Archos G9 101 Turbo 250GB UPGRADE HDD to SSD STEP by STEP - Gen9, Gen10 General

The HDD version of Archos G9 (example A101H) can be upgraded to SSD or a bigger HDD!
First try:
I have used a 1.8'' Samsung 128GB SSD (microSata) with adapter to Sata 2.5'' and 3.3V.
The UPGRADE works fine!
Second try:
720GB HDD 2,5" 9mm device.
Upgrade works fine with one little issue.
The HDD is thicker then the original so there is a small spot on the screen from the pressure. It is only visible at black or white screens.

Original HDD details:
Seagate Momentus Thindrive 256GB 2,5" 8mm

FAQ
FAQ:
# Why SSD?
No mechanic inside.
No annoying sound from it.
Less battery consumption.
Less heat.
No on/off delay.
More speed (full SSD speed is not supported).
# Why 1.8''?
Because it takes only ~1,0W when active instead of 2,5W with an 2.5'' HDD device. The battery should hold much longer.
It makes the heavy device a little bit lighter.
Attention: This devices work with 3,3V. You will need an 2,5'' adapter which will make this. Because SATA gives 5V. (ebay 12€)
# Can I use any Sata 2.5 device?
Yes you can use Sata, Sata2, Sata3.
But not @ full speed.
Watch the Voltage Supply need to be 5V.

Step by Step Guide
HowTo step by step
S0
- You need a Torx T5/T6 screwdriver.
- Don't buy a SSD which is to big. Watch the size before buy. (better buy a thin drive)
- There is no significant speed raise with SSD!
- Drive current has to be 5V. (3.3V only with active adapter)
- I am not responsible for any damage on your device and your self. So work carefully and open your eyes.
S1
Shut down your device.
Remove power supply and USB cable!
Open the 4 screws on the backside with a Torch 5 Screwdriver.

}
S2
Open carefully the clips with a flat screwdriver. They are all around on the 4 sides of the Archos.
DON'T BREAK them!
S3
Flip the side with the display away let it stand in a position of ~90°.
(Because one cable is a little bit to short. If you want to lay it completely you have to remove this cable first.)
S4
Put the long battery away from the HDD.
You need the space for the next step.
S5
Remove 2 screws over the HDD
and
2 on the side, where the long battery was.
S6
Remove the foil near by the SATA connector.
Put the HDD out.
S7
Pre-Format your new HDD or SSD with EXT4 (EXT3 will work too)
Use a partition tool like EaseUS Free Edition.
Or use a Ubuntu Live CD/USB if you want to transfer your files from your old HDD to the new one.
S8
Do the steps S6 till S3 reversed.
S9
Start your Archos and check if all works fine.
Ckeck the memory in system menu.
Transfere some big files.
If all works fine, do steps S2 & S1 reversed.
If the SSD is not recognized, format it in Repair menu (you will find it in settings)
S10
Hope i could help some of the people who wants to make the device a lot better.
Post your Quadrant scores and Battery consumption here together with your HDD type if you want.

great i waiting that

Can't wait to see the quadrant scores.
Can't wait to see the quadrant scores. Thanks for the tutorial.

I would be more interested by the change in the power consumption saved by this change ?
Any comparison between the autonomy before and after ??

I have to wait till the active adapter arrives to me. then I can post this two things.

Any advice on how not to break them?
I'm going to open mine the next days, to do some research on the technical side (as usual)
I got the flash version not the HDD variant, but the housing should be very similar i guess. At least there seems to be only one screw.
Keep on your nice work!!

Use a small flat screwdriver and compare my fotos with you devive to find out where the clips are. Then pull the side upwards with the screwdriver don't push the clips with the nose down. Sorry my English is not the best hope you can understand what I mean. Good luck and don't use to much power.

Before I opened the device I saw some pictures from others. It seems that we could sold another ram chip on the side. So after I opened it I saw that my device isn't the same as I saw on the pictures.
Think this can't be done.

Don't Expect better battery or speed...
I tested battery drop after in 3 different gen 9 archos...one with original, one with a massive 1TB, one with M4 SSD...
No significant battery improvements...Giving it's not scientific test but still.
Every time I measured battery after one how of playing video and always had a drop of around 25% to 27% in both of them..
I also tried a hybride SSD/HDD seagate and same thing.
So please do the SSD replacement for other reasons; quite operation, less, heat, less weight, less failure. As af as speed and power consumption not very much to gain acording to my tests.
The only explanation may well be that since Archos is already pairing Flash to HDD and caching...the HDD is turned off as needed. Ran seveal speed test reading and writing...and did not see much change...I guess it'all just go thru the cache flash used by the HDD versions of Archos.
That was my experience. I reverted back to my 1Tb HDD..No gain for me with an expensive HDD. The hDD is very cheap and if it fails I can still replace it just like that.

Thank you to share your experience with us.
Could you give some technical data from the different drives you try?
One important data is Ampere and the second is Volt. As you can see in first post it is not high with the original drive (2.5W). But with a drive which will use only 1W it must be a less battery consumption.

Just thought to give a comment on that, to avoid confusion:
In our Gen9 devices RAM is soldered as PoP on top of the CPU.
These chips could not be easily replaced.
The free footprint your are talking of is only present on the mainboard of the S models (flash based devices). In theory you could place a second NAND chip on these solder pads to increase flash memory.
On the H models (HDD based devices) this area is used for the USB2SATA logic.
Please do not mix up RAM and NAND based memory, this often leds to confusion.
Cheers,
scholbert

I tested an Archos 101 G9 with the original drive. Tech Specs are the same you mentioned above...Seagate Momentus Thins 5200 RPM...8MB cache. ALso G9 80 Original Drive. Then I replaced in them my 1 TB drive Samsung pinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB 1TB. Checked the drop in battery % after one hour of playing the same video. Then I tried the same thing with Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Hybrid Drive Review (ST750LX003). I did not notice a difference in speed test performed by SDTester app and same with power consumption after playing the same video.
In my research Samsung SSD 830 and Crucial m4 are some of the best. with quality and performance. I was going to buy the 512 mb M4 Before I do so I bought the 64gb version...( Crucial 64 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT064M4SSD2) replaced that and did the same test...with no significant difference in battery drop. Even speed did not change...(which I expect since the Archos tablet is always going thru it's flash caching for reading and writing.) I wa more looking for power consumption. M4 is a 2.5 SSD with lower power needs the Hdd and have the below listed specs:
Power Consumption (Idle)
< 65 mW
Power Consumption (Active)
0.15W
Operating Temperature
0°C ~ +70°C
Storage Temperature
-40°C ~ +85°C
Max Shock Resistance
1500G

I tested my device now for a few days with the new SSD (1.8'' 128GB).
My impression is:
- nearly no loading times
- no heat building
- better battery life (standby 3 days, videoplay 5hours, mixed use about 10hours)
- device is lighter but the heaviest things are the 2 batteries.

