[Q] Sense not updated to 2.1 despite official 2.3.3 upgrade? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I updated my Desire from 2.29 to 2.3.3 last night. Proceeded to S-OFF and root it using Revolutionary.
Question: The Sense hasn't changed to 2.1
The interface isn't different - I was assuming 2.1 would be something like, for eg, what was portrayed in the GingerBurst ROM xda page.

In figure 2, note the icons at the bottom. However, for me, they still are how they were before: A triangle (to show the all apps menu) on the left and the plus (to add something to the screen) on the right.
In figure 3, there are apparently different sections in the all apps menu. This isn't the case with mine.
Can someone please clarify what the 'issue' is?
Many thanks.

There is no issue. Official GB release was with Sense 1.9.

Mine's f*cking brilliant!

Nobody said, that the "official" upgrade will have 2.1

Desire is awesome
and official update doesn't come with 2.1
u need to root

Gotcha... My bad, then. I thought I'd read somewhere that the 2.3.3 came with an upgraded version of Sense.
Thanks for the responses folks...

Same case as mine. I was misinformed that Desire HD will hit retail here around Christmas last year which was some 9 weeks from the moment I got mine so I decided not to wait because my previous phone malfunctioned. It came out three weeks after
SwiftKeyed from my HTC Desire using XDA App.

DHD isn't that great though.. super sh!tty battery life and same screen res as Desire so lower pixel density

not only that, DHD has a TFT-LCD screen and not an SLCD screen. HTC scammed in their specifications. I didn't realise it until my cousin got a DHD and i was wondering how come the colour is unlike what i see in Desire S and Sensation.

I was wondering why the pic looked so familiar

lol... You know what? I was stupidly waiting for the official Gingerbread update of HTC Desire. When arrived (after long long waiting) I downloaded and installed just hoping for a new interface (HTC Sense). Alas! There was nothing.
But, I am so happy for the incident. Cuz, this made me desperate to have newer version of Sense. I looked for it and discovered the way of rooting. Thats it! I rooted my device at the 9th day when HTC announced offcial GB update using Unrevoked. Then I installed custom ROM with sense 3.0 and I am enjoying. I learned a lot within these days. Currently I am using Sense 3.5
So, i suggest you to do same.
Thanks-

Same here. Before the release of the gingerbread update, I was only temp rooted with visionary+. When it finally came out and I saw the negative reviews, I rooted and flashed custom Rom the day after the update is announced.

On the contrary, they updated as much as they could. You know, all those fancy animations require additional space, which Desire lacks it. Even after deleting 3 apps and all wallpapers there is approximately 20 MB less of free space. Of course, they could upgrade Sense to full 2.1, but we would have what, 5 MB of free space? Not much usable, is it?

If I understand it right you can't root the Frojo update by using software only.
It can be done by using something like an xtc clip to get S-off, but that way is expensive £105.- +shipping to buy one.
What unrevoked does is giving us an oportunity to root using software only. But as said before 2.2.1 version in curently not supported by unrevoked

To be honest i wouldn't buy another wildfire wether its an S or the old one. Bull%^$t upgrades just to bring up the price. S is what our current wildfire should have been when it came out... And for the price it has now...
Way offtopic here sorry
So still waiting for an update from alpharev. No news yet.
I am waiting on the pricing for the incredible S. Would seem like a good upgrade if the price is good
I bought the wildfire as a starter smartphone. It has exceeded all my expectations, but I don't think I would go for another phone with such low specs as everything else is getting soo much better!

Me too
Does anyone know how can i unlock my htc wildfire with 2.2.1, because it is has a sim lock just for telenor network, but i wanna unloc it for other networks too???
please respond
Hello!
Like I said in other threads, it's a shamer not letting the customer decide what he/she wants to do with her smartphone. IF I WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS 98 ON IT, WELL THEN IT BE SO. But no, they have to block it, just so we stick with their software and can't fix thing for ourselves.
I think I speak for all when I say, next time I'm going to buy a phone which is not locked, so I can do what I want, not having to wait for someone to make a programm or hardware to make it according to be unlocked
yours truly
I can see the end of the road for my wildfire, the fire is already put out. Seen threads in the desire forum that froyo root by unrevoked but not wildfire causes frustration cos new users with latest batch handset would come with froyo.
I feel lucky enough to root my phone just in time.
So no official froyo rooting hope only check unrevoked website daily hope, or of course buy a better phone.

