Defects to watch out for - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Mail ordered my nexus and wanted to know what defects to look out for that would warrant a return for another. (also, anyone know if replacements are refurbs? I refuse to shell out $300 for a refurb!)
My Watchlist so far:
Display tinting red, green, or blue in sections
Overwashed "linen yellow" whites
Speaker issues
Battery "awake time" bug
These seem to be specific to a "bad" device and would like to know other issues that mean I got a bum unit that should be returned...

None of those you can do anything about.

Hmm, why do you say? These issues are not consistent across all units. Some have reported not having these issues, so it seems to vary unit to unit.

Some of those issues are user tolerance too.

I can say from personal experience that I've experienced all of those except for the battery bug. I've been through three phones so far, and all of them had different issues. My first phone had really bad screen banding, which is inherent to SAMOLED screens, but some are worse than others...and mine was the worst of all the phones I compared it to. The store agreed to replace it, but the next one I got had severe static over just the earpiece speaker. The store once again agreed to swap it out, and now the one I have has a ridiculous amount of red throughout the screen. At lower screen brightness (50% or less) anything that is supposed to be grey is completely purple (menus, widgets, etc). I've been told by a Verizon rep that this is something that will be fixed by a software update in the future, and is a known issue...but I think he was making it up to get me out of the store (please note that this was a different store than I had been dealing with from the start). The phone is completely awesome...as long as it's not broken!

Must have lucked out... Got mine at Best Buy on the 15th and have had NONE of the issues... Whites are white... no blue tint... After a few charges the battery has been fine... Right now my Nexus has been on for about 5 hours with light use and I'm at 88%. If i had the awake time bug it would be much lower...
Like i said, i lucked out. So for anyone with these bugs, replace it. These bugs are NOT on all units.

I am happy with my whites, but they are far from white. When I first was checking out my nexus, I thought to myself, wow the whites look really good. Then, I compare my Nexus S with SLCD, Nexus S with AMOLED, and my GN. The Nexus S with the SLCD, whites are insane, almost pure white.

My first one had issues where the touch screen was totally unresponsive after coming out of sleep. Swapped it at the store the next day, and this new one has absolutely no issues. Connectivity is great, colors are great, battery is great (Extenged battery, been off charger for 4 hours, sufed a bit, a couple of texts, and quite a few phone calls, and I'm still above 80% for battery)... I love the phone.
The guy next to me in the office though -- He's on his second one, and is getting dropped calls, dropped connections, and it's overheating to the point of making his face uncomfortable on the phone... he's going back tonight for another one. his first one wouldn't connect to 3g or 4g, and they couldn't fix it in the store.

Just use the phone like normal. If you have to seek out a "defect", then it isn't a defect. Just use the phone and enjoy it.

are these issues for only the verizon version or the GSM as well because I am debating on shipping a GSM one but I'm iffy about it because I dont want to get a defective one and wont be able to replace it or have to wait another week to get a new one.

This is one reason I purchased direct from Vzw. Now I can go into any store and raise holy hell for a replacement off the shelf.

I haven't heard of the issues on the GSM version. I'm sure the screen issues can be on all versions but have heard nothing on the other problems. I have an imported GSM version with 0 problems (besides still being on 4.0.1!)

I had 2 with bars going down the display, easy way to tell is have all white or dark grey on the screen.
I have also noticed on my current device that if I put up an all black image, I have spots around the screen where there is darker black, almost like the glue on the screen or something.

Here is a new one, when the phone us vibrating something sound a like it is loose inside the phone ..not many reports of this one tho only seen 2 so far not including mine

Yellow tint screen when viewing white pages

I bought my ET4G on Amazon and my screen has yellow tint to it when looking at white pages. Its yellowish only when looking at the screen straight,if i look at screen at an angle its normal white like it should be.Thats no good because majority of time i look at my phone straight and not at an angle. Its like it has "supper warm" temperature. My friend told me that a lot of Epics have screens like that.Im in the processes of returning it to amazon tomorrow and exchanging it for another Epic.I know that there is a chance that my next Epic will have that problem also.
My question is:
how many people on here have that screen problem and live with it?Thats what i was going to do originally but after looking at my old Epic 4G screen which looks hundred times whiter and better,i decided that i definitely need to return it.I bought ET4G mainly because of s amoled plus screen and my old Epic looks better.
Did anyone here buy their phone on Amazon and had same problem and got a normal phone when they exchanged it?Or majority of Epics are like that?
Oh,and yes i have my auto brightness off and power savings off.And its like that on every rom that i flashed so far.
Here is comparison pictures of what I'm talking about http://www.stuff-review.com/2011-11/samsung-galaxy-nexus-display-has-a-slight-yellow-tinge/
my epic didn't come like that. I always set screen mode to dynamic so maybe that's why. thy that first is the only thing I can think if short of actually replacing it. good luck and hope it works tho

