Is it true that there are only a few locations that have 4G for sprint? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was in a sprint store and the woman turned off my 4g switch and told me to not use it because we don't have 4g in my city. She said we only have 3g (crappy towers at that). Is it possible only larger cities have 4g? I've even attempted to find maps of where the 3g towers were in my city to see if I could test the connectivity but there's nothing offered. I'm honestly not sure what to do.

Check out sprint.com they have a map that overlays all there locations with 3g and 4g and what not. short answer to your question is yes. 4g is pretty limited to major US cities and even then not the whole cities. Over time they should get more coverage but we'll see how switching to lte over WiMax plays out.

I live in the US - Raleigh NC area, they have pretty decent coverage here. But seeing as I just got my phone and Sprint about 3 weeks ago I can't talk about travel at a distance. Stormglove is right, check out sprints web site.

There are like 3 towers with wimax in the whole state of Arizona but Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the nation... Go figure

I live in Louisville, KY. Apparently there are like 2 WiMax towers here. Connection is pretty poor though, even within range of WiMax I can get repeated connects and disconnects.

I dont get how they can even advertise 4g for Sprint. The amount of towers they currently have deployed probably dont even cover 10% of the usa i bet. Theres 1 tower in my state i beleive and its not even on the sqme island as me :-( they should advertise it as such.. "sprint, slow ass 3g and 4g thats probably not even within distance of a IBM missel" cause there 4g is a fricken joke

I get great 4g in NYC 5MB/sec (in my house which is practically a dead zone for ALL phones >_>{LUCKY ME!!!!}) and 10MB/sec+ outside my house. hopefully LTE shows better results for the rest of sprint users. =(

Us Mexicans can't build there.. we are not allowed in Arizona... duh!

I would just test it. I live in Prescott, Arizona, and according to sprint.com there isn't a 4g tower for miles and miles. However, on average I get 3 bars of 4g n a connection speed of about 12 mbps. So I would just flip it on every now and then and see

Well in the case of when i was in Gurnee Ill around thanksgiving they actually lost 4g.
Thanksgiving 2010 they had 4g while i was down there, Thanksgiving 2011 they no longer had 4g the week i was down there...
Strange...

i get 4g in philadelphia... although as i go about town i'd say reception is spotty at best. if i'm in a good spot 4g blazes. if i'm in a car or certain areas, it's nil.
on another note, i think wimax is more or less dead on the water? there will be no more or few towers invested in by sprint since they want to be on lte by 2013. i could be recalling this info inaccurately; also since they piggyback off clear's wimax that doesn't mean clear will cease expanding their market - but i'm not sure about any of this, so take this post as speculation.

Just go to clear.com and check the coverage map to see tower locations for your area since sprint is using them for their 4g coverage

I wonder how accurate that map is, as i supposedly have 4g.
But its sparatic at best...
Although i suppose sparatic means coverage in that area.

I would consider sprint's 4g more limited in market area's meaning most major markets but not all. Im just outside nashville, tn (not a major market) and its here & have been since june of 2010 but coverage is more spotty than anything. I work in a all glass building and its up and down like a roller coaster trying to get it to stay connected vs switching to 3g. In my home it wont even connect to 4g but not a big deal to me. Personally i would have done some research to see which area's its in b/c paying $10 for premium data isnt quite getting your money's worth in a non 4g area.

To the comment about not covering more than 10 percent of the country. It is probably a lot less than that even. But, since 80 percent of our country lives in urban environments it doesn't matter.
You won't get any type of 4G when your cruising down I-70 in BFE. But, it works fine in St. Louis or Kansas City. Even on a bigger carrier you have a similar problem.

4G In Chicago

Anyone have connection problems with 4G in Chicago? I'm running Myn's 2.2 and connect to 4G and average 4.5 MBS. However my phone constantly switches back to 3G.

For chicago it really depends on where you are. Check out clearwire's website for coverage, they list where their towers are. This is what I have figured out, if there are not more than 2 towers around a building it will give you spotty coverage. If you are above the 25th to 30th floors your coverage will be hit or miss. If you are in the loop/financial district your coverage will be very hit or miss due to the size of the high rises general lack of towers. The best bet is if you know anyone with clearwire's 4g ask them. They will know where they best coverage is and where there is none.
For the suburbs, 4g is WAY better, it is seriously night and day. I think the lack of high rises make it easier for 1 tower to cover a larger area more consistantly. Also many of the metra routes and highways (290, 88, 294) have towers along them so usually 4g coverage if pretty good while commuting.

