1080p video playback - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just tried watching a vid my brother-in-law sent that he took on his Canon 5D Mark II in full 1080p.... the screen gets wacked out fuzzy and I can't the see the video for the entire duration. Anyone have any ideas?

Everyone raves about dice player and mx player, try one of those in hardware or software mode.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App

This particular video played with the MX Video Player in s/w decoder... thanks so much. What a relief. So Galaxy Nexus doesn't support MP4 1080p.

It does. Play the video through the gallery instead of the Video app.

Are you trying to watch scrambled porn again?
Crazy world, ay?

What's with all the pervy jokes here? Woah. Here's what I'm watching...
When it's working through MX Vid Player with s/w decoding

Just because the SGN is capable of playing 1080p h.264 videos it doesn't mean its going to play anything you throw at it.
The Canon 5D Mark II produces h.264 base profile encoded video at a 38Mbit/s rate in an .mp4 container.
That's a VERY VERY high bitrate. For reference, a typical bluray is anywhere between 15-25Mbit.
Think about it this way. For this file, encoded at 38Mb/s Your device is trying to decode 4.5 MegaBYTES of video (so we aren't even talking about sound processing at this point) every second. So a 30 minute video runs you at something like 7 GB.
The average bluray at 25 Mbit/s will be 3MB/s and 5GB at 30 minutes.
No mobile hardware chip is going to be good at decoding 38Mbps video. Its somewhat of a miracle that you can even decode this in software mode but I'm sure you can chalk that up to the SGNs fantastic dual core processor.
TLDR; You need to recompress the video at a much lower bitrate. You can keep it 1080p but encode it at something like 10-15Mbps.
I am trying to look up the SGN's rated spec in Mbps for video playback but I can't find it atm.

See? This is why I love XDA... that was an education and an answer and gave me hope that this phone is more awesome than I thought. Heh

Based on Shish' post I would assume the video is made at the lower variable bitrate as is found on BR players and whatnot. I understand from what he's saying that cameras like the 5D are filming at a faster rate than the available equipment is capable of playing satisfactorily.

Anandtech tested the Transformer prime at 40mbits/s ....just sayin

Then size does matter.

Apparently the OMAP 4460 uses the IVA-HD Multimedia accelerator for handling video decoding.
And according to the OMAP 4460 spec sheet it can play these codecs hardware accelerated:
• H.264: BP/MP/HP Encode and Decode
• H.264: Fast Profile/RCDO Encode and Decode
• MPEG-4: SP/ASP Encode/Decode (No support for GMC)
• DivX 5.x and higher Encode/Decode (No lower version; for example, 3.11 and 4.x)
• H.263: Profile 0 and 3 for Decode, Profile 0 for Encode
• Sorenson Spark: V0 and V1 Decode (No encode support)
• MPEG-2 SP/MP Encode/Decode
• MPEG-1 Encode/Decode
• VC-1/WMV9/RTV : SP/MP/AP Encode and Decode
• On2® VP6/VP7 Decode
• RealVideo® 8/9/10 Decode
• AVS 1.0 Encode and Decode
• JPEG (also MJPEG) Baseline Encode/Decode
• H.264 Annex G (SVC) Scalable Baseline Profile to 480p – 720p30
• H.264 Annex H (MVC) up to 720p30
Doesn't say anything about the bitrate though.

The transformer prime is a beast though. It has a Tegra 3 processor which is Nvidia's Quad core CPU with a TWELVE core GPU. That 12-core GPU combined with the 4-core CPU has a LOT more processing power than the 2-core CPU and single core GPU of our Gnexes.

I'm aware of the specs on the prime. I was just responding to your comment that 40mbits was beyond mobile performance possibilities.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App

Well that's being a bit pedantic for my tastes lol. You and I both know laptops are mobile and can play upwards of 40mbps. The transformer prime is faster than most net books and even some laptops.
Anyway then yea you are right
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App

1. Are you sure video is deinterlaced? If its 1080i, the (C|G)PU has to convert it on the fly in the media player gallery. 40Mbit/sec is very tough to do that with.
2. The Transformer while on paper looks better, the Gnex has better synthetic benchmarks than the T'former. Loook at the Engadget and Anandtech reviews. In LinPack, the Tformer gets about 60'ish, where as the Gnex can hit 90. Just sayin'.
3. Dice Player plays better than anything else I've thrown at it. Too bad the full version isn't available, so I have to uninstall/re-install the trial every 3 days because the guy's google checkout account is locked and he refuses it to see it anywhere else like Amazon's app store. Oh well.

you will be able to edit the videos professionally.
and when u have 720p u will save some more money for next phone + u will enjoy HD records.
for God sack this similar to BDRIP U got it?
TOTALLY AGREE!!
these are a recording dimension option on defy cm7 rom:
VGA recording, 640x480
Full Screen recording, 854x480
HD720p recording, 1280×720 [not yet, and the hard one]
could we get middle-res of widescreen recording like 640x360? (on youtube it called 360p res).
it is smaller, and lightweight than vga recording.
but it's widescreen (many people love widescreen right? )
maybe choppines will reduce on that smaller resolution.
and by the way 360p (640x360) is not that small
this is actual 100% (no zooming) of 360p res if you see on your computer

defy is not good for that hd recording things.

it's so different in terms of quality, but it's same in terms of width and height resolution (1280x720).

