New Wave of Android Phones are ironic - Windows Phone 7 General

Yes, this is an angry rant but this needs to be done.
After this forum has to endure relentless abuse from people about certain hardware decisions surrounding Windows Phone, I find it more than mildly amusing that these 3 flagship phones:
HTC One X - 4.7" Quad Core 1.5GHz 8MP
HTC One XL - 4.7" Dual Core 1.5GHz LTE 8MP
HTC One S - 4.3" Dual Core 1.5GHz 8MP
All have one thing in common: No SD Card Slot.
And the gorgeous Sony Xperia U/P phones are using android-laughable, mere Dual Core 1GHz "old" chips in 2012.
That being said, I love the direction new Sony Mobile is going in. Eye-catching phones with reasonable specs. Nothing overboard like 4.7" Quad Core. All we hear in here is specs specs specs, yet we are seeing a regression in certain areas among specific phones in the Android world. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard someone say Windows Phone is crap because 16GB no SD card slot is not going to be enough I would be retired.
What do Windows Phones need?
CPU: Modest Dual Core CPU only for the accompanying GPU to play nice games.
Handsets: More handsets on more carriers, and more nice ones like the Lumia 800/900. Would love to see Sony get into the Windows Phone game but that will not happen until Apple starts suing them too. And hey, if the S is popular enough that may happen.
Apps: More apps.
And that is it. Because a fantastic looking phone that is stable, smooth, has great battery life, and a huge library of apps is the recipe for success.
end rant.

I don't pay any of that junk attention, it's usually always the same people anyway....they'll see a shiny, new Android phone and the first thing they do is say "see, WP doesn't have this..it's a failure..". I read something the other day that made me literally laugh out loud: they said the"Windows fanboys" would change their tune about multiple cores...if the phone already comes with it, why wouldn't it be supported!?! I have repeatedly said I own an Evo 3D and an HD7, one has a single core processor, the other, a dual core processor...guess which one is smoother?

Well, sometimes it is hard to ignore the junk when you read it everyday. A large part of the noise went away when bans were handed out.
But what is wrong with us all when specs matter regardless of how useable those specs are? I am beyond curious to see what battery life they 4.7" ultrasharp, ultracore phones are going to have and how people will be able to justify it.
I like my car fast, but I do not think its acceptable if I need to refuel constantly and carry around a fuel cannister in my trunk cuz the gas mileage sucks.

I agree, that's why I lol. ..some folks you just can't please: a person posted that you can't download mp3s over the air with WP, I said you can with the right app ( I use the full version of easyring ), they then complained that it wasn't free like Android lol...

Ok, back on topic. Yeah, these specs do seem a little stupid, but this is even on WP7. I must say that the OEM's need to make better devices & give better choices on memory size. At least give a few versions; 8/16/32 GB. Not force everyone to one size. 16 GB is good enough for me for now, but I can see how some people could use more. 8 GB is just laughable IMO for that matter, but some people just don't need that much space I guess.

He forgot to mention they will be available in 16 32, and I think 64 gb variations.

I have to agree with this. I disappeared because of the constant Android fanfare here and the lack of action by the moderators. I had to constantly ***** about it in PM to them because they would hand out a warning to me and allow them to continue ruining the experience here.
I honestly don't think that these specs going on in the mobile world are going to last though. It's very reminiscent of the power wars with PCs a few years back. Ultimately, efficiency won out and not "omg I have 7ghz." And I think you're seeing that with Windows 8, where no new specs are required. We're seeing that with Windows Phone - where an older snapdragon feels like a newly released processor.
I'm honestly happy with my HD7, I have been since day one. The OS, the apps, and the experience has done nothing but improve every single day. With the exception of HTCs HORRIBLE driver release and bugs, it has been as solid as solid can be.

