[Q] Does the Galaxy Nexus have native video call support over 3G network? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does this device have video call over 3G network (not over 3G data, using gtalk, skype, etc.) or this funcionality is still not present in Galaxy Nexus / ICS?

Don't all phones need 3G (or 4G/WiFi) data to make video calls?

Video call = 3G network, not using your 3G data plan.
Skype etc = 3G data.

Which phones allow you to do that?

I thought pretty much every 3G phone has been able to do this since 2004? At least in the UK...?

If you're talking Android, then Samsung phones can.
Also tonnes of other non-Android 3G phones, the technology has been around for around 10 years in the UK now, vaguely remember the huge brick video phones that were first on the 3 network.

Must be a UK / European thing then... I don't think I've heard of that before.. every time I've done a video call its been with either Skype or FaceTime or some other service like that. Never done it over the carrier voice network.. always over 3G Data or WiFi

My Samsung Galaxy S can do these video calls over 3G network, but Nexus S can not. So I was wondering if this could be a new functionality in GN or ICS...

I could do native video call on my HTC Touch Diamond 5 years ago.. or was it 4 years..? Anyway when it came out. And the techniqe has been around alot longer in Sweden..

It's not possible on Verizon, since CDMA2000 EV-DO is data only. It might be possible on AT&T, but I think I read somewhere that AT&T limits its UMTS network for data only, and uses 2G for voice.

I think it is mainly a European concept as when I bought my HTC Kaiser (TyTN II) 4 years ago it had video calling facility via the front facing camera but the American version of the same phone did not have the front facing camera.
Basically its the same as making a voice call but you would select video call from the menu instead. As long as both phones had front facing cameras and supported video calling then you could have a video conversation over the carriers network without using data but the video calls were not part of the inclusive minutes bundle and were ALOT more expensive (around 50p - 75p a minute depending on carrier). Same thing goes for the phone before that (HTC Hermes) but I never once used either phone to make a video call lol.
With the advent of Skype and Google Talk there is really no need for carrier video calls anymore, I have never seen any per minute pricing for video calls in the carriers books for years and think its pretty much dead.
Hope that explains what the OP was asking about.
Mark.

I had the Touch Pro and Diamond 2 (HTC Pure) on US AT&T way back then... and it included Video Calling over cellular. Of course I never used it because no one ever had it back then.
Even today I don't know anyone to video chat with except my gf's netbook over skype.

the Euro version of i9000 and i9000M allowed that
came with build in "face time" per say to allow video chat
my SGS2 phone dialer did not include video chat, seems like they removed the feature
so it's unclear if it's going to be supported by stock ICS

Any update on 3G video call capability?
As the Galaxy Nexus is already on the market in the United Kingdom for a few weeks, and now even in Germany, I wonder, are there any updates on the capabilities of the 3G video call capabilities of the European devices? (That a US-Verizon-Galaxy-Nexus will not have 3G video calls is obvious.)
I know that the Samsung Galaxy S2 in Europe definitely supports native video calls via 3G. But does Galaxy Nexus as well?
I appreciate any helpful response.
Thank you,

video calls
Video calls with no internet connection has been in australia for years now also. In regards to the topic question.
It would seem the galaxy nexus comes with no native video dialing free of an internet connection and no app's appear to be available for this option either. I find it to be a big disapointment when it comes to delivering options we have got used to being standard features on mobile phones today. Further more whilst the device seems to run quickly and relativly bug free it is a phone with substandard basic graphics for most of it's menus and general features. I use fring to make video calls and it seems to work fine however it does rely on an internet conection and a fring account $$$ if you wish to make video calls to people who don't have fring installed.

Video calls or a cellular network have pretty much been phased out now due to the advent of internet calling such as skype/google talk/fring/etc/etc. I remember when I had my HTC Tytn2 about 4 years ago it had video calling over cellular network but even if you could find someone else with a similar functioned phone then it was over 5 times the price per minute than an audio call and I never used it once in the 2 years I had the phone. I dont think america have ever had that function in a phone as I dont think their networks ever supported it and no british network that I know of (maybe 3 network) has video calls listed in their charges. Cant comment about Australia but its a pretty dead technology now and I cant see it making a return in England at least.

Rogers here in Canada had that but they gouged the FK out of it. So it never caught on. I know it's very popular in Hong Kong from what I've seen in the movies

Its been available for years. I remember it was in my Nokia 6680 (2005).
However this feature has to be supported by the carrier. Being on a 3G network doesn't necessarily mean you can make video calls. I remember trying that on my 6680 in 2005 and on my Vibrant (ported I9000 ROM) and of course got an error.

