[NOT MAINTAINED] Xperia Play Super-Compilation (root, BL unlock, ROMs, tweaks) - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

THIS THREAD IS NO LONGER BEING MAINTAINED. IF SOMEONE WISHES TO KEEP IT UP, PM ME.
This threadshould serve the purpose of gathering all what we know concerning the topics stated on the title. Most devices' forums have such a recopilation, so I think it's high time for the Play to have its own one.
First of all:
What is root? What does it mean that the bootloaders are locked and unlocked?
Given that we know what root is, we may want to know how we perform it. First we will consider the case where we want to root without unlocking our bootloaders. In order to do that, a root exploit called ZergRush seems to be working for all models. DoomLord has provided an automated way of using it which will make it ease for you all to root your phones if you so wish We even have CWM for locked bootloaders now, which will allow you to flash cooked ROMs based on stock.
The main reason why you basically need to unlock the bootloaders in order to be able to flash a different kernel, which is a necessity in order to flash true custom ROMs like CyanogenMod or MIUI. The reason for this is that SonyEricsson's implementation doesn't allow the kernel to be changed except using the Fastboot program, which can only be used on a computer. These custom ROMs require kernels which differ substantially from the stock one, so you can't simply flash them from recovery, they have to be coupled with a custom kernel as well.
Have you bought a sim-unlocked, unbranded R800i phone? Then you can follow these instructions. This method is official so unlocking your bootloaders won't affect your warranty, and it is free of charge as well. However, any software modification you perform (custom kernels, tweaks and ROMs) which is only possible by unlocking your bootloaders will void it. Aside of that, you need to take into consideration that you will have your DRM certificates wiped, and that they're unrecoverable. This used to lock you out of certain added-value that Sony provides, such as the Music Unlimited store and the TrackID app, but seemingly those apps have been updated in which they don't need said DRM certificates any longer. Note as well that your /data partition will be wiped too, so you will lose your apps and accounts (not the music, pictures or other content stored in the SDcard though).
It will cause OTA updates to brick your phone as well. Therefore, if you have unlocked your bootloader with this method, you can only safely upgrade your phone to new official Sony Ericsson builds using Flashtool . You have to reject every OTA update which comes. You can disable the OTA update function by wiping the proper APK file.
Have you bought any branded phone, or sim-locked to a carrier (the case of some R800i and all the R800a, R800at and R800x models)? Then you can't use the aforementioned method, but there is an XDA member who can help you unlock the bootloader. This method will cost you some money, around GBP15/ €18 / $25. If you're wary of having to pay, Alejandrissimo has proven himself reliable by unlocking dozens of phones with everyone singing praises of their work and him personally. Given that XDA has wiped all Xperia unlock threads, I'll link to his external site. It'd be good to read the first posts on this thread as they will allow you to prepare so that the unlocking process goes as smoothly and quickly as possible. There are three additional advantages to this method: you won't lose the DRM certificates, you will sim-unlock your phone (if you use a SIM of course), and OTA updates won't brick your phone.
Note that if you have a phone eligible for the first bootloader unlock method and you haven't used it yet, you can still use the second one if you so prefer.
So, you've unlocked your bootloaders. What to do now? You can relock them, but it wouldn't make much sense if you've just forked out your cash However it may come handy for warranty purposes.
If you've unlocked the bootloaders it's because you want custom kernels, ROMs... maybe you come from a phone with a development section bigger than the whole Xperia Play forum and you miss the daily flashing. While this phone doesn't have as wide a choice as, say, the Galaxy S, there are little things for us too as you will see below in the second post.
DISCLAIMER: You're heartily recommended to check the compatibility of the custom kernels, ROMs and other content. I'm linking the reference thread for every single piece of content to make this easier. Some content may be incompatible with your phone model or ROM, or decrease its functionalities. Proceeding cavalierly might earn you an unusable phone as a result. And needless to say, all of what you're doing will be under your own responsibility.
That said, the Xperia phones are really hard to brick. For soft bricks, your best bet is Flashtool. Hard bricks are VERY unlikely, but were you to come to that unfortunate situation, Alejandrissimo can help you to unbrick your phone in his website... and don't worry, that service is free

