Phantom Skinz Carbon Fiber Gunmetal Review & Pics - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Well I decided a long time ago that I cannot stand the normal clear skinz. They way they make the phone look is horrendous to me. Just my .02, please don't bash. I did, however, find that the matte finish is a bit nicer but still love chromatics the best. With that said I decided to give the new Gunmetal look a try. I like the color, but not sure if I like it more than Black. I feel I may get bored of it over time. We'll see!
Pros - Good feel, like all other Carbon Fiber skins.
- Still has a good grip with the textured skin.
- Good scratch proofing. I really don't see anything getting thought this. NOTE: I had one of these on a previous phone. Phone fell about 3.5' to a hard textured tile floor and no damage was done. This does NOT mean this is a case replacement. Just that it does provide some protection beyond scratches.
- Fairly easy to install. Just line the pieces up (Back is a little tough to get strait) and then use a hairdryer to soften up the skin. Once its warm and soft then just mold it around the edges. Make sure to use the hairdryer on ALL surfaces and rub them to cure them in place.
Cons - The edges are sharp. Not enough to cut, but can make the phone uncomfortable for some people to hold onto. Can also snag and peal the corner off.
- The edges tend to pick up lint. This only lasts the first week or so.
- Outer Edge alignment. As you can see in the pics, the top/bottom/side edge pieces are not long enough to wrap around and meet. There is a gap at all 4 corners. To me, this part is unacceptable.
Would I buy it again? No, not if the edge pieces do not align (I'm emailing to ask about this, maybe they will fix it?). Would I recommend? Yes if you don't care about the corner gaps, no if you do.
And here are the pics:

Nice. I don't mind small details, will grab one in white carbon since OEM parts (white) is not out.

Setzer175,
Thank you for the unbiased review. I wanted to address a couple of the concerns that you highlighted.
1) End pieces no being long enough - We design every kit so that the side pieces must be heated and stretched to join the top and bottom edge pieces. Since we have 20+ types of films for each device, some colors will need to be stretched slightly more than others. In fact, our "Metallic Colored Chromatics" hardly need stretched at all. On the other hand, White Carbon Fiber needs stretched the most. In your specific case, you should still be able to peel your side strips up, warm them and slightly stretch it to perfectly join to the Top and Bottom pieces.
2) Sharp edges - I use my thumbnail (the top of it) and rub it back and forth over any "sharp" edge after I re-heat that spot with a hairdryer. If you do this, you will notice that the "sharpness" is dramatically diminished. Also, the sharpness will wear down over time.
Thanks again for the review and feel free to contact us directly if you still have any concerns.

So you are telling me that several days later I can peal back, REHEAT the sides, and stretch them into place? Please confirm this before I attempt. I do not want to wait for a replacement. Thank you.
P.S. Thank you for responding to random review. #1 in customer service as always!

It looks very nice. If it were on sale I'd probably buy it.

I'm liking the fitment compared to the Skinit skin that I have even though mine isn't a carbon fiber design. The Skinit doesn't even come with the sides. But does come with the front and the skin for the battery on mine is 2 pieces.
Thanks for this review.

