[Q] Why is the video so much worse than the iphone 4? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

so tonight i played around with my SGS2 and an iphone 4. the picture quality seems to be comparable, on the screen at least, but once switched onto video mode-the iphone 4 wins hands down. the iphone's quality is so much more clean and crisp, where as my sgs2's color is really faded and blurry looking. i had another sgs2 for a few days, and that one was worst in video. the youtube videos i've seen are really nice quality, but mine is nothing like this. any thoughts anybody? TIA.

Are you sure? This was shot with T-Mobile SGS2 and it looks awesome

What class SD card do you use? Also, I have recorded a couple of videos myself and look look pretty awesome as well...

Lol. Your phone is either crappy or you can't use the settings. The video on the SGS2 is amazing. In many reviews, it was rated to be better than the iphone 4 and on par with the 4s.

i didn't really change any of the original settings, i even press the reset tab under settings-thought it would help, but no. any suggestions on the settings?
my current sgs2 is my 2nd one already, cuz the previous one has focusing issues during video.

Low light gives the sgs2 trouble. You must adjust the white balance and not use auto. For instance I recorded some flames at a Vegas show w with daylight and it turned out much better than washed out white that it would've been.

i'll give that a try tomorrow, but i just thought all those nice videos on youtube is shot out of the box with factory settings, no!? btw, anyone know the minimum focusing distance is for the video mode? mine just don't seem to be in focus with close up subjects, like about 12" away.

Put Avatar on your SD card and watch the scene about 42 minutes in, and then come tell us what you think. Your iPhone will cry!

Download Handbrake (a free MP4 converter) for Mac or PC, rip a few of your DVD's to your desktop, and then drag the MP4 files to your SD card. Hope that helps.

Camera quality sucks compared to iphone

I travel and use my phone to scan documents, and my camera is suppose to be better than the iphones, it sucks, there is no way I get as good an image as my friends iphone does, whats the problem?
Actually closer to useless as a scanner.

My camera take pics just fine..maybe you need to look in some settings, but if that's too difficult I'm sure someone would gladly trade you their iPhone. Cause that phone is useless indeed.
Ps.- bashing the phone in the section its in probably isn't a good idea. Most ppl here like their phone and calling it useless might make them less inclined to help you

bashing the camera yes, not the phone, yes I am rooted running stock rom, I have not messed much with the settings, have you tried taking a picture of a document and see how good of a scan you get?
I will look at the setting, but I have my doubts that I will ever get as good an image as the iphone.
Seriously HTC get it together, I should not have to carry an additional scanner.

You should mess with the settings or you're just not getting a good picture.
What app are you using? or are you just taking pictures and uploading them?
I have both the iphone 3GS and my Inc 2. I also have access to an iphone 4 and 4S and I have to say that the inc 2 camera is on par with the 4S camera which is supposed to have the best optics out of all the iphones.
I can post up results too if you like? Are you sure your lens isn't smudged? or possibly defective?
IPhone 4s and dinc2 both have 8mp cameras bro. Adjust your settings I know that when I was running stock 8mp wasn't the default

So your saying I got screwed on my brand new phone.
I am not using any program just taking a picture, after all that's what my buddy does with his phone.
Maybe I will go by the Verizon store and see if the phone they have does better than mine.
My buddy had the iphone 4, and now has the 4S, and I have to say the document picture taken with the Dinc is no good at all.
I will post pics.

yes post results of pictures of a document under normal lighting conditions, also of an object with normal/low lighting conditions with both the dinc2 and i4s, I would like to see that.
I really like this phone but I have to agree with the OP, it's difficult to get a good photo in doors with this phone, I got better pictures with my HD2!

I have not compared the quality of pictures, just images of documents, if I am trying to focus binoculars, of cameras, I focus on trying to read something, but in this case I need the documents to mail them in PDF format after printing them.
I'd have to agree that the iphone 4s does have better picture quality. It is newer hardware after all. The dinc2 camera works perfectly for me though. You have to remember it's a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone.

To be honest you're never going to get the quality of a scanner from your phone, and indoor lighting is generally terrible as shown here.
I'll take a pic using the iphone 4S tonight and post it. I'm going to redo all 3 that way we can have a test with similar variables.

