Rumor: Future Microsoft OS to run phones, PCs, tablets, consoles - Windows Phone 7 General

Hey guys, I just reported on a story that you may be interested in checking out. Very exciting news if it's true.

Here's the important part:
Turns out that almost exactly describes something we heard from a source the other day, and we’ve got some more details that point to a far more radical plan within Microsoft. What we’ve been told is that Microsoft is planning to somehow harmonize not only Windows for PCs and Windows Phone, but also the Xbox operating system sometime within the next four years — a timeframe that perfectly lines up with both the end of the Xbox 360′s 10-year lifecycle and the end of Windows 8′s expected three-year run. That would mean Microsoft’s next next OS will run on PCs, tablets, phones, and the next-gen Xbox when it hits sometime in 2015 / 2016. Yes, it sounds crazy, but it fits perfectly within the broad outlines Lees confirmed during his keynote yesterday. And that’s not even the wildest part.
Our sources also tell us that Microsoft is seriously considering ditching the “Windows” brand name in favor of something new when all this goes down. The idea is to rebrand this new super-OS with something that better fits with Redmond’s vision of the future. Obviously that could well change over the next few years as this plan takes shape — Steve Ballmer in particular has always been quite enamored with the Windows brand — but dropping the name is apparently at least on the table, and that’s a big step.

Interesting. Although many rumors say a new Xbox will be out before that time frame.

I love what Microsoft is planning! Too bad for me the one breaking that link would be the video game console. Xbox sucks. PS3 FTW! in everything else though, I'm a MS supporter, so lets do it big!

No surprise as quad core 2.5 GHz SoC's are right around the corner. Computer hardware isn't moving as fast as these mobile chipsets. In a matter of a few yrs, they're catching up. Plus they use far less power.

I think this makes total sense, and it was just a matter of time. The Windows 8 interface looks like the next level of computing. It doesn't make sense to have tool bars, and icons, and little notification things all over the place. And these tiles really are "windows", so it just reinforces their brand. Good stuff.
Back to video games, the transition to the next gen consoles will be interesting. Online play is SO huge now compared to what it was, how will they transition it all? I'm guessing that xbox live will stay as is, but 360 users won't be able to play with 720 users? But could probably still stay on the same friends list, join parties, etc. At least that woul make the most sense.

With all of Windows new announcements, the future of Windows is actually pretty exciting. [/nerdout]
Regardless of which console is better, being able to seamlessly move from phone to pc to tablet to xbox is going to be pretty good.

I'm curious why they haven't already. current hardware in phones are capable of 1080p output, recording, etc.
either there is a huge markup on pc's, or someone hasn't decided huge boxes full of unefficient parts is silly. think atrix like hardware... a quad core cpu in a phone sized pc... plug in a 500gb hdd, connect screen, bluetooth keyboard/mouse... viola

On the topic:
The idea of one OS for all sorts of devices is logical and consequent move following modern trends. I see no reason why products of one company should all have different interfaces. Super powerful phones will be able to run it without problems.
I will welcome this on two conditions:
1) Don't base the whole data communication on cloud only (like some parts of WP7 now)
2) Give us those sqared icons/hubs under start menu and keep the PC homescreen idea - with customizable looks and feel. I mean seeing those squares as a main screen on black background is depressive and claustrophobic experience, just like WP7.....

Possibly would be. We'd all have to see how the implementation works out though. As a general idea though, it's not a bad idea. It's something Bill Gates was pushing back before he retired. I believe that's why Live Mesh came out.

hurting sales ?
one of the reasons I think you'll never see this on windows, or apple:
4.5" screen phone/tab/whatever, quad core, dlna, huge 3000mah battery, here's the scenario....
make a phone call on it on the way home... unlock the house (bluetooth), walk in, toss it on the counter charger and shower. plop on the couch for some entertainment, fire up the bluetooth keyboard/mouse and dlna the phone (is phone accurate anymore?) to the big screeen on the wall.
rent a movie
email
google+ (facebook is dead, or will be in another week)
surf a little
make a LTE video call to mom (broadband cable just died too)
grab phone from charger and log you midnight run
possible ? yep, with todays hardware, less the quad core in the phone.
what's missing? sales. 3 of them:
pc
gamebox
tablet
the phone killed them all,and a one-os-for-all-devices idea killed them. mmm, maybe microsoft forgot about all those license sales too ?
thoughts ?

I don't see that as missing any sales. It's just that the sales will be structured differently. There will still be consoles, service and content providers, and other ways (possibly not even considered yet) to "network" the phone you describe.
Did the creation of satellite TV services kill cable? No, they adapted. Did Hulu kill either of those services? No. I don't see the scenario you described lessening sales in any respect. I just see smart businesses adapting to take advantage of it. The new Ford MyTouch system is a perfect example of that.

Well I can already send music via DLNA from my Phone to my TV using an LG E900 and an xbox 360 running Windows Media Center. I know that more and more TVs will be getting DLNA and LAN built in but at least for the time being I will always need some kind of set top box (in this case the xbox).
Anyway, I actually like the idea. This way you could write an app that will run on phones, tablets and maybe even the xbox using touchscreens and kinect, respectivly.
Dropping the "Windows" name: Windows is currently mostly known for Windows on the PC as a client and server OS. Windows Phone is not that popular and "Windows" is generally associated with not-so-hip concerning anything but PCs (phones, slates).
Hence, dropping the "windows" name might be a smart move because people might not buy "Windows" for their phone or living room.

This thread will be cleaned soon. Please stay on topic, this is not a debate or argument whether personal opinions on a console = superiority over the clashing view. Or for that matter, anything. Stay on topic from now on, this is the last warning.

You are wrong, this is a petty and childish response to a simple expression of opinion. Just because somebody expresses an opinion that you do not agree with does not entitle you to belittle that opinion. Especially when you resort to juvenile and homophobic insults to do so.
This thread is not about which consoles or social networks are better then the rest. If you wish to post please read the OP again and think about what your posting as any further derailment of this thread will result in its closure.
One more thing, guys, I know its a pain in the ass but if you see a thread heading in this direction then please drop one of the moderation team a PM, posting in thread is not the best way of getting our attention as we may not see it for some time. If you PM me for something like this however, I can usually get to it in a flash. (Unless Im asleep )
Carry on.... business as usual...

