Isn't it launching in UK for the Olympics? You might not have to wait much longer. On a side note, I have been using Google Wallet on my GN in US for a few weeks now and while it's absolutely awesome/futurisitic to use, it's surprising how few places take it here (I'm in NYC!). Google only has a very small number of partners and even the # of Mastercard PayPass locations is suprisingly small.
Hopefully things will pick up.

I'm just looking forward to an official Canadian launch soon. I have seen a lot of terminals that i could pay at using a GNEx

Okay, let me confirm some suspicions.
I can confirm that this method is working with a $25 Vanilla Mastercard (I'm located in Canada)
Second, a Social Security Number is only required after topping up more than two times. (Unconfirmed by me, but was stated in this thread)

Anywhere you see the MasterCard Paypass symbol. E.g., Tim Hortons.

I'm in Aus and pay pass is allover the place, I haven't blown my $10 yet cos I'm saving it for 'a special occasion lol.

I cant get my hands on a vanilla card even I wanted to, they only seem to sell them in store, no way to get one over the net.

Well I just tried logging into Google Wallet with a web browser and adding an American address to my existing credit but it still didn't work.

The reason enter billing adresses to credit card payments is to verify your identity, obviously if your address on file with google doesnt match your cc billing adress thats on file with your bank, it will get declined. The reason vanilla works is because there is no address attached to it since you dont get billed, so you just create a fictive address with matching zip code you manually registered.

I just used my prepaid funds at a McDonald's in Brampton, Ontario and it was amazing, lol. I'm rooted by the way and used in no problem even with the unsupported device message.

NFC with Google Wallet

Does anyone know for sure if we can use Google Wallet with our One X and if not why not? I'm looking for a solid answer, not speculation if anyone knows for sure. Thanks a lot in advance!

It all depends on your carrier. Even if your unlocked. I'm using an international version on US's AT&T. I can download google wallet, but as soon as I open it tells me my country/carrier is not supported at this time.

No. You can download it from the Market but when you open it you get "Google Wallet has not yet been certified in your country or on your device/carrier." I'm hoping it's not the former because it's picking the phone up as being from the UK. If it's the latter I'm hoping that when AT&T launches the One X it'll be Google Wallet certified. That may not benefit us though because the AT&T phone will have a different model number. Bottom line, don't buy the international One X if Google Wallet is one of your hot buttons.

Unlikely AT&T will ever allow this as I believe all US carriers are collaborating on using an alternative to Google Wallet. The only thing I can think of is to edit build.prop to spoof a UK carrier.

Well I'm on AT&T as well and when I flashed the google wallet .apk on my Galaxy Nexus I had no problems using it. It wasn't a download from the market, it was a cwm flashable zip and I was able to use it just fine on AT&T. Could this not be done with our One X just the same?

if not, then everyone should get back $50+ on their phones. even descriptions on store sites mention NFC and Google Wallet.

AT&T supports Google wallet on the GN and NS.

Neither HTC or Google can do anything if AT&T doesn't add the device to their supported list. The GN and NS are designed to be used on multiple carriers while AT&T has their own version of the One X(L). You can root your phone to get Google Wallet working but I advice against it as it's way too easy for your financial info to be hacked.

I'm not too sure about that. The application only seems to work on the Nexus devices; even a rooted and unlocked One X with Market Enabler will receive the same error about device compatibility. Sounds to me like Google will have to update Wallet before One X owners can use it.

I read the other day that google has suspend Google Wallet for now as it's so easy to hack in to anyone's account...

That is an old article. Wallet has received a few updates since then and all is working fine again. Wallet itself was never suspended either. The ability to add new Google prepaid cards was turned off for a short time, and the ability to re-add existing Google prepaid cards that had been removed was disabled for a few weeks after that.
If you were an existing wallet user prior to all the hype you were completely unaffected during that entire time so long as you did not remove your existing prepaid card from with the app itself or wipe/reset your device etc.

I installed Google Wallet on an AT&T One X in store and it had the same error about being unsupported. FYI

Well, that sucks. They could be supporting the Nexi under pressure/cajoling from Citibank/MasterCard/Google. Do any of the phones they sell directly have NFC and support Google Wallet? Being optimistic the One X launch was pushed up and maybe their just not ready yet. There's still no telling if the international version will work because it has a different network ID. Sigh.

if there is some hacked version that works, post it here because i will use it. i don't care if it's not secure. i don't keep money in my bank account for long and i have nothing to hide. ;p

FWIW, I think it uses Market to determine carrier and I'm guessing build.prop possibly for device. I'm sure there's a way to get it to work especially since AT&T is officially supports so it's just the device you have to get over.

