[Q] Galaxy nexus sound chip? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I don't know why nobody talked about the galaxy nexus sound chip so here it goes:
The galaxy nexus features a texas instruments TWL6040 sound chip.
http://m.engadget.com/default/artic...sung-galaxy-nexu/&category=classic&postPage=1
I have no idea about the quality of this sound chip and till now, I didn't find any smartphone with the same chip so I could test it myself.
the nexus s had a wonderful wolson chip which is the same ones on the fifth gen ipods.
The galaxy s II had a yamaha audio chip and imo is very bad quality compared to the nexus s.
So could anybody please enlighten us about the mysterious TWL6040 chip?

There are couple of threads already on this topic. Look for DAC.

Does anybody know which DAC is on this variant?

To begin with, is it the same Yamaha DAC as the international version of the Galaxy S2?
Alternatively, could it be the same Wolfson DAC on the Galaxy S i9000?
This does give me hope:
http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/media_centre/item/first_quarter_results_to_3_april_2011/
Samsung selected Wolfson Audio Hubs for multiple new Galaxy S models, including the Google Nexus S, its Wave 2 smartphone platform, one of its next generation Galaxy S2 platforms, its latest tablet PC products and its 4G LTE phone, the Galaxy S Vibrant
Finally, it could be another third party like TI.
Whatever else, how does it sound subjectively on higher end headphones? If you have listened to them, compared to the first Galaxy S (with Voodoo) or the S2?
Looks like it's probably the same Yamaha DAC which is in the international SGSII.

[Q] Sound Chip in Note 2 - Music Playback Quality?

I skipped the original note when I heard it had the same Yamaha DAC as the S2. I had the S2 and it was a terrible music playback device.
Right now I have the S3 i9300 with the Wolfson chip and it's pretty good. If the Note 2 had this chip it would be fantastic.
Anyone know what's inside?
It seems to be very good from all the reviews I have seen.
It is very loud.
same chip as S3 but we still don't have voodoo sound.

same chip as S3? thanks GOD:victory:
do you have any reference about that? thanks
agreed, it should be Wolfson... I owned S3 and the sound quaity is the same ~ great!
So far I have had a few people tell me that it will be the Wolfson and I saw Supercurio tweeting it may be Wolfson.
Are there any definitive sources saying it will be a Wolfson DAC? I just need a tiny bit more proof before parting with my cash.
Thanks!

wolfson dac?

anyone know which audio chip is in the usa tomob version?
according to the sources below, the Note 2 seems to have the same audio chip from the Galaxy S3 which was a Wolfson.

This doesn't mean the tmobile variant has the Wolfson dac. However compared to the sgs3 for tmobile without the Wolfson, I do notice a difference. Which is an obviously unscientific method for testing.
But it really does sound better
I was reading through gsmarena's review. And their audio tests look identical to the international version.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_2_att_tmobile_sprint_verizon-review-836p8.php
I don't think hardware wise there is any difference between the Note II variants, samsung nailed it this time.
Can't wait for the crafty XDA devs to work their magic and make all the roms work with all the variants
cant wait to compare to my infuse, its all good ,just wish cowan and samsung would get together on the sound side

Is there, or will there ever be, a Galaxy phone with a 'audio driver' that's not crap

I have a Galaxy Nexus and I love the thing but holy hell the audio on this thing is pathetic. I had a Droid Charge prior to this which was a total piece of **** but the Camera and especially the audio were amazing! It got even better after loading a Voodoo Kernel and I was able to use my phone as a replacement for my iPod.
Now I'm on the Galaxy Nexus and I love the phone, everything about it is amazing, except the sound is pathetic. Even with the Xperia and Bravia engines and all that it's just terrible. In-call audio is even worse, I'm asking people to repeat themselves almost constantly. What happened with the Droid Charge that they couldn't add in to the Nexus? Does the Nexus 4 have a better audio driver? You would think this would be one of the most important features to such a beautiful phone!
Any thoughts on this?

Yeah I actually just installed this. It's not bad! What settings are you using and what player? Sadly I use Spotify mostly so most the effects don't carry over properly.

Yeah that definitely made an improvement but its a shame that our speaker is such crap and we don't have the more advanced audio internals that other phones have.
SGS 1 probably had the best audio hardware of all Galaxy phones... Everything after was worse... Not sure about the latest.

It's a shame that Samsung had to cheap out on the internals once the screen started getting bigger.
Its really comes down to hardware. In our case, very cheap hardware. There is only so much it can be improved by some software.

Indeed, Galaxy S with Wolfson DAC + voodoo sound by Supercurio was legendary. Yamaha DAC on its successor was a piece of junk.
Do any of you guys know of a non-bulky DAC setup that would work with the Nexus?

Kinda odd that Nexus S had Wolfson too, but got a crappier chip in GN.