A lot of people on internet have this problem,im hoping that my replacement wont.
Damn, out of all the people on here nobody got this problem?
Here is the link about what im talking about http://www.stuff-review.com/2011-11/samsung-galaxy-nexus-display-has-a-slight-yellow-tinge/ ,its like whites appear almost orange, nexus s also has this problem.I went to Sprint store and thei Epic was normal.

Yeah i know but epic have same problem, thats what mine looks like compared to my old epic 4g or other phones.
I already have replacement on the way, hopefully it was just that phone.
I have this issue with my phone (replacement from Amazon) , white are tinted yellow on the lowest brightness. The whites get less yellow as I increase the brightness. This yellow tint was really noticeable when I had it side by side with the first epic touch from Amazon, which was tinted blue, and imo looked better. It was a difficult decision to not get another replacement.
My solution was to increase the brightness a bit so the yellow is less noticeable, eventually got used to it but still notice it from time to time.
My E4GT has a bit of a blue tint. Downloaded an app called "Screen Adjuster". It's basically a RGB adjuster just like on your LCD tvs. You can even widget it to have a quick on/off feature from your home page.
I just received my replacement and its lil bit whiter but still not like phones at sprint store.Im ordering my third replacement on amazon.
I came to cocludion that alot of epics are defective with same problem but people just dont notice or just dont care. But im not just gonna live with it when my old epic 4g look 100 times better.Maybe next time i will buy from sprint store so i can see what im getting first.
My epic touch doesn't have a yellowish tint. I don't think its common

I got my whole family E4GT, 5 lines. None of ours have a yellow tint but all our screens are definitely a touch cool. Just a hair. I got our phones back in Oct 2011 so it might be batch related to recent phones?
In any case, the Screen Adjuster app has been working splendidly. I'm running mine on +5 to R channel and it gives me a nice, pure white.

Yea its probably recent batch.I read on few forums that people have same problem. Its only when looking at epic straight,if i tilt the phone little bit at any angle temerature changes to cool blue. This is probably fine for people that like exta warm temp but i prefere mine white on poin or cool with blue tint.
I tried the app and it fixes it little bit but not by much.Im gonna do another exchange and if its still a problem,im going to move to tmobile and get their version of gs2.I know that it has inferior cpu but i just wasnt something with large s amoled plus display.Amoled is selling poin for me i would never settle for lcd.I heard that motorola got s amoled that suposedly matches gs2 but i doubt motorola phones can match samsung quality.

the color profile changes with the brightness. I would guess the sprint store models have brightness at 100% or auto brightness at 100%.
It couldn't be a recent batch I got mine within 3 days of the release and its got a very slight yellow tinge to it. It really doesn't bother me though it'll hold me off until the Galaxy journal.

Nah it dont matter what brightness its on,as matter of fact screen is yellower on highest brightness then on low.
At sprint store I set both to same settings.Take a comparison look at top link I posted, its for nexus prime but all galaxy s2 varients have that defect on some phones.
My guess is that alot of people never compared ther phones to normal lcd phones or amoled phones and think its normal but its not. There is older thread on here with people having same problem
.
I remember I had same problem with my iphone 3gs(back in my days of ignorance, lol). My screen was yellow and them "geniuses" tried to convince me it was normal untill I made them compare it to every iphone that was on display-they were all normal or with bluish tint but no yellows. They had to take my phone back because every iphone they had in stock was yellow-thats how I met android, lol.

I've actually never noticed it until last week... Now I can't stop noticing it. I bought mine direct from sprint. I believe it was white when I got it and it gradually just went yellow. Its really not noticeable unless I mention it. It also goes back to clean white on full brightness.

