Here's to hoping for aosp soon! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

That's great to hear Deano. I've heard in some places this phone has been hard to come by, so like you said...matter of time.

just a matter of time until the phone is readily available to all. there should be a donation thread to get a good dev a phone.

Anyone know if CM is working on an E4GT port?

I know Bubby was talking to someone in the Marketplace about getting one. They don't seem willing to make a deal with what he is offering though...which is totally understandable, I'm just stating this due to its seeming relevance.

Only problem with asop you will probably lose your samsung camera video codecs and other usefully programs/tools that Samsung have tied into the their framework. But atleast you can always revert back.

Once CM hits, MIUI will be able to start their port. MIUI is based off CyanogenMod.

cannnnnnnt wait for CM on this beast, even though stock is pretty darn impressive

Not necessarily. The galaxy s 4g doesn't have cm7, but they have miui running on stock kernel. Also, making an aosp kernel shouldn't be as hard as it is in devices that ship with froyo and the kernel can be based off of the galaxy s2.

[Q] Cyanogenmod? Whats the big deal?

Serious question...
As the Epic is the first Android phone I've rooted I've not experienced the Cyanogenmod ROM?
What makes it so great to want it so badly in the forums?
I mean we have great ROMs like Midnight, SRF, Frankenstien, Bonsai? (sorry if I didnt mention the other great ROMs available just didn't want to sit here and name them all as there are alot!)
So can someone give opinions on why it is so awesome?
Its based on gingerbread and was built from the source code.... We have a beta version for the epic... I flashed it a couple months ago and kept it for 2 days just to check it out... You should give it a shot...

I would give it a shot but I need it to be fully functional haha as I use the features that are broken
it is the hyped but up so much but it lives up to the hype.
If you were to tell someone four or five years ago. That a group of developers were going to take on a project to deliver a true open source experience and environment with nightly builds on a mobile phone they would have laughed at you. They would have laughed at you more when you tell him about this that this development team would be able to push Operating systems updates faster than manufactures of the phone itself.
The cyanogen mod is completely built from source so it does not include bloatware and no overlay
I for one love cyanogen mod not only does it add needed features, if theres an problem its discussed openly and the maintainer will actually let you know whats going on, if a fix is coming or its just totally borked. whereas with the telco or manufacturer they tell you that its not an issue and lie to you

Cyanogenmod, as stated above, is built from the ground up using source providing a true AOSP experience. This gives us the advantages of a fully custom and functional ROM without the disadvantages of having to wait for manufacturers to push out updates and having to wait for them ever so long. What makes it stand out from the other ROMS still is that since it is built from source, the ROM is being specifically built for our device, which will in return will take advantage of our phones unique hardware/capabilities to deliver an even richer ROM experience. Bottom line, once we get Cyanogenmod fully functioning on our Epics, that's when I will say th Epic has lived up to its true potential

Probably because you didn't read the post right also. CyanogenMod does not include ANY Google apps. There is a flash-able zip that has all of them for you to install.
Google doesn't allow them to include it in their ROM, but (as said) you can flash them.
What is the holdup with Cyanogenmon, for the Epic?
What is different about the source available for our phone, then the source available for the EVO? That allowed it to be ported to the EVO so much quicker??
Cyanogen mod is the fastest and lightest rom there is. There is also a bunch of really awesome cosmetic features such as you can change any of the drop down toggles and add them. The themes that you can get for cyanogen are awesome I don't remember some of the other features but it also has amazing battery life so that's why it is the most sought after rom. The slow down is samsungs propriatary drivers and the manpower to do this quickly but once they either have this kernel booting or we get official gb it will come faster quoting nullghost one of the developers on the cm7 team for the epic.

from what i know, the cm7 team is trying to port over a Nexus kernel to the Epic but are having troubles at the moment doing so. once the kernel is up and running tho, everything should move along much smoother. Once GB source drops, that should also help the devs out immensely.

[Q] HTC'S Sense in the future?

