battery drain: wi-fi v. LTE hmmmmmmmm - LG Nitro HD

when I am here at work, I usually tap the wi-fi for streaming my music, consequently, wi-fi has always been at the top for battery use

I noticed on this graph that the LTE radio never shows up on it though.
Today, I turned off the wi-fi and using only LTE for the last 3+ hours streaming tunes
WTF!!1one

i can assure everyone there is no debate.
If you run (from a root prompt):
# adb logcat
then look carefully, you will see that even with Wifi active, the phone is accessing the LTE network for updates and transmitting data to the network, therefore using 2x the battery usage. the best way to use only Wifi is to use Airplane mode then turn on your Wifi ONLY. this assures you of a near 100% Wifi only usage.
Only then can you produce accurate results for battery usage regarding LTE vs Wifi

there must be some confusion, allow me to restate my original post.
I am curious why the LTE radio's battery usage does not show up on the graphs I posted while the wi-fi does.

7.5 hours on battery, 6 of those hours streaming music via LTE, + a bit of browserin- battery @ 38%

Probably because it would be so huge, all others graphs would be a pixel wide....

because the 4G LTE radio usage is not tracked by an app, it is a system service. wifi is tracked because it has a separate app that controls the Wifi radio. the only way to shut off the cellular modem is by using airplane mode. make sense??

lolz. it doesn't seem to be as bad as it's made out to be by reviews.

yes, I am familiar with airplane mode, thank you, it does make sense.
Interesting that LTE is not considered a system service/left out while such things as android OS, cell standby and phone idle are displayed in the graph.

@[email protected]: dude, you have a clarity of thought none of us have.

I swear, we really need to somehow disable LTE on this phone and just run on either HSPA+ or 3G when we don't need LTE. I've always know that while it's not being used, it's still searching and updating constantly, and actually using up much more battery in the process.

i will see what i can come up with for disabling LTE.
EDIT: Found a way, but i will NOT accept credit for this method. the author is unknown, but whoever you are, thanks a bunch!!
1. Tap the Phone app.
2. Dial *#*#4636#*#*
3. The hidden test menus will appear. Select the Phone information menu.
4. Scroll down to the Set preferred network type menu and set it to CDMA auto (PRL).
5. Tap the Home button and you’re done.
The setting will go into effect immediately and the phone will stop searching for an LTE signal.
If you find one day that your town has LTE service or if you travel to a major city that does, you can perform steps 1 to 3 again and set the setting back to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto.

Did you test this? Because it DOESN'T work for me on my Nitro. It brings me to the test menus and I can choose Phone Information...But there's no option to choose network type.
EDIT: Just tried again and this time I pressed the menu softkey and it brought up a sub-menu and there's a choice for 'Select radio band'. But every time I click it I get a Force Close. :-(

Same force close when I attempt to pick radio band menu item.

I like my LTE so it'll stay but I was just this morning messing around trying to find out the sequence to open that hidden menu, thanks for that!

If you're using Launcher Pro, or any app that allows you to create a shortcut to system activities, you can create a shortcut to the Test menu:
With Launcher Pro:
1. At the Home screen, press the menu softkey, select Add
2. Choose Shortcuts > Activities > Settings > Testing (com.android.settings.TestingSettings)

drat, this is a no-go with go launcher.

If you're really interested in the shortcut there's a FREE app that can also do it called Any Cut:

2g,3g widget/switch??

Anyone know of any widget that will quickly switch between 2g and 3g networks?
Most of the time I leave it on 2g to save battery but when i need to use the internet to browse or search I have to go into the settings and switch it to 3g to surf the net then when i've finished switch back to 2g to save the battery again.
would be much more simple if there was a widget like the bluetooth, gps, wifi one that could quickly and easily be toggled.
There's a few on the marketplace - take a look at this one:
http://curvefish.com/widgets/2g3g-onoff.htm
There is one widget in the market called 2g/3g, you can find it by just searching for '2g' or '3g'. This widget sends you to the correct settings page, but you still have to change the band yourself.
This is the way it has to work in Android. I guess the api does not allow access to the setting directly from applications .
thanks just tried it.
Didn't work exactly how I wanted. opening the widget takes you to the network menu in settings and from there you still need to change it to 2g or 3g.....still quicker than my old way.
thanks
Yes, like I said there is no other way at the moment. Hope to see it in the future, loved that toggle on my HTC Touch HD.
what u can do is put widgets from settings on your home screen which allow you do easily switch from 2g to 3g, switch wi-fi and bluetooth on/off. See my screen below.

