Camera quality? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello!
I have a Sensation and had a sgs2 before, I wonder how does the Galaxy Nexus compare to them in both photo shots and video recording.
Do you think devs can emulate 8mp on the GN?
It's the only thing with the size of the phone that are stopping me of buying it

5 or 8 or 12 it doesn't really matter.
the camera quality of GN is really not so good (it is just OK but it could be better... more better) and it can't compete with sgs2 or iphone or other smartphones with nice camera but people bought GN not for camera, i think we all knew its quality from reviews.

Comparing the GN photos and video to those phones is sure to disappoint. The Sensation offers some of the best video quality I've seen on a phone and the SGS2 takes wonderful photos (and great video!).
If photos and video are important to you, stick with what you have or wait for new phones to be available in April. The Sensation should be getting ICS next month and that will make it a better device over the GN, in my opinion. It has better battery life, a better camera, performs better, etc.
What is your reason for wanting the GN?

Simply the HD screen
But only the white version

As a former SGS2 owner, I can say that in comparison the GN camera sucks. However, it's a great phone and the camera is on par with last year's cameraphones.

the bad quality mainly is from the super poor photo format compression
i wonder why there have not been any expert user modifying some codes for it
I had a nexus one and someone modified a set-profile file and the compression of the photos improved so much...

[Q] After lack of Galaxy Nexus, better to get the SGSII?

So, after being a bit disappointed by the recent announcement (and 5MP camera) I think I will just sell my Nexus S and get an international SGSII. Better camera and available now, and will have ICS ROMs soon.
Anyone else feel the same way?
Nope sorry still rather have Nexus but to each their own.

not for me , as matter of fact , Pixel is NOT most important characteristic to the camera , have you seen a video that compares iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus of shutter speed?
http://v.youku.com/v_showMini/id_XMzE0MTgyNjc2_ft_6.html
look at shutter speed , Galaxy Nexus took 6 pictures while 4S just took 3 ...
shutter speed, imaging ...etc are also important
otheriwse , for exmple 15 MP with dozen seconds of shutter or 5 MP with half second of shutter, which one do you choose?
beside , i don't think human eyes can see much different between image made by 5MP or 8MP
if you really like to take picture , then why don't you buy a professional camera?
Folks, I get the megapixel race isn't the end all.
I'll probably wait on the Galaxy Nexus but I wanted to get your thoughts.
And I have a DSLR, but have trouble fitting it in my pocket. So, I want the best possible camera on a phone for when I am out and about and not wanting to lug a huge beast of a camera with me.
Nexus alllllllllllll the way. U kidding me! Lol galaxy nexus awesome. And I have the sgs2 international. Would dump it in a sec for a nexus

More pixel does not equal better camera. Let's stop with this silliness.

Well, judging from the blurry grainy shots on Engadget and thisismynext.com, color me not impressed by the Galaxy Nexus' camera.
I mean, yeah, the camera has zero lag and takes turrrbo photos, but if they all look grainy/out of focus/blurry, I care not.
Just IMO, per usual internet rules.

MP count doesn't equate to image quality.
my old nikon d40 DSLR only have 6mp but of course it took much better pictures than any mobile phone cameras on the market.
the image sensor size, engine and lens/optics are what matters most.
My gf has a S2, sure its nice, but the touchwiz interface is meh... and for its size, the screen is really lacking the extra resolution of the new Nexus. Remember the S2 came out many months ago already, it's new in the USA but not really latest tech.
A great phone though, im not trying to give it a bad rep, just saying new Nexus really is the new tech.

for example
nexus one camera and nexus s camera have same MP count.
but nexus s camera output is much better than nexus one's.
i have both phones so i know how frustrated i am with nexus one's camera.
So how does everyone defend the poor sample photos from the Galaxy.
Serious question....