Thanks
Blagus, for his work regarding kernels, bootloaders and for being our only dev in the first cold, cold months when Sony Ericsson ignored the phone.
DoomLord, for providing his cool kernels (for stock, CM7 and MIUI, even kernels for CDMA phones!), the ZergRush automation program and working hard for this phone, as well as his rendition of the Bravia Engine. Guys, he even asked for a phone to keep developing for us. He's done a great lot, and he deserves a lot of recognition and praise. Remember to vote with your wallet!
ashergray, for cracking the R800x bootloader, sharing his solution for free until it was dried out and giving hope for them too.
Also Mills0013, who helped ashergray and bricked a phone in the first attempts of assaulting the R800x, deserves a mention.
yifanlu, for developing PSXperia, a work of magic for which he deserved more than what he got, and for his work on the R800x bootloader unlock.
The FreeXperia team, for bringing the awesome CM7 and CM9 to us.
The ICX team, for one-upping Sony Ericsson with Ice Cream Sandwich.
FraserTag, for stepping forward and bringing the first custom ROM (system image).
The stock ROM cooks, and particularly AndroHero: Bis dat qui cito dat!
007shark for transplanting the UK firmware to the CDMA Plays.
XperiaPlayer and bheremans for porting MIUI.
JasonStein for bringing MOAR of MIUI.
Chainfire for Gingerbreak.
The whole lot of people who brought ZergRush to us.
Bin4ry and Androxyde for Flashtool, and of course, the people who bring us their Flashtool FTF files.
Thomassafca in particular has brought some Flashtool ROMs, the SGS2 theme and the notification screen bar tweak as well.
NielDK for being awesome and generous enough to get a Play for Blagus, and for the precompiled CIFS and TUN modules.
Hatcyl for developing us some nice content and yielding part of his app's proceeds to other devs.
Laberkopf for his dalvik2cache tweak.
KeiranFTW for his performance tweaks, his kernel and his ROM.
XperienceD and tekken179 for their respective themes.
TLRTheory for his tireless enthusiasm in all things Xperia Play, which shows in the list of games he has compiled with time.
paulscode for creating Mupen64Plus-AE and paying attention to us and bubblegumballoon for keeping tabs on it for us all.
Last but not least, Sony Ericsson didn't drop the phone like a hot knife as we feared. I guess that earns them some credit, particularly after their misdeeds with other phones....

Great job so far!

Thank you alot.
But:
Some links are not working correct.

I need your help here: does the free R800x BL unlock method still work? I need to start finetuning that kind of things for the people of other devices...
@IE_Core: wenn du mir kein Beispiel gibst kann ich eh nix tun i.e. I need the links which don't work!

Ja also der Dalvik2cache link füehr zum Flashtool und der CM7 Link führt nirgendwo hin. Klar soweit? =)

Fixed. Danke schön

Great job @Logseman
It's nice to be able to point noob's and others to this one SINGLE thread instead of numorous threads scattefred around the play's sub forum This will help out a lot mate and hopefully reduce some thread starts (Q&A+General)
Regards Dousan...
Ohh @RacecarBMW started a similar thread like this at one point, it must've drowned somewhere on the way and it is a long time since last updated
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076660

Woowww dude you did a hell of a job here.I can't wait till I get my Xperia Play next week, once I receive it this is gonna be my "starting point"
Thanks a lot.
Un saludo de un madrileño,para un tinerfeño.

I think the post is done
I didn't know RacecarBMW had such a similar post! It would have saved me lots of time, lol.
I just hope this can be of use for everyone.

