Where is miui & cm7? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Coming from the og evo to this makes me sad ,theres is very little roms or tweaks for this device and most have more problems than the stock does.Wish i could port roms myself but i dont even know where to start.
Wish list:
-Working miui rom
-working cm7 rom
-working sense 3.0 or 3.5 rom
I already know 3 people that have already sold this phone cause of los and countless other minor annoying issuses but mainly no real dev support or even a sign of anything good coming any time soon.i know these things take time but this phone has the worst reception of any sprint phone i have owned to date so its hard to stay positive.Me my wife and 2 other ppl i know have all the same issues so i know its not my handset and we live in nyc where service was great before this phone.im doing my best to hang in here and not go back to my evo.I love everything about my gs2 with exception of cell reception and 3g data speeds and 4g is truly pointless.Anyone know any updates on my wishes?

Can't put a sense rom on this device and Miui is based off CM7. The CM team will be getting our device shortly (if they don't have it already). And Teamwin now has an Epic Touch and they're working on their recovery for it. Samsung cdma devices always make slower progress with development. People either have to be patient or move on.

How long did it take the Evo4g to get ASOP ROMs after release?

Almost 2 months (6+ weeks if I recall) until we had CM6 RC1...
...Spoiled EVO4G scener who got in well after release I'd wager.
I had that phone on release day rooted in the RadioShack parking lot and aside from the millions of Fresh based sense roms (or themes, really) until AOSP came around the only interesting things were a smattering of cool kernels (to break the FPS cap, OC, UV, HAVS, etc)...and AOSP took almost 2 months.
OP, If you want it hack it or shut up.
EDIT: I don't mean to come off like a ****, but, a lot of us got very spoiled by the EVO4G scene...that phone was an amazing exception IRT development. I've never seen any phone accrue so much development results in such a short amount of time. I have been phone hopping ever since selling my EVO4G in June and came to terms with that a long time ago. The EVO3D is closer, but still nowhere close. There are millions of (mostly theme-based) ROMS...CM7 is coming along I hear, MIUI as well. I hated that phone, but, if you like Sense I don't know why you would get anything but an HTC. If I get an HTC and hate sense I know eventually I will be able to take it off, but, the opposite isn't anything I would bet on.

You should sell your epic touch and get a ppc6700... Just saying.

25th July 2010, 11:59 PM is when it was originally posted for the Evo. So 2 months, considering the Evo released on June 4th, 2010.

This phone has been out for 6 weeks! I'll go out on a limb here and say your expectations are out of whack dude. And no dev support? I'm sure the guys that have compiled really good kernels and ROMs already really appreciate that. I personally love slaps upside the face. I guess the guys that dev for Android find a way to block out all the BS and whiners and continue to push on for the greater good. I really don't know how they do it.

The funny thing is that the reason the EVO got so much support was it was hands down the best phone at the time.
Now Sprint has choices and with choices means less support on each device.
Just my opinion.

Once someone creates an AOSP kernel, it would help the develoment of CM7, CM9 and MUIMs.
The reason why OG EVO was so popular, because it was given to all the developers during last year Google IO. All the devs had a phone to develop on.
If you want to help, you should on work creating an AOSP kernel, its not a very easy task.

Please close this thread.

I forgot about that, yea that had a lot to do with it. As for the OP, stop whining, sell/trade your phone then, nobody cares. If your not going to contribute to the development, shut up and stand in line like the rest of us.

Once the Thunderbolt comes out are we still gonna get luvin from the devs??

I rooted my phone a few months back and now I seem to flash a new rom every day. I was just wondering since the new hotness, HTC Thunderbolt, is coming out in a few months, will the devs continue to support the Dinc??
I had a DX and swapped it for a Dinc specifically because there is much more dev support.
Thanks!
I don't think you have anything to worry about for a while. I believe the higher cost of 4g service will possibly delay the move of some people to a 4g device.
I'm excited about the first thing to come and that being the porting of the thunderbolt rom and it's Sense 2.0 to devices like the DInc. I would have to imagine that with the dump of the Thunderbolt being dropped a few days ago that it is already going on behind the scenes. I am a Virtuous user myself and I remember RMK stating that his next big change would be when such a rom dropped, so that he could incorporate the new sense.

The G1/Dream came out 28 months ago and it's still being supported by developers--even though it's been superseded in every possible way by almost every Android device that's come out after it.
That said, as long as the Evo is supported and/or Koush has a DInc, there will plenty of cross-flashing material for us anyhow--I wouldn't worry about it!