So now that CM7 is official and nearing from my opinion a completion and MIUI is being worked on and becoming more stable I was just curious on what others had to say about a Sense Rom. I know it's been talked about before and ports have been released on here but they never seemed to kept being worked on. So is their any chance a Sense Rom(even sense 2.0 or 2.1)would be considered as a next project to try and run on this Phone or is it something that simply cannot be achieved?
Just curious don't flame me lol

Yeah me too I mean i thought MIUI was never going to be ported let alone ever stable but with its newest release today it fixed the big issues...along with CM7 i.e. Wimax. I came to sprint in May and this Epic 4g is my first phone with them(bought it cause it had a big enough screen and a keyboard) and prior to that on T-Mobile with the HD2,MYtouch 4g and 3g slide...I've always had HTC but took the risk of switching thinking that this phone would easily have a sense rom..huh I really hope someday it would be successfully ported on this awesome phone
There was some sense development going on awhile ago by Xboxfanj. I think he's still working on it, but his time might have been occupied by getting MIUI stable enough to be a RC.

well now that miui is RC and stable (enough)..hopefully him and other dev's will look into seeing if sense can be worked at. I know CM9 might be next after CM7 is finished but hopefully besides that this will be under consideration..It would be awesome if it worked
Ok I'm gonna start working on this again. Wish me luck.

Any idea who'd be fastest or what the turnaround time would be with adopting the Sammy ICS drivers? I know a stock rooted Rom usually drops fast but I haven't kept up with CM so I don't know where they're headed with the T989. I tried out one ICS ROM that worked well but the two snags (lag and vmail problems) I had were pretty major and had to go back to stock rooted.

That wouldn't be too bad I guess since I'd get wifi calling and still could remove bloat. CIQ would still be there though. Wouldn't that need Apex or another 3rd party launcher instead of the stock ICS version?
What I really want is a pure Nexus style vanilla ICS ROM. That may not be available until the source comes out. I was thinking devs could get at Samsung's ICS drivers and processes that make it more stable but that may take awhile.

Samsung Source + Jelly Bean Source = E4GT 4.1 Roms?

Sorry if this is a retarded question, but since Samsung dropped the 4.0 source for our phone, and JB 4.1 source code was released, does this mean that people can start compiling fully functional Jelly Bean roms for the epic 4g touch?
If so, is anyone working on one?
You've got it wrong. The samsung source that was released is ICS kernel source. That doesn't really mean much for jelly bean.
There is work being done to try to port it nonetheless.

I thought that you can run roms on older kernels...for example, CM9 is currently running on a GB kernel. Since 4.0 and 4.1 don't have as big of a coding jump, couldn't you run 4.1 on a 4.0 kernel?

the first couple of ICS ALPHA builds i think was running a hacked together GB kernel, then when the first leaks of ICS drop for our phones thats when the devs started using the pre build kernels that came in the leak ROMs. ICS and JB still uses a 3.0 kernel so from the source that was release devs can make JB ROMs for our phone from it, thats what CM devs have been doing to get preview builds of JB/CM10 on some phones. anyone can correct me if am wrong because am still learning about these stuff lol....but i think thats it.
well team hacksung just released a preview of JB for the international gs2. So that means that they are making progress on it and it must'nt be all that much of a change from cm9 to cm10. as JB has been out for what, almost a month now. and some people are getting cm10 previews, alphas and betas. so it must not be that big of a change in kernels. Of course i could be completely wrong in all of this, just IMO. well probably have cm10 sooner than we all think. our devs are awesome.

+1 Well there is a difference of radios but I also dont understand how minor differences can make it so difficult to port from. You would think with the exception of radios & different key mapping that the architecture of both phones are exact, but then again I'm not a dev so there's probably some factor in there I'm missing.

Lets not forget half of our AOSP Developers do not even have this phone or acquired/reacquired the phone after the fact and do not have service on the device. Darchstar is no longer with Sprint and bought another E4GT with donations. Chris41G does not have the phone at all apparently.

Do you like aosp?

I just got a sgs2.. and well the aosp game is kinda ridiculous on this device... props to the devs who's provided the options they were able to on this device but where are the rest of the roms at?
expect to see some more aosp comin from me here in the next month or so
EDIT
JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS I MEANT NO DISRESPECT AT ALL.. I EVEN CREDITED THE DEVS WGO BROUGHT SOME GREAT ROMS TO THIS DEVICE.. I just want people to know I'm here to bring more to the table.. I'm guessing there is a major hurdle to overcome to bring aosp to this device since I'm not seeing a lot of it.. but I'm up for the task.. and I'll simply let my work speak for itself..
If you have an issue bring it to my attention but please dont harass me for stating that I wanna contribute to this device.. I don't want a bad rep at all and I hope you all will enjoy the work I produce
Only complaint on AOSP roms is that data speeds don't seem to be up to par compared to stock Touchwiz. Hopefully once Samsung releases the latest ICS source things get better since FI03 fixed the slow 4g speeds that haunted previous ICS builds.

Everyones different though, just for me I tried them all (ran AOSP roms for the last 3-4 months), 3g seems a lot better on Twizz especially at work where it's a very low signal area. And 4g is no contest between the two.
