Gamepad Durability - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How is everyone's gamepad holding up and how long have you been using the phone?
I was playing Marvel vs. Capcom last night and forgot how hard I like to mash the controls! Maybe because the phone's smaller than an actual controller, I feel like it's so much more delicate.
Let me know if anyone's buttons have begun to stick, break, or just quit working and being responsive.

its a really solid gamepad for me, ive had mine for just under a year now and ive played heaps of games, emulators, ps1 games etc
there has been no sticking or breaking for me, just for a few games there have been issues because im on the ICS beta

You just mean compatibility issues on ICS, right?

Are we talking about the gamepad and the buttons or ICS here ?

It's pretty damn durable.
I've dealt with Windows Mobile, iOS, Windows Phones and other Droids... needless to say, having BUTTONS was such a damn relief that I went on a fighting game frenzy (I kid you not when I say I've played almost every fighter released in the past 20 years)... and the Xperia PLAY's been taking it like a champ.

I saw a article once where sony claimed that you could beat the hell out of the gamepad (to an extent) and it would still work.
As for mine, the only thing wrong with it is the scratches caused by sliding up and down
All buttons work fine for me, and i bash them a lot, only had since christmas though

Perfect, this is just what I wanted to hear. Looks like I can mash away then!
I'm so surprised at how good the controls feel, especially the D-pad. They have such a nice click to them and still feel good rolling forward and back (Hadouken!)

I agree. All the buttons click nicely when pressed. Sony Ericsson did a very good job !

Honestly, the only complaint I have at all is that my hands cramp from holding the small device and pushing buttons quickly. But what can I expect, it's not a controller, it's a phone.
My hands probably wouldn't cramp as much if I didn't make Megaman dash-jump every step he takes...

The gamepad itself is durable, but the flex cable inside the slider sure as hell isn't.

the Xperia Play gamepad it's tough i guess
mine works like a clockword :good:
but the slider of this device feels frail

My slider on my xperia play is weird. Sometimes if i slide my xperia play closed it shuts itself off.

I think its pretty durable slider seems pretty good give ls a reasuring clack when it slides open and close the only think I could complain about the gamepad is the L/R triggers after 6 months of my second play (first I dropped down the toilet) the R trigger seems alot weaker than the L because of heavy fifa and FPS gaming but love this phone would like a xp2 but thats a different topic ..

Gamepad still works great. Still got that clickiness to it but the slider is a bit loose still not a problem though as everything works.

[Q] Xperia Play touchscreen

Hey guys, i'm in the market for a new phone and I choose the xperia play, i will be purchasing it soon, but before then, i have a question about the touchscreen. How responsive is it compared to the ipod touch's touchscreen? The reason i say this is because i'm coming from an LG Voyager so besides my ipod touch, i dont have a lot of prior experiece with touchscreen devides and I want my experience to favorable and not something that's laggy and unresponsive and like the lg voyager's touchscreen can be. Thank you for the help you guys.
PS. For those of you saying that i should just go to the verizon store and try it for myself, i have indeed done this, but I didn't have enough time to form a good opinion about whether or not it was good.
The touch screen on the play is great, in fact I actually prefer it to my Itouch , honestly I wouldent worry about it feels great to me
Awesome! Thank you very much! Just the answer I was looking for, i was going to ask more questions, but there's nothing I can think of at the moment lol.
I have tried my friends' iPhones but I can't form a solid comparison with the Xperia Play in terms of touchscreen. Yeah, indeed, the iPhone's touchscreen is sensitive, but it could be a safe statement too that the Xperia Play has a very sensitive and responsive touchscreen. It's capacitive so it registers even the slightest touch possible and the UI response is very smooth, thanks to Gingerbread.
I haven't had any trouble with its touchscreen yet (being unresponsive or so) but c'mon dude, comparing it with the LG Voyager you say!?!? OMG what a MISMATCH! The Voyager is damn old and has a resistive touchscreen. That could be the reason why you're saying it's not that responsive. Resisitive touchscreens prefer to be pressed down for the action to be registered unlike capacitive ones that detect finger movement over the screen.
PS: There is big difference between resistive and capacitive touchscreens. You should read them HERE to avoid mismatch.
Just don't put the phone to a couch or pillow and try to use plays touchscreen. It's strange, it becomes unresponsive and weak, but it's OK on the table (you have to put more pressure on your fingers).
Onhand its great.

I understand the difference, i was just stating that i am coming from a voyager and resistive touchscreens suck.
not only is the screen nice and sensitive (and looks tasty too), it has 4 point multi touch (which i had no idea about until i ran a multi touch test) which is very accurate and makes apps like google maps so awesomely easy to use, it's amazing!!
i get a bit excited about the screen on the play as i came from the x10 with glitchy dual touch
It's probably the same as the iphone.. I don't notice a difference between them. But when I turned on my old htc touch... Omg lol never realized how hard I had to press the screen to get it to response before

Coming from 3 years of using the iPhone, the Play is a HUGE improvement.
Multitouch upto two fingers is ok
But the screen goes mumbo jumbo when more than 2 fingers are used :S
Some serious touch issues have also been noted when the phones charging

Thank you everyonee for the helpful responses, I can't wait to get my play!
I never found it unresponsive while charging or while setting it down anywhere. It's quite nice to use. Only downside I've found is it gets less accurate if you fingers get all sweaty.
I think Gingerbread really brings alot of smoothness and responsiveness to the overall touch screen experience on the play and I must say in comparison to other phones it's damn smooth. I've seen people with dual core phones be impressed with my Play considering the specs for it are now considered outdated.

