[Q] After lack of Galaxy Nexus, better to get the SGSII? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So, after being a bit disappointed by the recent announcement (and 5MP camera) I think I will just sell my Nexus S and get an international SGSII. Better camera and available now, and will have ICS ROMs soon.
Anyone else feel the same way?

Nope sorry still rather have Nexus but to each their own.

not for me , as matter of fact , Pixel is NOT most important characteristic to the camera , have you seen a video that compares iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus of shutter speed?
http://v.youku.com/v_showMini/id_XMzE0MTgyNjc2_ft_6.html
look at shutter speed , Galaxy Nexus took 6 pictures while 4S just took 3 ...
shutter speed, imaging ...etc are also important
otheriwse , for exmple 15 MP with dozen seconds of shutter or 5 MP with half second of shutter, which one do you choose?
beside , i don't think human eyes can see much different between image made by 5MP or 8MP
if you really like to take picture , then why don't you buy a professional camera?

Folks, I get the megapixel race isn't the end all.
I'll probably wait on the Galaxy Nexus but I wanted to get your thoughts.
And I have a DSLR, but have trouble fitting it in my pocket. So, I want the best possible camera on a phone for when I am out and about and not wanting to lug a huge beast of a camera with me.

Nexus alllllllllllll the way. U kidding me! Lol galaxy nexus awesome. And I have the sgs2 international. Would dump it in a sec for a nexus

Have you even seen what that 5mp camera can do?!?!?! It is quite impressive! Better than the iPhone 4s 8mp that's for sure.

i love my 5mp camera on the nexus s. as i will probably enjoy the galaxy nexus 5mp camera more(when i finally invest in one).

More pixel does not equal better camera. Let's stop with this silliness.

Well, judging from the blurry grainy shots on Engadget and thisismynext.com, color me not impressed by the Galaxy Nexus' camera.
I mean, yeah, the camera has zero lag and takes turrrbo photos, but if they all look grainy/out of focus/blurry, I care not.
Just IMO, per usual internet rules.

MP count doesn't equate to image quality.
my old nikon d40 DSLR only have 6mp but of course it took much better pictures than any mobile phone cameras on the market.
the image sensor size, engine and lens/optics are what matters most.

My gf has a S2, sure its nice, but the touchwiz interface is meh... and for its size, the screen is really lacking the extra resolution of the new Nexus. Remember the S2 came out many months ago already, it's new in the USA but not really latest tech.
A great phone though, im not trying to give it a bad rep, just saying new Nexus really is the new tech.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

for example
nexus one camera and nexus s camera have same MP count.
but nexus s camera output is much better than nexus one's.
i have both phones so i know how frustrated i am with nexus one's camera.

So how does everyone defend the poor sample photos from the Galaxy.
Serious question....

Engadget and this is my next are very iPhone centric fanboy sites. I'm waiting for tests done by someone that knows what they are doing and not trying to make it look bad. Not saying that was done here but apparently Engadget screwed up pictures from the Nokia phone twice. Once in comparison with the iPhone 4 and then most recently with the iPhone 4s test. Given that, someone there doesn't know how to use a phone that isn't Apple made. Take those photos with a grain of salt.

But its impossible for me to take 20 crappy photos from my wife's iPhone 4S or my buddies SGSII.
Not trolling. Its the truth.

I went from Nexus S to the Galaxy SII and I wish I could go back. Sure, it has a better screen and camera but the software is buggy and bloated. I tried to put on cyanogen but that one still has a lot of bugs as well. My Nexus S was rock solid.
I will definitely be trading in my SII for the new Nexus.

I am not a camera person myself and I really don't a **** about them to be honest. They have reached the point where they are acceptable to me on a smartphone.
Now that that's out of the way. On to engaget and basically all the other mobile sites. They all suck and are complelely useless in everything they cover. Apple/android/windows it don't matter really. They are just flat out terrible. The camera may be ****. It may be really good. But ihmo to come to a conclusion based on those idiots is foolish.
If you want a real rundown of a device wait for anandech to cover it.

