CyanogenMod on Epic 4G Touch? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Will the Galaxy S 2 CyanogenMod7 nighties work with the Epic 4g Touch out of the box?

Might work pending hardware, not sure if eveything is exactly the same.

OMG this is really what I most care about, I am addicted to CM7 roms and absolutely love them. I expect the original CM7 nighties from GS2 won't work because of radio issues just like the nexus s roms didn't work on nexus s 4g for sprint, but I hope just like from nexus s to nexus s 4g that it will be minor tweaks so that it will be done fairly quickly.

Doesn't Steve Kondik work for Samsung now? Maybe he'll be instrumental in making Cyanogen readily available on all new Samsung models.

Let's hope.. he hasn't been showing much love to Samsung in the past

I haven't used CM in a while... been loving MIUI, but I'll give it another shot when/if it runs on the E4T.

I was going to say something earlier.

They will not work. They have to be built for this particular device. It needs to have support for Wimax and the Sprint network.
If you want CM on this phone we have to hope a DEV will work on it.

We could set up a donation pool to get Decad3nce an E4GT to work on....

best to just wait and see. CM teams are awesome and normally don't want a donation pool. I bet a very good developer will come around and push CM onto it. It's the first Galaxy SII in the USA...
now if nobody jumps on then we should consider getting a dev a phone.

maybe he'll convince samsung to stop using garbage A2DP drivers....that would be awesome.
I've been using CM exclusively on my EVO since around christmas because the bluetooth audio streaming to my head unit in my car is so horrible. I don't know why he's the only one who's got it right. I plan on getting my GS2 in the next few days, and as much as i'm looking forward to it, I'm NOT looking forward to losing that crystal clear audio that only CM roms seem to provide.

Well no offense but it worked great on my Samsung Epic for Bluetooth streaming. Sorry the Evo didn't. I think that was just rushed BT compilation if CM was the only stable and clear offering. You will be much happier on this phone. Samsung gets the media portions of these phones right. Atleast for me they seem to be great. Though HTC's new Beats partnership could be enticing.

Kinda stupid but...

Will the Samsung Epic 4G ever get official CyanogenMod Support? I just got one and opened it this morning and I'm regretting it a little bit. I could still change it for the Evo, but I like this phone, so I was just wondering if more developers will support this device and if it'll ever have official CM support...? Thanks.
Definitely stupid, no kinda about it.
If you had bothered to look around for less than 5 minutes you'd have seen that there is currently a CM7 port in progress that meets criterion for Official support and just needs to be submitted to receive official support.
Damn I didn't know you could Search my entire history and see that I didn't read that Thread? Oh wait, you can't... and hold on, I did.
It is just a port though. When's it going to be submitted? And also, how about Gingerbread? Samsung's been known for leaving a lot of their phones behind... you think we'll ever get Gingerbread or not?
It will be submitted when it's complete, if you read it like you say you did you would know that, and the Evo doesn't exactly have an official Gingerbread either so that would hardly be a logical criterion in keeping the phone.
Yeah, but it does have official CM7 support, and if you asked me which manufacturer I'd believe in more to provide me some Christmas Treats, I'd say HTC. Oh, and the neighbors loud music.
Hey I traded my evo for an epic and it has its pros and cons. It really is a much better device, better screen, faster, and it has the physical keyboard. The big down side is there is not as many devs on it.
There is a team right now working on build CM7 from source for the epic so it will then be supported by the cm team. They are getting close but there still are some bugs.
If I was you I would hold on to the epic its a pretty damn good phone.
Edit: CM will only support a CM rom if its built from source, so as right now its not supported by cm. But from what I understand they are still helping.
I strongly agree with what you said, and for that, I will hold onto the phone. Thanks for that.

I love the android platform, the open-ness, the developers, the support... just wish they would take a clue from apple and make sure our phones have the latest version when it drops. It isn't like it would take that long for the manufacturers to sit down and get it working. Look at the dev's we have...give THEM 2-3 weeks and they can build an AOSP rom... why cant Samsung?

