[Q] Original ICS for Desire? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anybody know, if HTC is going to build a stock ICS-version? Because Samsung is going to make one for the SGS, which is released only two months later, and it has more or less the same system specification.
PS:Sorry for my bad english, I'm still a student

No. It almost didn't get Gingerbread.

but the desire got gingerbread, look here: htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads

And it has hardware specs superior to Desire, not to mention 15 times larger internal memory.

Also known as: Lazy corporations not caring about the customers. F*ck HTC, bad build quality, not keeping phones up-to-date, only good thing is their customer service which fixed my phone every time no questions asked. Next phone will be Samsung.

You think HTC is bad build quality? Whenever I hold a SGS2 in my hand, ive got the feeling im holding a worthless piece of plastic. I still have a few months to think about the new phone im goinna pick, but I think I will miss Sense too much once I choose a non htc phone.

No, as the others already said, there wont be an original ICS-ROM for the Desire.
And the user "stankyou" meant by saying "No. It almost didn't get Gingerbread." that the stock Gingerbread ROM on Desire is just a light version of GB.
And yeah, its really a evidence of incapacity of HTC to not support a not even 2 years old flagship (at the time it was launched) smartphone. But Samsung and most of the other Android smartphones producers are quite the same unfortunately. Only Sony (Ericsson) showed way more effort in the last few months.
And for me HTC really lost the lead in technology a bit and some people are also saying that the devices of HTC suffer the loss of manufacture quality. My next Phone will probably be a Samsung even though the quality of the covers isnt the best.

There are several ICS Roms in development - but these are all stock.
I'd imagine once HTC Roms with ICS start getting out in the wild, somebody will probably try and port them to the Desire.
Considering the limited hardware, I wouldn't hold out too much hope for them being any good though.

Wrong. Samsung isn't releasing ICS for the original Galaxy S. They might be releasing a 'value pack'.
And im100% sure that the original Desire won't get ICS officially.

[Q] Any news on New HTC Sense for Desire?

Hi All,
Anyone know of any news whether we will be getting a ROM Upgrade or a HTC Sense update for the Desire at all?
Thanks
read on a thread somewhere in here that it is coming to desires in december.
Or u could always flash hd rom. Sense hd i mean
Patience my friend, it's coming in December
Aye December, my guess is it will be included with Gingerbread update.
Yay! Thanks guys, I love this board so much. Maybe it sounds odd, but I hate flashing ROMs rather than using the stock ones. Just feels dirty
Awaiting December.
what have you guys been smoking there will be no gingerbread or sence update i can guarantee you that

experience.... first of all the desire is nearly a year old, waaay to old for htc support in my experience. secondly, htc want us to buy new handsets not keep our old ones, it makes no sence updating old hardware. and finally, the htc legend is only a few months older than our desire and they dont even have froyo yet, so you give me an example of htc supporting year old hardware with new software updates and i will rescind my comments

What you say is true, of course hTC would want us to buy the Desire HD & Z, but the Desire is less than 7 months old (announced in April, realeased in May/ June), not 1 year old, that means nearly all Desire users are still bound by their contracts. If hTC was to abandon the Desire, how would their customers feel? that hTC keeps on pushing out new models but leaving the older models to wither & die? I think not...
but only time would tell

good point were all second guessing htc anyway, only they know what devices there going to continue to support
If the new Sense doesn't come to Desire do you think it'd be possible to at least get HTC's offline Maps app - like they have with other features?
I bought a Hero when it came - so I know all about HTC not supporting devices. The first update I got for that phone came in June (Eclair).
And the thing about that update was that it came in two packages. It was a ****ty update I didn't use.
It's a fact that HTC doesn't support their own devices. When it comes to the Desire, I'm hoping they won't **** on us again, it's not outdated yet.
Or maybe it is to HTC - Still. I'm going to have this phone for another 9 months so it'd be nice with at least one official update.
HTC - "We make new phones for you.
Get rid of the old one, seriously."

Nothing makes me angry than ignorance. This is ignorance of the highest order. The iPhone 3G was released in July 2008 and it's still getting firmware updates. The Desire is barely 7 months old.

The iPhone is an iPhone.
The iPhone was not made by HTC
Apple makes the iPhone
HTC and Apple are not the same
Apple/iPhone - supported.
HTC/Any device - unsupported.
It's not ignorance. It's basic knowledge. HTC doesn't continue supporting devices. Apple might. HTC doesn't.
Then again, that's one of the reasons XDA exists.

dont call me ignorant, instead educate yourself, the reason even 2g iphones still get firmware updates is so apple can keep the tyrannic grip on what software they use!!! htc dont use this method, and after owning maybe 10 htc devices in the last 10 years, i think i can speak with experience.