I LOL @ people that don't choose a phone because it only has a 5MP camera compared to 8MP on other phones.

I don't take crappy photos with my Nexus S.
Anyways if I want to actually take high quality pictures, I'll use my Nikon. It's a phone, not a DSLR camera.

no, but it means more cropping options. probably also better photoshopping options.
the only thing worse then people thinking mpx is everything is people screaming they're nothing. i'd kill for another 6 on my 12mpx Nikon just for cropping. much cheaper then a tele lens i generally don't need and can't afford even if i needed it.
ontopic - i like official updates, so Nexus beats Galaxy S any day. Size and price will be key, camera is irrelevant.

Camera quality sucks compared to iphone

I travel and use my phone to scan documents, and my camera is suppose to be better than the iphones, it sucks, there is no way I get as good an image as my friends iphone does, whats the problem?
Actually closer to useless as a scanner.

Ps.- bashing the phone in the section its in probably isn't a good idea. Most ppl here like their phone and calling it useless might make them less inclined to help you

bashing the camera yes, not the phone, yes I am rooted running stock rom, I have not messed much with the settings, have you tried taking a picture of a document and see how good of a scan you get?
I will look at the setting, but I have my doubts that I will ever get as good an image as the iphone.
Seriously HTC get it together, I should not have to carry an additional scanner.

You should mess with the settings or you're just not getting a good picture.
What app are you using? or are you just taking pictures and uploading them?
I have both the iphone 3GS and my Inc 2. I also have access to an iphone 4 and 4S and I have to say that the inc 2 camera is on par with the 4S camera which is supposed to have the best optics out of all the iphones.
I can post up results too if you like? Are you sure your lens isn't smudged? or possibly defective?
IPhone 4s and dinc2 both have 8mp cameras bro. Adjust your settings I know that when I was running stock 8mp wasn't the default

So your saying I got screwed on my brand new phone.
I am not using any program just taking a picture, after all that's what my buddy does with his phone.
Maybe I will go by the Verizon store and see if the phone they have does better than mine.
My buddy had the iphone 4, and now has the 4S, and I have to say the document picture taken with the Dinc is no good at all.
I will post pics.

I have not compared the quality of pictures, just images of documents, if I am trying to focus binoculars, of cameras, I focus on trying to read something, but in this case I need the documents to mail them in PDF format after printing them.
I'd have to agree that the iphone 4s does have better picture quality. It is newer hardware after all. The dinc2 camera works perfectly for me though. You have to remember it's a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone.

To be honest you're never going to get the quality of a scanner from your phone, and indoor lighting is generally terrible as shown here.
I'll take a pic using the iphone 4S tonight and post it. I'm going to redo all 3 that way we can have a test with similar variables.

I see the difference in the 3GS, better than the Dinc also.
I tried some scanner software but the quality was the same as a regular picture.

I think you need to adjust your metering in settings. I'm able to do that on cm7 not sure if its an option with the stock camera app, but the consensus is that the sense camera is better than the aosp camera. When metering mode is changed from center weighted to frame average on cm7 i get no focal spot blur like i do in a shot with center weight metering.
Maybe someone with a sense camera can chime in on what metering options are available with it but changing that might help your focal blur on documents
Center weighted. Text blur near top

[Q]Should I upgrade or wait?

