Rootzwiki > ET4G forums > they have a completely stripped ROM for you.

Yes, there are other ROMs...
There are indeed custom ROMs out there...I am just offering help for those folks like me who are rooted but wish to continue using the stock ROM and just tweak it a bit by stripping it down and removing bloat. Installing a full custom ROM is a separate matter...

thanks for d info. keep kies lol it will comes handy.

Backup/Restore Suggestions...
The first thing I like to do immediately after rooting a new phone and making a ClockworkMod backup is to use Root Explorer to then make two copies of the following folders prior to stripping out any apps: System/App folder, System/Media folder, and the ClockworkMod/Backup folder (Which at this point contains a ClockworkMod backup of the original, unstripped stock ROM.)
I like to keep one copy of each of these three folders on the SD card itself, and put the second copy of each on my computer at home as a safe, redundant backup.
Then, if you ever want to restore any app that you had previously stripped out, you simply use Root Explorer to copy and paste the app (and it's .odex file) from your original copy of the System/App folder on the SD card to the System/App folder on the phone, and then (if necessary) change the app and it's .odex's permissions to match the correct settings that all of the other apps and .odex's are set to: Long-press the .apk or .odex, select "permissions", then make sure the permissions match up exactly with the other system .apk's permissions. Reboot the phone, and the app will be restored, good to go! (I like to reboot to recovery and clear the cache and Dalvik cache also...)
Cheers!

Thanks VegasRooted...looking to do something similar with my E4T. Too many apps running in the background that I have no idea what they're doing.
I'm having a problem finding the Insecure Kernel that closely resembles mine: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734. Can you point me to where I can find the correct one? I can't show the link that I found at Inspired Geek that lists different kernels.

Google "Epic 4G Touch Root Zedomax" and go to the XDA forum thread where you can follow the instructions to use Odin to install a (mostly) stock kernel with Superuser added to it, or Google "Android Creative Syndicate" and go to their website where you can find another Kernel to load the same way that has Superuser and ClockworkMod in it...Both will get you rooted, and there is a stock ROM (EG30) out there also that you can install with Odin in case anything goes wrong and you have to roll everything back to stock...(I did this once also.)
I am using Zedomax's Kernel right now...once installed it shows as "2.6.35.7"
Cheers!

Thanks so much! This gave me a great start to getting rid of everything useless on my phone.

hey OP, thanks for the list.
I posted a ROM a little while ago on rootz here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8056-rom-10262011-naerokrom-beta-v12-odex-bare-bones-130mb/
on the 3rd post, I listed all the apk's I removed through personal testing. There might be some in there you don't have listed, if you want to take a look. Hope it helps get rid of all the junk you don't need. I'm sure you are OCD like I am about pre-installed crapware

If I dont want to uninstall all those applications, can I just use titanium backup to freeze them and be just as effective?

depends on what you mean by "effective"
although they are frozen, they still take up a lot of space in the /system partition.
I like to remove them completely and keep the partition as light as possible

Cool

Thank you thread starter for this thread One of the best ever!! lol. I really want to know what all the apps mean and what they do before I remove it and something stops working that I usually use. I don't want to make any extra work for anybody though. I guess I can google the stuff I don't know.

Hey question for you all.. This is a picture of what im running.. With what im running am i able to safely still remove the above apps?

Those are mostly still correct. I thought removing Google talk messed other stuff though so I wouldn't delete that. When I run a stock setup I only delete stuff I know for sure I don't use. This includes the Samsung widgets and apps, Sprint apps, and the randoms like nova and nascar.

This is basically cakulins bare rom converter. With the exception of a few apps.

Does that still work? I seem to remember having an issue the last time I tried it.

It does. Remember that you have to flash it immediately after flashing a new Rom.

