Installing KezraPlanes' Optimized ROM - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Instructions (quoted for reference):
(1) Reboot your phone into recovery;
(2) Make a backup of your current ROM;
(3) Wipe data/cache
(4) Format /system/
(5) Flash the ZIP
(6) Enjoy.
A few questions before I try this, because I'd like to save myself the pain of screwing up.
1. Will the phone's default recovery be adequate for this, or do I need to flash another custom recovery? If so, do I need to root the phone first?
2. What is the procedure to reflash the original ROM if I screw this up?
3. Will formatting /system/ wipe contacts saved to my phone?
4. How do I back this phone up as substantially as I can before I try this?
My apologies if these are stupid questions, I'm afraid I failed to find the answers googling. Thanks for reading and replying.

1. I would advise you to use Arco68's CWM Recovery
2. If you follow the instructions you shouldn't screw up, but you can always use ODIN to reflash in case that happens.
3. Yes it will. It will wipe everything. If you have your contacts linked to your Google account however you should be safe. In any case, you can always use GO Contacts to export your contacts to your SD card so you can go get them back later.
4. After flashing the recovery, do a backup from it. That's the best one can do.

Hy!
Can I restore my original stock ROM with CWM recovery if I created the nandroid backup with RZRcovery? I ask it because Rzrecovery can't restore nandroid.
It said Restoring /boot... Failed.
E:unknown volume for path [tar ...]
It writes unknown volume... to system.tar, data.tar, cache.tar.
I don't know what's wrong but I want to restore.

My phone is from TIM Brazil, and I wonder if this modded rom would work on my phone and what I'd need to change before trying to install. Also, considerinh the Antutu BM they got was 3740 and mine is 3707 with my stock ROM, I wonder what would the advantages be, other than a quicker boot and less junk installed.
Thanks guys!

[Q] n00b trying to nandoid

hi xda
first post, 2 week old first android phone (galaxy s GT-I9000).
I've just rooted my phone using super one click. im always reading that i HAVE to perform a nandroid backup before i do ANYTHING after i've rooted my device.
When i google "how to nandroid", i just get "get into recovery mode, select 'nandroid backup'.
But there isn't any back up options, only the standard 4 options: reboot, apply update, wipe data/facotry reset and wipe cache.
2 questions:
1) what must i do after rooting to make the nandroid option available? Surely doing THAT is doing something, therefore putting my phone at risk?
and thus,
2) what can i exactly do after rooting, before performing a nandroid? one click lag fix? normal use? installing a ROM? My understanding is that the nandroid backup is in case installing a ROM goes wrong, but then again a lot of the 'how tos' say you should instal clockworkmod, or rom manager before making a nandroid.
Please shed light.
Jon Alex
South Africa
You need a custom recovery like cwm installed to do a backup and for flashing ROMs. Whether you choose to do so is up to you, but there are advantages to being rooted either way i.e Apps that require root access to work.
thanks for your reply - please clear something up for me...
Everything i read says do a nandroid before you flash anything, but then it sounds like you have to flash a recovery ROM in order to do a nandroid?
Please let me know
1) how to install cwm recovery ROM and
2) what can go wrong? (since i'm doing this before making a nandroid)
3) can i install the recovery ROM before i root?
okay
at the moment i've got this far:
rooted? check. (super1click)
rom manager installed? check.
problem:
when i click flash clockworkrecovery ROM in ROM manager, it prompts me to choose my model (Galaxy I9000 International). Then it prompts me to allow poweruser functions, which i do. Then it saus something to the effect of "ClockworkRecovery ROM has been downloaded!"
note: not flashed, or installed, downloaded.
That finished the 'flashing' process. Now, if i select back up, it boots into recovery mode, but its still running the stock android recovery (2e), without any option to perform a nandroid backup!
How the hell do i do this? aargh.
help would be apprciated.
Go back into Rom Manager and again select install CWM and then backup current ROM. (sometimes it just needs doing again).
While you are using a stock ROM the stock Recovery will reassert itself on every boot, so having to flash CWM multiple times is not uncommon. Of course, this behaviour stops if you flash a custom ROM.
I've flashed it 3 times.. still no cwm recovery Rom... how many timed should I do this before trying something else, and what is that something else?
Just flashed another 3 times. Still nothing... please help!
THIS is the correct section for your device. I'm sure you'll find the answers you need there.
Good luck.