It's not nearly as common as you make it seem... given that the stock at my store, after being sold, has never been returned for a reconditioned unit.
Then again, most of our customer base doesn't have TEP on their accounts, so they usually rely on third-party locations or gamble their finances away on Craigslist.
Keep in mind, usually it's a more promising experience to buy directly from within or at a retailer.

Yeah but average costumer dont give a f about screen quality or think that extra warm temperature is normal. As long as they can use Facebook and get apps.
I gave my old Epic 4g to my girl and put them side by side, she couldn't notice big difference(thats your average costumer) but still said her epic looked better, while all my friends said the whites appear almost orange on my new epic touch compared to my old epic 4g.
Point is:i want my screen looking cool-blue or plain white like they have them in sprint stores and not super warm-yellow-orange like mine is.
The whole point of me upgrading from epic 4g to epic touch was s amoled PLUS display,if my third replacement comes in defected then i might as well just keep my old epic 4g or even get any lcd phone because they definitely look better than this defective epic touch.

I got my replacement about 12 hours ago, and I noticed a couple of things that I thought I'd share. Firstly, it was brand-new, still sealed in the box, so yay for getting an extra battery and cable. Anyhoo...
1. The display is better... it isn't as grainy at low brightness and nothing has a purple hue.
2. It's LOUD. I'm very certain that the speaker is a lot louder than the other one. I didn't have a chance to compare them side-by-side since I sent the other one off already, but I found that noteworthy for sure. I wonder if there's something different about this one hardware-wise or something... but I thought it was a software thing?
Oh, and I picked up an Otterbox Commuter, too... $35 is a lot cheaper than another $100... haha

Better display and louder speaker huh? Interesting. Do u see any black spots on the screen on low brightness and a black screen? Like in the gallery app?

I know this is kind of OT but...
What is this grainy/purple hue everyone keeps talking about? When I first got my Sprint Gnex I noticed on low brightness there was a blue hue with color banding, but after almost a month it's pretty much disappeared. Both my Nexus S (9020t and D720) were the same way, and now after 1-1.5 years they look the exact same just dimmer or brighter. Is it just me or have I gotten EXTREMELY lucky with all 5 of my Nexus line phones?
And by the way, if anyone is unhappy with a phone you get from Asurion, give them a call and be polite but agitated, and ask for a different one. 9/10 times they'll give you a brand new phone still sealed in box. <-Just for future reference.

