Looking to be pointed in the direction of a root for Galaxy Tab A6 sm-t280 - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Been searching for a few days now ive tried several root methods
the ones from playstore like
Kingroot
Kingoroot
Kingoroot desktop
Its a galaxy tab a6 running android 5.1.1
Build number LMY47V.T280XXU0APB6
All of the above say they can root it but they all failed
I have seen posts on forums such as this one offering custom roms for the device so I must assume there is a root somewhere and I just cant find it.
Any help would be extremely apreceated

Nope, no root for this device until an exploit is found.
Where is this custom rom you speak of?

I don't remember sorry
Is it likely one will be found a exploit I mean ?

I've tried everything possible so far to obtain root.
Hopefully eventually one of the apps like Kingroot will work.
Why the heck Samsung locked the bootloader on this device I have no bloomin idea!

Me either no contactless pay as no cellular so why ?
I got mine direct from Samsung and the bloat is horrific
8gb model and over half of it is unusable and without a root an sd card isent really much help
In essence I have gta sa installed and can't put anything else on its infuriating!

It's still possible to customize the stock rom.
I have made some modifications to it and flashed no issues.
This means it can at least be debloated.

How would I do that exactly nothing I have tried has worked

Did you try with kingroot desktop?

I've just bought a SN 280 Tab A6 and I've been looking to root it to be able to take off some of the apps I don't use.
Is there any root, twrp or cusmom ROM for this device?
Thanks

Hello ashyx
I have the sm-T285m. Yes, I could not root it using the usual programs out there. Any way to inject root into the system image and then reflash it through odin? (as you mentioned you have managed to debloat it-maybe a dumb question as am sure you already looked into it) I recall trying to do such a thing on Huawei Mediapad x2 when there was no root but ran into issues after I accidentally overwrote my entire windows o/s and disk with linux and then gave up (had to extract files from image, add the su then recompile something like that?...from memory over a year back and was only my first and only foray into linux) The odin tar files are separate ones for modem, system, bootloader etc.
Thanks

I already tried prerooting the system image.
It wont boot because the boot.img needs to be patched and you can't patch the boot.img on a bootloader locked device.
I even asked Chainfire if there was any other way and he said no.

Thanks Ashyx...you mentioned you managed to debloat it. I tried ext4unpacker (maybe archaic now though recall it worked on 5.0.2) to separate the system.img into components but could not. I am interested in editing system image
(A) change dpi (increase the lcd density to 380 or so to get things bigger),
(B) change system font (put in a preferred ttf font),
(C) remove many unneeded (for me) google apps from the system folder, and
(D) enable mobile data auto on off for mms via the features.xml or others.xml. Do you think these could be done (you already mentioned the debloat).
typically i managed to get all of the above done if rooted.
Any advice appreciated on how to do this unpacking and repacking.
Thanks
does this help? opensouce kernel?
(again maybe preaching to the choir but thought I'd ask-not knowledgeable here but posting if it helps in getting to a semi-rooted type state somehow)
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=sm-t285
btw i 'managed' to get oem unlock to show as checked permanently...does that mean the bootloader is unlocked now? (cross flashed through odin the 285 on my 285m the system CP file...and reverted back to 285m-no difference though in network as modem was still 285m as was partition and BL-reflashed the BL as well separately for 285m-after all this shows oem unlock checked-when i got the device new it was unchecked)
edit...from what it appears, it means it CAN be unlocked, yes? but not actually unlocked?

It wont make any difference. Enabling OEM unlock doesn't unlock the bootloader.
You still wont be able to flash unsigned boot or recovery images.
It will only allow you to flash an unsigned system image.
I use Ubuntu to mount and edit Ext4 images.
You can use the windows or Linux version of simg2img to convert the sparse image to raw then mount in Linux
Tbh Samsung need to provide an unlock for this device like they do for the Chinese devices as there is no reason why this device should have a locked bootloader.

ZenFone 2E Root, ROM, the works?

Would it be possible to divert a little more attention to this budget model? It's over all a great device and the only thing lacking is the software side of things.
A little update. Got the device into fastboot mode which lists general info on the phone(model, varient, etc.), but what I found interesting is that secure boot is listed as "?". Does this mean the bootloader comes unlocked from the factory? How hard would it me to port over twrp of cwm? Also, the fastboot/bootloader(?) interface seems to be touch based so that's nice.
EDIT: Added the bit on the touch gui.

Okay, that clears things up a bit. Do you think the zf2 bootloader unlock method would unlock this device or maybe an email to asus support?