[Q] evo stuck on white screen when trying to backup current ROM to install new ROMS

rooted my htc evo 4g with android 2.2 using unrevoked3. Got superuser permissions. All rooted apps work well but I have one main issue. The issue is that when I use the ROM manager to backup current rom the phone cuts off and then goes to the white htc evo screen and stays there. I have to pull the battery and restart my phone so it can work. My understanding is that one must back up current ROM before installing other ROMs. The steps I am taking are as follows: 1. Go into ROM manager 2. Flash clockworkmod recovery 3. backup current rom. This is where my phone gets stuck on the white htc evo page. Someone please help so I can enjoy my phone. Thanks
in rom manager almost at the bottom o the menu there is an option that says flash alternative recovery or something similar and underneath it it says amon ra, flash that recovery it will put amon ra recovery on your phone, after that you reboot into recovery(turn phone off and then turn it on while pressing volume down, once in recovery you go to backup and select all, then back it up and after that you can wipe cache, dalvik, and data(you see those options when you click wipe in recovery mode) then you can go ahead and flash your rom

First of all Welcome! Now, just boot into recovery.Shut phone off>hold down the "Volume -" and press the power button> when in bootloader use the "Volume -" button to navigate to "recovery" and press the power button. You should now be in recovery now read the menus and navigate to where you can back up the rom.
EDIT: what he said ----/\

Okay, so you followed his instructions exactly? When you used rom manager to flash alternate (amon ra) recovery, did that complete successfully? If so, when you shut the phone down, and boot to the bootloader, then selected recovery, is that where you hang at the white htc evo 4g screen? It doesn't successfully boot to recovery, just hangs at the splash screen? If I understand you correctly, and that is accurate, then you should try flashing a recovery from the bootloader. Download the PC36IMG I'll attatch. Place it on the main directory of your SD card. (Now would also be a good time to put the ROM of your choice on your sd card as well). Be sure it's named exactly PC36IMG. Shut your phone off. Hold power and volume down button to get to the bootlaoder. Wait a few seconds and it should ask you to update. Select Volume Up. This recovery is Amon Ra V2.3. Once that's done flashing, don't reboot. Select no on reboot, and then choose 'recovery'. Do you successfully boot to recovery? If yes, go to 'wipe' Wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, boot, and system. You can also flash calkulin's format all.zip if you'd like. Once you're done wiping, go back to the main screen of recovery, and select 'flash zip from sd card' and then 'choose zip from sd card'. Then find the ROM that you put on your sd card, choose it, and flash it. Once done, reboot. That *should* work. If that's exactly what you already tried, I apologize, and report back, we'll come up with some other things to try. If you didn't try that, try it step by step.
when i am in recovery the options i see close to what your instructions state is backup/restore. i clicked on that but i dont see a select all. I see nandroid backup, nandroid restore, backup google proprietary system file and restore google prorietary system files. what do i choose. Thanks

huh.. I'm suspecting its your recovery thats bad. Download THIS and place it on the root of you sd card. Boot the phone into the bootloader by powering the phone down, then press the power and the volume down buttons at the same time> Once the phone boots into the bootloader the phone will automatically recognize the zip file. It will ask if you would like to update, select yes and let it do it's thing and you will be good to go.
you then can follow the instruction we posted earlier and hopefully it'll let you get into recovery mode to backup and flash roms.