Forgot? The 4.3" Samsung Focus S comes in 16/32GB options as well in the same phone. The HTC One S 4.3" is 16GB. So I need to get a 4.7" phone in order to enjoy 32GB if I want an HTC One? Maybe that will change but as far as I see there are no variations.
But to be balanced I agree phones should come in 16/32GB variations. The Cloud is not a good answer for why only 8GB.

This is hilarious!
It takes android phones 4 cores to get near the smooth experience windows phone offers with only one core.

Will back to my silent state again...think and experience always make you better....

I think the forum is generally silent because you don't spend time tinkering with WP, it works. My point (and I think the Op's) is that having multiple cores on a cellphone doesn't guarantee a speedy user experience. No matter how much we go back and forth, some people can't accept that there are a select few that actually enjoy their phones without worrying what the other guys are doing .

I'm not sure the op had a point. It just seemed like the loling about certain new android phones having undesirable attributes. It seemed more about the sd card than the cores, anyway.
If I understand correctly, SD cards are being designed this way so that both system and user memory are combined into one; that way, there's no longer a hard system app limit, aside from of course the SD capacity. (I could be completely off.)
But all in all, what's the point of a thread on this? If you consider lack of SD card to be a dealbreaker like the people in the OP supposedly did, then yes, you won't be buying the One X. So what? Buy something else. Perhaps if there'd been a system change that made Android no longer support SD cards, then it'd be amusingly ironic. But you're talking about 3 phones here..

Not really anything new since the past two nexus phones haven't had SD slots, but it's definitely not going to help HTC with sales. Personally, I won't even consider buying a phone unless it has expandable storage. I passed on the Palm Pre back in the day for that very reason even though at the time it was the nicest phone Sprint had and I was stuck with a three year old Sanyo dumbphone.
It's a shame OEMs are following in Apple's footsteps with regard to non-expandable storage (unless you buy a whole new device for more money) and none removable batteries.

Not really on topic to this fora, but this being XDA we should at least try to keep information on here accurate.
It's a very common misconception that hardware will be able to fix Android's stuttering when it's a software issue. It comes down to the fact that Google hasn't optimized the Linux kernel for Mobile Devices instead of PCs. It doesn't give priority to the UI with CPU usage, so if something else wants CPU time the UI performance will suffer. Not to mention a thread can only run on one CPU so the other cores would just sit idle regardless. Hardware rendering has also always been available, but due to it's overhead there are times when it can actually hinder performance.
The article below deals primarily with Android, but the underlying issues apply to pretty much all operating systems.

Three new android phones don't have removable storage, yes, I get that. So what? There are so many other new devices that, if an android fanboy don't want the One X, he don't have to get it. Saying "haha you can't get these particular devices" isn't actually saying anything, when the dissers have a varied enough ecosystem to draw upon. Maybe if they were all HTC fans (but HTC isn't even the #1 seller anymore, so..)

I am perfectly fine if an android phone doesn't have a SD card slot. Those are on the big side of the big-small continuum. I don't think I would want a phone without a micro SD card slot unless it was a cheap and small phone. Even then, I don't know if I would do one without a micro SD card slot. Of it is cheap, the it probably won't have much in the way of storage space.

But yeah... OEM is thinking that customer will not need more than 16GB of data which is wrong. And they are thinking that people would not want laggy performance, so they don't use the SD Card to prevent this.
That is what i think.
But, the problem with this, i have said many times , that people will never know that Windows Phone run smoother in One Core only, they will still believe in the number and the mouth of the representative. "2 Cores will be better than 1, 2 is bigger than 1" .

[Q] What would you like to see in the next HTC Phone?