No one knows, the unlock method for the ZF2 is unofficial so Asus won't support it anyways.
I need help finding the stock rom for the zenfone 2E. I was messing around with it after I rooted it and I messed something up. I can load recovery so I just thought if I could get the stock rom I might be able to just flash it from the stock recovery. I'm hoping this will fix my phone, but I can't find the stock rom ANYWHERE! Thank you.

Asus usually keeps their stock firmwares here: https://www.asus.com/us/Phones/ZenFone-2E-US-ATT-exclusive/HelpDesk_Download/ so it might show up soon. Can't you reset the device from the recovery?

I looked through the website and I only found the Stock rom for the zenfone 2, but nothing on the zenfone 2E. I hope i'm not just missing it. I've tried a factory reset through the recovery and I also cleared the cache many times, but yet it still doesn't work. Its frustrating because its just one line of code that I added and if i could just go into the files itself and delete it then i would be just fine. btw thanks for the reply. Much Appreciated!

If you can get someone else with a zf2e to run the commands here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62211408&postcount=10 that would give you the file foran OTA update that could reset the file you edited. What did you edit?

I was trying to change a line that's associated with the emulated sd card. I had inserted my micro sd card into the phone so I can see all the pictures I had on it/ listen to all my music, but it wouldn't read any of the files i had on my micro sd card. Like if i went into my music player it would say 0 songs when I know for a fact I have around 600 songs. the thing I thought was weird and annoing was if i go into my file manager i could find all the songs and play them directly. same with my pictures. I found this website that was showing me how to manually force the phone to read the external sd card verses the emulated one. I went into /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml. Inside platform.xml i found the line " name="android.permissions.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" " Then I added <group gid="media_rw"/> right after <group gid=”sdcard_rw”/>. The more I looked at the site made me realize this was meant for kitkat...I have lollipop.

Correction, I do in fact need the root method you used so I can force download the ota for you.
It seems the kernel source is listed openly on the Asus website, could we get an official root method from that? Also this phone seems to be just a ze500cl with half the ram and internal storage so would the root method for that phone work here for now?

I used the Zenfone quick root file for the zf2. You can get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/root-newbie-root-instructions-zenfone-2-t3114063 Its ment for the zf2 but it still worked for the zf2e.
Thank you. I'll root and pull and update for you.

Have you tried the bootloader unlock that the zenfone 2 has?
Nope. $120 is a little steep for my budget to replace if something goes wrong...

Did the tethered cwm / twrp recovery work on this devices I'm looking for the dumps?
yeah I just did the tethered cwm root on my wife's phone and it worked perfectly. any specific partition you need a dump of? I don't really want to upload the whole phone.
does anyone know of a working cwm/twrp recovery replacement for the 2e?

Lets Begin , if You Have This Phone You Had Noticed That After Upgrade To The Last Version The Ability To Add Apn And Modify Them And The Hotspot Wont Work Any More This Is Because The Locked Everything Up For No Reason Well Money Is the Reason , We need to Extract XT1766_SPERRY_SPRINT_7.1.1_NCQ26.69-56_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip in a folder and SPERRY_SPRINT_NCQ26.69-48_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
in other folder , you must know your way to flash servicefile.xml on linux or windows no details here and bootloader unlocked , well that is easy , now we have to put the files : the 2 OEM files , the 4 System Files , boot.img ,
{{{ bootloader "NO NEED" This Work Before Just Because v48 and v56 have the same bootloader version }}} , recovey.img from SPERRY_SPRINT_NCQ26.69-48_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip inside the folder that have the XT1766_SPERRY_SPRINT_7.1.1_NCQ26.69-56_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip firmware and replace those files , optional for rooting you can replace recovery.img with the Squid2 TWRP recovery.img file and The boot.img Patched Fixed F2FS kernel which is based in the stock firmware kernel sources that we are going to flash here and then flash supersu inside twrp , Well Thats It after Flashing This Downgrade Custom stock you will have back the ability to ADD apn's Again And Use The Hotspot included in the Stock Firmware , Cheers , Thanks To All The People Involved in the development for Perry Moto E4 Thanks Everybody i hope this help somebody with the XT1766.
EDIT HELLO
Things Have Changed Dont Try To Downgrade Bootloader or The Phone Will Get Hard Bricked , Why well bootloader versions on new firmwares have been upgraded please check all the information on the Bootloader/Fastboot
MODE Of The Phone Which Version You Have , Now For Example If You Are On Version NCQS26.69-64-5 you will need SPERRY_SPRINT_NCQS26.69-64-5_cid50_XT1766-SS_7.1.1_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml full package then extract and now you will need SPERRY_SPRINT_NCQ26.69-48_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml extract it too , Now Just Move The 2 Oems Images And 4 System Images And Boot Image To SPERRY_SPRINT_NCQS26.69-64-5_cid50_XT1766-SS_7.1.1_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml Folder Next Look for RSD_Lite_Motorola_XML_To_Batch_Script on Google Download it And Watch The Video Of Rootjunky on how to use it. Very Simple Wish All Of You Luck And im Not Responsible Of Any Damage Of Your Phone Use This Guide On Your Own Terms.