[Q] Syndicate frozen 1.2 cant install sprint apps

I downloaded and flashed Syndicate frozen 1.2 (coming from 1.1.1) and the Sprint apps are gone and cannot load them from the old zip files from version 1.1.1. Also the sprint network Fix.zip wont work on 1.2 either.
I tryed four times
the actual 1.2 update works great but there are 3 killer sprint apps and plus Allshare app that wont work with it
can someone tell me if its user error or if the new fix files just arent ready yet?
Most likely the files just aren't updated yet...check out acsyndicate.net for updates.
P.S I just had to reply because the sad face next to the title made me soo sad!!
U have to install them with root explore. Push them to system/app

Any files that are compatible could be manually pushed with adb or something like RootExplorer. Es file manager might work too.
The sprintfix will cause you issues, as it simply replaces the framework-res.apk. SFR 1.2 incorporates maddoggins 6 lock screen mod, which affects policy.jar and framework-res.apk. Framework-res is also most of your phones theme, so you'll be swapping that out until they release an updated Sprint fix. Allshare requires, I believe, mediauploader.apk and dlna.apk, both which I think ACS removes.
Also note that if you are not using Touchwiz launcher a lot of apps and widgets and wallpaper will not be available to use although you have installed them.

[ROM UPDATE 01/19/12][Deodexed][1.12.23-2.1.13 Framework][ICS] Nexus S 4G 4.0.3

In the interest of time I will make this quick. I ported this from MIUIScotland's 4.0.3 rom. Everything works if you flash the matrix kernel 13 or 14.5 (see below) Feedback is good.
Proceedure:
*v.1.12.23*
1. Full Wipe (format data, system, boot, cache if boot loops)
2. Flash rom (link below)
3. Flash either of the Matrix Kernels below.
4. Reboot and enjoy
*Update v.1.12.23-2.1.6*
Notes: ROM can be flashed over 1.12.23. Researching standalone flash results. For now install 1.12.36 (the original) then the update to be safe.
Full wipe if coming from anyother rom besides 1.12.23
*memory offset notice during flash is not an error notice, so disregard as normal.*
Working:
WiFi, bluetooth, voice, data, GPS, market, launcher, camera, DHCP, SU, Exchange (ActiveSync), Flash Player*
*Download the BrowserGoogle.apk>place in /system/app directory>fix permissions>enjoy
Not Working:

Update: Below is the ROM Update I promised to deliver.
Version: 1.12.23-2.1.6----->>>>> I have merged my orginal base rom with the 2.1.6 MIUI framework. This merge results with all features functioning as in the orginal rom, but with the added system ui color scheme of 2.1.6. Also, I have added about a dozen new binary files in the /system/bin directory that I have aquaired and or patched from the basic ARMel Linux architecture. In addition to these binary files, I included about 12 new apk in the rom to minimize my own post flash configuration process. I hope that this can save someone else a little time and frusteration too. Bonus features of the new framework are the Supermarket, Notes, YouTube, Google+, DSPManager, the original SprintTV app, the orginal Nexus 3D Gallery, and all Supermarket downloads are now fully functioning. The build number is the same to prevent the mobile data from crashing. So with out further adoo, Here tis'...