Engadget and this is my next are very iPhone centric fanboy sites. I'm waiting for tests done by someone that knows what they are doing and not trying to make it look bad. Not saying that was done here but apparently Engadget screwed up pictures from the Nokia phone twice. Once in comparison with the iPhone 4 and then most recently with the iPhone 4s test. Given that, someone there doesn't know how to use a phone that isn't Apple made. Take those photos with a grain of salt.

I went from Nexus S to the Galaxy SII and I wish I could go back. Sure, it has a better screen and camera but the software is buggy and bloated. I tried to put on cyanogen but that one still has a lot of bugs as well. My Nexus S was rock solid.
I will definitely be trading in my SII for the new Nexus.
I am not a camera person myself and I really don't a **** about them to be honest. They have reached the point where they are acceptable to me on a smartphone.
Now that that's out of the way. On to engaget and basically all the other mobile sites. They all suck and are complelely useless in everything they cover. Apple/android/windows it don't matter really. They are just flat out terrible. The camera may be ****. It may be really good. But ihmo to come to a conclusion based on those idiots is foolish.
If you want a real rundown of a device wait for anandech to cover it.
I LOL @ people that don't choose a phone because it only has a 5MP camera compared to 8MP on other phones.

no, but it means more cropping options. probably also better photoshopping options.
the only thing worse then people thinking mpx is everything is people screaming they're nothing. i'd kill for another 6 on my 12mpx Nikon just for cropping. much cheaper then a tele lens i generally don't need and can't afford even if i needed it.
ontopic - i like official updates, so Nexus beats Galaxy S any day. Size and price will be key, camera is irrelevant.

New Phones.. Thoughts..

So.. HTC One series, Samsung GSIII. Never a dull moment in the Android world. The only plus that any of these phones have over the Galaxy Nexus in my opinion is the camera. If the GN had a proper camera (I don't care about megapixels.. Just want good IQ) I would stick with it for a very long time. In the mean time, I'll be skipping these latest temptations in the hopes that next years Nexus delivers.. How do the rest of you feel?
The camera is fine since the 4.0.4 update but nobody seems to care.
I really am just fine with it.
I also find the camera in the nexus to be... adequate and I definetely have seen an improvement in photo quality since 4.0.4. Also 1080p videos taken on the Gnex, and subsequently viewed either on the Gnex or a TV, are absolutely awesome.
My two cents:
I like the One X because it improves on both processor and screen technology. LCD2 is said to really outshine the HD SAMOLED, and the OMAP4460 in the GNex is obviously no match for the S4. (Not as big a fan of Tegra3, to be honest).
As for the GSIII, this is exactly for me to 2012 what the GSII was to 2011. No major improvements in screen tech (800x480 for SII, same HD SAMOLED as GNex for SIII), and a processor/gpu combo that ruins everything currently available. Say what you will about A9 vs. Krait/A15, the Exyons 4 is the fastest thing out right now hands down.
Given the above analysis One X is obviously the better phone, as it improves on both the areas that matter, right? I dunno, honeslty. I can live with non-removable battery, I can even live with no SDcard slot... but BOTH? Kind of a tough pill to swallow.
Conclusion: Sticking with the GNex for now.
Camera works fine and looks great for me .
The gs3 doesn't seem like a worthy update, I'll wait for the next nexus.

Perfectly fine with my GN. Funny thing is...this is the first time in a long time where I didn't have the impulse to get the latest and greatest. I checked out the specs on the new S3, while it's a really nice phone, it's nothing that's revolutionary per se.
I'm perfectly fine with the camera on the GN. Still worlds better than picture on film cameras people used to carry back in the day. Picture quality is perfectly acceptable to me.
If anything else I'll probably more than likely upgrade when the next Nexus phone debuts. I'm used to having vanilla envelope Android OS on my current and past Android phones. Still can't do skinned OS.
I'm holding on to this until Google slashes the next nexus to what the galaxy nexus is now maybe even a little bit longer

Anyways, if the GN didn't exist I would probably go for an HTC One series phone. Camera, screen, and build quality are really appealing. GS3 didn't do much for me, although I'm not interested in a quad core phone unless Ubuntu for Android is on it. It did have some interesting features that are software based. All that did for me is get me excited for possibilities of future Android updates.

