USB adapter connecting to digital cameras? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories

Wondering for those who have received theirs if they can confirm whether or not the USB adapter successfully allows connection from the 10.1 to a digital camera (for uploading photos).
And by the way mods, this is a specific accessory related question, not a general question, so please do not move.

Should work if the camera supports mass storage. I never use the USB cable from my Pentax K-5 so I can't tell you for sure.
Going to try a card reader tomorrow.

I am having trouble using a Canon DSLR. The camera says that it is busy (indicating that it is connected), but my GT shows no files in the usbStorage folder. USB Drives work well. I have a CF Reader that I could use if needed. The direct connection would be more convenient though.

Which Canon? I know the 7D does NOT support USB mass storage, it supports some other less-standard protocol. (Might be MTP but not sure). I know that whatever the 7D supports, it won't allow you to download RAW files without a card reader. (At least this was the case on a WinXP machine that I didn't have Administrator rights on.) Epically stupid design IMO, my experiences with a 7D at work have me pretty disappointed with it compared to my Pentaxes.
Since you mention CF I'm guessing it's a 7D.

I am using a 30D. It seems that that model does NOT support USB mass storage mode either.
I have to look for my reader to see it will work.
I guess we will have to wait for a kernel module to implement the communication protocol.

Unfortunately it's hard to find much information at all about Linux support for whatever protocol the Canons use - nearly everyone just uses card readers.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and it will connect to the camera and browse the contents.
I am not sure if that helps any. I am not sure how much work it would be to port those libraries over. I am not even sure what package it is using to create the connection. I can do some more examining to figure out what the module it is using.
EDIT:
It looks like I am using the libgphoto2-2 library to communicate with the camera. It has a few dependencies that may not be possible to port.

How to transfer pictures from camera to phone

I have a problem, that I hope someone here can help me with.
I have 2 devices, a digital camera and a phone:
- Canon Powershot G10
- HTC Touch Diamond
The Diamond is capable enough that I don't always need to take a laptop with me when I am travelling. But I still need to transfer pictures from the camera to the internet. The phone can upload to the internet if only I could get the pictures onto the phone! So I want to find a way to transfer selected pictures from the camera to the phone *without* using a computer.
As I can see it, there are several different ways to go about this, but I haven't found a solution yet:
1) Find a device similar to the iPod Camera Connector that would let me connect the camera to the phone via USB. Note that it is not enough to have a device that copies all photos. I need to select which photos will be copied. Copying 16GB of pictures onto the 4GB phone is not an option.
2) Find an SD card reader that can connect to the HTC Touch diamond directly.
3) Find a bluetooth adapter for the camera that will allow file transfers.
4) Find some way (hardware and/or software) to make the phone work like a PictBridge-compatible printer, so that I can "print" selected photos from the camera to the phone.
5) Find some software and/or hardware that will make the phone work as a USB host. If that was possible, reading SD cards is trivial.
I have searched and searched for solutions to this problem but so far without a result.
Needless to say, the solution needs to be both cheaper than a laptop and especially smaller and lighter than a laptop. Otherwise I could just bring a laptop.
I hope someone here can help me realize the full potential of my HTC Touch Diamond!
Best regards,
Mikkel
without usbHost nothing can make the usb connector in the diamond be
and activeparty
it can interduce itself to the camera as usbMasstorage but can connect itself to anything
so your camera would have to be the activepart no matter if you PictBridge, sdcardreader or iPod Camera Connector
the extUSB on your device is miniUSB input only when usbHost is not supported
plus audio out
Thank you for your reply.
As far as I know, neither the camera nor the Diamond has the capability to act as a USB host. Connecting them directly is therefore probably not an option. That is why I listed the various things that I have thought could go inbetween.
The iPod camera connector is such a device: a device that can connect 2 USB clients to each other. Unfortunately it only works on an iPod (as far as I know). I believe it may be using the USB OTG standard.
I know that a standard USB SD card reader requires a USB host to connect to. That is why I was hoping to find a non-standard SD card reader specialized for use with Windows Mobile phones or HTC phones. There is no doubt that it is possible to make such a device - I just don't know if anyone has done it. It would be useful for many purposes.
Here are some devices that come close to what I want to achieve, but not quite:
http://www.usbgo.com/
http://www.cooldrives.com/usb-otg-adapter.html
The main problem with these is that I don't see any option to select only a few photos to transfer.
So I was hoping that one of the knowledgeable people in here knew of a solution.
doubt any cable it do it as the cable it would have to init the usb connections to both devices and handle which files where to be transfered from to where
that would prob require the cable to have a screen and input option which would
pretty much make it a compuer or a pda with usbHost
my bet is that ipod have usbHost otherwise it would never work
unfortunaly the many posts in the forum about usbHost include as many hits about
usbToGo
and as much or little success
Connect a Usb host device with the camera
Hi.
Do you know how I can connect a digital camera with a device that has usb host. I own a X7501 with WM6.1. I was looking for a solution to transfer my digital photos taken in my 7 MP Sony Digital Camera to my HTC, in order to send it by mail.
Thanks for any suggestion