Test both out and see the difference!

Not to troll, but why would you want a 1080p source on a 720p screen?
I would want a 720p stream
the current one is just okay resolution wise, and has the buttons active instead of going full screen...
I don't understand why there are so many versions of the app... And why us international customers need to download the app from random links in forums. Instead of blocking in market they should (if they have to) block only in app, and people wouldn't risk malicious apps that steal login details. This only creates trouble for themselves.
Offtopic kind of, but since market enabler isn't working anymore (right?) how do people get apps from other regions without relying on someone to upload to the forum? Is there a trick?

Mine won't even start up. Screen goes black for a split second, then goes away.
Perhaps it has something to do with the Verizon service.
If someone could take it apart, I'm sure they'd remove the Razr specific resolution and Verizon requirements. Thus make it work for all phones on all networks.
Perhaps post this in the General "Android Development" thread with a request to look at it.

Just like was mentioned, you get better quality when running a 1080p stream and running it on 720 then you do from 480 to 720. I don't know if it bothers everyone but the graininess killed my Netflix experience on the nexus. I'm happy its working for me. But is anyone on a GSM running revolutionary rom? I'm also on 4.0.2

I don't think Netflix does 1080p streams... HD by definition is 720p. So perhaps it is just displaying the movie in it's native form.
Although really, having a HD 4" screen with 300+ DPI, I'm surprised if the 480p movie doesn't look steller.
Posted up and new file. I believe the File got corrupted on the upload. Ive triple checked the MD5 this time. Try it out and let me know!!!

I can't see any Video chat allowing 720p. For a conference, thats 2 HD video streams (in and out). Your not going to be getting the bandwidth required for that kind of streaming
That would require each member to have TWICE that to send and receive. Plus how networking works, you'd bounce between so many servers that there is no way to guarantee that kind of bandwidth.
Streaming video is much different then streaming live service. Quality of Service is very important here to make sure Video and Audio sync up on the fly. It can't "buffer" minutes ahead (time travel?).
This is why most Video Conference are limited to 320x240 or (at most) 640x480. [email protected] is considered pretty good.
The higher the resolution the choppier it will be. And if your looking for a HD slideshow, then video conferencing isn't the best option. Trust me, when your away from your family for a few weeks, you'll take any resolution.
720p capability of the Front Camera is mostly related to taking stills and local recording.

Videos not recorded in full sensor's frame?

Hi , i just checked out the One X today and i found out that when we go to video recording mode, the frame of the video is cropped to a very narrow angle, it's not as wide as when u're taking photos.
Is there anyway to disable this or increase the view angle when recoring video?
This thing happened with older phones like the DHD or Iphone4. While the Sensation/XE/XL recorded videos are as wide as taking images. And the One X is like top of the line phone, this is kind of disappointing.
Sorry for my bad eanglish
The One X's 8 MP pictures are 3264x1840 (4:3) whilst video is 1080p thus 1920x1080 (16:9)
Out the top of my head, there's no way of changing that.
No i'm not talking about "resolution". This has nothing to do with resolution, i think it happened because of the "capture while recording" feature. For example the videos recorded from the Sensation XE is exactly like the photo captured from that phone (with 16:9 crop)
While the One X's photos captured are like from a 16mm angle lens. The videos recorded is cropped to something like 50mm. That's what i mean
If u have any of the XE/XL or just the normal Sensation, try it yourself and u'll see. They have no difference switching between photo/video mode.
Photo captured from the XL(16:9):

A frame of video recorded from the XL(16:9 - 720p):
And this is what i mean by cropped frame when recording videos(for demonstration purpose only, notice the much narrower field of view):
I am gonna be very disappointed if my One X comes next week with no option to capture the video with the full sensor.
Just tried it and I think I now know what you mean...
Look at the left side of the tape measure... it's definitely noticeable :s
This is a screenshot (Powerbutton + Homescreen button)

thanks for the quick test, the cropping is not as bad as i imagined but still , i hope they give us option to capture it at full size
"One nice feature of the One series is that, thanks to the ImageSense chip, the camera can take full 8MP stills while recording video with no detriment to the video itself."

