Thoughts on support for the iCade on Tab 10.1 (others) - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories

Just curious if you guys/gals think there will be support for the iCade on the Android platform. This would be great if so. I got it for an early Father's day present and think it's a GREAT little accessory for the iPad1/2. Works well with the one Atari app, I just wish there was support for other games / platforms.
I have no background in programming or anything so not sure how difficult this would be and/or if you seeing this being supported by Android in the future.

A Fundamental Reason to choose Android 3.0 over WP7

I actually kind of agree with the two posters, it really is an unrealistic idea, but it will eventually come true... I guess it's a bit early to speculate with only one vague article but a whole army of critics
XNA is good for MUCH more than "crappy Xbox live demos". XNA is used for lots of games on the XBL Arcade already. What makes you think that Sony is going to be able to do better on Android than Microsoft is on WP7? Xbox has easily the best dev tools around and that is brought over onto WP7. The only chance that Android's game dev capabilities could even come close to WP7 is if Sony creates a set of libraries, standards, and dev tools specifically for games. I highly doubt that will happen. Also, will Google even let them? It's been said that Google will be tightening the specs for Android 3 so it remains to be seen just how much. Every game will work on every WP7 phone. That will be a large base of potential customers. Any PSP-phone game would only work with that single device. Why would developers spend time and money targeting such a limited install base? Sony would be just another OEM for Android whereas Microsoft runs the show with WP7. And finally, there's been no announcements or even real leaks about a PSP phone. Who knows if it will ever happen? Also, this would be a reason to choose a PSP phone over WP7 phone but wouldn't apply to the rest of Android.

Its very sad if you think that will happen, a phone cant handle that most ps3 & 360 games dont even run in 1080p natively & if a phone could the batter would last like 45 min & your phone would be very very hot not to mention the phone would need a super chip to be able to do that & that would raise the cost of the phone up greatly...anyway dont know why you bring up silverlight, all the major 3D & graphically intense games will be written in xna

Psp is a playstation portable, exactly. There is a playstation emulator for Android already out. So they will have the exact same games.

Emulation is generally more buggy than games coded for that platform.
Sony is going to make the same mistake here that they did on the console market. A big factor of why 360 pulled ahead of PS3 was that it was easier for developers to code for the xbox360 than it was to code for the PS3. Also developers could make a game in XNA and quickly port it to windows.
Making a game for wp7 now allows you to port that to 360 and PC quite easily. What does making a game for Android & iphone get you? It just gets you on one platform really. This is something Sony can't do and why wp7 really is a true gaming platform. While android and the iphone are very capable of running games they just don't have the tools that MS does.
As long as wp7 sells decently, I can't see bigger studios not getting behind wp7 in a big way. They should be able to crank out quality games wayyyy faster than the competition, since there are tons of professional game developers very accustomed to XNA.

Second, who on earth wants to play the same game on three different platforms? There is no market for this. Fun and exciting on a phone won't yield the same results on a PC or gaming system.

No Biggie....there are plenty of reasons to pick android over wp7, but i dont think gaming will ever be 1 of those reasons

Xbox live and Halo 1&2 were both on the regular xbox. However, it didn't really phase ps2 though, not to mention that PS had many exclusive titles as well. So what changed that the ps3, the industry leader, faulted to the upstart? The ease of development was in MS's corner. Cell architecture took a bigger learning curve. XNA was easy, and allowed for quick cross platform implementation.

Plants vs. Zombies (Casual Gaming in General), Adventure games like Monkey Island, Lots of current games on Xbox live arcade would suit touch experiences just fine. RPGs like Harvest, Carmack is porting a touch version of Rage to the iPhone, that's a multiplatform game. I could go on, but I think you get the point.
Live sucked on the first xbox. Games did too. Although Halo did do well. PS2 dominated.
PS3 hurt itself price wise, it was just too expensive, but it stayed sold out. Sony couldn't keep up with the demand.
360 had a better price. Although MS lost money with each system sold.
Wii kicked both of their asses though!
Also I have never heard of any of those games, none.

Because it's a more casual thing than PS3 and XBox. It also is a fine second console. Few people would have both PS3 and XBox (some do), but Wii as a complement to a hardcore console is just fine.
Back to the PSP phone, I am skeptical about its future. It's done by Sony Ericsson who will want to have it as a differentiator against other Android phones just as against other OSes. They want to build it with specific hardware buttons, and the games developed for it will most probably not be as much fun or won't work at all on other phones. Even if they are developed with other phones in mind, it's not at all necessary that other phones will have similar quality hardware/high performance drivers to benefit from these games. And finally, Sony will most probably want to set a high price point for these games as they won't want to cannibalize their own product (even if such a decision would benefit them overall).

I think there's a huge misinterpretation when talking about Android and Playstation. Android (for the most part) will not be getting legitimate PlayStation games, it's the other way around. Android is coming to the PSP.

