Open the zip, read META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script, and look what it does..it only add some files to ur system (it even remove it first, in case u already have an older version of those files)

Thanks mate.

Worked fine for me (HTC Desire) - painless in fact .... just as well, as unrevoked3 didn't
Took a few minutes to get S-OFF and CWM, then from there just a simple flash of the Superuser zip file.
Thanks

Which is the best method of rooting?
alpha-rev or unrevoked??

AlpharRev does not give you root. It gives you S-OFF. To get root, you need to use unrevoked (or Revolutionary + flashing superuser.zip afterwards).
Sent from Sandvold's ICS using Transparent XDA App

AlhpaRev and Unrevoked3 do not work on this HBOOT (HBOOT 1.02.0001). At least never worked on mine. Plus, there are much more steps to s-off the phone and root it using the older way (Alpharev and Unrevoked3).
For our HBOOT 1.02.0001 Revolutionary is really a bless. It worked perfect on mine and that only with few clicks (of course, provide PROPER information on the site to get a key). Getting SU access after installing the latest SU from recovery was piece of cake of course.
I got 3.0.7 (from the upper link of course, just delete the file so you can go to the upper directory to get a list of all SU versions).
I cannot say about older HBOOT or newer, but this Revolutionary tool is really the easiest and most simple way to S-Off your phone and get recovery, and from there to install SU is just few steps away (put the downloaded .zip file to SDcard and install from there ... cannot be easier).

Revolutionary
Tried with my HTC Desire, but aftre step 4 I am getting the message "waiting for device" and unable to proceed. Please help!

It's not a crap hboot. The utility didn't work because the drivers weren't installed properly.

Firstly, I'd recommend using unrevoked to root the phone. The way you are using is old and complicated.
Secondly, i imagine that your hboot is not 0.8 which means you'll need to downgrade.
It might be http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750852 that you need to read and follow, although I'm not sure.
It would help if you knew what hboot you were.

This is crap
The RUU itself can't put into bootloader?
If you want to try unrevoked, this is the post you need:
Q. My screen goes blank when I use custom recovery with unrevoked3.
A. You have an SLCD display and will need to use an updated recovery image until unrevoked3 itself is updated. It is safe to use this updated image on AMOLED screens too. You can download the image here: http://crop.floodbit.org/~defer/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd.img
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749551 - has everything about slcd rtc
The main problem is my screen is black and I cant see anything although windows is still detecting device
Instead of the RUU, try giving unrevoked a whirl with that custom recovery image (make sure phone is unplugged whilst started unrevoked). Also, follow the instructions from unrevoked about installing the htc drivers (unless you have already installed the latest htc drivers).
Battery pull, then turn on whilst holding volume down. Hopefully this will give you bootloader and unrevoked should be able to do its magic (if you select that custom recovery image)
This will give you root.

1. Choose desire then download.
2. Follow instructions in hboot driver.html (to make sure your phone is recognised correctly)
3. Run reflash.exe
4. File>Custom Recovery (Ctrl+R)
5. Download and select http://crop.floodbit.org/~defer/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd.img
6. Plug in desire - hopefully you have USB debugging enabled. If not, I think you can achieve root by loading bootloader yourself (battery pull device and then vol down + power)

I done everything but still dont understand what to do with this recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd.img
the drivers were installed correctly and my computer can see my device,
But still no luck I think I'm missing something I cant see anything on my screen, I know the device alive as I can hear the atrt up sound and compuer now detect in device manager
This is what hapens when I try to attempt flashing with official ruu
Ok unplug the desire from the pc then battery pull and then hold volume-down (on left hand side of the phone) and then press power (whilst holding volume-down). Then plug in and run the RUU again.
With that recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd.img, you select it in unrevoked by pressing ctrl + r (on windows) and then just connect your desire.
Do the RUU first

Hey,
I've tried to root my Desire by I get stuck at the "Backup CID missing" error. I did google about and couldn't find much and some said that the error appears when I need a gold card. Thing is my Desire is a factory unlocked piece and last time round I never used a gold card.

