USB Host on Galaxy 3? - Galaxy 3 Accessories

Hi, I want to know, if I can use SG3 as "hosting device" (connect a mouse/flashdisc/camera to my phone). I know I will need these cables - OTG-cable, USB Y cable and USB charger(wireless, with USB slot).
I would be glad if someone can help me.

AFAIK we just dont have the hardware to connect usb devices to our phone (even with cables).

[Q] Desire HD USB OTG Host cable

Hi,
I've been wanting to hook up my desire hd to usb hosting and have not been able to find a cable for it.
I was wondering would it be ok if i connected a micro usb (male) to usb b (printer version) (female) adapter
to a,
standard printer cable with usb female at the end?
This would result in one end being a micro usb male and the other end a female usb
I look forward to your answers
Thanks alot for reading
That probably wont work.
I in fact saw an article yesterday, but can't recall the link. (Will look now).
IIRC, you need to modify the USB cable somewhat to get the DHD's USB port to detect an OTG connection.
Edit:
Here we go: http://gigaom.com/mobile/how-to-add-a-usb-keyboard-to-an-android-phone/
I think if the software supports usb host mode, with a 'micro usb type a' to 'usb type b' cable you can connect to a usb device. That is if the DHD is equiped with 'micro usb type ab' receptacle.
oh wow, ok thanks ever so much!!,
however, i just need to confirm what three cables you need so i can go out and buy them, i need:
Car charging cable (which one is this?)
Micro-usb cable (is this with the microusb male on one end and a standard usb male on the other end?)
USB extender cable (is this with one usb male and usb female on the other end?)
thanks

I have no idea really, but if you are successful, let us know
I'm just having trouble understanding what cables are needed.
On the website you gave me, it says i need:
a car charging cable, a micro USB cable and a USB extender cable.
Is this effectively two micro usb cables and a USB extender cable?
or does one HAVE to come from a car charging kit?
please help!!
thanks
Found some more info @ http://www.tombom.co.uk/blog/?p=124

Nice find! I did see the mini one only
Gonna order and try it out. No great financial loss if it does not work.
Obviously we will need a USB Host module for the kernel if not already present. Will check tonite.
i've finally made my host cable!!!
i now need micro-usb dongle host module. Is this where you have to get hold of a car charger and get the end of it and unsolder bits?
The USB Host module is software. It is loaded by the Linux kernel.
ok well i need to get that too.
Also, whats the bit with the car charging cable? what that for?
I'd be really interested in this as well. Would be awesome if i could just connect a usb drive or my camera to my phone to copy data.
So does anyone know if a host driver is available for the desire hd.
I really have no idea how it would work, but it should, as loads of tablets are able to use 3G-Sticks to connect.
Today I recieve my USB Host adapter cable for the DHD.
When I plug it into the DHD and connect a USB Hub the car panle ("Auto Bedienfeld") starts.
Connecting a USB Keyboard to the USB Hub doesn't show any impact. But this is what I have expected. Next I try to integrate the patch from sonic74 to a kernel for the DHD.

At the moment I use Android Revolution HD 2.0.9
Any progress?
I really like the USB host future on my Desire HD,
I want to connect my USB Drive to my DHD if this is possible? So i have 16GB More storage if needed ;D
I've ordered the converter thing from dealextreme, someone that could make a flashable zip to enable usb host functions?
Was also quite interested on this.
My wish is to connect my dSLR to the phone, and move all jpgs/nefs from there to a internal card. Or copy, and use the device for better visualisation.
As the camera has its internal battery, power shouldn't be a issue. It would be awesome
I am still working on this.
At the moment it is working for a short time, but then there a same errores.
This meens it should be possible, but same more research must be done.
My Kernel is based on the BUZZ 1.3.7 Kernel, and following patches:

Quick Q: What did you connect? Or you didn't connect anything ?

[Q] USB Hosting

Hi All,
I have rooted my SGH-T989 and have flashed Zedomax's kernel to allow the USB Hosting functionality on my phone. This has worked great and I can now use a mouse and keyboard via a USB Splitter into a single OTG cable plugged into my phone.
The Setup:
Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 (Rooted)
Zedomax-T989-Kernel-v0.1.zip from
w w w .theandroidsoul.com/connect-usb-flash-drives-mouse-keyboard-etc-to-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-t-989/"
OTG cable

