[Q] Arc S vs LG Optimus 2X - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA. Right now, i have a LG O2X, just turning a year old. My dad just orderd an arc s for a small price. He really doesnt care what phone it is, he just wants to go read the news on the fly.
So, should i choose the Arc? Btw, my mom has a pair of livesound headphones laying around.
So:
Arc S:
Better screen?
Fully working ics
Sleek
Good headphones
but:
Slower
not so much for gaming.
viewing angles?
LG:
Fast with custom rom ( using temasek kang):
Good screen?
but:
thick, heavy
not much support from nvidia.
What would you choose?
I listen to music for about 1.5-2 hours per day while surfing the web on 3G. I play occasionally.

I think you're asking this in the wrong place... Most of us will prefer the ARC, since we have it...
Anyway...
The ARC community works really hard and we always have updates and improved roms here... I'm to a point where I flash a new rom, kernel, bb every week... Because of that, the phone gets better everyday, so I don't think it's drastically slower... You can always OC it too... The ARC S with DOOM's kernel you can go up to 2ghz... And still get good battery life... Just to know, my 7 home screen on ICS are full of widgets (I don't keep icons or anything else on them)... I keep 4 e-mail accounts with the sinc on the whole day, a twitter account with the updates for every 5 minutes, a facebook account every 30 minutes, samething with LinkedIn and G+... I listen to music for 2h-2h30 everyday, Around 3h/4h of calls and I still get a whole 24h on my battery...
Right now I have ICElite by zdzihu and it's great... It's still a bit laggy, but I'm sure they're working to fix it... I also had Arconium which was a great ROM and many other MIUIs that had a perfect smooth experience... Still, ICS is great to work, the UI is the best I've seen up to now...
The screen is great and the design of the phone is top!!! It fits on your hand perfectly... Everywhere I go, people who are not much into phones ask me what phone it is... I just love it...
I will need a separate phone for work in June and I'm really thinking about getting an ARC S and have two ARCs...
For reference, I always check Engadget for these questions and I think they have a post about the two phones...
I hope I helped...
Cheers!!!

I would like to say, SE Xperia Arc S, is not worth the price.
Just like all the other Sony handsets released with out-dated specs, they only work with because of their magnificent looks.
I own an Arc S, it dint proved powerful. 1.4Ghz is no upto mark.
The phone calling feature in Stock Rom itself is very slow, it doesn't respond quick and the SE interface is comparative slow. Tried many custom Launchers, but when returning back to home, it was lagging.
My previous phones have been HTC WF, WFS, Evo 4g, I would say they worked quite well with the specs they had.
One more thing I have noticed in Arc S, the applications quickly close while multitasking. E.g. Using Browser and Opera Mobile simultaneously, one of them closes, and this din't happened with Evo 4G, also, Market and Opera dint go well.
I have expressed cons above.
The Pros,
Really awesome display. Though, AMOLED was much richer, I liked the display.
If you are going to choose custom ROMs, the phone Rocks. Just as mariolcneto said, many mods are available which makes the phone even better. But, its upto you, if you want to customize, root, the phone, the phone will provide you everything.
Camera is quiet reliable, but the best part is, its too quick to shoot. Very quick indeed.
Sound quality is promising.
LG O2X, is quiet powerful, lacks the community support though.
Choose the phone according to your needs.
All the best.

Well, you can try your dad's phone(if he lets you ).
I prefer Arc, although it is slower(definitely not slow, but a bit slower than the 2X).
Arc has larger and better screen than the 2X. Arc has better camera also.
On the other hand, 2X is faster/better performance. And I believe the community is a bit larger(although Arc has a load of roms/tweaks/themes)
When I bought my Arc S, my second alternative was 2X, but I were so excited of the Arc's screen, and here we are.
Hard decision to make, but if you're gonna buy Arc, buy Arc S instead of the older Arc(1.4GHz vs 1GHz)

Thank you all for sharing. I also posted the question on the O2X forums. It seems that i am confused.
Hmm, yes indeed the LG is fast, but my mother has a Ray, and it is not considerably slower :S
As of the community, i think the O2X has a bigger one, but there is no support from nVidia.(Or LG, (LeakedROM)). Therefor the Arc S i think is a better choice when looking at it like that.
ArmorD - He ordered an Arc S
I the end, i think i will let him choose, makes my decision more easy
Oh, and by the way, the Arc has a bigger resolution. 854x480 vs 800v480
Again, thank you!

