T-Mobile Galaxy SIII Review - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

The Build Quality
Color
Let's start with one of the most prominent complains about the Pebble Blue version... the color of the dedicated home button. To quickly dispel the rumors - it is *not* a different color than the rest of the phone. It is the same exact color, however the reason many people claim it is different or "purple" is because it does not have the glass covering it, so it appears to be a different shade to the untrained eye (the glass adds a slight darkness over the Blue surrounding the face of the device). There is nothing about the color of the phone that is inconsistent. It has a nice, even Blue/Gray metal tone to it, with highlights of purple depending on the light hitting it. Personally I prefer black phones, however I have become accustomed to the Pebble Blue and I can say I definitely prefer it over a white phone. All in all, very happy with the color.
Back plate
I had seen a complaint from someone in the forum that the bottom of the back plate was not completely "flush" on one side. Although it is very minor, I can report a similar finding on mine as well. It doesn't seem to be a defect really, it's just not "perfect" to those of us with phone OCD (which is probably 85% of us on XDA). Overall the back fits well - not something I am worried about. Don't care much for the design coming from the GSII and the GSM Gnex, as I was used to the awesome texture and "inset" style of those back plates, however I do find that the material the GSIII is made of seems to stick to my hands somewhat making it less likely to drop pulling it out of my pocket. I have seen some users calling it "slippery" but I would have to respectfully disagree here. I find it adheres to my hand more than any phone I have ever owned, possibly due to the coating they used on it (that may be why they coated it the way they did). Most of us will probably throw a case on this phone anyway, so it may not even be relevant for most.
"Bezel"
The "bezel" around the glass appears to be made of a different material than the rest of the phone. It looks like it potentially could have problems down the line - almost appears as if it's made with minute cracks, although I believe that is just the look of the material. However, with recent reports of some cracking happening for no apparent reason (though I cannot confirm that the user(s) did not sit on the phone or something similar to cause it) this could potentially be the Achilles Heel of the GSIII. If we see a ton of issues with this, there will be some very unhappy GSIII owners and a slew of returns/replacements. Mine has not exhibited any problems so far, but this is something I will be watching closely. Again, a case is probably going to add some protection here, which is how I intend to stave off any potential problems. One thing that really makes this phone shine is the elimination of the bezel "lip" - your finger slides right over the glass from the side/bottom/top of the phone with no lip in the way, which is a nice change IMO.
Screen
Absolutely amazing. Gorgeous, vibrant HD screen that impressed me more than my GSII did. I do see a small amount of the ink blotting that is all too common with Super AMOLED screens, however it is much more minor than it was on my first GSII and pretty much unnoticeable even watching movies in the dark. The colors literally pop on this bad boy, and the brightness is more than adequate for great viewing in direct sunlight. I've never seen a better screen on a phone, period. I know this is subjective, just my two cents.. couldn't be happier.
The User Experience
Processing Speed
Holy **** Batman. This is the fastest phone I've ever seen in my life, hands down. This thing came flying right out of the box as faster than any over clocked dual-core monstrosity I've ever seen. In addition to the awesome speed I experienced myself, the Quadrant scores were in the high 4800's to low 5100's without any modifications at all. No root, no freezing bloatware, nothing. Handles everything I throw at it without even a hiccup. All while running a Live Wallpaper at 60 fps. Scrollable widgets, scrolling live wallpaper, stuff running in the background, jumping from one app to the next using the home button, nothing slows it down. Nothing. Granted, I am using Apex Launcher instead of TouchWiz but that means TouchWiz is still in the background somewhere since I have not frozen or uninstalled it. Doesn't seem to matter, it runs beautifully. This is true on Wifi or 3G/4G, consistent performance regardless.
Radios
I'm getting the best reception and data speeds on T-Mobile I've ever experienced. In my area, where on a good day I might see 5-6Mbps down, I am routinely getting 11-12Mbs. In my condo where I typically have one to no bars, I have three. Wifi connects like nobody's business, by the time I entered my password it was connected within a second. Literally couldn't even finish reading "obtaining IP address" before it said "connected". And I read very fast. I did notice, however, that the wifi signal strength appears weaker - but did not have any disconnections or problems with it, it just "looked" like I had less signal than on my Gnex & GSII. Still stayed connected, and honestly I probably need a new router because mine is crap anyway.
So far, this is all I have to write about today, I've only had the phone for about 20 hours, I will edit this to conclude my review in the next day or two.
Initial impression - get this phone, you will NOT be sorry. Best phone on the market hands down IMO
back with more later, thanks!

very nice review cant wait to get this phone on att!

Very cool I cannot wait for july 5th when I'm eligible for my full upgrade. My vibrant has been a great phone but this things seems like the real deal.

