The G2 is a fantastic phone in my opinion, but for 200 bones that thing better be bnib. My thought is that the Ice Cream Sandwich update will bring with it better implementation on multi-core phones that will sadly make our G2's sorta left behind. My next phone will be tmo's galaxy s2 and I think it will stay a releveant contender for the next two years. Spend a little more on your phone and get one that will last.

I would recommend the h t c inspire 4g over the htc desire z because all of its specs are better than the desire z. You can get sense 3.0 on both devices by flashing virtuous unity rom

I'd say $200 is a fair price for a middle of the road condition G2.
Why are you comparing to the HTC inspire 4G? The G2 is on T-mo and the Inspire is on AT&T. They wouldn't both be compatible for either one of those carriers. I guess if you're able to go with either one and dont have to have the keyboard, the inspire has better specs and a larger screen (its just overall a newer device). But the service plan on AT&T is undoubtedly going to be mor expensive than a comparable T-mobile plan. Keep in mind that over a few years, $20-$40 more a month REALLY adds up.
As far as lasting longer, I'm sure they'll both hold up for a while, but just keep in mind that a used G2 could be 10 months old already (if they bought it new when it came out) vs. other, more recent phones that won't have as much wear on them. This is true of any other phone of course, and not just the G2, but something to keep in mind if you're really going to keep it for 3 years (doubt that, but go for it!). Also note that the newer the phone, the more 'future proof' the specs will be. The G2, while a top-notch phone for the time, has only 512mb RAM and a 800mhz stock CPU.

You should go for the inspire 4g its newer and it has a bigger screen and don't worry about at t being expensive just unlock it

Unlocking it doesn't magically give it the proper radio hardware to work with 3G on T-mobile.

I'll clear some confusion first of all I don't live in us infact the place I live only has wifi as a good source of net unless you don't mind having 2g. 3G is still a new concept here so the monthly payment is not the problem
So the inspire 3G radio problem is not for me
And thank you all for your honest feedback I will try to find a good bargain on inspire and jump on it

Just clarifying, no matter what radio you flash a T-Mobile phone will never work on AT&T 3g and vice versa. That is hardware, if that's what you're talking about sir
But it's all moot as the op will only be using wifi. The inspire is a great choice!

Just saying that the way you worded your post makes it seem like you can flash whatever radio you want to work on any carrier in the world, which is not true. Every phone is limited by whatever bands their hardware supports.
I'm sure you knew that, but for any newbies who stumble across this, we've had plenty of "I can flash a T-Mobile radio on my desire z and get 3g right?" posts.

If it was up to me, even if you don't have 3g, buy a phone that would work on your carrier's 3g network.

After returning a Vibrant 3 times because of a flawed GPS, I got tired of T-Mobile's excuses. I sold my vibrant on ebay for $205 and bought a used G2 for $185. $200-$215 seems to be the going rate for like-new condition.
Anybody telling you that it better be new in box for that price is forgetting the only reason T-Mobile gives it away is to get you to sign a 2 year agreement. This phone is still worth several hundred nib.

Desire Z - counting down the days

Well I'm definitely planning on getting the new Desire Z, finally officially announced by HTC today, as soon as it comes out in the UK. Love the keyboard espcially.
Is there a separate area for this new version or will chat stay here? And has anyone heard anything officially about how soon T-Mobile in the UK will get it?

Only on VodaFone isnt it?
dont know how long before others will pick it up
Vodafone for now, others might take it but no news as yet
Surely it'll be released sim free though?

what do you mean?
Personally I wouldn't buy any phone unless it's sim free. You pay for the phone through the contract anyway and the network messes with it. Sim only contracts are much cheaper and you can change phone when you like, selling the old one.
well, IMHO I don't really see what all the thus is about! the european 4g is pretty nice and would swap it for my Desire.. but the Z, not the nicest of phones is it? well, at least HTC will finally be as famous and as popular as Nokia or SE YES! I* cant really believe it but, I am the only person in my school that has the desire! YES! but it is pretty hard to type onder the table.. ;/
xx
If I'm going to be paying for a contract anyway (as I would need airtime whatever phone I get) then it just makes sense to me to get a free phone from them too, rather than paying £400-£500 on top of what I'm going to pay them anyway.
Of course, I'd probably unlock it and install a much cleaner ROM after a while, as I have done with previous smartphones.
I had assumed that T-Mobile in the UK would be doing the same as the US T-Mobile have already announced, and rebranding it as the G2?

