[Q] Recoveries - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My first question is, why does the Incredible need two recoveries? When I came from my other phone, Amon Ra was far superior to CWM and it appears the same with the Incredible, so why do the Devs design everything to work with CWM? Next question is what's the difference? They both are suppose to do wipes, flashes, backups, restores etc etc..so why would one work when dealing with certain ROMs and the other would not?

It dosen't need two, but choice is good.
There isnt much difference. Cwm is easier to navigate, and has a few more options than amon. Also cwm is needed for rom manager which is a pretty popular app.
Both amon and cwm should work with all roms or mods, but since most devs use cwm when building their mods and roms they sugest you use it too because that way they know it should work since thats their setup. I know the fresh roms for the evo require amon ra for their updater app.

Actually CWM is prevalent over AmonRa on the Incredible...that's why devs design for that. AmonRa is there, yes, but CWM is what (at least as far as I know, I could be wrong, I don't speak for anyone but myself) most people use. Just look at signatures. Most say their recovery is CWM 3.x or 5.x.

I see what you're saying. I never had luck with Rom Manager, and I did use CWM for a while but to me Amon Ra has more options and is way faster. I would think for noobs that CWM would be better. When I first rooted my first phone I used the crap out of Rom Manager lol. Now I don't use that app. Thanks for the input though.

Clockwork Recovery

Was the clockwork recovery image built specifically for this or is it the same one used for the mytouch/g1/nexus ect?
Wondering just because I prefer to use Amonra's Recovery on my G1 and the Mytouch regular I have.
So basically wanted to know if I could use this on the Mytouch Slide too.
Wondering before I flash and accidentally brick it for doing something before making sure others think it is okay.
You actually CANNOT flash a new recovery, the only known method for changing the recovery is through the ENG-BUILD. Amon Ra's were built specifically for each device though.
I guess it would be POSSIBLE in THEORY to boot another recovery the same way we boot Clockwork, but you'd have to ask Eugene that.

What do I do now?

Okay, first timer here and I have a few questions. I just completed rooting my phone via Simple Root. My build number is now 1.17.651.1.
My questions are as follows:
1) Now that I am rooted, what installation files can I delete from my SD Card?
2) I see that I need to do a recovery flash, do I do this immediately? What one do you recommend?
3) After I do the flash, are there any others files I need to install before I do a custom rom?
4) Which custom rom do you recommend?
5) Am I leaving anything else out that I forgot?
Thank you so much in advance!

After you have rooted you can delete nearly anything you want, I wouldn't suggest doing it because I doubt you know what to do. But you do have the freedom to..
I would suggest you flash a recovery as soon as possible. It makes life easier. The two most common recovery are Amon Ra And clockwork.. I use amon Ra just because it had a better wipe feature but clockwork is used in rom manAger (look in to it).
After rooting you can look into upgrading your radio and your wimax and your kernal.
Custom roms are like sneakers, They all have different purpose and size. The most common ones are damagedcontrol and fresh. Do your research and experiment and find your sneaker. You can also just wait til the official stable cm6 comes out. For now I use fresh.
Try oUt some themes and different apps that are for rooted devices only. And there us always something neiw to do with your evo.

I am in the same boat as OP. I managed to make my way through SimpleRoot. But I am having a heck of a time digging through the forums to figure out what to do next. I feel like kind of an idiot, but I have no idea how to set up my backup/recovery "amon ra" right? And then I'd like to install the rooted 1.47 build and update my radio and wimax. Any direction would be VERY appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. Mind pointing me in the right direction for the radio kernel and wimax?
I'm new to this too. Read up a lot first. Easy root looks to make it pretty easy, but I learned more doing it the hard way. Used the two part method in dev section, by toast I think, with adb, nand unlock and all. Helps to understand the odd file structure, and what different parts do. You have to try things too, and just hope you don't f up. Using cm6 now and its pretty cool. Have fun man.

