[Q] T-Mobile SIM in Orange-branded phone, how do I get a mobile internet signal? - Desire General

Hi,
I've got the network operator set to T-Mobile (as opposed to T-Mobile Orange which didn't give me a signal on my old G2/Hero either) and the network mode is set to GSM/WCDMA auto. The software on the phone is an Orange-branded version of Android 2.2, do I need to install a T-Mobile version like my previous phone had or if I can fix the issue without having to do that?
Thanks in advance.

As long as the SIM is able to make and recieve calls then you can edit the APN settings to the following (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > APNS > menu > New APN)
APN general.t-mobile.uk
Username user
Password tm
MCC 234
MNC 30
Auth PAP
APN Type default

Thank you so much, that was much simpler than I had expected!

3G Won't Re-enable (Orange UK Desire)

Hi, I am after a bit of help here after potentially messing up one of my Wife's friends new Desire.
It is on the the Orange UK Network and is their own branded version of the phone.
Because she was saying that the battery life was not very good, I installed 'apndroid' so that she could easily turn the 3G connection on and off and (hopefully!) preserve the battery life a bit more.
apndroid installed fine and turned the 3G off - however when I clicked the widget icon again, it wouldn't switch back on. I uninstalled apndroid and re-booted the phone but still no joy.
I have checked that 'Mobile Network' is enabled in settings and the 'Network Mode' is set to GSM/WCDMA auto.
Does anyone have any hints/tips/tweaks that might re-enable the 3G please? I can't figure out why this has happened. The settings look exactly the same as I have them on my HTC Tattoo and that works fine.
Any help you can give would be hugely appreciated! (And might get me out of the dog house!).
Check the apn settings. APNDroid changes them from the correct ones to switch off 3G so it should be a simple matter of removing whatever apndroid puts there.
Thanks for the quick reply - I did uninstall APNDroid in case that was what was causing the problem, so hopefully it would have reset itself to what it was originally.
Anyway, I'll get her to check.
If that isn't the problem would it be worth doing a 'hard reset'? She hasn't had the phone that long so she wouldn't lose much.
Thanks again for the help.
3G on Orange
You could try resetting the APN to default:
[Menu] > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > [Menu] > Reset to default
It may be too late for such a simple sort, but it might be worth trying.

APNDroid disabled your APN by adding a suffix of "apndroid" to your APN. If you uninstall APNDroid without reenabling your APN, it will remain disabled.

Dave
Guys, many, many thanks for all your replies - excellent help and suggestions - better than any 'Helpdesk'!!
The Wife will be contacting her friend tomorrow to pass on your suggestions - hopefully this will fix the problem.
Many thanks once again.
Guys,
Just thought I'd let you know we have fixed the problem - it was indeed the APNDroid 'tweak' still showing as enabled on the APN settings. To fix this I just created a new APN using the settings obtained from another Orange branded Desire, and hey presto, all working again!
Just in case they may be useful to someone else, these are the default APN settings for an Orange branded HTC Desire:-
Name
Orange Internet
APN
orangeinternet
'Proxy' through to 'MMS Port'
<not set>
MMS protocol
WAP 2.0
MCC
234
MNC
33
Authentication type
CHAP
APN type
default
Cheers!

[Q] Seems like my 3G isn't working

I bought this phone brand new, everything was wrapped in its cellophane. I asked the seller if this was in fact a 3G phone to use in Europe because I needed the UMTS 2100. The box itself writes " HSPA/WCDMA 900/2100 " Greece runs on UMTS 2100....When I try to use the internet search engine it says "There is no Network connection right now". I check my Mobile Network settings and Data Roaming is checkmarked. Network mode has GSM/WCDMA set to auto. Network Operators states Greece Cosmote.
What haven't I checked to make the connection?
I do believe this is Euro/Asia version because it has like 7 different English languages for Asia (Singapore/Malaysia/Vietnam etc...) When I changed the Bluetooth name, the default was HTC Vision (which is the UK name of this product)
Check in settings/wireless&networks/mobile networks/ and make sure that "Use only 2g networks" is not checked.
I don't have that option.
In the Mobile Network Settings screen I have
Data Roaming (Checked)
Data Roaming Sound (checked)
Access Point Names
Network Mode (GSM / WCDMA (Auto)
Network Operators (GR Cosmote)
Enable Always-on Mobile Data (checked)

Are you saying that you only have a 2G/EDGE connection or that you have no data connection at all? From the thread title, I thought the former, but from what you are describing, it sounds like the latter. If it is the case that you have no data connection whatsoever, check to make sure your APN settings are correct for your network provider.
Where do I go to check the APN setting....I found an APN screen but it is completely blank....How can I add parameters to that screen?

No APN = No Data, I would try googling the Greece Cosmote APN data settings first.
UPDATE: I tried to google the APN settings for you but "ITS ALL GREEK TO ME".....lol J/K, but not.