I had this problem initially on my SLCD desire 0.93 hboot.
The reason is that it need a custom root file to loaded through unlocker. This is available through XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9245153]
recovery-RA-desire-v1.7.0.1-R5.1-0.93.rar
after this it rooted perfectly
regards
Go through this process if all else fails for you.
1. Make a goldcard (google it so you dont have to mess with hex anymore).
2. If your phone isnt branded download the latest ruu (or earlier if you want a lower hboot, but that doesn't matter anymore).
2a. If your phone is branded, find the ruu for your carrier.
3. Optional - if you are rooted, then nandroid, if not, back up apps etc if you want them.
4. Install HTC Sync (for drivers).
5. Put your phone in to fastboot (power + back button).
6. Connect USB and run ruu.
7. Once all that's done, select usb debugging and run unrevoked.
Worked for my messed up Desire!
- If step 6 is giving you hassle, go to device manager, find android and select drivers from a list, there should only be one or two extra.

连接手机和电脑,打开CMD(开始->运行->输入CMD,回车)
这里我一不小心,用了cygwin,所以显示上和你的会不太一样,没影响,仅仅是显示不太一样而已
输入:adb shell(确定你装好了adb,不过,你能遇到这个问题,应该就是装了吧)
然后
输入命令:/system/__unrevoked_su(使用unrevoked传至手机中的东东来获取root执行权限)
输入:cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 >/sdcard/misc.img(将misc分区镜像导出到sd卡上的misc.img文件中,强调一次,cat后面是有一个空格的!)
输入:getprop ro.cid(获取正确的CID号)
上一命令会有一个返回值:11111111(这个仅作为举例,请记下你获取到的值)
输入:exit(退出root)
输入:exit(退出adb shell)
输入:adb pull /sdcard/misc.img(将misc.img文件复制到CMD执行路径下,例如图中是Kitchen这个文件夹中,手动复制亦可,自由变通)
第一步完成了(这个时候没必要把CMD关了,待会还要用的)
现在打开一个十六进制编辑器,我用的winhex(提示镜像文件为磁盘时,选择否)
从0位置开始进行编辑。将上面获得的CID值写入,最后一位以00填充作为结束,如下图
然后就是要把这个misc.img文件重新刷回手机了。
输入:adb push misc.img /sdcard/new-misc.img(将该好的misc.img传到SD卡中,命名为new-misc.img,手动复制亦可,自由变通)
输入:adb shell
输入:/system/__unrevoked_su
输入:/data/local/flash_image misc /sdcard/new-misc.img(将修改过的misc.img文件重新刷回手机)
Try this version of unrEVOked:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/dd5yh9
As I mentioned above in Chinese
1. Pull out the misc partition to a misc.img
2. Write the correct CID into this misc.img file
3. flash back
You can traslate the Chinese into English with google traslate
Try unrevoked version 3.21 seems to work fine
Regards
Vengeance

Was busy for the last few days, I'll give unrevoked 3.21 a shot with the gold card, thank you everyone again

sri, that is pretty clear, isn´t it? Have you installed the driver included in the tools>windrivers folder with the phone unplugged?
If you are not sure, then uninstall the drivers, unplug the phone. Install it again and then plug the phone and let it install correctly. Make sure that you use the oem cable and if that is not working try using a different oem cable and a different 2.0 usb port (it won´t work on a 3.0)
And make sure to
Disable any antivirus you have before unzipping the aahk

Normally the usb 3.0 ports are blue
About the driver: Why would you want to find it? The important thing is that it is installed so your computer recognizes the phone correctly.
But anyway, on my PC I have a folder in the start menu named HTC, subfolder HTC Driver. You could use that as an indication for the driver being installed.
Only Install the htc drivers contained in the hack kit

but when i enter the fastboot command in the cmd, it shows waiting for the device and no other thing appears.
It would be really helpful to me, if someone can explain me step by step procedures to root my phone and upgrade it as i i've no technical idea about Android.
As of now, am in the 0th step of rooting my phone.
So please start from the scratch and guide me.
Thanks,
Sadique