Hey guys. I bring greetings from the vibrant forums. I was wanting some opinions from s2 owners. Currently I have a vibrant and I'm very familiar with some of the devs here. I have an upgrade available to me. My question is, is this phone worth an upgrade.? Of course I'd root and install a new rom. So with the new rooms, how's the overall performance of the phone? Smoothness and speed? I'm not that worried about benchmark scores. Or would you guys suggest holding off til next year and wait for the next big thing? Thanks.
It's dual 1.5Ghz, what do you think it'll feel like? A droid Eris?
Upgrade, because there's always going to be something new and you'll just post this question 6 months from now

Galaxy S II vs Galaxy S (Vibrant)
4.52 inch screen vs 4 inch
Super Amoled + vs Super Amoled
1.5ghz dual core vs 1ghz single
8mp camera vs 5 MP (no flash)
1080p video recording vs 720p
2mp front camera vs ............
4g data speeds vs 3g speeds
NFC vs .............
1850 mah battery vs 1500 (I think)
Dual mic vs single (I think)
Louder speaker vs loud speaker
Excellent GPS vs ...........
The Galaxy S II is definitely worth the upgrade over the Vibrant. The only part where the Vibrant shine is that it has excellent development compared to the GSII and that is mainly because the GSII is a newer device.
I've owned 2 Vibrants in the past and I can honestly say that after owning the GSII I do not miss the Vibrant not even for a second although it was a great phone at the time minus the GPS issues and lack of a camera flash.

*chuckle* ask a question in this forum and your ensured to get at least one honest answer and at least one smart assed answer.
I also came from the Vibrant and within minutes of using the SGSII felt that it is the phone that Samnsung should have made the Vibrant be. The SGSII is much snappier, the GPS works reliably and the screen is just enough bigger that I don't mind using it to do some light web surfing.
Am sure there are some issues (there's a long thread on how bad the screen sucks but I really don't find that issue very noticeable on mine) and there is Samsung/TMobile's history of not being very quick to release updates (we're still waiting on the WiFi calling app which I believe was promised to be available at launch).
Bottom line - it's a hell of a phone and, imho, the best one available on TMobile. The only other phone I might choose over it is the Galaxy Nexus and I'm not going to jump ship to get one...
...whew. Now, go forth and by an SGSII, use it and if you like it, keep it. If not then take it back in the first 14 days and exchange it for something else

I think that was the joke they were making. Although I hate how that is always peoples' response. It's a legitimate question if you haven't been keeping up on what else is about to come out. Not that people knew it was going to happen, but a lot of us were upset when the SGS4g came out right after the Vibrant, when it was announced if someone asked if they should get the phone I think most would agree to hold off.
However in this case I doubt we will see a SGS3 for close to a year since it hasn't been released over seas yet and then we get to wait another 6 months before they finally grace us with it. I am currently trying to talk myself out of waiting or ordering the GN from over seas.
Best Buy has it on sale for $149.99 no rebate!!!!
Very happy with this phone. i previously had a Samsung admire from metropcs which turned out to be totally inadequate .
The admire ran stock gingerbread with no touchwiz which was really its only nice feature. personally, i don't see why everyone complains about touchwiz.. There's no way it slows down the phone to a greater extent than HTC sense with all its bloated animations, and it does have a few useful tweaks.
Id suggest purchasing an sgs2.

Camera showdown GN vs S II [Android Central]

People love to compare the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S II, especially the camera, so I thought I'd share this link with you all. It does a fairly good job of comparing the two cameras. Not surprisingly, the S II camera comes out on top.
Android camera showdown: Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Samsung Galaxy S II
I was surprised at the outcome of the panorama as I thought that was one of the best things about the Galaxy Nexus and I love that feature, I've never seen any problems with "stitching" as in this comparison. I don't think panorama mode is a gimmick either but maybe it's just me.
The outcome was no surprise. Samsung put together an expensive phone and dropped the ball on some critical hardware. Unfortunate, but true.
If i'm not mistaken, having a ****ty loudspeaker and camera is a Google requirement to make a NEXUS phone.
If you don't like it why waist your time on it, buy another phone... Nexus may not be the best camera phone, but it's not bad either.... for what I'm using the camera for the pictures from Nexus most are better than my old SGS2 (my sisters boyfriend got it now) today we both took pictures of their new born baby boy, and Nexus took the best pictures in sharpness, color and most natural look
Speaker is not so loud but still better than my old Lumia 800 and HTC XL
I'm gonna get the gs3 when it comes out all the goodies of the nexus but better hardware, its just a device.