Okay....I am getting the hang of the Android OS now...sorry...I am a migrant from Win 6.5...
I got the info from a website for the service provider....it seems it wants an IP address to be inputted where it says DNS...the problem is I don't see a place that says DNS....does that go under the "Server" area?
Try here maybe:
http://www.prosoxi.com/2010/02/17/greek-apn-settings-cosmote-vodafone-wind/
EDIT: woops think this is what you just said no DNS right, What about "proxy" do you have that? Try it in the proxy field.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Got it so far....for the proxy there are two listed....."Proxy" and "MMS Proxy" which one does the IP address go under?

Are you asking if you should put DNS under the proxy or mms proxy fields? No, these are different things. Have you tried inputting all of the other settings except for DNS and seeing if it worked? Most carriers will work without you setting the DNS (it's pulled in by your phone dynamically).
In most cases, you need to put nothing more than the APN (and username/password if required). For MMS to work, you'll also need to find your carrier's MMSC, MMS proxy, and MMS port.
it seems like I finally got it to work. I had to switch a few parameters around...Had to call the phone company. I love this phone. I wanted the physical keyboard but the on screen landscape keyboard is proving to be just as effective.
Thanks to everyone who helped

Ive been having the same problem the last two weeks and no one seems to be able to help me out. The best advice I can give is to change your APN to the lte one and its supposed to work from there, people usually have the most success doing that. But it didnt help me so any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Last time I had that issue, I created a new ATT APN and changed to it. After a reboot, the phone changed from CDMA to the LTE preferred mode.
I can't tell you if that stuck though, because I flashed another ROM the next day and never saw the issue again.
Here are some APN's you can use. I used the last one:
Name: ATT PTA
APN: pta
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80

This is my exact problem, I have hyperdrive which I love, but I have no LTE. I am having the same problem as OP and I have not been able to find a solution. Any help would be great!
Believe it or not, I somehow found a way to fix it for me. Now Ive literally tried everything I could find on the topic and nothing seemed to work. Kind of on a whim I decided to go to Network Operators in the settings and selected ATT, after that for some reason I was able to pick LTE/GSM/WCDMA. I disabled data, dialed *#*#4363#*#* and changed it to LTE/GSM/WCDMA and then made sure I had the right APN selected and re-enabled data, and next thing I knew 4G popped up! I hope this helps someone. I was infuriated for a few weeks without 4G and the fix was much simpler than what everyone kept telling me to do.

I'm having this issue in that I am only able to select the following two options, and have them stick;
GSM/WCDMA auto
GSM/WCDMA preferred (this option is currently selected).
If I try to select "LTE/GSM/WCDMA", it immediately goes back to GSM/WCDMA preferred.
I'm currently using StraightTalk on the AT&T network. I know the sim I have in the phone probably won't allow access to the LTE network (I want to get new sim cards to get LTE through StraightTalk), but I should be able to at least select that network option, and the LTE radio would scan, and find nothing.
I'm on the 9/13 nightly, stock kernel.

You will need a new sim and it will allow you to select it. They will overnight it to you for free for 7 bucks on the website.

^^ That didn't work for me.
I previously had an Axon 7 that got stolen. I ordered another one on Swappa and can't for the life of me get it to connect to LTE on AT&T in Southern California (Los Angeles area) when my first one had no issues at all. I wonder if the sim card they gave me isn't an LTE card. It's really frustrating.

Theres an app called 4G Only Network Mode on the playstore that allows you to access more in depth settings of your device, then you can manually lock the phone into LTE mode or whatever mode you prefer.

Elephone P8000 and data using Vodafone UK & Talkmobile UK

Can't seem to get my mobile data on my two sims, one with Vodafone and the other with Talkmobile. Has anyone got theirs to work?
You have to toggle data on under settings>Data usage> you will see the tabs for each sim there so select which one you require.
Solved it!
Get the APN settings online.
Only thing you need to change is the Authentication type to "None" rather than "Not Set".
Also don't forget to turn your mobile data on!
Strange that, both my apn's are on "not set" and data works for me - this is with a 3UK and Vodafone prepay sim
I'm on TalkTalk, another company by vodafone
HI I've got a TalkTalk sim, I had a talkmobile sim about a year ago and they're both a sub brand of Vodafone. All you need to do to get data on your phone is to manually enter the APN settings. I had to copy each detail one by one of my mums APN settingsto my phone(she's also on talktalk). What you need to do is
Go to Settings > More (wireless & networks) > Mobile networks > Access point names > tap the add button on the top right and enter the following details one by one and when done just tap option button then save and select the new APN.
Unfortunately I can't send any details because the APN includes a link and I cant make posts with any links.
Just type your network followed by apn settings android on google, geeksquad is reliable