What would you like to see in the next HTC Phone? Choose? And also post what you would like to see and have.
Good hardware. I.e., a camera sensor that doesn't suck, use of NAND rather than SD card for storage, screens which doesn't look washed out.
HTC has a lot of stepping up to do for me to consider another device from them. I was pretty happy with my HD2, but the HD7 I initially picked up went back to the store real quick. In the end I ended up with the Omnia 7 from Samsung instead.
Hardware
I switched for the first time from HTC, couldn't accept the Surround. Get rid of that rediculous speaker setup and replace it with their great keyboard. At least a 4.3" screen equal to the Super AMOLED of the Samsung Focus, maximum amount of internal memory (32GB would be fine with me), HDMI port.
I would vote for 32GB+ NAND flash for sure, all other things aren't important as far as I'm concerned.
More importantly, I'd like to see more than one next HTC WP7 phone (just as Samsung phones, and phones from other OEMs).
Because at this point of time, sales numbers for the next few quarters will determine the fate of WP7. And without phones you won't get those numbers. None of the OEMs is or will be capable of making just one phone that'll drive the OS forward.
No matter how much MS will talk about "sales aren't important" and "we're in it for the long haul", they are facing lots of pressure from investors, this isn't the time of XBox launch. Unlike many, I don't think that the launch was a failure (getting 2% of smartphone sales is awesome with so few devices and on half the carriers), but MS will need to ramp it up aggressively, and it can't be done by ads alone no matter how much they spend.
That there are no leaks with MWC looming is troubling.
Tegra 2, lots of NAND, 4" SLCD.

Agreed. During the initial launch we knew about pretty much every phone that was going to be released by this point. The only thing I've seen this time around is that Asus phone.
As for what I'd want in the next phone, physical buttons and half-decent build quality.
Microsoft knows that it has a major uphill battle. Most phone sales are due to word of mouth (a friend has one and loves/hates it) over TV ads. Windows Mobile had a bad rap when compared to Android and the iPhoney, due to its lack of upgrades.
Microsoft needs to blow the lid off this, work with providers to make KICK ASS phones that people want for fair prices.
As for HTC phones, anything over a 4.3" display is getting a little too big (don't people keep their phones in their pockets ?)for a phone. This is getting into the tablet area but, if there is NO QWERTY keyboard, the display MUST be at least 4"
Fast, "great quality, good sized display", modern tech (DLNA, FM, A-GPS, NFC...etc), QWERTY keyboard with a small form factor. If HTC has it, great, if someone else, maybe then it's for me.
I was loyal to HTC for a while but, I have had some crappy phones, so I am open to try others to see how good they are.

The great thing about WP7 is that it doesn't really matter (shhh, don't tell OEMs). It makes a huge difference. My Mozart is the first HTC phone I've had that doesn't need a new ROM. It's marvellous what no OEM software does to a phone.

To the OP:
You should change the QuadBand World Phone to Pentaband 3G. That's what should become the new standard for high end phones at this point.
I want dual core processor, 1gb RAM, better camera sensor/software and a hardware keyboard in a device with a 4" SLCD. Maybe one with LTE support
Problem HTC?
1. higher class of hardware (screen, speaker...)
2. a real IO port for using external addons (TV-out, IR remote control, bio sensors...)

Mango Devices: Samsung lineup

Let's see, we have:
1) Samsung Focus S announced by AT&T
2) Samsung Focus Flash announced by AT&T
3) Samsung Omnia 7 S (made up name) leaked by the FCC
All these seem to sport Super AMOLED screens which is great. We do need information on availability and storage options but the Focus S sounds very promising. Today I'm much more likely to buy a Samsung Mango phone over a HTC.

Focus or go home, pretty much. It's the best device confirmed to be coming out now.
4.3" SA+ screen @ WVGA is a lot more bearable than 4.7" SLCD @ WVGA. 1.4 GHz almost as good as 1.5. It has a 32 GB Option IIRC. Samsung tends to use NAND in their phones, so I'm hoping for that. Decent cameras, and the sound and cell radio are almost guaranteed to be better than HTC devices.
Too bad AT&T axed Unlimited Data. That's a showstopper for me, and I'm guessing lots of other people.

Super excited for the Focus S, assuming at least 24 GB will be available. Now, let's see what else will be coming out around that time...
@N8ter where did you get that 32GB info? Storage hasn't been mentioned. I hope it's a Worldwide phone unlike the first Focus.