Xperia X10i or HTC Desire

Hello
First sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I'm new to smartphones and Android and have a bit of a dilema!
I have an Xperia X10i and am supposed to be exchanging it for a HTC Desire next week, for reasons I will go into, but my big question first is am I making the right choice.
I got out my X10 yesterday after another delay with getting the HTC and after finding some UI changes and other apps on these awesome forums, I am starting to like the X10 more.
Sure the battery lasts about 9 hours but I'm looking into fixes, other things I didn't enjoy, like the UI I have changed with the awesome ADW Launcher.
Now the main reason I wanted to change the phone was, and this is going to sound really childish and stupid, but was for multitouch, well that and the newer version of android, which I think the X10 will get eventually, however for some reason I feel I need multitouch?
When getting a smartphone I looked forward to playing all my old Snes Roms etc on the way to work on the train, which is nigh on impossible to do properly without multitouch.
I installed the Wiimotion? app to use a Wii mote on my X10 which is awesome but won't help when I'm on the train.
Now I know that's a bit of a frivilous reason but I dunno, seeing all my work colleague pinch and zoom and playing Monkey Island and Conta got me jealous.
I haven't used a Desire but had a quick go of a mates Legend and wasn't blown away or anything. I actually think I prefer the look/style of my X10, but I still like the Desire, I know the camera's better on the X10 but that's pretty much it isn't it?
So there is my question really, should I change my X10 for a Desire, mainly for the updated Android and Multitouch!
I've posted this in X10 and Desire forums, again sorry if thats a no-no.
I bought my desire a couple of weeks ago now, and when deciding what to buy i was posed with the same question, x10 or desire, at first i was drawn to the x10, i liked it looks and the ui looked cool to, but after comparing the stats at gsm arena it was clear the the better fone was the desire, for starters the amoled screen isnt only better than the xperias lcd but it aparantly also uses less battery, obviously the other thing was multi touch, at this level of technology multi touch should be as standard in all handsets and i think sony have shot themselves in the foot there, also the desire has more ram, and ofcourse sence witch is easly the best launcher on android, i can easly get 24 hrs plus battery out of my desire with moderate usage
Cheers dude yea I made the mistake of asuming multitouch was as standard, I've heard differing opinions on the screen apparently the X10 is better in sunlight? But the Desire has much more colours?

to be hones pal, my hero has a standard lcd and its no better in sunlight than my desire, the desires screen reflects the sun alot more tho so watch out for sunglare as for colours, the desire has 16 million and the xperia has 64 thousand lol you can compare full phone specs ere http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3077&idPhone2=2964
Xperia only has 64 thousand colours due to the version of Android it is running...it will be better with an upgrade to 2.1/2.2. However multi touch will never find it's way onto the x10.
I love my Desire and you can use ADW on it too. Plus i like having multi touch so i can press B to run on Pokemon... lol.
"i like having multi touch so i can press B to run on Pokemon... lol."
Exactly dude, lol, it may be a little thing for some people, but I don't know if I can really live without it!
And cheers for the link AndroHero
get the desire! its awesome!

