screen on time ranges from 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Mine is dead center of that.
Bluetooth not connecting to anything still drains a lot because it is constantly scanning for other bluetooth devices.
BTW your reception is in the YEllow. that means that also leads to battery drain.
So if you have better reception and your bluetooth is off then your battery would last longer.
Note: I use bluetooth a lot and I find it to be one of the biggest factors for draining. more than GPS and Wifi. Although, using wifi with strong signal actually saves battery.

I really doubt that, because I did the same battery test Techradar* does, which is:
screen on full bright
Wifi on
Gmai, FB, etc all set to update as often as possible
Run a 1.5 hour long HD video full screen
At the end of that test I was at 84%. (the Video was on my SD card, not streaming)
In the video they have a graph of their stats for different phones using this test. GS2 and GS3 are top 2.

You're doubting that our phone doesn't last that... Uhh.. Short? I've had this phone since December and had many discussions with others on here about it and we agree that 4 hrs is about right.
So with that test you're saying that our phone can get over 6 hours throughout the say with normal use? Highly doubt it. You have to realize a couple things.
1. Wifi consumes less battery than 4g
2. You should factor in a normal days use that means including idle time i would say about 2% per hour maybe less.
3. Watching a movie means no "touch" interactions which means it consumes less battery than Web browsing or playing games.
So yes if you just leave the phone on the entire time without touching it. It'll last a long time. But with actually interacting with the phone and using 4g data. Most gets 4hr. Screen time in 17 hours of use ( you guys do get 7 hours of sleep right?)
I don't really believe that test. I know that the 4s battery sucks balls. Our phone lasts longer with our 4g on. It is saying that the one x is shorter?? One x and s lasts longer than our phone. So yeah.

Battery Life Problems

How's everyone's battery life? I get down to about 5% by the end of the night with light to moderate use and standby time seems to be pretty terrible (5% drain an hour or so).
I checked in the battery info and it shows Android OS at the top with 66% use and when I click on that, it shows Keep awake at 3 hours and 49 minutes.
Anyone else having this problem? I did a full wipe and that didn't fix anything. I'm also running the latest update.
I can usually last a day with moderate to heavy use. Haven't found it to be any shorter than that so far. Try turning on the processor eco mode
I wake up at about 7:00a.m. and go to sleep at around 12:00a.m. And I usually go to bed with about 30% and this is with moderate use, with full brightness and eco mode off.
My battery life is pretty atrocious as well compared to my Evo LTE.
I'm at 40% at the moment after 7.5 hours. That's mostly wifi and without 4G. Have tried keeping the screen at 40-50% brightness, eco mode on, quad control, on, etc.
Even tried cycling it a few times by letting it run all the way down and charging until 100% with phone off and it's there's been no improvement.

I have been surprised at the battery life of this phone. I was annoyed after I bought it because I didn't realize it didn't have a removable battery and I typically buy extra batteries. I gave it a try though and yesterday I used it moderately while at work for 12 hours, used it for streaming audio on the way home, and after a total of about 14 hours without charging it was only down to 70%. Eco mode was on, and screen set to 67%. Periods were with 3g, 4g, low signal, and wifi.
Dont know why you would have such bad battery life, i used my phone all day yesterday from 530am til i went to bed last night at 1115pm only 30% discharge at that point , i dl a rom on it for my gs3 when i was going to sleep 789mb and woke up this am to 36% bat left. I am truly pleased with the performance so far.
I am not a light user either and use it to play need for speed , I haven't even put it in eco mode yet.

Honestly no complaints so far. I've been toying with it for fifteen minutes after ten minutes of music play and it only now went from a hundred percent to ninety nine. On my 3d it would be down ten to fifteen percent by now.

I haven't had any issues with the battery either. After a decent amount of web browsing, a few calls and a ton of texts, some angry birds star wars and final fantasy 3, I still have 70% left. Also have wifi, gps on constantly, 68% brightness on display and no eco mode.

What percent of the battery usage is "Android OS" for you?
This morning I pulled her off the charger and browsed reddit for an hour with the screen at 63% and lost more than 20%.
I'm exchanging it and if the new one doesn't work any better I'm probably going to sell it and go back to the Evo.
Hard reset your phone and start over ,there is no reason you should return the device before trouble shooting

Already tried HR, went ahead and did another one and ended up having to reset it two more times when the Play Store stopped working.
Now I'm running with a handful of apps, one email account and I'm not syncing to anything other than Gmail and I'm still down 17% in the last hour and a half, plus I'm getting force close errors just trying to access battery status.
Should i look into getting another Optimus G.?

At the time this was done it was at about 40ish%.
At the moment I am at 25% after using my phone about 16 hours. Android OS is at 51%, screen at 19% with about 3 hours clocked in.
By this point I expect a minimum of twelve hours on the battery with at least two hours of screen on time. Im very happy with that if I use the screen for more than two hours it'll last about eight hours which is still good. This phone idles very well I expect it improve with future updates as well.

My battery is a little bit better. I don't have any screen shots right now, but it's usually around 3 - 3.5 hours on screen. Around 7-8 hours battery usage total.

Try downloading Gsam or watchdog from the playstore. Watchdog will tell you if there's a rogue app draining your battery and Gsam will tell you what's taking up the most power.

