[Q] Receiving A "Thank You" after Donating. - About xda-developers.com

When donating money to Dev's etc, wouldn't you think it be customary/polite to receive a thank you from the person(s) either through email, Paypal email or the forum? I am not mad by any means, just disappointed a bit. I donated to 3 Dev's ($10, $5, $5)(not counting other Dev's from other boards) about a month or two ago. Now understanding people might be busy, overlooked, forgotten is understandable, but donating to 3 different Dev's with no (even automated "Thank You" email LOL) is kinda disappointing. Nothing to lose sleep over of course.
Now, it's not like a lot of money was donated, but some is better than none usually. I only use the one Dev's Rom, and from my understanding the other 2 help contribute(plus others besides the 2 I imagine). Maybe $10's & $5 aren't enough to justify a simple thanks?

I would say a 'thank you' is always nice
Though are these devs of really popular apps? Maybe they haven't yet had time to set up an automated response.
If I ever get donations I would definitely say "thanks!"

I am surprised as well that I didn't at least have an automated response. Oh well I guess.

They make Roms, not apps, but are fairly popular I think.

I have always thanked people for donations but unfortunately like the OP have not always received the same courtesy. Makes me think that it was not appreciated.

Not everyone actually finds out...
I know some members (myself included), choose to direct donations to an account they don't control. So nobody gets a reply from me, that I know of... It's not out of lack of politeness or appreciation, more just that I actually don't know...
Not being here for the money, it makes no difference to me, so I put it to an account used to pay hosting bills

The "Thank You" comes in the form of further ROM development.

That's not good enough, at least for me. If your asking for donations, which anyone with a paypal etc that's visible to click on or the "buy me a beer" deal; "is" asking for a donation. Most people growing up have learned in their culture if asking for something, then getting it, results in the said person saying thanks.
Just as people asking for ROM's etc say thanks in their posts to the person. People wouldn't say thanks whether you make the ROM or not LOL. Only if you made it etc.
Further ROM development is done whether a donation is made or not, so that "Further ROM development" is a moot point.

If asking for donations, IMO, there is a responsibility to know who definitely appreciates the work. Sort of a moral obligation to say thanks. Nothing more, just a thanks.
When I've donated to various organizations. Salvation Army, Habitat For Humanity, hurricane victims etc, I've at least gotten the automated "thank you" responses LOL.
When it comes to Android, it's been another story...

Lol I always thank and still offer the same great help ..

[REQ] More Ranks on XDA

Hi!
Do you think that we should have more ranks on XDA like on other forums (PPCgeeks, MoDaCo)? Because after we reach the 100 post count, we are just 'senior members' and are ranks stay like that. It would be nice if we introduced more ranks, i.e - 200 post, 300 post we get new ranks!
Thanks!
Yea that would be nice but until then you got to love with it
I can't see any benefit in this? It's just a couple of words under your name...

No benefit, but atleast we can have the title which would be cool
@OP,
I´ll bring this to discussion
yeah, i'd say i would enjoy it. not really a necessity, but it'd be kinda cooool, lol
Great idea, i hope that it's implemented.
It might be a nice perk for those who donate - on other sites, once you've become a 'premium member' or donated a certain amount you have the ability to change your own title.
Thumbs up for this idea!
Why bother
Surely admin have better things to do - then come up with pointless words under our names? OK it may be fun, but still pointless, though I do like reinbeau's idea.
How about donating some money instead and have some lovely gold stars under your name -

XDA is a developer site
not a fun site
it's geared towards Programmers, Coders and ROM Chefs and all GOD almighty people beyond your regular user that comes joins, download the ROM and flash the phone, or download their Apps and go merry happy go round.
though the forum welcomes any feedback from the users regarding ROMs, MODs, HACKs, & APPs
it's not your regular forum to hang out and chill, as some people takes it for granted, and also brings all their ego and fights, etc, which turns this place more like a Playground than a Development Board
As you can see with all that in mind, there's no real need to add more Ranks as it's not a site for people to earn rank, unless you can Code, Develop, and make something useful and provide it for FREE to the members of this board.
I honestly don't see any benefit in this. Nonetheless is may or may not be harmless. I'm for one is don't care about ranks. I'll even get pointers/tutorials from new members with less than 10 post. It doesn't matter anyways.
Yes e all have our own opinions. But why not? It doesn't sketching a ifferwnce whether this site is a fun site or not. it just gives members more incentive. I guess thatas my own opinion though.

Well, as I suggested, it could just be a perk for those who donate - I don't see a lot of stars on many of the threads I participate in, I was just trying to come up with a creative way to fund raise to support the site.
XDA is growing, and you're attracting lots of new people - and many here are over the top helpful. So you're going toget a more social atmosphere as the site grows. That can be a good thing, as long as it's managed well - considering the audience, management is going to become more and more of an issue (I'm a moderator on a huge forum myself).