Do 9mm 2.5" drives fit into the case alright ?
As the original 250GB drive is 7mm, I was wondering whether there was enough room ?

Yes they fit, but not perfectly. After put it in i have some screen issues. Like flikering backlight touching the screen and on black or white Backgrounds a light ugly circle which comes from the pressure the 9mm device do.

Several Chinese apps. Some of them installing other Chinese apps. (removed/disabled, except for tUI and TeclastAutoUpdater)
No Apps drawer. no widgets - Apple-like UI. (Apex Launcher installed)
Overall feeling of money well spent
Current problems
I've found two things that I don't like about the tablet:
First, the speakers. I can't complain about sound - there's some bass, highs are clear, overall quality is good. But it eludes me why would someone place two speakers on the same side?
Second, and hopefully, temporary one, is the battery meter. From 0% it goes to 100% in about 20 minutes (BTW, the tablet pulls 2A out of the bundled PSU), says "charging 100%", for few hours more the current is still 2A, then 1.5A for some time, then 1A (somewhere here its starts to say "Charged"), and after 8 hours, when the current was 0.2A, I've disconnected the cord. "Bleep! Connect the charger! 10%" After an hour of use, I turned it of, then on... 77%! Went down to 8% after an hour more, then to 7% in another hour... :silly: A firmware update is definitely needed here. BTW, in 2 days I own the thing, I've had 2 updates, so the manufacturer's developers are doing something.
--- Update 2014-08-01
I've got the POWER!
The bad news are - (1) technical support does not answer emails, at least in my experience.. Probably because of language difficulties, maybe they have some other reasons. (2) replacement batteries are hard to find - on ali express I found only one seller who claims his batteries are 12Ah. The good news is - I did not need all of that. Finally, I've decided to open the thing up and check all accessible connection points.
Disassembly
You'll need a sharp tool (there are special plastic tools, but I used regular small knife to start, and a plastic one from ikea to widen and crack on the initial opening). Back cover is snapped on over the screen base on small latches, and all you need to do is slit the groove that goes around the screen a little, then go on unlatching until it comes apart. The groove is just around the screen, between two plastic parts, not around the metal cover.
All I needed to do was tracking the battery wire, lifting black tape, and re-plugging the wire in its place. Full battery power is now restored. Feeling are mixed -- or ?

sensors??
Hi, Im considering about this tablet but there is a small question that I wanna know before purchasing which is how many sensors this device has, does it has e compass and gyroscope as well as gravity sensors? Would you mind checking it for me?
Thanks in advance!

I am attaching AnTuTu test results, the last one says there is no G-Sensor, or compass, only Acceleration and Light sensors. However my seller indicated that there is gravity sensor, so there is a possibility (I hope) that it will appear after some magical firmware update.
tPad
They call it a tPad as a takeoff of the iPad I have had mine now for almost 3 weeks with very little trouble. I have not noticed the battery thing but I will keep an eye out for it. Yeah a bit strange about the speakers but what are you going to do. I have had 2 updates so far also. You can get Windows 8.1 on it now but it is a bit of a pain from what I can see to install from the factory website and doing a Google translate. Here is the link for the x98 forum. http://bbs.teclast.com/forum.php?mod=forumdisplay&fid=48 I think there is a new way to install Windows coming on the 15th. For the money ( I paid 1149 RMB-about $185 USD on Taobao when it first came out) I think you can't beat it. Great speed, great screen, 3G and I think it will be able to dual boot soon. Hope they get 4.4 on it soon
Hdmi
I'm looking for a tablet and this gives me good vibes HDMI its important for mi could somebody guarantee me that if this tablet has this port?
And another question, when W8.1 comes up officially, does it has a dual boot or we can only use an OS?
Nice review!

If you dont need GPS & 3G
Best Choice is Onda V975I
Becuse Onda is The best company in firmware support
For example Huawei Never released any new Firmware For MediaPad 10 FHD ( good hardware )
But
Onda every month release New version of android for their product

Dude, I have the Onda V975M and let me tell you something about Onda... Their firmware SUCK... It's so much bugged that they have to release several updates... But the worse thing is that the bugs keep coming back every other update and you feel that nothing has really improved...
Another thing is that they are liers... They cheat at Antutu... They claim the CPU runs at 2.0Ghz (for the V975M) but the frequency is NEVER used by the system, except for cheating at Antutu benchmark...
They don't release source code, so you can't unlock the frequencies on kernel or have code modification for building better custom roms, or for the community to fix their mess...
The only reason they release so many updates is that they launch the product so early that their first ROMs leave the tab quite unusable, with system lag, rebooting, WiFi and sd card disconnection when tab sleeps... having to reboot tab to reconnect WiFi every time it sleeps and much more terrible bugs...
Not to mention the update procedure, that has 50% chance of hard bricking your tab... another thing: it doesn't have download mode and Sd card booting doesn't work after bricking...

That is very likely true for the moment - many games come with binary optimized code for ARMv7 32-bit architecture, while this one is Intel x64 and just started to appear on low-cost devices. But I would expect things to get (much) better in a few months. I also think there might be a possibility that gaming could be a lot better with some games under the (extra-cost) Windows OS.

[Review] DOOGEE X5 Pro - A $85 best buy

Doogee is a relatively new Chinese company, but has no difficulty with introducing innovations onto the mobile phone market through its products. Founded in early 2013, the company is yet to really develop a big fan base, but is quickly gathering attention with its merchandise offering excellent features in its price range. Every year smartphone market presents new models better than the year before for a lower price. This trend is also followed by small companies like Doogee, which has recently come out with its X5 Pro model.
You must be wondering what makes this model so special. Well, it offers amazing features for the price of only $85 – 5.0” display, 64-bit Quad-Core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, 2 cameras, 2400mAh battery and Android 5.1 Lollipop! You are interested, aren’t you? It’s OK, so am I.