From T989 to Galaxy Nexus

Hello, i'm thinking of selling my T989(T-mobile's GS2) and getting the galaxy nexus for $400 unlocked. I wonder if the speaker quality is that bad that it will annoy me, and is the camera good enough? Also for people who bought it from the play store, could you order a white one?

I jumped ship from the t989 as well. Do it, it's fantastic. Speaker quality is fine, it shouldn't annoy you as nothing is wrong with it. & yes the camera is good enough. Gnex is a great device.

I'm in the same situation as you, except slightly different . I bought a galaxy nexus and I still have my t989 and I'm debating whether to sell the t989 or not. My assessment is that the camera us a mixed bag, sometimes it takes shots that are almost as good as the t989, not as good, but close enough for it not to be that big an issue. But facts are facts and 8 MP images with the GS2 sensor more often than not have better detail than the 5MP shots on the nexus. Also Nexus needs optimal lighting most of the time... no surprise since it has an f2.8 sensor and the gs2 has an f2.65. Though in the end, numbers are useless since the gs2 kicked the iPhone 4s's butt most of the time (not always), and that had a f2.2 sensor? So... there's a camera comparison article on zdnet which shows nexus vs lumia vs 4s. Its worth a look.
I as always have concerns about the GPU. When running Nenamark2 it performs at less than half the frame rate of the adreno 220 in the t989. Not surprising since its the same gpu as the iPhone 3gs just over locked. Its confusing since it normally performs so well that I'm concerned whether it will be able to hold up to more demanding games.

Have you done any testing on the radio/network stacks? I'm reading on some forums that the T989 doesn't have proper radios for ATT MVNOs nor for worldwide support.
I just bought the T989 ($300, running 4.0.4), but could still return it for a Galaxy Nexus ($350)..

Hello, i'm thinking of selling my T989(T-mobile's GS2) and getting the galaxy nexus for $400 unlocked. I wonder if the speaker quality is that bad that it will annoy me, and is the camera good enough? Also for people who bought it from the play store, could you order a white one?

I came from a T989 too. The nexus kicks that phone's ass in my opinion. $350 on the play store and no there is no white. The speaker quality is great. The camera is really great for 5mp. I expected it to be much worse. You will get slower "4G" though cuz I think the nexus operates on the 21mbps hspa and the T989 uses 42mbps. I still get about 10mbps download and 4mbps upload on my nexus, not bad.. Assuming you are using T-Mobile

Nexus devices for life. Won't be switching from a Nexus to non-Nexus device ever.

Could you be a little more specific? Trying to change my mind about keeping the T989 w 4.0.4 preinstalled....

This phone - galaxy nexus

I'm looking into getting this phone with VERIZON and just wanted to read some inputs of what you guys & girls think of your Galaxy Nexus 4G?
I'm currently rocking a HTC Evo 4G with Sprint but no 4G due to location (Miami) and I have 4 more days to decide if I should stay with Sprint or go to Verizon due to lack of Internet Services.
So yea, I'm a big fan of GREAT Camera phones. I see the Nexus only have a 5MP sensor. Does it compare or beats the iPhone 4S camera?
But I'm really digging Jelly Bean!
So let me know what ya think?
Should I rock the Galaxy Nexus if I leave Sprint..

It doesn't matter about the megapixel its all about the Lens and the glasses I mean the camera Hardware itself

That's why I said "Sensor" 5MP Sensor could perform better then other 8MP Sensor.
It can all depends on the (Aperture) of the "Glass"
So if the Sensor kicks low performance, the GLASS can make it pop. But not the other way around.
Thanks
The GNex camera is fine, everyone complains about it but unless you're trying to be a camera pro, its just fine.