I see the difference in the 3GS, better than the Dinc also.
I tried some scanner software but the quality was the same as a regular picture.

I think you need to adjust your metering in settings. I'm able to do that on cm7 not sure if its an option with the stock camera app, but the consensus is that the sense camera is better than the aosp camera. When metering mode is changed from center weighted to frame average on cm7 i get no focal spot blur like i do in a shot with center weight metering.
Maybe someone with a sense camera can chime in on what metering options are available with it but changing that might help your focal blur on documents
Center weighted. Text blur near top

You tell me what you think.

Some cons about the Galaxy S2x and the Android OS.

Have been using it for 2 weeks and runs it under Mobilicity. Everything works fine with a little bit issues. Generally speaking it's a great phone.
Cons:
1. When I go to somewhere that has no coverage and come back to somewhere that has coverage. The phone keeps stay in roaming. I have to reboot it in order to make phone calls. (i think that has to do with my carrier mobilicity)
2. Too many useless apps built in, mainly t-mobile apps. Forcing me to learn how root phones and delete them... Not a very pleasant experience though.
3. The phone doesn't naturally support tethering because tmobile locks it. You have to root it and freeze or uninstall the ''tethering manager'' for tethering.
4. Poor video qualities (HQ) when watching youtube compares to my iphone 4S. When both of them in full brightness, the Hercules' brightness is dimmer and blurrier. However, this issue doesnt appear in my other video apps such as PPS.
5. Laggy front camera. Maybe it has to do with the cpu, when i try to take pictures using the front camera, it's laggy enough to make you don't want to use it anymore...*
6. No physical home key. It's kinda annoying when you are cutting fruits and always accidentally touch the sensitive home key then have to restart the game again.
7. Too ''round''. I don't get it why tmobile will make a custom designed phone that relatively uglier than many other new galaxy phones such as galaxy infuse or even the original s2. I personally can stand the plastic case, but not really with the round shape.
8. The music app. I don't know if this is because i came from iOS, but I am really having a hard time getting used to the music app of the phone. I can't change the volume as precise as i want. There is certain ''level'' i have to choose(1,2,3..) I don't really enjoy it because sometimes it's either too loud or too quiet. Another thing is that it will be quite laggy when you try to drag the little circle to a specific part of a song you want to listen.
9. Not many languages are supported. Unlike iphone which has most of the languages installed, this phone only comes with 7 or 8 languages. Korean is the only asian language supported.10.
Lastly, why everything is in a BLACK background color???????? Whether in email, music or settings it's ALL BLACK background! It will be much much nicer if we can change the background color. (yeah i kniw it can save some battety, but....)
Oh one more thing.......With it's 1.5GHz processor, why is the benchmark score still lower than Galaxy s2. I got around 2500 in average for 4 times testing. Whereas galaxy s2 can get around 300.

Um you most have the tmobile version if you have to many bloatware apps im assuming the telus version has only 1 bloatware app.
Tethering isn't free on any carrier. Iphone you either need to pay or jailbreak your phone.
Um the sg2 has to be one of the brightest phone i owned. You need to raise the brightness maximum in display settings and uncheck auto adjust screen power. My friend has the iphone4s and his brightness pales in comparison he said. It doesn't look as good because its a lower resolution to the iphone4 but the colors look much better on the samsung galaxy s2
Front camera is not laggy. You may need to get that checked out. Might be defective.
Physical keys are dead with android and capacitive will be to. Only virtual keys on home screen it will be worse for you then in the future with an android device.
Design is preference wont argue with you there.
Music has dsp manager built in. When your in the music app press settings sound effects and equalizer customize how you want. For best sound quality.
That to i like a choice to choose background colors buts that's alright.
You score lower because Qualcomm processor is weaker than the exynos processor. But gets better connectivity to data services also capable of faster speeds. Apparently by anandtech are phone has better browser peformance than
standard exynos sg2.
Wow! ... all of that sounds a bit off, most of what's described seems like software issues that can be easily fixed once rooted
Reception wise this phone is waaaay better than any other phone I've used before
no problem picking up signal on its own on Wind

This all just sounds like your personal wants aren't satisfied. Almost everything you mentioned is because "you" don't like it. Sounds to me like android was not meant for you my friends. Rooting is super simple on this device. Camera issue may just be your device and quadrant? Really? That's an issue?