WOW INTERESTING!! my comments get deleted but the Xbox sucks PS3 FTW still stands? isn't that off topic too? such a comment opinion or not should not have a place in this thread. seems that the mods have some bias against Xbox too ¡increíble! I think this integration is a great idea and I certainly don't see Sony doing anything to combat this other than to create a music unlimited app for android (which isn't even owned by them).

I could edit his post so that it reads;
"I'm not a fan of Xbox, I prefer the PS3" but its would still be an expression of the samne opinion. One which is loosely within the topic of the thread.
I absolutely refuse to remove the comment altogether as it used to emphasise the fact that the user likes the idea in general however that part does not interest them.
The problems arise when someone decides to pick up on such a trivial detail and turn it into the focal point of the thread.
Either way, this discussion is over. The thread is back on topic.
And just fyi, there is no bias here, I absolutely could not care less about either Xbox or PS3. I'd much rather fire up the N64 and play through "The Ocarina Of Time"
All that aside, this discussion is over. The thread is back on topic.

Huh.
I'm surprised my comments didn't survive either.

Not a rumor. But confirmed.
Also this is off topic for this board. :|

Microsoft Haters

I may get roasted over this post, but it bugs me. First and formost not a big fan of the open source model. Have a friend that called me a freetard (I looked it up, some one who champions the cause for open source) when I had something positive to say about Andriod. Crazy! He is an iPhone, iPad user. iOs is based on Darwin which is open source. So when he made the argument for paying for software to drive innovation, it seemed a little odd. This guy is a rockstar in the IT world, but the iPhone smug is deffinately keeping him down. I was handed a Windows CE 1.0 device years ago and I could see the potential of this handy piece of equipment. Over the years I had some Windows CE based device at my side ever since. I have seen the rise of the Palm Pilot, listing to users complaing about how it synchs with outlook or doesn't until you buy something. I had my Pocket PC with Outlook, but the Pocket PC was not the rage so customers refused to even look. I was scratching my head as the Blackberry rose to power without the basic features I had enjoyed for years, it looked like a colorized version of a Palm Pilot. Enter the iPhone with the commercials touting listening to your music then answering a call. I was able to do that for years what was the big deal? Lotsa features in the iPhone at first were lacking.. how bout using songs as a custom ringtone... just plain old mp3 files.... nope you gotta jailbreak it. It was the must have items, if you had one you had status... it's a phone for crying out loud! Enter the G1 WITH NO OUT OF THE BOX EXCHANGE SUPPORT!!!! Use football, it sucks but it kinda works. Andriod is growing up into a much better phone O/S, better than the iSmug 4 (iPhone 4 for those who don't know a iPhone user or own one). Enter WP7 already condemed in the forums, even before official launch in the US. Windows CE from 1.0 to 6.5 were designed for lower resolution, smaller screens (excluding the screen size of the jornada and 1.0 devices) and a stylist. Phones are not like that anymore. A re-write has been long over due! From what I have read it's more like the Zune and it didn't act as a mass storage device either untill you installed a hack. I see the things it won't do as concerning sure, but as gamers argue the PS/3 is a better gaming box, it doesn't matter xbox is a more of a social network. I have seen the capabilities and it does now have huge potential. How many of you have installed Zune software and used it as a music player? Sure, internet radio is missing like a Winamp and it won't synch without a zune, that now has changed, but Winamp, itunes, any of them don't come close to the visual experiance and presentation of the zune software. Games that update your gamer score has my nephew frothing. Still has exchange support, better than Andriod when initially released on the G1.
Phones that had no out of the box tethering initially:
iPhone
Blackberry
Andriod
Palm O/S
All very successful O/S's. I think time will tell if WP7 is a hit or a miss, but in the tech world mediocre is usually the big winner. If tethering, mass storage support, and a few others are fixed in short order then who will you get behind? In all honesty I see huge potential in WP7. I have an xbox, use my phone as my music player... so bring on Zune software support! Work and play all in one device redesiegned for touch phones, I'm down to give it a try, to give it a chance to have some of it's limitations worked out in a few months. Don't be such a hater before it even has a chance.
You seem to be forgetting that not everyone wants what you want, there's loads of features which I consider unnecessary and others feel essential, and vice versa, does it matter? I don't think so. A friend of mine just got an iPhone 4, it's perfect for what *she* needs, I've never felt the need to ***** about how iOS is 'not for me'.
Using apps whilst on a call - I have never felt the need to do that, ever. I can, and it's nice to know that, but I can do without.
MS Exchange - I'm a teenager, what the hell am I going to do with exchange support?!
Tethering - I find it essential. No android doesn't have it built in (well, not included in shipping ROMs anyway), but I installed a *free* app, and now I can. I'm still able to sleep at night.
I agree that sometimes vendors can be a bit stupid about what they allow consumers to do (my girlfriend still can't set a wallpaper on her iPod touch, srsly), but as long as people are happy with their choice of device, does it really matter?

You're, in a way, making my point... I am not banging on Andriod here... not in any way. Stating a fact that all phone O/S's must grow over time. WP7 is a re-write, not an upgrade to 6.5 it will need to mature like the rest of them did. What your taking as a ***** about something is just the opposite, just saying hey there is potential there for a good device... see where it goes. As far as iPhone's go, maybe it is different in England... never been there, but people who own one here often times use it as statis. There is a funny youtube video on a lady who just wants one regardless and all they have in stock is an EVO. As I mentioned in my post... my nephew cares about the xbox points, I did not say I did. People should buy a device that does what they want not what others are buying. A phone doesn't make you better, it doesn't raise your status, and certainly doesn't make you more aware of the environment. An p.s. it is based on open source like the others. All that said isn't even a rip on the phone itself.
Many of those of us that are complaining about WP7 are long standing WinCE owners. My first WinCe phone was the BlueAngel but prior to that I had a jornada and acer n20w.
We don't hate M$ but we do feel let down by the focus of the new WP. I don't use face book or twiter, I don't want to play games, I don't give a toss about Zune, I don't want to have to open a windows live account.
I reserve the right to feck my phone up in an attempt to improve/personalise it.
I don't want a model T-ford with the engine hood welded down.
I would tend to agree with most of that a year ago. I got kicked in the a$$ by regular users.. same reason I got into this years ago. I was embracing change in the tech world it drove me to a point, but times have changed the way family's and businesses communicate. My supplier went off shore to the Phillipines, all my contacts there are on facebook. They know more about me then they probly should but has had a stronger team effect on our interaction. Good or bad technology is making leaps... it's a new direction. I am confident we are in the right place to drive the kind of change WP7 will need to make to have a more universal appeal. Nov 8 is big date for the O/S. I have a strong hunch no developer is gonna release a damn thing untill after that date.

