100% to nearly dead in 5.5 hours with no usage at all - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So my battery life so far has been hugely inconsistent. The first day it was draining so fast (60% in an hour) that I contemplated turning around and taking it right back to the Verizon store.
I decided to give it a better chance than that and gave it a full conditioning cycle and all seemed well - I got 16 hours with moderate usage including an hour and a half where my screen was constantly on! I was very pleased. Extremely pleased.
So I charge my phone back up to 100% before I go to sleep then take it off the charger once it does. I drift off into dreamland, dead to the world, and five hours later I decided to check my phone for calls, texts and email.
Before I could even pull my notification bar down I saw something horrific - an extremely low battery capacity, nearly red. Checked battery usage and it said it went from 100% to 13% in about 5.5 hours.
Android OS - 64%
Phone Idle - 10%
This is the big indicator. Under Android OS, my phone (not the display) was kept awake for an hour and a half overnight. I'm really not sure what's going on here and what's causing this to happen. I haven't downloaded much - 1 game, Skype, Google Reader, Facebook, Tweetcaster, Evernote and Foursquare - and none of them showed any signs of being the culprit.
As you can tell, this is very worrisome. If I can't get more than 5.5 hours on a full charge what use is this phone to me? Does anyone know what could be going on or has anyone else run into this issue?

You're not the only one.

Battery Life

I've had the phone since Sept 6th and this is 4th day I have my phone.
My battery life has been draining like crazy. I don't have a data plan, but I do go on wifi sometimes (not very often, and I don't keep it on for long). Maybe in total an hour to two a day.
I wouldn't say I am a heavy user, I don't play any games or watch any videos nor listen to music at all. I only sms and download apps.
It's been 5h 42m 35s since unplugged and my battery life is down to 57. I hardly use it, my settings are pretty much the lowest.
It says
Android System 40%
Cell standby 21%
Phone idle 13%
Display 12% (weird, since I have animations are turned off and I used lowest brightness)
Camera 6% (I took 3 photos)
Wifi 4%
Maps 2%
Dialer 2%
about 2 hours ago, I rooted my desire since I've read reviews that it makes it faster, prolongs battery life and what not. (plus I could do so much more with it later on). But my battery was still draining at like 1% every minute and half that I touch it. (I also have task killer, but I don't kill task very often)
Then my friend suggested I get SetCPU (which I did) around 2 hours ago after I rooted my phone. Then I went out and hardly touched the phone unless I received sms, or to check the time. And it went from like 69 to 56 (within that 2 hours of doing nothing)
I've searched the forum for extending battery life (and googled as well) and read other users who have the same problem, and I pretty much did what was recommended but it's still draining.
I can hardly make it through the day!!
Is there any other way that I can charge it (when to charge it) or.. do you think it might be my battery's problem? Should I buy a new one?
Thanks for all the help again (I know this kind of thread has already been done, but that was in like April)
Your battery takes time to settle if it's a brand new device. It takes a few charge/discharge cycles for that.
If after say 14 days you are still getting poor life I'd try calibrating it. Instructions are HERE.
thanks! i will try that if my battery life still drains this crazily in a week.

[Q] Do I have a faulty device.?

So I had several calls yesterday for over 30 mins each..
Each time i would hear echoy sound of my voice, and i also feel like i could hear the voice coming out of the phone lol, even though the phone isnt on speaker.
I also my have a bad battery it'll go pretty low i guess. Yesterday was my first full day using it, went to work at 70% since i forgot to charge it, at noon unplugged it's at 100% came home around 9 and got 10% left. , so i got 9 hours in total, from calls. light browsing, light twitter, facebook use.. I havent even setup my work email, and i constantly get over 100+ emails a day on my account. So i know battery will go significantly
Should I wipe everything clean and see if it works.. I have 14 days to return for a new one.
also today left my house at 7:30.. it 9:50 now and already at 75%...
I think someone else on here had similar issue with having an echo when speaking into the phone. If im not mistaken they exchanged it and the new one did not have the problem. Maybe you should take it in for an exchange.
As far as battery life, well it seems to be varying from user to user. I am getting pretty good battery life, anywhere from 12-15 hours on a charge with medium use. On light use I get well over 15 hours. There are some that seem to be having poor battery life. Have you checked your battery stats? Whats your android OS % at? And what is your screen on time? Have you turned on ECO mode?

Assuming you dont have a lemon, it all depends on how you use your phone.
Do you have lots of apps with push notifications?
Or do you have lots of apps that check for new notifications every 10 minutes?
Screen brightness? Screen-on time?
What radios do you have on?
...the list goes on
On a typical day, I can get about 12 hours with moderate use (3 hrs screen on time). Close to 24 hours with light use. Mine idles pretty well (approx 1% or less battery loss per hour).
FWIW - my 'Android OS' is usually at around 50% and screen is at about 25%

Facebook every hour
Twitter every 15 mins,
Work email every 1 hour
I do have ESPN scorescenter, Pandora, Google Music, Spotify as a widget, but their notifications are set to none. Will this drain battery on the screen.?
Screen brightness is at 20%, outside 55%.
Where do I check Screen on time.?
Wifi, BT, GPS, NFC are all off. Only thing on is the 3g network.
Right now 6 hours, im at 63%.

