[Q] New Forum Requests? - About xda-developers.com

Just ordered a new Casio Gz'One Commando which came out a little over a month back. From what I can gather, there doesn't seem to be any good, centralized places discussing much about the phone.
This led me to these questions...
How does one go about requesting a new forum section for a new phone?
What are the requirements to get a new phone added to the forum?
It seems this phone can be rooted; however, with only bits and pieces of information scattered throughout several forums, it makes it difficult to harden the process and help those with issues getting it to work. Not to mention, it's been a pain finding helpful do's/don'ts with things like de-bloating and (perhaps the most important mod I'll ever make to this phone) de-Binging it. Considering the issues people have had with removing Bing from Samsung, it would be nice to get a group of people together to work on the issues and get a good process.
Appreciate any info. Thx.

FAQs or Guide

I have been running around on these forums for at least 5 hours before registering and I have to say these forums are a great source for these intresting and fun devices. I currently don't have one but will in about a week from this post and wanted to learn as much as possible before having it in my hands. There is a lot of great info here but finding it isn't the easiest of things to do.
A FAQs section or Guide section would help newbies like myself.
I say this because finding out things like is the T-mobile pocket pc phone edition the same as a XDA took me about an hour. Finding the software talked about in posts is very hard and good clear discriptions is even harder. I read about all these different ROMs and cookin em etc ( I downloaded the xda SE 1.2 cause it has most of the stuff I want) and find em or clearly understanding what programs will install em under windows I just can't figure out yet. Making Custom ROMs or adding or removing stuff from ROMs people made avail is something I want to learn about but finding the info all in one place doesn't seem like its going to happen.
I run a small web site and will be creating pages with some FAQs and Guides and maybe even hosting some files (of the free kind) this will take some time as right now I am using my cell phone as my computer modem, with a 115kbps connection it will be a slow process and I will post some place when its avail. Granted this guide will be geared towards the tmo PPCPE that I will be getting at the end of Jan.
We've always realised the lack of structured information is a problem here. The main reason is that we're mostly into discovering and developing new things, and that we'd rather spend time figuring out stuff (remove SIMlock, make internal chipdisk writable, understand the GSM part better, etc.) than writing FAQs and HOWTOs. We will, however get to some of this in the not so distant future.
Have you seen the encyclopedia ?
I have seen how the little popups things but have not spent the time in that section yet. If you need any help with the forums I will donate my time to help out.

[Idea] Combing Posts

Please hear me out, Ill try to be as short as I can. Im just detailed, sorry .
We have people from all over posting on here, from every dialect. Some have trouble finding what they should have found in the thread, but almost 75% of the time they 'miss' it. Everyone barks -> READ!. Ok obviously I understand, if they cannot READ, then what are they doing here? First, does this site have translations? On a quick note, I cant seem to see it maybe under user cp? Anyway, if not [hypothetically] thats much harder for them as well [visitors]. If there is, okay that definitely helps.
The awesome devs are posting ridiculous sensitive builds out there and require EXACT specifications, require exact rules to follow. You have the following problems:
1. 'Visitor' cannot read so well so they miss the bugs people are posting in the threads (after lots of pages even me speaking english all the time gets a bit tired after 3 or 4 pages, for them its got to be worse).
2. So now they just POST, now we get another random question/bug that has been posted 30xs before (some related to not reading first post either-somehow).
3. Now the threads 5xs larger than it should be, because of all these dups.
4. Hard to weed out the 'real' bugs.
This is not so much a laid back "hey I did this cool stuff today" forum anymore (or maybe never really was ) its a central ROM submitting place with bug reports, disastrous ones. Its working but not anywhere near as efficient as it could.
IDEA
Find a MOD for vB, im sure there has to be one. If not, get one made it cant cost much, it will be awesome. Hire a team of 'post mods', people that say they browse the forums/topics every minute, and read everything. I think you will find them, its what we all real testers do, we read those pages . Then allow them to 'combine' the common topics, into say various categories, or somehow just fit a real list of common real bug problems on the first page, that everyones posted about. That way, we solve all 4 of those last problems . Then, maybe devs will be able to sort the 'real' problems?
Also this should be possible with vb, you should make a posting template, where everyone is required to post their phone info, and/or like what variation of phone they have (ie. my HD2 has t-mobile version AND a euro version that is quite different and required a different ROM version too-sure we arent the only ones), or like the rom version their talking about, maybe a step by step of what they did. Because some people will say only a few words, someone else will say what did you do exactly then they say. Could have saved two posts, 1 for the answer to his problem. I dont know, just an idea.
I am not going to say more, just see what you think. Its just an idea, I just think this forum is growing immensely every minute, and its a REALLY great place, but lots of bug squashing goes on here and I think this could help . (PS. Its also not 'deleting' threads so please dont say that, its simply moving them and combine like you can a whole topic, just posts instead [like a real bug tracker?])
Sorry if I wasted your time, I never intended too.
Bad idea I guess? Or there is 0 ambition
We can combine posts, but with 10k members active at any moment, it's just too much work.
There are people in each forum that are constantly watching every topic. I agree, too much for mods alone, so see if you can hire up some post combiners or something, where thats all they can do.
Its a snow ball effect only going to get worse, but I understand its no small feat. just something that needs to be broken down into smaller coordination (not simply 2 mods each forum and leave it at that).
With 10k members always active, you would think your staff would be pretty large, its a bad idea to leave it to only a few, its too much work for one person, for it to be efficient. As I said, its growing, and growing very quickly.

