Wifi hot spot? VZW... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey can someone confirm whether the stock wifi hotspot feature works on the Verizon galaxy nexus without having to add a tethering plan?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

When I select to turn it on, it runs through a "checking for subscription" then pops up an Error window that I'm not authorized to run it and have to call Customer Service. It was the first thing I tried as soon as I walked out of the VZW store this morning.

I'd like to know this as well. Chances are though, you have to be rooted and the hotspot app will have to be hacked for it to be used without detection check by VZW. I am with Sprint OG Samsung Epic, and these were the necessary steps to get Sprint hotspot to work without having a plan. I am sure a dev will be able to get it done in time. In the meantime, suggest rooting and using either Barnacle tether or Wifi Tether, or if you want to stay stock: PDANet.

After root - wired tether will work.
After root - WiFi tether will NOT work. It has the 'blocktether' thing on there.

Ouch. Any available apps/workarounds to enable wireless tether? This is a make-or-break issue for me right now in terms of getting the phone.

Framework patch. Give it a week. Or just pay for it.

At this moment, you'll need an LTE rom or patch that disables the 'blocktether' methinks. I am running stock for the rest of the week, so I cannot test - apologies.

That's not the problem. Not being able to tether could potentially be a dealbreaker for some people (myself included).

Its blocked. You've got to root and remove the software they have for tracking tethering. Or wait for a CDMA custom ROM to come out that has unblocked tethering.

Anyone tried this app ht tp://goo.gl/LZCZO or the paid version ? Can't believe VZW sucks so bad, makes sense now why the phone was delayed so long... Google arguing against VZW breaking and crippling their beautiful OS. But I just bought one this morning and being delivered tomorrow.

Using a 3rd party app doesn't remove Verizon's tracking software. They'll still see you're doing it based on my experiences w/ VZW phones...

I'm assuming you guys have tried Google's Wireless Tether app. No dice?

Not letting people steal bandwidth is not crippling the OS. Don't get me wrong I think paying for tethering is beyond retarded but it is a paid service that they offer there is no reason for them to give it away for free.

People aren't "stealing" bandwidth. They're paying for it and using it. This isn't even an argument in a world of capped data plans. If you pay for 2GB or 4GB or 10GB+, you're buying that bandwidth from VZW. Its yours to use. And carriers are being beyond ridiculous, forcing consumers to pay for data twice.
And it is crippling (albeit thats a bit dramatic) the OS. ICS (and 2.2, 2.3) has wired/wireless tethering enabled. Removing that, is removing a feature that used to make the OS whole.

Just to clear the air -
Currently - no matter what App you use, you cannot WiFi tether.
Verizon is blocking ALL WiFi tether - you will need to remove the check.

Thanks for the update. What are the chances that this check can be removed? I know people with the Bionic were having problems tethering (still not sure if they can).
This is a deal breaker for me, so I'm hoping it isn't something too complicated for the devs to remove.
P.S. Let's not turn this into a morality thread. This is a place to discuss whether or not you can get WiFi tethering working without paying extra for it.

This is a huge problem, I need to tether by next Thursday.

Tethering

Based on VZW's policies, can we expect tethering be enabled out of the box? If not, I am sure it will be hacked in minutes but is VZW detecting it and charging for it?
So far, AT&T doesn't seem to know/care about my occasional WiFi tethering on my Captivate.

Verizon can only see how much data you are using not if you are tethered. They have publicly said that they are starting to throttle the highest 5% of users which I believe they have said are those who use over 5 GB per month, or was it 2 GB can't remember off hand what they said it actually was.
You should be able to use Easy Tether, forget the name of the other tethering app available, right off the bat without rooting. Of course I'm not sure if these apps are ICS compatible or if that even matters. None of Verizons crap will be on the phone so their hotspot app will be missing but thats a pay for data plan anyways.
you should be able to use the stock tethering built into android right out of the box, because well if its locked cause of the carrier it wouldnt be a true stock android experience

True stock android has tethering out of the box, but VZW may get to put their tethering app on the phone. They were able to get their app put onto the iPhone 4 and 4S after all.
Yea but were not talking about apple. I dont think google will go for that crap. I mean if use my dx to tether to my transformer i using the same amount of data i would be using on my phone. It should be illegal to charge twice for data and a native capability of the device.