Doesn't seem like a lemon to me. Falls somewhat in line with my battery experience.
You can check screen on time by going to the power saver in settings, scroll down to battery use and hit that. Then hit 'screen'

Yeah - I never turned those on or used any kind of juice defender either (thought I am on Wifi alot). I think you're fine.
Try this - fully charge your phone before you go to bed. Leave it off the charger over night. See how much your battery drops. Even with a few google accounts on push, facebook messenger push, instagram push, LG social+ and a couple of news readers that auto-update every few hours, I've seen my battery drop at most 5% over 7 hours.

yesterday i went to long island and lasted maybe 8 hours because i was using it heavily..but then charged it at their house to 80% and after 11 hours i was down to 9%.. with light-medium use

Battery usage

My battery stats have improved greatly by turning off location completely.
Took it off charge at 6am and with heavy usage
YouTube internet calls etc
still have 65% 16.5 hrs later.:good:
Just starting to play with battery use on my new G5. 100% charged 10 hours ago just before bed.
On a day to day basis i am a pretty light user. Calls and texts mainly.
Left phone unpluggged so it slept and 7 1/2 hours layer its at 93%.
20 mins music and email checking 19 hours in its at 88%.
Have Greenified much in the way of apps which i think improved things. Compared to the Sony i had the G5 seems to have ok battery life.
Its certainly in the useful, full day and better range.

Is yours rooted? I tend to get 5+ hours screen on time sometimes 7 which is amazing for a phone this cheap.
Same here, I have about 4-5 hours of screen on time with greenify, non-rooted. I'm a regular user, messenger, emailing, browsing, spotify etc. I'm also using Adguard which has its impact on the battery but a small price compared to having ads all over the place

Nope, no root as yet. And actually i may not depending on what ROMS become available in the future. Pretty happy with the way this is setting up and Android 7.0 stock. I think i may well leave it unrooted until after Android O hits and see where i go from there.
i'm rooted and the battery is very good, i got 7,5 hours SOT, usually i have 5-6 H of calls and 3H of SOT, 2 sims active, wifi and 4g always on, and the battery is 20-25% when i put on charging from evening to the morning. Very happy with this battery

Very good battery for price of the handset
I don´t know it´s a isolated case, but since i bought the phone, the battery is pretty bad, yesterday i tried to charge with another power adapter and my battery it´s lasting longer, anyone have this same problem?
Sometimes this happens to me.
When i keep my phone overnight(Battery Saver ON) even wid a charge of 60-70%, next day mrng, the battery is completely drained and phone is OFF. This doesnt happen daily, happens only sometimes. Any guesses why dis happens?