I'm happy with my Incredible and it will stay in the family - I'll let my wife and daughter duke it out and winner takes it <grin>. The Incredible is a very capable smartphone and it will be that way for a while. I have faith that the devs will do what they can to support it.

I'm not really a dev but i'm a theme designer i guess that wouldn't fall under dev lol
anyway, i'll be making themes for both devices (as seen in my sig)
not to mention since skin.apk's would be compatible with both devices thanks to the new Sense 2.0 it will make them universal across all Z/HD/ThunderBolt ROM's

[Q] Is it me, or are we a bit short on custom roms/developers?

Maybe I'm being impatient but does it seem to anyone else that after the release of this bad boy, we haven't seen too many well known developers bringing custom rom "bad-ass-ness?" Not to knock the developers who HAVE shown up. They're doing a great job. It's just that I really expected the community to go nuts when we finally got this phone and I'm not seeing as much enthusiam as I've seen for other devices.
Any input on this?
Come back in a month or two, I'm sure you'll see a lot more going on.
I gotta say that since owning the Evo 3D and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that there is a PRETTY good amount of development going on here...Look at the SGT 10.1.. I think as of right NOW the ET4G has more ROMS out and as for the Evo3D..Well it development took about a month or so before it started to pick up so..I guess I'll have to agree to DIS-agree!!..That's what its all about though right..?? Good Topic!!!

We should actually pretty thankful for the progress thats already been made. Coming from the evo 3d on launch day, i was waiting weeks for recovery/root having to perma-temp root every time i rebooted my phone. we got root a couple days after the phone released. give it some time. its hard, but it'll come for sure.
i in no way am dissin the devs for the evo 3d, i appreciate everything theyve done for this community and all the time theyve put into helping everyone enjoy their phones to the fullest.

and, remember, the Evo4g was sprint's huuggee flagship that carried android into the next level and into the spotlight so it drew a lot of attention, and, as a result, a lot of devs. also take into consideration that the devs need to have some way to get the device too. some are fortunate to shell out enough to buy it, some might not want it and be holding out for upcoming phones, or some might not be able to afford it (they're dev'ing is volunteer work so they might have other monetary priorities) and are waiting for their contract to end for the discount.
I, for one, would love to start developing. I have the time and im willing to be committed but i would have to start from the bottom and, frankly, its a long way up.
I stated this is another thread: You cant compare the e4gt to the evo 3d from launch day. For a while the evo 3d was locked and wasn't able to flash or get perm root for around a month. The 48 hours after it was unlocked there were at least 10 roms for it. We have been able to flash our e4gt pretty much since day one and it's been what? 2 weeks or so now? There are a lot less roms in those 2 weeks compared to the evo 3d the first 2 weeks it was unlocked and able to flash roms. So it does seem dev is going slower on our e4gt phones. I personally think it's because a lot of devs used upgrades to get the evo 3d and just cant afford to dish out the $500+ for a new one off contract. My guess is it will start to pick up once the price drops and/or used ones start to pop up on ebay/CL and phones are available to devs a little cheaper.

There's a lot of factors. The Evo 4g being given to devs a month before release meant that there was root, a stock rom compiled with root (for developers to play with) and various other things BEFORE the phone was released.
Here we don't have a stock rom out for people to play with. We have a stock rom tar and kernel to restore, but we don't have a flashable stock rom for developers to base off of. If anyone wants to build a rom, they have to compile from scratch.
Once we have a stock, rooted Rom, you'll see a lot of themers come out of the woodwork and start messing around.

Agreed that there are many factors I'm trying to get the deodexed tar to flash but it keeps hanging on me. I've tried multiple times, different cables etc.. it keeps either failing on me or just hanging up. I want the deodexed so I can start converting the theme I did for the evo 3d to our phone
Coming from the MoPho 4G, I'm in heaven here. It doesn't compare to when I had my Evo 4G, but there is still a lot going on. I'm sure in time more devs will show up. It was almost dead in the MoPho forums comparatively which is why I made the switch.
Another factor was a good deal of familiarity with HTC, their file structure and Sense. Many devs (who probably used their upgrades going from OG to 3D) had already played with Sense 3.0 long before the 3D was released. With this phone, gingerbread is not unique but TouchWiz certainly is. Of the custom roms out now, not one has done anything with TW. Not that's it's right or wrong...it's just a new animal. So, as more get the phone, more dabble in TW, etc. I'm certainly this will take off.
What is also nice is the phone was international long before it came to the US. Once people start visiting those forums and start porting we'll have a flood of great stuff.

Virus roms on epic?