Upon opening the box on the side, you can pull out the content of the box – phone, charger, USB cable and short manual. A protective foil is already on the phone, so its new owner doesn’t have to go through the trouble of applying it himself.
The charger is standard, with a generic shape and specifications of 5V 700mA. However, it would surely be better if the manufacturer had provided a charger of at least 1A to shorten the charging period.
The USB cable given with the phone could be used for phone-PC data transfer as well as for charging – it is not limited only to the charging capacity.
The short manual covers the basics of Android OS use, and thus will be useful only to the beginners in the Android world.
The 2400mAh battery is already inside the phone when the buyer gets it, but before he starts using it, he needs to remove the protective foil off of it, as is specified on the box.
The absence of stereo headphones from the package implies that the manufacturer wanted to lower the price as much as possible, which will not bother most of new users, since they will already have headphones of their liking.
AppearanceDoogee X5 Pro has a simple design and the model we received for the purpose of this test is completely black (there is also a black-and-white combination). It is considered to be a phone of average thickness (8.2mm), but you can “feel” it in the hand because of its weight of as much as 130 grams. The battery cover takes most of the phone’s frame, thus in a way protecting it in case of falling on one of its edges.
On the top side of the phone there are connecting ports – a micro USB port (for charging, as well as PC and peripheral devices connection) and a 3.5mm audio connector for headphones.
On the right side there are buttons for sound control and turning the screen on and off. They are very sturdy, well responsive and have a distinguishable click, which makes us think they will endure usage for long period of time.
Microphone and speaker openings are on the bottom side of the phone. As far as sound is concerned, it is very loud and reproduced in satisfactory quality, so the phone can be clearly heard even if it is carried in its own case.
The biggest part of the front side is occupied by a 5.0” display. Even though there was available space for the control buttons to be on the screen itself, the manufacturer decided to place the capacitive buttons (Menu, Home and Back) below the screen. This is a better option for some users, since the entire screen is available at all times, while others will be asking why the buttons aren’t on the screen, since it will additionally make the phone smaller. Unfortunately, capacitive buttons aren’t backlit, which makes them hard to see and use in the dark.
Above the screen you can see the front 2Mpix camera, proximity and light sensors, as well as the speaker opening. In-call sound quality is clear and loud, even in the middle of the sound control bar.
The battery cover is smooth to the touch, but covered in rubber-like plastic in order to prevent slipping and allowing better handling of the phone. Perfectionists will be bothered by the fact that the phone will constantly be covered in finger prints, and so they will have to wipe it with a cloth regularly.
In the upper section of the phone there is a 5Mpix camera, not far from the flash LED. In addition, under that exact spot the Doogee logo is discretely, but clearly visible.
The battery cover is firmly attached to the front of the phone, so we advise careful removal so as not to damage the cover holders, although it is our opinion that they are flexible enough not to break quite so easily.
Upon cover removal you can see the blue 2400mAh battery, above which there are 2 SIM slots (both Micro-SIM sized), as well as the slot for a microSD memory card capacity up to 32GB. In order to access these slots, it is necessary to remove the battery from its setting.
The SIM slots are numbered 1 and 2, but that in no way determines which of the cards will be the primary one, since the user himself can choose which card to use for calling, messaging, surfing the mobile Internet (4G!), etc.
The phone’s surface looks impressive even though this is a budget phone. Yes, there are small traces of plastic injection near microUSB port opening and 3.5mm audio port, but it is barely noticeable and in no way diminishes the beauty of the phone. It is a pity that X5 Pro is missing the notification LED, since it would eliminate the need to turn the screen on in order to check for any missing calls or text messages.
DisplayDoogee X5 Pro comes with IPS 5.0” display with 720p resolution (1280x720 pixels). This makes it a very good choice for a screen of this diagonal, because the pixel density is high enough so that the image is as clear as it can be expected although there are phones with much higher resolution on today’s market. We have secretly feared that colors would seem washed out while the visibility angles would be narrow, but that is not the case at all in X5 Pro. Color intensity is fairly good, whilst image rendition stays the same until viewing in extremely sharp angles. The manufacturer states that the phone comes with Gorilla Glass display protection, but it remains untested in that aspect.
Screen reacts to the touch very well and it’s responsive in 2 points at the same time, that’s enough for most uses, including playing games. The only problem we noticed it’s that it reacts a bit unprecise when fingers are too close to each other, that makes a pinch-to-zoom gesture a bit difficult.
Back lighting can be very intense, which makes the displayed content visible even in direct sun.
SoftwareWhat is interesting is that Doogee X5 Pro comes with Android 5.1 (Lollipop) OS, which means the phone is adorned with both good hardware and optimized software. Software appearance and its functions do not differ excessively from Google source code, although there are certain additional phone setting functions offering further possibilities.
Android 5.1 has finally brought dual SIM native support, so manufacturers have no need to create their own solution to the “problem” of selecting SIM cards in lie with each situation. When a SIM-using app is run (Dialer, Messaging, Hangouts, etc.), notification menu displays the possibility to choose which SIM card will be used at that point. It is also possible to predetermine the use for each card, further simplifying the entire process.
It is possible to turn on certain gestures to facilitate phone use, such as flipping the phone onto the screen in order to silence ringing, answering a call by lifting the phone a bit more quickly, or simply switching to speakerphone and back by bringing the phone closer to the ear.
What is more, the phone has the option of turning on with a double display touch (Double-tap to Wake), sliding down on the screen while turned off in order to quickly run the camera, or writing on the screen to run apps like dialer, Internet browser, Play store, messenger, etc.
The “Visitor mode” solves the problem many have been dealing with since the appearance of mobile phones – denying access to certain parts of the phone. By activating this particular mode, you can hide call lists, SMS messages, pictures and disable modification of main screens on the phone. This is an excellent option to activate before lending your phone to a friend. However, in order to turn this option on and off, you need to enter your PIN.
Similar effect can be achieved by means of “AppLock” app, which does exactly what its name indicates – locks apps, and provides access upon entering the PIN.
Moreover, the proximity sensor also has certain phone management functions. By waving your hand above the sensor, you can scroll pictures, shuffle songs, take photos, change pages in launcher, unlock the phone and answer a call. As to how smart of an idea this is, we will let you decide.
More advanced users will like the built-in option of controlling app permissions (Permission Manager), which means that any app can be simply revoked the permission to dial, send messages, read location, access contacts, use camera, etc.
All in all, Doogee X5 Pro has left a favorable impression as far as OS and additional apps are concerned. Thanks to Android 5.1 OS, animations are beautiful and fluid, transition between apps is fast (for which large RAM memory can be credited, 2GB) and there wasn’t even an instance of unexplainable lag. With basic preinstalled apps installed, only 500MB RAM is occupied, thus leaving a lot of space for installing and multitasking between large numbers of apps.
CameraAs previously stated, Doogee X5 Pro on its back has a 5Mpix camera (interpolated to 8Mpix) with very limited possibilities, while on the front it carries a 2.0Mpix camera for video chats.
The 5Mpix camera has autofocus, LED flash and makes 2560x1920 pixel pictures without interpolation.
Camera sensor possibilities are quite poor. While colors are good in the daylight, it lacks detail even while taking photos with a steady hand. Photos seem good on the screen, but when zoomed to their original size, there is a visible lack of sharpness and “oil-on-canvass” effect. Photos of closer objects are satisfactory in sharpness, but most landscapes make you want to give up the sport. This is quite a shame, since the camera software has interesting options such as automatic photographing by lifting 2 fingers in the shot, automatized following of an object and taking its picture, recording “live” (making a 5-second long video with a photographing effect) and the Face beauty mode, which removes skin imperfections and makes you more pretty (the fare sex loves this option in Samsung phones).
Photo samples:
Battery LifeDoogee X5 Pro comes with a 2400mAh battery, which is enough capacity to allow the phone one-day autonomy with more intensive use. Seeing how the processor is economical and works on lower frequency, battery consumption is moderate. We have measured its autonomy by inserting 2 SIM cards into the phone (one in the 3G/4G mode and the other in the 2G mode) and running synthetic tests, making a few shorter phone calls (about 20 minutes in total), taking pictures outside for about an hour and a half (during which time mobile Internet was active), testing its speed of access to the 4G network, and then surfing the Internet using WiFi connection.
During all that, the screen was on for 4 hours and 30 minutes, while the phone was off the charger for 30 hours! We believe this to be an excellent score considering all this phone’s features.
PerformanceDoogee X5 Pro is based on MediaTek MT6735 64-bit chipset which is increasingly present in lower-middle class models. MT6735 has a Quad-Core processor at 1GHz (988MHz, to be more precise), Mali-T720 graphic chip and 2GB of built-in RAM memory.
The processor is probably intentionally limited to lower frequency instead its maximum (1.3GHz) in order to provide a better battery autonomy, since it has proven to be quite economical and still powerful enough for most users’ needs. Judging by synthetic tests, MT6735 chipset at 1GHz frequency performs in the rank of Snapdragon 400 chipset and its Quad-Core processor, which is an excellent trait considering the price of X5 Pro phone.
It also has built-in USB OTG option, so it is possible to connect USB flash drive or USB mouse or keyboard directly to the phone using USB OTG adapter.
Obtaining GPS location on this phone is quick and precise, since it easily finds a large number of satellites and connects to most of them in 30 seconds. Therefore, it can definitely be used as GPS navigation with matching navigation software.
Benchmark tests results:
ConclusionDoogee X5 Pro is a smart phone which has suddenly appeared on the market and attracted a lot of attention with its surreal hardware for a good price. Its IPS display with wide visibility angles and quality rendition will allow undisturbed use in all conditions, while its work speed will satisfy all less and moderately demanding users. If you want an affordable smartphone and you can look past a few smaller cons, there is no reason to be apprehensive – you should definitely take the X5 Pro model into consideration as best buy in the lower price range!
Pros:
Good quality display
Fast response
4G LTE support
Powerful speaker
Cons:
No notification LED
Capacitive buttons unlit
No gyroscope and g-sensor
Once more, big thanks to Pandawill for providing a sample device for testing.