Technical reason for not upgrading to gingerbread if you want s-off?

OK, so we all know that if you upgrade to gingerbread OTA you'll lose the ability to s-off with alpharevx.
What we also know is that there will be a lot of people, myself included, who will begin visibly twitching when gingerbread is available and s-off isn't. i mean, here's this sexy update, full of tweaks, and we can't touch the sweet sweet goodness...
So here's my question - why? What is the technical reason behind it, and where did it come from? Did it come from alpharevx? Is it a real limitation, or is it one of those things we all "know" but isn't actually true? There's gonna be a lot of people who flash GB thinking "eh, there will be a fix for this too." On the surface of it, you gotta think there will be - new dinc2's will come with GB preinstalled at some point soon - what about those guys? xtc clip only?
well yea you can get a small fix now, and be stuck. or use the XTC clip and have goodies like this

CM7 is awesome as well. not too mention once root is around for more people, they will build some awesome ROMs. much more awesome than stock.
oh, i'm not going to be touching it, but i know many many people will.
to each their own. I thought of selling my inc2 before root. I'd rather pay $100 for root now than use a Thunderbolt. anyday.
i had used used xtc clip to get S-OFF , i am not sure if running the OTA GB update i will get a S-ON .

no it wont, nothing will..
well, both GB and S-OFF have been labelled as 'coming soon' recently. supposedly GB will start to become available this monday. as for S-OFF, its still TBA. I guess it just depends on you. I used to have an HTC HD2 and the best thing I ever did for it was load custom ROMs.
i've got zero interest in the thunderbolt. i think this is the best phone on VZ, right now. i'd much rather run CM7 or another rom five minutes after alpha is released than have GB now and then have to potentially wait longer.
i'm on the alpharev chat now, and it sounds like the reason is the exploit being used requires froyo - it's patched in gingerbread. i get the sense that if this were 2.3.4, we could use gingerbreak, but in 2.3.3, it's not gonna fly.

From what I understand 2.3.4 wouldn't help make gingerbreak possible since the exploit used by gingerbreak was explicitly patched already in RUU's that have leaked. If they've got it patched in 2.3.3 there's no reason it wouldn't also be patched in 2.3.4. Once security holes are found (and bottom line, yes, gingerbreak is a security hole) and patched they aren't re-opened on purpose.

you're a MOD?
I know this is a tad late now, but I'll give a real technical reason not to hit the GB leaks.
Once you S-OFF you can load a rooted version of the GB leaks and have the best of both worlds. You can't root the GB leak right now, but someone can take the leak, remove the locks, repackage it, and release it so that it's available with root access. This requires S-OFF and will not work for S-ON users at all.
So you have to ask: Do I want the GB leak or do I want a rooted GB leak?

If it supports your phone, it will be an over the air update when its released sometime next month.

But Desire won't get any updates, only custom ROM (hopefully).
You probably own an HTC Desire since you posted this question here... then you'll have to wait just like the rest of us for our awesome developers to port the ROM over.
We are not gonna get any over the air update since HTC ended their support for our device already.

Well it released Feb last year, but I agree that HTC really messed up with the Gingerbread update, Desire owners deserved that one done properly.
As for ICS, can't really expect HTC to support the Desire that far... it'd be the third major update.

Because it wasn't released as a normal, OTA update. Instead, HTC released a very late, buggy version via their website, and so your average desire owner probably doesn't even know a GB update exists.
That's because with OTA they couldn't delete content from system. And it ain't more buggy than FroYo, in fact it's less buggy than FroYo.