I'm coming from the evo side of the market, and i really like the synergy, virus roms,.... Especially the eternity tom on the 3d
Any idea if the team is planning on making roms for the epic? Or are they strictly htc fans?
virus roms rule!!!
dude virus rocks!!! i was using his roms when i had my evo 4g i even donated!! synergy is sick i do hope they come over and do great stuff over here!!
I've noticed that development for this device is alot slower, if you will, compared to the Evo and Evo 3D. I'm glad to see lithid here tho, looking forward to him bringing either AOSP or CM7 to the ET4G. I must say using Touchwiz is much better than Sense (not a sense fan), so this makes waiting easier.
I would take any Rom to play with at this point tho. There's like only 2

Actually, I don't agree; the e3d took about a month to get permanent root; this device was rooted a few days after release..
Now, the release of lots of custom roms is slower than the e3d, but I am sure 30 days from now, this will be corrected.
Sending some emails to your favorite devs asking them to develop for this is probably a good idea too!

Actually, I dont agree
After the evo 3d was unlocked that same day the forum filled with roms. So you have to take into account the time that the evo 3d was ABLE to flash roms and count from there to compare not go from the day it was released. There were no roms for the evo for like a month because there was no s-off and no way to flash roms hence development was slow. But the day revolutionary was released there was at least 10 roms posted in the first 48 hours after. With our epic touch we were able to flash a couple of days after launch. So in comparison we have a lot less roms for the amount of time we were able flash compared to the # roms the evo 3d had in the same amount of time after it was able to flash roms.
I do agree development seems slower. I think another reason why it may be is because a lot of people used their upgrades to upgrade to the evo 3d and cant make the switch yet because it would just be too costly. But once we see the price drop and/or used units going for sale on ebay and CL this will make the device more available to devs who want the phone but right at this moment it's not feasible to get the phone

out of curiosity, how quickly was a stock rom available for the Evo3D?
I'm the type of person that doesn't make any changes unless I can revert back, I didn't root until the stock kernel was available.
also I think that part of the reason development may be a bit slower is that this phone is so much better stock than anything else stock.
Stock + root on this thing is already better (IMO) than any other phone with any other rom.
AOSP and CM7 will be the first roms to be really worthwhile.
On a side note, I'm also a huge fan of Virus.
I think a stock rom was available a day or so after the evo3d was rooted; its hard to remember, because things happened so fast after root with that phone.
Good point about how awe sum this phone is with out root; I was going to root it the first day, but, frankly, after reading all the little quirks people were having initially after rooting, and, the lack or really interesting roms or cm7 right now, I have chosen to wait as well
Lets hope Virus/Myn/Leosright, and Aanikam, and some of the other folks with E3D's get their hands on this phone, or, at least decide to do some roms for it...
No disrespect to the folks that have made the currently available roms/kernels..

I want to say that the official RUU was out before the evo was unlocked but I'm not 100% sure so dont quote me on that. The day my evo 3d was delivered was the day revolutionary was released. So we have been able to flash stuff for about 2 weeks now. In the first two weeks after the evo was unlocked and able to flash there was tons of roms and tweaks (only a few kernels though). So in the first two weeks both phones were flashable there was considerably more development on the evo 3d. I do hope it picks up though I'm waiting for cm 7 so I hope someone from CM picks this phone up so we can get a CM 7 build, if not I'm running it stock until then with adw ex

Mine is, running several different roms. I still have both and it's very noticeable but I am on the stock kernel still. I have no doubts this one will be faster once it's dug into a bit more. While the Samsung gets a better Quad the HTC is much more snappy/peppy.
I haven't tried Zedo's kernel yet though so not sure if it's making a speed difference. There are issues he is still working on with that one. I'm waiting for that one to get all fixed up.

It wouldn't hurt to take into account that this phone is just a mere 2 weeks old and a lot of people are still waiting to receive theirs as they are in a backorder queue. When the 30 days is up, we'll have a better idea how the development will be. It takes time to get developers to a phone, you can't expect them to run straight to Sprint and buy the phone on release day.
It's also worth taking into account that the Evo 3d was the first actually upgraded Hardware platform that had been released with Sprint in almost a year. In that respect the evo 3d had an advantage as their were a lot of users ready to jump ship to a new phone.
It's too bad that Samsprint couldn't get this phone out sooner to be on par with the evo 3d launch. That would have been a site worth seeing and I dont think you would see such heavy development for the 3d, expecially since it shipped with a locked bootloader.