That's what I'm hoping. The idea of an Android handset that runs "PSP" games really doesn't appeal to me. On the other hand, when the PSP Go came out I thought to myself "this would be a great device if it had a touch screen, a decent browser and maybe some apps". If Sony release a new PSP that runs Android with an XMB skin it'd be pretty awesome!

You sir must have been living under a rock in the gaming world right now. At least on the PC side of things.
I do agree with him that their are many games that would be awesome to have multi platform capabilities. Plants Vs Zombies is my current crack and love playing it on my PC and Netbook as well as a 2G iPhone my buddy let me have since he got a 4. (no I do not use the iPhone for anything asside from PvZ actually lol). Monkey Island was a classic adventure game that is actually really good on WM6.5 with Scum emulator, and other Xbox Arcade titles like the little known "Greed Corp" would be epic on the phone since it is 3d, simple, quick (games last 15minutes MAX) and turn based so multiplayer would work.

Who is planning to stick with WinMo7?

I made this poll last time, but this was around when the news of WP7 was just getting out. I'm sure that from then and now, we've learned a lot more about the OS and MS has released a lot more info regarding the OS. So with that being said, I was just curious to see if there were any change of hearts.

I plan on buying a windows phone whenever some nice looking hardware comes to Verizon. I might have to wait a while since ill have to buy one at full price because my upgrade isn't until 2012.

Fun phones are the iPhone and Android systems. They're also very good for work as well.
Blackberry handles business as usual.
And Microsoft, your best move was investing in Apple.

Sounds like a guy who is been around for a long time !!?. I respect your opinion but it is windows mobile what made this forum what it is today. So let it die?
It depends what kind of user you are, I have always been a fan of windows because its customizable, what is for me an added value. Now with the coming of mobile7, I dont know, but I´m sure we can support and make the OS better around here.
Iphone is in my opinion a hyped phone (especially the iphone4) and clearly is not as good as the previous versions because of its hardware malfunction.
Respecting Andriod, I like the phones and they are great but still I´m staying old fashioned and try and stick to WinMo.
As you can notice I will buy a phone with the new OS because I´m just curious and its flawless integrated with windows platforms in private and corporate perspective. What i believe is the advantage of Microsoft software.
I will buy a WP7 device in Germany as soon a device similar to the HD2 is released. For me are a display around 4 inch, arround 448 MB RAM, at least 16GB flash memory important. An amoled display is prefered.
Why WP7? As a developer I have with Silverlight much more fun and I have no fun to flash my device regularry to get the rom to a quality level that should be out of box. Is's a shame but big thanks to this board for making the good HD2 roms

Sure it did.
Main difference between WP7 and other mobile OSes, that it is being complex. iOS has just core stuff - kernel, some core APIs and few built-in apps like mail or safari. Android adds some wannabe support for integrating facebook, today widgets. WP7 comes as latest one with around 2 year development as of now, including full facebook integration at launch, combining and integrating your contacts into facebook. This was just an example, that WP7 is way more complex system, than any other mobile OS we have now. It allows integration into hubs, ... while all you can do on iOS is just add your icon on app launcher. No integration into core apps.
Also the biggest fun will begin shortly. Possibility to develop for PC-Xbox360-WP7 with one source code (and just optimizing user input for mouse, joystick or touchscreen) is f...in promising. And Silverlight, C# and XNA are awesome to play and create with, compared to native coding.
I will be getting WP7 as soon as I get the opportunity. Love the UI (I'd just say more colors into icons in the applist). Love the possibilities. Love MS!

First of all, WP7 has a lower target resolution than XBox and PCs. You also can use a lower resolution than the native resolution of WP7 and the phone will resize the image "for free" using a dedicated chip. To target the different input formats, you have to tweak the code and use conditional compilation (like #If Xbox; #If WP7; #If Windows). If you want to utilize the full potential of each platform, there may be many conditional compilation instructions, but it is possible. Depending on the architecture, the main game logic can remain the same and does not need (many) changes.
Ima stick with it. WP7 is nice.
Yep, just as Reihnold described it.
The main logic and core is the same, you just optimalize it for different input and ofc slower HW (but with coming Hummingbird etc we will see reaching Xbox on WVGA screen in few years I bet). You disable some cool effects etc, but you do that with those #If Xbox360 fxRainbow.Enable = true; #Endif etc, so nothing huge. Compared to Linux-Android it is something quite easy. Mostly because of awesome IDE.
Wouldn't consider anything else.
I will definitely buy one. Love MS products and services and using them all integrated on my phone is the biggest thing they could ever made!

I'd be more interested to know what percentage of people would switch to wp7 in an iphone and/or android forum really. That to me is a better indicator of how well wp7 will do at launch.
I eventually want to switch, but ill do it further down the line when the OS matures.

I voted for sticking with WP7, all the latest videos I've seen show how super smooth it is so I wont be switching to clunky Andriod anytime soon
I am waiting to actually see how well the office, RDP and other apps integrate into windows before I pull the trigger on one. I really could care less about facebook integration or twitter or any social networking. Sure I use facebook, but I want to keep my contacts seperate from my social networking. I want a business device first. Not to say I won't try one out, but I intend on keeping my Tilt2 around unless they release a WM6.5 handset with a keyboard and a faster processor and more RAM! like that will happen...
And if it comes to switching platforms, android is next in line. No apple products ever in my house.