It worked on my Galaxy nexus with market enabler. It doesn't with my one X...

it's my guess that after the security flap, google has really beefed up the barriers for wallet. i've read that google is working on whatever has to be done to jump through the hoops in the eu to enable wallet, so if that happens things might change. or maybe if an agreement is reached with at&t, for example, to enable wallet on its one x's that would change accessibility. otherwise everything i've read says no joy on this right now.

The point was trying to change phone id to galaxy nexus, if it's possible.
Changing carrier ID on the galaxy nexus is confirmed to work, also outside of the states.

[Q] NFC or not???

Greetings! I'm getting conflicting information if this is actually working or not on AT&T network. Anyone have this working?
A recent news article mentions that AT&T has approved NFC on one x, but chatting with a AT&T Store Manager mentions NFC is still disabled for all devices... Can anyone confirm or deny? Any work arounds?

You want this forum. This is the international One X forum and the AT&T one isn't the same. The AT&T One X is actually the "One XL" but they annoyingly called it the One X as well. The baseband, CPU and GPU are different in the One XL.

i have the international X model and it's on the ATT network, so this is in the right place. it's also been discussed already in topics about NFC and Google Wallet. i can vouch that it does not work with an ATT sim and it does not work with a Straight Talk sim. it's nice of them to list a feature that most people can't even use. they shouldn't even mention NFC on these phones if we can't use it properly. i'm not buying a bunch of tags to play with. that's not the point of NFC.

Nfc works fine on the international version on ATT. The carrier can't affect that unless they have a say in your rom. Since you don't get updates touched by ATT it's a non issue.
Google Wallet on the other hand doesn't work on the One X. This isn't a carrier issue. Complain to Google to authorize the device.
You can say what you like, but "the point" of nfc isn't Google Wallet. The point is NFC. Mobile payments are coming in the form of Isis wallet, carrier specific wallets, MasterCard now is developing a mobile payment system with nfc as well as google wallet. This is all a ways off though.
Don't purchase an emerging technology and then wine that you aren't surrounded with use cases. If you want to move to India or Japan they are much further forward in deploying nfc than the US.

This isn't true. The carrier and Google have to have an agreement in place on a per device basis to use Google Wallet which is what most people in the U.S. relate to NFC. Under pressure, AT&T authorized the Nexi. They are the only devices allowed by AT&T to access Google Wallet via their network. And Google Wallet requires a carrier connection, it doesn't work over Wi-Fi.
There are hacks to spoof the network and in some cases you can even gain (unsecured) access to some of the features. But if you screw up the security token on your phone (which quite a few people have done) you'll never be able to use it with a payment system again and there is no recovery available.
NFC as a means of communication is very different than using it in conjunction with a payment system.

NFC != Google Wallet. The fact remains ATT can't disable NFC on a device they have no control over. Google Wallet is an app the leverages NFC.

Speak for yourself before you dish out insults. Your phone has NFC and it WORKS. Google Wallet doesn't work by NFC DOES.
AT&T can NOT stop you from using NFC as a whole but they can stop you from using an app like Google Wallet that requires NFC.
NFC has always worked on your phone, you just think that means you can use Google Wallet when it doesn't.

I haven't seen this topic show up on this forum and I had a couple of questions so...... im very interested to know what you guys think of AT&T's upcoming NFC program ISIS? Also does anyone know when we can expect it to be available?

Classic AT&T fail...

It really isn't a fail on AT&T's part. Google Wallet isn't doing that fantastic, especially with how few companies are accepting it. Yea, ISIS isn't ready to go yet, however I live in SLC, one of the main areas that ISIS will be launching at in the summer, and at least 1 in 3 stores has already signed on and started preparing for the switch, UTA (the transit system out here) has also signed on and are making adjustments. Once ISIS is out, it will have a much stronger chance of doing well right out of the gate compared to Google Wallet.
Yes, it required a delay for AT&T users before we get to use NFC for payments, however choosing to back a program that now has a strong backing from companies as well as banks/credit card providers, ISIS really was a good decision.
Sure they could have put their eggs in both baskets, but that probably wouldn't have worked out too well, after all, one of the two would have tried to force them into one corner or the other.

It is not just AT&T. The whole ISIS initiative is a joint venture between AT&T, T-mobile, and Verizon. That is why when the Google Wallet first launched it could only be used on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus from Sprint.