Official ICS release

Please don't get excited I am just giving some generalized info that I got directly from a Samsung employee a few months back.
I was (as well as about 30 other people) told that we will have an official ICS release in the 1st quarter of 2012. That being said I think everyone can see the progress being made and I think its reasonable to believe that we can expect the official release either by the very end of this month or in the first week of April.
Side note: I am not a developer quite yet since I am working full time or caring for my infant child when I am home. I would like to say that all of the developers that are working on this phone are awesome, and that is whether they contribute mayhem and chaos to the community or they bring mountains of knowledge to the table. I only hope that all the rest of the devs sitting on their OG evos find a way to get their hands on one of our phone and get to blowing up the forums with more roms and more improvements on things. To all the devs... thank you very much for giving all of us an experience beyond that of the average user.

I think it's safe to say we will get an official release before June. Which is essentially what you're saying.

Actually I am saying before mid April, that is also if they finish working out their bugs before then. I was on the last leak for a while and they are pretty close, just a few more adjustments and then I'm sure sprint will test it for a couple weeks and then we should have it.

You realize this is ridiculous right? Sprint was the first carrier to get an official GB update for a Galaxy S phone. If you followed the leaks for the OG epic, you know that they had SERIOUS issues that did not get fixed until just before release (and some of them never did, there are still random reboots on stock devices, I see it every day at work).
Just take issue when people blame things on Sprint when in fact, it's a Samsung issue. Now, I personally believe the hiring of Cyanogen was part of a big push on their part to fix their reputation for being slow to update, and I think they are making a huge push right now to release ICS for the ET because they want to hang their hat on that and use it in the future. But in the past, this was a Samsung problem, not a Sprint one.

Preach!! I never left Froyo as my daily on my Epic. There were too many random issues on Gingerbread ...that was before I traded it in for a NS4G. I can't speak for how things are currently

Lol I should have put (carriers) instead of just sprint... I had the vibrant with Tmobile... I dont know much about the epic 4g other than development was what 4 people?
Worst variant ever produced (epic 4g)
If it didnt have to go through carriers we would have had GB when the i9000 did (international galaxy s)
Now the epic 4g may have had problems getting GB because it was nothing like the others (giant useless keyboard?)
ill say it again if ics didnt go through sprints hand we would have it the same the if not close to the same time the international sgs2 has it....
I blame carriers more for late updates but last year wasnt to good for Samsung... But you cant base that "argument" anymore because we are gonna have ics mid spring...
The evo 3d... Hmm maybe August?

Your argument now makes even less sense. The OG epic having the keyboard obviously didn't prevent it from being the FIRST Galaxy S device to get GB in the US. Yep, that's right, Samsung didn't release an official GB for ANY US GS1 device, until the Epic. So while there were challenges with 3rd party development (the keyboard wasn't the problem, a whole bunch of changes to the software and hardware were the problem), officially, it was first. And I would argue that the devs on the OG Epic are some of the best out there, adapting CM7 and CM9 to work on a device that is almost entirely unlike any other GS1. They continually took a device that is basically broken out of the box and turned it into a monster.
I mean no disrespect to the devs for our ET, as we have great devs here as well. We would be incredibly lucky to have devs from the OG epic come to our phone, as they are extremely talented and would bring a lot to our already excellent community. Please don't insult them again.
edit: I also should mention that the Epic was continually picked as the best GS1 varient by reviewers. Only one of the original 4 with a FFC, only one with 4G connectivity, only one with a keyboard. I would argue that the worst was the continuum, heh.

Lol this is why I hate xda/xda app I try to summarize a point and people look at it in a way that I didnt intend.. But w.e. I didn't mean the keyboard was ths whole reason why the epic 4g got a screwy GB update... Sh%t none of the galaxy s devices had stable gps.. (stock)but the keyboard didnt help... Just like the 3d technology for the evo 3d is being blamed for late ICS update....
The point that got taken away by your love and knowledge for the ugliest (IMO) gs1 is that CARRIERS I feel are to blame for late updates... Without them we would have it sooner and many can agree.. While some can disagree and blame the manufacturer... Or hardware of the phone...
And for the whole development thing? I am simply stating the phone wasnt sought after hence not many developers... Stop reading sh%t that isnt there I never said the developers where garbage.. So relax...
And if you think a keyboard is a + then Ill leave this conversation at that... Lol

Sprint has officially confirmed the evo 3d will get ics so don't feel bad. Sense is a little more heavy than twiz so it takes more time, HTC usually has their flagships updated by June.

I know but when I had my 3d (a month ago now my gf has it)
"they" (media/HTC) said it would be in the first wave of updates wigh the sensation/xe/vivid/rezound? Not sure if all of them where on the list but the sensation/3d variants where... Now its "later this year"
Its sad that last years company who seem to almost avoid major OS updates (Samsung) has picked up that "ball"
While HTC a well know manufacturer who pushes updates out (lagging with source) cant do as much for sprints "flagship" evo 3d (debatable)

I think it funny that when the LOS issue was hot and heavy it was sprints fault, now that ics is coming it is all Samsung. A little one sided? I think so.