Agreed!!
Don't get the X10 , i haven't tested it myself but i have only heard bad things about it from people i know.
HTC Desire = Great phone ( Best phone i have ever had )
Cheers guys, yea hopefully I can get the Desire on Wed, just waiting for delivery, hopefully there not jerking me around.
if I make choice again i take Desire
compare with X10 ,Desire is much much better in all specification
I've heard nothing but bad things about SE's smartphones, not heard one good review. Their old dumphones used to be amazing though =D
I've had my X10 since 31th of March and I managed to withdraw the purchase and the first thing I did was buy the Desire. I think that the X10 is prettier but the UI isn't really that nice anymore although I'm also having troubles with the Sense atm.
But I actually think that the Desire is a better phone and I'm happy I changed.
Get a HTC desire much better phone in every aspect.. Apart from maybe the camera. The x10i will most likely never get froyo but the htc desire will (even if we have to wait a while)
Cheers
I wanted a x10 at first too, but when they announced it wouldn't have multi touch I was kinda shocked. Few days went by and more confirmations about no multitouch were coming in so that's when I dropped my (to be purchased) X10.
Now I think the X10 is ugly and fat. UI I liked before became too blue. And no information about 2.2.
Desire seems more future proof to me.
-android 2.2
-Amoled
-More Ram
- (not sure about this) More users
I don't see x10 getting any update aside from the 2.1 update which it should have from the start....
I wanted the multi touch for the games too
Just an update for those in the same predicament I was.
I (finally) got the HTC Desire on Friday and love it already,
it's feels much more fluid than the X10,
am loving the multitouch, can finally play Mario Kart and Parodious on the train!
The camera feels pretty decent, haven't used it much, but I never really do,
Everything just seems slightly easier, but I put that down to HTC being more experienced than SE with smartphones,
which is a shame because I honestly think I prefer the actual look of the X10, it's screen seemed eyecatching for some reason, and it is still a bloody good phone even with it's limitations.
The Desires only fault for me is it looks to much like an iPhone/etc, other than that great phone.
So when SE have a couple more smartphones under the belt I'll give them another look
but for now I'm happy with my Desire.
Thanks for all the help guys!
P.S. Any recommendatons for vital/usefull apps would be much appreciated. Thanks again guys.
Hi sorry about this guys but I was wondering is there any way to save space with the HTC Desire as I'm quickly filling it up with apps
Can I save apps to the SD without rooting it or is there any other workaround/tip?
Thanks and sorry guys.

[Q] Should I get this phone?

Currently, I have LG G2x and frankly I hate it with passion.
I'm on T-Mobile and I understand I won't get their so called "4G" internet and only Edge which is fine.
I really like the design of phone and integration of facebook and all of the fun stuff. Is it worth the downgrade? I mean, I don't play games, I don't even surf the internet on my G2x. Just facebook and gadu-gadu communicator. it seems dual-core phone is a waste to me...
Or better it would be to wait for Arc S?
Arc S and current Arc is basically the same everything, only difference is the white body and stock speed set to 1.4Ghz vs 1.0Ghz of the current Arc. The current Arc is also cheaper since its older.
Like you I don't play games or do something to stress the phone, so Arc more than satisfies my requirement for now.

Arc S's exterior material is better. won't be so plastic. I don't know how to describe.
Arc S is a better choice. Hope SE also fix the housing crack problem.

IMO Getting an Arc from G2X is not a Downgrade from my Point of View
LG G2X may be the first Dual-Core mobile, but in reality, it was rushed and causes lots of problems, like overheating, phone rebooting, unresponsive phone after a couple of months used(i read a lot about this, also i have a friend who have Optimus 2X and can confirm this problems too) so the phone is not really that great in every day use, Raw Dual Core power but it is not optimized for Better User Experience
While Xperia Arc S, is a refreshed Arc with more CPU Power in it, the overall its the same, I have to say that SE really did a great job to optimize the Phone for Excellent User Experience
I have Xperia Arc, I managed 250hrs of no boot, after that i got 1 random reboot when I was doing heavy task to my Arc, I play a lot and Browse a lot, all I can say is very Excellent Phone.
about Crack Issues in Sensor in Xperia Arc no one can deny that it is not happening, usually Midnight Blue version gets this cracks while Misty Silver have low users reporting they have this Issue, Mine doesn't have it yet, and hopefully it wont
and warranty does cover the replacement of the front cover, and I read somewhere in SE support forums, that they will have the reinforced front cover replacing those old ones, same Material but Better and Stronger.
maybe, just maybe that Arc S will not have this Crack Issues, SE knows this Issue for a Long time now, and that's why it is covered by warranty, so Arc S might have the Reinforced Material
Well you aren't using the smartphones smart, so sticking with the old arc is fine.