I left sprint for Verizon just a couple of months ago. Left because of the same reason, my part of Ohio won't have 4g for an unforeseen amount if time. Couldn't be happier now though. the difference between my service is amazing. 3g and 4g is like night and day. Bottom line is I get better data speeds on 3g with Verizon then I ever did on sprints 3g. Unlimited data is great if you can use it, but I couldn't use Pandora, play music, or even watch a 3 min. YouTube video on sprints network with where I am, and there current levels of service.

That's good to know about the service & camera! Thanks...Any good or bad issues with the Galaxy Nexus?
May want to research battery life and screen issues.
Although battery life is very subjective, overall it seems as though people are having issues with it. There are extended batteries that can help with this issue so I would look into that as well.
There are problems with the Nexus screen ranging from banding to yellowish tints. Some people have exchanged phones multiple times and still have had screen issues, so this is one aspect I would definitely research thoroughly before buying.
I just ordered the phone so I can't comment on that, but as for service it seems anything is better than Sprint for data speed. I'm running far away from Sprint (and contracts in general). If I were to sign a contract I'd prob get the GS3... not sure if VZW has it.

Yea my family was in the same boat, and i had the epic 4g slider, the other sprint flagship phone . Speeds are great and i think you EVO is long over due for an upgrade plus, no annoying bootloader during root, ( I rooted my moms Evo)

Had pretty much the same scenario. 2 Evo 4G and ridiculous coverage. We both switched over to Verizon and a GNex. I wouldn't hesitate to call it an upgrade in every way. The camera has a lower mega pixel, but it takes better pictures, especially in low light conditions. The battery life is better in the overall, but that may be related to better signal strength. Nicer display on the Nexus and it's definitely snappier. Verizon LTE is leaps and bounds beyond Sprint's 3G coverage. I would definitely give the Nexus a shot.

Hey, thanks for the info...Do you know of a link that I can see the differences between the two. Galaxy Nexus & Evo 4G?
How much snappier can it be from the EVO. This Evo is pretty bad azz when it comes to performance and picture quality.
I would love to see the difference in photo quality & performance!
HTC Evo 4G has a lens aperture of 2.2.
I wonder what the Galaxy Nexus has?
They both run 1.2 dual-core processors with 1gb of ram?

something about the camera since you asked how it compared to the iphone 4/s camera.
at dave n busters i could take pictures with the flash off and they were fine, and with the flash they weren't washed out or blurry.
the iphone needed the flash otherwise it was all dark, and almost all the photos were blurry or washed in flash.
and then that fast shutter speed on the nexus, i can snap a quick shot faster than the iphone (multiple shots in a row, and a few other things are when this is most useful)
I used an iPhone 4 before I moved to a Gnex. And, I still kind of prefer the image quality from my iPhone 4.
To me, it just seems as though the Gnex isn't quite able to capture all of the detail; its just slightly a bit more blurry. This is when you zoom in in your picture (i.e. after I've taken the picture).
The camera lens was changed with the iPhone 4S so I would think there's an improvement even over the iPhone 4.
That said, the picture quality from a Gnex isn't terrible but it could be a lot better. Hopefully, it's something that's changed with the next gen.

Thanks for the replies! The reason I asked compared to the iPhones is because in fact I came from the iPhone family and know the quality of both the iPhone 4 and 4S. My girl currently owns the 4S. I have done the comparison between my current phone HTC EVO 4G LTE. There is no dought that the EVO 4G LTE takes the leap over the iPhone's.
I wanted the input of the Galaxy Nexus 4G cause I don't know how it stacked up next to the iPhones. I had a feeling one of you was going to say that the details on the iPhone 4 pictures is just peppier more then the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE .
And knowing this makes me assure that it will not be as crispy as the iPhone 4S.
But yea thanks for the input on the camera of the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE.
If the question is specifically about comparing cameras, the 4S has a better camera than my GNex, but my GNex takes pretty good pics. It may not be stellar but it's good enough for my purposes.

Cool, Thanks! The moral of my question is how does the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE stacks up to the Evo 4G LTE in general? Would it be worth to "downgrade" sorta say?