Have you installed the HTC Fastboot drivers for Windows ?
Have you HTC sync installed ? (if so, you might have to uninstall it)

Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer. Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

Hello! You can try these instructions that a quoted. But there have been reports that HBOOT 3.18 is not compatible with firewater, some say Sunshine S-Off is the only way left. Sunshine was created by the devs of firewater but they insist on charging (playing) for this one. In the case it is not compatible with your device they won't take charge you.
ETA:
Here's what I did for those that care
Purchased the phone from AT&T online
Received it yesterday. Software number 1.12.502.18
Used HTCDev to unlock the bootloader
Used this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2699065
To Root and Install TWRP
Installed HTC SynManager and it installed the drivers. I LEFT HTC SYNCMANAGER INSTALLED. I was going to uninstall HTC Syncmanager if I ran into problems
Turned off Screenlock
From Developers Menu, made sure I checked do not put device to sleep when plugged in
Screen Timeout was set to 1 hour
USB Debugging on
Install from Unknown Sources was checked as well
My AndroidSDK folder is in the root of my C: Drive, I placed the firewater file in the Platform Tools folder and "Shift+Right Click" and selected Open Command Window Here
I followed the steps posted on the firewater-soff.com site
adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp
adb shell
su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater
/data/local/tmp/firewater
I DID NOT DO ADB REBOOT COMMAND
I don't think I did anything special, but in case anyone else has an AT&T Phone with the same software number, you could give it a try and let us know how it turns out?
Good luck folks!

I've updated the zip for the latest version! I was missing a dll.
Stuck
I cant proceed to the last step
"This will load the image to your device and all you have to to now is wait for your phone to boot the image. Once you are in the 'recovery' you should see a orange purple background.
it doesnt load an image , my phone gets stuck once i hit enter in the CMD
i also cant S-off because it says it needs SUbinary permission
Regaining root access on 4.4.4? philz-recovery and stock rom via htc one m8 toolkit
So I made the bad choice of upgrading to 4.4.4 already (or so it seems to be bad) on my unlocked htc one m8 phone.
I originally rooted on 4.4.3 with the htc one m8 toolkit and followed the root with stock recovery manual using the philz cwm recovery. I then decided to upgrade to 4.4.4. via the software update on the phone
Basically tried to upload the image again so I could root again and it just crashes at the fastboot menu. I also tried to load the twrp recovery and it just rebooted my phone.
The main question: do I basically just have to wait for some update to come about for the philz_recovery image? Or is there potential i'm doing something wrong on 4.4.4.
EDIT: fixed it.. for some reason couldn't flash over the philz recover image.. maybe I did something wrong, but I got the TWRP to work through a standard fastboot flash recovery.. Back in business.
failed root
Once you have the bootloader unlocked download this recovery:
Philz CWM Advanced Edition Recovery
Then go back into the bootloader (you can use the 'ADB' section of the toolkit) and make sure its in FASTBOOT USB mode.
Once you are in the bootloader you'll need to open up a cmd window.
Once that's open you'll need to type:
Code:
fastboot boot
(leave a space after 'boot') then drag the recovery image we downloaded earlier onto the cmd window.
This will load the image to your device and all you have to to now is wait for your phone to boot the image. Once you are in the 'recovery' you should see a orange purple background. Goto:
=> Philz Options (something like that. Its near the bottom of the list)
=> Root device (SuperSU) {its near the top of the list)
This will root your device or at least put the SU Binaries on your phone. All you have to do is reboot your phone. (Keep going back untill you see 'reboot device now'.)
When your phone is booted up just goto the Play Store and download SuperSU by Chainfire. Open it up and you should have root! This will keep the stock recovery so you can install firmware updates later on from HTC.
I hope this helped!
