[GUIDE][09-12-2011] XOOM 3G Euro Root Instructions + Files[3.2-UPDATE] - Xoom Android Development

I have rooted the boot image from my XOOM, this is a UK 3G XOOM, DO NOT USE if you are NOT 3G, or use at your own risk, attached.
Before you proceed you will need to unlock your bootloader, note this will erase all of your data, you have been warned!
UPDATE for 3.2
Use the following to get root on your 3.2 updated euro xoom. Please note, the modules here from the earlier boot image are most probably not functional anymore. I will try get an updated set. For now, here are the instructions, the new boot image is attached to this post.
Get the boot_3.2_insecure.zip from this post which also contains an su binary i just compiled.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
Follow the on screen instructions!
Extract the files into you current directory, then reboot into fastboot mode and do:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
This will get you a rooted bootloader but you still aren't rooted yet, get a prompt or terminal open in the folder where the root_files are from the attached zip you will need the su file.
Make sure you have a computer with adb set up then from the computer perform the following commands with the xoom connected:
Code:
adb remount
adb push su /system/bin/su
adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
adb shell ln -s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
NEXT: Go to the Market and install "Superuser" by ChainsDD and you will probably want to install busybox too.
Congratulations on rooting your euro 3G XOOM all by yourself, and remember "one click" is for noobs who like to brick their devices (like me) don't do it.
OLD Modules(tun/cifs/etc) 3.0.1:
Code:
I have attached an archive containing cifs.ko, tun.ko, nls_utf8.ko, option.ko
and usb_wwan.ko with correct version magic. I did not compile them,
and I can not provide others (unless I can find them).
How to use:
Copy the modules to "/system/lib/modules", reboot.
If you don't know how to do that, you probably shouldn't be using them.
Disclaimer: I take no responsibility if either this boot image, the tutorial, or the files attached murders you violently, in fact, don't even use them.

Guys, I have been through this process, STOP using the US root instructions and images, they don't work on the european 3G XOOMs.
I have boot and recovery images that I need someone with a little experience to contact me about testing before I can release them to anyone else as working.
If a mod could sticky this please to stop people bricking their euro XOOMs until I can get the images tested and get a dump of the recovery partition!

As an aside, it's pretty damn obvious from the Wi-Fi/CDMA malarkey that flashing the wrong boot image for the wrong model is bad, especially without stock images.
Did you actually rip the stock boot image? (How'd you manage it?) Can you just post it somewhere? It should be a simple matter to make a root boot image from it.
If there's been an OTA update for the UMTS Xoom already, and you have a recovery-from-boot.p binary patch and the boot image, you can make the recovery image by using applypatch.
I don't have a device yet, sadly, so I can't test yet.

Well, dumping the stock boot was easy enough once recovery partition was sacrificed, you just boot off of that, as for the boot.img I have a rooted boot image that I created, I'll post it here so hopefully some of you can unbrick (as long as you didn't overwrite system too).
I won't post system until it's been tested because that wasn't a simple flash to restore.

Yeah, but what did you flash to recovery? The kernels from source, last time I looked, seemed like they didn't have mods for the UMTS model yet.

Ah, got you. Thanks for the info.

The attached boot img MIGHT work for root (unpacked, set ro.secure to 0, repacked).
(ed. If this works, then the guinea pig who flashes it can easily rip a stock recovery from this, if it hasn't been clobbered already.)

May can you give me a your framework-res.apk file?
Thanks so much

Well, it seems to work - tried on my UK 3G model. The problem is that my 3G no longer works - I try to activate it and it just sits there on "searching for service" and "activation can take a few minutes" with nothing happening.
Wifi etc. works BTW. I may have accidentally overwritten something as I managed to semi-brick it before realising that the US images wouldn't work.
Anyone have any ideas?

You have done what I did. There is no such thing as activation on a UK xoom 3g. You have overwritten the system partition with the US one and you will need the stock UK System image. I have one but I had trouble getting it to work and I wont be posting it until it has been tested. You are welcome to be the ginea pig, and this is the only way you'll get your xoom back to UK and get 3g wworking again, believe mem iv been there.

Ah - that makes sense. Well the US system image I have works fine except for the 3G access, so if I try and flash this uk system image onto my xoom and it doesn't work can I still flash the old US one back again easily? As it's a new xoom and I haven't installed anything on it I'm fine with being a guinea pig as long as it won't completely brick!