There's a lot of stuff that people don't think about when it comes to these things.
Here's a developer on a phone:
1 guys (possibly a few guys) working on 1 phone or several phones with very, very similar specs (e.g. the Evo and the Incredible)
Samsung:
A whole bunch of guys working on 1: all the phones that are out (which is a few versions of touchwiz spanning 4 versions of Android now) plus all the phones in development.
It's not like we have our own software guy drawing a Samsung paycheck who works exclusively on our phone. Those guys are all busy with ICS on the Nexus Galaxy and whatever else they have on the burners cooking and will eventually probably get back to us.
Patience. People didn't think we'd get gingerbread on the Evo...then we did...then no one cared because we already had a bunch of gingerbread roms.
It'll be the same way here.

You can't compare an evo with a Samsung product. Do you know the OGepic does not have official gingerbread yet. They have leaks but I tried them and they all are buggy. Plus being on sprint we have the cdma version of the phone. So when the European get their ICS we can't do a simple port.

Actually, Samsung does indeed have dedicated teams to support EACH phone. They have a Sustaining (or is it Sustainment?) Engineering department that allocates programmers and engineers to each phone model (i.e. the SGS1, SGS2, the Moment, etc..) each have their own team for continued support of the phone throughout it's life. Once the life of a phone reaches it's "end", then the team members are freed up and can then be assigned to the next phone that'll be released.
It's true that Touchwiz itself has it's own software team, but it's implementation and tweaks to make it compatible with a particular phone is done by dedicated teams.

Where is miui & cm7?

Coming from the og evo to this makes me sad ,theres is very little roms or tweaks for this device and most have more problems than the stock does.Wish i could port roms myself but i dont even know where to start.
Wish list:
-Working miui rom
-working cm7 rom
-working sense 3.0 or 3.5 rom
I already know 3 people that have already sold this phone cause of los and countless other minor annoying issuses but mainly no real dev support or even a sign of anything good coming any time soon.i know these things take time but this phone has the worst reception of any sprint phone i have owned to date so its hard to stay positive.Me my wife and 2 other ppl i know have all the same issues so i know its not my handset and we live in nyc where service was great before this phone.im doing my best to hang in here and not go back to my evo.I love everything about my gs2 with exception of cell reception and 3g data speeds and 4g is truly pointless.Anyone know any updates on my wishes?
Can't put a sense rom on this device and Miui is based off CM7. The CM team will be getting our device shortly (if they don't have it already). And Teamwin now has an Epic Touch and they're working on their recovery for it. Samsung cdma devices always make slower progress with development. People either have to be patient or move on.

Almost 2 months (6+ weeks if I recall) until we had CM6 RC1...
...Spoiled EVO4G scener who got in well after release I'd wager.
I had that phone on release day rooted in the RadioShack parking lot and aside from the millions of Fresh based sense roms (or themes, really) until AOSP came around the only interesting things were a smattering of cool kernels (to break the FPS cap, OC, UV, HAVS, etc)...and AOSP took almost 2 months.
OP, If you want it hack it or shut up.
EDIT: I don't mean to come off like a ****, but, a lot of us got very spoiled by the EVO4G scene...that phone was an amazing exception IRT development. I've never seen any phone accrue so much development results in such a short amount of time. I have been phone hopping ever since selling my EVO4G in June and came to terms with that a long time ago. The EVO3D is closer, but still nowhere close. There are millions of (mostly theme-based) ROMS...CM7 is coming along I hear, MIUI as well. I hated that phone, but, if you like Sense I don't know why you would get anything but an HTC. If I get an HTC and hate sense I know eventually I will be able to take it off, but, the opposite isn't anything I would bet on.
You should sell your epic touch and get a ppc6700... Just saying.

