Question about replacing cacked screen - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, i read through a couple of threads about cacked screens but im still a little confused. i droped my phone and the bottom half of the screen cracked, i can still use the phone without any problems. so do i need a digitizer or new lcd??

digitizer is the glass part that you touch, lcd is the screen itself. If you can see a full picture, then the lcd is fine.

Ok thanks, my phone is still in perfect working condition. just the glass is all cacked up, so now i need to find a cheap digitizer..

Ebay
Sent from my EVO

My friend found one off amazon for like $13-15 I can't remember. I looked it up too and it was about the same. He didn't have any issues replacing the glass either. If you have the insurance you might try a sprint store, or a authorized sprint store. I bought a Epic fro ma coworker and it had a cracked screen, took it to the repair place and they did it for free. (after making the phone my wifes main phone)

[Q] Broken Screen

I recently replaced just the broken glass screen on my evo. When I turned it on now, the screen is all black now. I hear it still working, I hear SMS and phone calls, but cant see anything. I didnt replace the entire LCD just the clear part. When I was prying the clear screen off, it was sticking to the lcd, which also was cracked. So I got the screen off but the other part came with it. I dont know if it was connected to the LCD and it was broken off or if its ok seperated. Its just the dark looks like tinted glass that goes directly over the LCD and under the clear screen (digitizer). So, can anyone tell me if maybe I damaged the LCD screen.
Thanks in advance.
So before replacing the glass/digitizer, the lcd still worked fine? Based on your description it sounds like the lcd. You may just have a loose ribbon connection...have you tried redoing the ribbons?
I'm about to dive into the same mission. Thinking twice about it now.....
Yes the glass was broken for about 1 month but it still worked fine the LCD was working. I've tried reconnecting the ribbons various times also tried connecting the old glass digitizer, but still the same result. I'm not sure if that tinted screen was part of the LCD and is now broken or if I somehow damaged something else when I was connecting it.

to tell the truth changing just the glass is definitely the cheapest route, but from what I've read is more difficult than buying the whole replacement LCD. I paid $25 on eBay but the whole LCD is closer to like $75.

So you mean it is easier to purchase a digitizer and LCD that still connected as one piece (http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Sprint-HTC-Evo-4G-LCD-p/htc736815.htm) as opposed to doing the digitizer or LCD individually? If I went that route I would just pay a 3rd party cell phone repair shop to do the work for 100 bucks...then you can hold someone else accountable.
I found the LCD here for cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250782149841&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Supposed to arrive tomorrow so I will find out if the lcd is indeed the problem
thanks for that link, I may have to try that.

[Q] Good place to go if broken screen?

I've searched around a bit, anyone got some good recommendations for buying a replacement screen and a guide on how to do it?
Is this all you need for a cracked screen?

That's the digitizer only (the glass on top of your screen), if that is what you need then this should help:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC-Evo-4G-Teardown/2979/1
I found it really hard to remove, even after heating the glue holding the digitizer down, I replaced mine with a full housing with screen and digitizer already assembled. It's more expensive but much easier.
Or you could go to your local Sprint Repair Center and see what they can do for you.

If the screen still works but the grass is cracked then what do I need? What is the digitizer?

Look at the link I gave with the the tear down. That should explain it.
ETA: Basically, there is an LCD screen that displays the graphics, and overlaid on top of it is the digitizer that lets you interact with the LCD screen.
If you have insurance just take it to sprint and they will replace it for freeeee! If you don't sorry for taking up space.

No insurance!
insurance or not they could fix it for about $80, get your own digitizer and they might do it for labor only.
if a sprint store wont do it those other "cellphone" stores usually can but youre looking at $150-200
i bought 2 digitizers for $45 (1 wide cable 1 small cable) at a sprint store they changed it for me and took the other digitizer as payment.

