Hey everyone. I'm a very active user in the fascinate community, as well as on irc.
Due to the bug issues...I accepted. Replacement dinc2! I'm very excited to join your community and break away from Samsung.
I will begin reading, as I have 5 days till fedex brings dinc.
What us tis I hear that ota gingerbread locks the phone? Where do I begin?

If it comes with the OTA GB update already you cannott software root with AlpharevX, you MUST use an XTC clip. it's been beat to death but that'd how the dice rolls, hopefully you are still on froyo so you can root, just don't accpet the OTA

Your replacement will have GB on it. I also came from the fascinate community and they over nighted me the dinc 2 and has GB Preinstallated... Brand new phone, not refurbished. With the older bootloader being exploited already and it not changing from the the upgrade to GB, I'm sure we will only need a new software exploit to update alpharevx to s-off and root.

they claim a software patch was coming this month to fix the missing call issue that they are replacing the phones because but I can't afford to miss calls. Loved my fassy but the bugs killed it.

I'm a Inc1 convert, had an insurance claim, got an Inc 2. Mine came with 2.3.3, and I was like , but this thing is NICE, so I'm now like
We'll get root soon enough. I just want AdFree, and Root Explorer (to remove the bloat)

I also loved fassy....bit bugs sucked
So how hard will it be to root and get cm7 on it?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk

ExNight, that sucks to hear that the phones are being shipped with GB. I too am coming from a Fascinate and was really hoping it would come with Froyo

Every new or refurb EVO have 2.3.3?

Well, my girlfriends EVO has been randomly shutting off, vibrating 5 times, and then flashing the led once the screen is off. From my research, it looks like anyone who has encountered this issue has had to replace it. I'm going to try a few things to fix it, but if I'm unsuccessful and need to replace it... is it guaranteed that the new or refurb will be GB? Or do we still have a slight chance of getting Froyo? She's gonna be so pissed that I won't be able to root it lol. I am praying for froyo. Anyone have any insight?

i would guess sprint would have someway to roll official os back to whatever was previously available. If i were sprint i should as hell would want something like that.
its a thought to ask a sprint rep which i am not.
Yea I was afraid of that. I'm hoping I get really lucky, or that i have some luck bribing or convincing a tech to roll it back to froyo. I know they MUST have the ability to do that.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. If it were that doable for a tech, you'd have heard about it by now.
cant you just run the RUU from froyo, then root it? thas what I did. and I just took my Evo 3D back, and had my evo replaced last week and they gave me a refurbished fone with froyo on it, but that was at best buy...
Best buy still carries evos loaded with 2.2. Got two of em week ago. Tell the tech you want to power it on yourself, then cancel update.

My wife's refurbished came S-On with Gingerbread & she hasn't shut up about it yet. Good luck!
Sent from my.....click, click, boom
There is no reasonable method to rollback to 2.2. RUU will not work. Update.zip will not work. PC36IMG.ZIP will not work. The only option at this time is a NAND pull.
WTF is nand pull??
Wow that sucks I finally got my evo to be looked at by the sprint store... I kinda just want a replacement, hopefully new, but I'll be pissed if it comes with GB. Well I'll find out if they fixed it or replaced it in about an hour so wish me luck!!
Ya I have an evo with a scratched up screen so Im debating just getting it done elsewhere since sprint wont do it now. I dont want to gamble with an insurance replacement.
I finally upgraded my fiance's crackberry to an Evo...so luckily she is still fascinated with it stock. But can't wait to root it!
Just got my replacement and yes it has 2.3 not likely that any replacement will have froyo sorry

I am curious if anyone has gotten a warranty replacement in the last week, and WHICH software was installed on it? I am banking on 2.2 still being ont here so i can S-off the phone....please let me know if you know....
thanks!
It will b 2.3.3....I'm coming from a fascinate and my dinc2 will b here Friday....expecting 2.3.3

you think they have actually taken the time to take EVERY single refurb and update them instead of just NOT doing it and having the phone force the update upon activation?