I think that the mobile switch you've shown turns off mobile internet, so rather than 2g or 3g it switches internet on or off.
there is no other option in the settings for Desire.

edge in an incement within 2G, 2.5. Going back to the first post, what babyshaq wants, as i understand is just use GSM singal. This is what the widget does. Edge does not add anything to your calls.
No, as stated before:
- He wants to switch from 3G to 2G through a widget (not possible)
- The widget you are suggesting turns off the mobile network
no it doesnt. it turns off 3g. trust me
Ok man whatever you want. When I flip that switch my mobile network connection is disabled, if I'm on the 3G or 2G band.
If you want to make things up, fine with me, enjoy yourself.
Sorry jaykayslo, you are simply wrong.
That widget turns of mobile data. It has nothing to do with switching between 2G and 3G whatsoever.
turn that widget off and go to the mobile network settings.
you'll see that the connect to the internet box has been unticked.
turn the widget on, and the box is ticked.
babyshaq, that widget on the market that takes you to the settings page is as close as you can get. It's not ideal, i grant you, but it's the best you can do.
Oh, and btw, GSM, GPRS and EDGE are ALL considered 2G technologies!
no biggie. i use it switch mobile data to save battery. Plain GSM is enought for calls. Don`t see the point in switching to gprs or edge, because data transfer is so small its not worth it.
Yea thanks guys. I understand its either a shortcut to the settings or completely turn it off.
I guess we'll have to wait it out and hopefully it will be developed in the future
You wrong, it turn off the mobile internet connection ... completely.

Yes, EDGE is too slow for web browsing.

yes we have established that. Semantically there is nothing wrong with my statement. It turns of 3G doesn`t it? But it doesn`t switch to 2G, which is what was sought after.

Why does this phone behave like this? I remember using other phones and they have no problem saving your selection (WCDMA preferred).

No, they are completely different which you will see by reading up on the topic or going into the testing menu. Samsung didn't write the Android radio standards. AUTO PRL uses predefined/downloaded lists to determine which signal is better, 2G or 3G. WCDMA Preferred fights to keep you on 3G which is helpful when you are in a borderline area and trying to use data.

IF that was true our phones would spend 100% of their time on 2G because the GSM network is /always/ stronger than the 4G network. That's baloney.
I said Samsung has their own network management software. It breaks the Network Information menu drop down

No. "WCDMA preferred" will pick up 3G/4G network as long as 3G/4G network signal is above a certain threshold. And the 3G signal threshold that "WCDMA preferred" can live with is lower than "GSM auto" can live with. Meaning, if the 3G signal is lower than certain amount, if you are on "GSM auto" it will automatically switch to 2G, but if you are on "WCDMA preferred" it will struggle to stay on 3G forcefully.

That's complete bull****. I've sat and watched my phone sit on a no bar 4G signal plenty of times and it does so every time I leave my house until it fades out completely and picks up 2G/EDGE again. I've also had HTC phones, whenever I changed it from WCDMA Preferred there was no change in handover. It behaved exactly the same. It stayed on 4G until the signal was too weak and switched over to 2G/GSM/EDGE