25th July 2010, 11:59 PM is when it was originally posted for the Evo. So 2 months, considering the Evo released on June 4th, 2010.
This phone has been out for 6 weeks! I'll go out on a limb here and say your expectations are out of whack dude. And no dev support? I'm sure the guys that have compiled really good kernels and ROMs already really appreciate that. I personally love slaps upside the face. I guess the guys that dev for Android find a way to block out all the BS and whiners and continue to push on for the greater good. I really don't know how they do it.
The funny thing is that the reason the EVO got so much support was it was hands down the best phone at the time.
Now Sprint has choices and with choices means less support on each device.
Just my opinion.
Once someone creates an AOSP kernel, it would help the develoment of CM7, CM9 and MUIMs.
The reason why OG EVO was so popular, because it was given to all the developers during last year Google IO. All the devs had a phone to develop on.
If you want to help, you should on work creating an AOSP kernel, its not a very easy task.
Please close this thread.

[Q] Quick question before purchasing this phone.

My EVO 4G just had a run in with a 2x12 and didn't survive to well so I'm thinking about picking this up from Sprint. I only really have 2 questions about it.
1. Is the SD slot behind the battery cover or is it on the side of the phone?
2. Does this phone have Cyanogenmod running on it? Do the standard SGS II Cyanogenmod roms run on it?
1, The SD slot is under the battery cover.
2. CyanogenMod is in development and there are no ROMs available yet.
There are about 15 ROMs available from other developers (not CM yet):

There isn't any cm yet. The other phones aren't compatible with cdma. Coming from an eris (Verizon hero) you won't mind not having cm too much there are plenty of good roms and it isn't like sense where it screws the entire phone unless you have cm. Same here. I was putting off coming from EVO. Took the early upgrade and theres no looking back.

[Q] I'm surprised devs are still working on this device

I meandered on to the development section and was quite surprised to see such recent ROMS and developers working on a cell phone that is turning 3 years old in 5 months. Many EVO buyers have had their contracts expire and are able to upgrade to a new phone. There are much faster phones out there, with better specs that are possibly more interesting to develop for, because you might reach a larger user base. My question to the Devs is why are you sticking to the original EVO? Don't get me wrong, I am a current original EVO owner myself so by all means, keep up the good work, just curious as to why you stuck to such an old device.
Simple answer is its fun! Its a great way to get practice and many devs have friends in the forum. So why walk away completely? If you still have it, you can test away on things you try to build.

Really only one active ROM still being worked on (UberMoment 1.6 - props to TheTehk17 for hanging in there :good: ). They never got a GB Rom fully functional (CM7 was close), all dev was, and still is, Froyo. Major hardware limitations and lack of support will probably keep any further ROM upgrades forthcoming.
Inherited an OG to use for now - great to see all the work being done! Waiting for the arrival of the S4 or M7 for upgrade, until then enjoying the plethora of ROM's available!
Upon upgrade, I will be passing the OG on to any dev here who will continue to put it to good use!

lol.. brain fart
Yeah, I never thought the Moment could successfully run Froyo, unless there was a hybrid Froyo/GB Rom. I dev'd a nice ROM for the Moment, but I think I took all the links down a few months ago.

The devs did a pretty good job porting over Froyo ROMs from the Intercept and Transform, and got those pretty functional. Otherwise, the phone would have been stuck on 2.1 Eclair! As mentioned, they have a somewhat working CM7 - buggy, but it does boot up.! The dev that ported that moved on leaving no one to work out the kinks.
So, for me, I'm like a kid in a candy store with not only GB Roms, but ICS, JB, AOSP.......and Sense too! Hell, I'm in hog heaven
lol. yeah, you can flash a different ROM every day for a year, going back to 2.1 if you wanted to

lol - I might have to hold out on that upgrade until I get this "flashing" urge under control..........
Will be interesting to see when the S4/M7 debuts, how long it takes to get dev going on each
i'm glad dev's have kept this phone up to date its alot of fun