Yes, this is also true. People are blaming just their networks, but Google is at fault here too. They have been very slow in everything that relates to Google Wallet. Getting retailer support isn't actually a problem for Wallet, since it uses PayPass which is already quite popular. But getting more support for phones, especially internationally, is very important, and Google have failed badly at this.

Not to mention the fact that Google didn't really pursue adding more carriers early on. First they wanted extensive testing to insure it was ready for a large scale launch. Unfortunately by the time they were ready to bring in everyone else, T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T had decided not to wait but instead to help start up something new. Honestly, I'm excited because ISIS looks very promising.
Blaming AT&T, or for that matter any carrier other than Sprint, or not waiting on Google to let them in on G-Wallet is kinda pointless, after all no business wants to wait, they want to get in on the action and try to beat the competition.

Google is just piggy back ridding off of PayPass. I'm positive Google Wallet will be accepted by every NFC payment system.

A slight correction - Google Wallet launched on the Nexus S 4G on Sprint in ~September 2011 via an OTA.

There are a few things to understand about the release and development of an application like this.
1) To release an application you have to have it available to devices.
- AT&T, Verizon, and TMobile have basically stopped the release of this app by preventing it from being installed on over 80% of the phones in the US.
2) Wallet is just as good as any other app out there, and could be better with a large company like Google behind it.
- Knowing that they would not be able to install on the majority of phones, development probably got put on the back burner.
3) AT&T, Verizon and TMobile in may ways have jointly killed the Wallet project since Google decided not to go to court to fight for the app to be released on their networks.
4) The Wallet application CAN run on any network, it is just software.
5) In no way is Google responsible for the success or lack of it with Wallet. In this case, they tried to release it with the intention of having it on all Nexus phones and the carriers stopped it.

Google are not obliged to block Wallet from showing up in the Play Store for certain networks. Like you said, Wallet will work on any network.
Apple would have no trouble installing their own Wallet solution, regardless of the networks' reluctance. It's because Google are '*****es' to the networks - they do whatever the networks tell them to. That's why their own 'pure' Google devices like the Verizon Nexus have bloat and branding on them. That's never been the case with Apple. Apple puts their foot down, and the networks have no choice but to comply with Apple. It's not the same for Google. They're pushovers.
Google could of course release Wallet in the European markets, where they already have money handling licences for the web version of Google Wallet and where consumers aren't so heavily reliant on networks when purchasing phones. But they haven't done this.
So, yes, the eventual failure of Google Wallet will be down to Google.

It is restricted and is locked by your location although I'm sure there are some applications that can mock your location.

It will work anywhere that has Mastercard PayPass terminals... off the top of my head they have them at McDonald's and Tim Horton's although I have never seen one work at Timmy's (not NFC, my regular PayPass cards never register with their terminals).

Do you have a link to an up-to-date Market Enabler? Something that works with Jelly Bean and the Play Store? I've been digging through threads looking for one, and I can't find an official thread for one. There's one called "Market Access" (sorry, I don't have enough posts to include an outside link here) that will apparently do it, but I'm hesitant to install something from a random link.

Try to add money to your Google prepaid card. It did not work for me, even if my Canadian Visa has a US billing address. I think it detects the institution who released the card and blocks it. I purchased my Nexus directly from Google Play, using the same card. From what I heard, they detect also if your phone is rooted or non-stock ROM:
We strongly discourage gaining system-level "root" access to your phone if you plan to use Google Wallet. We are unable to support devices with unauthorized operating systems as the security layers of the device may be limited.

My phone is not rooted, and it does not work on Bell network:
It does work properly when I use my T-Mobile SIM card:

I used the market enabler, but it says my Nexus S is not supported by Google Wallet. Is that so? I don't see why since the The Nexus S has NFC just like the GNEX.

Do you really think Google is that stupid to allow adding a credit card with a fake address like others are trying to do?
Anyways, I have a Canadian credit card with an official US billing address on it. Guess what, Wallet does not work at all on Bell. Even if I put my T-Mobile SIM card on the phone, I'm pretty sure it will not work also with a Canadian card as the financial institution is not registered into Google's Money Network.
We have to wait like every one else... until Google decides to open Wallet in Canada, if it will.
At the rate they open products in Canada, we should have it enabled in about 10 years.

Ya I agree. Its stupid. Sorry Google but USA isn't the only country in the world. This the usa likes to think so. Lol