Ah, yeah I get your point, and I agree. Somewhat thankfully, I don't think I've ever heard someone try to sound big because they own an iPhone, but I've never been to the states
I didn't see your post as complaining really. The title of the thread made me think "oh no, here we go again." But your post was not what I expected from that title.
I completely understand how some people consider no tethering a deal breaker. However, just look at other phone OSs and you will realize that tethering will happen, with or without the consent of the carrier or the OS builder.
The bottom line is simple. If any of the missing items are what someone considers a deal breaker, just wait it out. We will find out soon enough how development, both official and unofficial, will add to WP7s feature set.
I personally have a few concerns but nothing that would cause me any serious grief. This may not be the case for others. Comparitively, iTunes is a deal breaker for me with the iPhone. Android's lack of native and consistent music sync is driving me crazy. I doubt we will ever see the perfect device, so I just try to find something that provides me with the features that are most important to me.
Your mileage may vary!

Much like you I am seeing that communication is very different than it was 2 or 3 years ago and it has nothing to do with the iphone (most users I know don't really text, send mms or even watch videos on thiers). What has changed things is twitter and facebook. A company or individual can accomplish more in getting the name and recognition of a product faster through these type of mediums than anything previous. Email is secondary to texting, updating your facebook or tweeting when it comes to communication with most of the younger generation (under 30). Most of my family that I had to force to use facebook is all over it now (ages 15-20) and our ability to cross reference our products (music, photography, etc...) or simply keep up to date with family events is much easier than before.
Windows Phone 7 taking advantage of these services makes it a desirable, easy to use product that looks great and allows growth in the future. The last 5 years has proven Windows Mobile is not going to sell and targeting only the closed in person who shuns social interaction through these mediums will be the fastest way to have a product fail.
no cut/paste will be the ultimate demise of wp7
Wow! I was expecting to get ripped from one side to another for merely mentioning a wait and see attitude. I am surprised to see other people get the point it is a direction change and much needed. A Great phone just does no cut it. With HTC sense and an Energy ROM I have everything I want to know right on the home screen, plus internet sharing, etc, etc... for me it's better than Andriod, but look at the market share for a once dominate phone. It's just not good enough, I think we can all agree a new direction for Microsoft is needed like it or not. I for one am looking forward to it, just need to rethink how I might get around the obsticals of the stuff that does not work. Hopefully, the HD2 will see a ROM soon hacked or not so I can get into it without pluncking down a bunch of cash for it.

It is already in the next update and is already being tested with the latest builds of the OS. There is no reason to be concerned unless waiting a couple months without c/p is going to cause a major problem for you.

Hi I had a Windows Mobile Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and an Htc Diamond 2 but when Android arrived in the Market from Hero 1.5/2.1 to Desire 2.2 is been a great experience now. I am very happy and life is very easy. Android is the future of smartphones. Go for Android you won't make a mistake!!
I love Microsoft! I especially love developing for them. I think Visual Studio 2010 could quite easily be considered the best development environment in the world.
I love the fact that most people world wide use the same operating system, and that I can develop a single program and expect it to work on most peoples machines.
This is why I want WP7 to work well. I want to feel happy with it. I want others to feel happy with it too, because I want it to be a roaring success.
This is why I b**ch and moan about features that have been intentionally left out
That's exactly how I feel, except mines is from a consumer point of view.
MS always makes something with great potential, but then they half do it. Its like that with every MS product except the desktop.
Hmm... Could Microsoft do better? Sure. If you think Google has the magic pixey dust to make the perfect phone O/S that will make everyone happy you need to get out more. Apple and Blackberry have their own issues. I cringed creating a gmail account when I setup Andriod on my phone. Sure Microsoft has privacy issues, but at least I know with them I am the customer. With Google more often than not, your not. Has anybody listened to Eric Schmidt talk? The guy is just plain creepy, Google had to shut him up. "If you don't like street view just move." Ok, so where is it safe Eric? Your place? Oh I get it he is saying he is Noah and we must follow him to his ark. Look, all I am saying is give WP7 a chance.
Just FYI
HTC Support
Will there be any upgrade path to WP7? Free or purchase?
"I understand the importance of having the most up to date software for your HTC HD2. At this time, there are no plans on releasing a Windows Phone 7 update for any HTC device. I do apologize for any confusion that you may have had, I hope this clears things up for you"
XDA is officially my only hope for the HD2 and if nada then this phone will be worth very little in short order
The only thing that could change the path of t-mobile and HTC if t-mobile is sitting on thousands of HD2's only way they could unload them after the 8th is upgrade the phone!
Im pretty sure all WP7 updates will come via Zune

If the future means having to reboot you phone, Or even worse have it fail to restart because a poor App. [I will give it a miss thanks.]
I have not enjoyed being left without a phone the few times this has happened.
Just give me a stable OS any day. [ Reliability is a key for success]

Man.....talk about Negativity...

So I went to ATT and was looking at the focus, and the guy came up to me and said if I needed any help, I said that I was just looking at it cause im gonna buy it later, then he sorta laughs and says "yea you dont want that man" I said why? Then he started to explain how it has no apps, wont be updated, how Android is SO much better, how it wont get no support and how it is a very closed platform, how its too late in the game and will never catch up to android and iOS.
whats up with all this hate? it makes me sorta discouraged to even go for this phone....
Well, that guy is only relaying what he knows, and nothing more. Just like when tv sales people try and tell you that LCD will outlast Plasma. They don't know what they're talking about.
I had a similar situation. Asked when the new WP7 devices were coming in. The guy said "why bother? go with Android" so I gave him the rundown. Told him about my history of phones, and my experience with them. I then told him how he may think that an open system is great, at which point, the other Android sales people came and encouraged him on. Yes. Open is the way to go, it's great. So many applications, blah blah blah.
Then I grabbed the X10 mini pro. I said, "this is a nice phone." and they all smiled and encouraged me to try it. Then I told'em "wait, what version of Android is it running" and one of'em quickly replied "1.6" and that's when I said. "That's weird, I thought 2.2 was the latest one? Oh right, that's what happens when your product is open to just about anyone out there. One program will work here, while it won't work or even show up on another one."
That shut most of them up.