That was correct! You want to select 'nandroid backup' > That is what you are creating. Once you select that, it will give you a list of what you want to backup. Check all the boxes, and then select 'perform backup'. It should take a few minutes to complete, and you'll see a bunch of ........ Maybe 4-6 lines of them. Once done, you can then do your wipe and flash your ROM, if you'd like

nandroid backup... and then backup google propritary then wipe the first 3 listed under the wipe menu and also flash the attached zip. Then you may flash the rom of your choice.
it stated that backup is complete. Do I need to reboot the phone? As far as wiping the phone, is that something that i can do in the ROM manager app? I ask these "silly" questions because i am fairly new to this. Some of the language is foreign to me.

No you dont need to reboot your phone. No you cannot wipe in rom manger. Do everything in recovery, learn to love recovery. It's your new best friend. Backup, wipe, and flash roms in recovery to save you a headache.
Is your SD card full? I had the same thing happen to me and realized I had no space available. You might try deleting some previous nandroid backups or other large files. If your card isn't full, then the other posters have the right advice.
EDIT: Looks like you got it working before I could submit my post. Hope the rest goes smoothly for you.

As blakeboy said, forget about ROM manager. You are far better off doing everything manually, in recovery. It's far more reliable, and is very easy to use anyways. And as was already posted, use the CalkulinFormat all.zip before you flash a ROM (after you make your backup, of course)
After wiping do i reboot system now or power off the phone so I can flash the zip you provided. These are the only options I have at this time?

no, wipe and then flash the zip then flash your rom then reboot
the reason you wipe then flash is because the zip adds extra wiping to ensure a clean flash of the new rom so to minimize the chance of a problems occurring.

You should be able to go back to the main screen of recovery, and then go to wipe. Do your wipes, and then go back to 'flash zip from sd card' And then choose your rom and flash it. Once it's done flashing, then reboot.
how do i flash the zip file to my sd card if my phone is not showing up on my computer?

[Q] Some question b4 installing Custom Rom

Just wanna clear some questions asap::
1) I have back-up using clockwork mod (ROM MANAGER) is that back up is a NAN-DROID backup?
2) Is Nan-droid back actually a stock backup?
3) I'm about to install CM ROM on my desire using ROM-MANAGER, i have a rooted desire but with S-ON, does this will cause any problem?
4) What S-ON exactly is for?
5) What happens if i don't wipe cache nd other stuff (dalvik cache)?

1. Yes
2. The backup is a copy of your phone the way it was when you backed it up.
3. I believe you need s-off.
You should read thread along with any other tuts you can find in the development section.

3) No.

thanx for answering, i'm still not clear with the S-ON thingy.
Also wht if i install a rom but then i find out that a radio for it have to be installed explicitly, so if i revert to old rom by restoring from the recovery mode, would i be back on my previous mode with radio functionality?

No matter what happens after clearing cache and factory wiping, as long as you have a nandroid backup you can return to the backed up ROM and everything is restored to the way it was.
And yes I'm pretty sure if you nandroid restore the radio functionality is restored to the way it was.
Do i have to download, install that adb shell thingy? What is it for?
OK i have done s-off, install CM 7, but had one problem, i can't install apps from Market, the download starts nd just stops with reporting any error, ny help will be appreciated.
Also if i want to go back to my previous ROM, should i just recover from the backup, can it be done using rom manager?

I guess you mean cm7 hboot? If yes, than you cannot download anyhting from market because its cache partition is to small. But this is easy to fix:
Open terminal emulator and then enter the following commands
Code:
mkdir /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache
su
cd /cache
mv download download.bak
ln -s /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache download
ls -ahl
Now you should be able to download apps from market again.
I already fixed it, the market applications were freeze and had to be defrost using Titanium Backup.
Thanx for the support XDA people
If i wanna go back to stock(to which i NAND backup), should i just click restore using ROM Manager/Recovery mode or had to do some thing else. Also should all the caches again have to be wiped?