It's heresay. I have seen it mentioned by a few people at different sites. Sorry. That's why I put the "IIRC" part It's questionable.
If it has no 32GB option it'll be dead to me.
I'll buy a new iPod instead. Really, this is getting ridiculous.
I wonder if the new iPhone will have a 4" screen...
I spent about 2 grand on phones in 2010-2011. I'll be frugal for the next few years, so whatever phone I get in the next 1-3 months well... I'll just take a contract out cause I won't be giving anything else a try.
They better knock this **** out of the ballpark. Really, they're running out of chances and it's not like the issue of low storage in the devices wasn't a hot topic following the release of the 1st gen WP7 devices...
Though it voids the warranty WP7 are not hard to upgrade the memory. i'm being alittle hypocritical pointing this out, consdiering I bought a 32gb DVP when I could saved $100 getting a cheaper one with lower storage and upgrading. Prior to the DVP comingto AT&T I also got an HTC surround over the LG b/c of storage, though I prefer physical keyboards.
It depends on what WP7 device you have. It's not easy to upgrade the storage on an HD7. There is no user-accessible SD Card Slot. You literally have to open some of these phones up to get at those slots. Lots of devices have tape inside that clearly indicates if teh phone has been opened up. Some of them have stuff in the screws that makes it obvious if you even stuck a screwdriver in them, nevermind opened it up, and they'll void your warranty if that's been tampered with (they won't even touch it, they'll just say you're on your own - I know people this has happened to).
That's like saying it's not hard to remove the battery from an iPhone, in many cases.
$100 to go from 15 to 32G when you can be absolutely assured that it will work correctly is worth it. Many of us would have paid that, but we didn't get the choice - at all.
The DVP didn't have a 32G option until many months after it was released. For the first 6 months or so all Dell Had were 8 and 16 GB options.
Plus that device only has 256MB RAM, IIRC, which is a showstopper for me. Not to mention the camera on it is beyond terrible.
No. The DVP has 512 but the early tmo ones had a bug where the system only read half of the memory.
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
This time around I'm a little undecided. I'm leaning towards the Focus S, but I would consider the Titan too. I would like to have a physical keyboard as well, but it seems all of the Mango devices aren't available with that option. I guess I might hold out for a little while, but I would like to upgrade before the end of the year.

Just what's wrong with these OEMs? Why in the world do they equate high end with oversized screens?
I'm don't want to go any bigger than 4", but 8GB of storage and PenTile? Screw it.

There's a pretty easy to follow guide to change the HD7's SD Card without voiding warranty. Don't have to take out the screw with the void warranty sticker on it & can move the tape out of the way pretty easily. That being said, never done it, because of the compatibility issues with SD Cards & WP7.

Pros/cons of the Nexus

I'd like to try and maintain an ongoing list of what the community has to say about this phone. Hopefully people can make a well informed buying decision with the help of this list.
Pros
Nexus. Will be maintained by google, not the carrier.
Screen. Native 720p 4.65", Super AMOLED
4G
ICS
NFC
1.2Ghz Dual Core OMAP 4460
size - despite the 4.65" screen size it is not much bigger than other phones with 4.3",4.5" displays
Bluetooth 4.0+HS if/when software supports it
Cons
Non expandable storage. While the device comes with 16GB/32GB storage and does support external USB media, it adds extra bulk to the phone. There are no simple ways to extend your storage capabilities without adding extra bulk, or risking losing data coverage and not being able to access your cloud storage.
Mixed Opinions
Lack of Gorilla Glass. Will have another brand of unknown quality.
Outdated GPU. I put this in mixed opinions as many people speculate that this hardware was hand picked by the makers of android, and has already proven to handle anything thrown at it.
Lack of physical buttons. Really depends on the user. I personally like where they are going with this.
Exclusiveness. There are many rumors, and this will be moved or deleted when we know more. I personally find it to be a con if it is truly exclusive to Verizon, as the more carriers offer this, the more people will get there hands on it, hence more developers will flock to this phone.
Price. Currently we only have an unofficial price for the international version, which I don't see any complaints for.
Please feel free to post what you think should be added or moved on this list.
He edited his post and mixed opinions.
I voided my warranty and your nexus.
Mixed opinions on size.
Con: huuuge top bezel!!!!
Indeed, I originally had under mixed opinions, that both the CPU/GPU were outdated as the SGSII has a 1.5 Dual core, clock speeds can be decieving. There is no doubt that this 1.2 can compete with the rest of the high end devices with higher clock speed.