With 2 hours screen on time over an 8 hour period and your steady curve on that graph, I would say you have some app, or some service eating CPU cycles constantly (these are called wake locks)...
Do this:
Download an app called CPU spy
Charge your device all the way
Pull it off charger
Open CPU spy
Then just hit the back button to close it.
Let your device sit for about a half hour. Don't touch it as much as possible. Leave the screen off.
Open CPU spy... post a picture of what your CPU stats say according to that app. Majority of your times should be in deep sleep mode.
Also, your battery shouldn't drain anymore than 1 to 1.5% each hour at idle. Unless you live in an area where there is poor reception (scanning for signal chews it up as well).
EDIT** ALSO...is your screen brightness on auto or is it manually adjusted a little brighter? If it on auto, then your battery life according to those graphs is absolutely awful. I have mine set pretty bright and I still see about 3 hours of screen on time

Give it a few hours of "normal" use and then come back here with a Betterbatterystats screen shot with Partial Wakelocks/Since Unplugged and Processes/Since Unplugged. That way we can see what is eating your battery. With only 4% gone, we can't see anything (too small of a window). Make sure you don't plug it in and use normally.
I have seen your other posts and I am wondering what it is that you really want out of your battery. If you think that you can get 3-4 days out of a charge, that is not going to happen. 1.5-2 days is a reasonable expectation and I think that you can get that, but you have to look at your usage habits. No kernel is going to fix that. No ROM is either.
If you are polling notifications (Facebook, G+. Twitter) or Google Locations (Maps, some app that requires location) or believe it or not using the XDA/Tapatalk app a bunch, then those will drain your battery quite fast. I use the Tapatalk app quite a bit and that and Google Now are my #1/2 battery drainers. Could I get rid of Google Now? Sure. It is more of a novelty at this point. I still get 1 -2 days of charge on my phone wihtout worrying about where a plug is.
Like I said, come back at the end of the day or tomorrow morning and post the Partial Wakelocks/Since Unplugged and Processes/Since Unplugged and we'll see what is draining your battery.
Another thing to note is that it seems your mobile network is typically pretty patchy. This can really drain your battery too.
I've been chasing wakelocks since I got my device and think I'm at a pretty good place. I get 2.5-3hrs of screen on time (about 20% screen brightness) across about 25hrs of standby time. Does anyone else get a lot of mmc1_detect and mmc0_detect wakelocks?
thanks woodrube. I will post my stats at the end of the day. I don't have a facebook or google + or any app that have notifications or updates by itself. I have the screen set to 20% brightness

how do I delete that dmux wake lock?

Screen on killing battery - 5% over 10 minutes!

I'm getting such bad battery drain when the screen is on its ridiculous. I've taken some screenshots from Gsam and as you can see at times I'm losing 5% battery over ten minutes of screen on time. I'm not gaming or doing anything cpu intensive and the screen brightness is set to 25%.. What sort of battery drain are others experiencing when the screen is on?

I've come to accept the battery is mediocre to today's flagships

Yeah the battery life isn't the best but it's not unbearable, I'm going to get a mophie case when they finally go on sale.

I am pretty disappointed. I had a Z2 then Z3. IMO you haven't experienced great battery life until you've used one of these phones. It's really unbelievable. I couldn't kill it in a day, period. It's really hard going backwards. I don't care how fast a battery charges or whether it's removable, there is simply no substitute for a phone you take off charge in the morning and run all day with zero thought to the battery until you plug it in at night. For me with the G4 battery is crazy bad with screen on and almost as appalling screen off. With the Z2 and 3 if I didn't use my phone much say during the morning at work it would have 90% left at lunch time. Or even streaming Pandora all day barely touched it. Same for this phone I'm already down to 70% without using it by lunch. In this reply I've lost 6% so far. I think all the comments talking about turning off WiFi, and lower brightness etc are all BS. To me, that's not using the phone. It's not making my day and my business easier if I'm constantly worried about battery life.
I've found that the avg screen time no matter what is 3-4 hours. I get 19hrs on my battery on avg and always get between 3-4 hrs of screen on time. Having that spare battery is a major help.
I miss my turbo for it had minimum 5hrs sot and over. Still getting used to this battery life on my g4
Mine has gotten better after a few cycles. The screen off drain is extremely low, which makes up for screen on drain in my case.
On my Z3v, I was amazed at screen on time - but the battery would just drain at 10%/hour pretty commonly - so even though i could get 5hrs of screen on - it would still only last for a day. With the G4, I use it all day when I need to, and then after two days I need to charge it. Not to mention I got 5hrs SOT yesterday.
I wonder if anyone will develop a 4k Mah battery that fits in roughly the same size back? I've seen 6k already... but I dont need that much. Just a bump more will help.

What do you count as a cycle? Mine is still crap after owning the phone for weeks.

Recharge cycles, letting it get low enough that It needs to shut down and then charging it back up with the stock charger.
Others have reported similar, and others have also mentioned doing a factory reset if you haven't tried that.
Overall I agree with the barely average life. Especially with this phone - I'd rather they make it .5mm thicker and put a bigger batter to allow for real all day phone use of calls, email, etc.