Also I try to connect it via the docking station that has two usb ports for the USB HOST, in these I can connect a mouse and a keyboard. Also it has an external power, but the camera did nothing at all. I try to use all the connection mode that the camara has.
Also I try that some other recomend in this thread: USB Driver for Digital Camara.

simple answer
Get a micro sd card that has an SD adapter. Plug the micro sd card into the sd adapter and plug the sd adapter into the camera. Take your pictures. When you are ready to email pictures, pull the adapter out of the camera, remove the micro sd card, and plug it into your phone. You are ready to email pictures. Keep things simple and just carry the micro sd adapter and forget all the cables and stuff. A spare card is always handy, too.

3G's USB port seems to work with everything

Hi,
In january/february, i bought a USB keyboard with an USB adaptater to use it with my tablet.
I tried to plug it in the 3G's usb port, it did'nt worked, and because last week I broken it, and I updated my tab to ICS, I tried to plug my keyboard in the 3G port, and it worked !
Maybe it's because of ICS ?
Also, my keyboard has also an usb hub, it works too !
Mine seemed to work from the the start with Rom version: 3.2.69 and that's on 2 different G9 101, however others result have varied and it seems a bit hit and miss to say exactly what's going on.
I know there are 2 different versions of the 10" G9 - A101S and A101H , I've not dug too deep into it and I'm not 100% and what the differences are.
I think ICS generally improved the Usb Host support/integration which is always welcome.
Now I just need a large bag to transfer all these extra devices for my "portable tablet".
Mine won't see USB drives/camera cards formatted to FAT32. No big deal.
Actually, it did connect with my phone and its 16GB microSD card, so I'm happily mistaken.
From the ICS "firmware" update change log:
Archos 80/101 G9
Firmware changes
Version 4.0.4 - March 8th, 2012
Initial Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 firmware release
MediaCenter Video: support for MKV3D on TV with automatic switch to best 3D mode
MediaCenter Video: allow to disable system notifications in video player
MediaCenter Video: collection of VOB files from DVD are now gathered into a single movie item
MediaCenter Music: integrate Music control panel in Lock Screen
MediaCenter info dialog: allow to edit the name used for performing the Movie and TVShow online search
File Manager: display a notification when file copy continues in background
File Manager: improved drag and drop support
File Manager: new option to prevent indexing of some storage/sdcard folders by multimedia library
Applications: more robust video conferencing support (Google talk, Skype etc.)
USB file transfer: a samba server is now activated on the tablet when using USB network tethering for easier file transfer on non Windows based hosts [Samba for "non Windows"??? Something bass-ackwards about that ...]
Archos widgets: new USB network tether widget [Anyone know if this means it will tether off a phone this way ala older Archos models like the 5 or 43 , or is this meant to "share" its internet connection (however it would obtain it, even if not "3G-enabled" - which seems useless)]
External Keyboard: french layout has been expanded to handle AtlGr keys for special symbols
Accessories: Xbox gamepad support
Maybe I shoulda hung on to the new 80 I bought a week ago, and returned after trying it out for a few days. The inability to get the back/3G USB port and MTP tools to work was a big factor in my return decision (along with no network tether option as the 5 and 43 had, and the reality check on the initial Staples web page claiming 1GB RAM - hope springs eternal...)
FWIW,
R
@rokkywoof I think that it's for the micro usb port, because this oen is meant to be an OTG micro usb port, and the original usb port is just for the 3G, but maybe they failed and applied the stuff to the 3G's port?
@Telyx/trevd wow that's strange !
I saw that the A80S (A101S) are the archos with flash memory (8 or 16gb), and the A80H/A101H are the archos with the Hard drive (H for Hard drive )

Is this true? This is the main reason why I was planning on getting this tablet this week because it is (or so I thought) that would have been able to transfer raw files from my CF cards to the internal hd, and backed up on an external HD. I shoot about 300gig a week while on the road.

It works fine... just have to turn on the "3G Stick" port, then wait a moment before plugging the camera, phone, thumb drive, card reader, etc. in. One camera connects like a thumb drive (mount the "drive" manually and open the folder in the file explorer), the other launches the Gallery app to allow me to import pictures.