I like your video (song/editing/etc), but honestly I'm not too impressed with the quality of the M's camera. While the video focuses in occasionally and gets a little more crisp, for the most part, it looks like the quality of a home video from the 70s, just taken in today's environment. That's by no means a hit on your video, but the M's camera. Which, if I was totally honest, frustrates me more each day with its inconsistencies. I have 3 young kids, so an impromptu shot here and there happens a lot... but most of the time I can't trust this camera and it takes a few "takes" to get a decent shot - which obviously doesn't work with little kids!
It would be one thing if that was the norm, but c'mon Motorola, put some effort into your camera already - Samsung/HTC and obviously Apple are killing you in this area!
I understand that you're not impressed with the quality. I'm still happy to jump my RAZR M from DX. If I want a better quality camera, Canon or GoPro is what I'll like to use.

While I would also like to see a better camera on a phone, I can't agree with that statement. Coming from a Motorola Defy, in the last few months I've played extensively with Galaxy Nexus (ICS and JB, stock and custom roms), Sony Xperia Acro S (again stock and custom roms), iPhone 4s/5, and now Razr M, and while the iPhone does remain at the top of the pack, the Razr M is no worse than the GN or Xperia. Sadly, that's not saying much as I think my Defy still had a better camera.
On a side note, I'd like to point out that the lack of quality may be more software related. The GN shipped with such a bad camera that it was practically unusable. A few firmware updates later, the camera/picture quality had improved ten-fold. I'm hoping the same happens with the M...

I'm hoping so as well, since it can take excellent shots, and has some inconsistencies. The fact that there are inconsistencies with some quality mixed in lends me to believe that you're right, and hopefully so. JB should be here within the next 90 days if they meet their promise, so we'll see.

Nice video and music, definitely like the small town drive by scene. :cyclops: By the way, were there any additional edits/changes to the factory settings for the recording or was it recorded as-is with the default settings? It looked kind of dim/dark around the edges to give it sort of a tunnel view of what was being recorded.
I edited it using iMovie on my iMac.

I don't think the camera is that bad if you adjust your settings accordingly and use the tap to focus it generally focuses very quick and good I am not a photo buff or anything but I like the camera and I think it is better than my sensation and Gnex cams especially the video quality.

A favor to ask - regarding camera

Can someone PLEASE install vignette and try taking a photo with the stock camera and vignette?
I want to see if the compression and artifacting is software sourced....
I am so torn with regards to my next phone, and I have heard insanely amazing things about the One, but I am also a pretty avid mobile photographer and really appreciate a better than average camera....
Let me know if you try this and if you can, post the results?

I honestly wouldn't go with the HTC One or the GS4 if you want a great mobile camera. Where the HTC One excels in average light and low-light, it is awful outdoors, and the 4MP's aren't anything extraordinary either. The iPhone5 has a slightly better camera than the One, and the 5S should be getting released in less than a month. I honestly hate referring you to the iPhone because it sucks everywhere else against Android. The 5S should be a getting a slightly improved camera which would put it as a good bit better than the One's camera. The GS4's camera isn't better than the One, but it does do better in bright lighting/outdoors and has a better MP count.
It is possible that the HTC One Max being released soon might be getting a better "Ultrapixel" camera than our non-phablet One's. Maybe look into that? Or the iPhone5S. I can't imagine the Nexus 5 being released in a few months would have a much better camera than last years Nexus, and not to mention it likely won't be on Verizon.
Also, the Moto X's camera is god awful.

I agree with this completely. HTC got nearly everything right except for the camera. I'm hoping that the next iteration has slightly less bezel (think Moto X form factor) and a camera on par to whatever the 5S will have. If so, I'll be buying one at full price to replace this HTC One.
Ok I have taken 2 pictures, one with the stock camera and one with the Vignette camera. How would you like to see them? They're not the best pictures because it was lightly raining and I didn't want to get my phone wet so I was trying to keep the phone under the eve of my roof.