Great review, thanks.
Could it be possible to overclock the CPU to 1.3 GHz when the device is rooted?
I saw one review (here) that had an Antutu benchmark of around 30000. It is an early review (August 30th), so perhaps it was an early demo phone that was clocked higher?
You're welcome.
I think it can't be overclocked. Not with the stock kernel, anyway. To phone runs cool, even with the maximum CPU load (about 30C), so I do think the CPU has potential to withstand OC to ~1.2GHz, but there isn't a way at the moment.
As I detailed in this now closed thread, I am unable to get this phone to operate at anything faster than 2G network speeds. The specs of this phone would appear to keep it out of the 4G (or even 3G) range for AT&T in the USA, and indeed, most every other USA carrier I'm aware of. Such a sadness because this is really a nice phone at such a good price.
Excellent phone
Ive had this phone for about 3 weeks now.
Its an awesome phone for the money.
Im not a fan of how branded companies charge huge profit margins like HTC and samsung.
This phone has all I need.
It has 3G and 4G LTE which work great in my country (New Zealand).
In fact the antenna is very strong compared to my old samsung.
The camera is fine for me at 5MP, the autofocus works well and ive been able to take some really nice pics, better than the ones in the review above. Closeups are excellent. If you hold down the shutter button you get something like 6 to 7 shots per second which are then saved as a progression of pics that are then viewable in gallery as a kind of gif animation with each frame been able to be used as a photo. Theres tons of features built in. I really like that no tweaking is needed out of the box.
I installed Hola launcher as I just like its style, its faster than stock launcher and organizes apps into easy folders and it has built in weather and intuitive interface that works really well with this phone.
Ive always bought phones with hardware buttons. I cant stand phones with on screen buttons. It just takes away from everything.
So much nicer having real buttons.
Im happy there is no notification LED. This used to annoy me on my samsung and my smart 4 especially at night time I dont like any flashing LEDS in my room when im sleeping.
Double tap to wake up is nice and also useful when i have it on my car bracket.
Only cons so far are that OTG doesnt seem to work currently. Im guessing the phone needs to be rooted to use that feature and as others have noted there doesnt appear to be an easy root method as yet.
its a shame it doesnt have gyro because my google cardboard isnt much use, but i guess i can still watch 3d movies with it.
Hey.. good news.. looks like KIngroot have updated their app because I just opened kingroot and it says 92 requests received and a strategy is been worked out, which is better than last week. I will try to root manually anyway today. Id really like OTG access.

