Kindle Fire: Install Apps outside US - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello there everybody
Nice to meet you all
I come before you with a grave problem: Is there another way to install apps on a rooted kindle outside the US? For sideloading, you need a free app from the Amazon App Store, which, I had to find out, was not available outside the US.
In retrospect, it was quite a stupid thing to buy the device. Lesson learned.
But maybe you might know a way? (I can't install the google market without a file explorer)
Thank you.

I contacted Unblock-Us and they told me they are working on supporting the Amazon App Store. If they do, then it's just a matter of setting your router's DNS according to what they give you and it'll be possible. They have a week of free trial which is enough to download the file explorer you want.
Outside of that, I'm in the same problem. The second option would be to have someone in America register a dummy Amazon account onto his Kindle Fire, click "buy" on the free file explorer app, then de-register, and when you register your own Kindle Fire to the same account, you could sync the app with your kindle. As far as I know, Amazon still allows syncing your bought content into the device even outside the US (I never tested this though).
If anyone can please volunteer to try the second option that would be awesome. Till then we need to wait for Unblock-Us.

I don't really see anywhere in that thread where you can sideload apps without the ES Explorer or some other sort of app.. we can't download apps at all.
Another thread on that site says that you can install apps as long as you have a US account on Amazon.. which is not true. I have an account with a US address, US credit card and US location for the kindle and it says my location is not the US on the Fire, meaning it tracks IP.

Could adb be used, So download ES to the PC and use adb install ? That should work fine

or get the ES apk file from google, upload to dropbox, access dropbox from fire, it will automatically install it for u.

Wait.. you can just download APK files and install it? Is it really that easy?
All the guides said you need ES Explorer which is what was so misleading. There's no issue here at all and you don't need an explorer for anything, just Google.

Side loading
Hi, did you try side loading the ES file explorer?

Had you tried using a proxy? is this even posible? (to use a proxy I mean).
BTW, in wich country are you? I was going to buy a kindle fire for my wife but know I dont think so. We live in Mexico...

MacaronyMax - my hero
Just a little detail on what got my file explorer working in the UK:
Downloaded the needed apk file (don't ask - probably a really dodgy source). I copied it into my Program Files\Androidzandroid-sdk\platform-tools folder (for ease of install).
Then installing was as easy as "adb install *****.apk" (enter your filename).
Complete success, and now with my root file manager I can now do all the other things.
I'm one who has an american amazon account with bank account and everything. Seems as if some geo-ip mapping is stopping purchases from outside america, even on US devices.
Hope this helps.

You don't need additional apps to install APK files
Hey bikkou, that's right, you don't need additional apps to install APK files on your Kindle Fire. I agree, all threads out there seem misleading in this point.
I emailed myself an APK file, accessed my email account with the built in browser, downloaded the file, and then, when I tapped the file (which was listed in the downloads section) the device offered me the option to install the application.

Switzerland ... can't install any app. not even free apps

When I try to download a FREE app I see
"Purchasing..."
and then
"The Amazon AppStore is not available in your region"
:-(
What can I do?
First, this belongs in general.
Two, root and use the android market. Or try and use a proxy that is located in the US or a country that amazon allows the appstore in.
sorry for posting in the wrong forum.
I did root my kindle, BUT I can't install any of the apk's because there is no File Explorer on the kindle ...
>Proxy
where do I enter a proxy (on the kindle)?
You will have to get either root explorer or es explorer apk file, and then push that onto the kindle with adb.
search for pushing apps with adb.
Then after you get them in, you put in the market, etc and work from there
Rooted here. What about emailing the apk's to yourself?

Go to Amazon's home page, click on "Your Account" on the top right, under "Settings" and "Address Book", click on "Add New Address", and add a United States address (perhaps one generated from Fake Name Generator).
You can now set that as your primary location, and use it as if you were in the United States.
I did this with a Germany address to buy an eBook off of Amazon, as that specific eBook was not available for customers within the United States. Switching back to my native American address still allowed me access to the eBook, so you can switch back and forth with no recourse.
Use the fake Addy I always use 360 Pile Drive, Long Island City, ny 11101
I've also read that if you buy yourself an Amazon gift card and credit this to your account that works too.
unfortunately setting a US address didn't help.
I was able to "adb push" RootExplorer onto my Fire. Appears in Settings-Applications. But how do I start RootExplorer?