Autobrightness that only polls the sensor and adjust at power on, no dynamic adjustment, based on this:
http://androidforums.com/tasker/615585-profile-light-sensor-v2-brightness-adjust-screen.html
I also manage wifi per app, have a night reading mode triggered when I launch particular readers at a certain time of night, I'm planning some notification area toggles and I think I'm going to adopt your per app autorotation management too. That's a good idea.
I have an all text homescreen, and while Minimalist Widgets isn't my speed anymore, I've found a lightweight tasker fueled alternative called text widget: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tampiss.tText&hl=en
So far I just use it for the date, day of the week and ram free, but it can display any tasker variable you want on a home screen, so if you have built any complex applications like todo lists found at pocketables (See my sig), you can display content from there, or from files or webscrapping or anything you've stored in a variable.
If you want Month names, see: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/taskerpro/zxsyJN3X3is/gxkxXEa4eLIJ
If you want properly matched ordinals, I went with some conditionals (i.e. set %Ordinal to st if %DAYM = 1,21,31, or to nd if 2,22, or rd if 3,23, if none of those then th). Not super efficient, but not that hard either.
I might add weather next.
I use tasked to manage plenty stuff on my phone
One of my favorite profiles is my school profile
When I activate 2g and its Monday through Friday from 8 to 3
All volumes go silent and the phone goes on vibrate mode
Also the pattern lock gets enabled and network related stuff gets disabled (auto sync, location services , etc)
After 3 it runs the exit task which enables 3g and triggers my normal profile
---------- Post added at 12:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 AM ----------
I also have a night mode profile which after I enable airplane mode it triggers it and simply disables all other network related stuff that doesn't disable with airplane mode
It also enables pattern lock to prevent nosey people from looking in to my phone at night
And when they fail to access my phone five times the lock screen widgets get disabled and the phone shuts off

Hi
I don't think it's hard. Just make an If-condition, but two times!
If LAN n°1
Then go to step XX
End If
If LAN n°2
Then go to step XX'
End If
I think I'm gonna loooove this thread as I loooove this app ^^
My favorites profiles :
- Eco mode
If my battery is under 15% then the phone vibrate and asks me if I want to turn into the Eco mode through a notifications with button (yes or no) if I choose yes, than it disables the 3G, gps, auto rotate, put the light to the minimum, and turn some apps I've chosen to hibernate through the App Greenify (if you don't know, you better try it!!)
- 3G on
If 3G is on and I lock the phone, a 1 minute countdown starts and if I do not wake my phone it disables the 3G, if I do it, the countdown stops
I'll share more later

Absolutely just create one new variable (ex : %LAN) and then two different profile. The first will assign 01 to %LAN while you're connected to 01 then the second will assign 02 to %LAN while you're connected to 02
Finally just use the task you want as I described it in my last post with

I have done the same but more on emulating Catalyst Rom feature.
1. I delay the switch to 2G if there is still high data traffic (repeatly check every 15s, only switch to 2G if less than 15KB transfer, all these can be set as i like)
2. On screen on & unlock if still on 3G (2G not switch due to active data traffic), kill task no.1
3. On screen on & unlock change to 3G if currently on 2G network
4.Change to 2G when connected to Wifi
5. Switch between 3G/2G if signal loss for more than 15s (This is kinda important to me as some buildings in my country have no 2G signal underground, so my phone will be dead until i open it)
Attach my project file for references. Remember to initiate vars value for Log (0 for profile activation logging, 1 mean have) and State2G (0 mean on 3G, 1 mean on 2G).
Also put the "tasker log" file at root of internel SD card.
Also due to data traffic calculation method, this file only applicable for 4.3 base ROM. For 4.2 ROM the file to read is at different location.
Another long time Tasked user here. Keep them coming guys!
Did anyone tried to automatically enable GPS when launching Maps or Navigation? I didn't manage to make it work even if I'm rooted. The profile triggers but GPS doesn't get activated.

I'll pay you to fix this. *PLEASE*

Basic info:
- I'm on The People's Rom GS3.17
- I'm using KTweaker and running one of their profiles
- I'm ATTEMPTING to use Tasker to regulate Wifi home/out and data home/outside
So pretty much here's my problem:
I've attempted to use Taster to make sure Wifi is ON when im at home and OFF when i leave home (according to cell towers)
I've also tried to make sure Data/Wifi is OFF when screen is OFF and ON when screen is on.
But even if Tasker was working perfectly, this problem still persists and this is it:
1) When I use WiFi at home, every so often, it will just shut off (even if the screen is on) and it will revert to 3G
2) The only solution to this is to turn off Wifi, then turn it back on, and only THEN will it capture the SSID and connect to the internet.
Example shown below:

In the above picture, "InternetOnly" is the SSID for my university and yet, with Wifi enabled, it doesn't access the damn SSID and the internet! It is using 3G. In fact, when I click to connect to that SSID, it says "out of range" which is BS. Only when I reset the Wifi connection does it connect me to the internet/ssid. Exact same problem occurs with the SSID at home. Wifi policy is set to sleep "never" btw.
As for Tasker, this is what I'm using for automation which is failing epicly (I deleted the task about cell towers because it was getting annoying):
I THINK the problem would work if I stock resetted my phone using ODIN but I don't want to
Someone please help.