OTG works fine for me. I'm just using a bog-standard OTG adapter and a FAT32-formatted USB thumbdrive.
I'm still looking forward to a working root though.

Ok maybe my home made OTG cable is the problem.. i just used my data cable with a female to female adaptor on the end.. mayb e that doesnt actually work?
[FIXED] used a correct OTG cable and its all working great! no need to root this phone for any reason now!
I don't know why the rooting thread has been locked, but rooting and installing TWRP is really easy:
Follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63173937&postcount=9
Download TWRP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63232390&postcount=26
Flash TWRP recovery (step 3 onwards): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63263496&postcount=39
I used Rashr to flash TWRP recovery.
Woof
Doesn't work if you have already updated via wireless update.
Phone won't accept the update.zip I you've updated already.
Only via factory reset first. That's our problem.
I stick with a R5 because of rooting problems above that Version.
Ok
OK good to know.. Don't need root at this stage as otg is working now.. Phones still fast so no major advnatge to root for me at present..

Really?
I'm on DOOGEE-X5pro-Android5.1-R08-2015.10.26 and root worked fine.
I had two updates applied from when I received my phone.
Good news, did you had to root again after update?
I rooted for the first time after applying all the updates. Only recently made sense of the rooting thread! Don't know if it'll create problems if there's another update, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

How did you do to root?
I have R08-2015.10.26 but I am unable to root (install supersu)
I followed the procedure of wireless update → select update.zip and click ok. When the phone reboot, it start the install but stops and show "error".

PIPO W1S, 64Bit Windows 10, 4GB 64GB Unboxing & Review

Nowadays, Windows tablet equipped with the Intel processor has become the new mainstream of the current tablet market. In order to meet the habit of the desktop operating system, many of the earlier products will be equipped with a magnetic adsorption keyboard case, while most latest new models began providing direct multi-mode shaft + detachable keyboard design. PIPO W1S is such an equipment, through the specially shaft + keyboard designed, it can be easily transformed into a portable high-performance notebook.
PIPO W1S Tablet Highlights:
Operating system: 64Bit Windows 10
Display: 10.1 inch Screen, 1920*1200 pixels FHD display
CPU: Intel ATOM X5 Cherry Trail Z8300 quad core
Storage: 4GB DDR3L RAM + 64GB eMMC ROM
Cameras: Front 2.0MP + Back 5.0MP
Multi-mode Shafts + Detachable Keyboard Design
Functions:Support Bluetooth/WiFi/OTG/HDMI functions
PIPO W1S General:
Compared with other products which are also carried with Intel Cherry Trail Z8300 processor, W1S breaks the performance limitations, and uses a large-capacity of 4GB RAM memory, even pre-installed 64bit genuine Windows 10 operating system for the first time. The previous models are generally equipped with 32bit Windows operating system, and usually equipped with 2GB RAM, even if some individual models used 4GB RAM, because the 32bit system, it can not be fully identified. PIPO W1S breakthroughs this limitation, and can bring a more fluid operating experience. Moreover, 64GB high capacity disk, USB3.0 standard interface, FHD wide view angle IPS screen, full metal back shell and other configurations are also much more attractive.

PIPO W1S Package:
The package style of the PIPO W1S is similar to its previous products, such as PIPO X9, and the new change is the gift handle holding design, which is more convenient for holding.
PIPO W1S Accessories:
Except for the user manual and warranty card, the most common used accessory in the packing boxes is the charger. This product has a separate DC charging port, not as most of products sharing the same port with the USB port, which is not only more efficient, but also allows USB slot independent. Some previous models will be equipped with conventional OTG adapter cable, for this product, it is not necessary, because it itself is equipped with the standard USB interface, you no need to adapt.
PIPO W1S Appearance:
W1S uses the calm black color with similar style of the past products. 10.1 inch screen, moderate size, as a tablet notebook, it better combined the portability and wide viewing effect.
The back is full-metal shell and surface takes grinding process, making it full of business atmosphere. PIPO W1S has dual cameras, as a Windows tablet, it is more generous.
W1S and the special keyboard is connected through the shaft, weighing about 1kg, screen and keyboard portions each about half the weight. 2kg weight in total, from the perspective of the notebook, in fact, is very portable.
Turning over you can see the back of the keyboard base, at the four corners there is a mat, which itself is a surface treatment process skin sense, when holding up, it is relatively fit for hand.
The total thickness is 2cm when closing the notebook and keyboard
Compared to the conventional magnetic adsorption keyboard base, the new shaft design is more solid, which supports flipping from 0 to 120 degrees, and can live securely.
The silver button on the junction is the buckle switch of the intermediate shaft, after pressing, the switch can be released and the tablet can be taken out individually.
It is the contact design at the connected point, without any pairing, just plug for using.
The metal snaps of both sides can sufficiently to ensure the stability when connected.
Except for the complete keyboard area of the keyboard base, in the upper right there are the caps lock and switch status indicator, which looks very intuitive, and the effect is very similar to using an ordinary notebook.
PIPO W1S has rich interfaces. At the left side, we can see the arrangement is very full, including a standard USB3.0 slot, an HDMI interface, Micro USB port, an earphone port and a recording port. The separate DC power supply is also a major advantage. Moreover, the whole thickness controlled within 1cm while providing a standard USB slot, it is worth praise.
Open shield baffles, there is a hidden TF card slot, the reserved position is for inserting SIM card, maybe it will launch 3G high version later.
Power and volume control bar are located on the left top corner of the fuselage, which matches daily using habit and have a better holding feel.
On both sides of the fuselage, there are speakers, putting effect performance is OK, but the sound is slightly sharp.
PIPO W1S Screen:
10.1 inch 1920 * 1200 pixels IPS panel offers excellent screen performance, whether color or viewing angles, it is basically impeccable. Compared to many low-end notebooks, apparently, the new product evolved from the tablet has more advantages.
PIPO W1S is equipped with genuine 64 Bit Windows10 OS, as we know, 64bit system can better support large memory, and will have a better performance in operating speed. Moreover, the Intel X5-Z8300 processor is also based on the 64bit instruction set, running a 64-bit system can be a complement to each other. However, many similar products on the market are pre-installed 32bit systems, apparently, PIPO done a better job in this. This product can be properly identified the 4GB large memory.
C disk is the storage that comes with system, total of 64GB capacity, except the hidden and invisible part that system has taken, there are more than 45GB can be self-managed, which is considered to be more adequate, not only can store daily applications, but also can load some other games.
Next let's look at the W1S specific hardware information. It adopts Intel Cherry Trail Atom x5-Z8300 processor with four nuclear & four-thread design, and the same 14nm process as Intel Core M processor, default frequency 1.44GHz, which can reach up to 1.84GHz. Consumes only 2W, will save more energy than the previous generation of Intel Bay Trail processor.
315 scores for 3DMark11 graphics test, the smae level with the same program products, nearly half of Core M program model score, while is around 1.5 times of the Intel Bay Trail tablet.
Pipo W1S provides PDF user manual, which is directly put on the desktop, double-click and it can be opened.
It can easily play 1080P online vide without Caton phenomenon, of course, this requires a fast network support. The WiFi reception capacity of the machine is relatively common, you'd better use it with the router at the same time in order to ensure the fluency for watching HD online videos.
Also support some larger touch screen games smoothly, no pressure for running
W1S has dual cameras, 200W pixel front camera + 500W pixel rear main camera. The following figure is a sample of the rear camera, and the camera size is 2560 * 1440 pixels, while the image is common.
As for the power consumption, when running temperature stress test, CPU temperature exceeds 80 degrees, the temperature of the CPU overheating protection is 90 degrees, but the hottest surface temperature is 42 degrees at this time, which is not too hot. Then is the endurance performance, it will be affected by different applications. W1S owns a 3.7V / 6800mAh capacity lithium battery. After fully charged, from 10:00am to 13:50pm power exhausted for playing 1080P video , it lasts nearly four hours, performance is law-abiding.
Verdict:
The overall performance of the PIPO W1S is similar to the products with same program. However, due to the larger 4GB memory and 64-bit system, the performance has improved. Innovative shaft design enriched its usefulness, which can be used as a notebook computer. Last but not the least, the perfect interfaces is also worthy of recognition.