Dont believe everything you see in the movies

AFAIK, none of the US carriers ever bothered to support UMTS video calls, not even the old AT&T. Cingular had a video messaging service on a few phones, but it just used data. It was pretty much MMS with a larger maximum message size and a proprietary application on the phone. Their UMTS network was teensy at the time, so it made more sense to do something that could work with EDGE and GPRS.
From a US-centric perspective, it doesn't make much sense to spend engineering effort on the feature.

How to Surf and Talk on EVO 4G

Hi Guys I'm starting this thread hoping somebody out there knows how to do this or please point me in the right direction. I know it is possible to talk on the EVO and Surf in 3G at the same time. I know this can be done on 4G. The reason why I said it can be done I have a friend that has a Sprint Palm Pre they told me they can do this without being on WiFi. If we can figure this out video Calling will go alot smoother and better by using Knocking Video. If we can pull this off calling the other person on EVO or even the IPhone using Knocking video your voice would be channel through the 1x while the video without voice traveling through 3G and 4G for those who has it is. Now this is how its done overseas out of the USA every phone comes with two camera we are the ones behind. Now I know its a setting in the ##DATA# that has been disable or turned off. My thoughts are that Sprint either turned it off and not allowing this to be done yet "why" to promote 4G. Now Voice and Video consumes alot of data from both Parties Knocking Video do not as of yet have audio so therefore if we can Somehow turn this on calling your party puting them on speaker or Bluetooth video will go alot smoother. AT&T has this option where they can talk and surf but they have Face time only on WiFi. thank you guys for taking time and reading this post hope we can figure this out. I have Faith in you guys. Thanks for your hard work all of you..

edit: not going to happen sorry your friend lied.

I was completely deceived by the Title.
Perhaps you should have edited your Title to say "Can you use Data and Voice at the same time on Sprint?".
Your friend lied.. It can't be done..

Wrong forum. This should be in q&a. But to reiterate, with CDMA this is impossible. The network is not made for this.

Connect to Wifi or 4G. Those are your only options.
Yes you can do this but you have to be on 4G. As the others said, its not a setting you can just tweak. Sprints nor Verizons network support this on 3G.
I used to do it all the time from my Touch Diamond on Sprint - routinely, actually.
I was surprised when I couldn't do it on my Evo 4G, but eh - it wasn't that big of a deal.
your friend with a pre is a liar, I've got a pre sitting on my coffee table that can attest to it if you want
I remember being able to do this on my Mogul thought....
It is not physically possible for any CDMA phone to do this, I have no idea why you would think anything but. Using WiFi or 4G you can, but otherwise you can't.
3G is plenty for video calling anyways, voice/video run about 1Mb/sec according to fring.

nope. It's just like when you get a call or text message, anything you were doing on the net is paused. I would routinely tether to my laptop and stream netflix. A call stops that in its tracks.

Those of you saying you were able to do it with your previous phone... You're not recalling it correctly. It cannot be done. You cannot surf and talk at the same time, with EV-DO, period.
It's impossible and there is absolutely no proof that this was ever possible.
Like other people said, this is a limitation of the EV-DO technology. So unless your windows mobile handset was so slow to the point that it was showing you delayed data during a phone call , it is simply impossible.

Yes but that's one way calling and 3g for sprint is 1.something so it will be choppy. Pocketnow did a test on the iPhone tethering sprint phone with the iPhone face time and it was choppy only At&t stood up to smooth video calling. See we can send text while talking and text is data yes it is data. Before we couldn't send text while talking. And on the pre some phone where able to do this some wasn't due the the update. I'm thinking it was a test sprint was doing. Early or mid last yeah cmda purchase the technology for this to happen Its all a money thing in USA think about it. See sprint charging. Us extra $10 for this phone and future phones. I believe its a setting somewhere on this phone. Because you can turn. Receive text off while on a call and send to voicemail I was thinking somebody out there would know more about the ##data# settings. Than I do please help in anyway

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE! I don't know why you can't understand this. You might have been able to use the browser while on the phone if the page was CACHED, but 100% there is no CDMA phone that can browse and talk at the same time without being on 4G or connected to Wi-Fi.
Also, SMS is NOT data - it goes over the voice network.
To those who have done it previously with Windows Mobile phones, It was because you were connected to ActiveSync sharing your computer's internet connection, not surfing and talking on 3G at the same time. It is impossible, as it is a limitation of the CDMA technology used. Different EV-DO/EV-DV Revisions could have made this possible. However, neither Verizon nor Sprint took advantage.

Agreed with this response 100%. Simultaneous data/voice is a technical limitation of cdma/EV-DO and no amount of software hacks/settings/whatever can change that.