3G's USB seems to work with nearly Everything
Hi @ll,
I also tried to get USB devices to work, no problem with USB-Sticks, but USB-HDD's (selfpowered) seem not to Work (neither on Stock image nor on Cyanogenmod). The HDD starts turning but Android doesn't mount it. Can someone give me some pointers?
My Specs:
Archos G9 80 Turbo HDD with an USB-HDD (USB 3.0 (should be backwards compatible)) by Toshiba
Thanks
I would bet the tablet is not able to supply enough power to actually start the USB HD up.
Remember that usb port was designed to be used with Archos' 3G cell stick and really wasn't meant to be hooked up to other things.
If the port is enabled, there is allways power for the hdd, also for a stick a mouse. But some keybords may not work (I don't figure it out).
The app USB OTG Helper will help to mount the hdd/stick.
I used a friends powered usb hub (dlink dub-h7) and was able to use both my keyboard and mouse with my tablet unfortunately my usb thumb drives dont work when attached to the usb hub however they do work when attached to the hub I didnt have my powered usb hard drive with me to test

We can connect (and use) external NFC readers to our phones through USB OTG

You can find pictures and a description of my set up here:
http://www.nfcbrief.com/2012/07/acr122-and-galaxy-nexus-connected-via.html
Basically, ACS released an application called Smart Biz Card that allows you to read and write contact NFC tags with the popular ACR122 connected via USB host. The application is only for tablets, so it will look strange on phone screens, but this can be fixed by entering tablet mode.
I'm sure many of you viewing this sub-forum also have a ACR122, so maybe this application will provide some clues as to unlocking more advanced features through external readers?

My thinking was that this sort of thing would be ideal for NFC hacking. The documentation for the ACR122 states that it can do card emulation (but everyone seems to be having trouble with it). If we could somehow get the drivers for the ACR122 working fully with Android, it would provide a good alternative to trying to access our phones' secure elements for card emulation.
This could also have some more practical uses, e.g. for event ticketing on a small scale?

I would guess they are missing the mandatory drivers to use them. Btw, are you sure they are recognized as HID? They actually should be recognized as CCID, if I remember correctly. Can you confirm they actually work?

I have no idea where I would get drivers. ACD who produce the device have only given a lava library for access which seems to use direct USB calls. And it seems to have been broken with ICS.
Tjis Android world looks quite muddy from my first experiences

There are no devices that use mass storage anymore since like 4.1.2. Everything has switched to MTP. This is everywhere on the internet and id bet on XDA.

I've found the USB Mass Storage handy for specific items and recently I was trying to recover some files (Via Android Restore program) that only worked if there was a USB Storage option, MTP wouldn't work. I have tried some apps on the app store, but none of them work to activate USB Storage. Was hoping their was a work around

Not sure how connecting a pendrive (otg or not, and btw it is very likely that the the microusb port on the pen-drive is also otg ) does not violate the above the same. When the note 8 acting as a Usb mass Storage Media is the main concern.
now back to topic,
Like it or not of companies have decided to do away with UMS. It basically boils down to architecture issues with their future plans.
UMS Gives exclusive access to the HOST (your computer or what ever you connect your device as Media to) and thus android/phone has to unmount the volume to prevent any locks or other potential issues (which are many including security).
Also the Host (your computer) has to be able to read/write the Files System format that you phone/ sd card is formatted to. (it's a dependency, because if the tablet where to use/ invent some new native file system, a lot of existing hosts might not be able to read them at all.
There are other reasons too like singular large ultra fast storage blocks to act as file systems as well RAM which can break if requiring unmounting,
Now MTP is not god send either and has it's own set of issues (read below)
however it's evolving.
with MTP most of the control is with your tablet or phone. and data is not written to the media directly by the host in for form for Blocks, but rather as files etc and thus the slowness as speed also depends a lot on your device not to mention it's biggest drawback that it's sequential/synchronous.
Personally, If i need to do large transfers etc, I just remove my microsd card in put that it into a tiny card reader, not ideal but works.
It is very unlikely that we are going to be getting UMS officially from those who are done with the standard on similar devices, . Maybe some better alternative in future than MTP, but who knows.
Here is little extract from the wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
for who care about the how's and the why's
History
The main purpose of this protocol is to allow only the transfer of media files and associated metadata to and from portable devices, one transfer function, in or out, at a time. Productivity functions such as open, edit and modify require copying to the hosting system for these functions then copied back in their entirety to change the data.
The protocol was originally implemented for use across USB but extended for use across TCP/IP and Bluetooth. Windows Vista supports MTP over TCP/IP. Windows 7 and Windows Vista with the Platform Update for Windows Vista also support MTP over Bluetooth.[7] The host connecting to an MTP device is called an MTP Initiator whereas the device itself is an MTP Responder.[8]
A main reason for using MTP rather than, for example, the USB mass-storage device class (MSC) is that the latter operates at the granularity of a mass storage device block (usually in practice, a FAT block), rather than at the logical file level. In other words, the USB mass storage class is designed to give a host computer undifferentiated access to bulk mass storage, such as compact flash, rather than to a file system, which might be safely shared with the target device (except for specific files which the host might be modifying/accessing). In practice, therefore, when a USB host computer has mounted an MSC partition, it assumes absolute control of the storage, which then may not be safely modified by the device without risk of data corruption until the host computer has severed the connection. Furthermore, because the host computer has full control over the connected storage device, there is a risk that the host computer may corrupt the file system, reformat it to a file system not supported by the USB device, or otherwise modify it in such a way that the USB device cannot completely understand it.
MTP and PTP specifically overcome this issue by making the unit of managed storage a local file rather than an entire (possibly very large) unit of mass storage at the block level. In this way, MTP works like a transactional file system - either the entire file is written/read or nothing. The storage media is not affected by failed transfers.
In case the device maintains a database/index of the content of the disk, MTP saves the cost of re-scanning the entire disk every time the content is modified.
Additionally, the MTP allows MTP Initiators to identify the specific capabilities of device(s) with respect to file formats and functionality. In particular, MTP Initiators may have to provide passwords and other information to unlock files, or otherwise enable digital rights management. Nothing specific of this nature is in the core standard but the features are available via vendor extensions. MTPZ, the Zune Extension to MTP specifically denies access to files until authentication has been processed, which is only possible using Windows Media Player 10 or higher.
Drawbacks
No multitasking - Unlike USB mass storage, MTP has been built to only allow a single function at a time, e.g. read, write, delete, with no other function available until the first function is complete.
By design, MTP devices (like PTP devices) are not treated as a traditional removable drive. The actual file system is implemented by the device, not by the computer's operating system. In theory the operating system may hide this difference, but this is not the case on Windows or Mac OS.[clarification needed] This also means that file system recovery tools on the computer will be of no use if the drive is corrupted, or crashes.
As of 2013, MTP is much less widely-supported than USB Mass Storage (see support section).
The MTP and PTP standards do not support direct modification of objects. Modified objects must be copied out of the device and reuploaded in their entirety, which can take a long time for large objects.
Google's MTP implementation in Android includes extensions to deal with this limitation.[9][10]
Windows/PC MTP implementation:
When opening a file, the user must wait till the file has copied to the PC before it can be viewed. (Note: The file remains on the PC hard drive after viewing and the device is removed)
No creation of files on the device from the PC, files must be created on the PC and copied over.
No editing of files on the device, files must be copied off the device before edits can be saved and file copied back.