T-Mobile Galaxy SIII Review

The Build Quality
Color
Let's start with one of the most prominent complains about the Pebble Blue version... the color of the dedicated home button. To quickly dispel the rumors - it is *not* a different color than the rest of the phone. It is the same exact color, however the reason many people claim it is different or "purple" is because it does not have the glass covering it, so it appears to be a different shade to the untrained eye (the glass adds a slight darkness over the Blue surrounding the face of the device). There is nothing about the color of the phone that is inconsistent. It has a nice, even Blue/Gray metal tone to it, with highlights of purple depending on the light hitting it. Personally I prefer black phones, however I have become accustomed to the Pebble Blue and I can say I definitely prefer it over a white phone. All in all, very happy with the color.
Back plate
I had seen a complaint from someone in the forum that the bottom of the back plate was not completely "flush" on one side. Although it is very minor, I can report a similar finding on mine as well. It doesn't seem to be a defect really, it's just not "perfect" to those of us with phone OCD (which is probably 85% of us on XDA). Overall the back fits well - not something I am worried about. Don't care much for the design coming from the GSII and the GSM Gnex, as I was used to the awesome texture and "inset" style of those back plates, however I do find that the material the GSIII is made of seems to stick to my hands somewhat making it less likely to drop pulling it out of my pocket. I have seen some users calling it "slippery" but I would have to respectfully disagree here. I find it adheres to my hand more than any phone I have ever owned, possibly due to the coating they used on it (that may be why they coated it the way they did). Most of us will probably throw a case on this phone anyway, so it may not even be relevant for most.
"Bezel"
The "bezel" around the glass appears to be made of a different material than the rest of the phone. It looks like it potentially could have problems down the line - almost appears as if it's made with minute cracks, although I believe that is just the look of the material. However, with recent reports of some cracking happening for no apparent reason (though I cannot confirm that the user(s) did not sit on the phone or something similar to cause it) this could potentially be the Achilles Heel of the GSIII. If we see a ton of issues with this, there will be some very unhappy GSIII owners and a slew of returns/replacements. Mine has not exhibited any problems so far, but this is something I will be watching closely. Again, a case is probably going to add some protection here, which is how I intend to stave off any potential problems. One thing that really makes this phone shine is the elimination of the bezel "lip" - your finger slides right over the glass from the side/bottom/top of the phone with no lip in the way, which is a nice change IMO.
Screen
Absolutely amazing. Gorgeous, vibrant HD screen that impressed me more than my GSII did. I do see a small amount of the ink blotting that is all too common with Super AMOLED screens, however it is much more minor than it was on my first GSII and pretty much unnoticeable even watching movies in the dark. The colors literally pop on this bad boy, and the brightness is more than adequate for great viewing in direct sunlight. I've never seen a better screen on a phone, period. I know this is subjective, just my two cents.. couldn't be happier.
The User Experience
Processing Speed
Holy **** Batman. This is the fastest phone I've ever seen in my life, hands down. This thing came flying right out of the box as faster than any over clocked dual-core monstrosity I've ever seen. In addition to the awesome speed I experienced myself, the Quadrant scores were in the high 4800's to low 5100's without any modifications at all. No root, no freezing bloatware, nothing. Handles everything I throw at it without even a hiccup. All while running a Live Wallpaper at 60 fps. Scrollable widgets, scrolling live wallpaper, stuff running in the background, jumping from one app to the next using the home button, nothing slows it down. Nothing. Granted, I am using Apex Launcher instead of TouchWiz but that means TouchWiz is still in the background somewhere since I have not frozen or uninstalled it. Doesn't seem to matter, it runs beautifully. This is true on Wifi or 3G/4G, consistent performance regardless.
Radios
I'm getting the best reception and data speeds on T-Mobile I've ever experienced. In my area, where on a good day I might see 5-6Mbps down, I am routinely getting 11-12Mbs. In my condo where I typically have one to no bars, I have three. Wifi connects like nobody's business, by the time I entered my password it was connected within a second. Literally couldn't even finish reading "obtaining IP address" before it said "connected". And I read very fast. I did notice, however, that the wifi signal strength appears weaker - but did not have any disconnections or problems with it, it just "looked" like I had less signal than on my Gnex & GSII. Still stayed connected, and honestly I probably need a new router because mine is crap anyway.
So far, this is all I have to write about today, I've only had the phone for about 20 hours, I will edit this to conclude my review in the next day or two.
Initial impression - get this phone, you will NOT be sorry. Best phone on the market hands down IMO
back with more later, thanks!

Hi!
I had a chance to look at the pebble blue version of the Samsung Galaxy three phone in a T-Mobile store recently and noticed that when I used the google search engine to look up something, the white background surrounding the websites that loaded up on that page showed some blue tint. Has anyone seen this on their phone?
Also, I noticed that the pebble blue version that I saw in the store had alot of fingerprints. Does that bother anyone, who has this color? Thanks!

Well first, as mentioned before by others, the fluidity. The phone is so fast and smooth. I can't find anything to slow it down yet. Multitasking works flawlessly, which was a huge gripe with the One X. The design is much nicer in my opinion, but I did used to think the One X was nicer before I ever saw the S3. Call quality is much, much clearer on the S3 on both a speaker and regular call. The speaker is louder, which is nice when watching videos or listening to music. Also, I always found the One X to be slightly uncomfortable to hold, but the S3 I've had no complaints about, it's quite nice.
These are just my two cents, no fanboyism whatsoever.