Probably, but I would think they would only do this if it was a T-Mobile exclusive in the UK. As for Vodafone, according to an article on engadget, the Desire Z is exclusive to Vodafone in Spain and Australia so far.

Correct. A lot of manufacturers are now looking into dual core processors for mobiles. It's hard to imagine most mobiles are now more powerful than a pc from just a couple of years ago.

Don't know about that, TMob UK was the only wing of the German owned TMob that wasn't turning a profit and has been sold to Orange (French owned), so I'm not sure if TMob US is relevant.
And when it comes to sim free you should add up what you pay over your 18-24 month contract and then minus the cost of the phone and the same amount of time sim only. If you wait a month you'll find the phone costs considerably less than on launch day. Even if you don't it still works out similar pricewise.

The keyboard mainly, as long as the rest of the phone is pretty good too. Pure processor speed is never the only measurement of how 'good' a phone is, any more than that is true of PCs. One of the main reasons I won't go down the iPhone route is the lack of any proper tactile interface (that and being locked into what Apple want me to to). Yes I'm a little disappointed it's not 1Ghz, but at least I'll be able to use it!

That's what puzzles me - surely I'll pay the same amount for my current contract over the next 18-24 months whether or not I buy or upgrade to a new phone (OK, I might get a small loyalty discount if I don't upgrade). So the cost of buying an unbranded phone is purely extra cost. That's not to say I won't do it if I have to, but it just seems to make more sense to get it free.
Andre
When your contract is up you could ask to be transferred to a sim only plan, or do the upgrade through someone like Carphone Warehouse as they use unbranded phones.

[Q] Sprint Motorola Droid Pro Thread Mods ?

Hi All,
Just switched from ATT to sprint to try out the Motorola XPRT was wondering if we can either start a new thread on the sprint version or not? Or a seperate thread on main forum just for the Sprint Version? A little about me....
Always been into phones, Currently have Blackberry Torch AT&T and a HTC Desire Z unbranded. ATT service sucks in the new condo I purchased and I been eying the droid pro since It was been released on VZW but I refuse to be raped by the plans lol... I have so many diffrent smart phones its ridiculous but just wanted to put this out there because I love this phone so far except that it does suck in direct sunlight unless brightness is turned almost to 75%. I already tried to see if the radio frequencies were locked by putting in my gf att sim card and it said no gsm networks detected..
I just wanted to see if someone would be willing to work on getting this rooted so we can enjoy some fun.
I already tried Z4 root all in one root no go...
I am up for trying some things out as I am in withing my 30 day trial period
Froyo or Gingerbread? Gingerbread is so far unrootable, while Froyo is rootable using aroot or superoneclick
Its froyo 2.2.2 ill try using aroot....
Sent from my MB612 using XDA App
WOW I shouldve looked more...But I just used"Superoneclick" root install method using the universal root and it worked. I am rooted.
I realize the Sprint Motorola XPRT is a retread of the Droid Pro (with a better battery), but to release it with Froyo and 3G-only made it a questionable move in my mind (I considered it), even if the target market was Blackberry users.

I feel quite the oppisite, I'm glad its 3g only because $10 less a month on my bill and until Sprint gets wimax/lte on a better band imo sprints 4g sucks.....I have the evo shift and have used the og evo and for the most part unless you are within 8 blocks from the tower it disconnects frequently and hangs....
Having froyo at launch was a plus since rooting was done using 1 click and in the evo shift forums gingerbread doesnt have an exploit yet....

HTC one X on AT&T

Is anyone using the HTC one X international version on AT&T?
Did you have to go and get a microSIM at the store?

If you are provisioned for Android's HSPA+ plans you should be able to just cut your sim card and use it in the phone without any fuss.
You can just cut your current sim into a micro sim.
You don't need to change data plans so long as you were on an iPhone or smartphone beforehand. But you can if you want.
Just got mine today and it works great. I just changed to a micro and grabbed a sim adapter to go back to full when I use my Note. Didn't have to do anything else to get it up and running. Amazing phone
You don't need to pay more than 15 bucks for data unlimited data. Non smartphone is the same speed. They don't know its a smartphone if you dont tell them.