Wasn't really trying to start a rumor. Just that gingerbread is expected from Google 4th quarter and new sense expected December made sense to me that HTC would wait and give one last update together.
i seriously hope that's the case, but it seems unlikely and I think It'll be up to XDA to get gingerbread onto the Desire...
It makes me kinda sad to read this. I know it's true and yet I always hope HTC changes their game plan and just support older devices.
I know they want ppl to buy their new devices but why would you buy a HTC you can only use for roughly a half year and then get outdated software.
Why not choose for a Samsung Galaxy S? mayB they have better support for their devices (just an example).
but I hope we all get proven wrong!!
There is a reason because HTC is going to upgrade our Desires. I think HTC want to boost the htcsense.com portal and for this, new sense is required, and what hardware can use new sense? Only Desire. So it’s a way to get a lot of users without waiting the sales of Z and HD

no, older phones can also support HTCSense, this can be proven as they announced that all future HTC Android devices will support HTCSense (both Entry level [eg.wildfire type] and Enterprise level [eg. Desire type]). but HTC are holding them off entry level phones as they are stingy and want us to buy more phones from them.

HTC Annoucement related to 2.3 and Sense

http://www.facebook.com/notes/htc-romania/gingerbread-pentru-htc-desire/223475751011104
They say that HTC Desire memory doesn't support Sense and 2.3. As usual, the smart guys around here proved that it does work
It doesn't have the memory for it, we know that. The Devs have proved it can run it but only using EXT partitions on the SD card which Google won't use as the average user won't know how to make one
Quote:
"Our teams of engineers have worked hard in recent months to update the Gingerbread HTC HTC Desire without compromising Sense experience that you have grown accustomed to our phones. However, we are sorry but we must assume that there is enough memory to allow portability and storage Gingerbread experience on HTC HTC Sense Desire. We are very sorry for the disappointment that this news will cause many of you."
So... They say it will stick on froyo or update with old sense?

So HTC say that the phone can't run Gingerbread and Sense - but the leaked one did...?
so why not leave the old sense on and update the phone - or better yet - update it to the latest version of Froyo and fix the bugs with the HTC mail etc. so that it can work with Hotmail EAS...
little things would be nicer than squat... even though I'm not going to use it
Well, this is my first and last htc device.
I totally don't care... Sense UI sucks, CyanogenMod, MIUI & AdamG are the best

That's a shame - I do like HTC's phones and the only thing that let this phone down was the low internal memory situation, and their excuse for this too.
I'd buy another but i'd be a little cautious about it next time.
My Blackstone/Touch HD is still working very well, and that hasn't had any updates for ages but it looks like a NAND image may be coming soon for it which will spring some life into it again...
So the Desire is far from dead as the dev's here can perform miracles sometimes...
still plan on keeping my phone for the remainder of this year at least with the hopes that the custom roms keep me going!
Wow, a lot of fickle people on this forum...
Guys, we were never guaranteed updates from HTC at any point. The fact we got FroYo was because it was the top line device at the time. You can't compare the Wildfire S to the Desire. The Desire is over a year old, the Wildfire is less than a month old - of course it'll get a new version.

I mentioned before that the Google I/O stated that manufacturers should put the latest version on phones if the hardware can cope - if that applies here then that is a great get-out-clause for not upgrading the desire..
although - we do know that HTC worked on it - see leaked rom.

... but don't forget; when desire came to the market (April 2010) it came with v2.1 eclair, then abt 4 months later, upgraded to 2.2 froyo whereas SE-X10 came with 1.6 (donut) almost at the same time with the desire and upgraded to eclair in November or December 2010, on the other side, Samsung Galaxy-S came with eclair in summer 2010, upgraded to froyo just two or three months ago (know that it will receive GB too soon).. shortly I cannot blame or judge HTC with that; when I decided to buy my Desire, it was the best choice to date (April 2010). Now the only way to root and step into the cooked rom world.

[Q] Sensation or DHD

Hi All,
I have the chance to get a Sensation tomorrow for free
I currently use the DHD and think the phone is awesome. Has anyone here had experience with both? I just wondered if the Sensation actually compares to the DHD or if it has any problems etc.
The main thing I can see immediately is the Sensation still doesn't have full root where as my DHD has boot unlocked and full root access so I swap my roms around quite often. Hopefully this will come soon to the sensation.
Anyway, if people who have already defected or played with both could let me know whether I'll feel impressed if I do get the Sensation please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks!
never mind,... only searched the DHD forums... just found this on the sensation forums.
same question sorry!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170169
I think you should go for sensation as i dont think its gonna take too long for the developers on xda to root it. hope for the best
Moreover its better to have latest hardware to be future proof as the mobile hardware is improving drastically with cellphones having dual core processors and 1gb ram
For free? Seriously? Then why you're still asking this question? Just go for it already. You're the 2nd person i've met who gets sensation for free.
Dammit you're so lucky.

Won't be necessary. Htc have announced they will be unlocking the Sensation bootloader via ota in August. The phone is already rootable for those who were light enough to get themselves an unlocked engineering phone.