You might need to install a different Launcher in order to run RootExplorer and later the Android Market as well, have a look at his video...

One step further, thanks to the ICS launcher
Next problem:
When I open "Market" I get to see "You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?"
When I click Yes the "Market"-App closes and nothing else happens...

It needs a US Credit Card address.
Hmm, never had that specific thing happen to me. However I did have issues with the Android Market closing on me. I am not by my computer at the moment, but I remember that out of all vending.apk's the one that finally worked for me was the one included in the "gapps.rar" file including all the google apps and is found uner a link posted on these forums under the Kindle Fire Android Market installation tutorial.
Hope that helps...
I was missing the GoogleServiceFramework.apk
Thanks for all the help!
looks like I was (too) optimistic
The app is always closing on me. Tried to install several vending/framework combinations to no avail

Did you install or move the GSF to /system/app?
I just "installed" it
Hi, you need to "just install" the framework (from whichever folder you downloaded it to), then:
- copy the market app
- navigate to /system/apps
- mount the folder as R/W (read/write)
- paste the market app there
- change market's permissions to (rw-r--r--)
- install the market
That should do it
Regards
dalogrus
new day...hopefully new luck
Market is up an running, that is, almost running...
Downloads start (at least the progress bar open) but never end . What am I missing?
Try a different market app.
Vending.apk did what you are describing to me. Instead I used com.amarket.apk found in the gapps.zip and worked fine.

Bumping thread.
It is also happening to me, let me know if you managed to solve it, and if yes, how
I may be wrong but I think this is one of Amazon's underhanded little tricks. I noticed this recently myself and it seems that when you download your books from the cloud to your device, they are either hidden or encrypted to prevent people from sharing or transferring between devices. Who knows what the reason is.
You can still go to Amazon.com and download your books in .azw format to your computer and use Calibre with a drm removal plugin to convert the .azw to .mobi before placing them in your "kindle" folder. [Edit:] fixed stupidity
[Edit:] In the process of writing this, I was able to locate where Kindle stores books. On your sdcard, under Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files you will find all of your books and documents renamed and with a different file extension ".prc". I'll look into it more to see what can be done with the .prc format and maybe see if it's as simple as renaming it.
[2nd Edit:] The .prc files can be placed in your /sdcard/kindle folder and they should remain untouched when switching between Amazon Kindle accounts.
[3rd Edit:] "Google Books" is the same way.

Let me know if you find a "fix" for that.
My problem is a little different as i said up there, my "Books" are Fine, but, even tho my "Documents" are showing up at the "Documents" tab, i can't download nor open any of them.
Once i hit any document it only flashed (so that i know i touched it), but, nothing else happens. Same with trying to "download" it.
By the way, i dont have this folder located in my "sdcard" folder : Amazon/data/com.amazon.kindle/files
Anyone else have it ?

Hi,
I suggest that my problem has actually got the same root as yours.
I've got 2 different Amazon accounts. I've purchased a lot of books with my
Kindle One a year ago and I've recently bought a new Kindle Fire.
In order to access the Books on my old account, I have to register and deregister the device and download the books from cloud to the device every time.
I am just curious if there is a way to keep my Books and Documents after deregistering form my old Amazon account.
My Kindle fire is rooted and I've just found out that Kindle stores all books in my ''books'' folder after downloading them from cloud but If after that you deregister the device it simply deletes all of them. Now after making a backup of all files and putting them back in books folder Kindle doesn't recognize or show them after all. As mentioned above thre are a lot of *.prc files, but to deal with them?
Are they encrypted some how?
Any Ideas?
Thank you in Advance
cheers
Mjay
I'm not sure what the .prc files are exactly but when I put them in my "kindle" folder, the Kindle app recognizes them as my downloaded books.
While you are signed into one account, copy the contents of the folder containing the .prc files and put them in a safe place on your sdcard. Then switch accounts and either put them back in the same place, or in whichever folder your Kindle accesses books from. Just keep a backup in case you switch accounts and they get deleted again.
You may want to figure out which filename belongs to which book and rename it.