Why the doubt? There has been at least one Sony Android phones on Verizon before.
We also need to consider another factor. A camera is only as good as the photographer using it. I am by no means a professional yet in have seen great pictures and taken great pics with the HTC one that I would put up against the gs4 or the iPhone 5(I have owned all 3). The HTC one has many more options than either one of those cameras when it comes to exposure, shutter, white balance, etc. The camera editor is also great on this phone. If you use the correct scene it also helps a bunch as well.
Unless we are talking about enlarging the pic bigger than a 4x6 or 5x7 then that's where the One would fail and the GS4 or ip5 would clearly succeed. As far as posting to Facebook or instagram etc the one will be great .

Not a great morning here, cloudy/foggy, but heres a shot from both stock and vignette, respectively. Also attached a zip of the 2 since the pics would be altered due to size limits. The 'brighter' one (also taken fist, check filename) is the stock. Didn't get Vignette to focus well, and can only take 3.1M images, was on "superfine" with no filter.
For some reason Vignette can only capture up to 3.1MP on the HTC One, plus it doesn't do HDR either. I find it best to use the stock camera with HDR and then share with Vignette for the filters I want to apply. The photo comes out better than just using Vignette straight.

if i used them yeah thats what you would have to do. HTC has an odd camera and pixel count, so i'm not surprised Vignette doesn't properly support it. They've always been good about resolving issues though, so theres hope.

[Q] Worth the money?

Hello guys!
I'm thinking about buying the LG optimos G, but some people tell me very bad things about the LG brand. Well, i want to know if the phone it's good, in questions of performace, relation in price and quality and in durabillity.
It depends for how much you can get it?
In general it's a good phone. For me the only downside is camera, which pretty ****ty.
I think LG makes great devices, but their feedback sucks. It seems to be changed since G2, but OG seems forgotten. OG is great device, fast, capable, but camera is very bad. Other aspects are almost perfect, HD for 4.7 screen is perfect, image quality is gorgeous. I would say it's definitely worth money, especially in my country where i can buy it for 200-250$.
Well, I picked a refurbished one for 200$ - great value for the money.
Now it's running KitKat (PA), was surprisingly easy to install.

I saw a video and the camera seems very capable for my needs. Thank you for the feedback... I was scared because it's a low price compared to the specs.
Its low price is due to its age. The device is from late 2012 which easily beats some brands phones from late 2013 and even 2014. By the way, it's a flagship phone and is not forgotten. Kitkat is on the way for it. check my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2652276&page=8

I've owned quite a few smartphones, but have never been as pleased with any as with the OG. What I wish it did have though is FM Radio and an IR blaster, but in terms of performance, this is a beast and rightly so because it was the most powerful smartphone released in 2012.
To be honest, there is few things that really irritate me.
- one of the worst cameras I've ever seen, which should be at least average since it was LG's flagship smartphone. In addition to that lens gets scratches really easily which causes photos to be even worse.
- no 5V output through usb (which means no otg without external power)
- really bad sound recording with microphone (it's ok with normal voice, but anything louder makes distortion).
And because of those, I regret buying this device. It's true, it has nice SoC for it's price, but for me it's too much, dual core would be just enough to handle android without any problem. As for durability, it's rather more vulnerable to drops than other phones because it's got glass in the back. Mine phone doesn't look like new, although I keep it in case all the time.
The best thing about this phone? Definitely screen. Is it worth buying? In my opinion - no, I'd rather have nice camera and/or microphone than powerful SoC, but it really depends what you expect from your phone.

