[Q] The best emulators - performance wise? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the topic states. I am using emulation (NES, SNES, GENESIS & GBA) on my phone.
But are there any stats on wich emulator that are best for each system, performance wise?
Is Nesoid, Snesoid, Genoid and Gameboid the best out there, or are there other contenders of the champion title?

i like all the .emu emulator more (updated almost weekly and faster and more compatible):
nes.emu
md.emu
and from the same author: snes9x ex (wich is the only one from him that is free on his webpage), just put snes9x ex on google.

Get all the -oid emulators off the slideme marketplace. Nesoid, snesoid, gameboid, gensoid, etc. They're free.

Do you know anything about input lag? All SNES emulators for Android have always had a bad input lag up to 1/2 of a second.

Really? I've not had input lag on Kirby's Dream Land 3 on snesoid. The game itself is laggy when not overclocked, but the input itself is snappy

I've played through all 3 Donkey Kong Country's on Snesoid and didn't notice any lag

i thin snes9x ex is the best snes emu http://www.explusalpha.com/home/snes9x-ex/downloads
also md.emu is real good

Thanks for the input!
Just wanna say something about lagging (not input lag, but ordinary lag).
It´s very much about what you have installed, and what processes being run in the background. I have used Titanium Backup to wipe a lot of bloatware, and when I´m gaming, I use Astro to kill off all the unnecessary apps being run in the background.
I always run Task-Killer in Astro prior to gaming, the experience is much better.

I don't use task killer anymore because Android load the apps back to the ram as soon as you kill them. The only way is to disable (ICS feature) or freeze them, or as you said, delete.
neo.emu alone makes this phone worth its full price.

Mupen64plus is a pretty good n64 emulator and the psx emulator on the xperia play is pretty good. Or use fpse orwhatever it's called instead

Alternative way of emulating SNES on Touch Pro 2

I have been desperate for a decent SNES emulator for my touch pro 2 and have found a way of playing the games on my phone since Morphgear is all but useless on our phones. Put haret on your phone and run Android http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627997. Go to the Android market and download the free version of SNESOID and enjoy. It plays nearly full speed on our phones. I would however recommend that before running SNESOID that you close all applications running in the background in Android before attempting to run a game. I can't wait until sound is supported with the Android build for the Touch Pro 2 then we will have our cake and eat it too. Hope this helps some of you guy's that have been searching for emulators as I have.
I'm sorry, but why is morphgear useless?
(I'm sorry, but why is morphgear useless?)
Hey Scalage. Speed and the interface of Morphgear is what to me makes it useless. When I play SNES games I like to play them to play as close to full speed as possible with sound. Morphgear just don't cut it on a WVGA device unless you are running it on a phone like Omnia 2 or HTC HD 2 with much faster processors. So it didn't take me long after I installed Morphgear to uninstall it from my Touch Pro 2. If you have found success with Morphgear then I am impressed. But performance with games like Super Mario World and Mario Kart when I tried it really disappointed me.

Where to get emulators and games?

When I first got the Evo, July I believe, I tried an emulator and it lagged pretty bad, button response was terrible, so I quit and I never tried again. Any idea where I can grab a NES, SNES, and Sega emulators? Where can I get games for them?
I did a search for this, but it was all for the Touch HD.

I was looking for more trusted sites so that I could go somewhere without worrying about what I am downloading. I was also hoping for insight on the emulator that would have the least lag.

Which emulator are you looking for; playstation, nes, ect?
SNESoid, GENsoid, and NESoid all have lite version available in the market (only difference is the instant save/load feature is disabled.
I have the entire english library of SNES, Genesis, and NES games on my droid (I don't game on the EVO, no good controls lol)
Don't listen to any of these noobs.
Go to the Market and search for "EMULATOR ROMS" by COOLCODE.ORG
The offer an app that you can download emulators and roms directly from their app.
I don't want to give out any site names so PM if you want...

[Q] Wonders from a newbie

Hi!
I have been playing a lot of emulators on PC during the years. But is right now thinking of buying an Xperia Play, because I understand that it´s quite a nice phone. It´s on quite a sale in scandinavia right now, so I might be getting one during the week.
I would however like some input for some questions, and would be thankful if someone would take their time to answer them for me.
1. I have problems finding a reliable compatibility list for PSX-gaming. Three of the games that I really itch to play are "Alundra", "Final Fantasy Tactics" and "Legend of Mana". Can someone please enlighten me how these games will run on a Xperia Play?
2. I also have a question about other emulators. Will SNES & Genesis-emulators run lag-free on an Xperia Play?
Thank you for reading (and maybe answering) .
The Xperia Play is really awesome for playing games in emulators. The only problem is that most of them don't support the touchpad.
These are the emulators I've tried:
NESoid
SNESoid - completely lag-free, to answer your question
N64oid (sometimes a bit laggy)
GBCoid - gameboy color emulator
GameBoid - GBA emulator
FPse - PSX emulator
Unfortunately neither of these support the touchpad. And for PSX games I actually prefer FPse to the official PSX emulator that comes with the Play, because, while the official one supports the touchpad (very nicely, might I add), it is a bit buggy with most games that aren't available officially for it.
not sure about genesis as i haven't tried it yet. snes is no problem as is gameboy/advance/colour. on the psx side of things, you could try fpse or psxdroid for emulators. you would need the roms for those games you want as well as the bios file. or, you could also convert the roms of those games to work via the play's playstation pocket app. the pre-installed crash bandicoot game will give you an idea of how smooth it is once converted using the psxperia tool.
This is a magnificent device for emulators. Nuff said

I have emulators for Yongzhi's emulators for:
-Gameboid - GamBoy Advance
-SNEWSoid - Super Nintendo
-Gensoid - Genesis
-FPse - PSX
-N64oid - N64
And they all work flawlessly and are availble at the SlideMe market for FREE except for the N64 and PSX emulators. The PSX emulator is avaible on the Android Market and works on a lot of games but of course not all of them. I would suggest you visit the FSpe forum to find out which specific games work for the Play.
The N64 emulator is available from the SlideMe market for I think 2 bucks. I works okay with some games but is still be updated. Also u can try the open source one but I forget what it's called. I think it's on the XDA forum somewhere.