Liked he said read. And do a lot of it. Last thing you want is to brick your phone

What's wrong with Clockwork's wipe feature?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734564&highlight=clockwork
Also, as for flashing a recovery, if you install ROM Manager from the market, it will give you an option to flash either Clockwork or Amon RA. It will stay there even if you flash new ROMs later, though there's a quirk where a new ROM Manager install will ask you to flash recovery, but then if one is already there it won't really change it, it just needs to see it to believe it.
Installing new files won't make a difference if you switch ROMs. It wipes your data when you re-flash, so you'll lose it all anyway (unless you back up your apps with Titanium Backup or MyBackup). All you need is a recovery installed - and I actually recommend Clockwork, but only because I use it myself and I have no problems with it - and you can reboot into it, install a new ROM, and start playing. I've never flashed from ROM Manager, even though it gives the option, but I imagine it does the same thing, but runs it automatically after a recovery reboot.
Read the "favorite ROM" thread with the poll attached, lots of good ROM recommendations in there. I'll say it once more: I'm using Fresh 1.0.1 and netarchy's 3.7.3c kernel (Fresh-compatible version). It's so fast and smooth.
If you like your current setup but want to try a new ROM, use ROM Manager (or Clockwork as a recovery reboot) to do a Clockwork backup. That way you can return to your current state if you want to. It's basically a system image that you can restore.
Here's one helpful page to start with.
And have fun.
Back on fresh 0.5.3, clockwork was not doing a great job with the wipe, causing the boot to loop. I believe it wasn't completely wiping the dalik cache.

[Q] Best Recovery Image To Date

Hi friends!
Please, can anyone tell me what recovery image is the most advanced by now for HTC Desire (HBOOT .83). I mean which recovery is pimped with all that useful features that exist right now. Thank you.
Sorry to create this topic, but can't find...
I would like this question answering too.
I've always preferred the AmonRA recovery port personally, though some people will recommend ClockworkMod as well. Both can be flashed permanently through unrevoked so there's no need to keep a zip file on the SD card all the time. Why not try both of them out and decide for yourself? They're both pretty equal
Unrevoked : http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ (installs ClockworkMod recovery by default but you can choose what you want before plugging the phone in)
AmonRA recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721792
I've also seen some recoveries with PSFreedom built in but I guess that's only useful if you've got a PS3.
Moved to Q&A. Please do not post question threads in the Development forum.

Thanks for your reply!
You know, actually, I already used RA and Clockworkmod.
Right now I prefer RA, cause Clockwork's doesn't have proper implementation to work with ext-file system. So... it's seems to me that RA is more complex.
Clockwork does a bit more when used with ROM Manager I think. All depends on if you want to do things within Android or the old skool way

[Q] Is it safe for me to use Clockwork? If not, what next?

So I got my Evo in November. I was lucky enough to get HW003, so back in Nov, I used Unrevoked (and Forever, I think?). It looks like it all went fine, 4G has been working and I'm fully root'ed. Now I'm ready to jump over to Fresh, but I'm reading these threads about problems with Clockwork. I feel dumb, but I'm a little confused now. Is it safe for me to continue using Clockwork, as installed by Unrevoked? Or do I need to jump over to Amon Ra before I start doing anything? If that's the case, is there a best way to do that? Thanks in advance.
Baseband: 2.15.00.09.01
Software: 3.29.651.5
PRI: 1.77_003
PRL: 60671
H_BOOT: .97
You'll be fine using clockwork. The only problem with clockwork is that it occasionally doesn't clear cache and dalvik perfectly. I've been rooted and using CW for a LONG time. Trust me, it's safe
Cw is safe enough (although most probably use ar), but make sure you have at least one backup done with ar. Cw doesn't back up your wimax image. Ar does, and you may need it someday.

ClockworkMod is not safe if you were to (accidentally) upgrade your hboot. Best to just stick with Amon_RA anyways, since it works properly.
(And to be honest, if you need ROM Manager to flash ROMs, you probably shouldn't have rooted your phone in the first place.)
Thanks guys. Looks like I may as well just move forward with Amon Ra.