Yep, I was in the same position, the US version works fine but no 3G cause it's built for a CDMA device. The stock system image I flashed would not boot so I had to relock and then unlock again the device to fix the permissions for it to boot again.
If your confident you can relock and unlock again the device after flashing this image PM me and i'll get the system image to you to test, I won't be around to help though if it goes wrong cause I'm at work so make sure you're confident first.

i'm trying to do the opposite, I'm looking for euro gsm images, to flash into my verizon 3g/wifi version. The goal is to verify if, once flashed, the us xoom can work with european 3g networks ( for sure it has a world radio chip, same used in the verizone ip4).
If anyone has got a dump pm please.
Thanks in advance.

I doubt it will work, I tried Verizon on my UK 3G and there was no radio detected. They may have the complete hardware available but the baseband probably takes care of access the correct hardware.

That make sense, but a complete euro 3g system dump could do the job...I'm investigating on harware differencies on the euro/usa versions, if they are the same , ther's no apparent reason that could not allow me to push a euro version rom on the verizon one (with a good dose of luck and tech skills )

I flashed a complete Verizon dump on mine and everything worked except the radio, so I imagine it would be the same the other way around. By all means though give it a go, bear in mind they are different models and so most likely have hardware differences (no LTE upgrade in europe).

Thanks OP worked great!
Why would you upload mirrors when Google themselves are hosting the files? Wouldn't it be more reliable to just download straight from Google?
Also, I'm assuming that they'll be updating the recovery images for each official update as well... Meaning your mirrors would be outdated soon anyway. Just a thought.
Thanks anyway though, these will come in useful!
Google's package is compressed in tgz and comes with sh script, also doesnt include fastboot windows.
I put all necessary utils together with a bat script so user can just double click and restore.

I'd prefer the Google Images untouched to be honest.
Guys, a little OT question, but I don't want to open a new thread just for a noobish question:
How could one actually brick the GNex? Is it possible to brick the GNex so serious that it won't even get recognized by fastboot?
If not, it's literally unbrickable. If yes, what would I need to do to brick my phone like that? Just wann know so I can NOT do it
will OTA updates works if i flash this image (assuming i've also cloclwork mod recovery)?

You could do what my idiot brother did to my Nexus S. Format /boot from Clockwork mod (under the storage options I believe) and then turn the phone off. The only way to unbrick it is to send it to Samsung, or the guy on XDA who runs that company that uses JTAG to fix it (which is what I did)

[Q] If I flashed GT-N7100 ROM, how can I get back?

First, I'm an idiot,,,got new to android,,had no idea about flashing,, so I just randomly picked a Rom, and turned out its a GT-N7100 ROM, now my phone has no signal at all,,, anyone know how to flash back ? or I have to wait a att ROM come out?
BTW, Im with Rogers.
Thanks:laugh:
your gonna have to wait till either someone makes a odin back with a stock rom or makes a stock rom you can flash via recovery.
EDIT: did you make a backup?
this reminds me of the following youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwleOote5M0
Can you give a link to the firmware you flashed? It'd be useful to know if it contained a modem and/or kernel (or not.)
If it contained a modem, you'll need another modem. If it contained a kernel, you'll need another kernel. We have those. Regardless, you'll need to talk someone into getting you a system image (someone that has the same phone as you and has already rooted.)
Also, do you have CWM recovery installed? Is the existing firmware (as trashed as it might be) rooted? Can you use adb?
im an idiot

I just opened the file you linked to.. it includes a modem, kernel, etc.
I know you won't be happy with this, but until an ODIN image shows up, you're kind of out of luck. If someone you know has the same phone, you could ask them to do a backup to an external memory card, and then you restore that backup to your device. Assuming the modem wasn't flashed when you installed, that would get you back into business. If a modem was flashed, you'll need to get someone to extract a modem (and I'm not sure how to go about doing that.)

Please answer ALL of these questions. I can't help you if you don't answer them all...
Does your phone work now, with the exception of connecting to the mobile network?
Are you familiar with adb? If so, are you able to get a shell via adb?
When you plug your phone into your computer, are you able to copy files to/from the phone?
Which custom recovery do you have installed? CWM recovery or TWRP?
Is your phone rooted? (it probably is with a custom firmware - assuming the phone works at all.)

i rooted my phone through this:

donno if i successed,,, but it has a superSU on my screen after I done it,(guess it count as rooted?) and I may used the TWRP

now Im back to my old Iphone 4
I updated that post. Basically, I can't think of anything you can do right now.. until an ODIN dump is available - or if someone gets you a backup you can restore. However, a backup won't flash the proper modem (and it appears you also overwrote the modem.)