what happened to the old XDA

the one where it wasn't overly moderated and had fast loading pages without so many ads?
did someone new take over this site? because the old one was much better,. seems now every thread has assigned moderator or something. the old site was just fine without all the moderators and the community seems to manage just fine and there was a lot less drama.
i don't know what happened, and even though the opinion from one user might not matter, it would be nice if some nostalgia was brought back to this site, because again, it was much better before and i'm sure i'm not the only one that feels this way.
Someone typed up something similar before except it said XDA doesn't have enough moderation. Hmm...
Well, we can't please everyone.

We get a lot of people talking about "the good old days", and I do know where you're coming from. We've now got nearly 6,000,000 members though, and hundreds of different device forums. Also, the devices that we used to cater for were more likely to be owned by people that were already technically minded before coming here, whereas now we get a LOT of people coming here to learn. It's great that we have so many eager people joining who want to gain knowledge from the site and then hopefully start to put some back in, but we also get the moronic spoon feeding requests a lot more. Basically, more people brings more of all these things.
Things have just changed and we've all rolled along together and we are where we are. If you have any specific issues or suggestions then we're always ready to listen and discuss things.
Just try and see it as different to how it was, and hopefully you'll find the right place for you to fit into it now

[Q] Anyone Else Still Hanging Onto Their Vision?

I absolutely love it and refuse to let go of this thing until I find a newer Android with a REAL keyboard, especially if it's another Canadian phone that my carrier has never had before.
Unfortunately, my manager wants me to have access to my emails from my personal phone (doesn't want to pay for a corporate iPhone for me -- not like I even want one anyway) and I can't get my corporate email on my DZ because it's only running Android 4.0 right now and I'd need at least 4.3 for it to run Good for Enterprise, so that I can get corporate email. I've done searches here and on the internet for a custom ROM with that version, but I can't seem to find one (it's driving me mad and I'm spending WAY too much time on this).
Anyone know where they can point me to one? I don't need a whole bunch of bells & whistles.
Many thanks!
Debbie
You'll find just about every ROM for this device in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348266
Best of luck!
demkantor, that thread is absolutely fantastic. Many thanks for that! I'm sure that I'll be going back to that for as long as I can hold onto my Vision.
I've known this forum to be indispensable for many, many years now (since my Kaiser), but it can be quite difficult to find what you're looking for due to the wealth of information, most of which you didn't even know that you needed until you happen to stumble upon it. Searching for topics can be a daunting task as well due to the many acronyms & abbreviations that people tend to use and that thread looks like most of what I need, all wrapped up in a pretty package with a big bow.... THANK YOU AGAIN!
EDIT: It seems that there aren't any Sense Roms with Jelly Bean & Kit Kat. Is that true? I've really liked Sense and the simplicity of syncing my data with my computer using HTC Sync. Is there another brand of software that will sync as easily & completely?
Thanks,
Debbie

What a waste these forums have become

It seems nowadays that these forums have become a total waste to anyone if you dont have the latest devices or what help with rooting them. Other than that there is no interest in sharing or helpinp others anymore. I have posts that were posted in various forums, some months ago already and have had absolutely no feedback on them.
What is the point of even posting anything anymore,if nobody out there is bothered to help with advice, sharing files, apk's,mods etc anymore. I am really disappointed that the community in general seems to have just given up on anything other than the latest and greatest.