[Q] Factory reset rooted DHD

Hello all.
I have had my DHD for over a year now and I rooted it as soon as I could. My reasons for rooting were to remove some of the stock installed apps (facebook, stocks etc). After a year though now my phone is jammed full of crap so i want to do a factory reset and wipe the phone clean and start from scratch. Am I able to do this having rooted?
Once I have cleaned the phone (by whatever means) i will be looking into the customs roms to try and change the look and feel of my phone for hopefully another happy year with my DHD.
Thanks in advance
Craig
Anyone able to help?
You have a lot of ways to do that...
one of them is to backup your apps and contacts and go to recovery, then wipe the phone and reinstall last rom or other roms...
my idea is to change your rom and try someone else...
and enjoy you phone...
so finally:
do a backup, go to recovery, do a wipe ( you can use android revelotion super wipe), reinstall rom or try another rom, and finally...enjoy...
Merry Christmas buddy...
A few things that I do.
Check out some rom screenshots and threads to see which roms interest you.
Backup your current APN to your sdcard with APN Backup & Restore so you can restore it with future roms. (So that you can make sure you are using the correct login/password etc. to connect to your carrier's data network.)
Make sure that APN Backup & Restore's apk is also on your sdcard so that you can install it from your card and not the Android Market.
Get Rom Manager on your phone so that you can easily reboot into recovery when you are ready to flash a new rom.
Make sure you have the new rom on your SD card waiting to be flashed.
Then when you are ready, reboot into recovery with Rom Manager.
Then once in ClockworkMod Recovery choose wipe data/factory reset and do that.
Then in advanced - wipe dalvik cache and then wipe battery stats.
(Then in mounts and storage - I also format system.)
Then install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard - choose rom file and flash away.
Be patient as the first boot up from flashing a rom can take a long time.
Once it boots up - disable data. Install APN Backup & Restore from your sdcard. Then delete the APNs that come with the new rom. Restore your original carrier APN from the backup you made. Then you can connect to the net with the correct settings and not get charged for the wrong data connection regardless of your contract. (I admit I'm sensitive to this, as it cost me a $1000 in data fees a few years ago here in Japan with Windows Mobile and SoftBank when I flashed and used the wrong APN regardless of my unlimited packet contract.)
Anyway, these are things I do which you might consider.
I don't usually lose root doing the sequence above.
Of course read the rom thread main pages to see if anything special applies.
Good luck. There are a few rom screenshots in my sig. I currently use MIUIAndroid. (It's updated every week.)
Good luck.
ps. You might want to format your sdcard before you do any of the above too, just to really clean things up. Don't forget to backup your data to your PC or something if you do.
Sorry - I didn't see the post above this one..

I will make sure I back up my APN then also. Anything else worth backing up?
I have had a look at the screenshots shown on your site, that helped thanks, but as said before, am i able to reload the stock rom, basically return to where i am now, but with a blank canvas?
Thanks again
Any pointers?
I can't remember but I think a simple factory reset via your current original rom will give you the blank canvas you want, but I think you'll lose root.
Someone else please confirm this or not? Do we lose root by doing a simple factory reset?
If that's the case and you don't mind losing root (until you root again) and you want the original rom you currently have then just do a factory reset via phone settings. The other stuff in the other post is for if you are changing rom completely. If you are going to use the same original rom you use now which came with your phone, then the APN settings will be the same and will be there again after you reset.
No you will not lose root!

[Q] Easiest way to get out of this boot loop?

Specs: I had Galaxy Nexus LTE 4.0.4 w/ unlocked bootloader and root access. I have the GN toolkit if that helps.
Cause: I used the Font Installer app to change system font. I now know that not all of the fonts are working properly and emailed the developer about it. However, I am currently stuck in a boot loop after changing to one of the fonts.
I would prefer to not lose everything and if I didn't care about that, then I would just go for it and I think that I could get it working again. But since it was just a font change, I thought it might be possible to fix it without going through all of that. I am hoping I can just change some system files or something and get it to boot then select a different .tff font that I know works. THANKS!
If I reload the 4.04 update.zip that I still can access, will that wipe everything/will I have to re-setup a bunch of things? Is it OK to clear cache partition and Dalvik Cache? Thank you.
Did you take a nandroid backup of this ROM at any point? If so, you could do an advanced restore of system only.