Perhaps - perhaps not. Until one actually flashes from the other, we don't know. (Many will tell you that they've done it with a different phone model - my answer to that is simply that it was a different phone model. Until its tried with THIS one, we can only guess.)
I think the biggest stumbling block for you right now is the modem. We have a stock kernel and recovery. A "near" stock system partition image can also be made from another device with a simple command. I have to be honest, though, that I have no clue how to extract the modem from these LTE phones.
A recovery (and kernel) can easily be flashed with ODIN (or with dd from a rooted shell.) Same for the system partition (which is, basically, the OS.) Getting a system image might be annoying, as you'd need to find someone with a roger's phone to make it for you, upload it, etc.
The modem, however... I'm not sure how to go about getting that for you. I've never had to create a modem image...
If/when a ODIN package appears, you can use a program that will, basically, reflash your entire phone to stock. Modem, kernel, recovery, bootloader, etc. Everything. Normally, users wouldn't see those ODIN packages, but there are a couple of websites that have access to some samsung servers where they a put. Once they are put there, we can get it...
Take care

Looking forward to this remedy as this is the reason I am jumping from att Galaxy S 3 to the note2. Want my international dev community back!
Unfortunately so far down here in Southern Florida Miami beach there is no white Note 2 anywhere.
For those that have the ATT version of the Note 2, if you've mistakenly flashed the ROM, I highly suggest visiting your nearest AT&T Device Support Center. Since I've previously worked in those centers, they have a propietary Samsung flashing tool that allows them to flash to the stock ROM, even if it's rooted. Granted they'll be able to tell if you've rooted it or not (which may or may not void the warranty, depending on who you talk to), as long as the phone can turn on and go to firmware recovery mode, the flashing works almost 100% of the time and it's a free service.
However, as I got my Note 2 yesterday, I've contacted my nearest DSC and they said that they don't have the ability to flash the Note 2 yet and they may have that ability to do so in the next few weeks or possibly by the end of the year (if you can wait that long). Being that the associates are just corporate drones, if they can't fix it, they'll more than likely replace your phone under warranty (which I don't suggest since the replacements are refurbished, and besides you should be within the 14 day return period for a new phone).
Sorry if it doesn't help the ones who have the Rogers versions.

Looking to be pointed in the direction of a root for Galaxy Tab A6 sm-t280

Hey guys,
Been searching for a few days now ive tried several root methods
the ones from playstore like
Kingroot
Kingoroot
Kingoroot desktop
Its a galaxy tab a6 running android 5.1.1
Build number LMY47V.T280XXU0APB6
All of the above say they can root it but they all failed
I have seen posts on forums such as this one offering custom roms for the device so I must assume there is a root somewhere and I just cant find it.

I have made some modifications to it and flashed no issues.
This means it can at least be debloated.
How would I do that exactly nothing I have tried has worked

Hello ashyx
I have the sm-T285m. Yes, I could not root it using the usual programs out there. Any way to inject root into the system image and then reflash it through odin? (as you mentioned you have managed to debloat it-maybe a dumb question as am sure you already looked into it) I recall trying to do such a thing on Huawei Mediapad x2 when there was no root but ran into issues after I accidentally overwrote my entire windows o/s and disk with linux and then gave up (had to extract files from image, add the su then recompile something like that?...from memory over a year back and was only my first and only foray into linux) The odin tar files are separate ones for modem, system, bootloader etc.
Thanks

I already tried prerooting the system image.
It wont boot because the boot.img needs to be patched and you can't patch the boot.img on a bootloader locked device.
I even asked Chainfire if there was any other way and he said no.