Rooted successfully, have play store app but won't open...help

I properly rooted my Kindle fire HD. I then tried to install the play store app. I went to about 5 or 6 different website with similar but different instructions how to get the play store app working. For the life of me I can't get it to work. I have all the files installed and it shows the play store app on the device but when I click on it nothing happens. It will let me install the program but when I click open it does nothing. I've restarted it, tried different tips from different websites and am completely at a loss for what my next trouble shooting tip needs to be.
Also, I saw where you can remove the ads by changing the extension name of a file to .bat or go in and uncheck some boxes, both in the super user ES3 folders and neither one will accept the changes.
Please help my sanity.

Uninstall the Play Store in whatever way you can (such as using ES File Explorer), then use the KF Fist Aide tool to install the Play Store again. It also has an option to remove the Amazon ads too.

[Q] Installing Chrome or any APK's

Looks like ES File Explorer isn't available in the Amazon app store for the Fire Phone. I've tried downloading .apk's from elsewhere via silk to no avail (it looks like it is specifically not allowing *.apk's to download). There is the option to allow installing 3rd party apps, but not sure how to get the apk on the device. Anyone found a way yet?
Mine is still sitting on a UPS truck somewhere here in town, will have it soon. I sure hope we can at least get gMail and Chrome working otherwise I may return mine shortly after getting it.
Edit: oh crap, didn't realize YouTube will not work either.
adb sideloading works...
I was able to enable USB debugging by going into Settings > Device > Get Info About Your Fire and tapping the device name 5 times.
After that I following this guide ( https://developer.amazon.com/post/T...p-the-ADB-driver-for-Kindle-Fire-Devices.html ) to get the right Kindle adb driver installed.
From there I used the chrome apk found here ( http://www.thinkcomputers.org/how-to-install-google-chrome-on-the-amazon-kindle-fire-hd/ ) and did a "adb install chrome.apk"
So far, so good...
Awesome, wondering if google maps would work the the same.
gmail, youtube, etc have also been installed following this guide... http://www.gizmag.com/how-to-install-google-apps-kindle-fire-hd-hdx/30736/
Not sure about the stability yet, but I will report my findings...
Awesome, mine just arrived. I may leave it shrink wrapped for a couple more hours though.
I've been having difficulties getting my Windows 7 computer to detect the Fire Phone as a valid USB device. Windows tries to install drivers for it but always says drivers are not available. I just installed the android SDK and tried the Kindle drivers and the Google drivers, neither worked as well. I'm very frustrated at this point.
Ok, Windows 7 now sees my phone. I run the "N edition" and had to install many of the packages "N" excludes by default so it was an OS/Microsoft issue.
I just installed the basic four but the google framework crashes frequently while using google apps. The apps work but the framework crashing messages are annoying.
ES File Explorer
I had no issues with downloading this straight to my firephone then installing it. I did have to do some Google.fu to find the apk from a reliable source initialy but once on it is working as normal. If I can find the apk I used ill either upload it to my Google Drive and link or link straight to it if possible.
Es File Explorer
ES Fire Explorer is available for Fire phone. All you need to do is go to Amazon Appstore in your Fire and search for "ES File Explorer" and it will be there.
Yes, ES File Explorer is now on the Amazon App Store
I have installed it, along with many other apks I found on Google, such as Chrome, Instagram, uTorrent, Pandora and a bunch of games like Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Nova, GTA San Andreas and others.
So far everything is working fine. Ive had my Fire Phone for about a month now and it's really not a bad phone. It does everything I need it to.
The only issue I have noticed is that after I have been playing a high definition game for longer than 45 mins or so, the phone does start to get hot. But I just stop playing for a bit and it's fine.
Back to the original question though, yes ES File Explorer is now on the App store and working properly, and you can install just about any apk you can find.

[Q] How to free up space on amazon fire tv?