Sorry for confusing you.
What I meant was exterior 'coating' is better.
means more beautiful (not because of the color)
the source is ...I feel it, touch it, and play it.......

Hmm what do you mean?
Anyway, OP: get the Arc. It's great for just anything.
@besthijacker: The Arc is quite good... but keep in mind that (if it concerns you) there are still no custom ROM available... just one kernel and CM7 version that still does not have camer support. MIUI and other custom ROM aren't available for some time. The Xperia Arc has a lack of developers and you can feel it inside the dev-section of the xperia arc :-(
It's a pitty because the phone is generally speaking rather good and has an excellent design!
The amount of custom roms and kernels is awesome for G2x but I think after looking at videos and pictures, I fell in love in SE UI's...I used to know Xperia Pro Mini for a short and it was pretty slick, in terms of UI...and until LG G2x gets Ice-Cream Sandwich, dual-core is totally useless(IMO)
While, I do not have any issues with my G2x like some people, I feel phone does not meet my expectations in terms of UI which I love about SE in general...
My first phone was SE and have been only getting SE phones for last 6 years
Thanks, I will sell G2x and buy Arc, but what is the "crack issue". Should I get Blue or Silver version in that case?
I will try to sell G2X for good money but probably will have to add some $$$. I see Arc goes for 420$ brand new on phones sites and around 400$ used on ebay. I won't get that much for my LG G2x..go figure
The crack issue is a tiny hairline crack near the light sensor on the front - you have to look real close to see it - seems to be much more common on the midnight blue than the silver.. but having said that - I wouldn't let it stop you from choosing the blue if that's the colour you want - it's not a big deal.. and they may well have solved the problem with newer manufactured handsets.
If you like the SE UI then I reckon you won't be looking for custom ROMs anyway? You should try to get an unbranded one though so that you get firmware updates quicker, and also allows you to unlock the Boot Loader easily so that you can install custom kernel for over clocking and flashing pre-rooted system images..
My system is rooted stock, with a few bit's removed, but I have doomlords kernel and overclocked to 1.55Ghz.
By unbranded you mean, it does not belong to any network and there is no logo of the network right?
I will probably buy it from welectronics or plemix, since its only $400..or ebay if I find around $350 but used...I rather pay extra and get brand new in the box.
I'm running stock rom, rooted with custom kernel on my G2x. At first it was all fun, flashing different custom roms but eventually got bored because I relized...I have no use for any of the features heheh
Same here.. Custom roms don't really appeal to me.. Not seen any that give me more than stock.. And I like the SE ui. By unbranded I mean that it's the basic SE software, with no network software tailoring over the top. Although I think that the devs on here may have cracked the bootloader for branded handsets too now.. I unlocked mine the day that SE released the service.

I found a website that has Arc S for $440, while Arc is $400. Is it worth that $40 extra? I wonder if Arc S will suffer from same "crack" issue or not? -,-
If you have 40$ more, go for it.
Noone knows if it'll crack, too. Wait 1-2 months and then the first users should report cracks - in case it cracks

[Q] Need advice from you Art Owners.