Hard time buying one

Hi guys. New to the forums, and currently an iPhone user (and an Android n00b!). But JB and Galaxy Nexus was such a combo that I couldn't resist ordering a Galaxy Nexus (iPhone is good, but, I'm kinda bored of it, need change). Before ordering (what's for me) a really expensive phone, I did some research and came across THIS thread. I searched more on what's normal and what's not. Finally when I got my hands on my (GSM, unlocked) Galaxy Nexus, I looked for the common defects, and as you might guess, I found one (just one, to be precise, and there was no purple tint or image retention problems detected). There was a V-shaped black spot on the screen (not too big though) visible if the brightness is around 25% or less (based on the position of the slider). So, I claimed a replacement. But now I've found out that the black spots are too common and it's hard to get a phone without them. Why? I'm paying a LOT of money for this phone, and it is supposed to be flawless.
Question is, should I compromise on the replacement unit (if it has such a defect again)? Of course, not every defect can be compromised (like the purple tint issue). But what do you think? Is it virtually impossible to get a Galaxy Nexus that's completely flawless, even after replacements? It's an awesome phone, no doubt, but looking at the defects and considering how may people have got defected phones makes me go . It looks like no one has a flawless one, with no manufacturing faults. Am I right? Please vote and post so we can have an idea.
I'll keep you updated on my phone's status. Once again, this is an awesome community, I feel at home with Android even before getting an Android phone! :good:
Ordered mine from the play store. No issues for me.
If you go looking for defects on any device (yup, even apple devices), you WILL find one somewhere. get your replacement or whatever, open the box and turn it on, if it looks good to you then use it... if not, contact google. Life is too short to go looking for faults in everything.

But think, it is a rare chance that you take out an iPhone out of the box and manage to find a single defect in it. I know, I sound like a fanboy (I'm not!). Galaxy Nexus is so awesome, but why oh why is it so hard to find one which is (at least) 99% flawless?!
I think the majority of the people here don't have defects on their phones. It's just that those with defects tend to whine a little more about it.

The quality control could have been different. The iPhone uses a different screen type (NOT Super AMOLED). Our Nexus has a very good colorful screen that represents bright colors and good contrast while also maintaining very deep blacks that the iPhone screen can NOT do. I guess you can look at this as a trade-off. Samsung designs and manufactures this phone almost entirely (besides the TI OMAP chipset, but they do have their own) while Apple only designs their products and manufactures nothing. The new Super AMOLED's in the GSIII I have heard are much nicer quality/better designed than what we have.
Don't think about it. Just do it.

I ordered mine from the play store as soon as the price dropped to $350. I received a made in china/february 2012 model. My screen has two splotches in the middle, is somewhat grainy and has minor retention with no purple tint. I was devastated when i got it but to be honest, its not a big deal at all. It doesnt affect the awesome user experience of the gnex and jellybean. I could care less about those defects now as the phone works flawlessly. My advice, get the phone and stop worrying about it

I don't consider black spots to be a manufacturing flaw, it's there due to inconsistency in manufacturing AMOLED screens.

Every smartphone has its issues. The iPhone is no exception. http://blog.fixya.com/pr/july2012/fixya-smartphones-report.pdf
Thanks for all the replies. So in short, if the replacement unit has a defect (minor one, just like the last one that I returned), I should just get it, right?
I hope and pray that the replacement unit is 100% flawless, but let's see

Err.. the proportion of flaws is greatly exaggerated, especially once the device has been out for a while and the producers have had a chance to correct their technique. (Every device suffers from early-adoption issues, as you might've gathered.) There's a decent chance that your second one will be OK. If it's not, just RMA it again, don't worry so much (unless the injunction kicks back in!
Extremly bad reception on GSM Galaxy Nexus. Had motherboard replaced by Samsung, now it's fine.

screen burn in...

Hello guys, been fan of the google phones since nexus 5 and didn't have a chance to get one because there is no google store or any store with officially support to sell pixel phones. So i decided to get used one for 155 bucks... And i am disappointed, can't believe that guy that sold me this device didn't noticed screen burn in.. of course he will not accept refound, and on pictures from online store where i found this one it was impossible to notice that... My question is, is it worth to buy a new screen sice they are really expensive and it is difficult to replace it.. or use this phone just like it is till i decide to buy a new one... Any advice will be appreciated..
Beside this screen problem, i think pixel 2xl is great device, and man, i missed that stock android experience...it flies even it is almost 3 years old...
Edit: and screen burn in doesn't bother me so much, but this yellowish screen is really noticable... Screen image is like i have constantly night mode enabled...
And what can cause this defections of screen in this device...if it will come again with the new one it is definitely not worth to replace the screen..