If people want to help ONLY to get to their new "rank", then that goes against what xda is all about. People here help others because they want to help, not because they want a higher "rank".

Thank you (to mods, admins, donators, developers, etc)

I'm sure this has been posted dozens of times, but a little thanks is never wasted in my opinion.
Thank you, creators of XDA, for giving me a place to ask for help and share my knowledge with fellow android enthusiasts.
Thank you, creators of XDA, for giving us a HUGE allotment for PMs in our inbox. Such forums as PBnation and NASIOC make you pay for extra inbox space. PBnation goes from 100 to 300 for $15/yr and NASIOC charges you $20 (I think) for 60 PMs (total crap) to increase to 400.
Thank you, mods, for doing what irritates the rest of us. Filtering through crap to keep this place civil. I've been a mod on many forums and there are many thanks due. Sure, half the time we "hate" you, but deep down we really don't (at least I don't).
Thank you, donators, for keeping this forum running. We are incredibly fortunate to have XDA and I feel the Android sales would decrease without this forum. "Well that's a stupid thought!" you might say, but here is my theory. Whenever I want to buy something, I research the crap out of it. What can it do, how can I modify it, what makes it tick, what are my options with x, can I change y, does this do that, can that do this, so on and so forth. If I can't find that information, I don't buy the product. I guarantee you XDA is one of the BEST, if not the greatest, sources of information for Android devices. I found all the information I needed to buy a captivate (broke my Apple addiction), atrix, inspire, infuse, and soon SGS2 all here on XDA. My mother and father do the same, all here on XDA. To me, that is tangible proof this forum pushes the Android revolution!
Thank you, you wonderful developers, for keeping the Android revolution moving. Truly, we all owe a great debt to you. Many of you work long hours for no money, AND THEN GO TO WORK! You do this for us, you do this for the "revolution", you do this because you are brilliant individuals. I've gotten the opportunity to meet some brilliant individuals in various sections of this forum, atrix, inspire, and infuse. Folks like boostnsubaru (who ports my beloved MIUI when he is allowed to ), N0ctrnl, dman3285, and MANY more have shared their expertise, as well as mistakes, and helped me become a more productive user. I'm now making my own mistakes, but now I can fix most of them! Why? Because these kind folks donate their time to help us. There is a forum out there, mainly for console game hacking, that literally hates people seeking knowledge and trying to learn. It is despicable to ask for help, and all you receive is useless insults. I'm sure some of you know the forum, I wont share the name. I mention this because XDA is quite the opposite, newcomers are treated (for the most part) with kindness and it is fantastic.
Thank you for reading this. I know its lengthy, and somewhat stupid, but I felt it necessary to post my thoughts. I give thanks during the holiday season for my new friends on XDA. Thank you all and merry Christmas!
Thankyou sir.
Happy holidays...

Can you guys/gals donate please?

I am just a ROM flashing newbie here, for the most part. I have had Android phones for 3 years or so but flashed my first ROM recently. Can you guy/gals please donate something to these developers? I have read some things where the donate to download ratio is ridiculously low.
I don't know what an appropriate amount to donate is. Maybe somebody can chime in on this. I donated $5 for my first ROM and the more questions I ask the developer the more I would donate. I plan to donate some more as I download more and more items.
If you can afford this phone then please donate something to these hardworking people. I don't know how many cans or bottles you would need to collect to get a few bucks but I guarantee the time it would take to get those cans or bottles is way less than the time these developers give to helping us all out.
DONT FORGET the costs associated with many of them having a website and the bandwidth they have to pay for when we download off of their site
You randomly read some statement somewhere that says donation to download is low? How about some specifics, such as rom and donations.
Your statement assumes too much, and not in a good light.
Most devs love them but don't expect them; they do it out of passion. Were it a financial burden, they would actively request or find hosts and help.
Also, with all the various rom devs, module devs, cross sharing, and kangers, who is to decide which persons or teams should really get donations?
Who says we haven't or don't donate?
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

Hey moderators.....can you please delete this thread. I posted originally and really don't feel like getting into an online s h i t throwing session with others even though I am generally very good at it. I appeared to spark a nerve.
I think this is a legitimate topic.
Asking for donations never hurt. I guess the right way to say it is, "think about donating to your fellow developer of the rom you are running."
For they are the reason you are enjoying your expensive phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
That's a better way of saying it. When I read the first post, it sounded like whoever read it is being presumptuously told that they're not being supportive of the ROMs they use.
OP, you'd be surprised how willing people are to donate on here. One example is... madmack brought CM10.1 to our devices, but wanted additional support from another developer. The developer agreed, but as long as he was able to have the funds to purchase the phone to test and work on it. In less than a few days, enough people had donated enough for him to purchase the phone, but I had seen that people continued to donate to him.
The premise of this tread isn't bad. Just know that when people on here see good work, they're very very supportive.