Awesome review! I switched from Verizon to t-mobile today. How do I make sure I am getting the 42mb.s. speeds? I am seeing speeds around 1-3mbs. It says 4g up top...

Finally got mine today and I can say that I'm impressed. I think the One X is going up for sale very soon.. . Sure the screen isn't as crisp, but everything else about the phone blows the One X out of the water.

Hi!
I had a chance to look at the pebble blue version of the Samsung Galaxy three phone in a T-Mobile store recently and noticed that when I used the google search engine to look up something, the white background surrounding the websites that loaded up on that page showed some blue tint. Has anyone seen this on their phone?
Also, I noticed that the pebble blue version that I saw in the store had alot of fingerprints. Does that bother anyone, who has this color? Thanks!

Well first, as mentioned before by others, the fluidity. The phone is so fast and smooth. I can't find anything to slow it down yet. Multitasking works flawlessly, which was a huge gripe with the One X. The design is much nicer in my opinion, but I did used to think the One X was nicer before I ever saw the S3. Call quality is much, much clearer on the S3 on both a speaker and regular call. The speaker is louder, which is nice when watching videos or listening to music. Also, I always found the One X to be slightly uncomfortable to hold, but the S3 I've had no complaints about, it's quite nice.
These are just my two cents, no fanboyism whatsoever.

Dust under the screen

Hey guys. I know I'm not the only one. I was examining the screen tonight with an external LED and I spotted two specs of dust in the mid-left of the screen, about 10mm apart. They're so large that the LED makes the specs cast a shadow on the screen itself. When the screen is on, they're hard to miss. I bought it from Negri Electronics, and I've read that they don't consider this a defect. So I don't know if I should contact Samsung or not... the specs are bearable, and thinking about swapping, who knows if I'll get another device that's worse than the one I currently own. Other than that? This phone is epic and there is no way to describe how awesome it is... that's my only thing with this that bugs me. My 4S didn't have dust. And for $764 I expected a tad bit better quality.
I'd appreciate any and all feedback. I'll upload some pics upon request.

I also have one spec. Can only notice it on white or very light colors. I'm just trying to forget about it because I don't want to deal with the hassle of swapping. Not worth it for one spec IMO
Yeah I agree. I can only see it when the screen is a light color or is white. It just sucks, but not worth the hassle. That's for sure. I wish there was something like apple where I could look at the replacement. But its cool.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I just tried to accept the fact that no device is perfect. That and it would really suck if I swapped it and got one with even more dust!
Maybe it'll disintegrate one day. Ha. Who knows. Whatever, its just dust.

I got a speck of dust also, what a premium quality.
This phone should cost $400 for the build quality.

Thanks pocketnow for the picture
It's hideous IMO....my 15 & 13 year old daughters would love it.
I don't see why they don't release these phones in multiple colors from the get go. Maybe blue, green, red, white, and black. Or something along those lines.
Thanks for the update. My wife was waiting for this in order to switch her white evo. She will be glad to hear the good news.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Is it just a white paint job or did they change some of the hardware? I actually don't mind different colors and white is the new black right? Anyways, I would rather have a white TPU case then this, but the wife's evo is due for an upgrade in a couple of months.
Looks pretty good, I still prefer black because of the low profile. Black hides dirt, white hides scratches

Right?! I seriously think they do it in hopes of people who already bought a black one will jus" t "fall in love" and outright just buy it.
It would be smarter and they would appeal to people who, for example, "need a white device" if they would release all colors on the same day. But, since theyre greedy and only care about money, people who were considering this phone but found out it was only in black bought another phone to their liking - does Samsung really think people will ditch their phone and jump on this one? Nope. Too late. They already used theyre upgrade, and if anything, now they dislike Samsung for doing this type of thing to them.
In other words, greed is the worst thing in this world.
end_rant();
I think it looks slick..i really like it. I'm wondering though, the battery cover looks glossy now...need some texture, IMO, otherwise it'll be too slippery lol.
And before anyone says it...yes, that is what she said.

Nice to finally see the Sprint pics for it. That January 8th date is looking more likely all the time per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373771&highlight=white
Hopefully a nice stable fully functional build of CM7 will be done around the time this hits retail shelves.