Phone can be used as is with any issues. Personally while you sound like you have complaints it sounds like your quite happy with the phone as you are able to do what you want not what someone else wants.
Reason why Android OS is mostly black for its been proven that darker screens help save battery life.. is there truth to that I don't know.. Run a phone with all white and see.
Personally I love the fact that you can root an Android phone and do as you damn well please!

i dont know about your carrier and if you have phone insurance, but for t-mobile if you have insurance, a problem with the camera would be covered and you could get a replacement..regardless of where you bought it (from a retailer or a 3rd party, ebay/craiglist etc..)...insurance follows the line not the device
---------- Post added at 02:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:20 AM ----------
you are entitled to your opinion, however, it seems like a lot of the "cons" you have are nitpicking...not real issues...people are going to find something wrong with every device...but the overwhelming thought is that this phone is awesome and doesn't have any real major flaws

My front facing camera is laggier than the back also but it don't bother me.
no lag in my cameras on T989
it's practically instant shoot, non stop, just as advertised in the ICS 4.0 Galaxy Nexus event
back with the old phones i couldn't do non stop shooting, as it takes a while for the camera to react and safe file to storage
but in T989 it's so fast, like instant.
so, for those that says it's lagging, it's definitely a software issue, something other App is slowing down your phone

the front camera seems more pixelated, and the auto light condition is not as great as the back camera
otherwise it's smooth natural movements (not jittery), more than adequate for any video conferencing chat
my old Nexus S was jittery (lag) using the front camera

No point in streaming 720p or 1080p unless you have plugged your phone into an HDTV: the phone only has 480 lines of resolution. Waste of bandwidth.
on top of that, our 3G / 4G in Canada is extremely slow compared to other places

would you recommend this phone?

Tomorrow T-Mobile is having a sale and I have been thinking about dropping Sprint due to the price and poor service for a while. This seems to be the perfect opportunity. I have narrowed it down to either the S2 or Amaze I am having a hard time deciding. I have been reading some negative things about the S2 having screen color issues and artifacts and it being not up to the same level as the other variants.
With your experience with this phone would you recommend it or not? Also does it play mkv videos like the other Galaxy S II variants?
Coming from the Sensation...then returning the Amaze, the S2 is all over those two phones.
What about the issues like the low dpi and artifacts on the screen? Also can it play mkv videos out of the box? I have an evo 3D on sprint and I love that phone and was thinking to stick with HTC since Sense UI is so nice. I'm having a hard time deciding. I also read that it has issues producing accurate colors.

The resolution is not an issue and the screen issues are in my opinion over exaggerated. I'm not saying it isn't there but you have to look for it. Its really apparent in a dark room with the brightness all the way down.
I still think this screen is gorgeous. The colors are really vibrant.
Not to sure about the videos but I will definitely recommend this phone. Give it a shot and if you don't like it return it and get the amaze. I'm sure the amaze isn't a bad phone but this phone is just phenomenal not as buggy and troublesome as the Sensation was.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I have seen the lines and blotches on my screen, but only after reading about it on here. Its probably something you would never notice with normal use. I would definitely recommend this phone. Keep in mind coming from sprint that t-mobile's definition of "unlimited" includes soft data caps.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I came from the epic. Only thing I don't like is the data throttling but the 4G is something you'd never see on sprint.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Also, yes mine plays mkv fine. It also plays flac and is divx certified.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Absolutely.
After wrestling over it, I decided to get this phone over the Galaxy Nexus. I was ready to get one, but I told myself I will never pay $700 plus for a phone again, even though I almost did it. Then the no sd slot thing, blah. This phone will be fine till S3
The data cap isn't a problem. I barely use 600mb the most. What i like is the much lower bill.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
The phone is amazing but network much worse for me than Sprint. I had original EVO then Photon, neither even close to GS2 in all but call drops. I drop about 20% of my calls on Tmo and only dropped about 5 during a year and a half with Sprint.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I live in nyc and the coverage seems good. I can't get a sprint signal in my apt but my friend has 5 bars with tmobile. Also 4G on sprint is an absolute joke since I barely get to use it and when on the battery drains. With tmobile I will be able to save at least $40 a month and that's a lot.
I bought this phone after having played with both the amaze and the sgs2 . I was stuck on the amaze. But i decided to go with the sgs2 because i felt sense would kill off the need for some of my widgets.
By this phone root and rom it . Done !!!!!??

