Google abandons CDMA (for developer devices) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

From techeye:
http://news.techeye.net/mobile/google-abandons-cdma?
CDMA is marked "archived, for reference only"
http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html
I guess that finally nails the Verizon Galaxy Nexus as a carrier-phone. Next time buy a truly free & open device (i.e. GSM)
Seriously though. This Galaxy Nexus launch and follow-up has to be the messiest thing I've ever since Google set its foot into. From launch, to providing international release-dates, to US promotion, to handling updates, to releasing buggy updates, to pulling them, to general PR.
It's all been a big ****ing mess.
Is this the sign of the start of the end of the Nexus program or what? Or is leaving closed CDMA networks and carriers behind actually a sign of a new, better start?
Discuss.

Welcome to last week.

Edit: Rootzwiki seems to have something more to offer than the techeye article.
http://rootzwiki.com/_/articles/ann...dma-galaxy-nexus-will-continue-to-update-r374
Still not crystal clear, and definitely falls under my definition of messy PR.
The rootzwiki even has an update, because Google has messed up its correcting response and needs to correct itself, again.

Yeah this is old news. Plus the 4.0.4 update is out for the VZW. What's it like beating a dead horse lol?

Funny thing is how the 'abandoned' device is getting more frequent updates than e officially supported device. We still don't have 4.0.3 officially yet (the last relapse is officially the Nexus S one), and 4.0.4 is CDMA only.
Welcome to last week, BTW.

Omg. Not only does it keep being reposted but by people who don't even understand what's going on and say things like " next time buy a truly free and open device".

Hm. Should have searched the forum better it seems. I didn't find it before posting. Anyway. The conclusion from that thread still seems to be incredibly messy.
Can anyone tell WTH it now does mean to be a "Nexus" device? Ever since the release of the Galaxy Nexus and its "evil" CDMA counter-pair, that definition seems to have been in a flux.

Thanks. But even skimming the forums several times during the weekend this one never entered the FP of General while I was reading it.
How does it feel? At least we have source access which we can use to build a working phone image, running 4.0.3. Which is more than you can say about the 4.0.4 release.
So yeah, feels good, open and free

If my understanding is correct, you need to build 4.0.3 with the proprietary files (binaries) contained in a working cdma build of the device (what Google has called "apks"). Since those files are closed source, they cannot be included in AOSP.
Why those cdma files are closed source is a mystery. It could be for legal reasons or it could be because of the way cdma networks communicate with devices (requiring them to have a signature from the carrier embedded in them).
Sent via Galaxy Nexus

The proprietaries are all closed source. GSM included. Looks like Google couldn't obtain a license to distribute is the whole problem. Hence they also axed the factory images, because it was a form of redistribution of them as well.

And cmda (and I guess the proprietary software) is owned by a working group of several different telecom companies.

At first I was trying to get some news out. And discussion about Google's general handling of the Nexus-line this time around and how it hasn't exactly been "optimal".
But I guess that got lost in everyone picking up on the snide remark rather than the rest of the comment.

There is no source release of 4.0.4 yet but I have been on 4.0.3 since the day I got my phone.
How does it feel? It feels great to have 32GB of space on my phone and get an average 20Mbps downstream. (At times reaching 40Mbps+)

This isn't old news at all and it is a big deal. A lot of people got screwed here by both Google and Verizon. Not having official AOSP support for developer nexus phone is unacceptable. If there were code distribution issues, then Google should have worked that out way before the official launch. I'm still holding out hope that this will be resolved, but at this point i'd settle for just getting out of my contract and moving over to the GSM variant.
On a related note, I wish CDMA would just fade away into a bad memory.

You sir are retarded. Steve (Cyanogen), personally has our device and promised we would get CM9. Additionally the newer Galaxy line will be some of the 1st devices to get updated ICS as confirmed by Samsung on their website & every tech hideout on the frigging web.
Let's leave the smart phones to smart people ok ?
A number of people (myself included) "donated" (it's not really a donation when you're asked to do it in exchange for something) to Cyanogen for the purpose of having their ROM on our phones. It would be common courtesy for them to at least provide a progress update every now and then. But apparently on this forum where arrogance rules asking for a timeline is a deadly sin.
You guys are so self-righteous it's disturbing. Yes, I donated $20 to Cyanogen and I would like to know when the ROM we were promised will come to fruition.
How is this any different than Bubby taking everyones money and never doing anything with the phone?

Galaxy Nexus - AT&T

https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=galaxy_nexus_hspa
I know there's GSM support for it. I'm unfamiliar with AOSP devices. Will there be, or is there good developer support for the device when used with AT&T? I'm coming from a SGS 2 SkyRocket.
If you're not using the GSM version on AT&T there's probably no reason for you to be a troll.
Have you seriously not read a thread or news article in the last 24 hours?
That's not an AT&T Galaxy Nexus. Its an unlocked i9250 GSM model. Works on AT&T, T-Mobile, or any GSM carrier in the US/World. Its the same (save for pre-installed Google Wallet) as the European model that's been sold for the last 5+ months.

Per your suggestion I've looked through the last 5 pages and there's a couple that's semi similar to mine. The official announcement: which I could try to start a conversation there and it get lost in the general chatter about it, and another question like mine but about the battery. I'm Never used an AOSP device, or an international device. Before I bought it I thought I would come over kick up a conversation with some people that have a GN and ask some questions. General stuff about development on it. Is there a difference between this one and the international version.
The way you people responded to someone that has never been in this specific device's forum, or messed with any variant of the device before is not right.

Thank you!! I'll talk to you.
Thinking about buying it. Never used or paid much attention to AOSP devices because AT&T doesn't sell them. Are there any catches coming from Non-AOSP devices? I wasn't sure if there's any catches to using the international GSM roms with AT&T. Completely clueless here. I don't necessarily have time to read every post for 10 pages. Looking for a general overview of my questions.
You asked a really obvious question which is why people are responding to you the way they are. The question also doesn't make much sense since it is hard to believe that you this little about this phone. I think you are asking if the Galaxy Nexus works well with AT&T. The answer is yes. It also works well with any GSM network provider. There is good development for this phone, and nothing has to be or will be unique to AT&T.
There's no catches to using this phone with AT&T. Everything works great. Well actually, there are a few catches, I wouldn't get this phone if you were hoping to have:
1. Delayed software updates, or no updates at all
2. Terrible superimposed user interface that is more buggy
3. Lots of bloatware like AT&T Navigator just in case you wanted to pay AT&T for something Google gives for free and does a better job at.
If you are looking for any of those, then yeah, that's the only catch.
Why would I every look into a phone that I can't use? It has nice specs. I can't use it. Close. What's obvious to you isn't so obvious to someone else. Maybe it's all exactly the same as what I'm used to, or maybe there's some stuff you you "just know from experience" that I wouldn't know.
I read your post twice and I have no idea what you were trying to say.

Maybe a better question is: "Do the GSM ROMS work correctly on AT&T without any catches? If there is a catch are the developer pretty quick to help fix, or do the developers ignore AT&T"
I know this is not a primary AT&T device so I know the support is going to be back burner. I just want to know how back burner it is.

This is what I'm saying. You have a very very weak understanding of how this works. Do you really think that there are specific ROMs and tweaks for all of the dozens of carriers people are using this device on? Its an unlocked GSM device. There's no special software needed. You put in your SIM card.
Developers suppor the device. Not the network.

Google does provide better support for the Galaxy Nexus than any other device. Can you name me a device that Google provides better support for? If the OP is asking here on a dev site, he should expect to get a dev answer, like "flash it yourself".
What you are talking about is non-yakju builds that are NOT supported by Google - they are supported by Samsung. So, if you want to get your updates once they have gone through two bureaucracies (Samsung and Google) and double the time, then stay on a non-yakju build, If you want to get them once gone through only one (Google), then flash yakju or takju, and you will get them much sooner.

If you had a faulty device, that has nothing to do with yakju.
And besides, there have been reports that people returned their non-yakju device with yakju installed, with NO issue. On the contrary, there have been NO reports (that I have seen on XDA anyway) of anyone being denied warranty because of installing yakju (which by the way, is the factory image...).

Understandable question for sure, but I joined this forum when I was researching my first Nexus device and all roads led here. Any question could be answered here, any information found. Just because I don't dive into flashing my phone doesn't mean questions don't come up or I don't have the urge to know what's coming out or available now. Basically XDA has become my authority on cell phones even though I don't mod mine to its fullest potential.

Yes. Given you are on 4.0.2 (or 4.0.1), you can follow this step-by-step to root. Then you can install Titanium Backup, which will back up everything for you. Then follow this step-by-step to flash yakju.
It's not difficult at all -- actually quite simple. I'm sure it looks much more daunting than it actually is.
Updates are rolled out in BATCHES. Not everyone or every firmware version receives updates at the same time. That's how it is and how it's always been.

Correct, but yakju and takju will ALWAYS get updates before the other GSM builds. Case in point: only yakju and takju are on 4.0.4, and they were on 4.0.2 first.

still they should make nexus in a one build GSM, one build CDMA. No point of having a nexus phone that is behind in support! Atleast they should print on the box "this product is not supported by google"

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OTA will be available in a few hours

Guys,
The mentioned on stage that JB preview version OTA will be available on the distributed phones within a few hours of turning them on. This means, that we need some folks at IO to run logacat BEFORE update and grab that link so that we can all get the OTA before mid-July

Guys is someone empowered here to either get that message out - if they have a friend visiting Google IO to whom they can send this message and monitor progress or if they have the power to spread the word including instructions through Android blogs.
Or how about XDA making a front page post on telling folks at IO to grab link before update.

I think the people there will know to grab the link seeing as they are devs
there is cyanogen there at google i/o..he should know how to grab it no? haha
not sure if they can grab it that easily..maybe there are some restrictions...
it seems to much strange to me that they can grab it that easily, because if they do, and upload here..tomorrow half world will have jelly bean lol
Hopefully someone ports it to toro

Need to clarify upfront that this is just for the devices being given away at Google I/O. They get these later today at 4pm PST.
What this really means is Jellybean is nearly ready, and our yakju Nexii will receive it officially soon.

Even if the OTA link doesn't work for anyone outside of I/O (which I'm sure there would be a way around), someone could just do a system dump. I can almost guarantee someone at I/O right now is already intending on doing this. With 6000 developers attending, I'd be shocked if it doesn't leak

Soon, as in mid-July at the earliest unless we get that OTA from some kind contributor.
Playing devils advocate here but what is the possibility that each person has had to sign a non disclosure/leak agreement and that each individual has their own download address thus if it leaks its obvious? Just seems way to easy for this to get out and a little careless on Googles part...Though if it does ill be celebrating as well

You make some good points about NDA's and such. Dynamic links aren't too far fetched, either. Also, it's possible for certain files to have a signature of some kind. But like they say, if there's a will, there's a way. Even if it comes down to needing to be a system dump, any identifying tracks could be cleaned up before it's leaked. There's a lot out of Google's control, and I think they would actually have expectations for a leak. It's happened several times before. If they were overly worried about it, they wouldn't be giving it out today.
Has anyone considered that they may not give a sh*t if it leaks? They can't push it as an OTA for everyone because it's a developers preview. They're giving it to everyone at I/O because they're developers(supposed to be anyways), but why would they be concerned with other developers getting their hands on the build?
I think think the main motivation for not making it a public OTA just yet is because of it's beta status, and the fact that there are a LOT of people walking around with Galaxy Nexus devices. If it ends up being plagued with bugs, that would be bad PR.

Verizon Jelly Bean Leak

Looks like Verizon will be getting Jelly Bean 4.1.1 soon. Any AT&T love?

Wait 12 days dude. The devices haven't even been released so that means that source code hasn't even been released yet.

Wait 12 days for what? What devices haven't been released yet? If you're talking about Nexus 4, that's not what I'm talking about, and the Nexus 4, is Jelly Bean 4.2, not 4.1.1, which is what I was talking about. If Sprint can release it, and Verizon can leak it, why can't AT&T at least leak something, even if it goes through another 2 or 3 leaks before official release.

Thought you were talking about 4.2. But either way. You're comparing carriers. Different carriers release faster than others. So to say verizon or sprint can do it doesn't really hold any significance. AT&T does there own thing. So if you're waiting on them I wouldn't hold your breath dude.
I realize that carriers release things differently, and VERIZON, didn't release there's it's a LEAK. So all I am asking is, where is the AT&T LEAK?

Why do you even need ATT leak when you can use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956463
I have been using it for 3 days and it works flawlessly
Because I want something specifically designed for my phone, not one that's close. Also I've seen several articles on here about people having problems with the Sprint version, especially with the GPS, and having to go back to stock 4.1.1, and reset etc......... I use my GPS a lot, so don't have time and can't afford it not to be guaranteed to work. Hence wanting an AT&T leak.

By definition, a leak is, something an owner doesn't want to be made available and somehow becomes available before it's suppose to.
I wouldn't expect AT&T to volontarily "release" a leak...
They're only doing a better job than the other carriers keeping their stuff to themselves.
Of course, that's unless Sprint and Verizon intentionnaly leaked theirs...

Hahah u sound frustrated. Even when the ATT leak comes don't expect it to be 100%.
As for the Sprint leaks I understand your reluctancy to flash it. Worse case is if it didn't work flash back to what did. That's the great part about Android.
I had issue with a certain JB rom until I found Graxxixnyc port and it works flawlessly. GPS et al.
Other then that just wait for ATT to give us JB, but as task said don't hold your breath as if we get official from them by the end of this year we would be lucky.

Yes, I know it's something that the owner doesn't want out, but yet somehow all carriers seem to have them. Which was the point of this post. Never said they would "voluntarily" release it, otherwise I would have stated that implicitly. All I said was that since the OFFICIAL SPRINT release is out, and a leaked version of Verizon's SG3 software as of 10/8/2012 where is the AT&T version?

1.) You didn't even try and help. I did.
2.) You brought your personal opinion of me into a development site. Leave your emotions at the door. Your personal opinions do not belong here.
3.) Contribute or add something here or it's a waste of a post. Learn that.

I'm not sure how long you've been with AT&T, but they seem to take the longest out of all of the carriers in terms of their release times. Leaks come and go and sometimes never come. Basically it's just a waiting game dude. Patience is key when with AT&T.

Its not about trolling "dude" its about talking to people in a respectful manner. I think its silly that when a some users are a developer they feel like they can come on and talk down to people. I'll just as soon run stock cupcake 1.5 on my phone than have some one treat me like **** for asking a question. But hey you're a grown man do what you want. people sniffing your corn hole for the latest ROM has went to your head apparently.

Lol. Please grow up dude. I mentioned something along the lines that source hasn't been released yet and this is what you get from it? It was a simple error in reading it correctly. Happens every day dude. Get used to it. That's not only weird but its also taking something waaaay out of context. This is you holding a grudge for some reason or another and releasing it in a development site. So either you should keep to yourself or contribute to this community. That's what XDA is all about dude.
Thank you Task650, I realize that AT&T takes FOREVER, been with them seems like FOREVER. I know that leaks come and go, all I'm asking, is if anyone has any information about any AT&T leaks, not leaks from other carriers, that if you stand on your head, and spin, then it will work, and that if it doesn't you can always go back. I know all this, and if that is what I wanted to do I'd do it. But what I'm looking for is an AT&T leak, that way it's has the most chance of having most if not all things working properly. I am patient when waiting for things to happen, but just asking a friendly does anyone know if one is out yet, or heard anything is all.

They take longer than forever from what I've seen. Which really sucks for the user that wants to run stock official roms. There is no leak yet. You will definitely know when there is because it will be posted in the development forum and users that use touchwhiz will be all over it.

you should really be concentrating on #2 & #3. please remind yourself that this site is about development. please go to the more appropriate places like Facebook, Twitter, or start a blog if you feel the need to voice your personal opinions about me. Your observations are just that. yours. but either way they belong elsewhere. please stop polluting XDA with them. thanks.
P.S- See how every one of your posts do not include any help for the original author of this thread? That says something about you. You might want to take a look at that.