Actually white hides both better. when I had my E4GT in black and a case, I was constantly taking the phone out of the case to clean the edges where the phone meets the case. With my white skyrocket, I don't find myself doing that at all. I'm a real neat freak when it comes to phones, too.
Also, if the phone is anything like the skyrocket, you guys need to see the phone in person to appreciate the way it looks / color. I didnt like the white skyrocket, but when I had it in my hand and looked at it, it looked awesome.
I've had more then a couple people comment on how nice the phone is, and for someone to go out of their way and say that about a phone is pretty rare.
Just my .02.
EDIT: Also, I can't tell if this one has it, but my phone has a chrome rim which looks really nice. and the keys light up wayyyyy brighter then the black version and bleed through the white, which makes it look stellar at night. It;s also not white, it's a sort of pearl white. Again, you should probably look at it in person before you pass judgment.
I would have to see it in person. I gave my black Evo to the wifey when the white one came out but I doubt I do the same with the ET4G.
Only other color this phone would look good in is a Silver or metallic or better yet that charcoal Grey that's on BMW's
I would trade my black one in a heart beat! That's a slick looking phone!
Looks real clean. Is January 8th the confirmed date? I think I'll use my premiere upgrade close to the end of the month and if it releases on time I can trade it for the white

Defects to watch out for

Mail ordered my nexus and wanted to know what defects to look out for that would warrant a return for another. (also, anyone know if replacements are refurbs? I refuse to shell out $300 for a refurb!)
My Watchlist so far:
Display tinting red, green, or blue in sections
Overwashed "linen yellow" whites
Speaker issues
Battery "awake time" bug
These seem to be specific to a "bad" device and would like to know other issues that mean I got a bum unit that should be returned...

Some of those issues are user tolerance too.

I can say from personal experience that I've experienced all of those except for the battery bug. I've been through three phones so far, and all of them had different issues. My first phone had really bad screen banding, which is inherent to SAMOLED screens, but some are worse than others...and mine was the worst of all the phones I compared it to. The store agreed to replace it, but the next one I got had severe static over just the earpiece speaker. The store once again agreed to swap it out, and now the one I have has a ridiculous amount of red throughout the screen. At lower screen brightness (50% or less) anything that is supposed to be grey is completely purple (menus, widgets, etc). I've been told by a Verizon rep that this is something that will be fixed by a software update in the future, and is a known issue...but I think he was making it up to get me out of the store (please note that this was a different store than I had been dealing with from the start). The phone is completely awesome...as long as it's not broken!
Must have lucked out... Got mine at Best Buy on the 15th and have had NONE of the issues... Whites are white... no blue tint... After a few charges the battery has been fine... Right now my Nexus has been on for about 5 hours with light use and I'm at 88%. If i had the awake time bug it would be much lower...
Like i said, i lucked out. So for anyone with these bugs, replace it. These bugs are NOT on all units.

I am happy with my whites, but they are far from white. When I first was checking out my nexus, I thought to myself, wow the whites look really good. Then, I compare my Nexus S with SLCD, Nexus S with AMOLED, and my GN. The Nexus S with the SLCD, whites are insane, almost pure white.
My first one had issues where the touch screen was totally unresponsive after coming out of sleep. Swapped it at the store the next day, and this new one has absolutely no issues. Connectivity is great, colors are great, battery is great (Extenged battery, been off charger for 4 hours, sufed a bit, a couple of texts, and quite a few phone calls, and I'm still above 80% for battery)... I love the phone.
The guy next to me in the office though -- He's on his second one, and is getting dropped calls, dropped connections, and it's overheating to the point of making his face uncomfortable on the phone... he's going back tonight for another one. his first one wouldn't connect to 3g or 4g, and they couldn't fix it in the store.
Just use the phone like normal. If you have to seek out a "defect", then it isn't a defect. Just use the phone and enjoy it.
are these issues for only the verizon version or the GSM as well because I am debating on shipping a GSM one but I'm iffy about it because I dont want to get a defective one and wont be able to replace it or have to wait another week to get a new one.

I have also noticed on my current device that if I put up an all black image, I have spots around the screen where there is darker black, almost like the glue on the screen or something.
Here is a new one, when the phone us vibrating something sound a like it is loose inside the phone ..not many reports of this one tho only seen 2 so far not including mine

Got my replacement GNex from Asurion...

Follow up to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647908
I got my replacement about 12 hours ago, and I noticed a couple of things that I thought I'd share. Firstly, it was brand-new, still sealed in the box, so yay for getting an extra battery and cable. Anyhoo...
1. The display is better... it isn't as grainy at low brightness and nothing has a purple hue.
2. It's LOUD. I'm very certain that the speaker is a lot louder than the other one. I didn't have a chance to compare them side-by-side since I sent the other one off already, but I found that noteworthy for sure. I wonder if there's something different about this one hardware-wise or something... but I thought it was a software thing?
Oh, and I picked up an Otterbox Commuter, too... $35 is a lot cheaper than another $100... haha

I know this is kind of OT but...
What is this grainy/purple hue everyone keeps talking about? When I first got my Sprint Gnex I noticed on low brightness there was a blue hue with color banding, but after almost a month it's pretty much disappeared. Both my Nexus S (9020t and D720) were the same way, and now after 1-1.5 years they look the exact same just dimmer or brighter. Is it just me or have I gotten EXTREMELY lucky with all 5 of my Nexus line phones?
And by the way, if anyone is unhappy with a phone you get from Asurion, give them a call and be polite but agitated, and ask for a different one. 9/10 times they'll give you a brand new phone still sealed in box. <-Just for future reference.

