simple question - how to make screen go blank, - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
My friend has a Play and she asked me how to make screen go blank and lock.

Don't be hard on her. The Power button is hideous: ill designed, hard to locate if you don't have the device in your hand and, to add insult to injury, they chose that place to put the LED notificaction light, something which is supposed to be highly visible.

and also make sure that the back cover is on firmly (clicked in from top to bottom, left and right), as that can make it a little tricky to push the bottom properly.
or to save the hassle of fighting the button, search the market for an app that gives you soft buttons (puts a little sliding menu on the screen, which extends to give you on screen buttons that emulate things like power buttons, home buttons, call buttons, all sorts really)

In such small screens, a row of dedicated buttons like Button Savior is a waste of screen real estate. And she would still have to switch on the phone with the button.

i cant remember what app i tried out, but it only takes up a very tiny tab on the screen. almost unseen. which can be moved to wherever you like. and you could even change if you need to only tap the tab, or hold it, to open up the soft button selection. and if someone is having trouble with the power button, you only need to use the home button to bring the screen back online.

wake screen using any of four touch buttons?

for a big phone isnt it a pain to have to press the top button to wake the damn screen? same thing happened to the nexus one ( has hack that wakes with trackball ) , incredible as well.
I would love this as well...hate hiting the power button...
Yea if someone makes an app that does this they should make the home button unlock it too
Yes, please that would be great. I hate having to use the power button to unlock.
Yea it would be nice if you could hit the home and search button at the same time to turn the screen on
Get the "No lock" app from market. Put the widget on your screen, choose unlocked. Now your phone will wake with the volume rocker. I keep the widget so I can lock it again when working (walking around all day).
yeah but I want to either tap the screen or a capacitive button to wake the phone. The mechanical buttons just feel like junk to me. I would like ot never even have to touch one of the mechanical buttons...
I'm with most of you, coming from my iPhone and having my Evo sit on my desk, I like pressed down on the face, so my phone doesnt move. Power buttons too hard to just tap.
Unfortunately, in order to wake the phone with a soft-key, the capacitive screen would have to be active, which means your phone would already be awake, thereby defeating the purpose of programming such a thing. Paradoxical.
Think along the same lines as a TV that you change the channel in order to turn it on... it'd have to already be on to change the channel in the first place.
Makes sense, I was just hopping for button on the front. I'll just need to adjust.
i wudnt mind having one of my vol buttons as a "wake" button... n then wen the screen comes back on it goes back to its default use as a volume key. this power button kills my shiznet >=|
I think I could get used to having to use the power button, altho I'm gonna side with most of you, being able to wake it from the volume rocker just seems more natural. Maybe once I switch cases the power button will be easier to press...
The power button hump on this silicon skin from Sprint isn't prominent enough, it actually makes it slightly harder to press imo. The hump doesn't protrude out very much and it's right on a mold or manufacturing edge on the skin which doesn't make it any easier to find.
Hoping the Amzer Luxe skin I ordered is better in this regard...
There is a app called menu unlock from team douche. It's available on the market [donate] or on xda for free. You'll need root for it but what it does is get rid of the swipe to unlock the screen. You'll still need to wake with the power button though. I'm trying to see if we can learn from the trackball wake on the nexus to port it to use the volume down button. With this the combo is press volume down then press the menu key and your going vs. swiping or the power button.
"No Lock" app in the market removes the lockscreen and wakes the phone with the volume keys. It was already mentioned in this thread but everyone seems to have ignored it.

[Request] buttons lock

if your ever playing any games and you accidently hit home or any other button then you know what im talking about. since the buttons are touch sensitive you may get some accidental clicks. i wish there was a way you could lock the bottom row of buttons, not sure if its possible though. maybe by combining two of the physical buttons (such as volume up and down) we could lock the bottom row until we need to use those keys again and then we could unlock in a similar fashion. is there anyway possible someone could develop this?
+1 for this. I like the idea of it being toggled with volume buttons, or maybe long pressing the power button and adding it to that menu. It would have to be included in a rom though, you cant give that power to just any app. or you'll never be able to close it without rebooting.
every time i watch a video a hit the search button by mistake. i really wish someone would do this. also it would be better if you hold volume up and power buttons.
Ya I actually just had it happen again with gvba. Note: it really sucks if you accidently hit the back button. Lock please!

right ......
You would have to be clicking on the button for years to break it, unless your pressing it wrong.

u sure? coz i dont have too much confidence on the quality of these kind of buttons, not only for this i9000, but for all
Well of course I can't guarantee it, but if the button should break anytime soon it will definitely be covered by samsung's warranty. I mean, worrying about something like this is pretty neurotic.
Your phone could drop any time and break, might as well wrap it in bubble plastic to avoid it.
power button ain't bad. i trust it more than the home button to be honest.
It would be nice to re-assign buttons generally. The back button is too easy to press by mistake and stop/close/quit things you didn't want to.

Home key clicking issue?

This issues has been solved!
Anyone have the issue where when you use the home key after you release the press their is a audible clicking noise, nearly like something is lose in the home key.
Edit, I now realise that I was use a little bit too much force with my press, this maybe why. Now I wonder if this home key is prone to breaking

You understand that the home key is not a button right? It just a capacitive key.
Dont press it, just tap it.
Of course it will break, if u press something that wasnt supposed to be pressed, LoL

Turns out I have a screen protector that's causing issues as it has a raised ring around the homekey. The clicking noise is the screen protector.

Hard home press button

I have seen many people on here talk about the hard home press button. I have barely used it. I wanna know why is it important? Am i missing out on a feature?
For me it goes straight to home when i press it.

Hard press then swipe left or right.
Kinda cool but Good Lock and one handed mode makes it useless.
Actually when my screen is off, and I can't reach the power button, or if it was on a table, pressing the power button is annoying, so with this hard press I can wake my device easily just like the normal home button in previous galaxy devices, and you can configure the pressure level as well.
Also in full-screen apps, or in case of hiding the navigation bar, just hard press the home button and you're back to your home screen, without having to swipe up to get your navigation bar.