Any updates mate?
It took some time (about two or two and a half weeks) to get this to NY but I know that the weather was probably a factor. That being said here is the review (please note that this is a SUBJECTIVE review and if you buy based on it and are unhappy I apologize but don't hold me responsible):
Overall I think the case is of great quality. It's durable feeling and makes me much more comfortable in rough handling the device (not literally of course).
The fit and finish is really great. It fits the device like a glove. The holes and slots line up perfectly.
Profile of the Archos is not effected greatly either. I mean of course the unit will be a little bulkier in the case and slightly heavier but not to the extent that it made me dislike it. The 101 is the slimmest tablet I have held so even a silicone case would feel bulky but this fit in a rather good way.
The horizontal stand is good but not great when comparing to the one built in to the device. That is because it's not as rigid and will slide if you are pressing too hard. That i to be expected I guess since it's not a rigid stand. It does the trick for most things though (like resting on my stomach while I'm using the 101 in bed.
The concept of the vertical stand is quite flawed. It works okay again if I am resting it against my raised legs while in bed but on a flat surface it doesn't stand straight. Not only doesn't it stand straight but using it is minimal without it falling back. (This is probably the biggest flaw).
****EDIT- I am giving it 9.5 stars now and taking back the above review regarding the vertical stand. I wasn't using it right. I looked at the picture and found that you have to use the horizontal stand to sturdy the vertical one. Did that and it was great.****
Overall I give this thing 9.5 out of 10 stars. The half star is missing because the vertical setup is still a little slanted but not majorly. I think it serves as a great case and gives confidence that it will protect the case. The memory card holders are cool and the fact that you can clasp the cover around the back so it doesn't dangle while using is great.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hmmm, I don't think it would but I had a screen protector so I didn't even think about it. I think everyone should put a screen protector on anyway but I think the cardholder has soft edges and will not scratch.

[REVIEW][PICS] Nillkin Ultra Slim Hard Shield Faceplate

Today i received the case and again i want so share some thoughts about it.
(let me say it right here: this is the best case ive seen so far and i can recommend it to everyone that is searching for a very slim case with considerable protection)
ORDER
i ordered the case from Obostore. it took 7 days for shipping...quite good for free international shipping. they also give discount if you order several pieces.
MATERIAL
i expected some regular plastic case but actually it is something i would describe as rubberized plastic.
makes the phone definitively way less slippery.
as far as i can tell it doesn't attract dust.
FIT
it fits perfectly and the cutouts on the side are made well. the phone fits very tight and doesn't move in the case (like in the zenus skin air jacket i reviewed some pages ago)
PROTECTION
if you are searching for an everyday-protection against scratches and some little drops this case should be your choice.
as you can see on the pictures the top and bottom of the phone are not covered by the plastic.
but that doesn't bother me because (unlike the samsung mesh-case) it fully covers the corners of the phone.
so if it drops on flat ground it will be fully protected. (not from great hight of course)
quite hard to explain but i tried to show it to you in the pictures below.
i tilted the phone to 45° and then take a shot that is showing that there is still some space between phone and surface (light coming through).
the camera is also covered very good so no scratches should get on it.
SCREEN PROTECTOR
the case came with a free screen protector from nillkin. i don't have any reference but i think its pretty good.
(although i messed it up by having a little airbubble in the down right corner. my fault.... )
CONCLUSION
this is by far the best case i have seen or used so far.
sure there are some cases with better protection but in my opinion they often add too much bulk and mess with the great look an slimness of the phone.
so i can fully recommend this case to you!
(if you liked this review please show by hitting the thanks-button)
(and sorry again for the bad picture-quality )

I also have one, and am very happy with it, but they seem to have a minor design flaw.
Doesn't really affect the usability of the case, hell, I didn't even notice it until someone on another forum pointed it out, and I doubt I ever would have if they hadn't.
what flaw are you talking about?
(although it may be better if you never tell me )
1 of the sides did not flush well with the phone when facing up.
Looks like the cutting is slightly off will gradual abscess from top going to the bottom.
Its pretty obvious if u see it at an angle.
Only seems to be an issue with the black case
The white one I got seems to fit fine
Sorry, photos aren't very clear

I also have the one in OP but chose red instead of black. I have to say it's pretty awesome. The color looks classy and the case fits just fine.
I like the rubberized texture. Without it, I always felt like the phone was going to slip right off my hand. Now not so much. Plus it almost doesn't add any thickness (I'd say around 1.5 mm at most).
Very happy.
Be careful with unprotective cases, barely there cases and only rear protecting cases

Here it is the white one, after few weeks of usage.
h t t p://imgur.com/a/LnGKp - sorry i can't post links yet (new user)
I have the phone for 2 montsh now, but i have 2 other type of case and using a different one all the time. The first 2 week was fine, no coloration at all, but at the 3rd week the brown coloration happened, which was my pocket. And the funny part is, i am carrying it in my pocket for 40min each (work)day.
The way i imagine this case:
- hard plastic
- soft touch overlay
- some thin protecting layer
No coloration in the first few weeks, but after the ""protecting layer"" wear down, the case started picking up everything. I tried to clean it, no luck.
Lastly, i really don't know what are those pink spots, or where do they came from. (It's not the camera )
I've one of these cases too.
The first thing I did was to use my fingernail to scratch away the NILLKIN words. Took me just 2 min, and I had a perfectly blank back for the case.
How good it fits to the phone? Does this case scratch the phone?
Thanks!