That's the point of a refurb though, to be brand new so to speak. so it will 9/10 be updated software.
I got my fascinate to inc2 switch with a refurbished on wed last week and it came with 2.2. Just a fyi.

no one can say for sure.
Mines left yesterday, should be getting it Thursday or Friday, so i hope it still have 2.2. I too think it's a roll of the dice, because they would literally have to replace ALL the phones, it would be better to just let the user update it, but we will see.
This was an issue back when I had the Eris, and I needed a refurb, and the same thing, I tried asking before they sent it out and they said that it's most likely going to be sent with the updated software, if it a refurb..
I have to ask. I see so many people on here saying they got the DInc 2 from a Fascinate (Same thing I'm doing now) so I'm sure you are all familiar with the Fascinate. How come there isnt anything like the stock ODIN files that can be used on a Fascinate?
Because Samsung and HTC have totally different ways of debugging/developing and use different tools. The Eris is the same way, with S-OFF and all that jazz with the bootloader. IMO the Odin App made recovering from meltdowns and updating things like the radio VERY easy which was nice. But for some reason this simplicity also led to MORE bricks as all it took for a while to brick your phone was to hit the dreaded phone button instead of the "PDA" button in Odin...

I already miss Odin. It was so ridiculously easy to do anything with it. You didn't even need to root to flash a custom rom. Just Odin CWM, boot directly into it, and flash the rom. And very easy to go back to stock and not leave a trace of root. Unlike the current inability to go back to S-On...

At this rate, I think most of their customers are probably rooted already. Better support here than vzw techs can ever provide!
Fact is that vzw wants to make sure their crap doesn't affect HTC's update before releasing it. As such, we all now how much crap they dump on us, so expect to wait a lot longer!

OK but I would say about 80% of people don't root. I know that is just an estimate but from experience it seems reasonable to me. So, say vzw sold 100,000 inc2s. That would be 80,000 people that might call them if the update changed something or something was broken in it. That's a lot of time for vzw service reps

I am not saying you are wrong, but my original point is that ICS is on the Incredible S, (which I think is the same phone unless someone tells me differently) and it is fine. If it was such an issue, Verizon would never release an update on any phone ever... because something can always go wrong and often does. The one way they truly know there are issues is to release an update, listen to feedback and send out bug fixes. What we "think" we know is that Verizon has had this update, since at least August if not earlier and they are sitting on it. I don't believe one bit that they are worried that this update might break something, Maybe I am a conspiracy theorist, but I think they are holding off hoping more people update to newer phones. Look at the Galaxy Nexus. JellyBean 2 or 3 months ago and Verizon just updated it about a week ago. The Galaxy Nexus is going on a year old and if they can get people to upgrade, they can also get people into this ridiculous share everything plan. I just don't think it has anything to do with them making this update perfect, because that would not follow how they have handled updates up until now...

HTC has always done from my knowledge. Oh, if you do get the OTA update, then I hope you get good coverage. Last time I did an OTA update, it took two and a half hour to download like 180 MB at full bars.

agreed, not to mention if bugs arise from the ota or post ota (that werent caught in testing or werent thought to be a big deal) then they have to potentially release more incremental updates that cost more money
i dont know exactly how the contract stuff works, but im assuming verizon paid for ics updates from htc for the tbolt and inc2 (since there are debug builds) but might be able to cut their losses by not actually releasing it...if they feel that it doesnt benefit them by releasing it
the tbolt not getting updated makes sense actually since it was released 3/11, and that puts the 20 month on contract update window for those early adopters within the next month or two
i dont see verizon doing anything to lessen the chances those users upgrade....and a new OS just might do that
inc2 was released about 6 weeks to 2 months later, but same theory applies
not to say the update still *wont* happen...but every week that its not out id say significantly drops the chances of it
now that doesnt get htc off the hook for chinese inc2 kernel source...which by my count is approaching (if not passed) their own 120 day window (which techinically by my interpretation is not legal anyway) for releasing it

actually htc has been releasing (for the first time i can remember) the ics updates for the msm7x30 phones on htc dev as RUU's rather than ota's as of late
without looking im pretty sure they did this for the desire s, rhyme, and the more recent inc s updates....they seemed to have stopped ota's through carriers for it
i guess their reasoning is something along the lines of "well the general public wont take the upgrade, so less support" and since its released through htc dev anyway i dont think they have to support it...its more like "here it is, have at it"
This will make the various ICS ROMS for DINC2 much better, since now they will be based on our phone instead of something like our phone.