Hi..
I bought an unlocked HTC 10 from HTC a few months ago. My carrier is TMOUS. I have read a few places around XDA and Reddit that the HTC SIM-unlocked phones on TMOUS experience erratic signal strength and/or coverage for voice, data, MMS, etc. at times.
ThinKing I might investigate this by looking at the APN settings, I checked my phone to examine the the specifics of my APN configuration, and I noticed several items that were missing from most of the "2016 TMO APN Settings" found around the web. Specifically, the settings under MMSC and APN Type seemed to be incomplete or incorrect.
After changing some settings of the APN settings above, and also going into "#*#*4636*#*#" under "Phone Information" and changing more, I lost all data and voice for a few minutes. I simply rebooted to get those original settings back, butreboot and get things back but now I would really like to know what the settings those T-Mobile customers who purchased their HTC 10s from TMO before they abandoned their sale of them. I also would be interested in anyone suggestions on how I might keep new settings if a reboot just restores the original settings.
Specifically (as far as settings) I am curious as to the settings they have for their main APN, and also what is set for "Set Preferred Network Type" under the menu/settings when "#*#*4636*#*#" is typed and you go into "phone information". The correct setting is a list of protocols. I have checked around the web and cannot seem to select the right list of protocols on this phone, so I am really puzzled as to the right setting.
Ant help would be appreciated...!

download the tmobile app. in the app, you can run some diagnostics and one of the tests will tell you if your APN info needs an update and you can update it from there. its all very easy, just download the app and run the tests.

However, what's really strange is that I don't have an option for "APN Protocol" nor "APN Roaming Protocol"...so i can't specify the IP protocol.
I was hoping to enter IP protocol because I read that T-Mobile now has IPv6 up and running.... soooo if you change "APN Protocol" to IPv6, you should experience a better signal as IPv6 is probably only being used as overflow right now.
Try it (if you want) and let me know if you experience any difference.
EDIT: One more question..under Settings-> Mobile Data -> Preferred Network"?
I have two choices: Global or GSM/WCDMA/LTE. Right now I have global selected, but don't know which one is correct. What is yours set to?

download the tmobile app. in the app, you can run some diagnostics and one of the tests will tell you if your APN info needs an update and you can update it from there. its all very easy, just download the app and run the tests.

Which T-Mobile app? There are like 5 of them.
I installed the one just called T-Mobile and it said "T-Mobile is hitting some rough waters and isn't available right now", so it may not like the fact that I am rooted, S-off, etc. But I'm not sure....

Make sure to choose GSM/WCDMA/LTE, Global would be for international usage.

Thanks, syntropic

Just convert it to T-Mobile then flash a custom rom with with carrier options in aroma installer. Choose T-Mobile and your good to go.
One thing you must do first is s-off via sunshine.

I'm s-off already, so I'm good to go...But what do you mean convert to T-Mobile? When I got this phone and put my T-mobile SIM card in, and started it for the first time, it pre-selected T-Mobile network and took a few minutes to configure (and presumably the correct bands and frequencies) automatically.
When I go into "Select Network operator" only T-Mobile and AT&T are working choices...and T-Mobile has a start next to it likely indicating it's the proper network for this phone.
So I think it's already a "T-Mobile" phone.

change cid to T-Mobile cid and flash ruu. Then you will have T-Mobile radio. When Android N comes it should be fixed on us unlocked versions. I have 2 10s and ones on T-Mobile and other us unlocked and on us unlocked band 12 is unstable where I'm at so I get all the problems you described.

Thank you... Do you think it would be possible to just change the CID and create a SDcard zip file with TMO firmware. In the past (with my HTC M8) I have extracted the components from a stock ROM.zip (which I got from an RUU) and created a firmware zip which simply updated my firmware and didn't wipe internal storage flash stock recovery, etc, etc....
I guess my question is...provided I create the bootable external SD firmware.zip correctly and also change the CID, is this a feasible plan?

yes it may be possible but I'm pretty sure data is going to need to be wiped. When I used the firmware zip method to convert to T-Mobile my data wouldn't work without doing the ruu first then waiting till it booted fully first. Then proceeded to install twrp and custom rom. So if you end up with data problems then you must ruu.
I have the latest ruu for T-Mobile I just haven't uploaded it yet. If you need it let me know.

Uploading the latest RUU would be amazingly helpful!!
One of the reasons I am hesitant to RUU this phone is because I'm on the HTC build 1.96.617.2 (and an OTA waiting if I want to install it manually), but the TMO RUU I found in this forum is 1.80.xxx...which I believe is from last June. I didn't really want to go back to that older build...
EDIT: I was going to change my CID, but just realized I have no idea what the T-Mobile CID or MID actually are. Could you possibly do a "getvar all" (or if you already know it). I searched around for it but only found HTC CIDs and obviously SuperCID.