I know we're not talking about Apple but they have the same history of not allowing carriers to put any of their applications on their phones as well so if Verizon manages to still get their hotspot put on Apple's phone there is a chance it could appear on the Nexus. Not that it'll stop any of us from working around it.

The Sprint Nexus s 4g had there sprint app for tethering
But it was unlocked at least on 3g...
There have been a couple phones in the past that came with free tethering. The Palm Pixi was one and some Android device came with it. Now granted they were crap phones and probably would have never otherwise but perhaps Verizon will offer this with the Nexus?

ugh. you ammericans dont know your internet and phone rights i see?
thetering will be there. standard on your GN.
and if you see aVZW app on it.Ask google about it,if VZW did make a special deal.
also ask if the GN is a Block C device!
cuz for both reasons. VZW may not! put bloat on it and charge you for thetering.
and if the asumptions are right. the GN will be a Block C device.(if not made a special deal. but again.if its a Block C device. it may not even put bloat nor extra charges )
just like the thunderbolt. that shows that VZW broke the law.
there was a news item about it on XDA(block C)

Yep. Verizon users need to check if the lte version you get is block c. If so, you should be able to tether, and possibly use all the data you want. Verizon bought the block where restrictions arent allowed and are trying to renege on it. Get the fcc involved to get verizon to comply.
I voided my warranty and your nexus.

Verizon LTE is block C (band 13). AFAIK, they don't operate LTE in any other bands.
From the little ive read about it, it seem like it was implied verizon has other bands available. It seems credible as only phone to
Use block c so far is the thunderbolt. I think they have data devices also under block c. I dont know what their other phones use. Did not dig that deep cuz i dont use verizon and really dislike the company.

Just the C block has the open access provisions. And a quick correction from before, Verizon does have more than just the C block for LTE. They also picked up parts of lower A and B blocks but they aren't nationwide and will probably be used to provide extra capacity in certain metropolitan areas. So all their LTE devices should have at least the C block.

[q] please help! Hotspot question

I have a rooted GN (Sprint) and have the wifi hotspot app from google. Works perfect but for ****s and giggles I just tried to enable the built in Hotspot on my phone...and it worked?? I called sprint and they said I did not have the add on and it should not be working. My question is when I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone, did I unblock the hotspot and allow it to be used with no penalty from Sprint?
If someone would get back to me I would appreciate it greatly and pass out some thanks.
I don't see how the built in tethering could be blocked by you having it on your plan or not. The most I could see happening would be redirecting web requests to a page asking you to add it, or you getting a phone call from Sprint after using it. Your phone doesn't know what your plan is, so why would it not allow you to turn on the built in tethering feature?
well on my E4GT SII, When I tried to use my hotspot it would just not allow me to connect anything to it. With this one on the GNex, it allows me to connect my devices to it and use data, but without redirection or anything else. So paranoia is setting in and I dont want to see rediculous charges, but since I never received any warning so I guess they cannot charge me for anything.
Thanks for the info.

Envy you!!!
Lucky you. Since your rooted I guess it ignores your limitations on your plans. How bout you test something else that your not allowed to use due to plan limitations if there are any others.
If so.... I hate you!!! I wanna bypass the limitations!!!!! DX
BUT NICE!!!
P.S. I JUST TRIED ACTIVATING MY HOTSPOT ON MY VERIZON GALAXY NEXUS AND IT WORKED!!!! And it is not on the the plan. Also depending on ur Rom, some roms bypass the restrictions, allowing you free access to this wonderful and magical feature!!! Use freely with no worries but overages, but you got sprint, so ur worry free!!!
So to conclude. Use it and don't tell your carrier with out fear of being billed.

Really?!?!?!
Did they tell you that??? Cuz I know ur not getting billed unless u said ur doing or asking to check if you are using it.
On my Carrier they never told me once I was using it or billed me. And I've been using an app that just breaks the restrictions as long as it's open. So Verizon should see me using it unauthorize.
I know they can tell you. But the real question is, will you get billed if you never mention you are using???
Cuz I've done my research on this a few months back and they never bill you unless u ask em about and actually dig in and see that specific thing.