Sprint store fixed mine for $35, no insurance. I was also rooted and they were like, we arent supposed to work on it if its rooted, so next time bring it in not rooted.
In addition, they replaced the whole front of my phone. Light leakage I had from below the buttons? Gone. Volume rocker a little creaky? Gone. Power button wear on the graphic? Gone. Small signs of wear on the side of the bezel? Gone. Hotspot on my LCD? Gone. It was worth the $35 for all that jazz, not to mention fixing my glass.
The replacement front they put on had a bad ear speaker, so I brought it back the next day, stock as can be. And they fixed that for free.
10 min later I was re-rooted and nandroid-backed-up back and rolling.
Definitely check with a sprint store first. I actually had to talk to two different people at different times to get them to admit that they could look at it (possibly first one was uninformed? Not sure).
I've taken my evo apart before. Removing the glass is a pain in the ass. I don't recommend it.
What you need is to just replace the LCD. It comes as a unit. If you look at your Evo, you will see a line completely around the sides. Dividing the "top" and "bottom". Popping off the battery cover and a few screws in the back and you will have the whole screen off in a minute. I personally haven't checked for replacement parts or the price of this LCD unit.
But IMO this will be the easiest and quickest way for you to do it.
Awesome, thanks a ton! It's for my brother. I will relay the message and post back with results.

[Q] Cracked screen on my brother's AMOLED Desire

G'day all
My brother's HTC Desire (AMOLED version) kind of had a misadventure and now the touch panel is cracked. Does the whole screen assembly (digitiser and AMOLED panel) have to be replaced (like the iPhone 4), or can just the digitiser be replaced?
How easy is it to replace it?
got any pics, so we can see how damaged it is

you basically have to take apart the ENTIRE phone to get to the front. It ain't worth it.
Yeah you do have to take most of the phone apart to get to the digitizer but it's really not that hard. I did it on mine about 6 months ago.
There is a really good video on youtube that shows you ever step of the way and if you buy a digitizer already stuck to the front case part (rather than just the glass) then it's even easier (that's what I did).
Here's the link - have a look and see if you would be comfortable doing it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXZqIjtFoAU
Took me about half an hour all up but that's because i was taking my time to try and be careful. If you do end up doing it I can help you with who suplied my part (around AU$70) and some tips to watch out for..
Tas..
ps. that's of course if the AMOLED screen is still ok ? just a cracked digitizer/glass ?
I cracked the front of mine 2 days after I got it
Ordered a replacement digitizer of ebay and changed it out in about 20 mins using thye already mentioned youtube video.
Separating the digitizer glass from the case is really easy just blast it with a hair drier and it comes apart with no problems.
if only the digitizer is cracked then that's all you need to replace but if the crack is in the amoled as well then obviously it's both but it is not more work since you have to pull the amoled to get to the digitizer anyway

[Q] Cracked screen

Hey guys, today I dropped my Desire HD and the screen cracked. The touchscreen works fine, so my guess is that the LCD is not affected, only that glass ontop of it. Is there any way I can change it without replacing the whole LCD screen?

If it's just the glass that's cracked and everything else is fine (No visible cracks/defects in the LCD itself) then you just need to get a new Digitizer. This is the glass panel on top of the LCD that picks up the touch input.
You can pick them up for pretty cheap on ebay, postage will depend on where you live. In my case I can get one for €18 from an English seller including postage to Ireland so should be similarly priced for wherever you live. Cracked Screen Repair

Hey guys, good day.
My HTC Desire Eye screen cracked (I accidentally dropped it) and it really looks horrible. I am planning to replace the screen myself, and I am asking if anyone repaired their phone by themselves as well. I'll be buying the parts needed in eBay. I am also wondering if I can only replace the glass and not with the LCD? The LCD screen still looks impeccable despite the cracked glass and touch works perfectly. However, I am yet to find a tutorial that shows replacement of the glass module only.
Thank you very much in advance.

U can find tutorial on YouTube. And yes you have to replace entire screen not just the glass.
My advice is get it replaced from a expert. It doesn't cost much. Also buy original screen don't get a bad one.