Sorry for your bad luck, man.
I had bought a Pixel 2 XL back in February and recently dropped it, shattering the top of the screen. I thought about replacing the screen, but, since a screen replacement would cost just as much as another phone, I went ahead and found another one on eBay. The only complaint I have about the replacement I got is that it seems the battery has degraded more than the original one; 75% on the replacement and 95% on the original. I'm sure I'll have to replace the battery at some point.
The screen doesn't seem too difficult to replace though it does look like there are some sensitive spots you have to watch out for when disassembling.
If it's an option, I would bring it somewhere to get repaired, like Ubreakifix.

Thanks for your answer...
I see that price for pixel 2 screen is almost half a price of 2xl screen, so one more bad luck i think.. and in my country, repair shops are sh..t.. they don't repair phones that are not popular here, and google devices for sure are not..and if they do repair, they don't take responsibility if they damaging something else..
On eBay, as you said, price for the screen is almost a price of the another phone..
And didn't know that model from 2017 have this screen burn in problems... If i knew that, surely i would be more careful with buying... Bro i was really happy to get a Pixel device
So i think best option is to wait for some cheap pixel 2xl screen or device with broken motherboard and replace it myself... Have some experience, replaced screen on htc m8 (never again) and replaced battery on htc u11, it was pretty easy...
I have the same burn in like yours but i get used to it actually also to mention i use fullscreen gestures rather than navbar buttons, recently i found an app called display tester it has a mode called black & white bars i played it for lile 15 mins & it reduced the burn in effect for some time, give it a try
Burn in h putt to be more precise burn out) is normal.
I bothered Google so hard that they send me a me one and forgot to asked the plants one to be returned.
Anyway, I'm using the one and my father the other one, no problem.
I'm using gestures and pimped them with gestureplus (play store)
The display is always a bit yellowish and overall too dark.
My mother has an old Pixel (first gen), which was manufactured by htc, and that one has a brilliant Samsung display

Didn't helped but thanks for advice anyway... I ran those apps for few hours and nothing changed... I see screen replacement is not that hard, only thing remaining is to find cheap fully working display...till that i must use the phone just how it is

This is a problem with all the Pixel 2 XL and every other phone that has OLED screen. Some get it worse then others. And since Google used lower quality screens its more prominent on them.
But i had burn in on my Galaxy S3 my Nexus 6p and my Pixel 2 XL (2 of them)
I worked for ATT Wireless and Verizon Wireless for about 6 years and saw it on so many phones. from Samsung LG Google etc.

Could it be because of bad phone using... Because i had 10-15 devices, some was new some was used and never had this type of issue... And i use my phone a lot... But if i can expect this problem when i change the display it is better to buy another device...

This was an issue with the Pixel 2's from day 1.
Reporters and bloggers were tweeting they were having problems on launch day. It made google give out 2 year warranties on them in the beginning.
Google has always had an issue with screens all the way back to the Nexus 5. Esp when the phone is made by LG

Thanks for the info, best option is to use custom kernel to try fix this yellowish screen with kcal... Really can't believe that phone that costed so much at the launch had such a bad issue.. wish i knew that before buying...
Just got mine for 99 bucks on ebay...MINT condition with a small burn in. Happens to be the "G" oogle symbol in the middle of the screen, very faint but it fits at least. couldn't be happier really.

Yep I did, but didn't know the extent. Took a big chance. Totally worth 99 bucks. Most of them "refurbished" therefore not rootable, are going for about 200+ still.
Darkmode and you can't see the burn in; "light mode" barely can see it. It's a verizon variant and ready to roll. I use Google FI and it, out of the box...was seamless to use with that service. The outside, chassis? MINT. Mint I say. Not even a micro scratch to be seen. It's almost like, judging by what the burn it says...it was a display unit in a small shop that never got actually touched by a finger.
Now that I think about it, there is no evidence it's a verizon variant. When I turned it on no verizon anything...no preinstalled VZW app, nothing. I updated it to 10, updated all apps on wifi, never asked for any VZW account or anything. Downloaded the FI app...and boom...esim was up and activated. Maybe the ebay seller thought it was a VZW one? I know Google made it pretty much in an unbranded state on VZW? Confirm anyone? lol anyway LOVE IT, until the 4a eventually comes out, then I'll get that.
UPDATE: yep a VZW variant...in dev options "allow OEM unlock" is greyed out. No biggie, no need for root imho with stock pixel experience. ADB sideloaded "11 Preview 4" and went smooth. It's nice.