Typically you can "end-around" the restrictions on tethering and creating mobile hotspots, but carriers are getting increasingly savvy about detecting this (though there is not a great deal of intelligence about the exact methods used by each carrier) and ultimately shuffling customer into plans that include tethering. If you choose to go down this path, I would recommend using it sparingly, and prepare for the possibility of a plan change.
Thanks!

They won't change it automatically, at first. They will send you a nice letter advising you are tethering and currently do not have a plan that supports it. I used it 1 day for an hour recently and got the letter. I have unlimited data and think they are specifically targeting these plans to get us off of them.

Will the 5X have tether restrictions out of the box?

Just curious if people think we can tether freely out of the box on the 5X. I'm on Verizon, grandfathered Unlimited Data and I know on the Moto X Pure 2015 you could just pop your sim card in and tether without editing anything in the build.prop or whatever file it was.
I know there is no Verizon software baked in to the rom obviously, but I've heard default android can include a subscription check or something similar in the tethering for this sort of thing.
I believe tethering restrictions are based on the carrier back-end and not the phone. On T-Mobile USA, I was able to tether with my N6 without any problems.
Verizon actively restricts tethering on their branded devices by locking the bootloader. As the nexus is not branded by or sold by verizon, you should be able to tether without issue.

Just got my 5x today and unfortunately no, tethering does not work (on Verizon - I also have the grandfathered unlimited plan). I'm still looking into a work around (you can use FoxFi, which doesn't require rooting), but I'd rather have it through the ROM. I am considering rooting. However, I'm not sure if we know the long-term consequences of the setting off the QFuse.
Anyone know of a way to tether (without rooting - until we know more about QFuse)?
I am able to set up wifi hotspots from mine on AT&T without issue. I don't have a device handy to test out USB tethering but I don't know why that would be any different.

Hotspot worked on Nexus 5. Pixel XL now checks for a subscription. Whats different?

I never had a hotspot subscription, but my mobile hotspot seemed to work perfectly on my Nexus 5. Never did I see "checking for subscription" on my Nexus 5.
Today, after activating my nano SIM, I go to try mobile hotspot and now my Pixel XL checks for an AT&T subscription. This is a bummer since I have an unlimited data plan.
I understand that this is a service AT&T wants to sell, but I'm confused as to what the differences between the two phones are. Both phones are bought from Google directly.
Also, do any of you know of an app which can create a hotspot?
Thanks in advance.
This has come up over and over since the Nexus 6. Android itself now has it built into the back end to check with the carrier for hotspot provisioning. Some carriers don't care. Most do.

For those of you still on UDP still, you have to be aware at this point that VZW doesn't really like that you still have it which is why they keep raising your prices. You're just giving them a really good reason to kick you off that plan tier by violating your ToS. Yes they can do this. Keep skirting it if you'd like but don't be surprised if it happens. The carriers can see what type of traffic is passing through the device. This how TMO caught people on old legacy plans before they started giving away hotspot.
I'm sure a workaround will pop up at some point but I've experienced it myself and known a few other people that lost old legacy plans this way.

A representative at AT&T said this is a common problem with unlocked phones (One Plus owners specifically), and they have resolved this issue in the past. We'll see how far she gets. If she does not find a solution, I'll have to consider other options.

You can use this trick to get the hotspot going on your phone without root. I have tried it on my Pixel XL with ATT. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69229666&postcount=35
The Network Signal Refresher app you will need is here. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atejapps.networksignalrefresher&hl=en My N6 checked with the death star for hotspot permission. Rooting the N6 and modifying two files had me tethering all I wanted. It is nice to be able to tether without root using the network app. If you tether up a storm, ATT may very well send you a text. One of the files that got modified on the N6 told the phone not to send all the tethering data through a specific tethering path via ATT. So even though you can get a hotspot on the Pixel, it will be easy for ATT to know you are tethering.