[Review] Brushed Aluminum Battery covery, Gold (looks more orange to me)

This was not received purposely, my guess is that they packaged up the items and mistakingly sent me somebody elses cause the tracking number they sent me doesn't match what's on the package. I ordered a white carbon fiber battery cover. But I gotta tell ya, this thing is DEAD SEXY! I'm not even mad that I didn't get what I paid for.

Fit and finish:
The finish is beautiful! I'd say the cover is a bit darker than pictured...when I seen it I didn't think gold I though burnt copper. Very nice color and it's accented with the vertical brush marks which makes it look even better. The cherries on top are the chrome trim around the bezel and the chrome trim around the camera/speaker/flash openings. Also, no gaudy "Galaxy S III" name on the back, it has the SAMSUNG logo embossed on the back and it looks like it was machined, polished aluminum. Very nice! Snapping it on to my phone I was impressed at how precise the fit is. The camera is flush with it's opening with the speaker and flash recessed and looking nice with the chrome trim surrounding them. The chrome bezel lines up perfectly with the bezel of the front side of the phone and doesn't clash nearly as much as I thought it would, it blends in nicely. The charger port cut out is spot on as is the headphone jack cutout. After I stopped drooling the first thing I noticed is added weight makes the GS3 feel much more substantial and solid. So far so good.
Cases:
The only cases I have right now are a Fosmon S type TPU and an Incipio Silicrylic Dual Pro. Apparently this cover adds a little girth cause the TPU case didn't work out. I got it on but it would not wrap around the screen on both sides, one side would but the other would just reach to the edge of the bezel. No bueno. The Incipio fit, but it's very tight. That being said, case fit will be hit or miss.
Functionality:
One concern was signal interference. Cell signal strength seems uneffected but wifi is weaker by 1 bar at the furthest point in my house from my router. I haven't tested NFC yet but will later on. Mobile data connection hasn't seemed to take a hit, based on the updates I just completed for a few apps. Haven't tested bluetooth yet either. So far any signal degredation is minimal and insignificant.
This is the first time I'm actually happy the company messed up my order!
I've been wanting to snag one of these, thanks for the write up!

My bad
The black aluminium back cover I have seems to be killing signal pretty badly, or I'm getting really unlucky after my water incident.

SlickWraps Carbon Fiber Skins for Samsung Galaxy S III Review

Smartphones these days are not only “smart,” but extremely thin. Why cover up a thin phone with a bulky case when you can rock the phone naked? For protection of course. But maybe you’re one of those people who want protection while maintaining a sleek profile. Thanks to companies like SlickWraps, you can now enhance both the looks and protection of your Samsung Galaxy S III. Today, I’ll be covering the Blue Carbon Fiber Skins by SlickWraps. Retailing for a measly $19.95, the Carbon Fiber Series Skins come in 7 different carbon fiber patterned colors and offer near full body protection. Read all about them after the break.
Video Review
Installation
I’ve tried carbon fiber vinyls like these for other devices(i.e: iPhone 4), and they were simply fantastic. Whether it be installation or looks, they just worked. I can’t say that at all for the Carbon Fiber skins from SlickWraps for the Galaxy S III. Installing these was not only challenging, but mind wrecking. I’m not really OCD, but I like things to look good if possible. I tried my best to install the skins perfectly, but I found out they weren’t 100% accurately cut like they say. As a result, I had issues getting a perfect installation done. When I had some things perfectly aligned, the skin was disproportionate in another area. I watched all the tutorials and nothing! On the installation video, SlickWraps used a Pebble Blue S3 and the same Blue Carbon Skin. Because blue and black blend well with each other, imperfections aren’t easily noticed. With the Marble White S3, however, the blue carbon fiber contrasted well with the white. Since this is the case, any imperfections stood out. Even after having read all instructions, at the end, I realized that installing these perfectly is simply impossible. It may just be that the Galaxy S III specifically is a bit harder to design for when it comes to skins.
Protection