Hi all,
I am currently using an Xperia X10, with unlocked bootloader and a custom rom. Does almost everything i need from a phone, but it can always be faster and better right
Today i stumbled upon a nice offer with an Xperia Arc S. I can also choose a samsung galaxy s plus..
So i have a few questions for you guys:
Do you recommend the arc s? I really like SE for it's build quality and excellent camera. So the samsung is out i think . PLus the Arc S having Android 4.0.
Is the Arc S nicely build?
Battery life? (xperia x10 has 1500mah, but with custom rom it gets trough the day with ease)
I will almost certainly do the same with it as i did with my x10 : rooting the phone and tweak it. So is the arc S an easy phone to edit and root? Are there some nice ICS roms for it? (of course there are )
How about performance? i know it is not the best phone on the market, you could even call it an "older" model. Adreno 205 is a good GPU isn't it?
And is the camera really as good as Sony claims it is? Yeah i am not comparing it to my dslr (SonyD) Alpha A500), but can you make some nice pictures with it.
Or should i just pay a bit more and go for Xperia S
I have been using my x10 for 2 years now, don't know if i will do the same with the arc S. But the offer is so good that i could even sell the phone and still don't pay more than with my current Sim-Only.
I hope i get some answers from you guys. Information from users is much more valuable than everything i read on the net. Reviews are generally pretty positive.
Greets, and thanks in advance
I would go for the Xperia S personally, the arc is great but the lack of RAM and memory make it often frustrating to use. Multitasking is a pain because you'll find that you leave an app, come back to it and it will have closed most annoying on the browser. Also once you install a decent amount of apps on it you do start to notice it lag.
It is a great phone, as long as you're a light user. Going back to my arc from my Xperia S you do notice this more. That said it is a good update from the X10 which is very sluggish with 2.3, but if you want something much better and more future proof I would recommend at least a phone with 1GB RAM and a dualcore processor.
I don't have an arc s, I have an arc. I previously used an x10 though and the arc is worlds better (even with similar specs). The rom community for the arc is also very active so you'll likely find exactly what you need for your usage.
That said, adsada is right; if you can swing it I would get a newer xperia phone, but if the deal on the arc s really is a good one I can't see any reason not to grab it. Just expect to use your phone like a phone, not a computer
if u buy arc s you are going 10 months behind with u see the config..but the looks are still futuristic..one of the best looking phone. but only drawback is its RAM..if u want your phone to survive jelly beans load and want to stick to it atleast for 1-1.5 years then i think your btr go for xperia s..
i have 3 smartphones..i see my defy as a rough & tough man..i see my SGS2 as a big corporate man with suit blazers..but when i see my arc s i see her as a sexy victoria secret model ..
BTW this is general section...Questions should go into Q & A section..
The build quality is good.
The battery life...hmmmmm.. I am still waiting for the phone that last more than 1 day in heavy use. Still, with the right ROM and settings, it lasts about 10h (and by heavy duty I mean HEAVY DUTY, used at least 6h out of 10 - music, internet (data), gaming, etc)
Camera is good. I had nothing to complain about.
The RAM and internal memory is indeed a drawback. Still, some workarounds can be found with the right ROM and app configurations.
If you want it mainly for the design.. go for it, it is great!
If you are more interested in force than in beauty... go for Xperia S.
Thanks for the answers.
Yeah the offer is pretty nice, but i think i will wait a bit and buy something a bit more high performance.
Looks of the Art S are the best though, i really think there isn't a better looking phone on the market right now.
Lack of Ram is something the X10 has too. Really irritating sometimes, but after some modding you can run it pretty fast.
But i really like to tweak things, and i like technically advanced stuff. So it is probably better to buy something different.
Don't know if i stay with sony though.. Samsung galaxy S2 is getting a lot cheaper fast here. So that probably is a lot value for many. I hate touchwich, so that one will be modded for sure
i have an Arc S, to be honest i prefer the Galaxy. Arc S is good but when it comes to updates i think ICS will be the last update this phone will ever taste (porting will help but some stuff might not work)
maybe newer ver of android requires a bigger memory (RAM) ICS is kinda slow on this phone but Modding helps speed it up.
im an arc user also..
work in a mobile section been exploring all high end phones
just my own opinion and what ive experience
sony - camera / visual(your screen) / audio
those criteria sony will have great advantage towards other brands
but speed xperia s dual core old architecture cpu,
s4 dual core phones will swallow it alive
im planning also to change my phone maybe other brand
i used my arc for almost a year now and the ram just cant handle it
got an Samsung Galaxy S2 and an Sony Arc S. have to say, the RAM on the Arc is really a problem, but the camera is way better than on the Samsung :-D
currently I´m trying AOKP on my Arc S, just to see if it handles the RAM really better than Stock
so for you: get a device with more RAM and nice optics ;-) but you probably won´t be disappointed with the Arc S.
... If you want a upgrade from x10 go for sony S http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_s-4369.php, it is a bit expensive now, but if you wait a little it will be a good upgrade.