[BOUNTY(?)] WiFi calling

Not really sure how to properly start a bounty thread, and direction is appreciated. Also don't know if this is even possible as I know porting wifi calling has proven to be nearly impossible on other devices, e.g. Nexus S. However, doesn't hurt to ask and I know it was done on Nexus One. Am using Galaxy Nexus on TMo, if that makes any difference.
Really, desperately need wifi calling for reception purposes in my apartment. Left TMo's Galaxy S2 for the Galaxy Nexus, love everything about it except lack of reception in home.
I know I can utilize Google Voice, but I need to be able to use my TMo number for both incoming and outgoing calls as well as texts, and not interested in porting my mobile number to Google.
I'm willing to fork over $100 for working wifi calling, if anyone is up to the challenge... if even possible...
Also, if anyone has alternate suggestion (not Google Voice, something that utilizes TMo mobile number, would be GREATLY appreciated!!
If this is possible that would be awesome. But I believe UMA is strictly a tmo thing

I use Groove IP app exclusively for calls, both over wifi and 3G/HSPA+. I am on the T-mobile $30/unlimited data/100min plan, so it is a must for me. It works great! and only a few bucks on the market. You will need a Google Voice account, and to set it to ring Google Talk, and maybe a little other setup, but it is pretty simple.

I will match whatever contribution you make. I want to see the WiFi calling in the ways of the HTC Glacier (MT4G)...
Verizon has a network extender that plugs into your home internet connection. It gives you a cell signal in your house and routes it over the internet back to Verizon. There is no monthly fee just a charge of the device. $250 i think. Maybe TMo has a similar device.

TMo does have a signal booster device, but it cannot be implemented in shared-wall structures (i.e. apartment buildings). Also, have many places, such as family homes, with lousy in-door coverage where wi-fi calling makes all the difference in the world.
i called tmo last month i fact complaining of a low signal in my town home. they sent me a signal booster for free.. from 1 bar downstairs to now 5 bars

Well I'm not scared of the signal booster police!
Unfortunately they check your address to verify. NO, I don't know if/how they can verify ALL shared wall structures, but for someone like me with "Apt. 5J" attached to my address it's not difficult. The issue is you need to register your address in case of emergency, as 911 cannot definitely and accurately determine your address if making a call using signal booster. So the issue is that if a neighbor picks up your signal without knowing and makes an emergency call, 911 may not be able to identify address. I know it's a long shot but it's not MY rule. And afaik, you cannot lock the signal to exclude others as you can with wifi.

Oh, and hall = haul when referring to carrying someone away. Just saying
I think the booster is tied to your cell account... so you might have a fun surprise.
The wifi calling was awesome but ultimately its property of T-Mobile and doesn't work on ICS. T-Mobile must update it before even attempting to porting it over.
CM team has used it a ton. Maybe they'll implement it in their CM9 rom. But I suspect they'll be busy just ironing out the bugs for a while.
Plus T-Mobile is doing away with wifi calling as we know it. I BELIEVE they're implementing a new system and probably going to charge for it.
Hopefully T-Mobile gets this working on some ICS (Nexus?) when it releases.

You're correct that wifi calling is very proprietary to T-Mobile and from what I understand (I'm not a developer whatsoever), is extremely difficult to impossible to port. I've been watching them try it on Nexus S since its release a year ago.
Unfortunately T-Mobile won't make it available to a non-branded TMo phone so unless Galaxy Nexus is released directly by TMo (which I doubt will happen), it won't happen even when they update it for their own ICS devices.
ALso, TMo did in fact change the implementation of their wifi calling- it's already been released on new devices such as TMo Galaxy S2 and HTC Amaze. However they are not and will not be charging for it (in fact they've again enabled free calls that don't use plan minutes when calling on wifi), it has just changed the way it's handled (better performance). Little to no noticeable change to end users.
Would be great if CM team get it working on Galaxy Nexus!
Good thoughts, thanks!

The problem on the Nexus S has nothing to do with the Wifi Calling app (which is actually made by Kineto), the problem is the radio interface layer (from Samsung) which is a binary blob. It does not support what the Wifi calling software requires to work (authentication calls mainly). Kineto blames Google for not "requesting" this feature from Samsung.
Getting the Kineto app up and working was really not that difficult. The only thing that needed to be changed was an audio library because the constructor was changed from Froyo to Gingerbread. That had nothing to do with the Kineto/Wifi calling software other than it used that constructor.

I believe there is also a hardware component to it now (SIM based).

Yep. And I used a N-8000 (N10.1-12) for over a year before that. It's great not only from a constant connectivity perspective (not having the device bog down syncing every time it connects to Wi-Fi) but also from having a full keyboard for MMS and a gigantic battery for long conference calls so your phone's battery isn't hosed. Using Pen Window minimized with the phone app for a call when you're using S Note to take notes from the call is pretty spiffy. I don't know if it still exists for new service but AT&T's IMEI database doesn't know what the SM-P601/N-8000 are. I added them to my account for $9.99 as a non-Smartphone and got unlimited data for non-Smartphones for $10 more.