[APP] 'ODEX ME': Odexing deodexed roms for a BOOST IN PERFORMANCE

Hello Galaxy Nexus Xda Users!
Informations:
Here is a simple apk to odex automatically, easily and securely deodexed roms.
This apk has been coded by the famous Paul Obrien from Modaco Roms and Forums.
This guy is just a genious.
The original apk has been done for Galaxy S II but it works on Galaxy Nexus (tested working). --> Original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1215271
Paul is even using it in his own Galaxy Nexus 4.0.4 Custom Rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487056
But I tested the apk on other 4.0.3 deodexed roms that you can find in the development section of the Galaxy Nexus and it is working perfectly (Aokp odexed rom is wonderful...)
Odexing a deodexed rom is giving you a boost in smoothness (you can see it in the launcher or in scrolling through system apps), performance and battery.
It gives you the flexibility to have a custom rom with modified system, framework and design AND all the tweaks that come with a custom rom in addition to the performance of an odexed stock rom.
To use it:
1) make sure you have a custom rooted rom / kernel with init.d support (scripts must be able to run at boot: it is a folder in /system/etc). It is very important or it won't run pre-boot scripts... Thanks to open1your1eyes0 who remarked it.
You can try this useful application to add init.d support to your ROM / kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933849
2) make sure that you don't have transparent status bar before odexing or you will loose your bar after odexing... (for AOKP users for example). Thanks to frantic912 who noticed it.
3) simply put the apk in /system/app folder with a file browser like "Root Explorer" (the folder must be in RW mode to copy the file)
4) do a nandroid backup in cwm and / or titanium backup of all your apps (even the system ones like Gmail)
5) then go to the launcher
6) tap "Odex me"
7) follow the instructions
It will:
1) reboot your phone
2) odex all the system staying on a black screen or on the Google screen a bit longer than normally (but it's normal)
3) put a ".odex" file with each app in /system/app
4) reboot again
5) go back to home
--> You will then see your boost in smoothness!
For people who are not convinced: check that: http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...e-difference-between-odexed-and-deodexed-roms
To see if it worked:
- Go to /system/app folder and see if there is a ".odex extension" for each system apk.
I attached the apk to this thread for ease of use.
Please write here your tests, opinions, questions, and thank Paul (and me for giving you this info ) for this wonderful and simple apk.
P.S. Please read reports from other users in the thread before trying the apk as some users seem to loose their status bar if they set transparency effects or some of them are having "force closes" if the rom they are using is too much themed...
P.S.2. Pay attention please, as androidphone2012 intelligently noticed, this apk can only odex *.apk files. The system framework is not odexed by it. To odex the framework too, please use the following script instead. It odexes *.apk files and Framework *.jar files too.
--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2278586
If you already ran the apk to odex apk files, do not flash that zip: re-flash your ROM, GApps and MODs you're using and then flash the zip.
For your information, I tested the CM10.1 zip from the thread on my AOKP latest nightly build version and it worked flawlessly.
Looks cool. Nothing is attached to your post though.
Can I use it on other devices? (Galaxy si900)
I don't think this works. It rebooted and when I booted back and checked, there were no .odex files in the /system/app folder. Has anyone else got it working?
FYI, tested on 4.0.4 stock deodexed ROM.

So apparently I spoke to soon...
The app ran this time but after the reboot and odex process, my SystemUI wouldn't load and I ended up with no notification bar up top or any soft-keys at all. Also it was back to stock wallpaper. Not sure what happened, it looked like everything went through fine but I guess my SystemUI is borked.
Recovering from backup now...
I am not sure what caused this issue. I did have modded soft-keys and battery icon however, but I don't see why this would matter if a lot of the custom ROMs have modded soft-keys anyway. I would like to point out this was on stocked deodexed 4.0.4 ROM. If this works for anyone else, I would surely like to know. MAKE SURE you backup before trying.
Thank you Flolep
It works great for me, but I don't know why Gmail disappeared. But it's still in /system/app, so I tried to install and I get this : Application not installed

It's a system app so you can't "install" it. It has to be flashed into the ROM. I have a feeling this app is not exactly the most reliable in working with all the apks.

Well. I didn't have any problem with it... Gmail was still there and my framework and system ui didn't have any problem after reboot...
I tried with modaco 4.0.4 rom that is near stock 4.0.4 deodexed rom and I tried with heavily customized aokp latest aokp build 25 rom, configured for my needs, battery percent, toggles, navigation controls in blue, etc, etc, and all worked seamlessly...
I add to first thread to do a nandroid backup before launching the process.

I will keep in view for this app until more success cases reported
But I definitely will try after back from my vacation, wouldn't risk to brick my device on a trip ;p
I finally found the problem...
I forgot that the custom ROM I'm using needs a sort of modded Gapps pack to be install via CWM.
I think here is the issue.
Worked fine for me. GSM GN on AOKP B25. Just make a backup in cwm before you do it. Worst case scenario: it boot loops, you pop the battery, boot into recovery and restore.
Do you know the muffin man?
need to wipe n install b25 from m3....it's worth..?

Is this method result in something different to removing apps with titanium backup?

No.
It's just quicker to have a script nuke them all, but, with TiBu, you could make a backup BEFORE nuking.

Unpack stock rom's system.rfs (choose yours service-provider-wise from samfirmware) using Magic ISO, deodex them and copy over using root explorer setting correct permissions and owner (644, root:root).
Its a feature from samsung roms, so might be a bit harder

Actually voetbalremco may be right. While moving SamsungApps (the store) is trivial - all it requires is the touchwiz framework from stock rom, Samsung Social Hub is probably too deeply integrated in the rom itself. Not saying it can't be done, but it would require lots of trial and error, not mentioning the time needed.
but what about on cm9 is it working?because in samsung S3 rom(based on CM9) by shiftyhungary it includes SNS apps and a working S3 launcher.