Sir, can you take a tablet with display mode or tent mode?
nice review
4GB RaM is really brutal
I would like to try one but since im in canada and french.. In no ways i can deal with a chinesse support... Only irulu Offer usa support.
Any idea what kind of tablet i can get from usa reseller?
I've just picked up one of these from Gearbest, dual OS version. Parcel seemed undamaged but box inside the packaging was a bit crunched which is odd as the packaging was good - I can only guess it was damaged before packaging. Apart from that it's working fine. First impressions - screen is really nice; keyboard is a chiclet, bit plasticky but the keys are well raised although some are an odd size, eg huge left shift and caps lock. Metal back of the tablet itself feels high quality although strangely huge logos on the back. I ordered black and the box stated black but I received blue - no biggie. PSU looks like a fire waiting to happen - I won't leave it unattended whilst charging as it gets super hot and I will be getting a better PSU from Maplin asap. It's a tiny PSU but it gets so hot it's unreal. So does the tablet whilst charging.
On power up you choose Windows 10 or Android. Android booted cleanly and seemed responsive enough; to switch into Windows mode you hold down the power key and 'Boot into Windows' is one of the options - nicely done, cleaner than the separate 'Boot to Windows app' on the Teclast X89 for example. I'll be doing more testing this weekend hopefully but I'm open to specific questions.
Update - after letting Windows 10 do all it's updates, the touchscreen has developed a kind of schizophrenia. Sometimes it works, sometimes the inputs register incorrectly, mirrored across the horizontal centre of the screen. Driver hunt continues.

Mariom: Are you suggesting that Windows10 should not be permitted to complete any updates as this will cause an issue with the OS? On the Gearbest website there was a notice that indicated no modifications or upgrades to the OS were to be undertaken. Did they mean that Windows10 was not to install updates to the W1S? I have the 2GB/32GB version of this tablet. Thanks.

I suspect it's the dreaded 1511 update which broke my drivers. I have now downloaded the Pipo W1S support package (about 11 700mb zip files which need to be combined) but haven't had time to experiment further. It might even be a restore image. I would suggest that if you can't risk the touchscreen not working, be careful with your updates or perhaps take a drive image, switch on system restore etc etc. I can tell you that the Android part is still working fine so it's not a hw fault.
Update - there seems to be a new version of the BIOS and the Windows 10 image dated 20th June 2016 on the Pipo website. http://www.pipo.cn/En/index.php?m=Product&a=show4&type=2&id=395
The webpage shows 2016-05-10 but the actual Baidu directory contains different fresher files I think. Time for the slow download to commence.

So I have downloaded the stuff and tried the bios and android update went as expected. the windows update however has been unsuccessful, says the recovery partition is damaged and wont boot into the setup.
any suggestions would be grateful. working on alternatives as we speak.
My download hasn't completed yet, of the Windows image file from the 20160624 directory. I think they go together but haven't tried. Did you follow any documentation for the update? There is a chinese PDF there which can be translated with Google (with mixed success). I'm glad your Android part is working - any differences?

Once complete, I will put the files on a Google drive and share the link here. If you use Chrome to browse the site, it will offer to translate the page for you. But the Baidu download site is a pain so it will still be better on Google drive. Please note that you flash the files at your own risk. The first Windows image I downloaded from Pipo had a virus in the Light test tool.

I have uploaded the files to mega.nz here
https://mega.nz/#F!tspmzYYb!ZczuryErr2r23KlLuPFP6A
There are 11 files for the Windows 10 image (10 x 700mb, 1 x 396.8mb), one for the BIOS and one for the PDF in Chinese.
*Warning*: I scanned the extracted Windows 10 files and a virus was detected in one of the test tools. I only use Bitdefender so it may be a false positive - please make sure you scan it before using it for your own satisfaction. I have not changed the Pipo original files at all.
Apart from this, does anyone have a problem with battery discharging? I put mine in my bag fully charged on Monday and didn't use it once. It's already dead on Friday morning.

De acuerdo! The power supply gets really hot. I will only plug in the tablet to charge if I am present in the room, otherwise I worry about a fire. I intend to buy a new charger from a UK electronics shop when I get the time.