Hi all,
I rooted my fire tv. i downgrade firmware and installed CWM, install rbox bootloader, then upgrade pre-rooted firmware by rbox. Now when i check under setting --> system -> about i see 3.61gb free space from 5.49gb available space. I don't have a lot app installed in my rooted fire tv so i didnt think what i have installed would taken up 2gb. Here is what i have installed.
Google play store, kodi, llama, es file explore, busybee box, supersu, chrome, firefox and the whatever was required to gain root access, upgrade and downgrading firmware and whatever app is pre-installed from pre-rooted firmware.
Is there way to check which apps and files are taking up the most space and how do you free up space?
Also, does this sound right that only 3.59gb is left. At one point during my root process when i was pushing update.zip file thru adb to downgrade firmware, it took a very long so i exit out of adb (i simply click on "x" bar to close the connection) and started again but i am not sure maybe i installed update.zip file 2x. How do i check? How do ensure i don't have any unnecessary file on fire tv internal drive.
Thank you
I have 3 FireTVs, all rooted and they have between 3.0G to 3.4G free space so I say your free space is within reasonable range

hi thanks for posting back. Makes me feel better but still out of 8gb user only has 3.5gb, not ideal. i wonder where did the 5gb go.
I am curious to hear from others to see how they cleaned up space, if there are any methods.
I'd have to say kodi might be the culprit taking a lot of space with excessive data storage.
Anything similar to xbmc can be a resource hog for storage.

You don't get 8GB of usable space. I think it is only about 5GB. So you are using about 1.5 GB for apps. Not too bad if you are running Kodi.
An easy way to check where files are taking up space is to use the "sdcard analyze" function in esfile explorer. Its under the tools section. Also, with esfile explorer, you can push files from your phone to the firetv pretty easy too. Select whatever file you want to send on your phone, under options choose send, and make sure esfile explorer is open on the firetv too. The firetv prompts you for where you want to save the file.

You can free up quite a bit by pushing these advanced settings to
<advancedsettings>
<pathsubstitution>
<substitute>
<from>/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.xbmc.xbmc/files/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails/</from>
<to>/storage/usb/drive1/xbmcthumbnails/</to>
</substitute>
</pathsubstitution>
</advancedsettings>
You need to amend to kodi instread of xbmc if you're running 14.0 or higher AND my external is mounted by adbFire mount drives persistent. If you're using stickmount it would be sda (forget exact path?)
Once pushed and confirmed working, all your thumbnails will dissapear. Just go into userdata/database and delete textures13. Then restart xbmc.
Afterwards I also delete the thumbnails folder on internal. Oh yes...make sure you have a folder on external named xbmcthumbnails.
This should immediately clear about 600 mb and keep in mind you typically add more to your library so the amount it saves long term could be huge.

That's actually a good question. I've been using these so long I don't have a memory of exactly how fast they loaded before. I'll say this--they populate fast enough for me to keep using them. I use usb 3.0. I think it's essential based on how big my library is and the fact I use aeon nox with additional fanart.
But, I'd be very interested in seeing if you or someone else sees a significant lag in load times. You can always delete the xml if you find it slow.
Just an fyi I got these from an xda member awhile back. Since then lots of people have tried them and so far I haven't hear complaints, but I'd still like feedback from someone who can compare.
Another suggestion is to pre-scrape all the necessary support files with a media manager of your choice (e.g. fanart, icon, content info, etc.) and switch to local info only on the scraper for the collection. It depends also on how you have your collection organized from a folder perspective.
I found this to be fastest and lightest on local storage (obviously because the "library" is already built) especially when you have a household of streamers. You have all the content centralized on your NAS already. It's silly for streaming box to build the library and re-download the content each time from the Internet (especially if your like me as a perpetual media player tinkerer).
Edit: For clarity, I mean a "Library manager." Look on the Kodi wiki for links to various clients on your preferred OS.

That's it. As long as the two are on the aame network, it should pick up the firetv as a target.
To clarify, on the phone, long click the file to send, and select send. The firetv ip adress will show up and allow you to send the file. When the prompt shows up on the firetv(provided that esfile explorer is the active and open app), accept the transfer and select tge location to store the transferred file.
