[Q] International SIM Card - Unlocking - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings Fellow XDA Friends,
I have a family plan with my girlfriend we both have G2's running latest CM7Nightly and we use a 3rd MT4G running RoyalGinger 3.0.
I have called tmobile and had them "unlock" them for international calls as well will be going to the Europe this Fall in October.
They emailed us an unlock code.
Question 1. Do I need to purchase an intl sim card insert it then use the code they gave me before unlocking?
Question 2. Can I unlock them before going overseas and then replace my U.S. SIM card and continue to use this?

If you rooted your phone with gfree its already unlocked...

Sorry still learning,
Sorry for the ignorance. Just learning as fast as I can, If I rooted all 3 phones with visionary then they won't be unlocked?

My understanding and explanation would go like this.
Using the unlock code simply allows the phone to be used internationally with another carrier's SIM. Applying the unlock code simply opens up the functionality to read another SIM card.
Apply the unlock code, and you can put in any SIM card from a carrier that runs on the same frequencies as your phone. Put a T-mobile SIM card back in and the phone will work as it does now.

What he said is correct, and you'll only need to enter the code after inserting a different SIM card into your phone. When you get home, plug back in your other card and you're still good to go. (Or now you could go and switch carriers without breaking or signing contracts )

Or just unlock with gfree and never have to enter a code...

Visionary only gives you root, not S-Off. If you are on CM7, then you must have S-Off (in order to be able to flash any custom ROMs). Do you remember how you got S-Off? You probably did Visionary than gfree, and just don't remember doing gfree. Did you use ADB, and enter any terminal/command lines on your desktop computer? If so, you probably did gfree.
If you did gfree, then you have Subsidy Unlock, which means your phone is SIM-unlocked. Nothing else to do, just slip the new SIM into your phone and use it.
Some people have had an issue, where applying the T-Mobile SIM unlock code renders their phone unable to read any SIM. So I would stay away from the code, and do gfree, if you have not already.

Has anyone used Rebtel? http://gigaom.com/mobile/free-international-calls-android-rebtel/ My gf and I are moving to the UK
I am wondering should I just cancel my tmobile account? Is there a way out of the contract? What do I do?

Just making sure - root and unlocking without SIM card

I'm purchasing a Desire Z on Friday and for some reason I started thinking about whether I need a SIM card in the phone or not to root + SIM unlock it. My carrier is Rogers and the phone will be from Bell, for which I have no active SIM card.
I'll be fine for doing everything necessary to get it to work with my Rogers SIM without one actually in it, right?
Lol
You cannot use that phone on rogers without sim unlock

That's what I'm saying, I'm going to unlock the phone. I just wanted to make sure I can do it without a SIM card IN the phone because the only active one I have is the one I need to unlock the phone to use.
To unlock it put in your rogers sim it'll ask you for the unlock code. If entered correctly you can use it with your rogers sim

Pretty sure you can unlock it without a SIM in. There is another recent thread from a guy using a G2 in the UK on O2, and it wouldn't pick up a signal until he ran gfree on it to unlock it properly.

[Q] How to unlock a Desire from Softbank?

Hi, I am a newbie here!
I have a Desire from Softbank (Japanese carrier) which I would like to use with other SIM cards. But when I put another SIM card inside, I can not enter any unlock code.
Does anybody have an idea for this? I am willing to do whatever from soldering, over rooting to saying words like "open sesame"
Holy crap! I just did that two nights ago.
Basically, the stock Softbank branded ROM on there is locked to a Softbank usim and there's no way around it with the stock ROM.
To get your phone on another carrier you need to:
0. Flashing your phone will remove all the data on your phone so backup all your stuff to your computer. Use the trial of MyBackup.
1. Make yourself a goldcard (Millions of tutorials all over the place so look one up). Make sure you have a backup of all the stuff from your SD and phone.
2. Go here and get yourself the latest World Wide English (WWE) RRU to flash your ROM to the latest stock HTC one. This will "de-brand" your phone. I used
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
3. With USB Debugging enabled on your phone and your goldcard inserted, run that updater in windows. It should complete, rebooting your phone a few times. Your phone will show the htc logo instead of the Softbank one while booting now.
4. Now your phone isn't locked to the Softbank usim but it is still locked to the Softbank carrier. So you need to go buy an unlock code somewhere online (I got one for $13, just google "HTC Desire Unlock Code").
5. Reboot your phone with the sim you want to use inserted. When you slide to unlock your phone, it'll ask you for an unlock code. Put that code you bought in for both codes it requests.
6. Restore your backups
7. Enjoy your desire on whatever carrier you want.
My experience is that it works great on at&t in the US but is limited to Edge speed for internet.
On a side note, I'm using Simeji for my Japanese Input Method
I'd simply use HTC Desire Sim unlock utility..

