[Q] Cracked screen on my brother's AMOLED Desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

G'day all
My brother's HTC Desire (AMOLED version) kind of had a misadventure and now the touch panel is cracked. Does the whole screen assembly (digitiser and AMOLED panel) have to be replaced (like the iPhone 4), or can just the digitiser be replaced?
How easy is it to replace it?

got any pics, so we can see how damaged it is

you basically have to take apart the ENTIRE phone to get to the front. It ain't worth it.

Yeah you do have to take most of the phone apart to get to the digitizer but it's really not that hard. I did it on mine about 6 months ago.
There is a really good video on youtube that shows you ever step of the way and if you buy a digitizer already stuck to the front case part (rather than just the glass) then it's even easier (that's what I did).
Here's the link - have a look and see if you would be comfortable doing it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXZqIjtFoAU
Took me about half an hour all up but that's because i was taking my time to try and be careful. If you do end up doing it I can help you with who suplied my part (around AU$70) and some tips to watch out for..
Tas..
ps. that's of course if the AMOLED screen is still ok ? just a cracked digitizer/glass ?

I cracked the front of mine 2 days after I got it
Ordered a replacement digitizer of ebay and changed it out in about 20 mins using thye already mentioned youtube video.
Separating the digitizer glass from the case is really easy just blast it with a hair drier and it comes apart with no problems.
if only the digitizer is cracked then that's all you need to replace but if the crack is in the amoled as well then obviously it's both but it is not more work since you have to pull the amoled to get to the digitizer anyway

Question about replacing cacked screen

Hey guys, i read through a couple of threads about cacked screens but im still a little confused. i droped my phone and the bottom half of the screen cracked, i can still use the phone without any problems. so do i need a digitizer or new lcd??
digitizer is the glass part that you touch, lcd is the screen itself. If you can see a full picture, then the lcd is fine.

Ok thanks, my phone is still in perfect working condition. just the glass is all cacked up, so now i need to find a cheap digitizer..
Ebay
Sent from my EVO
My friend found one off amazon for like $13-15 I can't remember. I looked it up too and it was about the same. He didn't have any issues replacing the glass either. If you have the insurance you might try a sprint store, or a authorized sprint store. I bought a Epic fro ma coworker and it had a cracked screen, took it to the repair place and they did it for free. (after making the phone my wifes main phone)

HTC One X fell...

I need an advice, my phone just fell out of my palm and it's screen is completely shattered. The touch screen is fully functional but the screen shows orange-ish dots. Is the the LCD or the broken glass just presses it?
Screen repair here costs ~500 bucks, which I ofcourse refuse to pay.
TL;DR:
What should I order to fix it myself , and is it worth it?
(LCD + touch screen? )
Also, if I order the OEM one.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-OE...872?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f1ae6a558
will it be the original LCD2 the HOX has?

ยท 110% Brand New (In the ebay advert)! THAT MADE ME CHUCKLE !!
I would ask the ebayer, not us about the LCD2 screen
And if I was you, I wouldn't even bother going anywhere near repairing it yourself, unless you have experience. They are so complex its unreal.
Good luck !
Another question, when my iPod touch cracked I tried to replace the glass... it didn't turn out well. I only ordered the digitizer , at the end it was attached to the LCD.
Anyone knows if it's the same with the HOX? Really can't afford a 500$ repair now.

yeah they are attached normally, hox, the glass is attached to the screen.
my dhd when smashed, was declared beyond economical repair.
its only really if the screen isn't smashed too badly that you might be able to warm it up enough to loosen the glue, but you'll probably damage the lcd itself in the process. and then you'll probably bugger up re attaching the new glass. even htc buggered it up with the yellow spots etc on lots of the early models
you're better off getting the whole screen with glass. it will be fiddly, but there are a few teardown guides for hox, and if you research this enough, and make sure you have the right tools for the job, it should be fine.
if i was in your situation, i would try it .. but i would make a million % sure that the screen i was buying was a genuine screen.

[Q] Huge crack across screen!Need some advice.