The bezel is larger than most phones by HTC and Motorola. It's comparible to the Galaxy series and the iPhone... Take a look at how thin the bezel is on the HTC DesireHD/Inspire. There's only just enough room for the speaker grill, that's it. The bottom bezel actually serves a functional purpose, making the use of the phone more comfortable, but the top? Urgh...
The only cons is size IMO. Everything else is great. But since my SGS2 is perfect size IMO, I hope Galaxy Nexus will be OK too.
A huge pro for me is that, the hardware was specifically created to work with ICS, sometimes I just feel that other devices just slap an update on a phone to get it out there and then you get a bunch of bugs and defects. Also knowing that this phone, is the phone in mind when making future OTA updates.
I wanted a Nexus device ever since the Nexus One came out but I had Verizon, I'm very happy to hear that I can have one now.
I'm only hoping that the with the 5 MP camera, will a have very nice lense and shutter so it can at least compare to my Incredible 2 or maybe even the iPhone.
i've mixed opinions about the CPU
it's only 1.2 Ghz
looking forward to see how it fares against Exynos 1.2 Ghz & Qualcomms 1.5 Ghz
-con: android.
Non expandable storage
I used to think this was an issue but two things changed my mind. 1) I got a Galaxy Tab. No removable storage and I never think about it. It was a big con when the Tab came out but nobody even talks about this anymore. 2) I've had Android phones for 2 years now. All of them have had removable SD cards. Funny thing, I've never removed them.
Lack of Gorilla Glass. Will have another brand of unknown quality.
I've never had Gorilla Glass and have never broken a phone's glass. Not an issue to me. I'm careful.
Lack of physical buttons.
No physical buttons on the Galaxy Tab (Honeycomb). It's a LOT better than physical buttons. Why? ALL Android devices from now on will have the same layout. I've had an Original Droid, an Incredible and now a Thunderbolt. The button layout isn't the same on these devices. I still find I'm pressing the back when I meant the home button. That never happens to me on the Tab.
Exclusiveness.
I'm a Verizon user, my company's a Verizon user. Not an issue. I'm glad for this. I can use data when the guy standing next to me with an AT&T Android phone gets "no network" messages. Other than those two phone companies the others are just niche players.
Physical Size
Before my Thunderbolt I had an Incredible. I considered the Incredible the perfect size. Light, thin and fit well in the shirt pocket. Never, I said, would I go to the massively large phone. Then I got a Thunderbolt. I can't imagine what I was thinking. I was a size-bigot fool. The size of the Thunderbolt is fabulous. Yes, it's a tad heavier than the Incredible but it feels well in the hand and the screen size is perfect. I was one of those who made a brash statement without the experience to go with it. Now that I've have experience with both a small phone and a large phone I'll never go back to the small screen again. I say, for those of you with large screen phobias, say nothing until you've experienced it for a week or two. I bet you'll change your mind.