Unfortunately, its buggy as hell. If it works for you, then by all means, enjoy it!!!

(FYI) Inc 4g has s-off coming

Does this really belong here? prolly not
but i know a lot of inc2 users dont want to upgrade and loose unlimited data, and buying phones off contract can be crazy expensive to keep it
inc4g can typically be had for under $250 on ebay/cl, and now we have s-off coming (which being locked was a major point for many to avoid the phone)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1944157
basically thought id throw this out there, for those looking for a pretty good (i love it, others refuse to use anything smaller than 4.3 inch screen these days) 4g phone that can be had off contract used for just about upgrade pricing, can now not worry about having an unrootable/locked phone :good:
it will most likely be getting official jellybean at some point, which the rezound probably wont (nothing against rezound, but that could be a deal breaker for some)
Awesome, the not unlockable at all part was definitely what had me staying away from this, I knew it'd get done eventually though, thanks for the heads up.

yeah ive had the inc4g since launch...i was one of the fortunate ones (maybe 80-100?) that got dev unlocked through htcdev when the phone was unoffiicially supported for its first 10 days post launch...after that htc killed support to it...
theory was either a) verizon told them to (verizon claims our stock release software and unlock would cause issues...according to some support folk) or b) verizon just didnt want it unlockable
in any event, it ll work out in the end, cuz we probably wouldnt have soff if we had dev unlock as andy might not have had to reach out to the i/o guys if we still had unlock...and soff is so much better
but our sense4.1/android 4.0.4 update this week contained the exploit the guys needed to get temproot and soff the device supposedly :good:
as for the device?
battery life is incredible for a 4g device...on the stock battery and kernel i get 4 hours screen on time regularly (more than my inc2), in lte coverage the whole time...radios are very good
comparing it to the inc2, i guess form factor differences would be iphone 4s vs iphone5...the inc4g is narrower, but qhd res....i happen to like the screen a lot (even though some blogs killed it)....its very responsive, and smooth (even more so now on sense4.1 vs 4.0)
Keep us posted on the s-off. Thanks nit.
Thanks for the info Justin.

If anyone cares for another opinion, I can pretty much confirm Justin's take on the Dinc4. I had the Dinc2 for quite a while and absolutely loved it (now my dad loves it.) I was predisposed to the Dinc4 because the form factor of the Dinc2 was perfect. Once I noticed Justin had the phone and knew it would have great ROMs, that sealed the deal. My phone arrived THE DAY HTC removed it from their unlock tool :'(
So after 3 months with the Dinc4, I'm a little baffled by the amount of negative reviews on this phone. The screen is fantastic, the camera is outstanding, and the phone (stock) is smooth and responsive. The latest update made it even better. Battery life is great. If you like your Dinc2 as much as I did and aren't looking for a phablet size device, I think this is a great upgrade.
Cheers.
+1 I just got mine and I love it. Except for the lack of root, but like nits said that will be available in the near future. The form of the phone reminds me of the og inc and I loved that lil guy
if root ever becomes available for it, i might look around to trade my dinc2 + some cash maybe, for one. dinc2 is my first Android based phone and I really love it. I even liked it on stock, but root is just amazing lol
We're told root is coming soon
Once the s-off tool is released, i'm sure root will accompany root.

yeah, just fastboot a recovery and flash a superuser package and youre set (post s-off)
I think just maybe HTC threw the dinc4g a bone. They have supported the android underground in the past. They still would if very greedy wireless hadn't stepped in.
It makes sense to me, that they released an update knowing full well that we could exploit it.
Anyone else think the same?

I'll second that
If our phones were 4g I could care less about upgrading to the dinc4g because the dinc2 is an amazing phone :X