Ok I made the backup first. When I try to load the update.zip though, it says, "assert failed: appy_patch_check("/system/fonts/Roboto-Regular.ttf" <then a whole BUNCH of numbers and letters which I can type out if they will actually be helpful> "E:Error in /sdcard/Download/update.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted."
Is that an incremental update.zip for upgrading? What you need is a zip containing the entire ROM.
Alternately use fastboot to flash system.img from the stock ROM if you were already using stock.

Yeah I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481044 So I need to install 4.0.2 first? Unfortunately that is the only upgrade.zip I have on my phone and I don't know how to load new ones on there without booting into Android.

You can download another zip to your computer and use adb push to get it onto the GN's internal storage.
I don't have the CDMA version but here's what I am able to find. Check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481613
A completely stock 4.0.4 (aside from root, busybox, de-odex) from that thread is here:
http://dev-host.org/uMJ
So you download that to your computer and put it in the same folder as adb. Boot the phone into Clockwork Recovery and then plug it into your computer. (There are other guides to getting adb to work on your phone so I won't cover that here.) Run adb devices to make sure it sees your phone. In Clockwork you also have to go to mounts and storage and make sure /data is mounted.
Then:
adb push GalaxyNexusCDMA-4.0.4-StockRootedNoRadio.zip /sdcard/stock.zip
Subsequently in Clockwork, you will be able to find that stock.zip in the list of zips you can apply. After applying that zip, any damage caused by messing with the fonts should be reverted.

The alternative would be to download the factory 4.0.2 image from here:
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz
Inside that archive is a system.img file which you can flash to the phone by fastboot over USB. Immediately afterwards, you would then boot into CWM and apply the incremental update.zip you already have on there. This will take you to stock 4.0.4 unrooted and hopefully bootable!

While your instructions were good, I tried some things on my own about 20 min before you made that post and screwed up and erased userdata. So, I cannot say for sure if it would have worked, but I bet it would have and I wish I had been more patient.
Sorry to hear. Is it bootable now at least?
The userdata erase problem is why I now have to remember in every phone recovery situation - adb pull the entire contents of internal storage from within CWM before doing anything risky.

Yeah the phone has booted, I just have to spend some time recovering what I can. I will hopefully make better backups for the future. At least I learned some stuff. I still can't believe this was all caused by changing a FONT in a program designed to change fonts.

Right, well this font changer program edits the system partition of your phone, which makes it risky. In the future, the best course of action with any "risky" change is:
- Take a nandroid backup first.
- Copy the nandroid backup out of the phone (it's in a subfolder of clockworkmod on internal storage).
- If you are doing anything that leads you to fear that the whole internal storage could get blanked, copy all of that out of the phone too.
- Now if you can't boot, you can selectively restore the system partition or the whole thing to try and fix it.
- And now if your internal storage gets blanked, your backup is safe.

Yeah I had no idea that there was a significant risk involved, otherwise I would have been more cautious. Some questions I have:
-With Titanium Backup, the only thing I need to be running batch backups of is all user apps + system data correct? And only restore apps not system data unless I am on the exact same ROM as before?
-Again with TB, is there stuff it consistently misses that I should backup manually?
-I always launched CWM Recovery through the GN toolkit using "6. Flash CWM Recovery, Standard." And sometimes I would select Recovery from the Fastboot menu and it would be back at the regular recovery. Is there a different way I should have been going about getting to the nandroid backup?
-I have now installed ROM Manager and hit "Flash CWM Recovery" and I have a nandroid backup when I reboot into recovery. Does this mean any time I choose Recovery from the Fastboot menu that it will boot into CWM Recovery?
Thanks again for all your help and advice!