This is a fantastic thread!
Well put together! My only issue is that the Topic Title isn't quite eyecatching enough.
Should say like Xperia PLAY Guide to everything! (Root, Roms, Firmwares, Etc.)
or Xperia Play Resource Compilation Thread
I dunno just my thoughts

Updated with MIUI and changed topic name.

I just had to recover from a brick and start from square 1. I undid the root, relocked my bootloader went to 2.3.3 OTA. I was able to unlock and redo the root because I still had my phone's code.

Thanks for this i followed the sony instructions they didnt work, yours worked perfectly
which of the roms would you recommend? that was the only thing i would have liked to see in the second post was maybe the things the roms are good for e.g. o/c , hd record, ps1 emu etc
again thanks for the doing the guide id spent a few hours until i seen this thread it took 5 mins

Logseman is the man!

how to unlock my xplay r800i? what are the advantage and disadvantage of it? i really want to move all my apps to sd(32GB) but i cant my phone memory now is low so, is this the only way rooting my phone?

Just the type of thread I was looking for, great work.

Added note about OTA updates, and how the different ways of unlocking your phone are affected by them.

Hello, I was wondering the part DoomLords Kernel (based in stock), this prolly wont work for r800x 3.0.E.2.89 ?

[Q] Few questions from new Arc S user.

Hi ! I'm new Arc user since last month Before i had HTC Himalaya, Hero and Desire. So I'm a litte expierenced in modding, but when I changed to SE I saw that there are many many diffrent things in modding. I haven't thought that I'll need any modding with proper for me CPU speed, proper memory for apps and coming 4.0 update. But I'm fed up with SE software, specially with launcher which cannot be hold in memory all the time... So I need to ask you about few things.
1. Which bootloader unlocking method is the best ? I want to be able to relock my bootloader (if it's in 100% possible) in case of warranty. I've seen many methods from SE, some using paperclip, and paid remote via internet.
2. Is ICS from FXP team (You made veery good work ppl!) developed enough for everyday use ?
3. Is anything that I can backup before unlocking my device for future relocking device if there'll be that need ?
4. If there isn't any goog locking method is there any method to fix some software issues without it ?
1.unlocking using se website is the safest way,not just warranty, you may also lost drm,im not sure what it is,but ppl say its for trackid
2.cm9 still unstable, try it just for testing, not recomended for daily use, read the thread mate..try doomlord ics alpha
3.backup yes,but just prepare fw to be flash before relock(not really sure, never try relock,i love it unlocked)
4.no problem with apps, just for trackid you can use other 3rd party apps like soundhound
Sent from my LT18i
Using se website you lose ota updates as well
Sent from my LT18i using xda premium
But how is it going with relocking? Phones this times aren't bulit very well... My HTC's were sent do warranty few times (hero 2x digitizer, desire overheating and digitizer too...) And I'm afraid of loosing warranty...

About the bootloader [Again]

I had almost lost hope of getting unlocked bootloader when I saw a new hope with the launch of Galaxy S III.
How many of you know, the Verizon version of this device is locked with the bootloader, while others appear to be unlocked. Even knowing how bad this is, this may be an opportunity for many of the models with locked bootloader have a chance.
What I mean is that, like the S III, we have some defy's around the world with unlocked bootloader (most of them in china so observe here for the XDA). Would I be so foolish to believe that with a device such as the S III target, there is a possibility of unlocking the bootloader by developers? And this means of release could somehow help with the release of the Defy and many other devices with locked bootloader?
Yesterday, motorola mobility rep. posted this on their Google+ page
Motorola ATRIX HD at AT&T will have a locked bootloader to meet requirements; our goal is still to provide a way to unlock the bootloaders on our devices to those who wish to do so, more details will be shared as soon as we can.

I do not doubt. Motorola has a terrible historical. But i really enjoy the Defy and wouldn't like to have to change my device to update kernel/android. I'm really wanting to play the fool to believe in fairy tales at the time
I want to believe in this fairy tale this time.
I have a RAZR and just got the official ICS on it. I like my defy more than my razr. I wish I could put ICS on here.