Greatness.
This also happens in T-Mobile stores, all the time. The people who work in the stores are worse fanbois than some of the people on this forum, and will lie and cheat you out in an attempt to sell you an Android phone.
I have noticed an incredible amount of bian in Android's favor when it comes to the CSRs in T-Mobile stores. I didn't notice much of that in AT&T stores, TBH, but when I'm "shopping" I'm usually rude and make sure I get the point across that I "Don't need help... Stay the hell away from me..."
Cause I don't trust any of those crooks.

Unfortunately he is so right.
The more I use WP7 the more I realize how MS (probably fascinated by the iPhone commercial success) decided to stupidly mimic the iPhone: locked OS, no flexibility, no openness, no freedom, no USB drive, no file explorer, no way to import documents.... Only restrictions and limitations
I wonder when people here will open their eyes?
With Xbox live in the phone I 100% want the phone closed. I don't miss it being open anyway, if you need the os to be open it is easy enough to choose an android phone.
i do see that it is locked down and closed. given my experience with the openness of WM6.5, i'm glad that it is a bit more controlled. It's still early days and it's really hard to judge what MS will do with the platform. MS needs to satisfy their OEMs as well as the end users, and who knows where things go with WP7.
But do you want to know the difference between MS and Apple though in all this? MS are actually willing to work with homebrew'ers, rather than try and sue everyone who tries to go outside of what their grand master plan is (Apple). We shouldn't really pass judgement till the platform matures a bit more. Perhaps this time next year we will know where MS really stands.
The reason for the closeness and control is to avoid all the fragmentation that WM and Android experience. All the Android people will say, but 70%+ are on 2.1/2.2... which may be true, but given it a few more years where people won't go out and rush to get new phones and you have everything ranging from 1.5 to whatever they'll be at then, and OEMs/carriers don't roll updates to old devices. At least with the Apple approach, you're going to be supported longer than the OEMs/carriers would have.

Indeed, I certainly should have chosen Android. Honestly.
My weakness is that I'm a loyal customer. I always had WM6.5 devices, no Android, no iPhone.
But acually I did not expected the OS would be so limited and locked. It has never been MS' philosophy.
I am still very surprised to see that several xda members accept to be tied to a PC, tied to Zune.
Anyway, you cannot criticize if the guy in the shop tells you how much WP7 is locked. Because it's actually true, and potential customers should know.
Wp7 Xbox LIVE is a absolute joke. Wow I can edit my Avatar, and get some cheesy gamer points. Its partial Xbox LIVE at best.
I was expecting so much more.

If a salesman was to tell me that I would say "SWEET!" and proceed to immediately check out with it...hmmmm....come to think of it, that actually did happen! lmao
I much prefer the closed system approach and would have that Android salesman buying a WP7 phone.
So From what I gather from this thread, you should go for WP7 if you want updates and streamlined experience, but Android if you want openness and more features but you may or may not get updates?
Im very conflicted here as I am a heavy android user and I do find that it can lag at times and its very annoying that I dont get the updates as soon as they come out, but imo the pros outweigh the cons in Android, I love how I can just connect it in USB mode and copy files, how I can use any Mediaplayer to copy my music (mediamonkey), and other little things, I really think I'd miss those features on WP7, especially the USB mode, BUT man its a beautiful OS and I would love to get updates as they come out, not a year later or even at all.
Very conflicted here, I really like the Focus but WP7 is in its very early stages and combine that with the SD Card issue, Im a little hesitant, on the other hand the Moto Olympus should be coming very soon and it looks to be great hardware wise....
argh.

what exactly were you expecting? games are slowly coming into place and sure a lot of them are ports from iPhone, which is expected. As for xbox live integration, you get all that is expected from the xbox equal, that is seeing achievements, seeing/messaging friends, and the game splotlight. on the xbox you get additional things such as the music/video market place which zune provides. so what exactly does it not have which you were expecting? maybe recommend it on the future updates thread as part of missing features?

iOS and (now) WP7 phones (will) have a longer support lifecycle than Android phones, due to the nature of the operating system that runs on them, and the way the hardware spec is controled by Apple/Microsoft. Android users have the option to mod their phones up and [basically] self-support, but that only goes so far, you know, especially when newer android phones come out using conflicting hardware platforms (I wonder who's gonna be porting Nexus S ROMs to Snapdragon phones, etc.).
There is no SD Card issue on WP7. There's an issue of customer expectations and an issue of people having terrible reading comprehension.
If you want a phone with more storage wait for one to be released.
I would not rely on the [rather early] results of people on this forum who swapped memory cards.
Would suck to pay $80+ for a card and have it fail on you a some months down the road with all your **** on your phone, would it not?

How about actually doing what the name implies. I want real live multi-player gaming. Every other OS has it except WP7. I want the Xbox LIVE experience that we were promised, not this half assed POS. Microsoft had a huge potential with this.
My experience at the AT&T store involved a guy with an iPhone who knew the minimum about android but nothing about wp7. He was a little negative on wp7 just because he wasn't a fan of how the UI looks, but then, I could see that.
Honestly though, my decision to get the Focus wasn't because of some sort of brand loyalty or because of a list of pros and cons. I walked around and screwed with the CSR by playing with everything in the store, and got the one that I liked the most. I have to admit that it was a close competition with the Captivate, and I understand that folk have had a good deal of success in making the Captivates faster, but after having to continuously tweak the bejeezus out of my tilt2 just to get it to be usable, it was really nice to pick up the Focus and have it work, and be fast at it, right out of the box. Sure, that's not gonna work for everyone, but I'm cool with it for now.
I am leaning toward wp7 but I hope down the line some kind of app or hack can allow us to use the phone in usb mode, allow us to sync with other media players, an app that can play divx/mkv files, and jusr little things overall, hope wp7 can do well, just so much negativity I see about it...