Wimax coverage expansion?

What is the likely hood of wimax coverage areas expanding.....I work one town away and can connect no problem there.....also one town over in another direction is fine.....but sitting in my house I can barely connect....and that's after some tweaks using my MSL...
I guess im wondering if coverage areas actually begin to expand or if coverage in my house is a long way away......I live about half an hour or so north of Boston if that helps....

My brother works for Clearwire. The company rolling out Wimax for Sprint. Sprint actually owns 51% of Clearwire.
At the moment, Clearwire is not doing as well as they thought they would. But, they are still building. He (my bro), is a contractor who does what they call "site acquisition". This means they ask him to find land, or leases so that they can build a tower.
The short answer is yes, Clear/Sprint continue to expand their Wimax network. The caveat is that the speed at which this is done, depends on if and when Sprints financials can get into the black.
The bottom line is that Sprint has to keep rolling it out. Just like 3G years ago, it will eventually be widely available on all carriers. But like 3G, the carriers with the most money will probably spread their 4g network the fastest.
Very good. With this new 4G race you can bet Sprint will start putting it's coverage in high gear
Thanks for the info...I can't wait till i can use it inside my house!

[Q] Horrible service in the I. Ę.

Anybody else living in the inland Empire experiencing horrible sprint service? I've looked at there towers and noticed, they don't have much here. Sometimes 3g data speed is so slow it takes ages just to load Google home page :/ any input would be helpful. I don't know if it's my modem affecting the data speeds or if it's the service.
Where are you? By inland empire, do you mean the great plains of the America (Empire)?
Can you do a speedtest and show what you're getting?

Pretty sure it's in California
Yes inland Empire in California. Any of you experiencing bad service? I go to school in Ontario and I get phenomenal 4G speeds. But I'm at school so I'm not always able to do what I want on my phone. After School I go home in Moreno Valley, and the service there is just horrible.. Almost to the point where I want to cancel my 2 year agreement. And I have been a loyal sprint customer for 8 years.
I live in the LA area and i get good speeds everywhere except in my house i dont get 4g and 3g is like dial up for me. Check out my speedtest below. I have wifi in my house so ehh no biggy.
The phone is so awesome
Im willing to wait for LTE to start spreading in LA i still got along time before i can upgrade so in the mean time i can deal wth it sprint unlimited is why im here and no longer with Tmobile.
travel to Long Beach frequently, and my 3g is actually fairly decent. around 300-600 kbps? thats 2x faster than what im getting in phoenix... i hope its not getting bad as part of Network Vision, heading that way in 2 weeks...
I live in the I.E. and yes sprint has horrible coverage in alot of places. That's the reason I got a airwave free for my home, cuz I get almost no service otherwise. If you look at the tower upgrade thing it says my area is gonna get a few enhancements over the next 6 months. So you should check your area and see if moval or the cities/places you frequent have planned upgrades before you cancel

Alright I will. Airwave? You got an Airwave free for your home? Please explain this.... I'm a little confused, what is that? and 6 months of superrrrrr slow service is a lifetime.. I need my E4GT. :/
I don't think and Airrave will help with data issues.
Do you have good voice reception?

Yes I get good voice reception, do you mind filling me in on what that is? I usually have data off when I go home. Cause there's no point at all having it on if it takes 5mins to load just the Google home page. When I'm in Ontario I have phenomenal 3g and 4G speeds. But once I hit Moval it just takes a dump. It's very very aggravating..

I live in the Inland Empire (Hemet) I am cancelling my Sprint Service because of the ungodly Data speeds. frequently 200kbps or less. I'm moving over to T-Mobile. I called Sprint the other day to ask what my ETF fee would be. The representative started arguing with me about T-mobiles fake 4G and how its not a real solution. I came back with two things first "What 4g? I dont have any 4g where I live. I don't even have 3g. The speeds I am getting are Edge speeds" and then Secondly "T-Mobiles fake 4g is real and tangible now. Its also faster then any 4g speeds I have ever clocked on sprint in Brea, Long Beach, Sacramento, Chicago and Manhattan. The question is, "Fake 4g Now or Real 4g Never?"
My friend has a Comet (Google it, its a pathetic entry level android phone) he is able to get consistent 2.5Mbps down anywhere in my town. Also a Coworker has the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile. Clocking around 14Mbps on T-Mobiles fake 4g network. I never saw more then 7 on Sprints 4G, Ever.
The Airave is a joke. You essentially turn your internet into a cell tower. think about this.... you pay sprint for service that you provide yourself by using the internet that YOU pay for...... hmmm seems like a cop out for them to offer that as a fix all for their poor towers.
I use to love Sprint back in the days of the Hero. When I could easily get 1.2 Mbps down anywhere I went. I dont know if they are just overloaded in the area, or the towers are in need of some TLC but I just cant take it anymore. GSM here I come.