Huh? Why not try ICS CM9 from devs Quarx and Epsylon3? Or even better, wait a few days and flash CM10 Jelly Bean...

Martijn, you know...you can try Quarx end Epsylon3 ROMs. I'm doing this right now, and since we got the dualboot, i'm testing a lot of ROMs. But we have a great problem, our kernel. On Jelly Bean android will receive great improvement on the sdk and with the system, like App stack navigation or Network service. Much of the improvement are done on the system, but some of then could request new implements from the kernel. A example could be the use of the NFC ( Near Field Communications ). It's on the kernel how to initialize on care some IRQ from the hardware. You could build a module to load how to care with NFC from the Android OS, but if it would build on kernel (like it could be from new linux kernels). And things like Dynamic writeback throttling, performance on reading or size limit from file systems
Take a look on this: http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_3.1
Much things i can do on CM7, using kernel 2.6, like the wiimote, so why this would be news on kernel 3.1? 'Cause there, isn't the OS that is caring the NFC or the wiimotes, but the kernel. A such difference is a example that could make a new version of the Android flow better on our device. And things like this we just get with a bootloader opened.
Quarx end Epsylon3 are doing a great, a extraordinary work! I salute them! But as the Android evolves, they work get even more hard if all that could be on kernel, they have to do with patches or modules on the OS. Praying for a open bootloader isn't just to ensure that we gonna have updates until or device could run it and be moneymaking for the developers, but is a way to ensure that this work will be more easy (and probably faster) to the developers too.

Opening the bootloader is not the only way to load a new kernel. Kexec was designed exactly for that. It's possible on android -- kholk have got that to work on RAZR already. There were some problem on defy, but I think it is not impossible to fix.
I may be wrong, but can we use the kexec to solve the actual problem with CM10? It won't work for Radio but we can use it for USB/Audio?

Thought we could exclude the Radio and use just USB/Audio =/
Didn't they used "burn" just as a expression?
Our Kernel can load modules, can't it reload them? We use a module called mod2 who kicks in after to add to the first module? Or to override the first one. It's a lot like kexec but with the modules, not the kernel.

I remember something called "Project Cheesecake" and "Operation MOSH" from like, a year ago.
Petitions did not save our Defy from a locked bootloader.
Samsung's different. Nearly all Samsung devices have unlocked BL. Nearly all Motorola devices have locked BL.
They tried using oem fastboot on the Defy but it didn't work so well I don't think.

[FAQ] Xperia Play Frequently Asked Questions [WIP] [Updated 21st Feb]