"Best" ROM for retro gaming?

I know this is a very subjective question, but I would like some input on which ROM you guys think is best for the "oid" emulators on this device? I imagine it to be something based on Gingerbread, with as little bloat so perhaps AOSP or CM7? Or is the stock experience fine for this use?
Many thanks!

If you just use emulators you can also try an ics rom.
Sorry for my bad English. It's not my native language.
on ics (if you find a smooth ics rom, that is) emulators should work fine. also on ics n64oid has analog support (which on gingerbread only mupen64plus has), and it's overall better than mupen64plus on gingerbread in speed and it runs animal forest quite well; dunno for the rest though. on the psx front, fpse has analog support on ics, while on gingerbread only psxperia gives you analog support on psx games and of course there are not many analog controlled games supported by psxperia (soul reaver and mgs don't work, for example).
the other 100% digital controlled emulators should be exactly the same as on gingerbread. thing is, i tried what seems to be the best ics rom to date and it was quite laggy. maybe you'll find a good one for you, as you don't need good gamepad compatibility on android games.
either way, this device is the absolute best mobile emulating machine. even on gingerbread you don't really lose anything. there are just a handful of analog controlled psx games which are not supported by psxperia/mupen64plus, and they play perfectly with the dpad on fpse/n64oid.
therefore, your choice. if you really care about analog control on games you can't play as you wish on gingerbread, look for a smooth ics rom. if you don't care, i suggest trueancestor 2.3.7, as it gives you so much free memory.
Ok thanks ill check it out.

Hi,
I'm only play retro games in my xperia play too. That's the reason why I bought one... At this moment I'm using CM9 RC2, an ICS rom, and the emulators run well.... I'm playing zelda ocarina of time with the lastest n64oid version, touchpads works nice.... very similar as the joystick... Link can run and walk :victory: things you couldn't do with the D-pads.
The snes emulator that works in the ICS roms is, SNESDroid... the SNesoid didn't worked
Other emulators that worked:
GB color: GBCoid
GBA: GameBoid (you need a bios, tell me if you don't have one :highfive
NES: Nesoid
Hope this help you.
Cheers :good:
I suggest True Ancestor ROM too, always free RAM and bloatware removed. It offers great performance in N64oid compared with others ROM's, the mainly reason I use my Xperia Play

I got better performance using N64oid on a ICS ROM (AOKP to be more specfic) and the touchpads work great..
i.e. yoshi's story was skipping on True Ancestor, but ran flawless on AOKP.
EDIT:
The emu's I'm using (has worked for every game i have thrown at each of them)
FPSE - PSX -touchpads on ICS
GBA.emu - GBA
GBC.emu - GBC
MD.emu - MegaDrive
N64oid - N64 -touchpads on ICS
NES.emu - NES
Snes9x EX - SNES
All work with xplay controls on AOKP

Interesting, I quite like aokp too. Are there any features that don't work on ics roms on this device? Things like FM radio don't bother me, but for example data would be needed .

My experience on CM9 was that the OS was smoother than the stock Gingerbread but the emulator's performance was not as good. I could not have full speed with frameskip 0 on Snesoid or Gameboid and a clean sound at the same time. Plus the screen was all pixelized. Maybe AOKP performs better than CM9 ?
Now I'm on CM7, it is fast, there is plenty of free internal memory but I have those issues:
- bad battery life
- no proximity sensor
- some games don't work with the touchpads
I'm wondering if I should try TrueAncestor.
I think you should. There are always psxperia and mupen64plus for touchpads. At least they work with the majority of games that absolutely need touchpads
You can always install cupcake on your phone and get the "retro" games from the android market

n64oid bit laggy?

how is everyone finding n64oid on their nexus 7? in mario 64 the game is very smooth but every now and then it hands for a second or so and usually gets a little laggy before hanging.
Also tried fpse with metal gear solid and can get past the main menu. I had this problem before on my xperia play and just had to keep setting the bios but there is no menu button on the nexus 7 so can get to the correct menu. any ideas?
For me, n64oid is flawless. Try using a custom kernel like trinity. Overclocking the CPU and GPU makes a pretty big difference. Also try changing settings like disabling audio, disabling screen stretch and adjusting frame skip.

Aha! I did wonder why I couldnt find in Play Store but now I understand emulators are now banned from Play Store and also you can no longer download games directly through ROM gripper
Gonna d/l N64oid anyway and see if any lag with overclocked GlazedJB ROM. Hope not!
Thanks
Works great.
mario tennis is unplayable
I think if you're worried about 'lag', you should see how the game plays on a high specced pc - as far as I know, most N64 emulators have bugs with all sorts of games, and it depends on which file you're using to play the game, etc, so there is a solid chance it isn't down to the N7.