Update - I've now flashed the BIOS update (the 1_ version not the 0_ version as I have the 4Gb model) and it seemed to work fine. I haven't loaded the Windows 10 updated image yet as my existing Windows install is still working ok. However the Android partition just sits on the android loading logo (big white/silver word 'android' anim). I'll investigate further later but am a little worried as there's no Android update files available to reflash yet :-/ . Still, can't make omelettes without breaking eggs...
Further update - there is in fact an Android update there, but it's the original one from 4th May '16. I will download it and put it with the other files (it's 1.9Gb so might take some time).

No Power button
Let's have a look and see what we have.
Complete Unit, Flash looking Remote, AU Power Plug (Yaa) and HDMI cable
Inside, this would have to be the most populated PCB I have seen in awhile
More on the bottom than the top or is it the other way around.
Note : Reset button behind the AV Port.
You can also see in the above picture of the Optics closer, 2 leds bit of clear solid plasticy thing, easy to remove.
Too reduce the glow a little I removing the tube, there is also a clear bezel window around the edge lets the light out.
You can also remove this to allow some air circulation as it does get warm/hot and as it's a sealed with the exception of ports etc, not many places for the heat to get out. None.
WIFI Chip
Here we have the Ram I recall using this make of ram years ok...unsure of its correct make.
I use to call it Superman Ram, not sure if it can leap building in a single bound, or faster than a speeding bullet. but it appears ok at the present.
Switch on.....
One of the most impressive Boot up logo I have seen in awhile something akin to a Spielberg Movie.
https://youtu.be/UOR7JFuDyVM
Colourful GUI different, running Android 5.1
Testing
Easy power on, setup no hassles. Connecting to WIFI, 5ghz, Google straight in few updates done and easy.
Android 5.1 interface nothing different found as yet
Downloaded the usual 10 or so regular apps I use for testing, speed good and no stalling while installing smooth
WIFI ok considering it's a sticky tape antenna about 4 meters from router good strength.
Heat
Idle 55c doing stuff up to 75c using CPU Temp Pure from Google Play
Heat seeking device is showing 10C less on the PCB than the actual software, so it's still a hotty but easy fix I feel.
A bit of thick thermal pad between heatsink on cpu and metal weight plate in the base will help the cause I believe,
and it did by 20c at idle. the distance was a little too far so i raised the Base plate closer to heatsink with some packing.
As you can see by Temperature, top middle of screen
Above was yesterday on the bench and open doing tests
Below a few minutes ok Mod done and unit sealed.
As I have been advised Holes are very expensive to buy still.
Some scores for those that like the number and looking OK
More Detail of the Geekbench score can be seen: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/6086876
That's all the basic testing for the minute, I dare say it will compare to most of the other S905 Media Players about.
Looks are good if you need a little colour in your life it's not that distracting really, all a bit of fun.
Performance is looking good at this stage no weird stuff happening as yet, time will tell
Bit of a mod has reduce the heat by 20c and that has to be good, even tho it would be ok running as it was.
More to come with Kodi and other stuff as it happens.
Unit does not have root as it comes but will what happens with EZ root etc a little later.
Cheers
QBOX5USD $5.00 Coupon just found while looking about.

I just did the Q-box with ease yet to fully test 100%, It will be fine being a finless creation

Follow the instructions.
It also works on many other s905 Media players
Thank you very much. I will try it and I comment
To Improve Wifi Performance, I have placed the Sticky Tape Antenna to the lid of the (peel carefully)
Qbox and has improved wifi connections, I can now go to other rooms and receive much better.
Latest firmware bit of a bug with some Google Store, and fix should be available soon.
OTA update also not doing its Job at the present.
Latest Firmware I have,
If you had the first release leds would cycle continuous,
Current but google sick version lets you manually cycle colour leds or have them off using i button on remote.
Audio from the boot sequence has also been removed.
Hi guys,
Just asking, as I have a 46" old Sony TV, this would be a great addition to it (as somekind of smart tv-ish addition), I see on some videos the "Miracast" app, is it a sink miracast implementation (like a receiver, what smart tvs usually do)? And how does it perform? (a small video would do the work! and much appreciated).
New Frimware Q-box 2/16gb Google fix
Firmware Q-box 2/16 Further testing at the present shows that this firmware mentioned works ok Q-Box 2/16gb wifi and ethernet ok.

I removed the heat sink and paste and added some arctic paste. I also raised the base plate with duct tape for now, lol, I'll redo it when my thermal pad comes in. I plan on raising the base plate with a few layers of thermal pad and some pad on top of the plate.
I also drilled some holes in the side for better ventilation.
The drill bit walked a little on the first hole but it's not noticeable at all more than a foot away.[emoji4]
So far the idle temp on mine is down to 50C. It was 60-65C.

A mate has the Unit for a bit so to explain
After a day or so and the new firmware gave an option to turn LEDS off so I reinstalled the bits and its all back together, the glow was more for the back of the unit and would still flow thru to the front. You ccould just run a bit of black tape or something around the out side edge.
Bit of thick thermal pad on top of the heatsink, still left a slight gap to the metal plate, I placed some thermal pad under the plate to raise it so with the unit was screwed back together it would squeeze, too much it will bulge, crude but has done the job.

Hi there everyone!
I recently purchased one of this box and could not figure out how to enable or use screen mirroring, if it is possible. I would like to stream my phone's screen to TV through Q-Box.
Any suggestion would help.
Thank You!
Me either, I have a Huawei ascend mate 2 on Marshmallow and I could not get it to work. I am BRICKED right now awaiting delivery of a double male cable to try and fix.
Just a tip: DO NOT TRY AND UPDATE via SD card.

You may want to say what kind of phone you are using.