I use handbrake to encode dvd to mkv. Movies look stunning on this using that encoding software and mkv format. Even with dice player and other so called mkv apps, my sensation didn't look this good.

I would definitely recommend it if your headed to T-Mobile. Minor issues with the screen but they are definitely not notable unless I'm using the phone in the dark, and for me the graininess is preferable to the bleed through on the Amaze. Other than that the phone has Web perfect. Fast, smooth and bright!

I just upgraded from the Vibrant and got the gs2 yesterday. I love this phone. I have to say I did notice the screen lines and discoloration when I was reading at night with the brightness set at auto. During the day it's fine. I was set on waiting for the Galaxy Nexus to come for tmo, but there still hasn't been an announcement and besides the 720p and ics, the gs2 seems to beat it specs wise.
I switched from Sprint a few months ago because of lack of 4G and diminishing 3G speeds (200k). I was pulling 5mbps on the vibrant and now I'm getting 11-15mbps consistently with the gs2.

I got the galaxy s II and the Amaze for the other line. I feel the Amaze has a much better quality screen and although smaller you can see more of a webpage with it. The galaxy s has some huge text and looks like it is zoomed in. The screen also looks bluish.
The t-mobile service is so far much better than I had with sprint. I can all bars in my home unlike sprint where I got none and the network is so much faster. My bill is also cut b $40.00 or more so I couldn't be happier.
I didn't realize the galaxy has no notification light unlike the amaze and the dedicated camera buttons would have been nice. I wonder if i can return it for an exchange?
Edit. Exchanged it for the HTC Amaze. Much happier with this phone with the notification light, dedicated camera buttons and the screen looks much better. Thanks for the help.

Disappointed in the Galaxy Nexus

Ok so I have a Galaxy S II for AT&T and I wanted to get the Galaxy Nexus for the hardware acceleration, HD screen, and new OS so I went to Verizon today to check it out. Here is what really turned me off to the phone:
1) YouTube videos are still blurry or pixelated even though the video was in HD. The videos looked better on my phone.
2) The browser is choppy and stuttery. I went to a blog with portraits on wordpress and the Nexus was very stuttery and was not smooth like my GSII. My GSII scrolled down and up the page fine with no lag, buttery smooth.
3) The screen isn't as nice as I thought. My GSII has a lower resolution but it didn't appear that much different to me when comparing. For pictures anyways it seemed like the pictures were soft and when I compared them to my phone I couldn't tell that much of a difference.
Just my take on it. I'm disappointed because I was going to buy the phone on eBay and I was a proponent for the phone but in the end I was let down. Even more happy with my GSII now.

Ever think that the slowed performance could be caused by a bunch of people fondling the phone all day? Also display models are chock full of crap...just a thought

Had an SGSII International on ATT.
Couldn't eBay it fast enough ($500) three weeks ago after my GNEX arrived.
Different strokes, I guess. Touchwiz and low resolution is for the birds.

did you ever stop and think that the videos you see on youtube on your gs2 that look better and native 480p and the ones you watch that are 480p on the nexus might not look as good as the 720p videos on the nexus. big big difference.
It's likely the Youtube was set to low quality. My screen looks stunning. I upgraded from a Thunderbolt which had a decent screen of it's own, but this is lightyears beyond better.
The video I watched was crisp, clear, and had that HD "3d" effect you will see on high quality screens.
The browser is the most responsive I've seen on a phone yet.
The phone has quirks (choppy in some areas), but to say the screen is a reason for concern is beyond my comprehension.

It was 720p, I know because I watched a video I uploaded. Maybe it wasn't set on high quality.

Go to Martisphotography.wordpress.com and scroll through and see if it's stuttery. It was when I tried it.