Not always true.....some international phones don't work with medianet
At least I've read some Galaxy Nexus GSM don't work, the companies give AT&T IMEI's sometimes.
I have the international version of the One X running on AT&T in Los Angeles/ San Diego area. I am loving it. No downsides to going with the international version except you wont get LTE. The data connection is still very fast though and completely functional.
The One X micro sim is easy to make. Cut your sim with a butcher knife and a cutting board. Its harder if you dont have a friends micro sim as an example. You are going to love this phone.
I have the note too with an adapter since I came from the 4s. The one x works great with AT&T but my unlocked note gets slightly better data speeds. Like a gb more dl about the same upload compared to the x

I am waiting for the Nexus 4 to get back in stock. Going to run the BYOP Straight Talk plan on it. :good:
funny thing is that if you ask that question on a Dinc forum where people are still actively using and developing for the Dinc, the correct answer should be......another Dinc! lots of used ones on eBay for under 60$. Unlocked, Rooted, overclocked and running a better OS than Stock plus EXT4 fix makes this device still a usable device today.
but on a more serious note, me using the Dinc is tied into a couple of factors-that I am on Verizon and probably staying that way but might go to one of it;s derivatives like Pageplus Cellular. this keeps me in the CDMA/3G world for the time being so any replacement would have to be compatible.
seems like this question gets asked alot-what are some 3G VZW compatible phones out there? can you take a VZW phone and bring it to Straighttalk as easy as you can with Pageplus Cellular?

I am currently on Pageplus and don't have any complaints. I have looked around for a newer CDMA phone and the prices are crazy. The Nexus 4 is the best deal I have seen but I will have to switch to Straight Talk as it is GSM only. I don't think there is an option on Straight Talk to bring your own CDMA phone.
yes, that is my understanding on Straighttalk as well-they support sprint CDMA phones with some flashing or modification but it;s not easy. They want to push everyone to GSM.
So do you have a Dinc on pageplus? how is that working? was there any complications with getting it working on their service?

Pageplus has been problem free for me. The website can occasionally be a pain to deal with when purchasing more minutes is my only complaint. The Dinc was a breeze to port and everything worked without any setup. If you need any info on Pageplus, go to http://www.howardforums.com/ and look up Pageplus. They have lots of info.
I have two Dinc's on Page Plus currently, no problems at all, OTA programming was all that was needed. I've activated a bunch of phones on PP over the years, for myself and for friends, and compared to the hacking you used to have to do on 'feature phones' to get WAP access working, Dincs are super easy. I've also done a few Droid X's and a Droid X2, also with no issues. Currently, newer phones, in addition to being quite expensive, are also 4G, which makes them a pain to activate on PP and usually requires some significant hacking. Definitely do your homework before buying a 4G phone with plans of activating it on PP.
It depends on your plans. If you plan on sticking with Verizon you could go with the Samsung GS3 or the Note 2 (I think Verizon has the Note 2). If large screens aren't your thing you can go with the HTC Incredible 4G or Motorola Razer M.
Sent from my Nexus 4
just switched my GF feature phone on Pageplus Cellular to a Dinc I bought on eBay running CM10.1. happened easier than I expected as I was able to do everything via live chat without holding forever on the phone. text messaging seems to work including notifications. have it on the TNT 1200 plan, lets see if that will work for a month.

[Q] Verizon or T-Mobile?

I've looked and looked and if I missed something, I apologize.
I'm currently on Verizon. I left T-Mobile way back when to get the Incredible and upgraded to the GNEX the day it became available. I carried over my unlimited data and now I'm just a little pissed I have to give it up (or pay full price or pay for an extra line).
I've been out of the loop for some time, but browse the forums enough to hear people complain about the CDMA phones (mostly been with the GNEX). The One is offered on Verizon and T-Mobile and now I'm able to stay and upgrade or leave and go elsewhere.
I've had and loved T-Mo before. Their service here is just as good as Verizon. I also enjoy their surf the net while you talk (mom can rambe sometimes).
But I can find a plan with either one...
Should I get away from Verizon's phones for a T-mobile. Is it easier to unlock/root/ROM? Is there more support for those things (Dev working on new updates)?
Thanks in advance. Sorry if there is something I missed.

The Verizon HTC One is newer and will not have root or a bootloader unlock immediately, but considering the T-Mobile HTC One has been around for months now, it most likely has a working root. If you stay with Verizon we will most likely get a root and bootloader unlock within a week or two. It's your choice. Which carrier do you prefer? Why did you pick Verizon in the first place if coverage is the same?