Frequently Asked Questions
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please feel free to PM me with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.
Q1: Why isn't Flashtool working?Make sure you have installed the drivers that are included in Flashtool. Make sure you are flashing the correct FTF for your device and make sure your phone is in the correct mode, fastboot or flashmode. You can refer to this guide for more help "How To Flash A FTF Using Flashtool" or "Little Flashtool tutorial".
Q2: How do I root my device? This depends on what firmware you phone is currently on. If the phone is below "xxx.xxx.62" then you can use the ZergRush exploit via superoneclick or flashtool. If the device is on "xxx.xxx.62" or above then you will need to downgrade or unlock your Boot Loader and use a auto-root kernel. Here are 2 useful tutorials "Root Firmwares Below '.62'" and "Root Any Firmware (Unlocked Bootloader)".
Q3: How do I unlock my Boot Loader? This also depends on your device, If it is a unbranded (has no carrier applications or branding) device then you can unlock it using sony's website. Unlock Bootloader Sony. Here is a useful guide that will help your determine if your device is unlock-able via the previously mentioned method "Unlock Xperia Play Bootloader (Un-Branded Devices)". If your device is branded or not unlockable via official methods then you can pay to have your boot loader unlocked by XDA Senior Member "Alejandrissimo" via PM or at his site "Paid Xperia Play Boot Loader Unlock".
Q5: Why should I unlock my Boot Loader? The main reason you would want to unlock your Boot Loader is to be able to install custom ROM's such as CyanogenMod, AOKP, Slimbean and even more. You can also flash custom kernels with a unlocked boot loader allowing you to get additional features, "Turbo Kernel" is a brilliant kernel as it allows you to multiboot 4 ROM's and they can even be GingerBread, ICS and JellyBean.
Q6: What is ADB?ADB is short for Android Debug Bridge it is useful for many things including getting logs, debugging and more. Here is a more detailed guide "ADB Guide"
Q7: What is the best ROM or kernel? This is probably NOT a good question to be asking. Asking this question will most likely get you made fun of, and since it is against the rules, your thread or post will most likely be deleted. The best ROM or kernel will depend on how you use your device and what you are hoping to get out of it. So, only you can answer this question, have a little bit of fun testing different ROMs and kernels and then pick the set up that works the best for you.
Q8: How can I "Multi-Boot" my device? The Xperia Play is now able to multiboot up to 4 ROM's and they don't even need to be the same android version, Jellybean, Ice Cream Sandwich and even Gingerbread is supported, For detailed information on how to multiboot your device visit this link "Multiboot Kernel (CosmicDan)" you can also get more information about multibooting here "Multiboot Guide and Help".
Q9: How do i install a custom Kernel? To install a custom kernel you will need to have already unlocked your Boot Loader. You can refer to the "Flashing a Custom Kernel" Section of "Flashing a Custom Kernel and ROM" for more information.
Q10: What is a custom Recovery?A custom recovery is required for installing most custom ROM's, Xperia 2011 devices do not have a recovery installed by default. You have the choice of 2 recoveries currently, TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and CWMR (Clock Work Mod Recovery). Most kernels include CWM by default but some do have TWRP aswell.
Q11: How do i install a custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP)?To install a recovery your can either flash a custom kernel with the recovery already installed (Refer to above question) or use this "x-Parts CWM Installer" although it is in the ARC section it will work find on the Xperia Play.
Q12: How do i install a custom ROM?The first thing you should know is that all Xperia 2011 devices including the Xperia Play are unable to flash the kernel via recovery and therefore the ROM And Kernel are installed separately. To install a ROM you will need a recovery installed on your device. You can refer to the "Installing a custom ROM" Section of "Flashing a Custom Kernel and ROM" for more information.
Q13: How do return my device to Stock? The first thing to do would be to follow the "Flashing a FTF File" Tutorial. If you unlocked your boot loader you will also need to flash the FTF from "Relock Bootloader". This will put you phone back to stock ROM and Re-lock your boot loader.
Q14: What Rom/Kernel Should I use? (Question not to ask)Please don't ask questions like this. This is down to you to decide. Try some ROM's and Kernels out and stick to the one you prefer. Don't forget you can install 4 ROM's at the same time using Turbo Kernel.
However You can find "everything you need to know about the Xperia Play here, It includes a list of most recent ROM's, Kernel's and more."
Q15: Whats the Best ROM/Kernel for Battery Life/Gaming/Performance etc.? (Question not to ask)Again these are not the sort of questions you want to be asking. Try some out and see what you like and how each performs for your needs.*