[Q] Who Else Is Unimpressed With The Analogue Touchpads?

Like the title said, am i the only one who doesn't like the way developers are handling the touchpads controls there so... fiddly and annoying, is there anyway to make them better?
In my opinion dead space is the only game that's conquered the controls properly, also why couldn't Sony make the pads recessed and have psp style analogue sticks?
I completely agree, i don't think you can change them though that's like developer stuff in every game, Shadowgun was a disappointment for me but they are pretty good for PSXperia's games
I don't mind them, Takes time to get use to them but they are pretty decent as they are touch.
I think the centre bits could have been made so you can feel them better, so you know where you're touching.
Also, in some games, the bit in between can be used as up and down, but that's just as fiddly when you have to change to the touchpad to go left & right.

Completely agree with this, real analogue sticks would have made our phone the ultimate device for sure and it probably would have sold a hell of a lot better. If only they had...one can dream hah.
Us at www.xperiagamer.com got to speak with one of the designers of the xperia play. Because the xperia play is a phone + more then a games console there is a lot more bits to fit inside the handset, because sony ericsson wanted it to be phone like they had to look at the overall size of the play. We found out they did experiment with sticks but found it would make the handset at least half cm if not more thicker and as the phone is already a little big this would of made it a brick. Think yourselfs lucky that we have a complete controller, they could of missed out analog all together or maybe 1 like the psp then what games could we end up playing.
Plus the touchpads work perfect its the game devs that muck up. Try mupen64 with mario64 then tell me they aint good to play with.

Wow, XperiaGamer's a nice website, but i gotta disagree, opening the phone up there was quite a bit of room for flat PSP type controls expecially if the touch versions of them were gone, the sliding touchscreen could have been raised a bit too, with grooves for the analogue sticks, that could have prevented the marks you get from sliding the phone anyway

Thanks website still a working progress at mo but will be great when filled up.
With your disagreement, we also think they could of . But thought would tell you what Sony said to us. But anyway the play is a great start to mobile gaming and even as it does have its downsides it still has many more plus sides to it.

It would take R2/L2/Triggers to make it more ultimate in addition to the pads, IMO.

I'm definitely really happy with the phone, it just would have made the device that much better. Also about the thickness, I have an extended battery which adds some thickness to the phone, but it actually helps quite a lot when playing. I would have been fine with half a cm for real sticks haha. Honestly, the people who care about aesthetic and how the phone LOOKS probably wouldn't make this phone their first choice anyway, they should have just catered to the gaming crowd. OH WELL, maybe next time around if they make a sequel device.

I agree with what most of people have said in this topic, but the topic title doesn't quite lead correctly into the logic expressed here.
Like many others have said, it's not the actual "hardware" touch-pads I'm disappointed in, it's developers' way of using it.
... and by by "developers" I pretty much exclusively mean Gameloft.
EA uses them correctly, as does Lantansia, Halfbrick, HandyGames, SpaceTime, SilverTree, Madfinger, Glu Mobile, and so many others... the only real big issue with them is that Gameloft is the Xperia PLAY's biggest supporter and; coincidentally, the most inconsistent with their quality. Sometimes they make something that feels nice (NOVA 2, Avatar, Sacred Odyssey, Starfront) then other times it's like "What the hell?! SERIOUSLY? This **** is IMPOSSIBLE to control! DID THEY EVEN TEST THIS BULL****!?!"

I got the Smartwatch a couple of weeks ago to go with my sony xperia S.
Pros:
Excellent Screen
4 day battery with mid-heavy use
Powerful Vibrate alert
Excellent strap and easy to clip the device onto the strap. Even easier to connect the charging cable!
your phone updates the smartwatch firmware OTA which is excellent.
Screen is clear
Swiping and one touch is very accurate.
Looks much better and more premium than the 1st generation liveview
Lots of widgets add ons
Album Art on music player!!
No disconnects at all in the two weeks i have had the device (1st gen liveview was awful for this!)
Cons:
Multitouch is a bit of a faff, you press 2 fingers to go back a screen, i find this difficult as the screen is small and my fingers are big, takes a couple of goes for me to get this action right even now.
Has a bit of an impact on your phone battery, youll need to charge your phone every day.
Really enjoying the device, its my primary watch now. (have the Motoactv for excercise)
I just go it today. I think it looks cool but the piratical application will only be seen with time.
Have you found a way remove constant desktop indicator?

Mine works fine with my Epic 4g Touch. But can anyone tell me how to change the screen brightness and such? According to the Smartwatch App, its supposed to be built in but I can't find it.
Pro's slick and looks cool
Cons: many users ave had the issue of the watch freezing, rebooting, when clicking apps. I have had the issue of trying to control the music on my phone and the songs keep skipping to the next song like if I pressed the button only way to stop it is by opening taskmanager and killing the music app. The messaging app has made my cellphone keyboard not respond to letter presses. This is soooo buggy its ridiculous. Still debating on sending it back.