I'm running ICS'd Out with a ICS theme. I paid 96 cents for my gsii. I'd have to spend $700 for the GN.

I have stutter when scrolling down after the site fully loaded. Back up was smooth.
With the exception of the HD screen (and ICS) isn't the gs2 better in hardware?

GSII has a slightly better GPU, but the TI Omap has proven to be a beast. That's the only thing the GSII has over the Nexus (and maybe the browser in the GSII)

people are forgetting that the Galaxy Nexus isn't the "new" flagship phone from samsung. the galaxy nexus is the "new" flagship for the Nexus line of phones. The galaxy SII is still the flagship for the Galaxy S line of phones. they both have their pro's and con's, but it is only worth buying if you are coming from a last gen phone rather than a current flagship.

Try it when it's loading the page. I went to the site and started scrolling while the pictures are loading. Did it on the GN and GSII, a lot of stutter on the GN, none on the GSII.
I really want the HD screen but I think I'll just sell my GSII and get the GSIII when it comes out next year.

Seriously.....I went with my brother in-law 9am this morning to get this thing....its pretty damn sweet in every respect.....people can slam it all they want but one thing holds true......if you have Verizon....THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST PHONE THEY HAVE PERIOD. No other phone has the display the Nexus has....hardware is better than ANY other phone they have.....this ain't up for debate....if you PREFER something else, so be it.....but you are definitely not upgrading to anything better than this. For every bad thing you can say about this phone, I can say five about any other device in Verizon's complete gimick line up.

This. The GN and the GS2 are pretty much in the same league. If you already have a GS2 and don't care much about being on the bleeding edge of Android it's not really worth it to switch.

I kept my SGSII for two days after receiving my GSM GNEX to decide (3 weeks ago).
It was a no-brainier. I sold the SGSII as fast as I could. My thoughts, at least.

Well said. (And since I'm coming from an HTC Thunderbolt, it's safe to say the GN is an upgrade for me, haha).
All the lag issues are pretty well nullified with enabling hardware acceleration.
Did the device the op was testing actually had "Use Gpu 2d accel in apps" selected in dev options? Why all the hate?
Buy whatever you want. Or can afford.

Ditto. Bought a Nexus, the day it arrived I sold my GS2. Haven't thought once about the GS2 since giving it the boot. Nexus is the ****.

Serious questions before I make the jump??

1. I have an sgs2 if anyone has had one did you make the switch and why?
2. Is the camera really as bad as some reviews?
3. Is there a way to get the official google updates on the ones that receive it from samsung?
4. Does anyone regret their purchase ?
Any info would be much appreciated
1. My Android journey -> N1, DHD, SGS2, GNex. I made the switch purely because I was madly in love with ICS ever since seeing it on a colleague's GNex, and the improved screen resolution on the GNex. The lack of fixed capacitative buttons have made for a nice added layer of personalisation (with custom ROMs of course).
2. I've taken a few shots with the GNex and am generally satisfied. I think for day to day point-to-shoot moments, it isn't bad at all. The zero shutter lag actually helps capture "the moment" well. But yes, I do miss the superb clarity of my SGS2's pics...
3. I won't even pretend to know the answer to this one, but will instead link you to this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881
4. Hell no. Although if the rumoured Galaxy Nexus "Plus" is coming (faster OMAP4470 CPU @ 1.5GHz and 8MP cam) then I will... but this is just a rumour...

2. No. Like all cameras on phones it is fine in good light.
3. All updates are exactly the same whether they come from Google or Samsung.

Thanks guys if anyone else has anything to add I would appreciate it
2. If you focus the Nexus before you shoot, it'll take good photos. That's all it takes really. Pretty much the same with all other phones. If you dont focus, it'll take okay pictures but if you make it focus first then it'll take good photos.
3. Yes, just flash yakju on your GSM nexus then you'll be good. It worked for me.
4. No regret at all.
I just wanted to say something about the camera.
"Capturing the moment" has not really been there for me because I use a pattern lock to secure my phone so I can't go to the camera app as quick as I wanted to. So if you use any type of lock screen that is not the slide one, I wouldn't think that would be that great.
Also about the quality, I would just recommend that you get a friend or go to a store with the galaxy nexus and compare it. I personally don't take many photos so I didn't really care about the quality but I gotta say... its worse than my sgs captivate in my opinion. So I would recommend trying it out for yourself.
Overall, if I had a sgs II I wouldn't switch because that device is still a great device and it will get ics sometime in the future. I would just save my money...
That was just my own personal opinion on the whole thing. Hope you make a good decision!