[Q] Canadian Virgin WFS

Anyone unlock one of these? I seem to remember reading somewhere a few months back Bell (who now owns virgin) saying they will never unlock it.
However I see that there are "WWE" branded unlocks for my version, wtf?
Here is the url of the exact phone I have - http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/phones/phone-details.html?model=HTCWILD&colour=White
Please no "I unlocked my DerpCellular wfs, you can too!!" stupidity that most of these threads digress into, either you have the exact phone or not. Anyone who lives in Canada and deals with Bell will understand why this needs to be asked
Hey, another virgin canada user.
i have that exact phone (same colour too) with virgin. Mine unlocked just fine via the htcdev unlock. You just need to select the "Bell Mobility WWE" RUU when unlocking it.
unlocked and rooted. bye bye useless bell apps.
be sure to notice that the unlock does a factory reset. back your stuff (contacts!) up before you start on it.
So when you say unlocked using the DEV tool, does that mean its network and sim unlocked? Also just curious, I have a Bell SIM card, can I use this in this phone without unlocking the network/sim?

nope, the htcdev bit only unlocks the bootloader. the sim lock and all the other bits of s-on remain in place. you'll need an xtc clip or an unlock code if you want the ditch the network shackles.
as for the virgin->bell, no idea. there seems to be conflicting information on whether bell/virgin sims are interchangeable or not. some people report it works, other report it doesn't.

Excellent, I was NOT expecting to be able to do this.
And now for a stupid question, what is a good way to back everything up for a quick reinstall?
AFAIK, There isn't one really, other than exporting your contacts and writing down all your apps names, as all the real useful backup methods require root.
OTOH, unless you like customizing extensively, it should only take a day or two to get things back to normal.

Foreign SIM doesn't prompt for unlock code -- how to unlock?

I have a SaskTel Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747M, baseband version I747MVLLE8) that is locked, and I want to unlock it. But when I insert a foreign SIM (from AT&T) I get no prompt for an unlock code. Instead it just says "No SIM card. Emergency calls only." I've contacted several of the online unlock code suppliers and they say without this prompt I can't unlock the phone. I've also tried to enter variations of the *7465625* code, but they do nothing at all. SaskTel says they don't provide unlock code. This despite the fact that I purchased the phone outright, and have no contract with them. Am I totally hooped, or is there some way I can get this phone unlocked?

try another SIM, maybe the one you're using is borked.
Try this

I've already tried that, the phone doesn't respond to this keystroke sequence.

Possible, but I doubt it, since it works just fine in another phone. In any case I don't have another one to try.
Misread
#7465625*638*UNLOCKCODE#
I noticed in an earlier post, the place of the unlock code was after the #, it should be before. On the right track though. Probably just a typo.
unless you already tried that.

That and probably every variation of it I can think of! I am wondering though, is this code internal only to the phone, or does it go to the cellular network? When I do type it, it does nothing, though if I send it I get an "Invalid USSD" message returned from the network.

this code doesn't work on the LTE variants of the SGS3. most of the multi-stage codes (####*###) don't work, you just end up with an error.
Correct as stated. Additionally, if you have a foreign micro sim, and you are not on a stock ROM, the unlock screen prompt will not show. I was running AOKP, and could not get the prompt to show, so I flashed back to stock, unlocked phone, then flashed back to AOKP, bc TW sucks!