I just remembered that.. I went flash crazy this month.. And forgot to update my PRL. I've always read that it's good to do that after flashing a rom. And about the modem.. I'm on El29. Sprint adds Kansas City and Baltimore to list of LTE markets

If you've been waiting to see if your 'hood would be next up for Sprint to bless with a shiny new*LTE networkwe've got some potentially good news: by mid-2012 both Kansas City (regardless of what side of the Kansas / Missouri border you happen to be on) and Baltimore will be online. Those two cities will bring the total number of Sprint LTE markets to six, as they join the previously announced Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Atlanta. The carrier and CEO Dan Hesse refused to be any more specific about a launch date on today's earnings call, though, we can tell you the service should be launching alongside the*Galaxy Nexus,LG Viper*and a Sierra Wireless mobile hotspot capable of connecting via CDMA, WiMAX and LTE. Check out the PR after the break for more details.Show full PR textBaltimore and Kansas City Sprint Customers to Benefit from 4G LTE and 3G Enhancements in 2012Sprint adds to the list of cities to benefit from new and improved network technology by mid-year

I was a bit shocked KC wasn't announced from the start. I knew or wouldn't take long. I bet they already have lte in Overland Park so they could test the new phones. Plus, the improved cdma will be great. I have horrible signal in my neighborhood(Briarcliff). The airrave helps a lot. Tye funny thing is they mentioned KU vs MU in the press release even though we all know that the chances of playing anymore are slim. Anyways, it is a pointless rivalry. KU sucks just like Johnson County and the rest of those cake eaters. Lol

I was told a while back it was kind of going to rollout in reverse meaning markets that don't have 4g would get the LTE first then the markets with WiMax would follow. ...in New Jersey now and the 3g has been great here. I haven't tested 4g much since I have Fios in the house..edit..I would imagine the major cities would have to follow very soon after because they need that advertising money...meaning L.A. and New York probably wont be far behind. there's a network vision site in north jersey right now. just googled it... Branchburg, NJ. about an hour drive for me.. but i've been considering making the drive to test it.
I'm fortunate to be in an area where sprint has great coverage, and speeds are really good. I'm usually getting bandwidth test speeds of over 1 mb/s, and sometimes even crest the 2 mb/s mark in the evenings. I rarely use 4G, one because my desk is on the other side of the building from the tower, so the signal barely makes it to my desk, and at home, it isn't all that great, either. I'll be curious to see if my data speeds improve on 3G once the NV initiative hits my neck of the woods. I'm also one of the first metros listed to get LTE when it comes out, but will wait to get a compatiable device until the Galaxy Nexus hits CL/Ebay for a decent discount.

[Q] does anyone have 4g?

hey guys i was wondering if any of u guys have 4g because when i got my phone i asked about the 4g and they said satelite wont be setup till late october or november and when i go to school and i enter my class on the 3rd floor i get 4g which is fastttttt but then when i leave its 3g or no bars does anyone have an idea when its coming or something?
You must get it on the fourth floor because you are closer to the satellite. As they upgrade the satillites you will notice it working on the 3rd floor then second, then everywhere.
Maybe telling us what city you are in to begin with would be appropriate?

As Sprint continues their Network Vision deployment, 4G signal will become better and better. However, even with max signal outside of a building, you may still only get 3G inside (depending on the building). Since Sprint's 4G operates on the 1900 band, it doesn't have as much in-building penetration as Verizon/AT&T which operate at lower frequencies. Additionally, 4G simply cannot reach as far as 3G...and 3G cannot reach as far as 1X. This is just how the technology works, unfortunately.
Sprint's LA Metro area is scheduled to have all of their Network Vision (4G) tower upgrades done by January 2013. LA North was supposed to start in Jan. 2013, but it looks like they are starting early as of this month. Overall, Network Vision should be done by end of 2013.
In Chicagoland, 4G LTE has started appearing all over, even with official coverage in some areas. My phone usually jumps between 3G and 4G multiple times a day, depending on how much traveling I am doing.
As always, check out coverage.sprint.com for the offical 4G LTE coverage maps in your area.