Flashtool 0.9.13.0

This is the latest Flashtool 0.9.13.0:
Download here:Mod edit - link removed
Flashtool is a S1 flashing software that works for all Sony phones from X10 to Xperia Z Ultra. They all use the S1 protocol for flashing firmwares.
This program was originally made to flash sin files downloaded by SEUS or PCC. From time to time, sin files have been bundled into what is now well known FTF (Flash Tool Firmwares). That is the core of Flashtool and the reason of its name.
Flashtool can also easily unlock the bootloader of the phone using the BLU icon as far as the bootloader of your phone is unlockable
The flashing feature as well as bootloader unlock feature are available whatever the phone is recognized or not by the application. What is only mandatory for flashing is to own the FTF file according to the device you want to flash it on.
Why should I use flashtool ?
Once bootloader unlocked, official sony tools do not work anymore.
Using official sony tools, you can only upgrade. No downgrade possible.
Using flashtool, you can choose what to flash and what not to flash. This said, many rooting scenarios are available implying kernel only downgrade to retrieve a patched rooting exploit and then flash back the right kernel.
You said unlocking bootloader ?
This process gives you the opportunity to flash custom roms such as CyanogenMod ROMs.
I invite you to visit the FXP Project that brings CM to xperia devices.
Many other features have been built-in so that Flashtool can also be used to (as far as the phone is recognized by Flashtool) :
Root your phone
Install recovery, busybox, custom kernels
Clean your rom (remove /system/apps apps of your choice) (Be careful, unless you really know what you do, do not modify the default list. This can make your phone stuck at the SE Logo)
Clear dalvik cache
Optimize (install of JIT v2) (plugin for 2.1 phones only from 2010 line)
Customize (installs apps found in the custom/apps folder of the flashtool)
Edit any text file on the device
Rebrand your device
So... is there any chance of rooting Z1 with this new flashtool?
Guys you better don't download tools in other places than the authors sources...

That's not new - it's out for some time and even it's nice it's shared here I really can't see the reason of doing that...
If you add something or it's your somehow then O.K or if developer asked you do post it here...

Thread closed for the following rule violations:
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails, you may then contact a Moderator and provide clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in the copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence that it was you who created the work, then in the spirit of sharing, all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by that developer. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie, allowing certain people to use it and not others). Should the developer decide to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes fair game for all to use, albeit with the relative credit displayed.
In regard to permissions, the same rules apply for this but if permission was already given and unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under extreme circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.

How can i RooT my 2.3.4 "SonyEricsson XPERIA Play (R800i)" with build number xxx.69?

How can i RooT my 2.3.4 "SonyEricsson XPERIA Play (R800i)" with build number xxx.69?
Ok so....i have been looking for some tutorials (semi NooB here) and i cant seems to find some new one or one that is consistend or just about root.
Also many are outdated, poorly written, and there arent many tutorials as i saw about RooT-ing XPERIA Play, at least not the one with build number .69.
Also if i DO find some good (as i saw from comments) like this one for example: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2204321 (i mean i only really trust XDA forum for stuff i do to my phone) the links for necessary files are long gone.
So...if anyone can please help me or rederect me to some updated, good and thread or website with tutorial that HAS working links, please do!
Anyway...
So i got "SonyEricsson XPERIA Play" (R800i) with build number 4.0.2.A.0.69, With Android version 2.3.4. Its never been RooT-ed as i know.
So i just want to RooT it so i can remove ANNOYING bloatware and free up some space and make it clean teh way I want tbh! I see no other reason to RooT it... I mean there is one but im still thinking about it (for now) and that is, as i heard, since X-Play doesnt have any OFFICIAL updaes, its stuck on Android 2 (gingerbread) i heard that i can flash a ROM to Android 4, and that improves gaming, which is what i want TBH, i mainly, if not always, use this phone for gaming and emulators, and if Android 4 custom ROM can improve already great (for X-Play ofc) performance, id be happy to do so!!!
But first thing first, i like to get informed first of all... But as for now, im just looking help for first step, and that is: How to RooT my XPERIA Play, please?
Thanks guys! ^^
Anyone..i tried numerous stuff, but im constantly stuck..cant seems to rood. idk what am i doing wrong
[HOW-TO][zergRush Root] Root w/ v2.2.x-2.3.x (NOT ICS 4.x or GB after 11/2011)
This thread is a collaboration by myself, paxChristos, DooMLorD, & amishxda. Please give credit where credit is due. Thanks. This method has been confirmed to work on all models of the Xperia PLAY - R800x / R800i / R800a / R800at. Also works...