I'm leaning towards the switch but I would like to actually use a unit before I make the final call so I might swing into a Verizon store and check one out.
Don't the hardware is a downgrade. The only thing it has is the screen and that's it.once the s2 gets ics it will be much faster and better

I have spent 2 days with the nexus as a replacement for my water soaked SGS2(exynos) version. Before the haters get on me, i just want to give my honest opinions.
The Nexus is not as bad as many make it out to be. It does have a great screen and does feel nice in the hand. It is also pretty responsive as well.
Things i dont like coming from an sgs2...
-camera is terrible no matter how u put it-im sorry, it just is compared to sgs2
-micro stutter are quite frequent. There is a fair bit of lag throughout the whole phone. Whether it be scolling through web pages, homescreen, gallery or contacts, it just always has a bit of lag. Not crazy lag but again, coming from an SGS2 you never saw it anywhere.
-talking to people on the phone doesnt sound as clear
-speaker is weaker
-no SD
-battery is ok but not as good (could be because i have had it only for 2 days and also might need updates)
-browsers very fast but not as smooth in scrolling, pinch to zoom or playing videos
-apps not completely compatible yet (not nexus' fault)
Again, this is just my take on what i have seen. The phone just seems like a bit of a "work in progress". Also, i think sammy really put their full attention on the sgs2 and its software when they made it.
If you have a choice between the two, definitely go for the sgs2 unless you absolutely cant wait for ICS.
I like my Nexus but...
...i hear better reviews about the Galaxy S2 (better display)
Is that true? Better or worse in other ways?
the nexus screen is sharper and larger. the sgs2 screen is more vibrant and more contrast.
Infuse > SGS2 > GNex.
When I pick up my friends SGS2 to play around with it a bit, I gladly give it back to him.
The crisper and sharper screen with the noticeably higher resolution allows ics to shine. Don't listen to those who simply down play it's screen; it's pretty much *the* fundamental component of a touch screen device.
Good luck!

I might be the only one on the planet who actually likes that it uses MTP. I like not having to worry about whether the phone or my computer has mounted the SD card while it's plugged in.

Thanks for the input but how can you say that out of those three phones the infuse is the best? That baffles me
So after reading reviews from tech crunch T3 engadget BGR etc etc I'm at 90% going for Nexus especially with the pure google experience and at least two years of updates ala nexus S rocking ICS

I don't think that was meant as "greater than" signs, but rather arrows to show his device history.

Camera quality
I had a Nexus and returned it, primarily because I didn't feel the camera quality matched my HTC Thunderbolt's (running Skyraider).
HOWEVER.
After a week without the Nexus, I got the bug to get ICS again, and all the bells and whistles that came with Samsung's device and the newest phone on the market. I use the camera for work, and after spending some time with it - I now feel it's every bit as capable as HTC's - and surpasses it in many ways. I think it was just dealing with something different that turned me off. Sure, it's 5 megapixels v. 8 ... but that's not an accurate comparison, since lens quality and picture-processing algorithms play such an important part. As others mentioned - the no-lag shutter is great, there are some fun built-in features, and video quality is outstanding. The ONLY thing I don't care for is that the photos are not in 16x9 format. That seemed odd to me, and I was discussing it with a friend who's into photography. He pointed out that the pix the Nexus is taking are in 6x4 format (I think that's right -- definitely not 4x3). He says that's an industry standard for printing photos -- that 16x9 presents a problem if you're trying to have a photo printed professionally. I'd still like the option to shoot 16x9 (if it's in there, I can't find it) -- but the camera is far better than some reviews (and my initial experience) would have you believe.

I love MTP when connected to my Win7 machine, but my netbook runs Linux, and I'm still figuring out getting MTPFS to automatically mount the phone's filesystem when I connect it. I can write a shell script to mount and unmount, but that isn't as nice as it "just working" on Windows.