I don't know why anyone on here is suprised by wp7. It has been reported this way for months and discussed on xda ad nauseum.
As for the at&t CSR, I have seen the same thing at t-mobile and if I was MS I would be a little pissed off about it. They are happy to bash the "closedness" of WP7, but don't talk about the issues with Android (fragmentation, lag of the vibrant).
I love Android but the WP7 experience is very good.
Those who bash WP7 should wonder what it would be like if xda and forums like it did not exist. How strong is the actual carrier support or google support for. Android? Dont think free is actually free. It has a cost too.
To each his/her own but choice is good.

Microsoft's "Slam-dunk"

News is starting to surface, as I long suspected it would, that Windows 8 is going to support cross-platform silverlight apps, so apps that run on your WP7 device will also run on your PC.
If this means apps you've already purchased for your phone will be downloadable from the Windows 8 marketplace and runnable directly on your PC without further cost, then I say this feature will completely rock, and it will shake up the market. It will, IMHO, really switch people on to both Windows 8 and WP7, and help WP7 slaughter Android and iPhone.
Kudos to Microsoft for this stroke of genius.
It also ties in with Windows 8's enhanced cloud data support, which would be needed if both phone and PC are to share data in their respective apps.
If apps could sync their data to the cloud, then you could literally swap between devices and use the same apps which would have the same state info - You could be running a comic reader (such as Comica) on your phone, which has been set to read only particular comic feeds, be looking at last week's Dilbert, switch to your laptop/tablet, fire up Comica on that and be landed exactly where you left off on your phone, with the app set up to receive exactly the same feeds! It would be the perfect backup for your phone as well :O)
Awesomeness.
They are also bringing Silverlight to the Xbox (finally), so yeah - awesomeness indeed
Microsoft have always had great ideas to be fair. Their big problem is they are always so slow to deliver that eventually they're outdone by someone else by the time things come together.
I don't see that changing unfortunately.
If only we had MS employees with actual power in the company who read XDA and other tech sites regularly to see what the hordes want and implement all reasonable ideas in a reasonably short amount of time...

considering windows 8 beta is coming out this year with a massive graphic overhaul and tablet mode, with ability to run appx and exe, I would probably think microsoft may be doing something right.
What really amazes me is that part of windows 8 can be scalable for mobile devices...something intel wants (due to the metro ui nature and easy finger friendly gui)
Again microsoft may be on to something. Heck I hate the ifad and I abhor the android 3.0 so microsoft's tablet offerings should be quite interesting

XDA is not really the place to find hordes of people. We are a select few, and a small percentage of the user-base.
Now, we actually need to see a device and prices.
well this would be an interesting change:
m$ making finger ui elements for desktops instead of the other way around.
can't see hords of people getting excited about silverlight though.
the only app (ok not really) I use or can imagine using between both is google maps. contacts, calendar, gmail already sync easily enough. bookmarks in ffox, history, etc, is this really a new idea ?

I don't think the goal is to be running the exact same app on different platforms. You can't really, the input methods are different and so are the form factors (any good iPad app is likely different from its iPhone equivalent). What we'll see is ~90% code reuse, where developers only need to change user facing parts of their applications.
Anyway, with the inclusion of Windows 8 and Xbox 360, the market for this app platform will be an order of magnitude larger. Developers should come flocking.

Don't forget though that Windows 8 will have a touch-optimized GUI, so should be able to handle any app designed purely for touch, such as WP7 apps.
But I'm with you on the fact that they'll have to recompile the code for the two target devices though.

Exactly this. As long as MS does this right - by providing the same APIs on every platform - "porting" an app from WP7 to Slate to Desktop to Xbox (i.e. all three screens) will be as easy as designing different UIs for each platform.

You're wrong though. Developers did flock to WP7. They have flocked to the Xbox. There are droves of them for Windows in general.
While apps does not a platform make, it sure as hell helps and since MS has the best developer tools in the industry ... well, developers will develop for their products.
Not sure what devices and prices you want to see, this thread is about cross platform app support, not slates or tablets or TVs or mobiles.

But they are selling. Don't know what data you've seen but everything I see indicates WP7 are selling fairly well. Hell, [some] devs make more money on WP7 than they do on Android.
As for devs running away - once the three-screens and a cloud scenario is all ironed out there really is no point in developers leaving. The Xbox is already doing great for games, the PC is doing great for apps - if you are a developer for either of these and you can suddenly release for the other platforms without investing tons of time and money, you will.

I have no idea how well they are selling. I'm actually not saying they aren't. I don't know. However, all I've seen so far was that sales are decent given the circumstances - few devices, very limited number of markets, only half the carriers in the US etc. etc. In order for all devs to make a lot of money WP7 will have to sell much more phones than now. If it doesn't happen within a year or so they won't be too happy. I'm not suggesting that it will happen though.

Look, this three screen scenario is awesome. But I'll believe it when I see it. I have a Windows Phone, an XBox, several Windows PCs and a Windows Home Server. Windows Phone has this sync over Wi-Fi capability which is great. But I don't use it because my Windows PC is a notebook with an SSD and I don't have space there to keep all this music. I have it on my WHS, but does Microsoft let me install Zune there? No. I have some other music there, and I can stream it to my XBox. Does XBox use the awesome Zune interface to control playback? No. It shows me some pukeware stuff. And I have to use my PS3 to actually listen to music from my WHS, and XBox to stream Zune Pass stuff. ****, they don't even let me install their weird Media Center on my home server! Can I use my Windows Phone to control XBox playback? No. And so on.
Microsoft has been a horrible performer in terms of making their products work with each other. And sometimes when you think that something will obviously work between their products, you just can't imagine reasons why this shouldn't happen. But it still fails to happen time after time.
So while in principle this cross-platform Silverlight XAML-based awesomeness does sound thrilling, I've learned not to get too excited about opportunities coming from such things, knowing how Microsoft is an expert in screwing up interoperability.