Thanks Ashyx...you mentioned you managed to debloat it. I tried ext4unpacker (maybe archaic now though recall it worked on 5.0.2) to separate the system.img into components but could not. I am interested in editing system image
(A) change dpi (increase the lcd density to 380 or so to get things bigger),
(B) change system font (put in a preferred ttf font),
(C) remove many unneeded (for me) google apps from the system folder, and
(D) enable mobile data auto on off for mms via the features.xml or others.xml. Do you think these could be done (you already mentioned the debloat).
typically i managed to get all of the above done if rooted.
Any advice appreciated on how to do this unpacking and repacking.
Thanks
does this help? opensouce kernel?
(again maybe preaching to the choir but thought I'd ask-not knowledgeable here but posting if it helps in getting to a semi-rooted type state somehow)
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=sm-t285
btw i 'managed' to get oem unlock to show as checked permanently...does that mean the bootloader is unlocked now? (cross flashed through odin the 285 on my 285m the system CP file...and reverted back to 285m-no difference though in network as modem was still 285m as was partition and BL-reflashed the BL as well separately for 285m-after all this shows oem unlock checked-when i got the device new it was unchecked)
edit...from what it appears, it means it CAN be unlocked, yes? but not actually unlocked?

It wont make any difference. Enabling OEM unlock doesn't unlock the bootloader.
You still wont be able to flash unsigned boot or recovery images.
It will only allow you to flash an unsigned system image.
I use Ubuntu to mount and edit Ext4 images.
You can use the windows or Linux version of simg2img to convert the sparse image to raw then mount in Linux
Tbh Samsung need to provide an unlock for this device like they do for the Chinese devices as there is no reason why this device should have a locked bootloader.

[Request] HTC 10 Japan (HTV32/pmeuhljapan) Backup/RUU/etc

Made a series of mistakes that led me to only have access to fastboot and recovery. It appears I'm capable of flashing things in fastboot. I can't access download mode at all (gives me an error saying it's unable to boot into download mode), which I believe you need in order to flash RUUs in the first place.
If anybody has a TWRP backup of system and boot that'd be awesome, but really need an img of download mode or a RUU or something to help me recover everything to normal. I am S-OFF and bootloader is unlocked.
Checked HTCdev and nothing was there for this device. All help appreciated.
How do you have fastboot when fastboot comands are done from download mode? Dont you have a stock system image that you made?
He means bootloader mode, the white screen. I think OP is SOL. That's why it's important to make backups, especially for exotic devices. I'm not sure if it's possible, but since he's s-off his best bet would be to convert to an unlocked or Verizon device if at all possible just to get the device working again and wait for either an ruu or backup.

How did you go with this, OP? I just got the HTV32 (HTC10) here in Japan, and unlike previous HTC's I have owned here (Desire, M7), there seems to be no RUUs for Japan anywhere (or am I not looking hard enough...). Website HTCsoku seems very short on info on this model, and the former repository for all things HTC in Japan for modders and tinkerers, 'Scottish Vinegar', has disappeared. Will be getting Sunshine then flashing TWRP and SuperSU soon, but I always like to have the option of stock images, etc., handy, just in case things go tits up.
I remembered the case of failure to entering Download Mode in M9 which solution is flashing the hosd image (extract from firmware), you can give it a try

Unfortunately was not able to get a hold of the stock RUU. I took my phone to my carrier and they gave me a new one free of charge despite the unlocked bootloader, S-OFF and TWRP being installed. Was just more careful on the replacement phone.
I actually am still looking for a stock RUU though.
Personally I made a TWRP backup before installing SuperSU. That way I can update with OTAs later on. (once we get an OTA we'll be able to pull the stock recovery img from it and update without issue).
Trying to convert this model to an international model was a terrible mistake. Au KDDI does not play well with these types of things. My Butterfly 3 is permanently SIM locked on AU's network for attempting the same thing (was trying to get Marshmallow at the time, which coincidentally is being released for the device next week).
I have been running Xposed and SuperSU with no issues at all though. If you get any "device encrypted" error after S-OFFing, just factory reset the data in TWRP.
Many domo's, DarkRazorZ!
I read that twrp-3.0.2-6-pme.img is the one to go for - that what you used?
Good you had no grief from HTC Japan. I actually sent back my M7 for the purple camera issue a few years back and did very little to disguise the fact it was unlocked and S-Offed. I think they are all fellow modders there and don't give a damn what we do. One reason why HTC is awesome.
I am now waiting for Nougat on the HTC10 (they (AU) just did a press release that it will be pushed soon), and as soon as that is on my phone, I shall be going the Sunshine route and installing aforementioned TWRP and so on. Getting fidgety, though... Xposed, Amplify, ad blocking... lemme at 'em.