Mine was the same, the video size seemed cropped compared to the photos so I just went into settings and found that the video resolution was set to 1280 x 720 and I've now changed it to 1920 x 1080.

Edit (12th June): I've just taken my first videos with the HTC One X and noticed that most of the video crop is being caused by the reservation of pixels for image stabilisation. Disabling stabilisation will give you a much larger field of view.
Cheers,

Just to avoid any confusion - the HTC Sensation doesn't capture video at the same width as still photos. It also has the same limitation with 1080p video.

Hi. that's weird coz if i remember correctly , it recorded video look exactly like the photos, along with the XL. One of the reason i'm so proud of those 2
Can someone please confirm is the zooming available while recording in FULL HD (1980X1080P) mode?
woahhh
I really hope HTC release an update to improve video quality (after bug fixes, their more important), I mean seriously 23fps on average??? its a quad core, it should hand over 30 easy! What you reckon the chances of HTC improving it are people????

Oh yes, I was hoping quad core devices would be able to record 1080p at 60fps cuz dual core ones can do it at 30fps
I think alot of these "downgrades" are because of the "shoot while recording" feature. If they have an option for us to turn it off and take advantages of the full sensor and better fps with great bit rate that would be awesome
I heard camera ICS) (or ICS camera+ idk the name of the app) was able to fix the bit rate problem and improved the quality a lot! The only thing that bugs me is that whenever white balance is set to "auto" the colors keep getting purpleish/pinkish...
in this video you can see the better bit rate and the purpleish thing I told you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km_UMzl8iPA
I'm 99% sure it's doing what the Galaxy S II does, because the 1080p image doesn't scale evenly to the 8mp full size without leftover pixels and trying to use the full-frame is too processor intensive *cough*. It is also super shaky in all the videos, which is a symptom of having a really small capture area and not utilizing the full frame. The S II uses the full width when recording at 720p and does pixel binning at that resolution, helping it reduce noise. I'd imagine the One X does something similar in 720p, so if you want the full frame, you have to pick a lower resolution like 720p.
Ack. I've seen almost a 100 One X videos already and the video capture is still awful.

I'm afraid not. The Sensation also saves native 1920x1080 footage from a portion of the sensor. It's not a huge deal, but its visible.

T-Mobile Note 3 doesn't have 4k video recording?

Shows only 1080p Video Recording and not 4K.
What do yall think mistake or real?

im sure it will.. after all it will have the S800.. they need to update that info.. plus no one really has 4K tvs or the note 3 has 4k screen lol
I was worried for a second lol. But yeah, the Tmobile website has the same descriptions re-used for most of their phones. Since no other phone does 4k video-recording right now, the lazy guy who made the page just checked the box for "1080p HD Camcorder - Capture all your best experiences in high definition video" and called it a day.

To play a 4k content it is not mandatory to have a 4k UHD tv. My 2 year old dell n5110 can play the Elysium 4k trailer smoothly.
It is not mandatory either to have a 4k display phone to record or view 4k content. If the gpu (/ +cpu) is optimized to play a 4k content why should I bother watching it on N3. The S3 has 720p screen, does it refrain the S3 from shooting or playing 1080p content?
Hell no.

You sir have completely lost your mind. 4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160. The Samsung Galaxy note 3 has a resolution of 1920×1080. The note 3 will probably have somewhere of around 2 million pixels as a standard 1080p tv does. The 4k tv's have over 8 million pixels. While the note 3 will be able to shoot 4k resolution (3840 pixels × 2160) of the camera, the max resolution of the screen (1920×1080) can't display a higher resolution than what it's given. If the camera even on your phone shoots 1080p and the resolution on the screen is 720p then no the screen can't display the full 1080p resolution of the video. The cpu and gpu can support the shooting and playing of the video, but the screen resolution limits it and you are not watching it in 4k. If that was the case then there would be no 720p screens, 1080p screens, or 4k screens. Your right on the part of not a lot of people have 4k tv's. Most people I even mention it to don't know what 4k is.
^ what he said.
You need a 4k display to view content in 4k. It's like hooking up a blu ray player to an old CRT TV - yeah, it will work, but you won't be seeing the content in 1080p HD. I guess it's cool that they are future proofing the Note by making it capable of shooting 4k video, but realistically, it will be useless for most people.
It's my understanding from talking to.a Samsung rep that it does not record in 4k but rather upconverts the video for 4k playback
I could.have misunderstood this.but 100% he specifically used the word upconvert.
Just confirmed it does 4k.
Likewise, I picked up the GN3 yesterday and it does have 4k video for Tmobile