Exactly what is going to happen. By the time MS releases Windows 8 (2012-2013) it will either have already been done (probably by apple) or no one will care anyway as they will have moved on to tablets as their main computing device. And I dont really see what the big draw is, I prefer fully featured programs on my pc rather than phone version with limited functionality due to the target device's shortcomings.

mmm... you are partially right: mac laptops are pretty. that's not why they sell though.
they have nicer keyboards, and the reputation of being used instead of maintained. no virus mess, no reboots, no bsods. the reputation is what sells them. MacBooks are sold primarily to college students who have zero idea of anything you just mentioned. When was the last massive virus outbreak? BSOD? Needed reboots? I'm not talking about $200 laptops here, I'm talking genuine Windows capable machines... Kids go after Apple products because they're cool & pretty, has zero to do with function or reputation... The iPhone has a reputation of horrid service, bad antenna placement, & overpriced plans... It still sells though... And Mac OSX or whatever they hell it's called now has a reputation for lack of software, incapabilities, and overall hindered use, yet I can tell you the majority of 18-22 year olds at my University want a new, shiny one...
Windows7 went far in taking function, and making it pretty. Windows Phone 7 did the same, took function, and made it smooth and pretty... They've lost some features in the short term, but they've accomplished their goals of making them consumer friendly and hip...
I'm not as pessimistic as a lot of these Microsoft/Windows/WP7 haters on this forum, I see a possitive outlook... Microsoft has never really done anything to make me think differently... I mean, people here have said "Apple will do it first" - how exactly? What 'new' feature has Apple EVER come out with? They take existing technology, make it look shiny, and market it. I give them all the credit in the world for that. But as far as beating Microsoft to something as innovated and incredible as cross device perfection? Nah, won't happen.

Review : XBox Live For Windows Phone.

As posted on L337Ware
Function : Provide gaming hub for Windows Phone.
Pros : Many of the features of XBox Live on the 360 are here such as text messaging amongst live subscribers, avatar customization, achievements, and leader boards.
Cons : Well to put it bluntly it's a little bit of a tease. Voice messages and voice chat are clearly absent though well within the capabilities of the phones. The avatar marketplace is a no show. True multi player gaming is pretty much non existence here. No access to videos and additional content available on the 360. No support for themes. No option to choose placement of apps outside of the hub.
Recommendation : You really don't have a choice here. If you want to game on a Windows Phone or even use certain applications that are even mildly related to gaming you will end up dealing with this hub. It's a severely crippled version of the Xbox Live you've come to know and love on the XBox. The glaring lack of functionality to include the lack of multi player titles and social tools inside of the games themselves are pretty unforgivable considering appearances of such features in games on other platforms. In the end I can't say I'm not left simply disappointed at this take on the Xbox Live brand.

Isn't that multiplayer XBox-Live? Or am I missing something?
Actually, voice messaging/chat isn't well within the capabilities of the phone. Until Mango is released all network traffic is done thru HTTP which adds way too much lag to use for live voice chatting. Messaging would work, but why re-invent the wheel when full socket support is coming later this year?
The lack of true multiplayer gaming is due to the same reason - http just isn't a viable alternative to raw sockets. The best you can really do at the moment is turn-based games, and they do exist.
Adding content to the home screen is, as someone else already pointed out, as easy as long pressing the title and selecting pin to start.
This is one area where I can truly appreciate peoples comments about this being v1 of a new OS - no other mobile platform has done this already and what's already on WP is pretty damn good considering the current platform limitations.
Remember, all we've seen of Mango at Mix 11 was the developer-centric stuff. MS have yet to announce all the consumer-centric goodies and I bet XBox-live multiplayer realtime will be a part of that.
I'd really like to see a multiplayer Halo game on WP7, controlled by a bluetooth XBox-controller.
The HD7's kickstand would enable use of that while the phone is stood on a table (e.g. when on the train)
How cool?

Or more accurately "turn based multiplayer" you still have more than one player which makes it multi, even if that isn't quite what you wanted in multiplayer.
Can I just point out that the "hub" isn't the "Xbox Live" hub it's actually called the "Games" hub.
I also want to say that while I tend to agree that it is vital to the success and pricing of Live titles to incorporate more features, I whole heartedly believe that they are coming sooner than later. People continuously call me a fan boy, but I'm more of a realist in the case of this OS, and realize that Rome wasn't built in a day. I see the effort, and if you don't, you're blind. And I see the potential. So much has been said about the lack of updates, and "oh, I'm God, so I demand updates on my schedule in small packets or I'm going to Android" that nobody has realized the reality here. Features, like the ones discussed here, are going to be so tightly integrated it's going to be amazing. Just watching MIX, you see WHY they haven't released small updates yet, and I've said this in other threads. One feature links in 13 different areas, it's all integrated. So we see this with the socket support, and multitasking, and the ability to control background processes... When these are released, I think we are going to see a wave, and I mean WAVE, of new applications which will completely revolutionalize WP...
^ maybe you're right. However, if and when Microsoft introduces true multiplayer gaming in 2012 or later. It will more than likely be for Windows Phone vs Windows Phone only.

I disagree, I see no reason why someone on an XBox shouldn't be able to play against someone on a WP7 in realtime. This is going to be killer, MS will not miss this opportunity to outdo iPhone (for which there is no equivalent games console) and Android (closest thing is Xperia Play which is a bit poo).
I don't see any logic in your prediction.

Yeah they WP with Kinnect. However my point is in the mobile world. WP vs iPhone or WP vs Android, as we already have iPhone vs Android games(they're awesome).
Since the Xbox Live brand is involved I'm sure the chances of WP vs anything not Microsoft related are slim to none.
If you haven't noticed 360 users haven't been running in droves to purchase these phones. The average 360 user isn't of contracting age.

