[Q] Network Connection Issues - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Desire, running with Cool's Images (Sensation v3...7, Cool3D AceS). Since some weeks the network connection through GSM and also 3G is very unreliable. Phone calls break up, the signal symbols shows a good signal but I can't make calls nor am I reachable, often enough the phone doesn't find any network, etc.. Sometimes it just works without any issue.
It all started when I was travelling to the US. But the issue remained when I was back in Germany. I even replaced the SIM card. Other phones with the same SIM card work without any problems. I tried Software Updates (see above). And I'm using the latest radio (32.56.00.32U 5.17.05.23).
Anybody out there with any idea? Thx a lot!!!

No signal, T-mobile, WCDMA

So i rooted my phone over a week ago, and tried out many different roms. Everything was going fine, until i noticed yesterday that i kept losing voice and data connection. I tried updating to the latest radio which was out today 5.09.00.20, but still have the issue.
The only workaround i've found so far is to set the network mode to GSM only. But obviously it's not very practical for a phone like the desire. When i have it on GSM/WCDMA Auto, it keeps voice and data on for about a minute, then i lose it. And when it's on, i still can't make any calls. But i can make and receive calls fine on GSM only.
Anybody have a clue what's going on here? I tried calling T-Mobile, but they were as useless as always. Apparently there was an issue on the 29th, which is now resolved, and they refreshed something on my profile. So i dunno if rooting/flashing my Desire has caused this or if it's some network outage.
I'm currently running the latest DeFrost rom. I've tried SenseFroyo (Opendesire), LeeDroid & i'm now running the official 2.2 sense rom.
I've also been having problems when connected via 3G for the past few days, but only when I'm at home (so I think it's a specific cell). The signal indicator shows a good signal but attempting to use the internet over 3G just times out, and my voice calls keep getting dropped.
Like you I can work around the problems by switching to GSM only.
I think it might not be a problem with my phone though, because I've tried putting my SIM card in my Nokia N95 and the internet doesn't work over 3G on that either (internet works using GSM on N95). I did manage to make a call on my N95 when my Desire was dropping both incoming and outgoing calls within seconds though.
Weird! I'm going to give it a few days and report it to T-Mobile if it's still happening.
It's fixed for me now. I guess it was a network outage

HELP! Major network problem :(

Hi all,
I got my Desire from the British carrier "Three" last April when it came out. It was stocked with Android 2.1 but the phone was unbranded and not locked so making life much easier.
I rooted the phone weeks later and flashed a number of various roms and radios (usually newest ones recommended by rom developers) and just played around with them. No problems ever occured and everything went smooth.
However a while ago (about 4 weeks I would say) strange thing happened: when the carrier 3 does not gave 3G coverage it usually switches to other network's 2G roaming service. It is also possible to switch to 2G permanently by forcing it via phone settings. It stopped working in Central London for me while still worked elsewhere (very strange) so I had to rely only on 3G service. I thought it was a network issue at first but now I'm not sure.
Later (or at least so I noticed) the connectivity started fooling around: even when standstill (i.e. NOT in a train, bus etc.) and staying at home the network connectivity just disappears all of a sudden. Sometimes it comes back by itself and sometimes I just do it manually via netowking settings. This is much more common when on the move (i.e. on the train etc. even though it never used to happen before). Moreover, sometimes while manually searching for network it says "your sim would not allow to connect to this network" even though I try to connect to the correct one. Instead I switch "WCDMA only" and "WCDMA/GSM auto" options and connection comes back by itself. Then it disappears again after a while. Even more strangely, connection does not disappear if I am talking on the phone with someone but in other situations (such as browsing internet) it just disappears and I see no bars in network reception indicator and cannot connect to internet or make phone calls.
I know 3 has a reputation (deserved or not) of having "bad" network but I don't think this has anything to do with that. My Desire used to work fine before and never had such problems (except in specific spots which have bad coverage). Moreover, I have another old phone and it works fine without any problems with networking while the Desire messes around. I am sure it has either to do with firmware or, worse, hardware.
I have tried a number of roms, radios and settings and it's the same thing all over.
If nothing works is there a way I can still bring it to warranty service after flashing "unrooted" stock rom if there is one available? I'm so frustrated because I have no idea why this is happening.
Its because three have switched off 2g roaming I have the same problem. Search Google

[Q] Sporadic GSM signal loss on Froyo [RESOLVED - SIM HW defect]

My phone loses signal often without any obvious reason - i.e. I've placed it on a table where the coverage is 100% and just leave it like this, but suddenly there's no signal at all. Usually in a while the connectivity is restored, but sometimes it just gets stuck without signal (installed "No signal alert" to monitor it).
I'm in Bulgaria, so there should be no problems with the UK release. I tried with 3.4.3-11 and 3.4.2-155, loosing signal on both. I just downgraded to 3.4.2-145 and the signal is stable for now...
For the record, I tested it with "clean" install - wiped, then flashed the SBF - no root, no clockwork recovery, no custom ROM, no apps...and the phone keeps loosing signal pretty often.
Anyone else noticed such behavior?
Hmm, I'm loosing signal with 3.4.2-145 as well...I'll try with different operator to see if there's difference. The other option is to downgrade to Eclair - which I guess is not an option anymore after flashing Froyo...
I'm currently using the 3.42.155 and haven't really experienced signal losses. Could it be that you must get your hardware checked? I hope you solve it soon! Goodluck!
3g and Voice calls are related, when you receive a voice call 3g is dropped, and when you hang up the phone its resumed, but if you have the wrong baseband it could happen the opposite, signal reception drops when 3g is transmiting/receiving.
This may be your case,
To the point Bad 3g speed / bad signal / drops in signal / drops in 3g, all is repaired just changing the baseband.