The android phone market is a trap that many people fall into. Yesterday, we were buying smarthphones to make them last, and Xda was there to give these phones a second life. But today, people are buying phones because they MUST buy. It's become a fashion accessory, and this consumption pattern has affected the look of the forum. The world of new technologies no longer takes the time to live, unfortunately ...

I would like to point out something you may have missed, i could be mistaken. However, this is (my reply) is truly valid.
I have modded smart phones and devices, i usually follow tutorials, Even if i may seem invisible. With that said, yes the infrastructure of technology is to move forward and "keep up'. I believe you missed what xda-developers means.
You don't need to keep up with the trends, afterall it's a decision only you can make.
Maybe you would benefit from buying old devices, and creating your own design. Customised. Just like an artist paints a pucture, inspired by the souroudning.
Please understand that I'm just a menber as you, but using an alternative thought process of what's going on here. I am unbiased, so i basically sit on the fence with everything. But c'mon. I ported andoid 11 on an S2. Unstable, but thats why this place exists. You have provided valuable feedback. I agree on one side, but would never bite the hanf that feeds me. so to speak..
I believe in development and not destruction.
In your case, honestly. if you're happy with it, stick with it.

Thank you for your feedback. We are actively working on ways to promote more helping and sharing of content on XDA. If you have any ideas, would love to hear about them!
The issue I have seen over the years is that many people come on XDA looking for it to be a "help site". Many want something for free. But, in order to get, you should give. XDA is about sharing of mobile device knowledge.

Help whores... some too lazy or inept to do Google searches and take the time to sort it out.
After which they vanish*.
Problem with that is to use these devices effectively you must immerse yourself in them to some degree.
This site provides an effective platform to aid that learning curve whatever your end goal is.
Learning from others mistakes is always better than making them yourself...
Both Google and the manufacturers push OS's and hardware platforms in a self serving way which is many times in direct conflict with the end user's best interests. This site helps to provide workarounds for the many issues this creates.
Something for everyone is not a bad thing...
*That's better than the spammers hawking the voodoo wuv
Yes,i agree with your statement. But of late, the help you speak of or learninm from others does not happen anymore. In my specific caseg have posted to various manufacturer forums asking for said help and advice and have got not one reply on any of those forums and topics in question.
Hence my saying that it seems to have become a place where if you dont have the newest available handsets etc,you wont get answers to your questions etc anymore because all the top developers are trying to keep up with the latest Android software releases and the latest camera etc technologies to take the collective community forward, but sadly it is to the detriment of the majority who cannot for whatever reason move forward with them and are stuck using older devices and then as a result dont get any feedback anymore on their questions etc.

Part the problem is the thread shows up once in the sea of other threads and quickly gets sunk to the bottom.
It's a busy site. Not sure what can be done expect bumping the thread every few days or whatever.
Separating the rooting, moding, new app threads from general questions might help... or just create more confusion. Probably do more harm than good.
(Edit) Personally I enjoy the cross exposure to other devices and platforms as it increases my knowledge/awareness base.
It's fascinating even if I don't always understand all of it.

Lot's of stuff for older devices has been covered. i.e. developers move on to latest devices, they develop, research, post etc. before moving on and at some point that device becomes an "older" device of which info/data already exists..
either way, cant expect everything to be covered as it's impossible. I was at that point once upon a time.. once i realized cant always rely on an experienced dev to be there to answer all my questions is when its great to research and learn on your own.. eventually stuff will become easy and you might have ppl asking u for help.. thats a positive thing about xda and the internet, theres endless knowledge out there if you are patient and willing to learn.

That, but also the fact that the technology has slowed down quite a bit. It was only a few years ago where most phones would begin to feel slightly sluggish on stock OS after a year of updates...Now? A relative of mine bought a mid range Motorola phone from 2019 and it's fast as can be, game wise it's decent too. The incentive to eek out more "oomph" isn't as high as it used to be - imo.