What you think about xperia S

Hii guys .. I'm a x10 user and I'm going to upgrade for a new phone but I have to chose betwen S3 and xperia S
So what you think about your xperia S and does it have a official miui fully working ??

MIUI is fully working, but comparing the SGS3 to the XPS is just wrong. This phone is closer to the SGS2.

but comparing the SGS3 to the XPS is just wrong: only in benchmark.. same resolution screen, with better color screen (imho), better audio (walkman v sgs3's stock , imho), better camera (again, imho, the camera hardware though, ), and of course the lightbar
bigger battery (and easily removable too) and bigger storage is nice though but the different in battery only bout 1 hour (with same usage) and i think the 32 gB is just enough (u can always use usb-otg)
and i havent found any mali mp400 only games, yet there are some qualcomm's adreno-only game (but if u're not using adreno, u can buy and use chainfire3d )
and u need usb-jig to go to sgs3 download mode.. got me in panic mode when i was modding my friend's new sgs3
so.. your choice
SE (or Sony) came to the market with a inferior product, I m talking about dual core processor and it is S3 not even S4, and 6-10 months late.
On top of it
1. Hardware is just wrong, capacitative buttons are not responsive. It is a basic requirement, dammit. And what good does that transparent bottom does?
2. They advertised 1GB ram and now i came to realize (bought it only 3 days ago) that it is only 634mb ram and 450mb is almost always full with Sony crap running all the time. I had to freeze apps using Titanium to make sure i have enough memory for my apps.
3. Camera is not SE good. I own Xperia neo and SGS2 and i feel SXS camera is inferior to both.
4. Neither Bravia nor Xloud is working good. Low sound on in call speaker volume.
5. Sony fills your phone with all their junk which you ll never gonna use but have to pay for it with RAM. Also you cannot mount as USB connection on MAC as you ll need Sony Bridge for MAC and if you use it you cannot use Android File transfer provided by Google. Sony Bridge is crap as file transfer is at awful speed. (Again comparing to SGS2 which has mount as USB for ICS as well).
6. Screen has washed out colors and 720p doesnt feel any good. Even LG and Asus has better screens. I had LG optimus 2X and own Transforme prime.
7. Non removable battery and no option for micro SD. If you have non removable battery at least put higher capacity battery or make software good that battery lasts long.
8. And yeah it costs as much as HTC one x or SGS3.
May be i ll have something good to say after few weeks of use.
-K
It's OK. First of all, it sucks to go into a phone store and only found 1-2-3 different cases for the phone. SGS3 got alot more cases to choose from.
Second, yelloy tint problem many phones got, including mine (!).
Third, the sucky battery. It drains sooo fast.
Also very little available memory after ICS upgrade.
So its a OK phone, not that good and not that bad.

Go for S3, it is a better phone than Xperia S in all the ways possible (maybe the screen is a matter of taste, but the rest...). Battery, GPU, CPU, Sound Quality (yes, sound quality, the chip that Samsung uses are really better, the sound of Xperia S is just OK, to be true it is worse than my old ex-phone, LG Optimus Black), camera (8MPX vs 12 MPX, its true, but the camera is more sharp, and dont make noise like Xperia S camera, imo a unacceptable noise), etc. The community is just huge! I don't want to diminish my fellow comrades, but Xperia S community is really small and with devs shortage (not complaining). I just have it because its the best phone i could get for free from my carrier. Not a bad phone, but far from be a incredible phone. In fact, it is not incredible in any area, but competent in almost all except battery (and maybe cam). A good phone and just it, a good phone.
Press thanks if i helped, please.
Reasons I prefer the Xperia S over SGSIII. Note that these are mostly subjective.
1) Xperia Timescape and Walkman apps. No TouchWiz. (moot point if you flash custom ROMs, but there goes the warranty)
2) Sharper, more color-accurate screen. SGSIII screen is greenish and fake-looking due to AMOLED.
3) Better physical build. I find Samsung phones to feel cheap and plasticky.
4) Looks better (according to my brother, the SGSIII is awesome because it looks so generic that any case looks good on it...?)
5) microHDMI + microUSB vs MHL.
6) Cheaper - in NZ. Xperia S is ~$600, SGSIII is ~$850, so it's a significant difference.