Thanks....Please.....

I see many people practically begging for "thanks" hits in their sigs. I was just wondering why this is? What are the advantages if any of getting a lot of "thank yous"
Personally I never ask for them and don't pay much attention to them on another's but some sigs have the request in big and bold letters sometimes twice!! I have been a member for a long time and this has always perplexed me. LOL
Thought i'd ask since I just read a post that contained THREE requests for "hitting the thanks button" $$$
Is it really THAT important?
Don't know but.
Thanks meter shows your reputation.
How much you are reputed.
And the more it is the more people listen to your help.
Its my way of think .
Can't say if this is the only reason.
There might be different also.
Let see. Even I wanna know it.
Someone will definately answer this
They suck!
But they decide how helpful / knowledgeable you are!
Thanks is something that isn't to be begged but gained!

There are many more posts like yours.
No they're not important.
At first someones thanks meter could be used to determine if a user was a helpful member, more so than others. Now though, due to major misuse of the thanks button, it means nothing because someone who rarely helps could have more thanks than someone who always helps others.

THANKS
YEP This is exactly what I meant. So many people trolling for "thanks" and even donation buttons lol
It certainly feels good that the advice you have given to others is appreciated, and this appreciation is shown through "Thanks" here on XDA. It also builds reputation, like others have said in this thread. The Thanks button loses it meaning, however, when people beg for them in their signatures or end their post with a similar sentence to "Hit thanks if I helped you!".
thanks is something people just click when they feel like it,
like an itch on your back,
you can scratch it if you want or you can ignore it,
or you can put mineral oil and rub it across..
anyways,
my point is,
you are not obliged to click the button,
if someone has helped you then click it or don't (you ungrateful BS)

Donation buttons are fine seeing as you actually gain something from a donation. As long as the person has a valid reason to ask (RTs, RDs and anyone who does a lot of original, time consuming work) there's no reason they shouldn't ask for a voluntary donation. As for thanks, I don't see any reason to ask for them specifically but they can often be a good indication of how helpful someone has been. Of course, sometimes they're a wildly inaccurate measure as people are thanked for funny or witty posts as well as useful ones. As for me, I use my own thanks to keep track of threads where people may require follow-up help of any sort.

I was referring to the general population putting "Donate to me" links on their moniker sections...Whats up with that? I don't pay much attention to thanks numbers. I pay attention to the information in the posts. IF its worthy I will hit Thanks IF they are not asking for it.
I don't understand the need for "reputation" I have seen misinformation come from people with a lot of thanks and good information from new members. Contributors who actually provide ROMS, Kernels, Apps deserve donations and thanks.

That is true. But to some, first impressions will affect their judgement of a reply, especially if the ones providing solutions are 'Recognized' members with tens of thousands of thanks. Of course, everyone is different. Some are desperate for thanks, whereas others are just glad to help.

Exactly. I've never ever press thanks if the poster explicitly mention/request/beg it in their signature or post, no matter how useful the information is. Begging for thanks for raising thanks meter is just plain pathetic in my dictionary.

Questioning if there is stickers to promote how appreciative I am forXDA is wothless?

Now that I know there is no stickers or products offered by this site is fine but it's interesting that a moderator would decide the thread is worthless when a long time member simply asks if there is stickers to put on the car. Another asked how that is relavant to apple which makes zero sense. I would hope that it is ok to ask and hope that it is ok to have an opinion that one should be able to ask. Anyways I want to thank RatchetPanda for having an actual contribution to the discussion. Maybe the moderator felt there would be some sort of flaming war over nothing so I can appreciate that. I see lots of people like Simms22 feel the need to critisize and contribute nothing which is fine too. Anyways thanks. What's really funny is people call me Panda so it's fitting the helpful person was also a panda :good: I promise not to want to promote XDA again, sorry.
Yes, just as this thread will invite flaming.
Unfortunately there are no XDA products like you requested available at this time.

No, it's good that you're showing an interest in XDA. I like that
Personally I would have left your thread open...but different moderators see things in different ways. We're all human. Well, most of us
We often have to close threads, not because of what the OP (you) has said...but because it could potentially lead to flaming by others in the thread.
But you made a good point. We've had a scattering of XDA merchandise in the past. But we have no consistent line of products available. It would make sense for us to have a few XDA branded things. Even just things like stickers.
I think the main issue is the cost of postage etc, given we're an international forum. We'd likely need to use a 3rd party to host some stuff.
I'll have a word in the ear of the other mods and admins...see if there's any kind of interest or potential in getting a few XDA items going
Thanks for being a member who's interested in the community :good:
