[BUG?] WiFi drops after a few minutes...just off/on helps - The FINAL ANSWER search - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey my xda friends out there!
Being a pretty new Nexus owner, I´m getting crazy by serious WiFi issues over here. My Nexus can´t get any stable Wifi connection at all...as soon as I´m making up a connection, I can be pretty sure that I will loose it after a few minutes. The only way out of this is...like I knew it from buggy roms before...to switch WiFi off and on again. After this procedure, I do have WiFi again, but it´s the same situation like before...after a few minutes --> bam, I´m out again.
Well, after some research on several forums out there, I can be sure that there are some other guys, struggling with same issues as well. Some of them are just having some standby issues, some of them can´t get any wifi connection at all. But an answer to my sort of issue? No way...
So what´s the deal here? I´m on a Stock Rom, what could be the reason for my WiFi issues? Any ideas?
Would be very very grateful for some support!!

Having the same problem here. YouTube seems to knock out Wi-Fi for me. Or marketplace downloads.

My initial suspicion is on a router configuration. Do you have this issue on multiple wireless networks, or just yours at home/work? Try somewhere like a coffee shop with an unsecured network. If you don't have the same issues on other networks, I'd look into messing with your wireless configuration. My router at home gives me issues losing connection to Google's servers (gray signal bars) intermittently, and I haven't yet found a solution.

Hey copkay! Thanks for your input!
The point is:
Dell Streak,
HD2,
SGSII,
Flyer,
Touchpad,
Transformer,
Galaxy Note,
Sensation.
ALL of them worked/are working well. So this has to be a Nexus thing, or am I wrong? Maybe its working better with an unsecured open WiFi Hotspot, but hey, this shouldn´t be the main place to work (imao!)
What do you think about it?

You have too many gadgets.
But yes, that's a good question. WiFi can be finicky with some drivers, so it's possible that yes, it's a problem with the Nexus in particular. The reason I'm asking is that it's much easier to narrow down the problem when you eliminate certain solutions. So does it work properly on other wireless networks? Does it do the same? Does it drop connection entirely, and if so, for how long? Or does it simply switch to gray bars?
I certainly don't recommend switching to no network security, but if it's a particular router/setting, more information would help to deduce the problem.

I had some of the same issues with my wifi (as well as sometimes it wouldn't fully connect and would get into an authenticating loop). I never had this on my past devices though. I don't know the ultimate solution to it, but I have found some work arounds for some of the networks I frequent.
What I've found is that I've had to turn off the auto detect wifi frequency band and leave only the 2.4ghz band while other times I've had to turn it back to auto detect.
While annoying and not the desired answer, hopefully it can help you out in the mean time.

[Q] Wifi Tethering with Mac

Hey guys I am having problems with the wifi hotspot on my Nexus with my Mac. It will connect fine but after about 5 min the internet will cut out but still remain connected. Have no problems with my iPhone 4 from work so it is something to do with the phone. Any ideas on how to fix it? Very frustrating.

Are you on 4.0.1? I heard that .1 has some kind of issues with tethering taht were solved in newer builds. Did you try to tether to some other computer?
Yeah I am on 4.0.1. Have not tried other computer. Have found turning location services off fixes the problem. Is it hard to flash to yakju build so I can get 4.0.2? Is there any way to do this to void my warranty?

IMHO this whole yakju-better-than-yakjusomething is over hyped. There were threads where yakjusomething builds got updates, and yakju didn't. I wouldn't bother my self to wipe phone and flash other builds If I were you, well I'm not going to do that since I have yakjuxw or something similar It's still a Nexus, you WILL get any update as soon as it will be possible! Earlier I had Nexus S i9023 with SLCD screen (I loved that screen BTW) and I was getting updates couple of weeks after Android sites started to write about them. It looks like Google disabled updates after battery complains from users. For some time now I haven't heard about anyone getting .3 or .2 update to any SGN. Just my thoughts, sorry for little OT
Thanks again for the reply. Yeah I might just leave it as it is until I get the update. Turning location services off doesn't seem to fix the problem it is still disconnecting. Will just use my iPhone 4 for now :-(
Have now also found that I can not connect the nexus through bluetooth either. The Mac won't even recognise it. Any way around this? Grrrr

Thanks mate . Bluetooth is working ok now. Have found an app called wifi hotspot which seems to be holding the connection.
im also having the exact same issue. i'm on att. running an AOSP custom 4.0.3 Rom. I tried using att's tether apn and it keeps reverting back to Cingular 410, however i dont believe this is the issue, i think its related to the OS itself. is it Mac related? i have no other computers to test it with :-/
Maybe this: https://plus.google.com/103583939320326217147/posts/1Yy1jb9z4TA will help? In the post there is a zip for mac
Hey mate thanks for the link unfortunately it doesn't make a difference and for some reason the net won't work on wifi hotspot at all now. It connects but that is it :-(.
I didn't have time to really look into it, but I have some idea. Can you try how will it work when you disable security in settings? I mean make it an open network for, a second and try some browsing
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
that seemed to work on my nexus one and iphone 4 when i tethered. tried it with my gnex, same results, still showing connected, but no internet access after 5-15 min. i checked the status log of wifi tether for android, as it was doing the same thing with this app, and the it showed the wifi interface disconnecting by itself, i didn't do anything. Definitely OS related. Interestingly enough, this has happened both on the stock kernel and this franco 9.2 i'm running right now. Likewise with stock rom and this my current rom. so who knows.....very annoying though. :-/
Ok, with the network open on the Nexus the connection is fine on my Mac. As soon as I enable security though I have problems. Thanks heaps for the help so far but is there any solution available for this? Not real keen on leaving my connection open.
Sorry to bump. I'm having this issue as well. Verizon Galaxy Nexus on 4.0.2. My MacBook Pro connects to the hotspot fine and works for a bit, but then stops working. I can run network diagnostics to make it work again, but I have to keep doing that every 5-10 minutes or so and it makes it too annoying to use.
My iPad 2, iPhone 4, TouchPad, and mom's Windows laptop works just fine and never have these issues. It's only my MacBook. Anybody find a solution yet?
Exactly the same problem here.. Galaxy Nexus tethered wifi macbook pro running 10.7.2. Stays connected, but stopps passing any packets. Ipad, and other devices are still connected working properly, and the phone itself can use the LTE data connection. I've tried stock 4.0.2, as well as AOKP 4.0.3 latest build.. no luck. I've also tried both the native AP and android-wifi-tether too. Any help would be appreciated and rewarded.
---------- Post added at 04:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
PS - I even have the tethering option enabled on my Verizon account... (in case you were thinking it had something to do with big red blocking data)
I am still suffering this problem too. :-(. It is a real issue when I work outside the office a lot and do not have any problems with my work Iphone 4. I found pdanet works connected by USB but you can not access secure sites on the free version. Is there good alternative to pdanet?
hey guys. i now use an open network when i tether. it seems to keep a stable internet connection (packets transferring). the longest i've maintained a working tethering connection has been 2 hours....so it seemed good enough for me. Let me know how u guys fair if u do try an open network. still a weird issue imo that doesn't have too many solutions or even suggestions in the xda community (probably cause not many are tethering?). gl.
Hey, when I put my phone to an open connection mine is stable too. Must be something to do with the security. Wish there was a solution, I can't keep mine open the whole time :-(.
Anyone found a fix for this yet? Just about to return mine, tired of it not working. Have updated to 4.02 and my Mac to 10.7.3

problem with wifi

I have problem with my nexus, wifi is connected but I cannot access any internet. Sometimes interet works normal, then suddenly disappears, wifi is connected normal but there isnt internet
I tired wih other android phone, samsung galaxy ace, but same thing
But nokia n8 works normal, this dosnt happening
I do not know of which can be either the router or the phone
I tried to change settings on the phone and the router but nothing
If someone has an idea, I would be grateful to him
I had the same problem on my nexus, while the wifi worked fine on other devices. I flashed several different ROMS, to no avail, and resolved myself to believe that it was a hardware problem. Before flashing back to stock, I reset the Router, just for laughs. Problem solved. Make sure your wifi settings on android are correct, and try resetting your router. It's worth a shot. Which ROM are you on?
i tired several times with reseting router, even change settings, sometimes internet start to work but after 30-40 minuts stops again
i dosnt now what exactly ROM is on phone, becouse i just buy him
Without knowing the ROM, and at the risk of sounding like a tech support douche, maybe you should try a wipe/factory reset.

Hi,
I am new to dealing with the Android OS with my Galaxy Nexus, but I am thinking the same thing. My main concern is backing up and reinstalling all of my information, apps etc. I use Titanium backup pro for my backups but would like to know if my phone will be recognized when I try to reload all of my apps.
Thank you for your reply.

I have WiFi problems at my house. It shows that I am connected but no internet. I know is the router in my case.
I would test your WiFi somewhere else, such as Starbucks or Barnes and Noble.

Hi,
I have connection everywhere - Starbucks, home, Staples, Chapters/Indigo (Barnes and Nobles equivalent in Canada), even borrowing Wifi from unsecured home networks etc. but the disconnect is between the Wifi and getting my Internet to connect. Connection bars are all gray and at home very strong signal showing. This reminds me of connection problems I had with my laptops (running the MS OS of course), but in the Android OS I am a "newbie" and reading forums trying to figure what other people's connection problems are, and how they were solved.
There are no Wifi connection problems using my laptop (now) or my daughter's iPods, my wife's Blackberry Bold at home. My data works find, and I wish there was a roll back feature to the time just prior to the problem occurring last Thursday. My understanding is I have to completely restore my system, and this leads me to more questions about if I can reload all of my apps or if I will have to pay for them again. In the end, it may be faster.
I downloaded - per member recommendation - a Wifi analyzer and it shows that my home Wifi speed is excellent.
Thanks, I am always open to ideas to solve.
Do you know how to find the version of ROM on my Galaxy Nexus? I must look.

WiFi often not reconnecting (not hardware related)

I've been having this problem ever since I got my One X; unfortunately, the WiFi hardware issues make it hard to search for any possible fixes. Basically, my One X (Tegra 3, 2.17.401.2 currently) will very rarely reconnect to WiFi after turning it on from sleep. I tried manually assigning an IP address instead of doing DHCP as suggested in some places; this didn't seem to have much of an effect, and there are some places where I can't manually assign. The only thing that's reliable is if I manually toggle WiFi off and back on -- at that point it'll instantly find a network and connect. I've tried the various wifi power savings settings and other bits; none make a difference. This is pretty annoying; it's almost as if the phone doesn't bother to scan for APs until I manually toggle it.
With 2.17.401.2 fixing a whole bunch of other little annoyances, this is probably the biggest one that's left for me. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix or work around this?
I read somewhere (can't fine the post) an xda user fixed this issue by soldering (physically) the wifi antenna inside the phone.
I don't recommend that though. I'm not a fan of opening up my phone.
However, I suggest you try a custom ROM from the many available here. Maybe this will fix it for you if it were a software/radio issue.
Yeah, that doesn't seem like the right way to go... pretty sure it's not a hardware issue since I have no problems with wifi reception in general. The phone just doesn't seem to search for wifi to connect to as often as it should.
Sounds so familiar

Same issue here ...
Not sure whether this is hardware problem though, most of the complaints that were verified as hardware problem were signal and connection related.
Our mutual problem is RE-connecting.
Anyways, I haven't found any solution for this yet. Turning on and off always works.
One idea I have is to use an app like AutomateIt, this is an automation app that lets you set rules for bunch of stuff on your phone.
One use case could be setting a rule to turn wifi on once at home, turn off once out of home and turn back on once at work etc..
Hope someone will find a solution for this ...
Multitasking and wifi are major pain in the a** for me with this otherwise great phone ..
try wifi fixer app from market
I'm not a fan of automation taskers. They are battery hogs.
Try the custom rom ARHD 9.4.0 and let me know how it goes.

Wi-Fi unreliable

Recently I've been having problems with Wi-Fi. My phone and nexus 7. They both stay on blue bars all the time claiming they're connected to Google servers. And it'll work good for about 20 seconds and then I'll have no connection for about a minute. Bars will stay blue like its connected and WiFi show that it's fill signal but pages won't load, apps will timeout and YouTube videos won't stream. Makes it impossible to download any Roms or apps at times. This just recently started happening. Videos will stream good for maybe 2 minutes tops. Then pause, after a minute Wi-Fi will stay streaming and going again by itself and stream. I haven't changed my router or is settings. I have static ip's assigned too. All other computers work just fine for internet. Never a problem.
I've tried changing kernels, Roms, complete wipes and reinstalls. Rebooted the router. Nothing fixes it. I'm getting really frustrated. I'm at the point where I'm going trio go buy a new router just cause I want to use 5ghz. Anyways, any suggestions to solve this?

Weird how it affects just my device in an entire thread with a ton of people using the rom and same kernel.
I went and picked up a new router. I'll see if that fixes it. Thanks for the input though. I appreciate it.
Didn't help with new router. My WiFi still cutting out like crazy on Franco kernel. Almost as soon as I turn off screen. But its not turning WiFi off. Just goes into some sort of state where nothing comes through. When screen on everything is fine though now.
In Wifi settings, you could try unchecking "Avoid Poor Connections" and see if that helps.
Also do you have any other devices at home on the same wifi network - do they experience the same issues, I know where I am if we get a lot of rain, it causes intermittent internet slowdowns, I had similar issues and after testing other devices found this to be my problem not my Wifi.
Also, have you got any cordless phones in the house that might run on the same frequency?
I still have an issue keeping wifi at 100% d/l when the phone is asleep, even though the setting is for always on. It must be a hardware thing for me because every rom I've tried from ICS to the latest JB exhibit the same issue. If I am in a desperate need to d/l a large file on my phone, I just temporarily change the screen display off timer to 10 minutes of so so the wifi will stay at max d/l speed.

Ya avoid poor connections is unchecked. And wifi optimization is unchecked. I've tried putting my router on full auto, tried setting static ip addresses for everything. Changing from wireless n to wireless g. Changing security to off as well. Using the 5ghz band instead of 2.4. The nexus 7 is working perfectly fine with the new router. But my galaxy nexus is totally unreliable. Weird is that it just started happening within past couple weeks. And actually, it was good for the first day or so after new router. I can confirm all other wifi devices jn the house work just fine without any hiccups. I've never had a problem with other devices. No dropouts or anything. It's really puzzling me!
One thing I found weird, if I disable wmm on my router, my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus will not connect. Anyone else get this?
I hope you also have your router firmware completely up to date.

Ya my router auto updates itself. Its a Cisco EA6500 in case your wondering and is helpful.
I use my wifi at work and it's very unreliable. At times going into an endless disconnect/reconnect loop. Sometimes restarting the wifi helps or putting it in and out of airplane mode. Other times nothing helps except a reboot of my phone. Some apps may make the issue worse. I don't think there is a fix and waiting for google to fix the flaw a user pointed out earlier.

Possibly a 4.2 issue. But its not affecting everyone it seems. But i see that there is a huge thread about this at the google site. Not an isolated case

I set static on both router and the phone. I've tried all the north american radios. None of the euro ones. no effect. Sticking to the latest North American radio for now. I've managed to make it work sorta with CM10.1 with stock kernel on completely fresh install. It works, but the down arrow on the Wi-Fi icon stays lit almost 100% of the time. no idea why, only other device that was on all yesterday was the nexus 7, and that was on the 2.4ghz and phone the 5ghz. Huge wlan_rx_wake!

When i first updated to 4.2, I was getting crazy dropouts. After unchecking the Wi-fi optimization, it was more consistent but still drops out frequently while at work. There is a known bug with the wifi driver that hasn't been addressed for years, but still trying to find the original articles describing the problems.
It seems you are having tons of issues, worse than most.
If you are having a problems suggested on this site, maybe this can help.

It affects me as well. Completely random. Everything appears fine except that instead of blue, the icons are grey. Turning off wifi and turning it back on fixes it.
In the link above, there is a comment where you can submit more info for Google to help solving the problem:

the weird thing is, it just started happening about 2 weeks ago. It was perfectly fine up until then. Never had an issue with Wi-Fi. If this don't work i might try doing an entire wipe right back to stock and locking bootloader.

Weak WiFi Connections

I've never seen this particular problem before. My WiFi is working just fine... except for that the signal has gotten a lot weaker.
So if I'm sitting in my office where my router is located I connect just fine. But from pretty much any other room in the house the signal is so weak that the connection is spotty at best. I know it's not the router because all my other devices work just fine on it. And I know it's a device issue because it now has this problem regardless of the router it's connecting to.
I've tried forgetting all my networks and then signing back into them. I've tried apps like WiFi Analyzer and WiFi Connection Manager, both of which confirm the weak signal but can't do anything about it. I've tried a factory data reset. I ensured the firmware is up to date. Nothing has worked.
I cannot think of anything that has changed with the tablet that would have caused this. The only thing that has changed recently is that I got a Samsung magnetic case for it but I cannot imagine that this would cause a WiFi issue as it's a Samsung product and I've used them before.
I believe if you search, there have been similar discussion of weak wifi signal with the tablet.
It may be a hardware thing that may require opening up your tablet to address.