OK. I agree with all of this.
Nexus line is great, it can overwhelm phones from 2 generations ahead.
The screen resolution is great too. Pentile doesn't even matter, the resolution almost omits its presence.
ICS. Much smoother. Much more customization. Much more versatile and beautiful.
The CPU it more than enough. People are *****ing about "OH ****! Only 1.2GHz?!", but really, that's way more than enough, unless you're a benchmark bug. "Yo! I got a phone that already runs everything great, but I just want a better one because I want 10k Quadrant points...! Fuuuuuu!"
When you say "Non-Expandable Storage", no phone has that. Even SD compatible phones are limited to xGB size SD card maximum. For example, the RAZR will have a maximum of 48 GB because 16 internal + 32 SD Maximum = 48. And also, 32 GB of super fast NAND memory is great. I don't know what you want to ***** about. You wanna have super HD videos and/or photos? Just keep putting them on your PC instead of mass storing them on your phone without need.
The lack of Gorilla Glass is well put under Mixed Opinions, since it might mean something BETTER than Gorilla Glass. The Nexus S had a very very resistive glass technology/material.
The outdated GPU: Did anyone prove that this GPU is outdated? In terms of sufficient performance for Android platform? Did anyone show that? I don't think so. And you don't too. I think people are just *****ing about it the same way I explained it for the CPU.
Lack of physical buttons: I think this is an element that Google decided to have because it can enable much much more creativity. I believe that CM team or Google itself will unlock a way of changing the button icon, or even add or remove buttons. I think it is really great, and it probably also cuts down a bit on prices since physical buttons are basically a touch-capable screen/membrane for each button, which would possibly cost a little bit instead of making a little bigger screen for buttons.
Exclusiveness: Not a problem in my country, I believe, so, no comments here.
Price: Pretty much unknown, but I'm expecting a 500 ~ 600€ range (700 ~ 800$).

A 1.2 dual-core exynos is better than a 1.5 dual-core qualcomm. And a brand new OMAP 4460 1.2 dual-core is at the very least equaled to, if not better than, the 1.5 qualcomm as snapdragon's are probably the lesser performing of processors available

DITTO!!! WTF are folks complaining about with this type of hardware being outdated??? Huh??? Outdated??? We're talking about 1.2 dual-core proc that will be fitt'in in something that can put in your front shirt pocket, along with a multi-touch screen, and enough memory that you wouldn't be able to shake a stick at!
Anyway, i'm sure enough looking for the 32gb version.

Cons:

Pros-
Just about everything not listed as con.
Cons-
No pricing or availability word yet !!!!!!!
Bezel size of top and bottom and thickness. Would have liked to have seen something pushing limits for the Nexus line.
Weak GPU - Scares the crap out of me in terms of GUI.
Not clear what the DAC is.
AMOLED will likely have bluish tints on white and push reds.
Vid clips on YT seem to show inconsistent framerate in HD videos. I hate choppiness and I get this weird feeling the UI and HD videos will simply not be as smooth as they should be.

No one has to 'prove' the gpu is outdated, the specs and how long its been around (since 2007) already prove that.
The gpu in the OMAP 4460 is definitely slower than the mali 400 in the exynos, as well as the A5 in the iPhone4S.
Id wager its on par, or maybe even slightly slower than the qualcomm in my tmobile galaxy SII.
Its not the end of the world, and i have no doubt the nexus is gonna be a powerful device, but its not Samsungs flagship.
Samsung is saving the 1.5ghz exynos and other goodies for the next round of battle against the iPhone5 it looks like

So much for non-fragmentation - Nokia difference

It appears Nokia may be a standout among all the other WP7 devices in more ways than a few. Sony/Ericsson will be providing CPUs to some Nokia WP7 devices.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/02/st-ericssons-novathor-to-power-nokias-windows-phone-devices-l/
It's not Sony/Ericsson but ST-Ericsson
There is nothing that suggests this deal is exlusive to nokia as stated in the article ie other companys could also use the chip. This only means that |Nokia have confirmed they will and thus that WP7.5 will support it. I may be mistaken but supporting higher spec chips and breaking a manopoly are 2 good things. I may be wrong though.
MS can't seem to win...people complained that the 2nd generation Windows phones were a failure...yet they still complain when MS changes something...wow!
This is great news hopefully better screens will be in future WP devices.

That is not what fragmentation means
No fragmentation to see here, this is excellent news. I won't really be happy until WP7 supports damn near everything Android does in terms of hardware. I want Tegra (which NVIDIA has said is coming also), OMAP, whatever Samsung puts out, etc.