As a workaround, for PC users at least, there is a Total Commander plugin which displays the MTP folders in normal file panel. It does not provide all the UMS features, like say binary directory sync (lack of which is one of my biggest griefs with MTP), but it's useful for simple file operations (browsing, copying etc.)
If anyone's interested I'll try to find the link/instructions.

And I can tell you, my brother is SERIOUSLY pissed. He's all ready to go smack around a few people at Google for this (once he's done smacking a LOT of people at Microsoft, now that his new machine is saddled with MSWin8).
In truth, it seems very arrogant on Google's part to presume that no one would want/need to use USB storage mode. My brother would like to edit files on the Note8 while it's attached to teh computer (using LibreOffice on the computer to edit it), and he feels it's absolutely preposterous that he has to copy the file down, edit it, then copy it back up. Google, 1985 wants it's broken methodology back.

DriveDroid on the play store at least.
I haven't yet had a reason to check if the Note will work, but does work on a Galaxy3 with Cyanogenmod. It goes and mangles the drivers to support the depreciated mass-storage proto. Expect it to be hit-and-miss when changing roms, requires root, requires kernel to no have completely disabled the old drivers. I now carry a recovery cdrom on my phone, it's worked most of the time.

[Q] Connect DSLR camera to Tab3 8.0

I have a Tab 3 (8.0) with android 4.2.2. Can I connect via OTG cable my Nikon D200 camera to the tablet so I can view a picture shortly after exposure. By the way, this procedure does work on my computer using Windows Explorer. I read somewhere that android 4.3 update will allow this should it ever become available. Any ideas on how I might be able to accomplish this? Thank you all.

IF you can set your camera to a mode that it looks like a storage device for your computer, then it should work fine as a storage device ONLY with the tablet and OTG. IF it needs a special driver to work on the PC, then then Android will not recognize it.

Thank you, DigitalMD,
I will have to check into that. I know when I first connected the camera to the PC it did load a driver of some description but I don't know what. Until Samsung decides to grace us all with 4.3.2, perhaps I would be better off using my 7" net book instead of the tablet. Too bad but thank you again for your rapid and helpful response.

Are you trying to achieve control or just file transfer? If you are trying to control the camera during shooting or view when in shooting mode you will need an app for Nikon control. When you connect a new device to a windows PC, it will search an online database of drivers and download a new driver if needed. Android does not work like that, for OTG there is a very limited set of devices it can recognize mainly , storage, mouse, keyboard
You might try DSLR.Dashboard or similar apps.