Yea. U can fund its original production until may 18. After that it goes into production and is expected to ship in September. Well retail for $150-200, but if you fund it now u can get it for 115-125 depending on color you want.

it's weird.. the kickstarter campaign is for a black and white version but they sell a OLED color one for less - whether or not it works for this phone is a different story - any brave souls out there want to try it out?
I kick-started it and i think it is a win-win.
On the one hand i could have a sweet watch with great connect-ability to my phone and functionality with all sorts of apps.
On the other hand even if i never really do to much with the apps I have a nice e-ink watch with changeable display styles and information.
Plus, due to the high funding, they are making it water resistant enough to go swimming.

I got Sony Smartwatch MN2 yesterday. Nice watch.
Pros:
- smart, thats why it's called smartwatch.
- bla bla bla...
Cons:
- not like Liveview MN800, u should pay for almost nice plugin/app for this watch.
- the email plugin/app (except Gmail) doesnt support non-Sony gadget. (even it's Sony Erricson)
- battery drain, with highly use, its only hold +-16 hours, then i need recharge this watch!
- the metal, black rubber and white plastic is bad design i guess. When u hold MN2 in your hand, it's looks like a kid/teenage toys.

[Q] Are the Xperia Play's L and R buttons sturdy

I own an Xperia Play and the L and R buttons don't feel as sturdy as my Playstation Vita or my PSP but t hat is understandable because it has a different design but I get very worried that I destroy the buttons when I press them a lot when playing 1st Person Shooters and it's driving me crazy when I play shooters. The buttons don't feel like they were L and R buttons don't feel like they were made for repetitive pressing which is what you do in 1st Person Shoots such as Modern Combat and N.O.V.A.

[q] xperia zl screen unresponsive during gameplay

Hi everyone. I had a Xperia z but sold it and got the smaller Xperia zl because of personal preference. However I have noticed a few potential flaws with this phone . First of all the back of the phone gets pretty hot whenever I play games Like Real Racing 3 etc, it has even shut itself off on one occasion.
My main issue with the phone is That the touchscreen is pretty unresponsive during gameplay. The screen is very responsive during normal usage, for example navigating the home screen or browsing the web, The phone is able to register even the slightest of touches. But during gameplay I have to tap on the screen with extra force to steer in Real Racing 3 or whenever I am playing games via the Drastic DS emulator, the on screen directional pads dont register my taps upless i tap pretty hard or press the buttons with a slight swiping motion. i am worried because I got this phone for gaming and really don't want to get rid of it. Could it be the screen protector thats installed? or that the touch screen isn't calibrated?
also sometimes when i try to navigate between home pages by swiping, the screen bounces back instead of going to its intended target. i have the model c6506. and its on android 4.2.2 and also i never had any such issues with the xperia z
maybe its the screen protector. other possibility is that its the games' problem, not the phone. as u say, its good when on home screen etc.
iam inclined towards second possibility though, its the game which is problematic.
hit thanks if i helped u!

Ok i downloaded super stick golf 2 and tried it and guess what, the touch screen is very responsive, that game uses mostly taps, and this registers the slightest taps. I am gonna test some more games and see if your theory is right.
ok tested some more games
Tested simpsons tapout and had the same issue with taps not being registered properly
Tested Dead Trigger and the game runs flawlessly, the slightest taps were registered
Tested Beach Buggy Blitz and the screen is slightly unresponsive also, kinda difficult to steer, i have to apply extra pressure to the touch screen.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat works flawlessly, i was pulling off combos and brutalities with ease
Jetpack Joyride was a bit unresponsive also
So I guess the problem varies from app to app. I really dont want to remove the screen protector but i have to to ensure that I dont have a faulty device. I have an extra screen protector so as soon as I can verify that its the screen protector, i will simply re-install it. now how do i go about removing it because i am trying but it seems glued on!
gonna sell this

OK its definitely not the phones touch screen, i just did some tests and the touchscreen is absolutely responsive in every aspect of the operating system except when playing some games. So the digitizer is great. so it must be the darn screen protector!, and i dont want to remove it because it is glued on and i dont want to risk damaging the screen underneath. my favourite games are the ones giving problems with responsiveness. Even the ppsspp emulator from the playstore i gotta swipe the directional pads etc for the game to respond.
I dont think screen protector was the culprit, the app itself is not optimize for sony device or sony OS is not that stable.
Sent from my Z10 using Tapatalk 4
as per my understanding, ur screen is flawless, its the apps, maybe they are not optimised.
more tests done
ok I can confirm its definitely the apps, some of them are are optimized properly for the xperia zl. I have tested need for speed most wanted (2012) and it works flawlessly, controls are spot on and screen very responsive. Also raven sword 2 and pvz works great. its a minor issue at best really but i cant play my psp or nds games on my zl properly unless i use a controller. which is fine cause i do have a huge 5 inch 1080p display. and I really love this phone so i will overlook this issue. for now