This is what I was starting to suspect. Can you refer me to a good, really clear step by step procedure to do this? I've never done this with a phone, and since I live in a small town, I doubt I can find anyone to help me here. So a step by step would be nice. Thanks.

are you on a stock ROM?
i have a i747M and unlocked it with the at&t micro sim, so i know it works,
did u cut ur at&t sim down to size ? maybe u did it wrong and it wont recognize, or ur sim slot is ****ed up ....
ur best bet right now is to try another micro sim
Ok, I've now got my phone rooted. Can someone suggest how I can get the ROM set so that it will allow me to enter the unlock code when I insert a foreign SIM.
There's a 3rd potential method that hasn't been mentioned on here that we see working for most Samsung handsets. In fact, for some Samsung handsets (usually older ones) it is the only unlocking method that will work.
It is:
1. Turn on the phone with a non accepted or accepted SIM card inserted
2. Type #0111*CODE# replacing CODE with your network unlock code
However, if your service provider lock is active, then you'll need to use the code #0133*CODE# instead.
All unlocking methods (once you have the unlock code) are available here: http://www.mobileunlocked.co.uk/samsung-instructions.asp
Hope that helps.
Did you manage to unlock?
I'm facing the exact same issue. My S3 doesn't show the network unlock prompt when I insert a foreign SIM. Mine is locked to AT&T. It's also SGH-I747 model
You could try and unlock your phone as per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033225
Then try the SIM card after the phone is unlocked.
Oh, I believe this only works on Stock ROMS.

Follow the link Tybalt quoted, you will unlock your phone and the sim won't ask for an unlock code because well, it's unlocked.... Follow the instructions, you need to be on JB 4.11 for this to work, some have had success on custom roms but not many....you don't need to root to do this and make sure when you see the success code you have 40 at the end not 30... i did this a couple times... 30 I think basically means you have locked it again ... and in the instructions when it says wait 30 or 60 seconds... you really do have to wait.. don't be impatient....it's a huge thread with many many successes.....
Samsung Galaxy S3
I have the same issue but I have a sgh-i747 Samsung galaxy S3 i brought it to koodo and was told it was a compatible phone with the company when unlocked. The problem/question i have is When i insert my new simcard the screen will not display any prompt to input a unlock code. It just says emergency calls only or unregistered sim. I inserted my sim card into another s3 same model, software versions, different provider, and the phone asked for the unlock code right when powered on. So i tried and flashed a new firmware but its doing the same thing.
I called koodo and they gave me instructions to create a new apn of Koodo SP it did not make my phone prompt me for an unlock code.
When i send an email to any website about unlocking my phone they advice me not to purchase there product if my phones not prompting me for a unlock code that will it more then likely not work.
I've seen methods online of using these to input an unlock code "#0111*UNLOCKCODE#" or "#7465625*638*UNLOCKCODE#" but when i tell the unlock website this information this still tell me not to purchase there product and i mean many numerous websites. I do not want to buy an unlock code only to try to input it with these methods and have it not work. Which i highly dought it would because the normal 7465625 command doesnt work either.
I also tried this factory unlock and it did nothing
PLEASE HELP!?!?

Thank you so much for this!
Whenever I typed any variation of the #7465625 code I would get the "emergency calls only" message. #0111*CODE# did the trick!
The provider didn't even know this, the best they could come up with after numerous calls to their hotline is that the phone was broken and/or that the SIM card was badly inserted, thus I should mail them the phone to the other side of the country for unlocking. Would they even have known how to do it over there?
My grandma says thanks!

SimUnlock

Hi all, I recently bought a new htc one m8 on vodafone ireland. I'm on a different provider so i bought an unlock code on line and it didn't work i got (incorrect password). I haven't registered the phone on any network as of yet (its brand new). My question is, Do i need to activate the phone on vodafone first, Then put in a working foreign sim to unlock with code i received from online provider?
Generally speaking, no, you don't. If it came from them, then it's already locked to them by default. You just need to enter the proper unlock code with the new sim. Another option to consider is that pretty much all M8s can be made s-off now(albeit for a small fee for the app that does it). Once you're s-off, you can just sim unlock it yourself without the need to purchase any codes. That's what I did. The instructions are here in the forums.

Thanks, Thats what i thought. The provider i bought the unlock code from told me to activate the phone on vodafone, Then put in a foreign active sim and it should work. But i put the code in incorrect 4 times, twice cause i thought i put it in incorrect and another 2 times to record it(take pictures to get a refund for wrong code). Do you know how many times you can enter the incorrect code before blocking the phone?
To be honest, I'm not really sure...I want to say about 5-10 depending on your device, but again, I'm not really sure.

If you go with SunShine to S-Off you don't need to unlock using HTCDev, as the latest version of SunShine performs the unlock as well as the S-Off without HTC knowing and without loosing APPs in /data such as calculator and flashlight.