[*NEW*] Nexus 5 Battery Upgrade! BL-T19 2700mAh Mod (nexus 5x battery)

The Nexus 5 was produced a while ago, more than 4 years!
But this phone is still fast and I'm using it as my daily device. But there was one problem, the battery!
If you want to replace it you still get an (if you're lucky) an original used battery. If you're unlucky it's a fake one or it was just lying around, loosing all capacity and is at least as bad as the battery you already have.
In 2013/2014 a lot of people managed to press an Lg G2 battery inside the nexus, the BL-T7
BUT this phone and it's battery is very old, like the nexus 5
I tried the BL-T7 Mod, after receiving a lot of fake batterys, I finally got an original one, but yeah, still a 3 years old battery, that was lying around - so it was not good at all, and I lost NFC and Wireless charging
See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/3000mah-battery-mod-lg-g2-battery-t3651460/post73284739#post73284739
#############################################################################
Here is what I got for you:
On Ebay, I was looking for a new phone (because of bad battery life) and I found a perfectly fine looking Nexus 5x for 20€, the seller said it won't turn on. I ordered it and i did not manage to repair it, the seller just lied, bc he didn't say it was damaged by water
What I did: I saw the battery, thought about, "hey this is a 2016 battery, original and it may fit"
I ripped it out and really managed to swap this 2700mAh BL-T19 battery with my Lg G2 3000mah BL-T7 battery that was inside my nexus
And holy, THIS BATTERY LIFE! - 5hours SOT under heavy load!: https://imgur.com/a/sOdT0
https://imgur.com/a/HAm8e "normal load"
https://imgur.com/a/x2kXO min brightness, not doing much (only whatsapp), I know that is unrealistic, but at least, it's achievable!!
Benefits:
it's a new Battery (produced in 2015/2016)
NFC working!
Wireless charging working!
The nexus 5x had a lot of problems, a lot of dead phones, and if you're lucky you can buy a defective phone (like me) and get a fully functional battery!!
#############################################################################
NOTE: Use Tape, this is a powerful battery, if the wires touch each other, it may start burning
I won't take any responsibility if your phone get's destroyed!
#############################################################################
How I did this:
this is a BL-T19:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and this is the one in the nexus 5 (BL-T9):
as you can see, the nexus 5x's is longer, but it's the same width. It's longer than the lg g2's one so i had to make space
I won't make pictures of my mod because i already did it, closed my phone and I really don't want to reopen it did it, see below (5.)
1. Completely disassemble your phone, you need to remove metal from the frame
2. Search a dremel to make space: I have no dremel so I used a DC motor and put sandpaper with zip ties on it (https://imgur.com/a/O7SIU)
3. Now remove metal from the frame, I have here some pictures on my testing phone frame: https://imgur.com/a/53tbX
4. Replace the battery! Do it exacly like here: https://imgur.com/a/Yj7ww
I won't decribe it any further, you may ask for help here or in older threads (Lgg2 battery replacement)
5. Here are some other Pictures I edited for you, the 2nd and third are the important ones! https://imgur.com/a/lpz8W
here are Pics of my mod, don't worry, mine looks a little different because I used another batteryboard because I broke my original one: https://imgur.com/a/8BLVj
6. You're done! try to bootup, close the phone, and be happy about a big battery NFC and Wireless charging!!!
Note that you may have to remove some plastic from the cover that goes onto the mainboard,

Did that mod yesterday, so I don't know yet
Update: I did my first full charge 2 hours ago, have 1h sot and still 91% left, holy moly
Update 2: 77%, 2.5h sot: whatsapp, browsing and youtube half brightness and an slight overclock to 2.35Ghz (elementalx kernel)
Will report tomorrow after a full day usage because for now i'm gonna load it overnight
Okay my test results are here!
https://imgur.com/a/sOdT0
My display brightness was maxed out most of the time.
5h Sot for an intensive workload is very impressive! I tried everything except gaming to stress the hell out of that battery, and it lasted so long!
I'm gonna test a normal workload and upload pictures here if you want.
wow great work!
I'm still using the hammy as my daily driver and using the first original battery.
will try your mod if I have time and the technician
https://imgur.com/a/HAm8e 7 ****ing hours!
https://imgur.com/a/x2kXO Wow.
.... That seems a little crazy for a battery that has only 400mAh higher capacity than the original 2300.. so.. a 20% boost?
Well, I undervolted and my screen was on low brightness
But my core clock is at 2.35Ghz
It was not a worst case, but it's real
and it's not only 20%, because the original battery is veeery old, you are very lucky if you get one with more than 1700mah left
I doubt any of us were getting 5-6 hours SOT even 4 years ago.. maybe, though. It has been a long time. I'm not doubting you, just wondering out loud how that works out since the math sounds weird.

Mostly it's because I really tried to get the best Sot, with using it not much. So my phone was a long time on my desk with whatsapp open, and I was only texting.
That's no usual usage, my usual usage was 7 hours Sot, still impressive
Looks difficult to replace mate
sure, it's not the easiest swap.
Bit if you can use a dremel and solder 5 cables there should be no problem
I did my mod in 2h
expect 1h because theres no need to try and error anymore
I picked up a 5x battery and was going to attempt this but holy cow, you have to make about 1cm of room from cutting the frame/plastic covers. That's far more material than I'm comfortable doing... I'd say keep looking for a similarly sized battery since you're manually wiring the electrodes to the mainboard anyway...

I think you didn't take a look at my pictures, you have to remove everything around it, and reassemble the battery board on the side, if you need one more centimeter, you did something realy wrong
I have an original 5x battery, and I can confirm that theres enough space to fit it in
EDIT: I reopened my phone to fix something up, I made Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/8BLVj

Ah I did miss that. Once I peeled the battery and swapped boards it appears to fit with trimming just the top and bottom borders.
That said, it still didn't work for me... I must've fried my board because it just keeps booting to the battery icon over and over, even when I remove the battery connections.
Also, in your pics you seem to only have two wires directly soldered to the three pads below the battery connector then another wire going into the battery connector itself... is that right?
Anyone know if there's a way to recover from the battery icon reboot sequence? I'm able to get to the fastboot mode, but if it tries to boot into recovery or system it'll just shut off and go back to the battery icon.

That's exactly the reason why I now use another battery board. I killed my original one and had the same battery icon reboot problem. And yes one wire is going to the battery connector itself because I broke the pin on the board, but don't worry, It's the same connection. So you can either use the pins or the connector or a mix between
To 'recover' your phone, try to just disconnect the third pin, this is the thermal sensor pin. It's on the board the very left one. Here's a picture with just the + and - connected: https://imgur.com/a/GVPMt
Great mod! I may try it when i get a nexus 5x battery. Btw, how are this golden "wires" called? (The ones that goes from the positive and negative to the board)