The LOS issue was never really a Sprint issue per say. While many people argue that fact the fact of the matter is rooted or not rooted the phone had LOS issues out of the box. Sprint didn't really do much network wise to ge the issue fixed it was Samsung pushing out updates that started to fix the problem so I'm pretty sure this can go back to Samsung again not Sprint. Before I ever rooted my SGS2 I had it for a month on stock and while I had 2-3 LOS issues it was nothing that either moving the phone to a different place where it was sitting or just rebooting it didn't fix.
That being said once I did finally root the phone a month after I got it the first few EG30 roms I had massive LOS on each one. While we had a LOS checker and it did help at times there was just no way of getting around it. sadly flashing back to a pure stock rom always fixed the issue however. Move to EK02/EL29 (EK02 mostly) and the LOS was pretty much a done deal and it was gone again this was a Samsung update for modem and software in general which now fixed the problems so I don't see how Sprint is to blame in any of it. Sure they went about it and said they have no reported issues with the phone when there really were issues (LOS mostly which was a huge one for some people) but there was almost nothing Sprint could have done about that other then talk to Samsung and have them fix their software which is what they ended up having to do.

[Q] I'm surprised devs are still working on this device

I meandered on to the development section and was quite surprised to see such recent ROMS and developers working on a cell phone that is turning 3 years old in 5 months. Many EVO buyers have had their contracts expire and are able to upgrade to a new phone. There are much faster phones out there, with better specs that are possibly more interesting to develop for, because you might reach a larger user base. My question to the Devs is why are you sticking to the original EVO? Don't get me wrong, I am a current original EVO owner myself so by all means, keep up the good work, just curious as to why you stuck to such an old device.
Simple answer is its fun! Its a great way to get practice and many devs have friends in the forum. So why walk away completely? If you still have it, you can test away on things you try to build.

Haha, so the EVO is just a scapegoat for developers that don't want to brick their actual device?

Also the EVO is, and always has been a great Device. Why walk away from it when it still viable, and as stated hellua fun. The proof is in the pudding. Look at the support, and Rom Development available

4.2 on the OG is more functional than 4.2 on the Jewel. And I need the 4.2 Bluetooth stack. So . . . yeah . Thus the reason my OG is listed as Device 1 in my sig .
Hell, Devs are still working on the Samsung Moment
Sprint htc evo 4g
i bought a sprint htc evo 4g that i bought from amazon ... i cant use sprint in my country and i cant unlock a sprint phone since itc cdma right?... but can i just leave the phone like with sprint but root it and play wiith iit because the only reason i bought it was to learn everything about rooting and i needed a test device...??
There are jelly bean ROMS for the OG? Are all the radios working?

Sure. Since you don't have service on the phone, it's basically a really small tablet. All the basic functionality will work, and there is always WiFi.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Please, be specific. The ROM is fully functional outside of the things that require new drivers for Android 4.x, i.e. front-facing camera, and WiMAX.

It's actually SDX Developers...and yes the Moment was the "Evo" of it's time, sadly however, it's time has passed. I'm a new convert over to XDA from SDX, having to give last rites to my Moment a month ago. Really only one active ROM still being worked on (UberMoment 1.6 - props to TheTehk17 for hanging in there :good: ). They never got a GB Rom fully functional (CM7 was close), all dev was, and still is, Froyo. Major hardware limitations and lack of support will probably keep any further ROM upgrades forthcoming.
Inherited an OG to use for now - great to see all the work being done! Waiting for the arrival of the S4 or M7 for upgrade, until then enjoying the plethora of ROM's available!
Upon upgrade, I will be passing the OG on to any dev here who will continue to put it to good use!

Yeah, I never thought the Moment could successfully run Froyo, unless there was a hybrid Froyo/GB Rom. I dev'd a nice ROM for the Moment, but I think I took all the links down a few months ago.

The devs did a pretty good job porting over Froyo ROMs from the Intercept and Transform, and got those pretty functional. Otherwise, the phone would have been stuck on 2.1 Eclair! As mentioned, they have a somewhat working CM7 - buggy, but it does boot up.! The dev that ported that moved on leaving no one to work out the kinks.
So, for me, I'm like a kid in a candy store with not only GB Roms, but ICS, JB, AOSP.......and Sense too! Hell, I'm in hog heaven
lol. yeah, you can flash a different ROM every day for a year, going back to 2.1 if you wanted to