Same components except for camera. Economies of scale make that cheaper than cheaping out.
I use bluetooth stereo headphones specifically to get around the GNex's poor audio output.
Sv: Is there, or will there ever be, a Galaxy phone with a 'audio driver' that's not
Sometimes i find manufacturers' decisions really hard to understand.
Edit. economies of scale is a good point.

The audio chip in the galaxy nexus is not poor like you guys say. It may not be a Wolfson but it is one of the better chips out there. If you want bad listen to the Yamaha chip in the galaxy s2.

Perhaps. More worse is the loudspeaker, my mates Galaxy Ace plays louder then GNs "PC speaker" quality one.

I am sorry but being better than Yamaha is really nothing to brag Of course I agree with you that Yahaha DAC is a real crap. Audio chip on GN is not bad, but it's worse than its predecessor which is still kind of step backward.
Anyway my best audio experience so far was with galaxy r (tegra2) that was equipped with wolfson DAC.

Its a developer's phone.
Plus the Gnex had a 350 price tag at the time. They have to sacrifice some features to keep it affordable.

I know its off topic but man I wish the GN had a bigger speaker. The audio output is indeed good despite not being Wolfson, as a couple people said but that speaker makes this phone less of a phone than anything.
I'm guessing a lot of you have damaged hearing from over-exposure to loud sounds as I've not once had to ask someone to repeat themselves whilst on a call. Now, it could be down to the network I'm on but the Nexus is 100% fine to me. The only issue I have is the speaker isn't exactly loud but then again neither was my old One X so I'm not too fussed about that - it is a phone after all!

This doesn't make sense. A phone should have a loud speaker so you can definitely hear it ring and notify you.

I can hear it, I'd just like it a bit louder for the odd times my phone isn't in my pocket

Better DAC?

I had the S7E and frankly the headphone audio was terrible. I've since moved to the HTC 10 and the audio is excellent.
Now I'm not expecting HTC level audio, but something better then the s7e would be nice. Even just better software processing.
Has anybody compared any of these devices from an audio standpoint?
Since it's the same hardware as the S7 I'd expect the same sub-par sound quality unfortunately. The US version keeps getting the shaft in this regard.

I'm curious to find this out as well...
I had the S7 Edge and it wasn't bad just not as good as the HTC 10 - audio on the HTC was a standout feature.
I wish Samsung would put more effort in this area - in their defense though, they have been known to include some nice Wolfson DAC's in past Galaxy phones like the Note 5. I think it varies depending on which model you purchase (Exynos/Qualcomm).
Apple is rumored to improve audio on the iPhone 7 since they remove the headphone jack, so let's see if Samsung responds and gives more attention to it on the S8 and beyond.

This is why I'm thinking of getting a Note 4 C to go with my Note 5, cause that was brilliant with audio having a wolfson dac.
How does the S7 compare to the Note 4, S4 or S5 in audio quality? You guys have me nervous about my pre-order since I use headphones so much. I don't have anything super fancy, just some Shure SE215's
I use a Cyrus/Usher home audio system plus Grado and Sennheiser cans for headphone listening.
It depends if you call booming bass and searing highs 'good quality' audio?
If you care about music reproduction the Exynos version is actually very good. - Wolfson co-developed Lucky DAC.
I also have a Audio quest Dragonfly Black external DAC and although I use it if I listen critically the difference is not night and day.
If you're unlucky enough to have the Snapdragon version (for several reasons) you won't enjoy your audio as much. It uses the integrated chip.
Headphone amplifier power is limited in both versions. It goes plenty loud (for many unfortunately the decisive factor as to 'good sound') but it won't please head bangers.
If you value your hearing you probably won't want to go there.
The included head buds are useless by the way. I'd bin them asap.

Note 4 N910C was totally fine [at least for my non-professional view] w/o Viper. I didn't want to root for 6 months or so in order not to null my warranty. Right now it's even better w Viper. I wish someone can review and make side-by-side comparison for Note 7 (I guess Exynos version) and Exynos Note 4 in terms of SQ!

The Note 7 has Qualcomm's new Aqstic codec, and the S7E does not. This is the same one used in the HTC M10. That should help some, although the amp may be the weak link in the chain at this point.

Qualcomm is the company that makes the Snapdragon chip, so it's got to be the US version.

... which uses a Wolfson derived DAC. Likely better than Qualcomms solution, code notwithstanding.
Ultimate limitation is the DAC/amplifier chip ... ie. hardware.
Either way, you would be better off using an outboard DAC as mentioned previously or something like a high resolution player from Fiio if you want the last ounce of performance.
No phone will come close to a well implemented and dedicated player.
Forget about Viper and other similar players. Pretty lights that's it. It will do absolutely nothing for your audio other than adding some fancy looking equalizers. Use either Samsungs own player or the one from Google. Black player is another good one and simple.

Well maybe they have improved the DAC/amplifier chip for the Note 7.
It's annoying that a definite answer cannot be found on the net somewhere.