Sounds like the connection Optimizer is kicking in. Have you disable/unchecked it? It's in Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks>Connection Optimizer
You can check out this thread here

It's not there for The People's Rom. IDK how to access it.
Did you try his zip?
Make sure of course that you back you system up first!

I just used Titanium to freeze it. Hopefully this will work. I haven't used the zip to remove it though, I'll wait this out a few more hours.

Okay so it happened again; I'm at home, and it was connected to WiFi, and now it's back to 3G even though WiFi is enabled. When I click to connect, it says "failed to connect to network" even though I'm literally a few feet from the router.
In TPR you have to freeze in Titbu just like you did good move. The settings have it removed because so many people where messing things up not knowing what they where doing.

Well so far I just flashed the .zip file and removed it altogether...let's see how it goes.
Any update on this? Just curious.

Yeah the update is that even after flashing the damn .zip, the WiFi still randomly disconnects from my SSID (even though the WiFi itself is enabled)
SUPER ANNOYING!!!
Should I just change the SSID? I heard sometimes it doesn't like upper-case letters and numbers.

[Q] How to disable 2G radio (voice)?

Anyone know how I can disable the 2G radio? I am using an LTE/3G data-only sim with IP calling, so have no need for 2G. In battery stats I get a solid red line for mobile networks, as the phone is always searching for a voice network unless I put it in airplane mode (no good because I need mobile 3G/4G data). I would like to restrict the radio to only 3G/LTE if possible. I have root and xposed.
You should be able to do it from the service menu. Sorry I don't know the dialer code but I'm sure I've seen it mentioned in one of these threads (I access it through 3c toolbox.)

I found the services menu, but that just sets preferred data network, same as you can do under mobile networks in regular settings. It doesn't result in disabling the 2G voice (as if the phone were an LTE capable tablet).
Have you tried the lte only setting?

Yeah, it restricts my data connection to 4G, but still get red bar for mobile network in battery stats and mobile standby stats report 100% no connection, so seems like it still searches for voice service.
You could try posting a request for someone to build an xposed module in this thread. You never know it might spark someone's interest.

Hello, I posted in Project T Kernel thread about battery drain and network signal search. The problem is that the phone is continuously using the cell network even when in airplane mode and no sim is present in both trays. I also get the same solid red line of continuous activity use of cellullar antenna. What does your battery stats details look with airplane mode on?

With airplane on it shows no mobile connection, as it should.
Solved
After some net trawling, found a thread on an English language Japan tech forum about the problems of using data-only MNVO sims on Android phones. It linked to some Japanese tech blog site with a datasimpatcher exposed module. Installed the module and BINGO! Now getting green for mobile connection in battery stats. Hopefully this will have a positive effect on my battery life.
Link to patch, in case anyone else uses a data-only sim:

Interesting, it should use less battery since mobile net signal bar is empty. Mine is full even without sim and in airplane mode, red bar means searching for signal and that modem power is on. How did you make the fix work? I don't see an option for zenfone 2, only samsung, htc, etc I installed but cellular network still full red line.
How you completely turn off cellular modem?
Turning on airplane mode should turn off your cellular radio completely. Strange that it doesn't. Regarding the patch, I simply installed it, turned on the module in xposed installer and rebooted. I left it in patch mode 0, which seems to work.
I still get a red line in battery stats. How did you manage to get rid of that?
@corrsea I bought 3c toolbox but I can't find the service menu option. Any idea?
Open battery manager in 3c. The middle button at the bottom of the screen is called tests. It opens the menu.

I deleted dialer&related stuff so it will fc -.- I only use VoiP. Do you get empty bars in cell network of battery details section?
Look at my earlier pic, modem always searching for signal (red=low signal or searching) even with no sim and airplane mode on. Some device's modem can be physically removed.
I found a flashable zip and script that will completely power off the cellular radio but it shows pie security check error in terminal -.-