Sure, it's less buggy than froyo, but you would expect that, really. Some of the bugs that I really thought would be addressed were still present.
And you can't deny that when a manufacturer releases an update that has warnings and disclaimers on it, it hasn't been done quite as smoothly as Samsung/Apple.
Because of memory constraints (duh!).
No chance of ics on HTC desire unless ported thru custom Rom
If HTC will remove gapps, then it will be easily possible, even if with old Sense.
Rooted and get an custom ROM will give you ice cream earlier. Forget HTC.
Doubt very much if we will see ICS on Desire...
ICS is optimised for dual-core and also features virtual keys. There is already speculation on the Sensation boards whether they will see the update, due that device using soft keys.
I imagine HTC will tweak ICS to run on Sensation, but can't see them adapting to Desire. Too many deficiencies to be addressed.
Hoping our awesome devs will be able to at least port various bits and pieces from Android 4.0 for us to enjoy, though!!

Well we will probably, just that we won't see it from HTC as they dropped support for Desire.
Because ICS will essentially work with any phones that can run Gingerbread (not just dual-core). And apparently ICS checks if your device have hardware keys or not, if there is, they will not display the virtual keys. And i can't really see Google being so stupid to only restrict ICS to phones without hardware keys as there are essentially no other phones besides the galaxy nexus that do not have hardware keys.
Also, we already have a port of ICS SDK, here. Its not usable or perfect, but at least it proves that the Desire can run ICS.

The Desire HD is a must have phone, especially for the its current price on the market! Battery isnt fantastic but custom ROMs fix that and if you're not too much of a tech junkie where you have a must have need for all the latest tech, then I'd definitely suggest the DHD!
To be honest I've had my DHD since it's release and it has proved to be reliable, stable & just plain brilliant! Battery on stock ROM's are a mixed bag but easily fixed by flashing a new ROM (don't go for Sense unless you like pretty stuff, it uses fair chunk of battery 'cause of the animations), camera is decent (although lack of front facing camera can be dissapointing at times), screen is, again, brilliant (AMOLED & LED are just gimmicks to be honest), speaker is a little tinny (only REAL dissapointment on the whole phone).

That looks like a decent run. Near water too, so I assume less traffic fumes. What's the reason you use the GPS when running? (Speed, time?) The line is a little jagged. We didn't want to say, but you do kind of wobble when you run.
Maybe the water or buildings somehow throw the GPS off.
Back on topic: If a Desire HD is a decent step-up from your current phone and the price is much lower than 18 months ago, then there's no reason to shy away from getting one, in my opinion. I still value mine.

In a press event held in Taiwan today where HTC unveiled the upgraded versions – HTC One X+ and HTC One S Special Edition, general manager of HTC North Asia, Mr Jack Tong revealed to the press that starting tomorrow HTC One X users in Asia will receive Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware upgrade, while HTC One S users a little bit later (hasnt specified an exact date).
The software upgrade will also bring HTC‘s newest UI (user interface) HTC Sense 4+ beside the new Android version. This is good news for all HTC One X and One S users although HTC hasnt said a word about a global JellyBean rollout yet.
Getting back to One X+ and One S SE these upgraded models should hit Asian shelves around October 30, no world about other markets.

I said it was the CID of Indian version, we have to wait until the OTA was released.
So the update is currently rolling out in Asia? Or is that just a bull**** editorialised title? This info could have just been added to the current JB thread (in fact I think it was), no need for a whole new thread.

I don't think we will get it today, the 26th. According to that source, it would begin rolling out in Asia. So lets assume that is Taiwan, they have only 6 hours left before it's the 27th and the working day is already over.
So I think we have to wait a little longer.

I know htc is a smaller company but surely focusing more on customer support would give them a good reputation and help boost sales... I for one would pay more for a handset from a company that responded well to customer feedback..! And yet again another rumour about an ota being released but no one has gotten it...! Do the HTC reps just talk crap to get headlines...???

Ok, I think that the name of this thread should be change immediately as it's causing confusion. As I know the JB hasn't started rolling out and this is inadequate name for a thread.