I left verizon for the G1 on T-Mobile then left T-Mobile for the HTC Incredible. Since I have my eye on the One and can get it on either I wanted to know which provider (or version of phone actually) would be better,
I'm sure someone will come up with something for the Verizon version, I just wanted to know which would have more support for ROMs and such in the future. With my GNEX, it always seemed the GSM version had more and quicker updates.
I really don't prefer one over the other, but I guess I'm just upset Verizon won't let me keep my Unlimited and T-Mobile offers it still.

I know Verizon is great as far as coverage, but I know T-Mobile isn't bad in my area either.
I just really want to know if there will be developers that care about this version like I'm sure they are with the GSM version.
I am glad to see that it's unlockable (for now). That puts even more of a time crunch as I'm sure Verizon will have an OTA out there to kill that soon....
I did 2 months of t-mobile prepaid just to test our their new LTE network in my area (San Jose Bay Area, CA). I have 2 verizon lines, 1 for work and 1 for person.
Yesterday, I officially terminated my personal Verizon line and moved the number to T-Mobile. While T-Mobile's 3G/4G HSPA reception is shotty, their LTE network in San Jose is extremely solid and robust, especially considering how new it is.
Just my thoughts and opinions.
I just switched from Verizon to T Mobile, I tested it out for a week before I ported my line. T Mobile is just as fast here in Chicago and about $50 lower a month than Verizon. If you travel I would probably stick with Verizon. I just went from Chicago to NJ and had terrible to no signal through OH & PA.
I have used both carriers. In my opinion Verizon has the best coverage, but t mobile has the cheapest plan. When I was with Verizon I paid 130 a month and right know I'm only paying 70 a month for t mobile for unlimited everything.

Every HTC phone I've had so far allowed data while on the phone. That's not unique to T-Mobile. My vzw phones (HTC) have all done it...including this ONE

All 4g data can run while on a call regardless of carrier. 3g was limited to resound and thunderbolt on verizon

To be honest, I just figured this out last night as I was on hold on a call and answering emails. I remember I wasn't able to do that at one point, and never even noticed the change. The commercials come to mind of other carriers making fun of Verizon not being able to do that so I never even tried. Since at work and at home (if not on wifi) I'm usually only a 3G signal anyway if it worked I wouldn't have noticed. And I live/work in Norfolk VA which is not exactly the middle of nowhere. Maybe my GNEX just sucks...... I dont know. This is a congested area though so maybe that's why?
I went to both last night. The guy that helped me at Verizon was reason enough to quit them and never go back. The entire time I had to talk over his football game on his iPhone. Had it connected to a speaker and had it on full blast. I actually had to repeat myself numerous times... a**hole. He made it quite clear I was a nuisance to him.
I know I'm comparing two different phones and I'm sure any other radio out now will blow away whatever is on my GNEX, but speedtest on Verizon was low teens while T-Mobile was constantly over 20 on the One
I may just make the switch. If I travel I can use wifi if I don't have service. Every McDonalds and Starbucks has it, so I'm not worried (those are EVERYWHERE :laugh. and either way, I believe I'll just buy the phone outright.
I guess I still have the question of GSM vs CDMA. Since Google is pushing the updates for the GSM version, would that be the way to go?
Sorry for the stupid questions, I just don't want to make the decision to realize it was the wrong one. Other's advice is always appreciated.
buy T-Mobile. It runs same roms as universal so development will always be more. And if tmo had service as good as Verizon here, I'd be on it. It's so much cheaper.

Bootloader unlock already works per dev. forum.

I'm confused between the above claim and THIS THREAD
I thought bootloader unlock was not possible (yet?) on VZW

If you was one of the lucky few when the HTC one was first launched then you was able to unlock through HTC dev before Verizon issued the stop. Now if you want an unlocked bootloader you need to find a person like sonic with a java card to unlock your phone for a fee.
Now some has said there are devs who possibly found an exploit but are waiting until Verizon updates the phone to 4.3 so they can't patch the exploit right off the bat.

And does anyone have a decent guess at when 4.3 will be released for HTC One?

I wrote that over a month ago on day one of the release.

Well, this is Verizon, so I'm guessing September of next year.

If your service is the same, then t-mobile is clearly the better choice. However if you plan on moving around at all, I'd be very wary of t-mobile. I too left verizon for t-mobile once and went back because Verizon had superior coverage. T-mobile was great in most areas, except where they weren't. Verizon was always good, everywhere coverage wise