Normal USB mouse and keyboard
KVM Used to switch mouse and keyboard from Desktop to USB Hub for SGH-T989
The Problem:
If I use the mini to USB cable supplied with the Belkin USB Hub to the OTG cable the mouse and keyboard are recognized and usable. However, if I don't use the OTG cable it will NOT recognize the mouse and keyboard.
That is not my issue, I'm ok using the OTG cable, but it leaves me with a Female USB placeholder. Therefore, I have to connect it to the USB Hub. Obviously, the Mini to USB A cable worked for hosting, but it does not supply power to the phone even though the USB Hub is plugged in and powered.
My initial thoughts were that the USB Hub does not supply power out the side mini USB so I bought a 1.0 USB A to A , 2.0 USB A to A, 3.0 USB A to A, Gender Changer for OTG cable. and no matter what cable I plug into the front USB slots on my USB Splitter, I get NO POWER and NO HOSTING. Nothing seems to flow through to the phone other then the one Mini to USB with OTG, but leaves me powerless.
I have also bought the docking station, which I later found out that even with the OTG cable will not push the hosting through to the phone and had to return it in favor of a more generic stand to hold my phone landscape.
I am out of ideas as to what to try next to get power and hostability to my phone. Please help!
Thanks,
Sam
Odds the USB hub powered? I remember that the first OTG kernel that came out said the hub had to be powered to use a mouse or keyboard.
The hdmi cable has to be plugged to the phone charger as wellfor it to work
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Yes it is powered, I have also tried unplugging it to remove power. However, the OTG cable will accept the KVM mouse and keyboard plugged directly into the OTG cable itself.
The one thing I'm not certain on is whether or not the mini to USB out of the side of the USB Hub is supplying power or not. However, that is the ONLY spot that is working for pushing the KVM Mouse and Keyboard through to the phone. Without just plugging KVM directly into the OTG cable.
The KVM is plugged into the USB Hub and the Mini is plugged into the side by the power and then plugged into the OTG. This setup works for hosting, but all the variations of plugging into the normal front facing USB spots of the hub have failed to do anything but bring in power. However, I have NEVER successfully brought power through the OTG cable, so I'm not even sure it can support power at this point.
Sam
the only devices that does not need additional power are USB keys / flash disk storage and the likes
everything else you need to plug it into a powered USB hub, and have the hub connect to the USB OTG cable
and you do not need any special Kernel for USB OTG to work on this phone
USB OTG works from factory stock ROM (i just tried it to verify )
Hi Allgamer,
Thank you for your insight. However, I did try the OTG cable before getting the special kernel and it DID NOT function. Once I downloaded Kedomax's kernel I was successful. This appears to be a feature they removed from T-Mobiles version.
As for the Power issue. If you guys would be so kind as to reread my initial blog and reply before posting power things to try as I have listed that I have tried powered and unpowered and plugged directly and indirectly and through a usb hub and without, all variations and cables to plug and play have been exhausted.
I'm looking for a more advance analysis that may help provide a solution to my current problem. I'm not sure if the OTG cable can allow power to pass through to the phone or not. I have yet to see that work. I'm also thinking I cannot host without the OTG which seems as though it would leave me in an infinite loop.
Here are more along the line of questions that I'm hoping someone can provide insight to as I have no way of answering these questions myself without an extended work bench and wider test result devices.
1.
Can anyone confirm that the OTG cable can in fact provide power to the phone as well when plugged into a USB Source such as a HUB that is providing power out the USB ports to the OTG cable itself.
2.
Can anyone confirm that the OTG Cable can still support hosting capabilities if power is being sent up the cable or does this disable it in some way.
Thanks again for your responses, no disrespect intended by my redirection of the thought process here.

[q] usb2.0 a female to micro usb-b male

I am thinking of buying that cable
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB2-0-A-...aCables_JN&hash=item2c6351bea1#ht_1388wt_1185
just for connecting usb sticks-i dont expect a hard disk to be able to connect to wildfire- but i dont't know if it will work.
Do you guys believe that will work?
Probably won't work
I don't think the Wildfire's MicroUSB is USB host capable.
I have found that it must be enabled from the kernel. I dont know if theres such a kernel in wildfire.

USB device not found or cannot copy files to your computer- solution is the USB cable

For those who had problems with their Kies or Windows not recognizing their S3 or find that copying your files using the MTP device mode slow, change your USB cable. I had problems rooting my Rogers G3, copying files to my computer was impossible and when I connect my G3 to a Vista desktop computer, I get the error USB device not recognized (code 10). Then I remember I have no problems with my Win7 laptop. The only difference was the USB cable. I use the same cable on the Win7 laptop and Wahla! Everything worked beautifully!
You would think there is no difference in a regular USB cable but it does. Hope this helps those having those nightmares trying to connect their phones to Kies.
Well.... i could see maybe if your USB cable was damaged somehow that it was hindering functionality... or was just a crappy USB cable to begin with.... but USB is USB. Pin layouts haven't changed.... nor has the wiring layout for USB cables changed. Yes, we have three different classes of USB now... but as far as i'm aware, it's only the USB controllers that are different, not the cables that are used. If they changed the cables, then i don't think that there would be a possibility of pretty much universal backwards compatibility between all versions of USB. I've used my S3's micro-USB cable... my old Motorola Atrix 4G's micro-USB cable... hell, even the micro-USB cable used to charge my Logitech mouse... never had a problem with any of them. Soooo.... a damaged cable is the only thing i can think of that would have caused issues with it not recognizing the device.
I thought the same. This 'damaged' usb cable is from my Samsung Vibrant. It still works with my Vibrant. How do you explain that?
Anyway, just trying to help.
Didn't help me either unfortunately. My laptop works fine but have the problem on my desktop. Setup my parents Galaxy S III with its new cable and had the same problem. Luckily I found that I can use the USB 3.0 port as a workaround...

Can I send files from the Nexus 5x to a pc via a USB OTG cable?

Hello,
I want to buy a usb-c cable for my Nexus 5x. But I also need a USB-c otg cable. So I would like to know:
Do I need both? A usb cable without otg in order to connect it with a pc and also a usb otg cable to connect it with other devices or is a usb otg cable everything I need? Is it possible to send images from my Nexus 5x to my pc via a usb otg cable?
Either way you'll need two different cables to do both since the USB OTG will go to a USB A female connector and you'll need a male connector to plug into your computer. I'm not sure if it would properly give up host to your PC when you tried to connect to it anyway.
Also in the future you might get more help in the Q/A sections for these types of things.