I have to disagree there, especially considering that playing online on a 360 console actually costs money, and usually requires you be an adult... I have no idea where this misconception comes from that all Live players are kids, or even that half of them are... I'm assuming from people who have never played a day online.
I also don't see this phone as just "Live" services, there are other games that will go cross-platform... Has Apple developed a game that interacted with Android users? How about Google with iPhone? All the games are third party, aren't they? The Live games will interact with other Live games, obviously, I don't see why there would be any surprise or negative feedback there... But I do see third-party, real time multiplayer coming sooner than 2012, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them get released once Mango goes live, as they would have been developing for a few months by then.
I don't get why people are so negative about things, as it is now, developers have pushed the available apis to their limits, why would that suddenly stop with a larger user base and greater access? I expect these sorts of post from certain biased users, but not users that appear to have brains most of the time.
I would also take the time here to note that if Google, or any other random developer, released a brand new desktop OS at this moment, version 1.0, would the same retards in this forum who are so Anti-Microsoft/Pro-Google be quick to say "this is trash because it doesn't live up to Windows 7 of today" or would they be hypocrites and label it a first release and state it has more features than Windows 95 did? Because I guarantee you it would be the latter, as we saw when Android was released in its G1 form far behind iOS.
Version 1 where is it? Please show me version 1. Get over it, this is a continuation.
I'm not being negative, just realistic.
How much do you want to bet Microsoft wont allow third party multiplayer games? They will have to go through Xbox LIVE.
Xbox LIVE users are different than the average 360 user/owner. Matter of fact I haven't met a person on Xbox LIVE who knows what WP7 is. Get on there and ask people yourself.

I wasn't specifically talking about you, but this isn't a continuation, nowhere near it, and as long as you guys continue to paint it as one, you'll have ignorant, biased opinions...
And you're making assumptions, they allow games like AlphaJax right now to utilize what they can, I don't see why they wouldn't in the future. You guys create these scenarios where a lot of users come, think you know what you're talking about, and believe this bs... I can't keep track of how many people said that most of the features announced for Mango would take 2 years to implement...
A lot of people had no idea what Android was until Verizon joined the party, and even still, 8 out of 10 people will call any Android phone a Droid, and tell you that their Droid Does... Expecting overnight success isn't realistic, and neither is making assumptions when you have no idea what you're talking about, or have any type of track record to go off of...
I also only brought up 360 because you made the point of the user age... I don't see many people buying it just because of that from a platform standpoint because this isn't called "Xbox Live Phone" it's called Windows phone... I know a crap load of Live players who own Macs...
By the end of this year, I think we'll be looking at these devices entirely different. Both from a gaming standpoint and functional standpoint. Though, the phone is more than functional 99% of the time for me.
What number comes after 6?
I'm ignorant though.

Why would they not allow it? They allow you to make them today and will obviously continue to do so once there is raw socket support. They are however rolling out more support for indie developers to gain access to XBL as well, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more and more of the great games we have today become XBL games with achievements and whatnot - this does command a minimum price of $2.99 however.

--edit--
Oh and come on, WP7 is obviously a v1. Sure, it's built ontop of the same old WinCE kernel (well, an updated one) but it has absolutely nothing in common with the previous Windows Mobile versions. You couldn't even take a native WM6 app and run it on WP7 without heavy modification - and that's not just because of the locked down nature of WP.
Well done guys, insults are the way to go. I wonder more and more how old people on this forum are.

I think you might be a touched mixed up here. Dev Unlock is still available. It requires registration with MS via marketplace, and does cost $$, though there are several options. The Chevron unlock took advantage of a hole in the OS Scheme to produce a similar unlock. Microsoft did close that hole in NODO I believe. For a short while a variation of the Chevron unlock was available, with support from MS. I believe this has now expired and is no longer available.
Whether or not a true jail break will be available for the lumia is unknown. MS appears to have put a good deal of effort into this type of security. This is not to say it won't be broken. Also, to say the great minds of XDA are on it. Maybe some of the great minds, most likely few to none. Most of the great minds of XDA are android based, where hacking, modding and rooting, though not exactly easy, is common.
With all that said, I'd like to believe, nothing is really impossible...except may be the Cubs winning the World Series.
It is somewhat ironic that the most secure platform (to date) is the least supported. You'd think developers would be more inclined to produce for a platform where their software isn't likely to be pirated. Obviously there is the issue of WP selling less than iOs or Android phones but that's due to lack of apps!
This is my first Windows Phone and so far loving it and I would not want to pirat any software.

That is an interesting point.. I guess they (developers) care more about volume, than anything else.
People seem to love the platform tho.. You rearly hear people complain about WP, so that is indeed good news for Microsoft and Nokia.. the developers will follow the consumers.

There are always opinions by closet experts as to why things are the way they are. I can recall when Android came out...everyone laughed...Same for iPhone, both have gone on to change the industry.
I'm of the personal opinion that Windows Phone's place in the world is less about Android and Apple and more about Microsoft. Microsoft, for whatever reason, gave away the smart phone market. Perhaps through lack of foresite...or perhaps indifference, it doesn't matter. They went from First to Worst.
As you look at a renewed Microsoft, and the progress it has made attempting to catch up, you have to be impressed. Google and Apple have a keen idea looking straight at the Windows Phone. In 2 years they've gone from Gen 1 laughers( just like android) to competitive models, without sacrificing their core goals.
The list of complaints about Windows Phone is interesting:
-No customization
-Rooting
-No apps.
I'm really not sure how important they are in the scheme of things. You want a picture of your dog or grandma on the home screen....hmmmm
No rooting....what this breaks down to is trying to get something for free. How can I hotload ...sideload...a favorite app...or by pass the fee for tethering...
No Apps. Just how many apps do you need? The MS Marketplace is approaching 100k apps.Everyday, more and more name apps are coming to Windows Phone. How is this any different from what Android and Apple did? They did not have a full library for years.
In the Hardware range, the biggest complaints are:
-No dual/Quad Core
-No SD card
-Lack of Hardware offerings
Microsoft has said, they will not offer dual/quad core until they can resolve the battery issues. I do not want to be one of those people who says... " Hey, I got a Quad core thingy"....whose battery last 45 minutes. A small core of hardcore people use their phones to a more fuller potential than MOST other people. Using cloud storage and streaming, office integration...exchange and enterprise mails with Cloud capabilities. My girlfriend uses her Samsung Focus S more fully than I do my lumia. She runs an entire HR department, from her phone. It's amazing.
No SD card. This is a good one. We all want the ability to carry our stuff with us. But SD card integration is a hack. Its a hack in tablets, It's a hack in phones. Microsoft has said, until they can integrate it seemlessly, its not part of the design of their phones. Apple doesn't do it. People respect them. Android does do it....And Android is another word for hack.
Lack of Hardware: Is not exactly the fault of MS, Android or Apple. They write their wishlist. The OEMs come back with the designs. It was very obvious, Gen 1 got the bottom of the barrell. This years Mango's releases, got better. WP 8 should see competitive hardware and design.
Once the hardware for WP is on par with the 10,000 yearly Android releases, then the real battle will begin. I read something about xbox the other day....xbox sells more games than sony and nintendo combined. And Xbox is replacing Zune, extending into TV, and has a huge focus on the Marketplace.
The bottom line reality is this, in my opinion. Its all about $$. Android is attractive because, to the OEM, its free. Apple and WP both cost the OEM $$. But, Android is the least reliable hardware out there. Apple may be reliable and attractive, but it costs more...way more to the OEM. They are looking for a viable competitor. WP falls in the middle, with the added luxuary of being able to sync directly with a PC, Laptop, and I bet, a Tablet.
I think the odds of WP being way more successful in the future is strong...regardless of the number of apps. Do you really need 45,000 weather apps to scroll through, before you decide to download Weather Channel?
lumia 900
Hi all new to this forum, recently. Bought. The lumia and love it compared to my last phone (android os). I came across a site called mobile9 that did themes for the lumia. I loved all the different choices of tiled live themes but to no avail I could not download the xap file as windows doesn't support it. I looked everywhere and came about chevron wp7 I sent the cert file to my phone in an email and saved the cert to my phone all looked promising untill the next bit. I was required to open the chevron.exe file it came up with two tick boxes one for a pin lock check and one for something else. I clicked the unlock button and it came up with a oops error saying make sure my usb is connected which it was and make sure Zune is up which it was. It says that it can't connect coz of that. So if anybody knows what else I can do to get those groovy tiles on my phone then help please and in laymens terms as I don't understand technical jargon. Hope someone. Can help real frustrated.