Dropped my phone on asphalt today and got a big hairline crack across the screen . (Attached pics)
It really hurts cause i always baby this phone and just the rush to get to work and in my car, completely missed my pocket.
The screen is still responsive to touch and seems to be working normal thank god the lcd screen wasnt damaged and the digitizer didn't shatter.
Got a few questions t
1) just wanted to clarify that the digitizer lies ontop the LCD screen?
2) and that is all that needs replacing?(from damage seen in the pics)
3) also mine is branded just HTC(no carrier, so it's international GSM version?)
4) would it matter if i bought a replacement digitizer meant for the at&t version or not?
5) should be getting a one x that had some water damage and is no longer working. would the digitizer from this phone be a viable option for me to use as a replacement or should i just order the part online.( I really want it replaced fast and if i have to order the replacement it will take about a week to 2 weeks to arrive in my country
so apparently i can't attach any urls until i make 10 posts or i'd show u guys the part i wanted to order but its basically just a screen digitizer from ebay with tools needed for about $17.86.(is that cheap, good or expensive price considering the item + tools)
can you guys please search for it on ebay?the title of the post/part is Touch Screen Digitizer Glass Lens Replacement For HTC One X S720 + Free Tools
the link above is the item i'm looking to order for replacement. is it the right part i'm looking at?and would that be all i need or is there anything else i should add?also quality wise would it be top pick or are there any better options available?
Attached some pics also.Advice would be greatly appreciated.
You are unlikely to be able to separate the digitizer and lcd without damaging the LCD.
A water damaged phone may have a water damaged screen.
Search one of the other broken screen threads for more information.
I've replaced several screens on captivate.easiest way is get replacement(LCD+digetizer) from ebay,Google procedure.watch or read as many times as needed to feel confident to take apart phone.the hardest part is seperating LCD from phone(they use adhesive to secure LCD to phone).I used razor to carefully cut adhesive.
Most components are plug&play.just follow guide completely,u should be fine.
My LCD was $85 on ebay.good luck.

[Q] Screen replacement

Hello All,
Just recently dropped my screen for AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The phone still works but has cracks everyone. I was wondering if anyone has attempted to change just the screen itself, if so, where did you buy the screen from and what tools did you use? Also, what is the metal frame around the phone called and is it possible to get it replaced? Thank you and have a nice day!

If you are talking about the glass then I just replaced mine about a week ago. I actually ordered a replacement in white instead of the grey that I have. I used a hair dryer, hobby knife kit (only to start the edges), and the tools that came with the glass. It cost about $30 and an hour of your time. The only problem I had was getting the glass to stick with the old tape. A good reference are the videos for replacing the Galaxy S3 glass.
Do not push to hard when putting the new screen in place, you will break the digitizer if you do. I did find that if you have a completely broken screen and its showing black, the s-pen seems to still work fine and can make the phone function. I am assuming that the 11pin port will also push video to a tv with the screen broken and the phone can be used that way also if needed (will test and let you know).

How hard was it to do a replacement on the screen glass itself? and is it easy to do a bezel replacement?

You replaced the glass for the Note 2? Yes I am just talking about the glass itself. Do you have a link to where you bought the item and any link to videos you used to assist you in replacing the glass? Thank you so much for all your help!

I purchased the glass off of ebay, I cant post a link due to not having enough post here, but just search "galaxy note 2 replacement glass"
I looked at a bunch of Galaxy S3 glass replacement videos. just search "s3 glass replacement" on youtube.
It is time consuming, I used a hair dryer to be safe because heat guns get too hot if not careful.
I did get a chance to test if the 11pin still pushed video to a tv with a broken screen (using an MHL adapter). It did not for me. I plugged a phone in with a broken digitizer that the s pen still worked on and would let me make calls from. The phone is still function able, just no picture on the screen (working in the dark with the s-pen). Nothing showed up on the tv screen. I plugged another note 2 in to verify and the other note 2 pushed video just fine.
What's the easiest way to tell if I just need to replace the glass versus the entire digitizer?
Glass replacement
Ok for every thread on the internet the digitizer is NOT part of the glass. The glass is just that......glass. Stop calling it a digitizer these are not iPhones!!!!!! The digitizer is laid on top of the amoled and has a connector that runs under the display and plugs in there with a flip type switch connector. The glass can be removed with heat approx. 160 deg with a heat gun on low and keeping track of the temp with a infrared thermo. I've done this a few times now be careful with white as these tend to break easier than the grey not sure why laminate must be weaker. Takes 45mins to do. You can buy the glass for approx. $25 shipped be careful near the bottom with the button flex they are glued on. You must reuse your speaker trim and button trim also. I have only 1 single question can you buy a replacement digitizer by itself without having to buy the amoled? Anyone know and how much they are please point me to one for the i317m.
Why the are you answering a 3 month old thread?
Op says he dropped his screen...lol

Cracked Screen Repair

Hey guys, good day.
My HTC Desire Eye screen cracked (I accidentally dropped it) and it really looks horrible. I am planning to replace the screen myself, and I am asking if anyone repaired their phone by themselves as well. I'll be buying the parts needed in eBay. I am also wondering if I can only replace the glass and not with the LCD? The LCD screen still looks impeccable despite the cracked glass and touch works perfectly. However, I am yet to find a tutorial that shows replacement of the glass module only.
Thank you very much in advance.

U can find tutorial on YouTube. And yes you have to replace entire screen not just the glass.
My advice is get it replaced from a expert. It doesn't cost much. Also buy original screen don't get a bad one.