I have a lot of issues with the phone but I'm sorry you are on your own with all that. The xperia s is no where near as bad as you make it.
It's display is the best available. Viewing angles mean nothing in every day use and it's one of the best in direct sunlight which has more value. The camera is also the best available. It's not for point and shooting and so you need to take more time to get the best pictures but those pictures are the best of any smartphone. No phone has all ram available to the user do don't know what you're on about. The sensitivity of the capacity buttons are too low but I've used other phones where they have been too high and you keep hitting them inadvertently. You knew it had all its internals sealed in before you got so what's your beef and no it doesn't cost as much as other high end phones.
Back to OP, the GS3 is faster and smoother but not by a long way in real world performance. Just benchmarks much higher.
I'd say, go down to the phone shop and try out both before making up your mind.
Having said don't choose the Sony under any circumstances if android software is a big deal for because in that department Sony are notoriously very poor. Their ICS update was later than all their major competitors and is far from ready. It needs a lot of work still doing to it. It's slower than gingerbread with a lot of slowdowns and glitches here and there.

The Xperia S has very harsh treble and meh mids with the stock Walkman player on default equalizer settings, but it can easily be tuned to sound as good as a dedicated Walkman player.
I have an old S series Walkman and prefer the audio quality of the Xperia S.
I'm using a good pair of Shure IEM and a decent portable amp (not really needed) and the only fault I can find with the audio is that the gsm/3g radio tends to interfere with the sound a bit when I use the shure earphones with the amp.
I had a Galaxy TAB a while ago which has the wolfson dac and I never liked it (don't know about the GS3 but maybe it's improved?), even after tweaking the audio for a long time using Poweramp.
Also, the Sony Walkman app sounds far better than both Winamp pro and poweramp.

Spot on! that's why we should not buy mobiles by reading internet reviews and forums posts.
I'm happy with my Xperia S no complains just enjoying its features. Everyone should be happy they have their own phone too. Sony, Samsung, LG, HTC, iPhone etc.. Whatever brand it is. Just learn how to appreciate what you have. This is just my opinion again I'm enjoying my Xperia S

It has 1gb of ram, the system takes up almost 400mb. Also onex is 100 dollars more while sgs3 is 200 more. If I would get another phone it would be a nexus. Both the other 2 have their issues too.

Well, it depends on what you like/want from your phone:
1) If you want the fastest android till date with earlier software updates/lots of roms along with external memory & replaceable battery: Go for SGS3
2) If you want an android with best camera till date, brilliant screen & eye catching design, and relatively cheaper: Go for SXS
I have been using Xperia S for over 3 months now and am quite pleased with it overall, no major issues so far (except for a few bugs in current ICS build by sony). Also compared it to my friends SGS3 & was pleased to see my SXS almost matching the real world performance of SGS3!
And yes, as aready stated, fully functional/official MIUI is available for SXS (myself currently on MIUI build 2.8.3 which fast, smooth & most stable build so far).
Also, i recommend you to check both of them out at local demo stores and then decide it for yourself!

Galaxy Nexus has its updates the quickest because it is directly from google and it is running vanilla android. It has one of the biggest dev communities and it is easy to unlock the bootloader for it, the gs3 is hard to mod and you need a special usb tool
btw, the xperia s is an amazing phone, it looks great with the lightbar and the performance is great, even with the snapdragon s3, sony knows how to optimize the software for snapdragon chipsets
Xperia S on Gingerbread was great but on ICS its crap...
You will be irritated by the terrible multitasking of Xperia S on ICS...
Its just a software issue n can be fixed...
If you want upto date performance and may be good software support go for SGS3 ..
Go for Sony Xpria S if you care about looks, decent performance (Compared to SGS 3) n can wait for an update to solve the ICS issues on Xperia S..