The skins give an almost full body coverage. Unfortunately, the side pieces don’t go all the way up around the chrome top or bottom of the phone. I don’t know why they decided to this, but this leaves the areas most likely to be dropped on, unexposed. A phone, if dropped, usually lands on the corners, but the fact that they’re exposed is not great protection wise at all whatsoever. Also, these skins are relatively thin. Meaning, shock protection is nonexistent. The only protection you’ll be getting with these skins is basic scratch protection on the areas it covers.
Modifications
I made some modifications to the back portion of the skin. When the cutouts for the camera, led flash, and speakers were aligned, the skin was unbalanced. To remedy the issue, I used some little scissors to trim a bit of the skin around the edges. I also took the side pieces off because they didn’t align or match well with the back and front piece at all. Having done these two mods, the phone looked much better than previously. If you’re coinsidering buying a set of SlickWraps for the S3, taking some modifications like I did, may improve your experience.
Sensor Issues
As I said before, the cutouts aren’t perfect. When one cutout is aligned, another one may not be. On the front skin, when everything is fully aligned, the sensors are not. A little portion of the skin will cover the sensors, so using the phone during a call will be an annoying experience. If you need to press speaker or use your phone at all, you won’t be able to. The screen is pitch black until your phone call ends. Also, you can’t end it yourself…
Design
I absolutely love how these look despite its flaws. Carbon Fiber just looks great and adds a nice touch to any device in my opinion. Specifically, the carbon fiber in blue just looks sparking. Literally. When the surface of the skin hits a light source, it shines and looks phenomenal. The patterns just strike at you. Overall, the skins look great.
Conclusion
After taking everything about these skins into consideration, I really can’t recommend them. If you wouldn’t mind making some mods like I did, it’ll become much more usable. But honestly, they are more hassle than pleasure. For $20, you’d be better off getting a functional case, even if bulk may not be your thing.

Keep in mind, I did do some slight cutting to the back piece around the edges. Normally, it'll go all the way to the sides. I found them to be too long so that's why I decided to cut it.
That cutout alignment is unfortunate
man that looks horrible to tell you the truth. I think its a waste of money, just go with a case and a colored screen protector.
ugly.
front looks nice. but back no

It's just 3m dinoc cut to a template...not worth $20 and most likely not going to protect the phone.

I know this thread is stale, but I'm curious if anyone has had any luck with the dbrand (or any other skin) on this device? I normally love dbrand, but on the Nextbit I found the fit to be pretty terrible. I don't like how it comes up around the edges, since the fit around the buttons and the edge of the screen wasn't precise. My previous phone the fit was perfect, so I was pretty disappointed with the fit on this Nextbit phone. I tried to use a razor and make the edges square to the back, but I'm not the most competent arts and crafts guy, so I kind of butchered it.

I applied a bamboo back and black top and bottom the other day and I kind of agree with you there, this phone is not the best to use with dbrand.
I had to apply a bit of tension and stretch it out in some parts when applying the top and bottom parts so it wouldn't show any red (I have the Ember edition) but you can always still see some. Midnight versions might look better regarding this I think.
Also re-did the top and bottom last week, this time went full bamboo, and tried to be a bit more careful, and I must say, although still not perfect, it looks a lot better than the first one I tried. I say try to peel it off and use the spare ones they also send, this time trying to be a bit more careful and making sure everything is 100% symmetrical (this part is a big pain in the ass) and you may get a little luckier this time!

How is the power button white? Does it come with a sticker for it or does it just look like that because of the angle the picture was taken in?