I flashed the Sprint firmware and had data working on my XT1766 after it got it's carrier update, the Sprint firmware does not soft brick the phone as I flashed it and can confirm it doesn't soft brick it, so you are incorrect in saying that.
I'm not sure if I did something wrong but after trying this, my phone kept saying, "phone stopped working". I had backed up my phone so I restored it. Any ideas on what might have happened?

The steps are there. Just don't use the root part if you don't want root. Once you switch the files, flash the service file.xml with rsdlite.

I've tested it.. It worked for me but there is an issue
With this method occurred as well..
While Turing on the phone " BAD KEY" msg pops up on
Black display for 4-5 seconds and then mobile shows Motorola logo...
Now what is suppose to be done to get rid off BAD KEY msg.

That's normal if you unlock the bootloader. Flash the no verity opt encrypt, or magisk, and it will change from bad key to n/a. But there will always be a message if you unlock the bootloader.
I know you said you don't need root, so that bad key message is there to stay.

N/A will be there. But you can flash a new boot logo to kinda hide it. Instead of a black screen, any logo you want, maybe with a white strip at the top to hide it. I'll get you a link.

Just don't accept the update. You can root by flashing magisk. You will still receive update notification. You'll need to disable the moto update app. I forget which one exactly. But your phone shouldn't be able to do ota updates once you are rooted with twrp installed. The update will fail.
here is the root thread.

Thank you. I wish I had known this. I had to flash the stock recovery, etc for the updates to work. A little bit of an unnecessary hastle.

Ota updates will likely always fail if you have twrp, or have modified the system in any way. The ota performs many checks (assert props) to see if the system is clean. If any asserts fail, the ota will fail. Even restoring the stock recovery doesn't guarantee the ota will work.

Question I'm very overwhelmed please help

The last time I rooted a phone was 3 years ago, in general whenever I try to root a phone I feel like the entire process has changed and im completely out of the loop.
All i want to do is make it so i can install f.lux and youtube vanced, how do I do this?
I know that I need to install magisk but apparently I also need to enable the bootloader whatever that means?
Sideload, flashing, caprip, boot-image, fastboot, TWRP: these words mean nothing to me, they serve to confuse and demean me.
Is there any resource for figuring out how to go from a new out-of-the-box moto g30 to one which lets me install youtube vanced? Usually I'd look up a tutorial but the only one I found was in spanish and I don't speak spanish.
Thanks for any help you can give.
First things first.
Android has Night Light built in and Youtube Vanced doesn't need root.
But, if you're still serious about rooting and installing magisk to make use of all of the really useful modules, you'll need:
An Unlocked Bootloader: Motorola's Own Guide
Keep in mind that unlocking the bootloader will wipe your phone and void its warranty, so be absolutely sure you want to do it and back up your files.
Then you'll need to manually patch a boot.img from your stock ROM (can be found here.) and flash it using ADB (Android Debug Bridge) using your PC.
I rooted mine within 3 days of owning it and have been enjoying it with no problems whatsoever ever since.
I used this guide as reference. If you have any questions you can always just message me here or on Telegram (@Kuntitled).

Unlocking the bootloader
You can flash a custom system only if the bootloader allows it. Note, though, that the bootloader is locked by default. You can unlock the bootloader, but doing so deletes user data for privacy reasons. After unlocking, all data on the device is erased, that is, both private app data and shared data accessible over USB (including photos and movies). Before attempting to unlock the bootloader, back up any important files on the device. - https://source.android.com/setup/build/running

The boot.img is the fie that creates the boot partition
/bootThis is the boot partition of your Android device, as the name suggests. It includes the android kernel and the ramdisk. The device will not boot without this partition. Wiping this partition from recovery should only be done if absolutely required and once done, the device must NOT be rebooted before installing a new one, which can be done by installing a ROM that includes a /boot partition.

Fastboot refers to several things
Fastboot is the fastboot protocol to communicate with an Android device.
Fastboot.exe is the part of SDK Platform-Tools used to communicate with an Android device when it's in fastboot mode.