The partitions on newer phones is the issue. You can use clockwork if you have older hardware and older camera chip. Just upgrading hboot does not change your partition sizes. I have gone from hboot 0.97 to 2.10 and back down to 0.76 with a launch day evo and partitions stayed the same.
If clockwork worked on your phone before it will also work now. If you have a newer phone with new camera chip there is a high chance that your phone has a different partition setup than the older phones and using clockwork or even regualr Amon-Ra will equally break the phone. There is only ONE version of Amon-Ra that works for these phones and the flashable zip can be found in Zikronix's root thread for hboot 2.02 and 2.10 phones.

I used to agree with you, but not any more. For me, clockwork worked most of the time, but when the possibility is a bricked phone, most of the time is just not good enough. On the other hand, Amon_Ra works 100% of the time.
Frankly, Clockwork might be ok for flashing a rom, but I would never use it to flash radios or pri. As far as I am concerned it just doesn't work reliably enough to use it for anything important. So for me clockwork is pretty much useless. The only reason I keep it on my phone is that I paid five bucks for it, and it is the most convenient way to fix permissions.
For the record, I have had my 002 Evo since launch day. Rooted it using the original toast method. The first app I bought was Clockwork, which I used exclusively for about a month. After the second time a flash through clockwork went bad, I switched to Amon_Ra and have never had a bad flash since. Additionally, a nand backup through Amon_Ra backs up your RSA keys, Clockwork does not.
Ive always like Amon Ra better, only time I used Clockwork was to flash Amon Ra lol

If you want to switch to RA an easy way is to download Rom Manager from the market. There is an option in the app to flash to RA. After that, you can just uninstall Rom Manager since it only works with CW.

[Q] Fresh's 4.0 beta

So I downloaded it and love it. But it won't let me access my recovery when my phone is off and I hold power and the down volume anymore. Any suggestions?

what recovery are you on?
I use clockwork. What happened was I thought I used mybackup pro to download all the apps but I think I just backed up the data. So I wanted to flash back to sprint lovers and use it to re back up the apk + data. Anyway, I just backed up the Fresh rom through clockwork and I'm pretty sure I can flash back to SL from there too, right?

Yes you can, I personally don't use clockwork but I think when running the 2.3 GB beta it might not work correctly with recovery thats not up to date. I use amon ra 2.3 it works for me; are you on clockwork 3.0?
I'm on the most updated one, so yes 3.0, I haven't tried amon ra yet but I've heard a lot of people prefer that over clockwork. I'm in the process of restoring my SL rom so I'll keep you updated. Thank you for the quick responses
No problem, yes I prefer amon ra myself but its the users choice. If you still can't get in recovery I'd say try it on amon ra for the fresh beta then go back to clockwork. Only thing about switching recoveries is that you can't restore backups from one recovery to another!
I've never booted up or flashed through clockwork so this was new to me. I've always done it the old fashioned way I guess. This is a lot easier. I've read a bit on the differences with amon ra and clockwork, but it's always better to get perspective from a user. So why did you chose amon ra over clockwork?

Lol well lets just leave it at personal preference. Its said that clockwork has trouble wiping dalvik/cache at times, and other random issues and since my g1 days back in 2008 I've always ran with amon ra. There's other reasons why I will NEVER run clockwork but I think ill keep those to myself lol. Wouldn't want to start drama around here
edit: dirty beat me to it.

clockworkmod can be controlled by rom manager, which is helpful for noobs, and is a bit cleaner, but cant read amend scripting. amend is much easier to write, and more widely known. most flashable zips are written in amend, because it's more flexable and everything. only a few big roms are written in edify. amon-ra can read both amend and edify. so it's much easier for me and other minor/learning developers to write in amend.
I apologize, that's what I meant I was doing. I'm using Rom Manager to flash. I've had my Evo since October and just rooted it about a week ago when I got my Xoom. I'm very noobish still and still learning the programs for rooting.

You'll need to turn off fast boot in the settings. When that's on, the phone doesn't completely shut off.

hahah if you do it right you will. post a question in the dev section, or without searching first, or jsut a dumb question.... here's what you get. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047664 lol
Lol, I tried a search for it and the only thread that came up was the dev one, since I just joined I couldn't post there and came here. So even if I end up with a bad experience down the road, first impression was a very good one