3. Is it the unlocked model or a country specific model
4. Did you have any issues connecting it to the towers?

The SM-P601/5 are really just giant phones. They most likely have the same radios as the S-800/Exynos N3's and would perform the same way. Pop a SIM in that's on a smartphone data plan and you've got voice, MMS, and data just like you would on a phone. HSPA+ download speeds on AT&T are between 5-8MB which I'm fine with.
Mine's from Negri and its got a Trinidad CSC which most of their HSPA+ devices do. All international devices are unlocked and it didn't have region lock applied like some of Samsung's newer smartphones do.
P.S. - The LTE versions that will eventually be sold by the U.S. carriers will have the voice and MMS features disabled; they always do.

? About volte on note 3...

I am very curious about this. These 3 phones are supported...
LG G Flex
Samsung Galaxy Light
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
What sucks is when volte hits Houston market I would love to flip my phone to volte and leave it there only and hopefully better battery life overall because LTE is efficient and it won't have to search for radios as much. But my dilemma is not only am I on almost stock UK rom, I want to be stuck on 4.3 for sure.. Yes, you read that right. 4.3 still uses webview and therefore text reflow (not to mention inverted rendering) is still available. Invaluable when web searching and emails, text reflow obviously and invert obviously to take advantage of amoled's strengths.. I can live with the apps having selectable text size because there won't be a need for a side to scroll on top of vertical scrolling. Email and web viewing without text reflow is unforgivable. There are already enough new android nuances that may force me to research LCD phones in the future whenever I decide to upgrade. I hate LCS, but it's tolerable on a phone rather than a TV or monitor.
Anyways, my big question is will the illustrious devs have some kind of work around for this? My note 3 is not going anywhere or deviating from 4.3 for other reasons also. It's my dap and mini tablet while I use my moto x. Please tell me some magic can be worked because I want to sell my x soon and get another phone regardless but I'd rather wait for the 64bit phones to hit market but have volte capable phone in the meantime. Thoughts? Answers? Hacks?

Don't hold your breath expecting 4.3 to ever support it.

VoLTE already in Houston, I am using it now, as I see when I make a call, the LTE still active while in call, before the update I was only getting 4G while in call. furthermore; All calls made through LTE were HD voice.
by the way I live in Houston SW area.
People talking about volte and we barley have LTE coverage in Cincinnati.
I don't even get 4G by my house, much less LTE unless I drive 45 mins into north cincy. None of upper Kentucky by us has LTE.
Lol...

i assume you're on 4.4.x? and not 4.3? if it works on 4.3 by some miracle, i'm getting a micro sim as soon as tmobile opens and selling my moto x.

Wifi Calling With AT&T on N900-T Unlocked...Possible or not?

As I have experienced first hand, T-Mobile's wifi calling feature works amazing on my Note 3. The problem is, where I live, work and play we do not get any T-Mobile service above 2g, and mostly nothing at all. I'm actually confused as to why local stores are even selling the service. It simply doesn't work here. Anyhow, I had purchased a month of prepaid service with them because I don't get ANY service from any provider at my home (except Verizon, who comes in at 5 bars in my basement). The wifi calling feature was amazing for this one reason. I never missed a call, or text and life was good. Of course, the moment I left the house my $800.00 Note 3 turned into a very expensive makeup mirror for my wife because, like I mentioned, we don't get T-Mobile here, at all. I still have 2 weeks of the service active, and put the sim into my i-747 S3 for testing.
I'm currently running Hyperdrive RLS3.1 (NB4) on AT&T Go-Service on my Note 3.
What I'm asking is simple, or maybe it isn't -
I would like to know where I could find info on a REAL wifi calling service. Not these 3rd party apps that give you a new free #, etc. I'd like something that integrates into the phone, like TM Wifi calling does. After searching this topic on XDA, I found a few threads on SIP VoIP. I'd even be willing to give that a shot. If I have to invest a few dollars, that is also ok. Has anyone else successfully done this? Any better idea's or suggestions? I'm tired of not being able to make calls from my cell phone at home. I have looked into repeaters, extenders, etc, but that is for another thread, I suppose.
I know that the native wifi calling on my Note 3 will not work with AT&T, but there must be something that can work....
Thanks for any info or help anyone can provide.
Real WiFi calling has to be supported on the back end by the carrier.
You are going to be limited to a 3rd party solution.
That's what I use. I have to use magic jack.

I also started using magicjack on my phone. After trying out several voip SIP services with the native android app, I realized that it would never have the sound quality I needed.
This is all null and void now though. I retired my N900T and bought the Verizon Note 3 and never drop signal or lose LTE, even in my basement.
100% not possible. It relies on servers at T-Mobile's end. Plus the settings in the Wifi Calling app are set to T-Mobile's servers on top of that.