I hope not. I prefer to have quality apps and games rather than the fragmented system of Android allows. Having this new CPU might mean lower quality apps and games. Devs would have to code for more than one hardware profile.
The level of abstraction in the Windows Phone SDK really doesn't allow for much in the way of low level optimization anyway. It should be write once, run anywhere with little to no effect on app quality.

Fragmentation is one of those words which, when it was applied to Android, took on a new meaning. Unless you have an ecosystem that only pushes out one phone a year then technically fragmentation will always exist.
But fragmentation was adopted to describe the Android phenomenon where new phones could release around the same time with different OS versions and hence different capabilities (one version has copy and paste for example) & compabitibilities (app programmed for 2.1 not compatible with 1.6), and different phones could be updated or not updated and cause the same effect.
Hardware differentiations are not usually considered fragmentation once the OS offers the user the same general functionality.

.NET is CPU independent, so devs do not need to care.

Well put i would add an example of one os that nomatte what you think you have to agree avoided fragmentation and that is ios. Each year they bring out a new model that has better specs and as such the older phones end up being left behind. This will slowly happen with wp7 but to compensate MS will/should up the minimum specs from time to time to compensate. This will mean that older phones will drop off as there contract terms do and so more and more advanced features and apps can be developed without the same issues as android. This may seem bad for old devices but wp is very resorsful and so it will take a long time to drop off the back and at that point they should be obsolet anyways just like the iphone and iphone 3g are to ios. If this didnt happen you would be left at a single point unable to move forward. I would think a new min spec sheet will come with apollo though this is not to say old devices wont get it just that new hardware will have to be made ready for the next update and so on.

I agree. Without getting anal about it (since you can still purchase a 3GS for free + contract one could nitpick that iOS does have fragmentation) the iPhone is immune to fragmentation because they only push out one phone per model year.
I think this goes against every principle of consumerism that you learn in the books, but there is no arguing it is successful for Apple. Imagine if Honda decided they were only going to offer silver, automatic, 4 door Accords with Xenon lights and a 300HP VTec engine? You would wonder if they were crazy. I do understand variations of colours in a car is an important component, but I wonder if millions of people are not sucking up a 3.5" screen iPhone so that they can own an iPhone.

[All Carriers] How long until...

How long until you believe this phone becomes obsolete? I hear a lot of people (and read them, too) say that this is probably the first phone they'd go the full 2 years with...however, being realistic, when was the last time you made it two years with the same device? I haven't gone two years with the same device since the original Razr was in style.
I know, I know, at 2gb ram, dual core, etc, this phone is far from becoming obsolete, so I'll rephrase that question for you: What feature on a future phone would make you make the switch from your Galaxy S3? Or are you confident enough that there will be no other phone in the next two years that can replace it?

I don't know that I have a feature that I would jump ship for at this time ... but I wonder if, in 2 years, the size and use of applications will make even 2 gb of ram obsolete?
I'm in the camp that I can see keeping this phone throughout contract, but it is hard to tell if, in 1.5 to 2 years time, 2 GB of ram is actually not enough to keep up with programs/OS requirements. I don't necessarily think so, but remember back when 256MB of ram was a lot? That wasn't TOO long ago.
But, since I don't use my phone for intense gaming, I see this phone in my future for a long while - at least until the sandwich-making feature phone is announced.
I don't think it being obsolete would be the problem. I'll just want something newer at some point before two years. My Evo 3D could have easily lasted another year for my uses, but I still got a GS3.