Thanks for the replies everyone even though this is a double post
Sounds fairly unanimous to me, guess I'll have to pick it up
sensation definitely
I wouldn't go for the Sensation just yet, because I don't see any direct benefits from it, except for the higher resolution screen and the dual-core CPU. It is even a downgrade in some terms, since it's flash memory is smaller than DHD's. 1080p recording isn't a big of a deal, since the camera quality is just as bad as with all the other HTC devices. If you are after the fancy Sense 3.0 stuff, you can have it on your DHD with custom ROMs already. Plus, the high res is relatively new and there are still apps on the market you will have issues with. Thus, I would wait (and I will ) for the next flagship device, when the high res stuff is well established and there are no compatibility issues etc.
BUT, if you can get it for free and can live without root for some time, it's a different story, of course. Since its value is higher than that of DHD, I would probably go for it, but only to sell it later and get the next, proper flagship device
Funnily enough svyat that was my initial thought on the matter but you seem fairly certain this won't be HTC's flagship device. I don't really follow this stuff as much as I used to, do you know something I don't?? Do HTC have something else hidden away that they are going to sneak out anytime soon?
Cheers.

Flagship phones only remain so for around 6 months, so continually clamouring after the latest-and-greatest is futile. If your Sensation is 'free' on a new 18/24 month contract, I'd be inclined to wait and see what HTC announce in the next couple of months...

For the last point, read ROMs and the knowledge base.

Good-bye (and thanks for all the fish...)

After yesterday's disapointing release I finally bit the bullet and got a new 'phone from my network operator. I was offered a choice between the HTC sensation and the Samsung Galaxy II and I went for the latter mainly because I was not impressed with the HTC approach to the GB update. I will move to reading their section in xda.
To all those that have helped me either through lurking on their threads or by answering my questions I just wanted to say thank-you!

if you want updates you need to go Nexus really.
Samsung are flavour of the month for the moment - but remember their FroYo release? It took about 3-4 months after HTC's release...
Failing that you just need to go AOSP with a custom rom - which you can do on almost any handset.
Perhaps you should address your goodbye to HTC directly

I love my Desire
I love the my Desire, and pretty sure it is going to be the Android phone I would use for at least 1.5 years.
The main reason being there are so many Desire users, the ROMs just keep coming and getting better.
Like op i've moved from a desire to a sgs2 for many reasons, mainly my contract was up and I didn't like the lag on the sensation screen! But what gets me is how many people keep going on about custom roms for the desire. Of course there are loads the phone is old in tech year's, I'm sure the same will happen to the sgs2 in about 6 months, but to be honest I don't find much difference between the 2 apart from never having to think about how many applications I can have. Ie running out of memory! As they say you pay ya money and make ya choice.

True, but Samsung didn't promise Desire users Gingerbread and a new version of Sense and failed to deliver.
I got the Desire based on this, and know I feel they flipped the finger, so I can't really blame OP for ditching HTC.
I'm surprised google didn't have a word with them since google set out a baseline for all phone manufacturers that each handset should get at least 18 month's of updates? Therefore google is saying the max size each version of android is gonna be and the processing power requirements! It's like the htc wildfire this will never see gingerbread as it has the same if not less memory and power than the desire! Yet its a newer phone than the desire! Or is it google just doesn't care? And is letting phone manufacturers get away with it?

I love when people talk about companies "promising" something and then moan when it doesn't happen. Reminds me of the old days in the school playground...
From what I can see, HTC did thier best to deliver, but unfortunately the constraints of the device stopped them being able to do more. What do people expect them to do, come over and upgrade the memory in each phone?
Some people just want the moon on a stick.

No JB ROM has Sense right now.
HTC has not released JB for any device as of yet. JB will come only with One X+. Even then it will probably take 2-3 months for Sense with JB to work for DHD. Atleast not unless One V or One S get their JB updates(if any).
I think our phone get old .. we should buy one x

So then, only the users who want it would run it, while the others would simply cancel it. This is a no-brainer. Other companies have done this, so I don't see why HTC can't. Re-partitioning and loss of data is no excuse for a company to renege on their promised upgrade. At best, they could have released an RUU on HTCdev for our phone just like they did for the HTC Desire GB upgrade. That way only really knowledgeable users would run it.
The truth is, they never started work on ICS for the DHD at all. *Every* other HTC phone had an ICS leak a month or two before they officially got it. The DHD had none. They never started work on the DHD, because they didn't want to spend their time and money on the oldest phone in the list, expecting people to buy their new One series instead. That's a crap move. It wouldn't be that bad if they didn't promise the upgrade in the first place and then go back on their word, but they did. Motorola did the same thing with the Photon 4G and 2 other phones. At least we got Froyo > Gingerbread. Those phones were stuck on GB their entire life, and Motorola had the gall to offer a $100 discount (not cash-back) for customers of these phones, if they purchased newer Motorola phones.
On the other hand, you have Sony Mobile which us releasing alpha stage ROMs of upcoming upgrades to the community, along with kernel source code for the alpha ROM, taking suggestions from the community and actively working together to develop that ROM. That is how a company should be. Motorola is crap and HTC has gone far down that route. They just don't care. Sony as a company can't work to upgrade all their phones all the time too, because ultimately it costs time and money, but to counter that they are actively helping the community by providing drivers and binaries for custom ROMs. This is the reason more or less all Sony Xperia phones (low-end to high-end) have official CM support. HTC and Motorola make great phones but their business practices and ideologies are just wrong.