Sorry I left the thread without update - it turned out the SIM got defective, it just coincided with the Froyo upgrade and mislead this is the cause. After I downgraded to 2.1 it kept loosing coverage, than I moved the SIM to an old Sony Ericsson and I got "SIM Inactive" error...I don't get it why Android/Motorola can't distinguish such hardware defects...
not sure if it's your SIM, but when i was on 3.4.2-145, i also have this same problem. Had a friend with a Nokia but same operator, had 100% coverage and my phone with EMERGENCY CALL only. But it comes back in a while or so. Not sure if it's the ROM or not, but now with LiquidArc (with 3.4.3-11), signal seems to be very good, or at least on par with the dumb-phones

Text/call problems on 3g only

Hi,
Does anyone have any ideas on a specific problem I have with the One X (on t-mobile - sim only contract in UK)
Had the phone since it first came out and the last 6 weeks I've been unable to send or receive texts while the phone is in 3g (wcdma mode or wcdma/gsm auto). The only way I can receive/send texts and calls is in gsm mode. I've been on the phone with T-Mobile for over an hour making sure my service centre number and network operator is correct and I have no signal issues (mostly full signal).
I've tried turning the wi-fi off to see if that's an issue but it makes no difference. What's weird is that in 3g (wcdma) mode I have no problems with data, so I can use the internet/facebook/twitter apps and upload/download pics and files just fine.
The engineer at T-Mobile (android dept) told me there's a 3g and 2g antenna in the phone and the 3g antenna may be faulty. Sounds plausible but wouldn't that mean no data connection on 3g too? I've also been told to check my micro sim in another phone, which I'll do when a friend comes round (I don't have any other phone that uses micro sims).
I just thought I'd check in here to see if this is a known issue. I've googled and nothing's turned up with this particular problem. Normally it isn't an issue as I use wi-fi for data so just keep the phone in gsm mode. However, when I'm out I swap to 3g sometimes and forget to swap back. I had two days worth of missed calls and texts when I forgot to switch back this weekend
In summary:
gsm mode = texts, calls and internet all working fine (though slow data connection, obviously)
wcdma = no texts or calls but internet fast and working fine.
Any ideas, help or advice would be appreciated. I don't want T-Mobile saying it's a phone problem and HTC telling me it's the network's problem.
The same problem here using a WWE model (no carrier) in Vivo Mobile (Brasil).
No solution until know...

[Q] Help with understanding logcat (dropping calls)

I have a strange issue with my HOX and i wonder if anyone can read something about that from my log. I've been having call dropping issue for a while now (seems to be on aosp only... sense roms work great). If i start a call and have data enabled I sometimes get an issue with signal dropping (No service). I never have that issue with data disabled. If i'm connected to a wifi network i don't have that issue. The issue is only there if I have data enabled and not connected to wifi network (either wifi off or out of range). I've been tring to understand what the problem is but I've had no luck (been searching for a solution for about a week... tried different settings... like "wcdma only" but the problem is still there)
The problem doesn't always arise but still pretty often... It happens often on some roms and not very often on other roms (I've only had this issue twice on cm11 but get it almost every other call on SlimKat). I've attached a logcat from SlimKat while outgoing call dropps signal. Hope any of you can shed a light on my issue. I looks like a hardware problem but i don't understand why it works on sense roms.
Edit: I first had this issue after I OTA'd to 4.18.401.2 (with new hboot 1.72). It's a shame HTC denies us s-off. Otherwise i would just go back to hboot 1.39 but i'm hoping i can somehow fix this because I really love AOSP roms and i really don't like Sense.
Edit2: This only happens on outgoing calls. Never on incoming calls.
Edit3:Took out the sim card. Polished it a bit. Put sim card back. Now in 10 test calls i never had signal dropping. I cut the sim card myself and now i guess it's time to go and get a proper microsim.
Edit4:Still had a signal drop on outgoing call.
Will report back after i get a new sim...
I tested the HOX with another sim card from another carrier. No problems whatsoever. I tried my sim card in an iPhone 4 and it worked without any issues. As soon as I put my sim card back in my hox and place a call I get "out of service" (with data active and wifi disabled). I just don't understand. Everything works great with data off or if I'm connected to a wifi. I really don't want to change my carrier (it's just so cheap )
BTW the sim card is not very old. Maybe a year max (although i did cut it to size myself but I've done that dozens of times for myself and my friends and have had no issues)
Anybody got any ideas? (haven't tested with different sim card from my carrier.. will test as soon i get a chance)