the galaxy s3 suffers the same multitasking issues of the xs.
if you need apps to remain open without them being closed by the os get a phone with 2gb of ram.
I had a SGS2 last year, went to the Xperia Play, which to be honest was an awesome phone, sucked the bootloader was locked.
Picked up ths SXS last month and I prefer it over the s2.
I have a friend with a s3, I think they are ugly and clunky. Its trying to be a iPhone.
Been flashing roms to find the right one for me, and its seems to be a hard phone to brick.
I use it for my main MP3 player at night (Due to ringing in the ears), it barely looses any battery playing all night.
Headphones sucked a bit, but picked up some Skullcandy and the phone drives them perfectly.
I'd recommend th SXS to anyone.

what do you mean by xperia arc s is not outdated? I mean, is it a good phone?
Go for it...
Well, since you are posting in Xperia Arc/S subforum, I don't know how much "objective" answers you can get, but nevermind, here is my answer.
I bought my Arc S about month and 1/2 ago, and I'm ultra satisfied with this phone, design-wise and function-wise...
I was in love with this phone since it was announced, and now when I own one, I'm in love even more.
What you will get, is one of the most beautifully and originally designed phone on market, if not the most beautiful and original. I'm afraid that this is the last brave and risk-taking design in smartphone market, but only time will tell.
Hardware-wise, you will get a little bit outdated hardware (heh, who could imagine year ago that we will speak about 1.4GHz mobile processors as "outdated"), but capable enough to run Gingerbread ultra smoothly, and to run recent ICS updates tolerably fast. After all, you will have phone with official SONY branded ICS, and it will not feel outdated at all. I don't know how big your budget is, but my vote goes for Arc S, as it is killer design-wise, and to me it looks much better than new NXT Xperia 2012 line.
Its a nice phone
At the same price you can find a galaxy s 2...choose that, there is a really more active ROM development support...
Then I own an arc s...and for gaming is ****. The same games work flawlessly on the galaxy s 2...

Hey.. I also switched to SE from Nexus S.. And I can tell you, you wont be happy with Xperia 2011 family.. Its got the same hardware as Nexus S and is a bit outdated. Also the development is far less in these devices than we find in the Nexus Forum.. You'll better chose Galaxy Nexus which comes with the same price tag as the Arc/S..

Pros: The best designed phone out there. No manufacturer (not even Sony) can come up with such a beauty ever again.
Music is great, Sound output is terrific and in-call sound is audible even in noisy environments.
OS look and feel is terrific and it offers plenty of features (DLNA, HDMI, built in panaroma) that many phones lack.
Cons: Hardware. The OS is painfully slow. Even gingerbread is not upto the mark. many on this forum have completely forgotten that the contact/messaging hangups occured in 2.3 as well. After ICS update, the phone became terribly laggy that we started believing that GB worked well. Trust me, once you fill up your phone memory with apps, the phone will die from inside! Ever wonder why people run after custom ROMS even though Sony's official UI offers more features?
Camera: Still camera is decent but the phone is just not made to shoot HD videos. Give it a pass. With ICS update, camera performance has degraded.
Final words. Go get yourself a phone with latest hardware. Sony Xperia S/P may not look as pretty from outside but they do exceptionally well from inside. The UI is new and phone supports many other features (All 3.5mm headphones are supported/NFC etc etc).
If your budget allows, try HTC One X, Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S3.
Or wait for the 2012-13 series of Xperia phones with S4 processor.

Looks like Sony have answered your/our prayers! the new Xperia line has arc design and better build quality and the benchmarks are now showing them as better performers than most flagships out there. The Dual Core S4 has an upper hand over Quad Cores. Go get yourself an Xperia T/TX. Xperia V is overpriced.
No one can beat Sony in design!
+1 , Xperia TX has the same design as Arc S (well at least it is curved as the Arc S) and its processor looks to be promising !!
Will be my next phone by the way, just waiting for it to reach the market ^^
I agree totally with everything you said,it might not be the newest phone but it's so customizable!!, keeping it up to date.

i don't really play much
Then go for Arc S. Problem solved...
You won't find prettier phone.
I have a newest Ics update and i's not slow or laggy. Camera quality compared to gb is better ( sony resolved over compression problem ), video is the same, only audio is worse cause mono but i's not a big difference. I'm not a game player so for me it's a decent upgrade after htc desire...