Thank you. However, I was a first generation Adopter, from, WM 6.5. I was NOT happy. I ran to Android and stayed there for a year. That year seemed like 5 though. I went through...oh heck....you see my sig line. There is something to be said for a phone that just works.
There will always be phones that have features you wish yours had. But, I very much try to be fair about it, meaning....do I want that ability to by pass fees....or do I truely think that phone is better. For me the Nexus 1 was awesome....I still have it. When the hacks took over and started mucking with it....some of the functionality lost its luster....and the excitment about a phone that works disappeared.
I'll be honest here.....since I got my Samsung Focus S, coming over from a Droid Bionic, I have not looked at an Android. I was focued solely on WP. When the 900 came out....I've looked at nothing else. I have had to adjust my impressions of the phones....instead of thinking ...whats next....I now think...what can I do. I've experienced no lack of focus or functionality with my Lumia since I turned it on. Using the cloud, I now use it for about 80% of all my electronic needs away from the Desktop computer at work. I turn on the laptop at home occasionally. I have a Kindle Fire, yes, a droid, for my reading pleasure. But Windows Phone has solidified my preference for a simple solid device...that does not require hacking to extend functionality or evade costs. Thats not a jab at people who do root. I've just grown tired of it. Want wifi to really work....install this hack. What to tether...for free...install this hack..but don't complain about what you can't do afterwards...
I like the direction of Windows Phone. Its not perfect, wasn't designed to be. But I am looking forward to WP8 and Win8 tablets and integration across the board. Its just simple...and it just works...
@Alodar1
I like what you wrote in this thread!
I am expecting a Lumia 900 in the mail, but was surprised that WP7 does not allow WIFI to stay on after sleep. Now I am considering selling the 900 since I find myself a lot of times in areas with no reception and where WIFI is abundant (university campus).
Ringtones
Number one reason for me to jailbreak my Lumia 900 is to assign full songs as ringtones. No, please don't tell me cut & edit songs it's a chores, really. I want it just touch and pick. Yes, I am still using my HTC android phone to date and the lumia is for Tom & Jerry entertainment D). If the Lumia 900 is announced non-upgrade-able to Apollo then mine will go on craigslist. I bet many lumia 900 owners will be pissed as well.
My first smartphone ever was a WinMo and I say that I would defend Microsoft mobile platform. However, WinPhone isn't really inbetween iOS and Android in terms of functionality. iOS locks everything down along with Apple the only hardware maker. Android has flash and other goodies customizations and comes in many forms from different OEMs. WinPhone, really, is just a locked down optimized OS and different form factors! It doesn't get popular because it doesn't have goodies on both side, namely, FLASH. Form factor isn't enough to buy Android users, and locked down system won't sway iOS users either, because WinPhone comes quite late into the game. Honestly, integrating flash and allowing freedom of ringtones would make WinPhone more attractive to the average consumers (they want to visit flash videos on the go, they want to hear their custom ringtones). Bottom line is WinPhone offers nothing new, feature wise, to the mobile world... Plus, Microsoft made a very bad move with initial WinPhone release: an incomplete OS. The result was obvious that it couldn't compete with the other two established mobile platforms and lost its ground even further.
Damn, had no idea how important, full length custom ringtones were. Took me 15 minutes to make nine of them. And there are apps that will pluck clips from the Internet for you, or even do the editing part for your full length tracks. Full length ringtones are resource hogs. And have no place in WP.
Sent from my HTC Surround using Board Express
I agree with those who have issue with certain customization issues. What I want from my 900 is the ability to add whatever ringtones I want, whatever sounds for sms alerts I want and a full blown file explorer.
I don't care about locks and I don't care about paying for apps. As far as I'm concerned, someone took the time to make the app it only makes sense they get paid for it. I view apps the same way I view music. If it's a quality product I'll gladly pay for it. ...don't get me started on what I think if it's not a quality product.
All that being said I want to be able to add sounds I want to be able to add and organize my pictures (the way I want) and I want to be able to add the apps I want. (some perfectly good third party apps that aren't on the marketplace for whatever reason, I'm speaking of the batter percentage app)
All this said I love my 900 and I do hope Apollo will solve the couple of minor issues because if it does, well it will just be that much better now won't it.

And if it doesn't work for you, you should move to something that does. Its why you buy certain phones in the first place. I've never thought about WIFI.