Hello DarkRazorZ.
I'm curious about your attempt to convert HTV32 to international.
It couldn't be done because of hardware compatibility issue among HTV32 and international?
Or because of just your own mistake in the process?
Did you try a method like this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/convert-htc-10-to-unlocked-t3384460
I'm in Japan and considering to buy HTV32, and I want to use it with international firmware.
I know this is your thread, but I can't find any information about this on web.
So could you share me your knowledge. Thanks.
the us unlocked version can be used on KDDI Au but the verizon radio has to be flashed for it to work and even then, you will only get 2g speeds.

Progress: Boost Mobile Moto E4

Hello, I'm new
I'm not sure if this is the right place, I felt a discussion area was an okay place to share and discuss my findings
I'm working with the Boost Mobile Motorola E4, the contents to this thread will relate solely to the Boost E4
Bootloader Unlocking
Unlocking the E4's bootloader was very simple through Motorola's website, it is for certain unlocked
After unlocking the bootloader I got the bad key screen but in my experience that's normal
You can verify that your bootloader is unlocked by using fastboot or checking the Developer Options
Rooting
Other people claim to have success with it, I have not yet had that success Just flash Magisk 13.1 after flashing the verity zip, don't bother with anything else, root will work first try. If you tried another root method, you will have to restore with the method in post #2 before it will work without giving the error.
After flashing the superuser zip and the verity zip, I wasn't led to a successful root I instead downloaded SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822 and flashed that after the verity zip and i was able to reach home menu
I tried flashing Chainfire's SuperSU zip but the device stuck at the boost mobile logo, I will try again after I can get back to stock and do the processes over again and find a way to have 100% success each time Downloaded a new version SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822 as noted above and i was able to fully boot
The issue now is that SuperSU app isnt detecting root but Terminal is gaining root, I'm going to try reinstalling app from the market. I got the SU Binary Occupied error, going to try to downgrade it to 2.79 and see how that goes. It didn't work for me, now it says improperly installed.. Going to try something else. It's 1:55AM August second, taking a small break from the root, at least I got other things figured out for now.

Sprint 7.1.1 stock RSD file: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298975628
-update- I added the stock RSD file to the list, going to be doing some pulls of stock files for us to work with when I can.
I'm going to try to collect as much information as I can about this device and provide as much detail as possible
NOTE: The below IS NOT Boost Mobile stock, it's sprint will update when I figure out Boost Stock
The sprint stock does fully work with the Boost Mobile device, LTE/data services seems to not work until you do a Factory Reset (in settings). ##72786# didn't work. It is now working for me fully after the factory reset from settings. The boost apps automatically install after the factory reset and after the celluar setup on first boot.. My Boost, etc.
After a few times of flashing and re-setup I've ended up with HFA error 701 which asks me to contact service provider to configure the device for service. Fixed by turning phone off for 20 minutes to an hour and the activation processed correctly.
If your experience differs, let us know!
Restoring to Stock
Install Motorola Drivers
Download RSDlite v6.2.4: http://rootjunkysdl.com/files/Android Programs/RSDLite6.2.4.zip
Download the Sprint firmware file: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298975628
Rename the zip to sperry.zip, the reason for this is to avoid the long file name error in RSD in some locations
Let the flashing process complete
Some people reported RSD not working in Windows 10, this is not fully true, install all moto and android drivers and it will show up fine as seen in below image

@amarc78 You should be able to use the Sprint firmware posted by zoofie666 - Boost is Sprint's prepaid brand.
The weirdness with the activation on Sprint/Boost seems to be normal, because I had trouble with two phones recently. The first was a retail unlocked e4 (to be used on Sprint), done before rooting, and activated at a Sprint corporate store last week by a rep who had trouble. The second phone was a retail unlocked Moto g4 Play (also to be used on Sprint), that I rooted first, got the SIM and back-end computer part taken care of by a rep at the same store yesterday, and did the rest myself.

Anyway, I would gladly take what you have rooted or not, and any other imgs you would be so kind to provide me with. I was about to buy another now that they're $20 cheaper than when I got my first. Hey, don't you have a LG volt?
Hello guys, i have two questions:
a) after you unlock bootloader on this device, is it possible to flash the non boost (international e4) rom on it? if so, have you done it?
b) i used to have a moto e2 from boost mobile (xt1526) and did this with the unlocked international e2 rom (xt1527) and i was able to use my gsm networks with it as i dont live in the U.S and CDMA bands dont work in my country, would it be possible with this device too? Because GSM bands are embeded in snapdragon chipsets, so flashing a stock unlocked firmware should make it work, but i want to know if you have tried it