It will become obsolete sometime between Q4 2012 & Q2 2013. Qualcomm are already prepping the S4 QUAD for tablets this year and its performace is roughly x2 the Dual S4, and far exceeds the Exynos 4212+Tegra 3 if I read correctly. Technically the GPU in all Android phones are obsolete or slow in comparison to Apple's latest offerings(Imaginations is like a high-end Nvidia in the mobile-space, Adreno mid, and Tegra mid-high).
For some reason I feel someone is gonna make a 1080P phone, which is useless btw--just had to throw that out there for those that were unaware. Cores cores and more cores will probably be one of the more popular acts we see though, and 2GB-4GB Ram will be standard. Unfortunately I wish these companies would realize they need to relax b/c optimizations are practically nonexistent with Stock Android phones. I hate to constantly reference Apple & WP7/8, though it's a must. When i hear people telling me stuff like the HOAX or S3, or whatever dual/quad lags--lag. Seriously, these phones are using CPUs that theoretically should outperform the 4S/iPd3, but that's normally not the case. We are getting to a point where everyone is rushing to get out the latest and greatest, however all the hardware don't mean **** when the software can't match it.
P.S. Sorry about going off on a rant.

And it only took around 2 months for it to become obsolete then, not ideal in the world I would prefer, but I suppose it can't be helped. This phone could had been so much more if Samsung stuck with the SGX instead of adopting the Mali-400. It would had been so cool to have the CPU part of the S4 combined with a dual/quad SGX543/544 like the ipad/iphones. Those GPUs outperform even the silly Tegra 3 & its fancy 16 cores(which are just 16 weak cores throw together ). I don't know what Sammy or Qualcomm were thinking about. Everyone is just dropping the ball all over the place these days.
I'm not really sure, mainly because I'm not entirely vested in this phone as it is, so it probably wouldn't take much, provided I could sell this one and cover the majority cost of a replacement phone.
I think something with sufficient horsepower to run some things which even this phone can't, but that remains to be seen. One thing that could almost definitely sell me is a flagship phone like this one that has a hardware keyboard. The problem is that I'm in the minority, so a flagship Galaxy S or Nexus phone is highly unlikely to have one, and I care ever so slightly more about the fact that flagship phones have thriving development communities, whereas one-off phones, which I may like more, won't get the same kind of attention from either developers or manufacturers.
I'll keep my phone until my contract is up. I always have (except for my BB Storm which I *****ed about until they upgraded me). My OG Droid Inc lasted for 2 years until I got this S3 and it was still in like new condition. I was tired of the small screen, but the devs here kept the phone fresh.
Hell, part of me misses my Inc. (Love this phone, though.)

Do you mean the dual core 800MHz in the 4S? That is Apple's current offering.
Since the definition of obsolete is...
1. out of use or practice; not current
2. out of date; unfashionable or outmoded
An old Startac is obsolete because it It can no longer be used. My old Motorola RAZR is not obsolete because I can still use it
for it's intended purpose.
I would say the phone will not be obsolete for many years to come. How can a device me considered obsolete if there is a phone
with a faster CPU or more memory? The phone can still be used for it's intended purpose.
My S3 can not do anything my Vibrant couldn't (with the same mechanicals), it only does it better.

Actually when I said latest offering I was referencing the iPad 3. And actually I stated the GPU in Android devices are all obsolete(as in not current in terms of power). The Legendary SGX543 MP4 in the iPad 3 mops the floor of every single Android device to ever touch this world, even the soon to be made Adreno 320 in the new S4 QUAD(snapdragon) fails to match the creature. Even the 4S' SGX543 MP2 is barely phased by the Mali 400, Adreno 225, and Tegra 3's laughable 16 core toy. I have no doubt that the S3's CPU is superior at all.

Obsolete (by my definition) doesn't mean that a newer/better product exists. Every device would be a obsolete within a few months if that were the case. To me obsolescence means that it either doesn't perform modern tasks acceptably or a new product feature is so desirable that you simply don't want your old device anymore.
We all know the S3 will handle Jelly Bean beautifully. I'm pretty confident it will be good for Key Lime Pie as well. I got close to 2 years from my OG Epic (Galaxy S1) and only upgraded short of 2 years because I could. With the strong CM/AOKP support this phone has, I'm fully confident I'll have this phone the full 2 years. Unless I break it, heh.