I am so ready to purchase one of Windows Phone 7 phones! Why? please... for those ppl who say WP7 is not as great as their beloved WM 6 series, you gotta let your ego go. And yes, i have HD2. So this is a customer with experiences with hacking my device and use cooked ROMs. And yes i hate using cooked ROMs. Althogh i use cooked ROMs that looks like stock version atm. But i am planning to purchase it in this holiday or wait for htc to announce HD3 the beast! I really want my phone to have 1.5ghz or something downgraded clocked duo cpu.

OnLive controller coming to Android

This is very promising. SGSII+Onlive Controller+MHL cable=Epicness. Anyone here know if any of the current Android emus(__oid+PSX4Droid) support multiplayer? If they do then I sense some epic goldeneye 64 matches occurring in the near future.

Ok when I bought my nexus, I was aware of the issues regarding the fragmentation of the Android market, which results in compatability of most games, and wasn't expecting to use the device as a gaming unit anyway, as I have an ipod touch, just for gaming. But was out on research this weekend and didn't carry my ipod, and due to the bad weather in England, ended up staying longer, were we was, so I read an article that stated that virtua tennis by Sega,which was previously only exclusive to Sega, was now available for other android devices, so bearing in mind this phone is Google, s own baby, fired android market or play, as it's now called, and you can imagine my surprise when I was met with "app not compatible with your phone ", seriously, what chance do other phones have if the Google phone itself has compatibility issues with some games unbelievable to say the least. So that means, the developers loose out as I cannot purchase the app, and this is were IOS is stronger, on gaming only, otherwise android is better everything else, I wish Google would sort this out.
It's up to the app developer to make updates for in this case ICS and higher resolution. ICS is still fairly young so not all developers have updated or will ever update their apps for new versions.

ICS will slowly work out problems such as this. The problem is that not everything that came before ICS will make the transition. The other problem is that ICS is too new. Aside from the Nexus users, ICS barely exists. Updates are only now rolling out for certain phones.
It's frustrating now, but hopefully in the future things will become better. Google is working hard at this. They've already started releasing better tools to devs.
If the app shows up on Google Play on your phone then it sure should be compatible or it would not be there. Did you change your screen density? That is one thing that will give you an app incompatability issue in the market.

Will we see OpenGL ES 3.2?

Ok, so I just ordered a Mi Max 128GB/4GB for Black Friday (from geekbuying) and was wondering if this device can actually support OpenGL ES 3.2, and I am asking if it can support it hardware-wise cause I know it won't work on android <7.0, so anyone know?
Adreno 5xx series GPU's have full support for EGL 3.2 with Android extension along with Vulkan support. So it's expected that they will be supported in Android 7~7.1.
Edit: & Android 7.0.1 is definitely coming (probably early next year in stable update):

Thank you, that's what I was expecting as well but even on Qualcomm's site the specs of the 510 are not clearly stated, also good to know we will in fact get 7.0.1 (although I plan to stay away from MIUI).
This should mean we might even be able to get at least somewhat decent Wii&GC emulation on this device in the future which is pretty exciting for me since there are still a lot of games I bought and never got around to finishing or even playing.

Don't have to high hopes that Dolphine emulator will fly on Adreno 510, the driver's especially sheder compiler are far cry from anything good also hardware capabilities (EGLS 3.2, Testilation engine & Vulkan compatibility) don't count much without proper & good driver's support. On the current Android gaming scene A510 is wonderful but it won't shy with Dolphine (nothing will, best behaviour you will have with New Rogue series [Imagination Technology] but their is no any newer SoC for Android with it we will see how will MTK X30 behave 2Q next year).
Edit: By the way this whose a best deal for it when I searched wanting to buy a full prime one in the mean time I decided not to go with it & instead both a 3/32GB S650 version in land where I live. But search again me by you can find a better deal.

I did not say it would fly but it would have at least somewhat decent performance which for me means playable, especially since most of the games I want to play are for GC not Wii and are RPG games (except perhaps the Sonic Adventure games but I can play the DC version of those if the performance is too bad), the only few Wii games I would like to play would anyway not be practical (if possible at all) because they use the huge mess that the Wiimote is (mainly Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World).
Plus I have seen Snapdragon 808 with the 7.0 dev preview (OpenGL ES 3.2 supported) running Dolphin quite well and even with lower performance that would be enough for me.
Either way I would probably end up starting the games and not finishing them for a long time as I keep doing, start them while traveling and then too busy with College and stuff to finish them and then start an other game (like I did with 7th Dragon 3 on my 3DS, Tales of Eternia for PSP and countless others) but it would still be nice to know I at least have the possibility of playing those games on the go.
Well A518 can all A418 on S808 can & probably a little more in time when drivers support all capabilities along with games/emus. Then that is settled its enough for you & it is a pleasurable experience to play on such a large display.