Bought new Z play/kind of disappointed with the battery life

Hello all,
I bought a new Z play to replace my ageing phone, and I have mixed feelings about the battery life. The phone has received universal praise for its battery life, and while some of it is true in my case, I can't seem to get those high SoT numbers that everyone brags about.
It's very difficult for me to break the 6h SoT barrier, and I consider myself a light user: whatsapp, browsing, some reddit, and the occasional music (through headphones). I don't play any games, or perform heavy tasks. Also the phone is connected to WiFi 85% of the time, get decent signal, and the screen is set on auto-brightness.
Running latest version of the stock rom, and I performed factory reset + wiped cache + reset network settings countless times as per suggestions.
Attached some stats for 50% that I just took.
Is there something I'm missing?
Take it with a grain of salt, just because people brag about numbers does not mean they are real or obtainable by everyone. Battery life will vary for every user and phone. The time you have is in the acceptable range and I would not worry.
Yes, even I have never achieved the 8-9+ hrs of SOT that's I've seen in some threads. Based on my usage I get a minimum of 6.5hr SOT with the phone lasting a good 25-27 hours before I have to plug it back in.
Since the phone is new it might take a few cycles for the battery to truly show its stamina.
Those answer are definitely right. It all varies on the users. . Also please makes sure you have bluetooth and wifi scanning off. (Location> Scanning > Bluetooth & Wifi Scanning) Another factor is apps. Get rid of facebook and facebook messenger. Apps that use GCM eat battery like a range rover eats gas. I've hit 8--10 hr of SOT before. Let your phone get use to your daily activities. I believe it'll optimize itself over time.
It's normal.
I was also getting earlier 5-6 hrs SOT(When the device was new) but not I'm getting 8-9 hrs SOT.
So as your phone is new it might take few cycles for the battery to show its full stamina!
Cheers!!
Thanks for the replies and for putting my mind at ease.
Bluetooth and wifi scanning are off (forgot to mention that).
Anyway, I understand. Those insane SoT of 10+ are best case scenarios with careful use of the device. Still happy with my current capacity (anything which lasts until the next morning is great).
And yep, the phone manual (who reads those anymore), did mention the battery taking a few cycles before reaching its capacity.
Now, for a different issue. If I'd like to disable turbocharging/quickcharging my phone, would a USB C to A cable coupled with any charger (including the quickcharging ones) do the trick? Based on my understanding, the cable limits the chargining power, so any regular (quality) C to A cable should restore normal charging speeds even when using a fast charging charger. In case you're wondering why I'd like to do that, it's because the phone gets way too hot for my liking when using the Moto turbocharger and I'd like to reserve that for when necessary.
Well, guyz do have a point.
The screenshots are showing you have almost 3hrs SoT after day and a half. This is normal.
Those >10 hrs of SoT aren't achieved with careful usage. Coming from my experience, I got 10.5 hrs SoT with 10% battery left, BUT, in one day. My Moto can last up to 3 day with one charge, but in those 3 days I'll have maybe 4hrs SoT. So, in average, my Moto lasts up to 2 days with 6/7hrs SoT (I mostly use FB, Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, YT, Instagram, stock 6.0.1). It simply depends how you use it. That big, almost 11hrs SoT, I could only achieve on weekends, coz otherwise I don't have the time to stare in my phone so much.
On that other thing, Moto does get pretty hot while charging. And you're right, the cable does limit the charging power so it will probably work.
I was one of those users getting 10h SoT early on. But I was doing that inside a 24h usage window. Your 50% stats have you stretched out to like almost 3 days off charger. Idle time vs. screen on time is ALWAYS a trade-off.
I look at battery drain in terms of drain rate at idle, and drain rate with screen on. Early on I was seeing 6% drain per hour of screen on, and 1-1.5% per hour screen off. So basically 5 hours of idle time costs you 1 hour screen on. Those were my numbers on the original MM build. My battery life has gotten worse with every software update. I have NOT done a factory reset, mostly because I don't want the hassle and I still get a day off normal use with plenty of battery to spare. But I usually see 18h off charger and 3-4h SoT in a normal day, and that leaves me at 40-50% when I plug in.
Looking at your stats, if screen on costs you 6% per hour, you have 17% worth of screen on drain. That leaves 33% idle drain over 38 hours, or sightly less than 1% per hour idle. Seems pretty darn good to me.
Your cell signal is definitely not helping your battery life. Switch to 2g when on wifi, your signal bar should be full and it'll probably help your battery life.
Enjoy the fact that this phone lets you keep BT/WiFi scanning/Facebook/etc. on without having to worry whether or not you're going to make it a full day. I use all that stuff, have multiple live widgets updating, brightness at least half way, T-Mobile Digits running, and still make it a full day. Additionally, it's great to know that if you do have to make it 2-3 days with minimal usage because you don't have a charger handy, you can. However, I'm willing to bet that 99% of users are able to charge their phone daily. To those users, I say enjoy all the features and don't worry about it.
Really depends on the screen brightness...I can hit those number with my screen brightness turned down a good bit...probably around 30 percent and auto sync off...if i have brightness anywhere above 60 percent then battery life drops a good amount...still well enough to get me through a 12 hour work day but there is a difference

Is the battery life normal or is this a serious problem?

I've a brand new Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite, but since a few days I notice that it seems that the battery is draining fast.
So I've done a test: I've charged my phone to 100% and used it until it turned off due to too low battery and it lasted 23 hours and 3 minutes.
But I doubt if this is normal and I'm kinda worried about it.
I've bluetooth off, and wifi is always on except when I go outside and then I use mobile data.
I use my phone for surfing, using social media, chatting, gaming, making nice pics and more.
So is the battery life normal or is this a serious problem?
is 23hr bad ? I feel like my one is always above 80% as it charges that fast I don't seem to notice the battery being low

I dunno
I haven't mentioned the standby time and the active time in the topic, and I cannot find that data anymore so that means I have to do the test again
I would advise to install AccuBattery app, fully charge the phone and look at screen off and screen on power consumption at the end of the day.
These numbers are "normal":
Screen off - no activity (over night or phone just laying down for a few hours): 0.2-0.3%/h
Screen off - the usual daily activity (moving around with the phone in the pocket, Whatsapp for web active, Google location tracking active etc.): up to 1.3%/h
Screen on - about 7-9%/h
I'll do another test on Friday as I said.
I'll charge the phone to 100% and use it until the phone turns itself off due to low battery and look at the active time then.
I'll post the results here if the test is done.
What were the results?

My phone is pretty new and I am using it more frequently these days. This leads to similar battery times like you describe them.
I did not do the exact same discharging like you did, but imo battery drains mainly during screen-on time. Over night it is quite stable and only slowly discharging.
Maybe power consumption is dominated by the LED screen? This might be the reason why Xiaomi has such an aggressive screen dimming implemented...
I think what _mysiak_ is describing above, is pretty accurate and explains what you are observing.

Unless your trying to calibrate the battery that's really stressful to the battery to use it like that.
Puts a lot of wear on it... fast.

I'm now trying to keep my battery level between 90% and 40% or 30%.