Screen issues with TMOUS GS3? Ink blots

Anyone notice issues with their GS3 screen under dark light conditions?
Was thinking to myself, "Man, the GS3 is a 1000x better looking than that POS GS2!"
Come to find out...while not bugged with vertical lines or blobs, there are ink dots! I found a black background and viewed it in the gallery. After about 10 seconds of focusing on the screen, my eyes adjusted to the dark and I saw the ink blots!!!
There are definitely a few of them. Anyone notice this issue? I have to test my dad's phone to see if he has any. I just got mine last friday.
Byproduct of the screen technology.

Yeah, I have noticed the same thing also. It hasn't bothered me, and I have only noticed it in a very few specific instances, so I am not worried about it. Guess it is normal.

So it's normal? I was honestly disappointed to see them on my brand new galaxy s3. Wasn't upset for seeing them on the s2 as that's forever old.
What exactly causes it? If you know.

It's like dead pixels when the screen is completely black, right? And you only notice it in pitch darkness because the screen's black isn't quite as black as the dead pixels? Yup! I noticed it, too. I was trying to watch an LoL (or SC2 --I forgot which) and while the stream was loading I saw two noticeable black spots. It's completely normal. They're not your typical "dead pixels". I know I called it that above, but that's because I don't know what else to call it. If you run dead pixel test, it passes because the black on black isn't noticeable unless it's completely pitch dark... if that makes sense. In any case, don't try massaging it. You might mess up your screen in a worse way.

Yes, unfortunately it is normal. It has something to do with the OLED technology but I'm not 100% on what causes it. The N7000 had it pretty bad. Google "black crush" or "black clipping" that might help explain it.

Return for a other s3. I returned two. Flaws like this are a defect and not to be considered normal. It is a byproduct of bad quality control and Chinese manufacturing. Samsung has been dropping the ball in the qc area since the s2. Screen issue are rampant now on several of Sammy's product lines. You would think the flagship would be flawless but I am now on my third s3 in as many weeks. Glad I have the php bundle.

This is the result of the OLED screen tech, it is widely present on every phone that uses OLED, and that's how it is.

It is normal. Whoever says that changed and got new phone is just trolling. Every screen got that issue.
I was about to return it but I checked my dad's S3 and my brother's white s3...same issues (random small spots).
Luckily, it isn't as pronounced as the S2 issue was (I sold that phone because of it) but it is still disappointing to see that the issue is still here!

I understand that is very common among some issues but some screens are in far worse condition as my second unit was. It not just tmobile but all us s3 have screen defects. As an EE and IT specialist in will say it is a flaw in the manufacturing process. The s2 was similar. There are screens with no defects. It takes time to find one. I am stating facts and have no need to troll or lie. The are several of these with screen defects.
The vibrant is OLED and it saw no issues. Blacks were true black. No splotches or lines on the original line but the s 2 and 3 do have screen defects.

So you are saying it is not plausible for cuts in manufacturing cost and moving more production to China as apposed to Korea could not have a negative impact on screen quality.
If you buy a new car and a week goes by an the paint bubbles or the windows chip when rolled up. If they say it's normal with that model paint and glass would you buy it,? Not I.

Not mine. It has made in China all up on it. Even on my box. The s2 was made in both countries so it's not hard to imagine the s3 is the same. I had a china made s2 with a crazy screen. Warrant exchange and got a Korean made one and perfect screen. Not a single flaw. I went through 3 s3s and all made in China so it is not the case. QA and QC is still to blame for flaws.

Correct. Just look at the Phone box and stated "Made In China/Printed". Everything is made in China now-n-days..so it wouldn't be a surprised :good:

Sir or Mam, this is normal with Oleds. Some appears worst than others because the calibration of each screen are slightly different from the next. But pretty much 98% of all the oled screens hadc these blotches. Even if you luck up and get one which you think none is there, if you look closely you will find a blotch or 2 in the screens.

When I previously owned the SGS2, that phone was manufactured in China. After discovering the blot situation I decided to exchange for a better 1. After a couple of exchanges, they finally sent me 1 made in Korea. That 1 was the best looking display out of all the other SGS2 that I previously own, which were made in China.