Well dude, i apreciate your opinnion. It helped me. And i won't buy this phone. I don't wanna buy a phone only because his cpu, ram and screen... The other things are realy bad for the opinion of the guys here. And i want a phone with a good camera (not that high quality but a quality that make a good picture) and i just want a phone with a good battery, good cpu (i want to buy a Galaxy SIV Mini, and he have a dual core 1,7 ghz krait) and i want a phone with good features and with a good compatibity for headphones(i bought a Steelseries Flux in-ear and my old sony xperia arc s didn't suport it. Now because of that i'm using a GIO because it's nice to change the rom, don't have blocks and Samsung suports almost all . So it's because i don't want Sony. The phones of sony are realy bad for their price and the system it's realy ugly. Well, thanks for the feedback, i won't buy it like i sad :highfive:
Good camera is only on Nokia devices. Can you find a pleasing device in Nokia phones? I doubt. You still don't know about camera quality after 4.4.2 update. And the eco mode which turns two cpu cores off is there in the device which is so nice. Yet again, As you wish.

It's related to your network.
I think it's wonderful despite its downsides
Hi there,
I just got this phone after some research. I was considering Sony Xperia Z, Galaxy S3 and this one. All of them within the same price range due to they are all now kind of obsolete, and despite its not-so-good camera I got the Optimus G. To be honest with you, I was going to buy a Moto G in the first place, but although I know some people who are quite happy with that, I think it's quite low range still.
To me, camera is not the main thing of a phone. Of course, I can't always take my DSLR with me, so at some point, having a phone with a decent camera is important. But I am going to use the phone mainly for Internet, apps, and so on... and I appreciate a good design as well, so having an S3 just because its camera is better?... no thanks. I've used an S3 for a little while (a couple of weeks or so) and I didn't see it as a huge step forward (but that's my impression). Lots of people have an S3, and it's not that I want to stand out, but I want to buy a phone that I like.
The camera is definitely its worst feature, but it's not that bad. It can take better pictures than previous generations, the problem is (in my view) that it's not as good as other high end devices. And technically speaking, the dreadful megapixel war, it happens on digital cameras as well. When you put a lot of pixels in a tiny sensor it sometimes creates more problems than benefit as each individual pixel may create electrical noise that will be translated into more "grain". And regarding videos, to me the most annoying thing is the micro-stuttering that sometimes happens. Maybe the bandwith needed for processing is too much for the encoder...
Anyway, so far I'm quite happy!
(BTW, there's a mod that apparently improves video/stills quality, although I couldn't install it properly on mine)
Regards
Congrats Dadivx! I also had the same choices as you did + nexus 4 + G2 16g! I chose G and I'm quite happy with it ^_^. I can't find anyone not pleased with it. Catching 4.4.2 wikk add to the pleasure for sure.

Well I buy this phone just a month ago, true the camera not so good for 13 mp. But there's camera option to choose HDR, it helps you get better picture. For me camera not most important, because I use my phone mostly for internet, Movies and games and this OG never upset me:good:
The screen also very nice for watching movie even hd video in youtube look very crisp. That my opnion about this phone, now I should go before you call me salesman:laugh:
camera...
but...what version do you have?
I have E975 (european version) with 13 mpx camera... and photo have a really good quality... way way better if compared with phone like htc one m7, glaxy s3, galaxy note 2, xperia Z, nexus 4, nexus 5, iphone (version < 5), moto x and all the other phone before 1/2 2013......
naturally last sony, nokia with 500mpx camera, s5, iphone 5 or other newest (and much expensive) phone have better camera.... but really don't think that without magnifying glass you can appreciate them....

Troll?
Sorry but people say even optimus x4 takes better pictures than our G. If it comes to camera our phone is real mistake. I know it won't have quality like normal camera, but at least in daylight it should capture some details, but it doesn't (not to mention when contrast is too big it looks awful). Photos might look good on 4,7" but not on something bigger or when you zoom in a little.
Phones you listed take the same or better pictures. Before posting stuff like this, check it earlier.

well I do agree with nobooya, the camera is the downside. even when I change the camera xml file.
If you are using this phone for everything except using the camera, this phone is really good.
but if you do taking picture most of the time, you probably can get G2,
at the end, of course if you can get this less than $200, I think it worth the money
I bought the Galaxy SIII. Thanks for answering