Twrp is a Custom recovery,
The stock recovery has very limited functions,
a custom recovery has more options
/recoveryThis is specially designed for backup. The recovery partition can be considered as an alternative boot partition, that lets the device boot into a recovery console for performing advanced recovery and maintenance operations on it. -RootJunky

Hi thanks this really helped me get the grip of things haha.
I managed to unlock the bootloader but I'm a bit confused on what stock ROM you were referring to, the link you sent had a bunch of possibilities, I assume I need a reteu one since that's the name of my phone's software channel but there's a wide variety of them and the guide you sent seems to have their own ROM as well.
Either way thanks for all the help!

You should check the Build Number under "About Phone" in settings, and match it what you find on that link i sent.

Root Issue -- won't reboot into recovery mode

Hi --
Old Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 running kitkat. I am using CF Auto Root to root it via Odin and I get the "pass" in Odin but then it just reboots into the existing OS and Supersu is not on the device. The instructions I have been following say that you should try again but switching off the "auto reboot" in odin. I did that, but it just remains in download mode. The instructions said to take out the battery...which, not really an option for the tablet.
I believe I followed all other instructions: I have the correct CF Auto Root file for my build; I have the drivers from Samsung ...
Any advice is appreciated.

Hi, and thanks for the reply. Big picture is that I'd like to use the tablet but kitkat obviously is now not compatible with most apps. So really just any reliable way to root so that I can make use of up-to-date/current apps. I can research TWRP and Lineage -- I'm guessing there's a how-to on here somewhere.
Tablet version: SM-t520.

And , obviously, terminology may be/probably is "off" here (newbie and all) ... but I believe there's a step before being able to flash TWRP and Lineage - whether that's "rooting" or "unlocking" or whatever. I'm basically still "stock" at this point.

I see.
Imo it's necessary 1st of all to make sure it's on latest stock to have latest bootloader.
Flashing TWRP with Odin is extremly easy.
Here is a post/thread although written for S4 valid for most others as well.
Written a how-to myself as well but the english part is not as up-to-date as the german is.

No unlocking necessary with that old device.
Rooting means having SU or Magisk but flashing works without as well.

Great, will give this a shot later today. Appreciate the help!
Well, didn't get very far. My understanding is that you have to unlock the OEM bootloader under developer options...which, ... well, I don't have that option listed once I've accessed the developer options. Tried a bunch of options -- factory reset, changed date/time to long ago .... used Smart Switch to check for updates (which one post said would prompt it to appear. Any options for getting this modded without the OEM bootloader unlock option? One post somewhere said that having the USB debugging option checked would work, but .... questionable.

Just use Odin to flash latest TWRP,
Reboot to that TWRP,
Wipe everything plus "Format Data"
Flash suiting ROM and test if it works
reboot to TWRP and flash Gapps fitting this ROM version (I prefer Bitgapps ARM)
Be happy
@tojotojo remember that Odin can only flash .tar and .tar.md5 files
TWRP.....img are to flash later in an old TWRP to get a newer one.
you need check off auto-reboot. it still in dload-mode, then press power to reboot and just as you see it starts boot press recovery-mode key combination to enter recovery. if you are slow, tab will load default system without ur root and recovery. i hope this help you.

I've heard rumors it's located in the actual bootloader, so messing something up there could result in a dead device

Try searching in the BL_ file and decompiling everything there idk
Used to be located it up_param.bin or param.bin (idk anymore if it was in AP or CP) but those files don't exist anymore for some reason. Also wanted to remove it like i used to do on my A50

up_param.bin don't exsist in snapdragon chipsets. That's what makes finding the warning images so difficult...
I'm genuinely asking, why do you root your A52s? I rooted all my phones in the past but with this one I haven't felt the necessity.

I can install apps that let me modify things on my phone. Give easy access to root partion to be able to push files to. Also getting ad blocking with AdAway with root instead of vpn which is slow.

There's some features that Samsung disables on A-series phones. You can activate most with a rooted phone.

There was a discussion going on here: discussion on SD devices
After going through it, everyone reached a dead end
According to this post, even if you're able to unpack, replace and repack the abl file you won't be able to flash it back to the phone. It looks like Odin and the phone still check for valid Samsung signatures on the bootloader files (like abl) even if you have an actual unlocked bootloader to accept custom files. You break Samsung's signature of abl with any edit to it, so you won't be able to flash with Odin. And no type of current root method (be it TWRP or Magisk) have access to replace this afaik. So yeah, it's a dead end.

There was some release post on XDA thought of a "modded/patched Odin" which apparently "bypasses all signature checks" or something like that. I wonder if it applies to the bootloader.

The phone also checks for stuff, so even if you can bypass Odin's checks, you can't bypass the phone's checks
